Is there any kind of "withdrawl" when you stop taking the creatine supplements? I mean, do you have to keep taking the stuff in order to maintain the muscle you build while you're on it?
Body for Life Forum Message by nlp1669 (52 posts) at 11:08 AM
I like the site of Bluefly.com. But this time of year the selections are skimpy, they usually bulk up in March/April.
I really like patterned suits - I feel anything to distract from the fat I have (for right now).
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (332 posts) at 06:14 PM
Carole, since you asked about color ... I love the color of the "before" picture suit "twinmom" wears in her profile pics. It's a bright blue. I actually would never have thought I'd like that color, but I tried it on a few summers ago and if the suit had fit, I'd have gotten it. When my hair's it's natural dark-blonde color, you and I have somewhat similar coloring (atleast, by the pics), so maybe try that color for a change?

I know my yellow one for my pics is not flattering for me, but it was cheap. there is a place in the mall that is just swimsuits and bikinis. I may go look for one for my trip to Hawaii at the end of my challenge.
I would try to find a place like that where you live and try on different colors and styles before ordering one online. Some places will not let you return them if you do not like them.

Try newportnews.com-they usually have pretty cute, reasonably priced suits. I like a bright coral color-it's good on pretty much every skin color and somehow manages to make you look tan even if you aren't.

Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (445 posts) at 11:00 PM
I don't take Betagen, but I am a faithful reader of the www.skwigg.com site. She is a BFLer who's been doing this for years. Here are all her recommendations, thoughts, suggestions for Betagen www.skwigg.com/id53.html
Body for Life Forum Message by Webmaster (65 posts) at 09:15 AM
what kind of carbs are you eating jawi? give us some examples of typical meals?
Also, what are some of your workouts like?
OK I looked at your profile again and one thing to point out is this -- compared to many people starting BFL (like me), you are already relatively close (10-15 lbs) of your goal weight. People who start out with a lot to lose, typically have dramatic results quickly. But even those people usually have trouble once you get down to those last 10-15 lbs -- your body will fight you the hardest to give up the last of the weight.
At the bf% you're at, you still should be able to see some results over at least a 2-3 week period. It sounds like your diet is pretty good assuming your portions aren't too big, so my guess is perhaps your workouts aren't intense enough?
When you get down to that last bit of weight, you really have to push it if you want to get down there. That's why usually only athletes get down in those lower bodyfat %s. :)
Keep track of your calories for a few days just to be sure you're not overeating unintentionally. You could also be undereating and your body is going into starvation mode trying to hold onto the weight it has.
Also, are you consuming enough water on a daily basis (at least a gallon/day?)

Hi guys! I'm new here. I just finished week 2 yesterday. The thing is, when I finish my workouts (I do them in the mornings) I am so tired. I just want to go back to bed afterward. Is this normal at first? When will eating right and exercising make me feel good instead? I felt much better last week than I do this week. Started taking Pro-Form last Friday. It has 5g of Creatine per serving. Anywho, any ideas? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!!

Julie, How much sleep are you getting at night? Maybe your body is craving more hours to rest & rebuild?
Body for Life Forum Message by beegee714 (54 posts) at 03:08 PM
I felt like that through the first couple weeks of working out. I am now taking betagen, which is helping. But also, making sure that I am drinking all my water is also helpful.
Body for Life Forum Message by getnlean (157 posts) at 07:08 PM
Funny, I am the same way and it has never gone away. I could run 5 miles and then come back and fall asleep instantly (actually, I have done that before)LOL! As for the ProForm, I haven't heard of that, but I would take anymore then one servind since it has 5 grams of creatine in it. Anymore then 5 grams and you will bloat.![]()
Body for Life Forum Message by getnlean (157 posts) at 07:11 PM
Jeez, what have I been drinking, LOL
That was suppose to read, but I wouldn't take anymore then one serving, blah...blah...blah.
Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (445 posts) at 10:52 PM
I read somewhere in BFL that you may be more tired the first couple weeks of BFL than you were before you started because your body is adjusting to the shock of the new eating style and the new intense workouts. That's what happened to me at first-I had to take a nap every day, but now I hardly ever do unless I don't get enough sleep the night before.

My 4 yr old goes to preschool from 9 to 12 every day. The old routine would be to head straight to a fast food place for lunch. That hasn't happened since the last week in Dec.
Today, Nicholas tells me that McDonald's called him last night to see where he has been. "Mom, I think McDonald's really needs to see me today so he won't be sad & lonely." BaaaHaHAHAHA! Where does this kid come up with his material!! (a regular comedian - ALL of the time!)
So mom did make a visit to mcdonalds - cheesburger happy meal with milk & apple dippers & nothing for me. Nicholas then proceeds to tell me that I'm making McDonald's really sad today. I replied, " Nick, Mommy is working on making McDonald's heartbroken, okay?!!"
He gave me the angry face...ha! Gotta love my little angel.

Thanks everyone for all of your input!
Susan
Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (55 posts) at 02:00 PM
Hey Susan...
My explanation below:
1. Calcium - several reasons - necessary for bone health and muscle metabolism are the main ones.
2. Multivitamin - I am a vegetarian, and want to make sure I am getting all of the nutrients I need - especially some of those in the B range, which aren't available in strictly vegetarian diets (no beef, fish, pork, lamb, goat, or chicken - nothing that has a voice)
3. CLA - I am a vegetarian, and in addition to eating eggs with enhanced EFA's, this helps to ensure that I get enough EFA's. It is also thought to be an antioxidant, and though I eat very little foods containing partially hydrogenated oils, it is still possible that those trans fats could be roaming my body, stealing random ions, and thereby increasing my overall risk of cancer. And I don't eat fish, can't stomach fish oils, so there ya go...
4. HMB - hydroxymethylbutyrate has been shown in several studies to reduce muscle breakdown after strenuous exercise. It has also been shown in some studies to assist with body composition conversion (- body fat, and + lean muscle). I've read a lot of independent info on this one besides the info on EAS's site.
5. Myoplex shakes/EAS bars - unfortunately, as a veggie-saurus, I don't always get adequate protein. These help me balance out everything I eat to make sure I'm keeping the proportions of carbs/protein relatively even. I chose the Myoplex Lite ones instead of Carb Sense because I am doing extra cardio/training for a triathlon, and need carbs.
6. L-Glutamine - I have read that this can aid in recovery after a workout in many ways (mostly assisting with protein metabolism and as a muscular anti-catabolic).
7. Lean and ThermoDynamX - both contain ingredients that have been shown independently to assist with fat loss over limited periods of time (no more than a year in most cases).
Part of the reason I am concerned about recovery is that I am training for triathlons later this year, as well as a few 100 mi cycling events. I am putting my body through a lot of cardio, and want to make sure I'm not catabolizing my muscles to provide the energy I need to do this while I am limiting my caloric intake. In short, I want to burn fat, not muscle while on those long training rides...
Hope this helps...
Body for Life Forum Message by Grace2bfit (41 posts) at 02:17 PM
Ok...I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to alot of this stuff...
I'm only using Myoplex Lite (1xDay) and Advantage Edge Carb Control bar (1x/day).
Should I do more?
Are all of these things really necessary?
If I use these other things, will it help or hinder my progress.
My goal is to loose fat and tone. Yes, I want muscle definition, but I'm not looking to become a fitness model or a major athlete. Should I still take other things.
Also...while I'm 'transforming' I'm trying to get pregnant...should I stay away from the supplements?
Sorry to sound like such an idiot, but all of the sudden when reading this I thought that I might be sabbatoging my efforts by not taking anthing.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Flax seed oil (capsules) 1 time per day
Myoplex Original (vanilla) 1-2 times per day

Salads are really very good providing you don't "OD" on the dressing and keep it fat free, or use croutons. Croutons are bad mmmmkay.
These are some of your best carb sources and help to fill you. Low in calories too. Salad you CAN splurge on :)
Body for Life Forum Message by nlp1669 (52 posts) at 11:05 AM
I really have come to like the taste of 1 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil & 1 tbsp of vinegar as a salad dressing.
I also add raisins, almonds, chicken (or some type of protein), & occasionally mandarin oranges. Yum!
Body for Life Forum Message by mbb (63 posts) at 06:44 PM
you can eat all the lettuce you want. Its an extremely low calorie, high water content vegetable. Anything else you put on it is probably bad though. IMHO a salad is a vegetable side item, not a main course. You need to eat high quality complex carbs and protein, not salads.

I know some people who don't like cottage cheese and they say they can manage it if they blend it smooth (gets rid of the chunks, lol) and then mix it with fruit or some other carb. Might work for you!

JohnA, I can see your point. No, I don't NEED the extra muscle, but ya know I spent a sizable portion of my life carrying around an AWFUL lot of extra weight. I earned every bit of that muscle with years of pain and humiliation, and I'm not giving it up without a fight. Everything in the BFL literature suggests that one can simultaneously decrease the fat while increasing muscle. If it can be done, I intend to do it.

Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (445 posts) at 06:20 PM
I do a version of the foil packet thing with chicken. I season the chicken with salt, pepper, and parmesan cheese (reduced fat) and saute in nonstick cooking spray until it's well browned. Then I put it in the packet with potatoes, celery, and onions and bake at 350 for about 30 minutes. The chicken is really moist and the vegetables are really well flavored because I put the chicken on top of them in the packet. It's quick and easy and each person gets their own little packet.

I've done the one's getnlean suggested a couple of times - they aren't bad but I've added some sunflower seeds to add a little crunch otherwise they are kinda mushy - either way they are filling enough to get to the next meal.

I've tried those as well and really like them. One thing that helped to keep them from getting mushy is to store them in the freezer.

I solved the macro problem by making only one or two at a time heres
the
recipe for 2
1. Dry ingredients:
- 40 grams Fiber One Cereal
- 25 grams Total Protein Cereal (sub in 25 more fiber one, or oats here
if
you dont have it, but protein will change)
- 30 grams Oats
- 2 scoops ON %100 Whey chocolate flavor, 60 grams
2. Wet:
- 1tbsp + 1tsp PB
- 1tbsp water
- 2 tbsp Davinci SF Pancake syrup
- Davinci SF Banana or butterscotch, whatever flavor you like, i bet
caramel
would be good too, or cookie dough.
dump all the dry ingredients in first in processor, pour on the pb on
top,
mix in processor, it will still be too dry,
add in 1 tbsp water and some flavored davinci, mix again, getting
better
then add in the pancake syrup, 1 tbsp at a time till it comes out like
a
really thick cookie batter.
Dump it out onto a plate and form two equal bars, these are great, they
weigh in around 4 oz each and look just like tri-o-plex bars, taste
just as
good if not better.

No-Bake Protein Nutrition Bar Recipe
From Estella Juarez,Your Guide to Bodybuilding.
If you don't like the additives or price of store-bought protein bars
or
meal replacement bars, you'll appreciate this recipe. I've modified a
recipe
a friend passed on to me based on some kitchen testing. These are quick
to
make and make for a nice little snack, too. Best of all, they contain
healthy dietary fat, are no-sugar added and do not contain glycerine or
other unnatural ingredients. Be sure to keep them refrigerated and
don't eat
the whole batch at once!
Prep Time : 5min
Cook Time : 0min
Type of Prep : No Cook, No-Bake
Cuisine : U.S. Regional
Occasion : Back to School
INGREDIENTS:
5 tbsp natural peanut butter (chunky or smooth)
1/2 cup dry oat meal or whole grain hot cereal (uncooked)
1/2 cup oat flour (double the dry oats if you do not have oat flour)
6 scoops chocolate whey protein (approximately 132 grams worth of
low-carb
protein powder)
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons flax seeds (optional)
1 cup non-fat dry milk
1/2 cup water (depending on what type of protein you use, you may need
to
add more)
Modifications: Use vanilla protein and replace ~1/4 cup of the oatflour
with
a variety of nuts, seeds, or dried berries.
PREPARATION:
Spray an 8x8 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Combine dry
ingredients in a medium size bowl and mix well. Add peanut butter and
mix -
the mixture will be crumbly and dry. Add water & vanilla. Using a
wooden
spoon or rubber spatula, everything until a dough forms. The dough will
be
sticky. Spread dough into pan using a clean wooden spoon or spatula
that has
been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Refrigerate a few hours (or
freeze for an hour) and cut into 9 squares. Wrap bars individually (use
sandwich bags or plastic wrap) or store in covered container between
sheets
of wax paper. Keep refrigerated.

evenly ( It's quite sticky). Refrigerate a couple of hours, then cut
into 8
equal pcs and wrap each in cellophane

Whoa momma! Does anyone have a recipe that doesn't have so much fat? I'm only supposed to have 20g of fat per day and one of these would kill almost half of my daily allowance. I'd rather chug down my nasty protein shake than figure out how to spread my remaining 13g of fat over 4 more meals. Any suggestions?
Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (68 posts) at 02:50 PM
fitb42long,
I have to ask...if you are only consuming 20g of fat per day, then you are taking in less than 1000 calories per day? Keeping with the 40/40/20, of course. If I do the numbers right, 20g would be 180 calories from fat. And when you do the percentages, 20% of 900 calories is 180 calories. Or are you doing a different percentage than the BFL 40/40/20? Just curious, that's all. I don't think I could live on 900 calories a day...LOL. Actually my BMR is around 1200. So just to keep my body working properly, I need more than 900 calories.
Melanie = )
Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (445 posts) at 06:27 PM
I'm actually doing the ratios recommended on this site by the calculator thing. It's around 1300 calories a day, 136g protein, 136g carbs, 20g fat.
Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (445 posts) at 06:34 PM
I just looked at some of the days I entered on fitday.com a while ago and I think if I followed it to the T, the percentages would actually be more like 42/42/15. Does that sound right?
Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (68 posts) at 08:20 PM
Yes, I think 15% is about right for what you are eating. 15% of 1300 is 195 calories from fat. 9 calories per gram of fat = 21.66 grams of fat. I was confused because if you were doing the 20% thing, it meant you would only be eating around 900 calories. I was thinking how on earth you could be working out like you do with so little food...teehee!
But then again, I know you are fairly tiny so that may make a difference as well. I'm 5'2" (well, okay...5'1 1/2") and weigh 155 at this time. According to BMR calculations, I have to take in around 1196 calories per day minimum (that's with NO activity) just to keep myself going. Add into that the type of workout regimen BFL entails and I actually am supposed to eat around 1600 calories, give or take 100, for weight loss. I aim for around 250-300 calories per meal, which puts me in between 1500 and 1800 calories per day.
Melanie (who has a hard enough time limiting her fat intake to 35g, let alone 20!!! LOL) = )
Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (445 posts) at 09:59 PM
Yeah, the percentages that they recommended are for about 1.8 lb loss per week. The max that I can lose safely according to the BFL calculator is 2 lbs. per week. So far, I've been losing about 1 scale pound per week.

I have tried the Myoplex chocolate protein pudding out of the EFL book twice now and I think the common denominator of feeling nauseous the next day is that darn pudding! Am I doing something wrong - anyone know a trick to making it? While eating it, the texture gets to me, but it is the next morning that I feel ill.
Would like to figure out how to make it taste ok, as I have a sweet tooth and also it is an easy bedtime snack for my last meal.
Anyone else experienced this???

I have never gotten ill - I mix it in the blender and I only have protein powder so that's what I use.
Body for Life Forum Message by silvertalons33 (50 posts) at 01:25 PM
I've never had the one from the EFL book but I use GNC meal replacement powder and just add a very little amount of water beat it with a fork until it's good and thick and eat it like that. I have one every night for my last snack never had any negative side effects.

I've never gotten sick from it, but I have noticed that both nights that I had it as my last meal, I woke up with severe dry mouth the next morning, even though I'd had a gallon of water the day before. I haven't paid much attention to the sodium content of either my protein powder (Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey) or the pudding itself, but that does seem odd.
Body for Life Forum Message by Monica (12 posts) at 04:19 PM
well, I've never gotten sick but I do think it tastes nasty! So do the brownies from EFL! lol I just eat a BFL bar for my last meal, its not really huge on protein but its the last meal a its lighter. (the peanut caramel one tastes like a snickers crunch-no joke)

Thanks.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (606 posts) at 06:48 PM
The best way to get rid of water, is to drink water.
Just like then you dont eat, you store fat - when you dont drink enough water, you store water.
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (332 posts) at 06:59 PM
It's true, water helps you shed retention. I find it takes me about 20 minutes to develop a good, uncomfortable bloat and about 8-10 hours of drinking lots of water and avoiding salty, fatty carbs to get rid of the mess.
A light diuretic you can try is to mix a little lemon juice in with some of your water (not all of it!). Add artificial sweetener to taste.
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (332 posts) at 07:03 PM
OK,
I thought I could fly through this the way I do most everything else, with all the knowledge *taps noggin* up here and not a single real plan.
Alas, I think a good ole dose of regimented planning is in order. I feel bad for asking this question, but can you please tell me how you plan your meals? I know how it can be done -- I guess I'm just being a big baby (again) and know some of you helpful, patient folks will pat my chubby cheeks, wipe my tears and say, "It's OK. I'll help you wipe your butt."
:-P
Thank you!

Hi karenna :)
I used to use my dayplanner for work (i tote it everywhere) Now I use fitday - usually I plan my next days eating the night before - plug it all in, see what might need tweaking and if everything looks ok.
Even if each night, you wrote it on a piece of paper and stuck it to the fridge.
And don't worry, you arent the only one that doesn't plan - planning is a good thing, it helps you be prepared!
Body for Life Forum Message by spartankf (28 posts) at 08:04 PM
Karenna-
I use the Success Journal religiously. At first, it seemed sort of corny, but now I actually look forward to my 15 minutes of quiet time each night. I have a pretty hectic work/travel schedule, so it is critical for me to use the journal to plan my meals, because what I can eat/when depends on if I am on a plane or not!
I don't use fitday or anything - probably should to be more certain, but I just use the first/hand portion trick and go from there.
It helps me and like I said - I look forward to spending that time each night on just ME.
Hope this helps!

Karenna --
I am the WORST when it comes to organization of any kind. But with this, I'm ok. I generally choose a few recipes, either from EFL or my own recipes that I've modified, and cook them all up on Sundays. Put them in individual serving containers and freeze them. I'm set for the week, just grab one for lunch on my way out the door, along with whatever I'm having for midmeals (yogurt, string cheese, fruit, protein powder, etc), and I'm good to go. I get home around 7:30 each night and often don't feel like cooking up a whole meal for just me, so I grab another meal out of the freezer and pop it in the microwave. Works SO well for me.
Now, obviously if you have other people to cook for, you may have to make some adjustments, but I find that if I don't have my meals done for the week, I'm much more likely to eat things I shouldn't, mostly out of laziness.
Hope that helps!
Jess

I use the journal and I keep it VERY simple. I figure I get enough vitamins from my shakes (2 a day) I usually have egg beaters and toast or wh wheat tortilla in the morning, salad and chicken and fruit at lunch time, potaotes or pasta or br. rice with chicken or pork or steak and vegies for dinner and cottage cheese and fruit at night.
hope this helps. keep it simple!

cottage cheese/pineapple
tuna fish on whole wheat
oatmeal
roasted chicken breast
bananas
oranges
granny smith apples
carrots
various frozen vegetables
myoplex meal replacements
metrx protein bars

Tai, I have caught them as they reached critical mass, but haven’t had them explode… yet. But it is nice to know that others suffer the battle scars of hard boiled eggs.
rawillow, I normally sprinkle a little hot sauce on them. But normally, by the time I finish my workout and go to eat, I could chew on a table leg. So eggs aren’t all that bad.

I hate it when the eggs crack during the boiling and spring out this ugly looking white thingy. I read someplace that a table spoonful of salt prevents the cracks.

I don't feel like I can hit my 10's due to back, shoulder, etc. I feel like I am falling apart. Do the pains in your joints go away? My left shoulder hurts during upper body. My back is on and off. My feet hurt running and I don't feel like I can push myself as hard as I would like to or can. ANy suggestions, I am thinking the betagin will help with that, but my muscles aren't hurting it is my joints. Is this just temporary? First few week thing?
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (606 posts) at 05:38 PM
charladee - do you have anyone to check your form in case you are doing something incorrectly? Not saying you are, JUST in case.
Also with your cardio, have you tried something low impact that kicks ass like a cross trainer/elliptical machine?
Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (445 posts) at 05:53 PM
I had a lot of pain in my shoulders for the first couple weeks. I think it could be related to the stress the lifting puts on your joints. Maybe it's just cause they're not used to the strain and your knees and feet aren't used to the high impact stuff. I also had a lot of knee pain in the beginning. Luckily it all went away after I adjusted. Give it a couple more weeks and if it isn't gone, you should probably see a doctor.

THank you tai-kee and fitb42long....I am going to check with the trainer at the ymca next week and see if I am doing them right. I don't always like looking in the mirror, it embarrasses me. It is a small small ymca, not much room. I actually hate working out there, thinking of buying stuff for my home. Some of the men treat me like I am in their way and it makes me uncompfortable. I can do the elliptical, I just feel like I am getting a better workout with the treadmill. Hopefully it is just adjusting to all this new stuff. THANKS guys! Charla

Jim -- what you are doing is very similar to my husband's and my favorite (and detested) hamstring exercise. We call it the "log up the a$$" exercise, because that's what it feels like the next day.
Put your left leg up onto the bench behind you, your right leg far enough ahead that when you squat down your knee does not extend beyond your toes. 12 per side (10,8,6, etc) then change to the other side. I have to do these with much lower weights than I use for regular lunges, as it really isolates the muscles.
Body for Life Forum Message by Kay (54 posts) at 01:25 AM
Tai -- I tried your tip from another post about keeping the weights on my hips (tried this for squats) since they were getting too heavy for my hands. I almost did a face plant!
I'm trying to order the leg curl attachment for our bench from bodytrends, but don't know if I can get it delivered to us (APO address). Right now it's what my arms can take that's setting the limits on my squats, not what my quads can take.

I imagine that consuming alcohol wouldn't be great for the BFL plan, but I have friends that occasionally like to go out on Saturdays a few times a month. What I am asking basically is, how would this fit into the BFL plan, if I were to have a few drinks. And also has anyone ever run into this where they wanted to go out and have a few and what to do? I do like to have a few vodka tonics(and always ask for diet tonic water), and I wanted to know first of all how does the alcohol effect me if only drinking once a week or two. An if there are any suggestions to what I could drink that might be healthier? I know I asked several questions, but I would really appreciate it if someone could answer them for me. Thanks ahead of time.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (606 posts) at 03:30 PM
I like to have a few drinks on my free day and it hasnt done any damage.
However, just be aware that while your body is metabolising the alcohol, it doesnt do much of anything else (burn fat etc) until the poison is out of your system.

Then, at about 5:30pm my wife asked me to go on a beer run, so I thought, why not ride the bike to the store? I put on a backpack, and a half hour later I was home with a cold pack. (It was light beer, and yes I did have one! :O)
Body for Life Forum Message by vikingg97 (3 posts) at 10:39 PM
So basically the consensus is to only have a few and have it on your free day. And basically have what you want. Vodka has no calories, and when drank with a diet tonic water and lime, still no calories. I guess I will keep to that, but substitute my Sunday for a Friday or a Saturday. I think also if you work out or sit in Sauna the next day after drinking helps, and I have heard the night of drinking having a protein shake and have a B complex vitamin, avoids a hangover anyone heard the same?

I think it's ok to do the extra cardio as long as it's not HIIT cardio. If you start noticing that you're decreasing your lean mass, I'd lay off of the extra cardio, so you should just make sure that you keep up with the lean mass vs. fat numbers.

Oooo, hot stuff jstone! He he he! Well, I'm not in week 4, but I do find myself flexing my bicep muscle for my husband at least twice a week. It usually goes something like this "Look at this! No, look at it!" and he'll say "I know, you've shown it to me before." And I'll say "But there's an actual bump there-and I'm even starting to get the line at the bottom! And look!! You can even see the bump on the outside of my arm!" He thinks I'm a spaz.

I may have to commit a little sacrilege by paraphrasing Burn the fat & feed the muscle because he covers this topic.
You can gain a little muscle while losing a lot of weight... this is what happens for most doing BFL to lose weight... you've got a calorie deficit -- ie, burning more calories than you take in, so your body HAS to burn fat for fuel but the body won't burn fat for fuel in order to bulk up muscles like you're on steroids ;) Dramatically reduced calories compared to energy needs if it goes to far will result in muscle loss, not gain, because the body will sense that you've got a huge deficit of calories... that's not an 'anabolic' state for muscle :)
When you're gaining good amounts of muscle it's because you're not only doing the proper exercise techniques to increase size or strength but eating a calorie SURRPLUS to make sure the body has plenty of nutrition to build those muscles up. That's why most body builders gain a little body fat along that they have to lose before competitions. You can lose a little fat while building up muscle, but you're not going to lose a lot... yes, adding extra muscle will make you burn more fat/increase metabolism... but it's only a small extra % of your calories... so on a long term basis you burn more calories but you're probably not going to notice an extra pound of weight loss per week or anything solely because you put on some extra muscle... maybe over a few months... if you put on enough extra muscle to burn 100 extra calories per day it still takes you 35 days for that muscle alone to burn one pound :) so yes it helps but it's not like once you gain weight you're going to lose 5 extra lbs a week from it alone or anything ;) But over a year it can be the difference in losing 5 lbs, staying the same weight, or going up 5 lbs, you know what i mean?
I guess it boils down what state your body in -- if it's in a calorie deficit it will burn fat for fuel to meet your basic needs, but it won't burn fuel to bulk you up big time.... if you're in a calorie surplus (with appropriate food & exercise) it will use the extra calories to add muscle, and any extra will go to fat that it doesn't need... so you really have to choose what your primary goal is -- Muscle or Fat loss -- if you call BFL and tell them you're eating according to the plan but want to gain muscle and aren't they'll tell you to up your portion sizes because you're not eating enough (because you have to be eating more than you're burning to really gain muscle)
Also, muscle does not grow regardless of what you feed your body. There are essential amino acids that the body needs to build muscle that you can only get from diet (your body doesn't make them) -- without a steady supply of them in your body (one of the reasons you're eating protein evenly spaced out 6x a day ;) ) you're not going to gain much muscle. That's why you don't see bodybuilders eating 5000+ calories of junk food a day instead of protein -- junk food doesn't build muscle. If you're vegetarian this is also an important point I don't think got covered much in the original BFL book and that's that most vegetarian diets (especially vegan) are lacking in complete amino acids which will prevent you from gaining the muscle you want.
Interestingly this is also part of the reason women CAN'T bulk up too much on BFL because if they follow the program for weight loss they are only consuming enough protein really to maintain/firm up their existing muscle mass, not enough to add a lot of new muscle.

Uh-oh webmaster. BFFM in BFL support forum? You are in trouble now.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (86 posts) at 07:49 AM
Webmaster -- thanks for the info. That makes some sense, although it still doesn't explain what IS happening when I can feel muscles where I never noticed any before. If we are at a caloric deficit to burn fat, AND we are eating protein 6X a day and lifting weights -- are we still not building muscle? I, for one, am not trying to bulk up like pro bodybuilders, but I am trying to build muscle enough to be toned and defined. It seems like what we're doing is working for that, no?

I’m glad that the mini challenge was helpful, at least for some. The initial idea came up when there was a slew in “I fell off the wagon” posts. If you noticed, during the 2 weeks period there were only 2 posts that were somewhat of “I fell off the wagon”. Could be coincidental - could be the works of the mini challenge.
I hope the first mini challenge helped some of the guys to break the cheating habit, so they don’t need another mini challenge. If there is going to be another slew of “I fell off the wagon” posts, then I’ll offer another mini challenge.
Btw, I’m not forgetting my friends that the mini challenge didn’t help them breaking the habit… Just need to come up with something else…
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (343 posts) at 08:46 AM
I think the mini challenge helped me to stay on track. If I had cheated not only would I have felt guilty, but I would have had to write it here for all to see and that would have made me feel worse I think.
I did have a rough day where I didn't make the gym and everything was just going wrong for me, so that day I made an impromptu cheat day and stayed clean for the remainder of the week.
I think it was a good idea John. It did keep people honest and less tempted to cheat. Thank you. Lisa

Great idea John, Thanks for helping everyone. I was out of town the last few days so I didn't post. Though this seemed to help a lot of people, I didn't find that it kept me from cheating. So sorry to report that. It's no fault of your program. It is me. If I ran 10 or 12 miles and thus burned about 1400 calories I pretty much justified that I could and needed to eat more than just a hand/fist portion size of protein and carb.
Body for Life Forum Message by rmkkjb (46 posts) at 09:56 AM
I thought it was great - It just made me think when "bad" things were tempting me - gosh I don't want to have to say I cheated today. I don't know so much that we need to keep a record but if we started a thread each day that people could just post clean/cheat/refed we all will have second thoughts about cheating. It would also help up encourage those that have bad days.

1. I would try the meal planner; right now I use a whiteboard in the kitchen! I find Fitday a little too cumbersome.
3. I'll use the planner for both planning and tracking, and would like to be able to track protein/carbs/fat.
4. I don't think I'd get much use out of the meal building feature -- I tend to keep my meals very simple. Not one for change, I guess. Supper is the only meal of the day that's ever a surprise.
5. I'd like to see how the grocery list will work. In theory, I like the idea. I've never come across one that works well, though.
Great ideas, Webmaster. Thanks for taking the time to try and make this work for us.

I changed my cardio today too. I used the eliptical (this one said cross trainer) and O M G is all I can say to that. I found it to be a much more intense cardio then the treadmill and it was NOT easy to do. Those 20 minutes felt like an eternity. The beauty of it was, no shin pain ;P I actually had to stand by the machine when I was done for a few seconds to catch my breath and regain my balance LOL (I had total spaghetti legs) :)

I also have to mention that I saw a thing about Oprah roping in a few of her employees on the show to do a weight loss boot camp and I assume they're doing the Bob Green program that Oprah did and she did specifically say NO pasta, potatoes, rice, or bread. She didn't say you could have wheat, she said none period. I think that is just way too restrictive for the average person to abide by for the rest of their life.

Go up top and click Profiles. Then click Latest Photos. You can also click on each poster's profile to see if they have pictures. Do you see the little icons below each post? There is a circle, one that looks like an address card, one that looks like an envelope, and one that has a magnifying glass. Click on the second one that looks like an address card and then when that poster's profile pops up, look to the left and if it says "This person has photos. Click here to view" or something like that, then they have pictures posted.
Hopefully, I didn't make this more confusing for you? LOL.

Keep at it! Everyone is susceptible to a bad day, but the important thing is to jump back onto the horse. I would bet that a bad day now has ZERO comparison to a normal day before you started BFL.
When I started with Weight Watchers and then continued on the Zone, I went through a complete change in habits. I used to abhor vegetable and now I actually like them. :-)
Made it through the holidays and lost weight. BFL will enable me to be in the best shape of my life at 36. Of course I am incredibly blessed to go on this journey with Debbie.
Keep you chin up and drive on!

Karenna and Nancy,
I can relate soooo much I've been pretty down for about a week now. I just had a little talk with my son about basketball - he started the season out of shape because he had surgery the first day of school and wasn't given clearance to run until the day before practice started. Well he worked his butt off all season to first play and to get a chance to start and about a week ago it happened. Now all of a sudden he doesn't want to go to practice and he's says it borring. So I talked about the fact that he met a big goal now he needs to set a new one to aim for. In talking to him I realized I needed to do the same thing. Now reading your posts I realize I haven't done it that's why I'm still blah about the whole thing - not falling off the wagon just not pushing to the next level like I could. Thanks for the reminder!!!

I do spend quite a bit at the grocery. It is very expensive to eat healthy; however, you save in the long run as stated above (healthcare, eating out). Try getting a good set of plastic storageware and make the more expensive items convenient yourself. That new Smart Spin is great. QVC has a 36 piece.
Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (55 posts) at 06:54 AM
As vegetarians, quality protein in my household means lots of $$. We've made commitments to being responsible about the types of dairy and eggs we buy - only free range organic/non-cruelty products. Because of this, and because of our new way of eating, our grocery bill now runs about $150 per week (for 2 people!!!)...
However, we are no longer going out to eat every other night, buying lunch at work, ordering in, and no longer buying alcohol... our bill before was about $100 per week, give or take. I figure with all the the things we're not doing, we're actually saving quite a bit.
Of course we're both going to need entirely new wardrobes by the time we're finished with the challenge..... But that's FINE with me!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (86 posts) at 08:06 AM
I only cook for one, so it's considerably less for me, but WAY less than I was spending before. I average about $35/week on groceries -- in part because when I plan my meals for the week, I plan to cook up 2-3 recipes and divy them up into single portion sizes and freeze them, and repeat meals to use up everything I've bought before it goes bad. I'm also a coupon fanatic. =)
I also spend less money eating out. I work out at home, so no gym fees or gas cost there for me. Protein I buy once every couple of months, so let's say an extra couple of dollars a week. Overall, I'm spending WAY less with this new way of life!
Body for Life Forum Message by Webmaster (65 posts) at 08:42 AM
I hear that... another cost factor is buying not just foods for BFL, but healthier foods... I buy a lot more organic than I used to and also stuff like grain-fed/non-hormone eggs (25% the fat of regular eggs w/ omega-3 & lutein -- eating some now mixed with grilled diced ham, onions & mushrooms added in :) ).
Like someone said above tho, still a lot cheaper than eating out!
And like you said, some of those things are for convenience... remember tho that things that add convenience and time savings also end up reducing your calorie expenditure usually... i'm sure you burn several X the calories opening and draining that can than just opening a packet and dumping it out :) i've started de-simplifying/conveniencing some things because of this... also that pre-packaged tuna costs almost twice what the canned tuna does!
If you spend only $12 a day on BFL food then I'd say you're doing really well as I would expect it to be higher than that since that's only $2/meal. There's a reason junk food is cheap - not much quality food in it -- quality food costs $$ :) eating more quality protein is more expensive for one thing :)
Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (445 posts) at 09:31 AM
Well, we're a family of four and living on a pretty tight budget, so I usually buy frozen boneless skinless chicken breasts a few bags at a time. I also get second nature eggs (like egg beaters) because they're cheaper than egg beaters and it ends up being cheaper in the long run than buying a dozen eggs and throwing most of the egg away. I buy protein powder which I usually only use once a day and then I buy one bar for each day. That way I can have either for a quick meal. I buy slicked chicken breast/turky from the deli to have at lunch and one of my snack meals. I totally don't have money for all the organic, non-cruel, non-cage raised stuff-that stuff is just too outrageously priced and doesn't really matter enough for me to try and scrape up the extra dough. I hardly ever eat bread, so i just buy a package of whole wheat flatbread and it lasts forever cause 1/2 of one sheet is a serving and I make a pita type thing with that. Plus, it's more flexible than pita bread so it doesn't tear when you're trying to put stuff in it. We usually have about $150 per 2 weeks to spend on groceries, so I just have to get whatever's cheapest and still BFL approved.
Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (445 posts) at 09:34 AM
slicked chicken? that was supposed to be sliced-he he he
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (606 posts) at 09:44 AM
Ok I sat down and worked out the actual cost this time.
Each day costs me around $13.39 - 6 days a week - $80.34 + whatever take out we get on free day (e.g. pizza = $25.00)
Free day is a lot more expensive than regular days!
Body for Life Forum Message by JanaM (32 posts) at 10:07 AM
I end up spending so much less for one simple reason. Since I started BFL I now bring my lunch and snacks to work. So instead of spending about $10-$15 a day on those things I can get about a weeks worth of lunches to take with me. So for me it is cheaper to eat healthy.

I spend a lot to eat healthily in China. Cottage cheese is $4.50 here and a box of high fiber cereal is 10 bucks! Not to mention the $150 in excess baggage fees to get protein powders and bars over here on the plane. Getting Western foods is ridiculously expensive, but I figure any $ I invent in my health is a good investment to make.
I guess the trade off there is that my ayi (home helper) prepares EFL meals, chops up salads, and washes out that damn blender everyday! Can't complain too much about life in China I guess. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (68 posts) at 08:44 PM
I do a LOT of Costco shopping. They have a huge container of organic baby greens for $3.69 that would cost about $8 for the same amount in the grocery store. Add a huge bag of iceberg salad mix (it makes it go a little farther) for $1.69 and I have salad for about 2 weeks for a family of four. I get frozen chicken breasts in the big bags at Costco for $13. Cottage cheese comes in a HUGE container for about $4. The Eggbeater stuff (it's not actually the brand name) is super cheap there as well. I throw half the cartons in the freezer and it lasts for a long time. Oatmeal is about $4 for two huge bags. Bread is $4 for 2 loaves of the 100% whole wheat. I get my natural peanut butter there for $6.99 for two big containers.
I also buy Foster Farms ground turkey there for $2.19 a lb. I just made a triple batch of the Turkey Meatloaf from EFL and the turkey was only $10. Their hamburger is REALLY good there and it's fairly lean. We cook it on the Foreman grill so a lot of the fat drips off. I buy my sliced ham there because it's super low in sodium (for ham), practically fat free and you get two big packages for $6. I use one and freeze the other. Sliced turkey and chicken is also a good deal there as well...two big packages for around $7.
All in all, I probably spend around $500 a month for a family of four and that includes any supplements. We eat really good with lots of fruits, veggies, and quality meat, fish, and chicken. My kids don't really drink juices and never have had soda. They have their sport top bottles of water and we refill it from our Brita pitcher during the day.
When we don't eat healthy, our bill does go up. The prepackaged foods are much more expensive than doing it yourself. I can make a quality, healthy meal for my family for well under $10. I can't do that if I'm using crap! LOL

Well up here in Canada's far north, I am a huntress and love fishing. I have a frezzer full of moose. One freezer full of fish. And soon a freer to be filled with Caribou, caribou hunting is almost at it's peak. For the caribou we drive 8 hours north to Yellowknife, from there drive an additional 3 hours north and then spend time on skidoos to hunt.
In the fall for moose, we have two camps. One that we drive to, the other we boat (3 hours) to get to our cabin. In the winter we travel by skidoo 3 hours per way to some lakes that have super awesome pickeral (ice fishing). In the summer we go out on the great slave lake and get a ton of whitefish. Oh yeah, we also hunt ducks and geese, my fave. IT adds up to several thousand dollars per year, but a sport and tradition I carry on. I buy chicken maybe once a week. And maybe steak (beef) once every two. weeks. Supplement wise, I do the shakes and vitamins.

J-Dub, I was wondering the same thing. Even if I just buy lettuce and spinach and make the salad myself, the longest it's ever lasted is 1 week. If I buy the prewashed bagged stuff, it's nasty by the 3rd day. What's your secret Melanie?

Jim, first off, great progress! Keep with it! Can’t wait to see Week 12 pictures! Second, when someone tells me I could lose more weight if I did more cardio, I tell them that I could also lose 25 pounds if I cut my right leg off, too. But, if they don’t mind, I’ll stick to what I’ve been doing. It seems to work!
Every trainer I have spoke to knows of the BFL program and endorses it. They may recommend some ‘fine tuning’ based upon their own knowledge and experiences, but they all know it works. So, I recommend that you steer clear of those fitness trainers that haven’t done their homework!

How can a professional trainer not be familiar with BFL? It's been around for YEARS. There is so much mediocrity in every industry these days, it seems. Makes me not want to leave my house anymore! =)
Body for Life Forum Message by jstone (223 posts) at 08:16 AM
I live in a rural part of Southern Indiana ... this county has only three gyms , and two personal trainers that I know of, and both of them are very familiar with BFL.
I'd question the credibility of any personal trainer that wasn't in tune with what works in transforming your body.
Sheesh !!
Body for Life Forum Message by nico (20 posts) at 08:24 AM
This trainer his awfull. How can he said that cardio's seems to be the key to weight loss. Gosh I lost those 40 pounds of fat with almost no cardio's. Glad you did not get contract with him and I can't beleive that they are some trainer's that start their customers with 4 to 5 times a week cardio's, knowing that the bod will adat to it. It's a shame. You know much more then him to what your body respond the best. Fired him lol and very surprised he doesn't know about BFL.

I went into 24 hr by my house just to see how astronomical the membership fee was a week or 2 ago and even a trainer who had only been there 3 mos has heard of BFL and loved the fact I was doing it. I want to walk in there again at the end of the week and say, ok hahaha. How do u like me now?
Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (445 posts) at 09:42 AM
Hey Jim! Somebody told me a week or so ago that a lot of "trainers" don't advocate BFL because most of it's principles go against all of the myths that they've been following for decades. Also, they don't like it because it wasn't their idea. They hate that someone else can come up with a program that works and it doesn't coincide with what they normally teach. Well, when you get to your goal and you're totally fit, you can go up to that trainer and be like "Well, I guess I toooooold you! *snap* *snap* *snap*". Wait-you're a guy, I guess you can't do that. But you can flex in front of him!
Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (43 posts) at 01:16 PM
Hey everybody! Thanks for the feedback.
I don't think the trainer was pretending not to know about BFL because he was staring at my BFL Success Journal as if he'd never seen one before.
I think a lot of trainers are like some of the many doctors I've seen over the last few years. They get so full of themselves that they don't listen to any of the people they are supposed to serve. They so much time feeding their own arrogance that they fall behind in their profession.
I also think that trainers are so focused on making money that they have more interest in following programs that require longer trainer sessions and thus more money for them.

Seven is more accurate. Was this the trainer that knew a lot (hee hee)?!?!? The bad part is that you will get so many different percentages depending on what method you use (electrical impedance, height/weight, calipers). I don't know why because they should all be using the same formula. Water immersion is absolutely the most accurate way to go. Check this website out: http://www.abcbodybuilding.com/magazine/ultimatebodyfattestingguide.htm
I thought it was good info.

This BF% thing is just causing distraction. The fewer things that take your focus away, the better.
Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (43 posts) at 01:21 PM
John - My interest in body fat is simply to measure my progress. As long as the measurements are consistent enough to give me accurate feedback on my progress. then I don't care much what the actual number is. Also, I want to have someway to make sure I'm not losing muscle.
Jim

Ah, OK. I just want to make sure that you are not thrown off the track when you see different numbers then you expect.

Regarding losing muscles, I still owe you an answer. You realize that your body had to develop significant muscles mass to carry your weight. Those extra muscles are not going to stay as you slim down because the load on the muscles decreases. Do you mind if in order to lose 100lb of fat you sacrifice 25lb of lean mass?

I don't know if you have heard about this little device "Omron" Body Fat tools, but alot of B.B. are tracking their progress with it. For sure being 18 or 17 or 16% doesn't really matter but I think that tracking the progression of fat shedding or muscles add is nice. You can take a look at it here: http://www.safehomeproducts.com/SHP/HH/Body_Fat_Analyzer.asp
And I think that the cheaper price is at www.bodybuilding.com where you can buy it.

I am currently using Betagen as "perscribed" on the bottle 10g 3 times a day... If I cut this down to 10g only twice a day does anyone know whether this will still be effective?
thanks!

Unless you want to hold water like the Hoover Dam, you only need to use the maintenance level of 5 grams a day! This is definitely more cost effective also!![]()

would that be 5grams 3 x daily? or 5 grams for the whole day?

If you don't have the Journal then read this (I love it):
"By this point in the Program, some people have already quit. Their goals weren't meaningful, and, quite frankly, they never really decided to make a change for the better. What about you? Are you ready to give up? Or are you going to continue on and become a success story?"...."Just be honest with yourself--if you're not committed to finishing, stick a fork in it already."
Is that powerful or what? Bill also proceeds to write "Here's how: simply write the words, 'I quit!' on the cover of (this) book, in big, bold print, and sign your name under it." He then provides his address and states that he will send you a check for the cover price!!!!

I am in! I have done challenges before and I even finished a couple but with no big results. In most I usually give up for some stupid reason like no time around week 5 or 6. This time I am so determined that I am now in week 7 and I have not missed a workout and have not cheated on any meals since I started. This for me is a huge accomplishment as I was probably having about 2-3 free days every week before this challenge and always found a way to justify them with excuses like stress, tired, boredom. Not this time. I am definitely in for life not just 12 weeks. Good Luck to everyone and stay positive.

OK, so now I know I am adjusting to the BFL life. My alarm didn't go off this AM, and I didn't wake up. When I did wake up, it was too late to get my workout in this morning. Can I just tell you, I was PI$$ED bigtime!!!! The first words out of my mouth were complaints that I wouldn't be able to work out until I get home this afternoon. That means no extra cardio today. It almost was enough to make me have a really bad day.
But how cool is that?? I was actually upset that I didn't "get to" work out this morning!!! My mindset is changing, and I really feel like that is a bigger accomplishment than almost anything so far. I am well on my way to making this a PERMANENT change!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (86 posts) at 07:57 AM

Body for Life Forum Message by Jmskelton (54 posts) at 08:58 AM
Oh how I can relate! Last night when I got home from work, my husband told me he had a business meeting and needed to leave at 6 am. This is typically my time at the gym, so needless to say, I was not happy. The good news is my gym is open 24 hrs Mon-Thurs, so I left the house at 4:45 and started working my cardio at 5:02 am and was back home by 5:45 am. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by markharrill (30 posts) at 09:03 AM

I hit snooze too many time this a.m. and will have to do my cardio later, too. But I did get up, brush my teeth, and get a glass of water. :-) Then, back to snooze-ville for a little while.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (606 posts) at 12:29 PM
I used to hit snooze too much also, getting out of bed was a struggle.
Now, I am waking up before 6am on the damn weekends also when I don't have to. :\ the one bad thing is I can't sleep in when I want to now! LMAO
Body for Life Forum Message by markharrill (30 posts) at 01:07 PM
I second that feeling. I need a couple less hours of sleep a night with this program. I am never tired during the day and am back to my customary 5-6 hours of sleep nightly!
Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (55 posts) at 01:40 PM
Yeah, I normally only do 5-6 hours sleep, but while on BFL, I am forcing myself to a minimum 7+ hours. I'm doing extra cardio, and I want to really make sure I don't have any muscle loss. Sleeping helps with that, so I miss all the good shows in the evenings in order to be up at 4:30-4:45AM. Seems to be working - have actually gained about 3lbs of muscle so far (am on week 5, day 2). This morning I don't even remember hitting the snooze or anything, so I must have been a complete zombie and needed the sleep. You can bet I'll be punishing this ol' body tonight though!!!! Heh heh heh....

I've been on this forum for a while now and now & again a word comes up which I have never heard of (mostly during conversations revolving round free day!). In the context they were mentioned I know the ones I'm going to list are all either foods or to do with food. Britain tends to be behind America on a lot of things so I'd be grateful if someone could enlighten me as to what these things are and if indeed Britain is missing out on something!!
Here's my list - Miracle Whip, crockpot, Krispy Kreme, Quiznos, S'mores, Sloppy Joes, egg beaters and my favourite Hack in a Sack..!! What are these things!?!
Thank you! :)
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (86 posts) at 08:02 AM
Miracle Whip is like mayonnaise; crock pot is a slow cooker; Krispy Kreme is a donut chain (be GLAD you don't know about that one!); Quiznos is a submarine sandwich chain; S'Mores are graham crackers, toasted marshmallows and chocolate (or there is a cereal by the same name that is supposed to duplicate that taste); Sloppy Joes are a sandwich consisting of loose ground beef (as opposed to a patty) cooked in sauce and served on a hamburger bun; egg beaters are a brand of egg replacement you can buy in cartons with no fat because it's made up of just whites; Hack in a Sack, if I'm not mistaken, is someone's name for the burger chain Jack in the Box.
What else ya got? ;)

Krispy Kreme :-) ...I live in the "hometown" where Krispy Kreme started Winston Salem NC!
Krispy Kreme donuts are the best! They melt in your mouth and they are the best when you get them "HOT and NOW!"... my father has told me that when Krispy Kreme opened their first store in Connecticut, they had a Cop directing traffic!!!!! People where waiting over an hour to try this delicious donut... *lol*
Miracle Whip (is lower in fat then Mayo and to me, taste a whole lot better)
Body for Life Forum Message by Webmaster (65 posts) at 08:46 AM
talking about how delicious krispy kreme donuts are probably isn't the best idea in a BFL forum ;) let's not make people cheat by putting ideas in their heads!!! :)
My wife prefers Miracle whip over mayo generally too... but neither are BFL approved :)
When I do have mayo, I use hellman's just 2 good light mayo.... it's about 1/4 the calories of mayo, 2g carbs, low fat, not a bunch of extra sugar... made primarily from soybean oil if i remember :) it's the closest compromise i've found to real mayo so far :) kraft's light mayo is ok but about twice the calories and more fat than just 2 good :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (343 posts) at 08:49 AM

I use just 2 good as well and I don't normally like mayonnaise, but I use it on sandwiches and to mix with tuna fish or chicken salad. Sorry Webmaster, but I have to say one more thing about Krispy Kremes-you don't even have to chew them!! I read somewhere that chocolate is the only fat that melts at body temperature, but I think they should add Krispy Kremes to the short list.

Tracy, I can't tell you about the Krispy Kreme thing, but I think this will cause a shudder or two. You can beignet type things if you get a package of canned biscuits and poke a hole in the middle of each one, then DEEP FRY them until they float to the top. While they're still hot, you cover them with powdered sugar. Ohhhhhhhh yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I ate 8 of these in one sitting. I didn't eat them again after that for about 3 years.

(I actually found a recipe for them - i might try them this freeday, if i dare) They cover the oreos with a type of sweet batter, then fry them and sprinkle with powdered sugar. They melt in your mouth. I only had one (i could almost hear my arteries solidify as i ate it)but the girls I was with packed 'em away. Oh, and while we were eating I saw the hot black dude from "Law and Order" and got a pic with him. Fried Oreos, Det. Green, and NYC. Yeah, that was a good day...

Oh - we refer to Krispy Kreme's as "lil' fat bombs" in my house. Seems really appropiate, i think.
Body for Life Forum Message by jstone (223 posts) at 09:06 AM
Ok, I've referred to this a couple different times , so I thought I'd go out and steal it from another forum and post it here ... lol
Here’s a little inspiration for those of you who are worried about not seeing any changes in your body so far. It’s what I call the “Paper Towel Theory”.
Let’s assume you go out and buy two rolls of paper towels, each with only 84 paper towels on it (one for each day of the challenge). You put one aside, and keep it for future reference (your “before” picture). The other one represents you (I’ll call your paper towel you “Ed”). The core represents the lean Ed. The towels represent the fat that is covering the lean Ed. For sake of argument, let’s say that Ed wants to lose 21 pounds of fat, so (84/21) each sheet represents a quarter-pound of fat lost. Let’s also assume that Ed loses his fat equally during each day of the challenge.
Each day during the first week, you tear a sheet off of Ed, representing the fat he has lost for the day. Next, you put Ed next to the full roll (“Big Al”) for comparison. No noticeable difference!!! Even at the end of the week! This can’t be working for me!
But, being a good Ed, you continue to follow Body-for-LIFE. At the end of weeks two and three, you continue to compare Ed to Big Al, and still notice very little difference. That stinkin’ Bill Phillips MUST be a liar!
But Ed is determined! He works hard! Hitting his 10’s…eating his 6 daily meals. Three more weeks go by, the sheets peeling off day after day, before Ed gets up the courage to stand next to Big Al again. Holy
Myoplex! Ed is skinny! OK, not skinny, but less huge!!!
By the end of the 12-week Body-for-LIFE program, Ed is down to his lean dream, or somewhere near it. Ed is happy. We are happy. Big Al – well he’s not so happy.
The lesson to be learned is that fat, like paper towels, comes off in sheets. When you are heavy, you are big around. And when you are big around, that fat is spread over a MUCH larger area – just like that
outside towel sheet. The closer you get to the lean you, the more each lost pound of fat shows, because it is spread over a smaller area.
While the outside sheet may only cover 1 layer of the roll, the inside sheet may go around 4 times. That last sheet looks like it gives you 4 times the results of the first sheet, but in reality, the results are the
same – your perception is just different! And you’ll never see the inside, if you aren’t patient while the outside is coming off!
Body for Life Forum Message by markharrill (30 posts) at 09:09 AM
That is a great post! Wish I could pull off six or seven towels a day...
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (343 posts) at 09:13 AM
I have heard about this theory before. It makes total sense and its something that we all need to understand. It takes time, hard work and determination to get these results. We will get these results. We just have to be patient. Thanks for posting that Jim. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Margroovy (48 posts) at 09:22 AM
That is the best weight loss analogy I have ever heard. And I've not heard that one before. THAnk you for sharing it. I've already copy pasted it in an email to a lot of my family and friends who are weight loss oriented people, but get discouraged when results are not instantaneous. THanks again!
Body for Life Forum Message by beancounter (18 posts) at 09:24 AM
I love that theory, just because it has helped me understand my frustration the past two weeks. Pants are starting to feel looser though...slowly but surely I will get there.
Ok, can I just tell you something...I work in an office where we all sit on our butts and stare at a computer screen all day long. For some reason, the 'leaders' of our little team have decided that feeding us is a way to get us to work harder..or something like that. We actually have a 'Food Court' as it is referred to and they just filled the nacho machine and opened the case of chips. Yeah, I said case. Unbelievable.
And out of the other side of their mouths they are encouraging us to eat right and excercise to help our heart (via company-wide e-mails from our health insurance provider). Someone PLEASE tell me how those damn nachos will help my heart!!

Okay, so a good cardio day today - I am happy about that.
The whole non-smoking thing isn't going GREAT, but I am making some progress. I didn't smoke all day yesterday, but had 3 that night, also, this morning, I did not have one on the way to the gym like I usually do. Only 1/2 a smoke on the way to work (that's two less already today).
While it is not the greatest improvement, it's better than the 3/4 of a pack I usually smoke a day. So I am happy!
I was also thinking about what Tracy said regarding giving a card to someone. There is a really large girl at our work who is not doing BFL, but is going up to the treadmill every morning and doing a bit of a workout. For her, thats more than what she was doing so I am making a card for her in Publisher and I am going to leave it on her desk to find when she gets back from her walk this morning.
That's a great idea Tracy :)

Hey, the smoking thing, at least it is progress. (that is one of the hardest things to do, is quit smoking) for what you are doing is to be commended.
Congrats.

Good going Tai!!!
I'm really happy for you and I'm CERTAIN that you'll be able to accomplish this as well!
And that's sooo nice of you to give a card to the lady at work! That's very sweet and I'm sure it will encourage her tremendously!
Body for Life Forum Message by beancounter (18 posts) at 09:31 AM
That is very thoughtful to give her a card. You never know just how much that could mean to her...It could mean the difference in quitting or keeping up with her walking.
Quitting smoking is a real (&^%$$# to do. Keep up the progress...it's worth it. You'll be amazed at how much better your food will taste and all the smells you missed.

Tai, remeber one day at a time. Even if you smoked 5 less cigarettes today then you normally would THAT is progress. Hang in there . You CAN do it. :)

O.K., so, since most of the "regulars" have answered this week's fun and interesting thread, I was hoping that maybe people could send me some pm's about their idea for next week's. It can be any two questions whether it's something trivial like the key chain, movie thing or something thought provoking like the questions Cheetara asked. The only fair way I could come up with for picking who does the next one is to put names in a hat. And I hope everyone knows that I'm only heading this whole thing up so it will be kind of organized. I feel the need to say that cause I have this worry about coming off as self-important or something-don't want to look egotistical, ya know? So, if anybody has ideas, just pm them to me and on Saturday, I'll pick and let everyone know (on this thread) who's gonna do it on Monday. Then, from now on, if I run out of people to get ideas from, I'll just post to this thread again and ya'll can send me some new ones! Sound good? O.K., then, let 'em rip!

My family is Southern - so NOOO southern girl can come off as self-important/egotistical!!!! (just my 2 cents)
Thanks for doing this thread!

Okay.. I'll stop hogging the questions now - but I do have more if needed. smile.

I really hate Mondays... When I get to Tuesday's I am much better, but do I have something to tell you. Yesterday on my way home from work, I stop in a tan at my favorite salon and I got in the bed and after about 5-6 minutes I started to smell something, smelled like burning wires.. So I looked out of my bed and around the room and didn't see crap. Then I rolled over onto my stomach and heard a huge pop, crack and OUT OF THE BED I CAME! lol.. My suntan bed was on FIRE! The lady at the salon was yelling for me to get out of the room, and my reply was," I CAN'T, I AM BUTT NAKED! and here I am trying to find my clothes so I could get out of there! Me being in the Navy so long, the fire didn't scare me, but running outside butt naked did! lol.

Actually I was pretty calm, it was the little blond behnd the counter that was freaking out, she didn't even know where the fire extinguisher was??? Feel secure? NO. But I yelled back at her and told her I was naked and was trying to get enough clothes on to step out and I had my uniform with me so you know that you can't walk around like that in publice but like I said earlier, didn't notice my bra wasn't fastened all the way until I was driving off....lol..

I have been sick and throwing up off and on since Friday. I'm finally back at work today, but still very shaky, no appetite and ZERO strength. I'm thinking of just giving myself this week...eating reasonably (chicken soup and toast is the only thing that even sounds good)and no workouts and then starting week 5 (which should have started yesterday) next Monday. If I feel up to it I might try to walk on the treadmill...
How badly is this going to hurt my progress? The thought of cottage cheese, chicken or a protein shake literally makes me nauseous right now....
Thanks!

I also had the flu a few weeks back. I could not breathe but just started back slowly. Luckily, I had only missed 2 workouts. Just do what you can when you feel you can start and if that means slow, then start slowly and build back up. Thanks.

YES!!!!! Take the week off. This is NOT the time to push your body. You need rest to get well again.
Eat what you can. Light meals. STAY HYDRATED. This is very very important. While you can't workout this week, you can continue to eat healthy. Listen to your body. Do what you can. Try to remember this is for LIFE. Things happen in our lives. You will get through this and then you can get back to your workouts again when you are well. Take care and REST!!!! :)

Hi! I actually was not sick myself (just felt really bad and was too worried) but I had to be in the hospital for a week (C1, week 5) with my son. I eat only hospital food and did not exercise the whole week. It was ok. I took of 2, 2 pounds that week, but the workout next week was just a little harder than before. But it didn’t make much difference. I think when you are feeling sick you should rest and continue when you feel better (That’s only my opinion). It is important to not feel like you have failed. You will be back on track next week and have more energy. I agree with Jmskelton - take is slow.

I went to the gym today and the manager who has witnessed my transformation asked me if I could
come in and do a motivational talk about my transformation.
I am so excited. I love what BFL has done for me and want to share it with everyone.
They want me to bring in my pictures too.
Eight months ago, I never thought that I would be in a position to talk about how to improve your health and fitness level.
Yeah me!!!!
Thanks for listening, Annette

This is my first post, although I've been getting encouragement from the forum for months now. Since this is week 12 for me (yee-ha), I've finally gotten up the guts to let you know how much I appreciate the way you encourage each other (and me).
I started BFL in November at 48 years old and have stayed with the program very closely, no bells or whistles added (I chose to try it without suppliments). This even through the holidays (that was a challenge), a car accident that left me sore for a week (thankfully, that's all it did), and even through a week's vacation. I've lost at least 20 pounds of fat -- don't know yet how much muscle I've gained, but it's starting to show for the first time ever. I feel great, and this Sunday I received another comment from a friend who hadn't seen me for a few months-"Hey, you lost some weight! What diet did you use?" They're always intrigued when I explain that BFL is a lifestyle.
My wife and kids are excited about it, and I'm amazed at how it has helped me feel better emotionally and spiritually as well as physically. Now I'm in the process of trying to decide how to "raise the bar" a bit for myself for the next 12 weeks! (any suggestions?) Maybe after this week, I'll get the courage to post some before and after pics; you won't see any award-winners, but I'm pleased! BFL is certainly working for me.

Congratulations Stryker! As far as raising the bar, I read (I think in the EFL book) where Bill said in each workout we should strive for a personal best. So when I decided to kick it up a notch in cardio, I started paying attention to the distance on the treadmill readout, and my goal each time I work out is to go a little further than the last time. I'm also going to change up my weight routines each 4 weeks to surprise my muscles into having to pay attention and work harder.
Be proud of your accomplishments! And glad you posted! =)

Thanks for all the congrats-- you people are great! You've convinced me -- I'll post pics at the end of the week (when I talk my wife into taking some "week-12 shots").
In case you haven't noticed, Mahalia, I'm trying hard to appear calm and collected--but don't be fooled -- making it to 12 weeks is REALLY a big deal for me! I have never stayed this disciplined on a fitness plan for this long before. There were times when it seemed like I was in a no-end plateau, but hung in there, and now I can't imagine NOT eating and working out like this.
And the rewards are great: Saturday I attended a wedding in a suit I haven't been able to wear comfortably in 10 years (yes, it is still in style)...and it was loose around the waist! I was pumped!
I still have a ways to go, but that's what this is all about, right? In some ways, I still feel like I'm just getting the hang of it,the exercising and eating right. But by 12 weeks, it really has become a lifestyle.
Nuf said. Thanks for the encouragement!

Ok, I FINALLY see some progress! Last night I had no clean PJ's so I pulled out these flannel Pj's that I have NEVER worn because they were too tight to sleep comfortably in. THEY WERE BAGGY!! Ok, part of me wants to think I remember the way the used to fit wrong, that maybe they were always fitting this way but then why did I pack them away?! I'm still not ready to put my pictures up, I have not seen anyone as big as me yet and I'm a friggin chicken, not to mention embrassed. I'm just excited that this is FINALLY working! This is week 6 (half way there!) I'm ordering my wedding dress on May 15 and I'm hoping to be a size 16. I don't know if that is pushing it or not. I started in a 24/26 and now I'm probably a 22- almost 20. I started on Jan 10. Does anyone out there think this is a possible goal? I would LOVE to be a size 12 by my wedding on October 8. I"M SO EXCITED!! I"M GETTING MARRIED AND I"M GOING TO LOOK LIKE A WOMAN INSTEAD OF A PIG!!!!!!!!!!!

Ooops! Wow I have been away for a few days. Okay, so, I had a GREAT weekend. Didn't eat too much, but what I ate was definately not authorized. Super gourmet food and fine wine. I missed three workouts.
I am trying to get back into the swing of things. It sucks that I was (am) so on fire for this but I miss a few days and can't come back. Somebody HELP ME PLEASE! I want to come back. What happened to my motivation?!
Body for Life Forum Message by jstone (223 posts) at 01:51 PM
One meal, one workout at a time Nikki.
You'll build momentum up in no time !!
You know what it takes. Just put it into action !

I hear ya Nikki!
Saturday I ate fine, but missed a couple of meals...when I worked out got very nauseas and dizzy so I couldn't complete my whole routine.
Sunday was free day and some out of town guests stayed over. By the time they left on Monday, I wasn't too motivated to do much of anything...only had 2 meals plus UNAUTHORIZED cheesecake because of Valentines day.
Today, I didn't get my lazy butt out of bed so I didn't get in a workout...won't be able to tonight either!
This is 3 full days of not working out!!!GRRR....what is wrong with me??
I've been SOOOOOOOO on fire and boy, my foot slipped and I didn't just stumble, I fell flat on my a..!
At any rate...you're not alone! I'm pulling myself back up right along side of you!
I'm learning to FORGIVE myself and move on...guilt doesn't motivate me too well!
You CAN do it!

Whats done is done. You can only go forward. So give it all you got and don't worry about what you didn't do.
It's okay, try not to beat yourself up too much.
Body for Life Forum Message by nikki (159 posts) at 02:56 PM
Thanks for the support.
I did my cardio. It was pathetic! I feel so weak and lethargic! It's amazing what a couple days off does to your energy level. Not to mention the total lack of nutrition I've had over the last few days. I'm hoping that my legs are just a little sore...I did do a LOT of walking over the weekend. (at least SOME salvation).
I am not beating myself up! This is LIFE! I will have vacations. I will have party days. That HAS to be okay.

O.K., so Feb. 21 is mine and my husband's anniversary. The only way we can go out for dinner is to go on a weekend because my sister has to come over and watch my kids and she goes to work really early on weekdays. So, I think we're going to go Saturday. I was thinking of planning to make Saturday my free day and treat Sunday (my usual free day) as a regular day. Does anyone see any potential problems with this?
Body for Life Forum Message by jstone (223 posts) at 01:53 PM
NOPE !!! No problem at all.
Body for Life Forum Message by beegee714 (54 posts) at 01:54 PM
I often do this if I know something special, or at least tempting, is coming up. Enjoy your anniversary.
Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (445 posts) at 01:55 PM
Oh, I'm definitely going to enjoy. My husband and I are two of the most different people you could ever meet. The fact that we've made it 2 years without killing each other is enough to warrant some serious eating.

Body for Life Forum Message by Dan97526 (65 posts) at 02:01 PM
No problem at all, I would think. I did the same thing this last weekend. I usually have my free day on Sunday, but I had to help a friend move on Saturday. It seemed easier to just go ahead and eat what-/whenever with the work we were doing. So I took it Saturday and ate BFL on Sunday.

First, fit, you'll have no problem with changing your free-day date, because you are one organized, determined chica!
Second, I have to laugh at myself because when I first read your post, Feb. 21 sounded Way Far Off and I thought you were silly to plan so far ahead.
Third, Happy Anniversary! My fourth will be April 21.

Yesterday was my free day and usually I would eat junk from the time I got up until I go to bed. But yesterday was different. Instead of my usual anything chocolate breakfast I just had a bagel something I usually don't eat. Then a turkey wrap, baked lays, and skim milk for lunch. The only really bad thing I ate all day was the pizza I had for dinner. Not very romantic but that is honestly what I wanted. Also, I found myself snacking all day long but on fruit and vegetables even though their was donuts and cookies and all kinds of junk food for me to eat. This is week 7 for me and also the first time I have not gone all out on junk food. And for the first time in 7 weeks I do not have a free day hangover. One more thing. Because my husband does bfl too, he was nice enough to not buy me chocolate. Although I did buy him chocolate but we were both so stuffed after pizza we decided to wait until next free day to eat it. This program works if you don't over do it. Obviously working out and eating right are becoming more of a habit than free days. I also got up at 4 a.m. and worked out because I used Sunday as a free workout day because I wasn't feeling too enthusiastic and wasn't sure if I would be able to hit my 10's . Good decision because I definitely hit my 10's yesterday. Have a great day everyone. Jana

Okay, this is a little more personal than I would like to get but I believe I'm pregnant (not 100% sure yet) does anyone know if it would be safe to continue with the program? I've taken the last week off because of this but I would like to start at square one again tomorrow if it's safe...ideas? suggestions?
Thanks

I would talk to your doctor, but I have heard a number of people on here say they did BFL or a variation of BFL (based on doctor's recommendations)while they were pregnant.
Body for Life Forum Message by TJ (59 posts) at 04:03 PM
I concur. Even though it’s probably okay, please get a doctor’s opinion.
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (332 posts) at 05:17 PM
Yes, yes -- be very specific and discuss with your doctor. I would bet you can do a variation -- good nutrition and daily exercise (assuming no problems requiring bed rest) are extremely important. And the weight-training may change a lot as your pregnancy progresses because pregnancy hormones work to "loosen" your joints and ligaments for a while (probably so you can get the baby out). This means the risk of injuring yourself while lifting is much greater.
I hope your news is good when you receive it -- whether that be Yay, a baby! or Whew, not yet. :-)

Ooo exciting stuff. definately talk to the doctor - we have a pregnant BFler around here somewhere, but shes been awol a bit with sickenss etc.
She would be an excellent person to talk to regarding this (apart from your doctor).

What I learned when I became certified for Aerobics, It is ok to contine a program you are already used to and connditioned to do, don't start anything new, don't used heavier wts. Some moves may have to be re-modified. Also when a PG woman lies flat on her back,( called the supine position) as if to do ab crunches, the weight of the fetus may obstruct the flow of blood back to her heart and head, sympthoms include light headed, dizzy feeling. For this reason the supine position is off limits to anyone PG after the 4th month of Pregnancy. If this should happen, roll over to your side until you feel better and then sit up slowly.. I suggest you talk with your Dr about how much exercixe you already do, good luck!
Body for Life Forum Message by needstolose (31 posts) at 05:37 PM
Thank you so much for all of your responses. I have an ultra sound scheduled with my doctor next Monday and will let you know! (sometimes women just know these things before though) Until my appt. I will continue with the program as I assume this early on wouldn't hurt anything. You guys are the best! - see I'm getting emotional (more signs)
Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (55 posts) at 08:13 PM
BTW, with BFL and pregnancy, if you are taking supplements (ESPECIALLY the DynamX products), you might want to stop until you clear all of them with your doctor and verify your pregnancy 100%.
Body for Life Forum Message by Monica (12 posts) at 06:32 PM
Ok, Here is a VERY STRANGE question. I think you guys can handle it though! lol I was once told that you were drinking enough water if your urine was almost clear. Ok, so I drink like 4-5 32 oz nalgene bottles of water every day and mine is still light yellow. Is this because of all the protein I eat or whats the deal? I can't imagine drinking more than what I already do but if thats the case then I'll just have to do it!
Body for Life Forum Message by SinCityGirl05 (252 posts) at 06:37 PM
I think you are ok with what you are drinking. Some people are just that way no matter what they drink. Like me. I can drink 30 oz, to a gallon or more and still the same thing.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tracy711 (194 posts) at 06:42 PM
Do you take a multi vitamin that could discolor it??
Body for Life Forum Message by KateKelso (3 posts) at 06:56 PM
I've heard that rumor too, but who knows if thats really true. Sounds like you're drinking enough water to not worry about it :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (332 posts) at 07:07 PM
Light yellow is pretty close to clear (I'm one of those who touts the clear-pee idea).
Smell is another indicator of hydration, but don't go sticking your head in the toilet. If you ever drink strong coffee or eat a lot of cereal/carbs in a setting, you might notice a change in color and scent (yep, your pee will smell like coffee or Cheerios).
Drink a lot of water, pee a lot, and it's all good.
Body for Life Forum Message by Mahalia (68 posts) at 08:11 PM
Vitamin B will give yoour pee a yellow color. If you are not drinking enough it is almost a neon yellowy-green, kind of weird.
Are you suplementing with any B-complex or multivitamins???
Body for Life Forum Message by Heather (6 posts) at 08:57 PM
Multivitamins will indeed do that. Mahalia, thanks for telling us about the B though. I always thought it was the C that caused it. I know that your body can only use so much C & you will urinate the excess out.
I also drink a ton of water a day. A minimum of 14 8oz glasses a day & it's always a pale yellow.
While on the subject...I have a weird sense of humor...has anyone ever smelled their urine after eating asparagus? NASTY!
Ya'll have a great night.
Body for Life Forum Message by Monica (12 posts) at 08:58 PM
Oh yeah, that does explain a lot. I never took vitamins before and now that I've started I do notice the color problem coincides! lol As for the smell? Well, I DID have asparagus last night! lol sorry, I have a sick sense of humor! Thanks for all your answers!
Body for Life Forum Message by drjlbaileyii (54 posts) at 09:06 PM
AW!!!!! the sweet smell of aspartic acid!!!! makes me want to go eat some now.. don't worry about the color.. light yellow even with that high of intake is fine..straw to clear is normal...

India rocked, but I'm happy to be back in China. I realized the second that I got there that BFL could NOT be a reasonable option. No gyms, no sidewalks, and no safe fresh fruits and vegetables. Besides I spent two days on a camel instead of a treadmill. I got a little too adventurous in trying the local fare and ended up with "Delhi Belly" for 3 days. Oh my! Good news is that I didn't gain an ounce and had a great vacation!
I'm back on track in the gym now and eating clean. (I didn't count my week in my BFLing log, so I just picked up where I left off.) Now I'm on week five and staying strong!

Hi ... just a curiosity/conversational question. I am wondering whether some of you who have really hit your goals and are now on to weight-training or sculpting or just maintenance still have fat days? Do you ever look in the mirror and see the same person you were when you started, or "feel" like your clothes don't fit or don't look right?
Just wondering how the brain reacts when we radically change the outer image.
Thanks!

Okay, my weight jumped up, my measurements except waist are bigger. My forearms are reminding me of popeye. My calves are rockhard. I am training to my 10's. I have minimal afterpain (the pain after a couple of days). My training weights have all increased from the beginning.
My weigt is up, i definatey feel more muscular.
I am going nuts. I would like to see some fat come off. I am eating sooooo clean, 6 times a day. I am eating about 100 grams protein. Lots of veggies. Carbs are as recomended. Ack,
someone tell me that this is normal. I am feeling a littl discouraged.
I am so hping that the weight melt off at weeks 7-8 happen to me.

O.K., I hear so many conflicting suggestions about how much water to drink that I have no idea how much I should actually be drinking. In BFL, Bill said to drink at least 80 oz. Then on bodyforlife.com, he says he drinks at least 100 oz. Then, there are the many people on this site who say they drink a gallon! I try to do the 100 oz. Any idea what the correct amount is?
Body for Life Forum Message by mbb (63 posts) at 11:28 PM
just drink 2 cups (16 oz) immediately when you wake up, then 2cups with every meal, and you will get 16x8=128oz no problem.

I believe that if you are going to say something, mean it. I truly meant it when I asked "Who's with me!" 17 people posted and I am psyched. I have your names written down and I am personally going to track your results. I will tell you why...I work 3rd shift and I did not get much sleep today because my favorite little guy in brown shorts rang my doorbell to bring me "presents." Although I do like packages, I do not enjoy the barking and clawing of the door that follows (darn dogs). It's very hard to go back to sleep in the middle of the day. So, I was not really "into it" today and did not feel like working out. But, dare I be a hypocrite...no way. I had just posted that awesome quote from Bill Phillips this a.m. Guess what? I worked out. HA! I am now holding myself accountable first to myself and then to you. Want to see what I found out about you?

I'm preparing to start the BFL Program next week and am currently preparing my diet, exercise program, purchasing supplements, workout gear etc etc...
I think it would be a good idea to have a "New Starter" discussion group, just so people like me can filter out the hints, tips and encouragement they need to start the progam. My biggest question is knowing what supplements I need to take. I don't want to go out and buy loads of stuff that I'm not going to need.

I am starting Week #4 and I use BFL Nutrition Bars and Ready-to-Drink Shakes for my snacks. I take a multi-vitamin and Fish Oil geltabs. I just bought Fish Oil/Borhage/Flax for when my Fish Oil is gone. My hubby swears by that combo while building muscle. I follow the BFL Journal concurrent with the BFL book. Go to the Body for Life website for sample menus. I have had great success so far. I am losing 2 pounds/week. Good luck and welcome!

I would also recommend fish or flax oil (omega-3 & omega-6 fatty acids) for weight loss or muscle gain. They are essential (meaning your body can NOT produce them on their own even tho your body needs them) fats that have a wide range of benefits including helping with weight loss, building muscle, helping prevent cardiovascular disease, etc... people in areas that live off of diets high in fish with omega-3/omega-6 have the lowest rates in the world of cardiovascular disease and stroke even if they are overweight.
I will create a beginner's forum!
