Body for Life Forum Message by FrugalMissM (36 posts) at 03:44 PM:
I'm working on pull-ups, too. Two days a week I do four sets of six slow negatives from the top position of a pull-up at the gym. I either use one of the assisted pull up machines with the knee pad locked to the ground, the leg raise station, or one of the stretching cages. I might try out this Armstrong Pull Up Program next.

Body for Life Forum Message by nico (72 posts) at 04:19 PM:
I'm still trying too to work out my pull-up. Not so easy, I'm using the assisted pull up too, but I begin to be happy I'm lowering it to 80 pounds. Hopefully, I guess I'll be able to do some alone.

Thread: How many of you workout from home? Gym? (258 Views)

I work out at home because we live in the sticks and I guess country people don't work out,ha ha. The nearest gym is about an hour away.

I'm very very surprised to see that most of you workout from home!! I always thought it was the other way around :-) It is very motivating to me to know this!

I work out at home, because I don’t live in the city. It would cost me too much to join a gym. I have a set of dumbbells and a stepper at home. So I have to be creative with my workouts. I just bought a house so I can make a little home gym there.

Body for Life Forum Message by charladee (31 posts) at 08:34 AM:
I workout at the gym, but after reading all these posts, I am thinking I should invest in some home weights and do some at home. I like doing yoga and pilates at the gym, but hate going into the weight area. I do have a treadmill at home. I like having choices because on the days I don't feel like socializing (which sometimes can keep me at the gym too long and my day is shot as far as getting my other things done)I could just get a quick one in at home, or atleast GIT R DONE and go about my day. BUT....I am afraid that I will become this recluse if I don't force myself to get out. AUGH....what do you think? SHould I invest in a home gym...or atleast some weights for upper body?

Body for Life Forum Message by personalizeabook (259 posts) at 08:52 AM:
Having equipment at home can be very useful sometimes. Last week on Friday, I couldn't make it to the gym and I had to workout from home...I have a Crossbow and some DBs those came in very handy. I don't get as good of a workout but I was still sore the next day

Body for Life Forum Message by Dan97526 (108 posts) at 05:50 PM:
I go to the gym. For me, I think, the psychological act of rolling out of bed and going to the gym at 0530 is as much a part of the program as the actual training. Furthermore, I think being at the gym increases my intensity. The gym is where exercise happens, home is where I live.

Body for Life Forum Message by momofthreegirls (191 posts) at 09:32 PM:
I do my cardio at home on a treadmill I bought very cheap off a friend. I do weights at the gym on the days I don't work (I teach part-time). I work out with friends with the weights, which has been really nice. It takes longer to get finished sometimes when we all have to go through the exercises (like the leg press), but we push each other hard and having a spotter always helps! Plus, our kids get to play together in the daycare, which is nice for them. I like to do my cardio at home because I prefer to run in just spandex and a sports bra. I hate how a shirt feels on me when I am running. At home, I can close the curtains, crank up the ipod, and sweat without worrying about what someone will say about my lumpy, bumpy body! I would love to create a home gym in our basement someday. but with three small kids, right now it is the playroom!

Body for Life Forum Message by ptwob2 (32 posts) at 10:12 PM:
I usually use the gym at work which is free as I am in the military. However, I work an hour from where I live so I also belong to a gym where I live. I only have the option of using it about 6 days a month because of my work schedule so I worked out a deal with the manager for a half price membership, which works great for me! Both gyms are great, but have different strengths and weaknesses. For me, working at home just wouldn't work. I'm too lazy and would never get around to it. Going to the gym is a discipline I make myself do and once I am there I don't get distracted (much:)

I use mine religiously to record meals and workouts (especially on weight days), but I've gotten a little sloppy about the power mindset and all that. It seems like more work than I've got the energy for by the end of the day!

Success journals? Is this an online tool, or do you mean private records?

Body for Life Forum Message by momofthreegirls (191 posts) at 09:21 PM:
I used to be really good with doing mine, then got a little lazy. I am trying to be good about using it again. It is a great way to see the progress I have made. For example, in my first cardio, I went 2.1 miles in 30 minutes, and my level 10 was 5.6. My most recent cardio, which was day 53, I went 2.5 miles in 30 minutes, and my level 10 was 6.6 miles per hour. Frog, The Success Journal is something you can purchase (I got mine at Barnes and Noble), but I know several people have modified and created their own journals.

I just started on Monday...(WOO HOO!!)and my free day is Sunday. I've read in some posts that people with the most success don't use it, and some people only use it for something small. I was wondering what real life people do and what have you found during your challenge? Thanks!! -Courtney

Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (133 posts) at 03:11 PM:
I've alternated between all out chowing down and being somewhat moderate. My first free day, I had a mexican wrap with eggs, onions and peppers, fried green tomatoes with goat cheese, a biscuit, and potatoes for breakfast, and gorgonzola pistachio risotto (which is LOADED with butter and cheese and nuts and FAT) and steamed asparagus for dinner. Last week, I ate very moderately, but did have pizza (with carmelized onions, brazil nuts, and gorgonzola) and salad with gorgonzola dressing for dinner. I've lost pretty fast, but I'm working my butt off when it's not free day (lots of extra cardio and such). I plan on being more moderate in the next 6 weeks because I am entering the competition, and this will be my last 6 weeks.

Body for Life Forum Message by popeye (13 posts) at 03:18 PM:
I try to plan out even my free days. A free meal is great or a particular food that has been on my mind that week as a snack, but not a free for all. 3500 calories is a pound o fat, and I've had 2000 calorie meals in the past.... The funny thing is that 6 weeks into this I realy don't feel like I am missing out if I eat clean. Besides after a few clean weeks a binge can make you sick as heck! Focus on the deficit of cals over the week and write down EVERYTHING that goes in your mouth. Bill even says that free days have a tendency to sort themselves out after a bit and I have found that he is right.. Best of luck to you...

Body for Life Forum Message by momofthreegirls (191 posts) at 09:37 PM:
What I like about free day is that you can choose to pig out or not pig out. In the old days, I would use them as an excuse to go crazy! now, I am usually moderate, but if I feel like eating 6 Girl Scout Cookies, I do and don't feel guilty about it. I am less likely to get into things like that during the week if I know that on the weekend there will be one day when I can eat it if I want to. Do what ever feels comfortable to you. If you try to be too rigid with your free days, you are more likely to give up because you give in to the cravings that we all feel at one time or another. You will find that some days you need it, and other days you don't. Good luck! Kim

Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (635 posts) at 11:44 PM:
Well, I pretty much go with what Bill says in the book. He says to eat whatever you want and as much as you want. I usually don't end up eating as much as I think I will, but I don't limit myself. The whole free day concept is a lot more psychological than it is physical. It's freedom, pure and simple. To know that for that one day, you don't have to work out, you don't have to fit in 6 meals, you don't have to eat clean. If I tried to control even on free day, I'd be setting myself up to fail. That said, everyone is different and I do what works for me. You'll find your niche after a few free days.

Thread: BFL and endurance sports (42 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Dan97526 (108 posts) at 06:48 PM: BFL and endurance sports
As most of you know, because I somehow seem to work it into every conversation, I'm a cyclist. I am sure this year is going to be my best season in years, but in three weeks when my 12-week challenge is done, I'm going to roll right into another 12 weeks (and I'm going to enter). Problem is, the first of April is about when I can really start riding hard. This has me concerned for four reasons: 1) The BFL diet is not a diet for a cyclist, period. Not enough carbohydrate. I am considering the simple measure of taking in an extra carb portion or two on days that I ride (or perhaps on days before I ride). However, I'm still going to have ~20 lbs of fat to lose on my next challenge. I forsee a conflict. 2) HIIT vs endurance. A typical ride last year put me in a range of 70-85% maximum heart rate, sustained for periods of up to 45 minutes, with the occasional sprint or climb that took me into the 90-100% range. It's a totally different paradigm from BFL-style cardio. I'm thinking of eliminating HIIT entirely and riding on cardio days. Maybe incorporating some sprint intervals on the bike when I ride alone, but that's about it. 3) LBWOs: Keep with them in the same manner (pyramid sets with burnout sets at the end), modify them (how?), or do away with them entirely to save my legs for cycling? 4) Most important....Ever watch the Tour and see what those guys look like after a week or so? They look like survivors of the Bataan Death March. No muscle on their upper bodies, count every rib, arms like matchsticks. While I realize part of that is by design, and I certainly won't be doing anything as brutal as the Tour de France, it's not a look I want! How am I going to keep/put muscle on while engaging in an activity which by its very nature reduces muscle mass? I know that there's a few cyclists, triathletes, and distance runners out there among you. How do you plan to make BFL compatible with your sport? Any and all feedback will be welcomed. Thanks, Dan

Body for Life Forum Message by momofthreegirls (191 posts) at 09:24 PM:
Dan, this is something I have been wondering about as well. I would like to do a few triathlons this summer, but am not sure how to progress in 4 weeks when this challenge is over. I will still have 20-30 lbs to lose, so I don't want to go nuts with the carbs. Rawillow is an endurance athlete--would like to hear her plans on what to do to train while still losing fat!

Body for Life Forum Message by Tarma (73 posts) at 09:42 PM:
I'm into my third 12 week cycle of BFL. This cycle however my focus is to increase my running distance (Goals = 1/2 marathon April; full marathon in September). Advice I have been getting, which may be useful to you as well: 1) keep the weight workouts--upper & lower body. it is essential to force your body to keep lean mass. too much aerobics will cause the body to want to lose the muscle. Also, strengthening the muscles you are pushing in your endurance training may help to prevent injury. 2) eat before/during/after long endurance training (prot + carb)so that you spare lean mass 3) for the most part i do better on a 40:40:20 nutrient split (it makes me feel good) but i have been getting alot of advice to switch to 50:30:20 (carb:prot:fat)on long run days. I'm not there yet. Too many carbs make me feel bad but I haven't experienced bad glycogen depletion yet either. I'm only 3 weeks in so I can't tell you yet how well this will work. I am tracking this on my blog & post weekly updates. My biggest concern with my goals is losing lean mass when I need to lose a bit more fat.

Body for Life Forum Message by illini12 (31 posts) at 05:30 PM:
So far this is what I take: 1. Multivitamin - for deficiencies in my diet 2. Fish Oil - for complexion 3. Coenzyme q10 - preventative heart health (heart disease runs in my family) 4. Body for Life Shakes - for convenience, maybe every other day or so 5. GNC Vanilla 100% Whey Protein - because I like to make my own shakes for breakfast and snacks 6. EAS AdvantEdge Chocolate Premium Whey Protein Powder - same as other protein powder 7. Kickstart - energy for high intensity workouts I used to take a calcium supplement (500mg 2x/day), but then I read that if you are already getting an adequate amount of calcium in your diet (which is different for everyone, but RDA is around 1000-1200mg/day), then too much extra can give you kidney stones. Since I love my cheese (and I know that I usually get at least 1000mg of calcium from the dairy I eat), I stopped taking it just to be safe... I don't know if anyone else has heard that too. I have heard a lot about Betagen and Creatine and all that... but have decided to go without for now, and if in 12 weeks I know more about it and decide I want to try it, I'll do it then. :)

I bought some thermodynamX, but haven't used it yet. I'm kinda scared! Is it necessary to use it to lose fat? Or does it just speed up the fat loss process? Currently I am only using shakes (myo. lite)I want to lose fat, but I've never been one to take pills to do it!

Body for Life Forum Message by popeye (13 posts) at 09:13 AM:
The idea with all of these pills is to put your body into "futile cycling". What that means is it helps your system release fat to be burned as as source of fuel, and then what is not burned off returns to adipose tissue(fat). They are attempts at mimicing an ECA stack, minus the potentialy dangerous effects of ephedra. I use Lipo6 from Nutrex and find the extra energy boost a plus without the jitters of ephedra..

Is this possible? I've decided to start using KickStart to help get my lazy bum out of bed in the morning, but I am worried about overload. I'm already using Betagen(2 scoops x 2 times a day) taking thermodynamiz twice a day, and usually I have 1 protein shake after workout. Is this all too much?

Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (189 posts) at 02:49 PM:

Here's a question I would like to know an answer to, Have anyone used supplements of any kind while breastfeeding?. I have a 2months old son,,nursing and doing BFL, I know the protein shakes are ok but, what about any of the capsules, I was thinking of maybe taking ThermoDynamic(spck)for the extra energy because breastfeeding, workingout, and taking care of my other son who's 4 yrs old all at the same time is draining. I just started my challange monday 2/21 and wanted to know if I can get any extra help from any of the supplements eas have. I did some research on caffeine while breastfeeding and everthing I found said up to 5 cups a day of coffee is allowed,, not that I will be drinking coffee all day(not a coffee drinker).

Body for Life Forum Message by momofthreegirls (191 posts) at 06:04 PM:
I personally wouldn't take anything while breastfeeding. Because supplements are not regulated by the FDA, they don't know how things like that transfer through breast milk and to the baby. Most of them say not to take while pregnant, so it's probably better not to take them while breastfeeding either. your energy level will rise as you workout more--just give it time! I have three kids, ages 7,5,and 3 so I know what that exhausted feeling feels like!!! Kim

Thread: My first experience with Kickstart (54 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by illini12 (31 posts) at 08:13 PM: My first experience with Kickstart
I bought some Kickstart to try after reading the thread about how much people who use it like it. I used it for the first time today right before my run. As a sidenote, I have never had a problem with caffeine, so I don't know how it would affect anyone who has a low tolerance for it. I guess I was expecting it to be like ephedra, because I realized that as I was drinking it, I got sort of butterflies in my stomach (anytime I took ephedra my heart would race just a little, and I was always nervous about working out until much later). I waited about 15 minutes for a big effect, and was almost dissapointed as I headed outside to run, feeling like it hadn't worked. (Granted, the lack of an immediate kick in the butt was most likely due to the fact that I was already really awake, seeing as how it was 6:30pm, so I imagine that effect is more potent in the morning) As I went outside, though, and started to run, I realized that I was not counting down the seconds of each running interval until I could slow down for awhile. A few times I looked at my watch and I had gone over the amount of time I was supposed to run. I know I pushed myself to run faster in each interval than I did in my run on Monday, and in my last interval I even full out sprinted the last 30 seconds. I don't know if it necessarily "enhanced" my performance, but I was most definitely 100% more focused on what I could do with the time I was spending on my workout, rather than counting down the seconds until it was over. I really enjoyed my workout, and I worked hard (dripping sweat when I came inside even though I was running in 35 degree cold!) My overall experience with it was excellent. I did not experience any jitteries/shakiness/etc., but still felt like I was totally focused on getting the most out of my workout (I hope that makes sense). I don't know if that's how anyone else feels about it or anything, but I would definitely recommend it. Sorry that was so long, but I hope that helps anyone who is thinking about trying it! :)

As the brownies cool, the top hardens. Yummy Cake...I forget what it's called: Make a chocolate cake (devil's food, german chocolate, chocolate...whatever type is your favorite) according to box directions. When you take it out of oven, poke holes in cake with wooden/plastic spoon. Next, pour a jar of caramel fudge on top (Mrs. Richardson's is really good) and then cool in refrigerator. Next, spread whipped topping on top of caramel. Next, sprinkle crushed Heath Bars on top of whipped topping. Put back in refrigerator to chill again. Let me know if anyone tries these recipes. FATTY

One of the thing I have as a "light" snack is 2 ryecrisp crackers with turkey and ff cheese (from the EFL book) It's a great snack. The other one is a piece of fruit and string cheese that's in the EFL book that's not too heavy and it's easy.

Body for Life Forum Message by FrugalMissM (36 posts) at 04:05 PM:
Do NOT mix CC with yogurt unless you want to prolong the agony of eating both nasty products. Just my opinion here, but here's my take on it: 6 oz lumpy cottage cheese + 6 oz fat free yogurt = 12 oz watery, lumpy cottage cheese with a funky yogurt taste and the consistency of vomit Seriously...do not go there if you don't LOVE both of those foods. I hated cottage cheese at first, too. Blend it smooth, add one or two packets of Equal or Splenda, and dump fruit in with it. Sugar free maple syrup with diced apples and CC is good, too. You can also make cheesecakes from it: Mini Cheesecakes 12 servings Nutrition info (per cheesecake): 54 cals, 6.2 g carb, 6.8 g protein, 2 g fiber, .3 g fat 2-1/2 full graham crackers OR replace with ¾ cup All-Bran 2 cup fat-free cottage cheese 1/4 cup sweetener (try splenda for baking) 1 tsp vanilla extract 4 medium egg whites 3 -4 Tbsp cornstarch ¾ scoop vanilla protein powder .5 cup lite whipped topping (optional..not included in nutrition info) 1. preheat oven to 350 degrees. coat 12 muffin cups w/ cooking spray; divide graham cracker crumbles among cups. 2. cream cottage cheese in food processor until fluffy, about 1 min. Add remaining ingredients, except whipped topping, and process until smooth. 3. Divide batter among muffin cups. Bake until firm, about 20-30 minutes; cool completely. Trace each muffin cup with a knife to loosen cheesecakes, remove from muffin cups and garnish each with 2 teaspoons of whipped topping. Yields one 3-inch cheesecake per serving.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mrs. 40-something (3 posts) at 05:05 PM:
Topping a baked potato with the cc is a good idea. I like that a lot. Another way I like it is (believe it or not) is in oatmeal. I stir in about a half cup per serving toward the end of the cooking time and keep cooking till the cottage cheese melts in. Then I add splenda to it. One other thing...BFL calls for lowfat (2%) cc which is much more palatable than fat free cc. Also some brands taste better than others so you might try another brand. I use dairygold. Some store brands are good and some are disgusting.

Thread: The great chicken breat debate! (73 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Cpt_Tripps (24 posts) at 03:51 PM: The great chicken breat debate!
Ok here it is...My wife and I are in disaggrement on how much chicken breaste you can eat. I know the palm size. We buy skinless/boneless chickenbreasts from sames 6lb bags. Now here is the debate. I say you can eat the entire breast she says to cut it in half to make it palm size. What is the deal? Is eating an entire chicken breast to much? The package states 1 serving is 1 breast 41g protien, but teh whole palm thing. It is about the size from the heal of my palm to near the end of my finger tips...my hands are not that big.

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (900 posts) at 04:10 PM:
I use my palm. works out to be 3-4 ounces for me. One whole breast would be about 3 servings for me.

Body for Life Forum Message by FrugalMissM (36 posts) at 04:15 PM:
Based on your most recent BFL Tracker stats, you should be eating between 1825-1956 calories a day to lose weight according to the formulas in Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle. Hussman's BMR calculator gives a range of 1510-2000 or so. Using the first set of numbers, each of your meals should be around 315 calories, 32 g carb, 32 g protein, and 7 g fat. I wouldn't go so far as cutting a whole chicken breast in half--that would be the correct portion size for your wife, but too little for you--but you should probably only be having 3/4 of a whole breast instead of the entire thing. Since your maintenance level for protein is 43 g per meal, that 41 g serving is too much.

Body for Life Forum Message by Jmskelton (147 posts) at 04:16 PM:
Same here - I use my palm and typically have to cut a whole chicken breast, about 2 to 3 servings here.

Body for Life Forum Message by nico (72 posts) at 04:25 PM:
I wouldn't worry too much about the chicken breast. It's all protein and If I'm not making any mistake, I think that, no sure here, I think 30% of it will be already burn by the digestion. A sizing for me usually looks like 3 or 4 ounces of it.

Body for Life Forum Message by Amyismynamey (1 posts) at 04:28 PM:
I don't think you can rely on the palm-portion for everyone. I have a VERY large appetite and, apparently, a fairly fast metabolism as well. I eat an entire chicken breast and I can still lose weight/maintain doing it. Because I have such a large appetite, it is imperative that I eat really clean and feed my muscles appropriately. That way, my appetite gets satisfied and I'm still able to lose at the same time.

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (326 posts) at 05:49 PM:
MOST people can use the palm-portion size for protein. Because you are using your own palm. So to your fingertips is too big, it should be the size of the palm only. If you don't feel like it's not enough food, even with your portion of carb, add veggies!

Body for Life Forum Message by silvertalons33 (93 posts) at 06:05 PM:
I just eat one breast just make sure it's not too large

Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (635 posts) at 06:48 PM:
I don't know what size chicken breasts everyone is using, but 1/2 of one is the size of my palm. I use the frozen ones, and they usually shrink a good bit during cooking, so half of one is right for me. If it's one of those monster slabs of chicken that's the size of a dinner plate (sometimes there's one really huge one in the bag), it'd be more like 1/3.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mrs. 40-something (3 posts) at 05:55 PM: alternatives to binge eating
if you are the kind of person who has a problem with compulsive eating, I would suggest the new Dr. Phil weight loss solution book. In it he suggests making a list of things to do instead of eating -- I know we all know to do that, but the difference is that you are supposed to make sure they are INCOMPATIBLE with eating. Such as, you can't "take a shower" and eat at the same time. My list has stuff like give myself a manicure, walk the dog, take a bubble bath, clean one room, call a friend or family member, brush & floss, etc. I put a list on the refrigerator and it REALLY has helped me. I take a lot of showers in the evening now to help me get past food cravings when I am not really hungry. It really takes your mind off the food when, say, watching TV just wouldn't. Hope this helps someone.

Yes, I use a trainer about once a week - $58 per session and cheaper if you purchase 6 at a time. Has really helped me with technique and form, of course I can lift heavier than normal because he is there to spot me and has introduced me to deadlifts (hamstrings). This has been very good for me as I get bored with doing leg curls and I am not coordinated enough yet (or ventured into) stepping or walking lunges. I have done stationary lunges. He is not only knowledgable but supportive of the BFL program and has looked at the supplements I take (CLA, Betagen and Kickstart) and has verified the benefits of taking all of these. Not that all trainers are that knowledgable because honestly if he did not support BFL, I would probably not use him. I base this opinion on doing BFL back in 1999 and 2001 successfully. Hope this helps you in considering this option. Take care.

After my lacklustre performace at HIIT on Tuesday, I started out on the crosstrainer this morning with the usual resistance setting of 5.  I increase my RPMs each minute for my intervals.

Then I remembered my pathetic attempt at cardio on Tuesday.  I also know that even though 5 kicks my butt, I have been doing level 5 for a few weeks now.

Getting mad at myself for allowing the cravings and all those negative feelings I pressed that button one more time and said "That's it - Level 6 for you today!!".

YEAAH BABY - got through the entire HIIT at a higher resitance level *phew*  But now I've done it - raised the bar -I'll have to keep doing level 6 until I'm ready for level 7 lol.

Well, I'm practicing them, but I'm not following the push up program any more. Egads, I didn't know how much stomach was involved in doing them. I think my tummy gives out before my arms do. The abs have always been my weakest spot.

Body for Life Forum Message by FrugalMissM (36 posts) at 03:50 PM:
Yep...you need strong ab and back muscles to keep yourself in a flat plane when you do full push-ups. That's why I like to "rest" in a plank position when I'm tired instead of dropping to my knees--it forces me to keep my abs tight and work them a bit while my arms recover. How are you doing on your push-ups?

Body for Life Forum Message by Emos (45 posts) at 04:51 PM:

Thread: For those who do extra cardio: (59 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by illini12 (31 posts) at 06:09 PM: For those who do extra cardio:
I was curious as to how you incorporate it into your BFL program. I want to do some extra cardio (not HIIT, just more to help lose fat, I need cardio to do it), but am not sure how to fit it in. I don't want to do it right after UBWO or LBWO because that would be a long time to work out and not be eating. I don't think it would be a good idea to do it after HIIT (or before it for that matter), but I don't know for sure on that one. I was thinking about doing an extra 45 minutes to an hour of cardio on days that I weight train by doing weights in the am on an empty stomach, and then waiting until later in the afternoon (eating on a normal schedule, of course) at least an hour after a meal and doing some low intensity cardio (I would eat an hour later then, so it would be at most 4 hours without a meal). Does that sound like a good plan? I am really just wondering how you all fit it in. Any feedback welcome! :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (900 posts) at 06:25 PM:
Thats what I do, weight days I do weights in the morning, and if I do extra cardio I go backa fter work and do 30-45 mins of normal cardio then.

Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (87 posts) at 06:44 PM:
I do my HIIT first on an empty tummy and if I'm super engertic, which i usually am when it comes to cardio I continue with low impact aerobics for 20 to 40 minutes and then do UB or LB wo, relax, hot tub , bath and then dive into my first meal which is usually 4 egg whites on dry toast , 8oz of V8 juice and coffee If i'm hungry before i work out, I'll drink coffee 1st, but I guess u can't go by me, cause I am one that just doesn't know when to quit. I love exercise, It's my hobbie. Too bad I don't have a body to show for that hobby, lol, But I'll get there again!

Body for Life Forum Message by beegee714 (98 posts) at 06:51 PM:
I do my extra cardio just how you described. I only do my 20 minute HIIT on those scheduled days because usually I can't do anymore. But on weight training days, I get up and do my regular workout and then 45 min to an hour of running later in the day. This is very low intensity, usually 5.0-5.5 mph.

Body for Life Forum Message by illini12 (31 posts) at 08:16 PM:
Cool, thanks for the input guys. I will definitely stick with the original plan then, which will work out the best for me anyway (I schedule lifting on days I have off from school so I have NO excuse to skip it, so I will also have extra time later to do cardio). :)

Yvonne, I think, having now talked to a couple of people, there was something weird going on with the chat rooms last night. Some folks weren't getting in, others were supposedly being redirected to other rooms. I finally got in just fine after a couple of tries throughout the night, but by the time I got on there, most everyone was in bed. (Except for KCsmomma and Godessa, who gave me an excuse to stay up another dang hour chatting). I think the parachat is a little buggy, but it's a great feature!

Body for Life Forum Message by Monica (103 posts) at 12:52 AM: Peed my pants...!
Really, I did.  I wonder if this has happened to anyone else.  I didn't feel like I had to pee but when I was doing lunges on the smith machine it just let loose!  Not a lake or anything, just a little, but it was enough for me to be very anxious to get home and shower.   I've never had that happen before and its not like I have a UTI or even had the urge to pee, it just happened.  I'm a little embrassed, thank God I was wearing net shorts because if they were cotton everyone would have noticed.  Am I some kind of freak here or has this happened to anyone else?  Sorry for the gross post....-Monica

Welcome to my world. The combinabion of morbid obesity and having 4 kids did a number on me, and my pelvic floor is shot. Strenuous exercise, especially when it involves impact or hard ab work (along with sneezing, coughing hard and laughing hard) often has that result with me. Hopefully this is just a one off for you, but I recommend you--er--prepare yourself just in case. I have a device that I got from my doctor that helps a little, but I always wear pads at the gym. I've been told that as the weight comes off things may improve a little, but I'm still waiting. Probably surgery in my future. And Depends. :P Let this be a lesson to all you ladies! Take off the weight before you get pregnant, and get a competent OB!!

I have registered for the actual challenge and I was wondering which pictures I should include in the pack? I intend on doing another 1 or 2 challenges after this one. Do people put in the very first before pics and then maybe the after pics of their 2nd or 3rd challenge? Or can you only enter your before and after pics of any one challenge?? I'm confused! :)

Body for Life Forum Message by beegee714 (98 posts) at 06:44 AM:
You can enter the challenge more than once. So you can send in a packet for all three of your challenges. But only use before and after pictures from each challenge, otherwise it wouldn't be fair.

I am in my third challenge and I sent in my original pictures which were taken on the day I started and ended. I then used my first ‘After’ picture to be my second challenge’s ‘Before’ picture. I figured that this provided an accurate pictorial of my progress. For my third challenge, however, there was a slight time lapse (about a month) so I took my ‘Before’ the day I started.

I think the "official" rules are that your before pic is taken within 3 days of your start date, and then the same time frame for your after pic.

Thread: WHY WHY WHY?? (157 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Gymbunny (52 posts) at 06:21 AM: WHY WHY WHY??
I am having a horrible time...I am craving everything!! Unfortunately I'm not made of the same stuff that Tai is and I haven't been able to resist mine. This is the first time I have really "cheated" outside of cheat day. Last night I had a BIG bowl of cereal, 2 Jaffa cakes (not sure if you guys get them..they are little round pieces of cakey stuff with a little orangey bit in the middle and covered in chocolate) and now I've gulped down 1/2 a bottle of fizzy juice!! I know it's not the pig out of the year but I'm feeling pretty crappy now, I might as well have had a feast! How can I snap myself out of this??! Help me before I really go for it!! :O

Body for Life Forum Message by kcsmomma (76 posts) at 07:02 AM:
Hey...slow down. You are looking fantastic. Maybe you are not eating enough protein to fill you? Are you eating whole foods and not relying on bars too much? Try to eat something during the day that has more fiber...veggies maybe? I'm just brainstorming here. I'm in my 7th week and noticed you are in the 6th. I struggled at 6 weeks, but I was going to start and didn't know it. (Wasn't paying attention. Too absorbed in these boards:)) Let yourself off about the "cheat" meal. This is for life and sometimes it happens to all of us! Don't feel guilty...I'm sure there are others who are feeling the same way today. *raises her hand*...I had a buffalo burger with a few fries yesterday. Very unplanned and a total cave!! Hang in there! You're doing great!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Knox (9 posts) at 07:05 AM:
Gymbunny, Don't worry- periodic cravings are natural. Every once in a while you're going to miss a workout, and every once in a while you're going to pig out on fizzy juice and Jaffa cakes. You're habituating yourself to a new lifestyle, and it's hard to do it flat out. The important thing is that your mental compass is set in the right direction so when you do get a little off track, you can adjust and jump right back on. A an extra meal of cereal with some Jaffa cakes and fizzy juice every now and then isn't going to derail your program.

Please read as though I am speaking through a bull horn: Okay, you in the kitchen… This is the BFL police. We have the kitchen completely surrounded… Put the bowl DOWN! We’ll give you two Myoplex shakes and a Myoplex Lite Chocolate Crisp for the cereal and Jaffa cakes. You have no way out! So, put the cereal and cakes down and come out with your gym clothes on! We have a package of Kick Start waiting for you. Come on out! :)

TJ..that was very funny!! I'm actually going to try that next time..I'll my bf a bullhorn and give him the go ahead to do his Sargeant Major impression on me!! I suppose in the long term it's not the end of the world and I should really learn to expect the cravings...it just takes someone else telling you that to realise though!! Thank you! Tai - Jaffa cakes are brilliant..I'm not going to go there just now though...yummy! KCS - I don't tend to eat the bars as I think all the good ones are confined to America!! I think I'm eating plenty through the day, I suspect it's my pre-BFL greed rearing it's head!! I've checked out your profile and although there are no pics your inches are certainly going the right way!! KNOX - thank you for your advice too, just as valuable as KCS. You're right when you say that these little knocks are going to happen and that they won't derail the whole programme. Thank you for changing my frame of mind about the cheating...I can almost feel the guilt trickling away! :)

Body for Life Forum Message by JohnA (278 posts) at 07:41 AM:
LOL TJ, that's a good one. Gymbunny, I’ve been reading your previous posts and it seems like the cravings for sweets is a weekly pattern. Refined sugars are not only bad for the teeth, but they also promote high levels of triglycerides that clog the arteries. These kinds of cravings can be an indicator of low serotonin levels in the brain. You are a thin person and probably you eat quiet below expenditure. Your body signals you that it needs more energy and would not shed the fat that is stored – that can explains the other problem you post about. So, the quick remedy that I can see is a second re-feed day. Have a big bowl (4! fist size) of pasta for lunch 3 days after your freeday. That should accomplish two things: 1. Raise the levels of serotonin and curb the sweets cravings. 2. Fill up some of the fat stores, so the Leptin hormone levels rise. That would signal the brain that the fat stores are being replenished regularly and the body can safely use up stored fat for energy during the rest of week. Please let me know if this makes sense.

Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (144 posts) at 07:46 AM:
Remember sugar is addictive. If you're eating a bunch of it on free day, you're feeding the addiction and will likely suffer for it the rest of the week. Or it could just be the phase of the moon.

Body for Life Forum Message by Gymbunny (52 posts) at 07:51 AM:
JOHNA - thank you for your advice...you're right, I feel like since I posted my last pics all I have done is craved sweets. You're advice does make sense and I will definitely try it out. I must say again though, I do feel as though I eat plenty and I thought it might just be the greediness in me that's craving more food! Thanks again and I'll let you know how I get on. Y :)

Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (133 posts) at 08:39 AM:
Gymbunny, I don't know if this will help in addition to everyone else's suggestions. I'm in my 6th week also and have been SOOO good - not one unauthorized food the whole time except free day. Soo... this Monday I was at the store, and all of the sudden WHAM!!! I was dying. I wanted Ben & Jerry's Heath Bar Coffee Ice Cream, Snickerdoodle cookies, Chocolate fudge cake with fudge icing, reese's peanut butter cups, you name it!!! So I started thinking about what I COULD have and why I was craving. Mine was a physical craving, but mostly with a mental component. So.. seeing as ice cream was a big crave, I went and found some fat-free, sugar free popsicles that are 20 cals per popsicle. They had a creamy filling resembling ice cream "enough" that after three of them with my protein portion and some fruit, I actually felt "guilty" and like I had cheated. BUT I learned that I can do with substitutes as long as they are sufficiently evil tasting. This week, I discovered the cottage cheese oatmeal pancakes that were discussed on this board a few days ago. For me, they are a huge satiation for sugar and carb cravings. If you haven't tried them, you should - they're awesome. Between the vanilla and the sweetener, it even satisfies my craving for cake!!

Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (53 posts) at 09:55 AM:
I am glad we don't get those Jaffa cakes. I don't know if I could resist that one : ) Just pick up and move on. We all have setbacks no matter what they are. So forgiving yourself and moving on is the bestthing you can do. And don't beat yourself up for it! It's how we recover that makes us truly great. What is up with this 6th week? Thank God for the EFL cookbook! I too am in my 6th week and had a few little cravings. But I just made some recipes out of there that have helped me along w/out a cheat.

Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (87 posts) at 08:04 AM: how many lb wts to you actually lift
I have worked out all my life, but aerobics is my strong point, I am a little weeking when it comes to wts. I do my chest press with 10 lb dumbells, I tried 15 lbs and can only do 6 and that is pushing it. I am fine on the lower body, I can do up to 50 lbs on leg ext. how am i going to tone up when i can hardly lift anything. bicep curls 10 lbs and if I use a barbell, 8 lbs. and the butterfly, can't go passed 20 lbs. But get me doing aerobics and I can out do any 16 year old! any suggestions? are just keep trying, I promise I been trying!

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (326 posts) at 08:07 AM:
Yeah, keep trying. It takes some time for your body to build up strength, and you'll find that, before long, you will find your current weights too easy and you'll know you're ready to move up. I started where you are with upper body, too. It'll come, just give it time! Jess

Body for Life Forum Message by Robyn (23 posts) at 08:08 AM:
dont worry fostermamasmith Im a weakling too when it comes to weights hehe you just keep pushing your 10's with the weights you are able to and you will build your strength up in no time at all ;o)

Body for Life Forum Message by markharrill (69 posts) at 08:23 AM:
Keep after it! Doing all the sets will help you build your strength. I found that while my triceps and chest were strong at the start, my biceps and shoulders need a lot of work. I feel wimpy starting curls with relatively light weights, but I do all my sets and don't break form. Each week so far I am adding 5-10lbs from week to week.

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (900 posts) at 09:29 AM:
You'll get there! When I first started working with weights, I was around the same as you (this was a few years ago now though). I found in order to goup in weights, sometimes I had to rethink what I was doing for my exercises. Example, I could NOT get above 2 x 20 lb dumbells for my bench press. No way no how. It was really frustrating. And there were no 22 lb weights available. So instead - I went to a barbell for presses - I was able to put 45 lbs on it. I could do that, then once I built up on that, I was able to do 50 - now I can easily do 2 x 25 lb dumbells, heck I hit a new high of 66 lbs this week! Different exercises also target the muscles in different ways as well. Just remember there are other ways of progressing up rather than just increasing the weight on the exercise you do now.

Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (87 posts) at 09:59 AM:
yes, I know Tai, Thanks, I been doing 25, 20, 15, then my 12,10, 8, 6, 25 on a few to try and get a little extra in hope that is ok Oh yea, and on my ab work, I am finially feeling it ! When i first started almost 6 weeks ago a little weight was a lot. NOw I can bench 2x25lb dumbells. My reverse grip pull downs for my back i am now up to 70bs. OMG, in the beginning 5 lbs had my triceps quiveringbig time. Now I can do 15 lbs. I am so amazed how quickly my body is adjusting. I continue to push myself. I have the same problem with going up in 5b increments, but i find it helps getting a spotter, even if they just help with one finger, it makes all the difference. Keep working to your 10's, you will be amazed. I so am.

Thread: exercise on empty stomach (105 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by mail4tammy (2 posts) at 08:21 AM: exercise on empty stomach
Just wanting to know if everyone here does this on an empty stomach like the program says you should do. Also, does everyone follow the 20 minute routine or do you do more than that. For instance i love to walk and ride bikes, do you think adding more cardio can hinder my results?

Body for Life Forum Message by markharrill (69 posts) at 08:26 AM:
I definitely do the cardio first thing in the morning on empty stomach. Can't say I care for it, but have been consistent. :-) I do weights at night, but I have a snack no less than 3 hours before I hit the gym. Extra cardio probably would not hurt, but I expect you may need more calories when you do that. I am still very confused about the calories.

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (326 posts) at 08:30 AM:
I wouldn't do the extra cardio at the same time as the HIIT, if you're going to do it. The general rule of thumb, as I understand it, is that you should never do HIIT more often than 3 times a week, but other lower intensity cardio is ok. But if you can do that extra cardio right after finishing HIIT, you probably weren't hitting your 10 on the HIIT.

I generally do my workouts first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, but some days I end up saving cardio for my lunch break.

Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (144 posts) at 08:52 AM:
I do it occasionally, but not usually. And I find if I wait an hour after I exercise to eat I am hungry ALL DAY, so I make sure to have a meal within half an hour. Maybe I'm losing fat more slowly this way, but I'm keeping my sanity.

Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (53 posts) at 08:53 AM:
I do extra cardio when my body craves it. But I never exceed 45 min. I will do a run, bike, and ellipticle broken up. Someimes end with a 5 min increasing sprint. And I make sure I always save the best for last that would be for my 10. I try to do it on an empty stomach I get much beter performance that way but is not always possible with a 18 mo. old in the house. : )

Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (133 posts) at 09:00 AM:
I am doing cardio in the AM and empty. I'm also doing quite a bit of extra cardio. I do HIIT, empty stomach, followed by an extra 25-40 minutes of very easy effort in the AM on non-lifting days. On lifting days, I do 45+ minutes, empty stomach in the AM, and then a warm up session in the PM before I lift. I've lost 18lbs of fat and gained 4lbs of muscle in the first 5 weeks (but I do have a LOT of fat to lose), so it seems to be working well for me. Another "BUT" - I was some years back a pretty strong athlete, and genetically, I pack on muscle by doing barely more then breathing. AND I am heavily supplementing to accelerate recovery for the next workout. And I work from home 3 days a week where I can put my feet up and rest physically while I work....

Body for Life Forum Message by popeye (13 posts) at 09:05 AM:
I do the 20hiit, then tack on a 10 minute moderate cooldown period to the end. As far as calories go I alternate 1800 one week 1900-2000 the next, just so my body does not catch on. I would not add more calories just because of adding a few extra cardio sessions. After all deficit is what causes you to lose weight, and it's 3500 kcal to a pound so keep that in mind if you do add a few...

I follow the program exactly like it is. I do 20 minutes of cardio and no more...by the time I get done with my cardio workout, I'm pooped and don't want to do anymore. I make sure that I hit my 10's! For me, it's easier to hit my 10 with cardio then with weights....hitting my 10's with weights is like hitting a home run, it don't happen often for me as I would need a spotter and I don't have one yet...I'm still a bit too shy to ask someone at the gym to "spot" me *LOL*...if I ask a guy, he might take it the wrong way...I've come accross a few that just seem to smile too much and too long for my own comfort *LOL*. Anyway, I follow the program exactly like it is....however, I have heard that additional cardio sometimes helps...but I haven't gotten to that point yet... Cardio, to be honest, is my weakness.... I'm very strong with weights but not so much in Cardio.... the only true cardio workout that I really "trully" enjoyed was when I was a spinning instructor, it was intense and required much leg muscle strength on my part... LOVED IT!

I'm actually not doing HIIT. I do try to exercise on an empty stomach though and eat within 45 minutes after. I ride the lifecycle or walk on the treadmill for 30-40 minutes,3 or 4 times per week, do some stretches everyday and try to get in at least 1 circuit of weight training per week. I haven't excercised in 42 years and doing hiit scares me a little bit. Personally I don't think that easing into things is a bad approach for beginners.

Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (87 posts) at 10:17 AM:
I workout on an empty tummy, it growls at me thru the whole thing, lol I am so used to the traditional aerobics, warm up, start low and go higher and higher and stay there for 20 min and then slowly come back dow, I am not sure if i am hiting my 10;s are not, don't really understand that concept, seems I would be in cardio zone and not the fat burning zone i want to be in. But, I warm up then get into my high intensity, HR is about 85% stay there and last 5 min I climb up to 90% and max out. I figure that is my 10. Then I continue low for 5 more min and HR rapidly goes back done to 60%, by then I have my 2nd wind and I can do low to med high intensity for another hr or more. When I taught aerobics my students would say, don't you ever get tired? But do the wt session after cardio and I am to pooped to pop!

Thread: Had a weird dream last night (71 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (326 posts) at 08:27 AM: Had a weird dream last night
OK, either the flu is not as out of my system as I thought it was, or the two days without workouts are REALLY weighing (ha) on my mind. This is the dream I had last night:

I was spending Thanksgiving at my father's house (my father actually died in 1999), and it was this big, gorgeous house I'd never seen before.  And I knew my dad had some workout equipment in the house somewhere, a treadmill, a recumbent bike and an elliptical.  I wanted to get in a HIIT workout before the big meal but I couldn't find the room where the equipment was, and I was so excited to finally get back on an elliptical trainer, because I haven't been on one in ages and really want to buy one for my house.  Anyway, I had to go find my dad and ask him where the stuff was, and he got all excited that I was going to work out, and he led me down the hall to the "red carpet room" and the elliptical was there, but not set up yet, and my dad (who has been blind since I was 12) started putting it together and talking very excitedly about how great it was going to be. But I was getting stressed because my brother and sister kept interrupting and I thought I wasn't going to get my workout in before Thanksgiving dinner.

OK, so either I am so consumed with guilt over not working out that I am having exercise dreams, lol, or my dad is sending me a message that he's excited about me working out, or I need more sleep-inducing drugs. LOL

When I was getting married, My daddy died 6 months before and i couldn't find the wedding dress i wanted, and i dreamed that he was at my wedding dancing with me and I asked him where did i get this dress and he told me the name of the store he worked at 40 years before, I went there and there it was only one size 10 exactly like the one in the dream. Interesting, but they do come back in strange ways, I really believe that

Thread: Attitude Adjustment or Too Lofty Expectations? (167 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by TJ (114 posts) at 09:09 AM: Attitude Adjustment or Too Lofty Expectations?
I hope that I don’t appear to be whining (which I probably am) but I am getting a wee bit frustrated with my progress in my third challenge. Don’t get me wrong, I am extremely happy with the transformation made to this point, but this challenge appears to be getting the better of me. I have been eating right and only ‘enjoyed’ about three days. Free days have become just another day for me. That’s a good habit formed from the prior 32 weeks. I have also been religious in my workouts. To this point I’ve lost a whopping 8 pounds (that’s one per week, yip, yip, yippee) and about 3% body fat. Additionally, my waistline is remaining the same size and that is the most disappointing and frustrating result of this challenge. I can see that I am beginning to gain some muscle tone, especially in the arms and shoulders. Due to my knee replacement recovery, I’ve only been able to do any lower body lifting for the last couple weeks so I don’t expect to see any major changes in leg muscle tone. I know muscle weighs more than fat, but I am struggling with the logic associated with the changes. I also know that the weight comes off slower as one approaches their ‘ideal’ weight. But one goal was to lose another two more inches off my gut and that goal currently appears to be too far on the horizon to accomplish. So, am I doing something wrong or do I just need an ‘attitude adjustment’… AKA swift kick in the butt! I know it’s called ‘Body for Life’ for a reason. Maybe I expected too much from this challenge.

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (900 posts) at 09:22 AM:
*kicks TJ in the butt* You just said yourself you know that weight comes off slower as you get towards your goals. I think you answered your own question. If you are still losing 1 lb a week at this stage - you are doing REALLY well. The last remenants of stomach fat are always the last to go - and you know that you have to get below a certain bf% before you can see any abs. I know it can be discouraging sometimes so smack yourself in the rear for me and just keep up your great work. You're an inspiration for everyone on here - that should be obvious by the fact you are number ONE in the top 20 for this month :D *go TJ go! go TJ go!*

TJ, Keep it up. Your transformation has been very impressive. In fact, I was sending a link of your profile to a friend of mine. He lost about what you have on Atkins. Of course he has been stuck for about 18 months and can't lose. Trying to convert him to BFL.

patince grasshopper ... :) You'll get there TJ ! I'm in the same boat, as I think alot of guys are when their bf% in the teens, most of what is left is stuck around our mid-sections. I'm convinved I have to be close to perfect with the diet to continue shedding it, and it will take some time. Keep your eye on the prize man !! I have no doubt we'll get there !! Jim

TJ you are doing so awesome. Hang in there. Patience is one of the hardest things for us to maintain. But it does pay off. I think you should go back and look at your B4 pictures and then take a look at your current pictures and see how far you have come. You are still consistently dropping weight too so thats a sign that all is well. Hang in there my friend. :)

TJ, First of all, I would KILL to be where you are now! I am 340 pounds, and I SO respect what you've been able to accomplish. That said, you have to keep in mind that you are really sending out shock waves throughout your body! Now that you weigh so much less, your body is desperately trying to stop what it sees as an alarming loss of body mass. Every system in our body is geared toward avoiding this, and you are ACTIVELY CAUSING it! Now that you have less fat to lose, the body is fighting even harder to preserve those diminishing resources. It's going to make you work for those last few pounds and force you to attack it in different ways. Change your workout routine, watch what type of calories you are eating, and make sure that you have adjusted to your new HIIT levels. While your body will not like giving up those last stores of fat it has squirreled away, it can't hold out against a prolonged siege! Keep on the attack, and good luck, Rob

T.J., I know it's hard to feel stuck. I kind of feel that way myself and have been reluctant to weigh and measure because of it. But, no matter what, I look at myself and KNOW that I am so much happier with the way I look now than the way I looked before. I am in the best shape I've been in throughout my entire adult life. Even at 105 lbs., I couldn't have run 1.7 (new personal best for me) miles in 20 minutes. Even if you aren't where you want to be just yet, you are sooooo much better off than you were when you started. Try to keep that in mind!! You are doing great and I know you won't quit till you get it!

Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (144 posts) at 02:35 PM:
TJ, you are doing absolutely fantastic. About that waist measurement: You have lost over 100 lbs, and some of those extra inches are skin, not gut per se. It will get smaller, but it's going to happen slowly. This is not like the average guy starting out with your current height/weight/body fat content. I'm having the same frustration, by the way, but my problem is compounded by stretch marks from pregnancy. Your skin should eventually shrink up more, and you *may* eventually lose the pooch completely. Eve

TJ - First of all, you have made awesome progress. When speaking with my trainer about the weight dropping, he told me I would have no problem dropping the first 40 lbs because my body would not consider it "essential." He said after that, it certainly becomes more difficult and you may need to tweak what you are doing, especially when your bodyfat starts to get much lower. According to your profile, your bodyfat is at 16% and therefore you will need to realize at this stage, you will not lose it as fast as you did initially when you had a much higher bodyfat percentage. Also, check your diet - what are you doing with essential fats?

Thanks for the encouragement and kicks! That pop you heard was me pulling my head out of my backside! Sorry, but I was truly frustrated this morning. I had been stuck on the same weight since 1/14 and there’s been no change in waist size… and we are expecting 8 more inches of snow. I realize that I have come a long way but I was struggling with the logic of BFL this morning. It’s Body for LIFE… not Body for 4 or 6 weeks. So, thanks for the words and I promise not to whine again during this challenge!

This is an article discussing how to get rid of those last stubborn pounds by Shawna from http://dancingblonde.tripod.com/id7.html =========== How Do I Nail My Challenge? That last 10 pounds or last 5% that just really doesn't seem to want to leave... This topic is all about that last challenge to get to YOUR ultimate body. How do you make sure that it does it? Read on!!! Reminders: - The closer you are to your "optimum" weight / body fat, the harder it will be to get down to that point. :-) Don't let your brain tell you that you are a failure - if it seems hard, it's because it IS! - "In order to loose weight, it's a simple calculation. You must burn more calories than you intake." HOWEVER - this can be misleading. Not all calories are created equal. - We all already know that the "secret" to weight loss is cardio + weight training + nutrition. Most of us think we have a pretty good handle on it, but the more I grip it, the more I learn. - Static is bad. This is true for nutrition, cardio type and weight lifting. In every sense of the term, static really is bad. I'll quote the truism and explore it in each of the sections below - the only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth. :-) - Nature knows more about what we should be eating than man or scientist. :-) Tips / Tricks / Things: This is my list of things I did in C3 that made for an ~ 8% body fat loss… and I -KNOW- I could have done better if I'd been more focused. :-) Nutrition: - No bars or RTDs unless you have NO OTHER choice. Whole foods are best for you, because they require more work from your body - got to love the thermogenic effect. - Refeeding - If your target food zone is ~1400-1600 calories a day, go up to 2200 for one day and down to 1200 the next. I find I eat more on HIIT days, so those are the days I cycle to the higher calories. Make sure you do this within reason. In my example, we want the average to be that 1500 calorie mark. - Find new foods - make sure you aren't in a rut with your food - one of the benefits of the refeeding thing where you are cycling your calories is that some things that aren't in your food range if you're on 1500 calories ARE in it on the higher days. Take advantage of that. It makes it easier to stick with eating clean and you get a variety of tastes, nutrients and vitamins / minerals. - No - and I do mean NO - alcohol for the duration of the challenge. It can screw you up to badly. If you REALLY have to have it for some reason, it's ok; but it will hork your calories for that week and potentially set you back more than it's worth. This is NOT forever. Once you get to the place you want to sustain, you'll be able to add that back in, but while you need a caloric defecit this is an easy and logical place to cut. - Nix or severely restrict free days. I stopped having much of a free day. I have two free meals. Usually within the same 24 hour period. I found that it really cut down on cravings AND means that you don't have to work as hard to make sure you've got the caloric defecit over the course of the week. This is NOT forever. Once you get to the place you want to sustain, you'll be able to add that back in, but while you need a caloric defecit this is an easy and logical place to cut. - Vegetables and Fruit are your friends. Make sure that most of your carbohydrates come from fruit and veg - preferably things like berries, peaches and apples. Try to limit crackers and bread type products in your meals - they sneak sodium in there that you probably don't need. - Fiber, fiber, fiber. And GOOD oils. Make sure you are getting loads of fiber (if you're eating loads of vegetables, you've prolly got this covered.) Flax seed oil is your friend. It's a good oil that helps cut down on cravings and makes sure you've got what you need to break down all that happy healthy food. - Biggest meals first. The later in the day you are (as in closer to bed time, whenever that is for you) the lighter your meals should be. Try for low GI foods like cottage cheese right before bed. It's enough to keep you full; but not enough to weigh you down. HIIT: - Rock the body - and rock it HARD! If you think you could keep going - even for 30 more seconds - when you are at the end of the last minute of your cardio, you didn't push it hard enough. There's all kinds of scientific proof that that minute of super intensity is what REALLY ratchets up your metabolism. - Cross-train!!! If running/cycling/biking is killing you, DON'T DO THAT! Get on a treadmill, bike or an elliptical and kick some booty some new way!!!! Make sure that you don't court injury - switch things up, and LISTEN to your body. - Some days, break the habit! One of my habits was that my 10 on the treadmill was a slightly higher incline from the rest of my workout, at 8.5 MPH. Last Sunday I DOUBLED my incline and still went 8.5 MPH. I never thought I could have done it, but I did, and I felt FABULOUS once I cooled down (not to mention super proud of myself for even attempting, let alone completing it) - Find something you can do with a group - it will make you push yourself WAY harder than you can alone. Maybe that's a trainer, or a spinning class, or just a group of friends to go out with. Even if it's only one day a week that you do this, you'll find that it can be extra motivation to dig that little bit harder into your reserves during other training. Weight Training: - Slow and steady AND fast and furious. :-) This is another area that switching it up REALLY pays off. Not just switching up your fitness routine every 4 - 6 weeks, but little meso cycles INSIDE your 4- 6 week routine. Maybe use slow for intensity one week (just because you're sick of the routine). Maybe do one day of totally "random" (but pre-planned) routine that isn't what you'll do the rest of the 4-6 week interval - I like to test run the next routine I have planned, so I know if it needs work; AND I get the benefit of changing things up. - Form IS function. Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate. Make sure you can SEE that muscle getting worked, and you KNOW your form is perfect. The better your form, the more concentrated the exercise is on that muscle. That's a GOOD thing for muscle gain. :-) - Long term weight lifting goals - for instance, I want to do an unassisted pull up. That means I have certain muscles I KNOW need to get stronger to accomplish that goal. I can (and do) design my work outs around those muscles and the types of things that make my goal more possible. (For this challenge I was push up girl. I found something like 15 different ways to do push ups. *g*) - Another place the buddy system is your friend. Same as in HIIT - it will make you push yourself WAY harder than you can alone. Maybe that's a trainer, or a spinning class, or just a group of friends to go out with. Even if it's only one day a week that you do this, you'll find that it can be extra motivation to dig that little bit harder into your reserves during other training. - Don't cheat yourself. If you feel like butt and don't want to go, make sure you know why, and how you'll make that time up, but then LET IT GO! If you HATE the idea of going that day, even as you stand in the gym door, or do your first rep, chances are you need to back it off and either do about 50% that day, or don't do it at all, and use that as a free exercise day. Overtraining will make you WAY more likely to LEAP off the wagon for both exercise and food. References:

I've read several times that it's helpful to envision what you want to look like to help acheive your goals

How hard is that to do when you've been big all your life?

I can't envision what a thin me would look like. Maybe like Mel Gibson, Elmer Fudd or Frank Perdue?

Will I still be bald and fat when I'm slim?

Anyone else having success with this?

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (900 posts) at 09:19 AM:
A lot of people are fat skinny people when they lose weight - that is because they don't lose weight correctly (i.e. strength training etc). If you have a hard time imagining what you will look like when you lose weight, try and find some pictures of what you WANT to look like when you lose weight. Scour web sites and find pictures of guys you think look good. Use others as your inspiration until you are able to find it within yourself :)

So, this doesn't have anything to do with BFL, but I'm just posting because I'm sad and my husband doesn't understand. We have a German Shepherd that's a little over a year old. We've had her since she was 7 weeks old and her name is Sadie. I love her very much, but I have to give her away. We live in the country and our fence isn't a chain link fence or a picket fence, it's a box wire fence. Well, we've lived here since last June and we've had to repair the fence in 4 different places 4 different times. Well, now she's able to just jump the fence. There's even barb wire at the top and she still clears it. I tried using a steel cable tie out thing and the other day she somehow got the hook unhooked and got out of the fence again. I moved it to a different part of the yard and then this morning, she actually broke her collar and got out again. She's gotten out of the yard no less than 5 times in the last week and a half. The bad thing is that when she gets out, she won't come to me, because she knows she has to be confined again. So, I'm kind of at the end of the road as to what I can do with her. We can't replace the fence because we don't have the money and she can't keep getting out because it's a danger to her and other people-she could get hit by a car or cause an accident, or somebody could shoot her if she comes in their yard. I just don't know what to do. So, for her own safety, I have to give her to someone who has a "real" fence. I'm sooo upset and have been a crying mess all morning. My husband doesn't even care about her because he just thinks she's a nuisance and an extra expense. But I love her. He's sorry that I'm upset, but he doesn't care about Sadie being gone. Well, at least I'm not at all tempted to dive into the comfort food. My stomach is just in knots. I feel like I'd feel if she died or something. I guess it is kind of like that, because I won't get to see her again once she's gone. I'm just really sad and needed to talk to people that I know will understand. Thanks for listening. Sincerely Mequet

Oh, no. Are you sure that you have thought of all options? What about a kennel? Try contacting some of your local shelters or pet stores. If you tell them your situation they might be able to sell you a used one cheap. Or watch the paper. There has to be other options that you can consider before giving her away. I completely understand why you are sad. Pets are a family member...they become a part of our life. I'm sorry that you are sad and I hope that you find an option that allows you to keep Sadie with your family.

Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (635 posts) at 10:26 AM:
I can't put her in a kennel. She'd be miserable, you know? I'd rather me be sad, than have her confined to a little space for the rest of her life. She needs a lot of room-she's a big dog and she can't be cooped up like that. I couldn't do that to her, so that's why this is my only option at this point. Trust me, I've tried to think of everything.

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (900 posts) at 10:33 AM:
Instead of one thing tying her up, have you tried a runner? Basically, a really strong wire running across the yard. then you put a ring through the wire and tie her to that ring. She gets the run of the entire yard, and might not be as inclined to pull and try to escape. You just have to make sure its really secure. Also, instead of a normal collar - just for when shes tied up have you tried a choker chain. They arent the greatest things - but if the dog pulls on it, it just gets tighter rather than being able to slip off or be snapped. Then as soon as they stop pulling it loosens again. It would be good for training her also.

I am so sorry Mequet! Only other animal lovers can understand the pain you are going through. Does Sadie spend most of her time outdoors? I was just thinking that part of her trouble sounds like training. Are there any vets or trainers in your area that can provide any suggestions or help? Have you checked with your local harware stores and free ads in newspapers for slightly damaged or used fencing (it doesn't all have to match for now!)? I can understand how you feel about not wanting to pen her up in a kennel, but if you can see a time somewhere in the near future that you will be able to buy some fencing, a kennel might not be such a bad idea. Last year in January, my sister-in-law told my husband and I about an 8 month old boxer pup that had a very unhappy home and the owners just didn't want her anymore. We lived in a two-bedroom townhome with one other (small) dog and two cats at the time. We really didn't need another dog, especially a boxer who would get bigger and need a yard to run in. But we also are true animal lovers at heart and decided that if the littel boxer needed someone to love her, we would do it. A year later, we have a bigger house and will have a fenced in yard once spring comes and we can dig our footings. Tanner, our boxer, probably wasn't thrilled with not having a yard to run in, but she knew how much she was loved and somehow managed to tolerate the whole thing. Our pets care about us as much as we care about them and what is important to them is to see you, love you and be touched by you. You'd be amazed what they can put up with for the time being in order to be with the one they love! But if it does come down to it and you MUST find her a new home, please seek out a no-kill animal shelter. I'm sure she will find a wonderful home. But explore all the avenues available to you first. Good luck and my thoughts are with you! Rene'

Now we have a house dog. But can you try to set up just 1 strain of electric fence, it's not too expensive or I will be glad to lend you my shock collar, I had it for my warmiamaner that died at 10 years old. and it worked great on her. or is there anyway your hubby would let her come inside? Hope it works out for u, I;m sorry!

There have been times when she was mostly an inside dog, but if I even let her out to go to the bathroom, she'd get out the fence. Just like the other day-she was in all night and I let her out to go to the bathroom, and she jumped the fence. How does the shock collar work?

Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (189 posts) at 11:08 AM:
We have the "invisible fence" for our dogs, an undergound cable that lines our property and sends out an audible signal that they are getting near the line, then a low-shock if they get too close. They find out pretty quickly where the line is, and so they never really got shocked. I put the collar on my neck first and walked through it to make sure it was humane, asked a bunch of vets and dog trainers, etc. who all said it was fine. I would agree that this is more of a training issue than a fence issue, because she needs to respond to your call. Before you give her away, I would contact a local trainer; for a few bucks, you might be able to keep her! Good luck, I feel so bad for you right now!! Rob

Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (635 posts) at 11:14 AM:
Hmm, I don't know if you guys are understanding what I mean by "tight" budget. See, we usually have just enough to cover basics. At the moment, I'm contemplating how I'm going to scrape up the 8-10 bucks it'll cost to get her a new collar. We have 10 dollars in our checking acct. and my husband doesn't get paid again till next Thursday-that kind of "tight" is what I mean by tight budget. We have groceries and stuff, but we just don't have money for a trainer or an invisible fence thing-it's not an option right now.

NEVER EVER EVER PUT A DOG ON A CHOKER CHAIN UNLESS YOU ARE ATTACHED TO THE OTHER END OF IT!!!! EVER!!! DO NOT DO THIS!!!! Tai, and everybody else, I'm sorry, but I have to say this, and I wanted to make a very emphatic point of it. I work with a dog rescue (volunteer), have a lot of experience with dogs, and I have seen the effects of what can happen if you leave a dog unsupervised on a choker. If they get hung up, they can die a very very excruciating, slow, frightening death. Mequet, do you work outside the home? If you do not, is it possible for you to keep Sadie inside with you? A lot of dogs run off, get into mischief, and are generally unruly because of lack of training and exercise. Shasta, my lab who passed away in June from kidney disease, about tore me apart when she was Sadie's age because she was an escape artist as well. The suggestion Tai made about the runner line is very good. If you use it, it would be better to double the sliding line, wind them around each other to make one larger line with 2 ends, and attach one line end to Sadie's collar and the other line's end to a harness that fits her snugly. Also, if you use this solution, make sure of a couple of things: 1. You buy the right kind of runner line - with a steel cable core coated in rubber. Lesser lines can be easily chewed through. (can be found at petco, petsmart, etc) 2. Make sure you take the end of the line and walk with it in your hand at Sadie's neck/harness level. Make SURE she cannot get hung up on anything. 3. Attach the main runner with each end to a tree, your house, or other VERY secure anchors that will not move or fall over, just above the head hight of the tallest person in your family. If you don't, someone can hang themselves in the dark. Other possible solutions: Chain link fencing is not extremely expensive if you only put it around a dog run - say 8-10ft wide by 20-24ft long. (maybe $100 give or take) Use minimum 48" chain link, with a secure gate and posts maximum every 8 feet. 6' chain link is best. (german shepherds are typically intelligent and good at climbing fences) This would require a good bit of work to put up, but would be cheaper than the 10'x10' pens that are sold at Lowe's or Home Depot for around $250-400. (You might be able to get credit at the store and pay $10-20/month until it's paid off) Also, as these habits can also be formed by lack of exercise and excess energy, you could try taking her for very long (several miles), very fast walks. Twice a day would be good... Sadie is a dog who was bred to work. She needs a job... If she doesn't have one, she will act out just like a bored child (which is what she is, just with 4 legs instead of 2). If you do decide you cannot keep her and do not have the time for proper training and exercise, please do a web search for MS based German Shepherd Rescues. I guarantee there will be one. Call them. They will have better luck finding her a good home that understands the needs of an energetic young working dog. Please, please please if you cannot keep her, take the time to find her a good home. Dogs are not posessions - they are beings who love and worship us unconditionally. She deserves a good home with people who love her. If it can't be with you, PLEASE take the time to check out the people she ends up with...

Great advice rawillow. I have been feeling "at wits end" with the new choc lab puppy we just got but I know its a phase. Training is the key but we dont always have the time due to both of us working. I would suggest try working with sadie as much as you can until you can get the runner line.

How about heading down to your local public library and borrowing some books on dog training :D That's free! Won't cost you anything even if you sit at the library and read them there. They might have some great tips on how you can help train puppy to start behaving more like a puppy should ;)

Try the invisible fence!!! It gives her so much freedom and you know that the boundaries are set. It is really effective. Maybe she can be an inside dog until you can afford this option...and take her out on a leash. I will tell you they really adapt to any lifestyle...and big dogs can go a long time without going to the bathroom...esp if it is temporary. We have two big dogs...90+ lbs...and they are inside all day and we walk them morning and night. (Great way to add in a little exercise too) and believe me they are just fine. They would rather be inside with me half the time. Good luck...I cannot imagine having to give up my dogs. Wow...you are stressed. Hang in there!!

EJ - my bfs parents have a chocolate lab - and they are THE worst naughty destructive cute lil things as puppies that were ever invented.

Their dog finally got past that phase when he hit 3 years.

Good luck with him lol!

Also - just a thought, a lot of puppy training/dog care books suggest locking the puppy up while unattended in a kennel. I know it seems cruel, but it is recommended and helps with their training. With our dog, it was recommended that e'd be in his box while unattended until he was over 2 years old. He's 2 and a half now, and we are JUST starting to let him loose in the house while we are not there. It might seem nasty locking him up - but it is a good pat of their training. just make sure you give them lots of love, attention and long walks when you are able. And remember, it's not for life.

Yah - Tai - as much as I HATED putting our hound mix, Sawyer in a kennel when we weren't around, we did, and it worked wonders for him. We only did it for about 6 months though. I still find the occasional thing he's chewed at night, but he no longer will mess with anything that could harm him. (That, and we "puppy-proof" the house every night when we go to bed...lol... Kennels can be expensive as well though. I've known folks who kept their pups in the bathroom if they couldn't do a kennel....

Mequet, The shock collar is just a collar you use while training the dog, it is not one that you would leave on her, it can't get wet or dirty. You put it on her and when she goes to jump the fence you zap her. it is a mind tingle sencention but they are not expecting it and act like it's killing them, it's not. you can bring her out on a leash and walk around a few mins and then let go of the leash, when she goes to jump over the fence zap! but zap right when u see her starting to go over not durning the act, cause she may be in the middle of the jump, and still go over, then you lost the fight. If she gets over the fence with the collar it will be close to impossible to correct the behavior then. but if you can zap before she goes over and stop her it will only take a few times and she will know or at least think she will get zapped. I haven't used it in about 2 years, so I will have to charge up the battery and see if it still works My new puppie I got a west highland terrior, is inside but when I take her out she goes on a leash because she is a runner too,

OKay I used to be a K-9 security officer and as part of my job we had to learn how to train dogs. #1 german sheperds are really intelligent as you've already noticed. The good thing about that is they're also easy to train. You need to take about 45min-1 hour a day and train the dog to sit, heal, stay and come. I'm sure there's an abundance of training tips avaivable on the net. #2 (sorry tai) DO NOT use a choker to tie her up a choker is a training device and should only be used as such a dog will pull and pul until they choke themselves to death however you could use a runner or even just cement a pole in the yard with a swivel and a body harness. The training is key though this way if the dog does escape it will return when you call. Another thing is with the proper training your hubby will love the dog as well. Just give a little time and patience and you'll be able to keep your beloved Sadie. This dog is not too old to train. Good Luck :)~

Oh, also, DON'T chase her if she gets out. Dogs think this is a "game" if you do, or they fear your anger. Either way, they will be less likely to come back to you. If she gets out, run in the house really quick, grab her favorite treat (cheese works WONDERFULLY!), and call her like you think she is just the best thing in the world. Walk toward her slowly, sweetly calling her in a high voice, and hold the cheese or whatever out for her to see and smell, and when she comes back to you, as you catch her, give it to her. Praise her and tell her how wonderful she is. If you want to reinforce it, do this in the back yard, even when she is not out of the fence. She will associate the tone of your voice and your actions as "treat time!", and be more than willing to come to you.

O.K., here's bottom line-rawillow, I tried that, believe me. I used up a whole package of lunch meat, calling her and tossing down some meat in efforts to lure her to the gate-doesn't work. Also, here are some things I left out. My daughter (6) doesn't like Sadie. When she was a younger puppy, she loved to jump on people-problem being that she was bigger than my daughter and it hurt. So, I got her to a point where she doesn't jump on people anymore, she doesn't nip at people, she's housebroken, etc. But, Bethany still doesn't like her because of how things were before. Also, she's EXTREMELY smart. So she knows that if she comes to me when she gets out, she'll be cooped up again when I get her back in. Here's what I'm considering. I put in a call to the local police dept. to see if they would like to have her to train as a K-9. Then, I'd know she was well cared for, because I know they love those dogs and they take care of them really well because it's very important that they do their job when the time comes. Also, I'd be able to visit her. I just don't think it's feasible for me to keep her right now with all the circumstances involved. What do you think of that resolution?

Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (144 posts) at 12:53 PM:
A run is a great thing, as long as you don't keep the dog on it all the time. When I was a kid we had dogs, and they were kept on a run in the back yard. It worked pretty well, and the dog would only get loose once or twice a year. There was one problem with the situation, though. An excited dog on a run will run around you and trip you up. This is very frightening for a child and not too pleasant for an adult, either. Our first dog that I remember (there were others before her, but I was too young) was a very calm lab/springer spaniel mix and we were constantly out there playing with her. But the second, while extremely friendly, was very jumpy. Because he was so difficult to approach when excited, he was badly neglected, and that just made the problem worse. Looking back my parents know they did him a disservice by keeping him when he was not getting proper attention. Now that there are no longer kids in the house they have a dog again, but she's an indoor dog primarily and spoiled rotten. I guess they're making up for past sins. Anyway, my point in all this is that the escapee problem can be dealt with for not too much $$. Your daughter is only 6, and she will continue to grow much bigger, while the dog is probably closing in on full grown. Also, Sadie is likely to mellow out a little as she matures. As your daughter gets older she is bound to get more comfortable with her. Your prime concern in whether or not to keep the dog should be about what kind of life you are providing her. If you truly think she would be better off under different circumstances, then giving her away would be a mature, thoughtful choice. Eve

Fit, you have to do what you think is best, and what is available to you, so if you think that is a good solution, so do I. But I've had all those same problems with the rottweiler I used to have, and my black lab now thinks it is the best game EVER to jump the fence. The invisible fence works, if you can afford it, and it works WELL. A run (the line that goes the length of the yard) also works really well, and that's what Zeppelin has for the days that it's nice enough for him to be outside when I'm at work. And if you just can't make it work for you, you can't, and there's nothing wrong with that. But I'm sorry if you have to give her up. :(

Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (133 posts) at 01:02 PM:
Mequet, It is entirely possible that you could find her a spot as a service dog - depends on how she tests and what options are available in your area. Chances are, if she ends up in a service unit, she will be shipped to another area. For instance, dogs in GA are often sent to VA to train and then shipped across the country where they're needed. If you really love her, just please do not dump her at a shelter. The law in most areas says that if a dog is found, they have to be kept at a shelter for a minimum of 3 days to find a home. In the case of an owner turn-in, the shelter has the right to kill the dog at any time they please - right after the owner leaves if they so desire. They don't always do that, but that's something you should be aware of when considering your options. If you love her, please find her a good home.

Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (635 posts) at 01:34 PM:
Oh, I was not ever considering leaving her at a shelter. I called a no-kill shelter, but they wouldn't take her because they already had a German Shepherd and they said they only take one at a time. But, I know our local shelter only keeps them 3 days before deciding to euthanize or put up for adoption. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I left her there and they put her to sleep. But, I made a decision. I CAN'T DO IT!!!! I can't give her away. I just love her too much. I finally got her to come back in (after 3 hours) and she just licked me and laid by my feet and I started blubbering and I just can't do it! So, I decided that for now, until I find a more permanent solution, I'll just have to keep her in at all times. When she goes to the bathroom, I'll walk her out on a leash and put the baby in his high chair or hold him in one arm and her in the other hand-if nothing else, I'll really work my upper body muscles huh? When we leave to go somewhere, I'll shut her up in the bathroom. Hopefully, I can save up enough to do the invisible fence thing. In the meantime, I'll do the above to keep her safe. I'll just have to suck it up and put in however much time is necessary to make sure that she doesn't get out any more. Thanks to all of you for your suggestions, support, and helpful tips. I realllllly appreciate it. Most of all, thanks for being a shoulder for me today! I love you guys!

*wiping tears from her eyes and clapping like a little kid* "Yay, Yay!" I so hope it works out and you can get your sweet puppy under control! My husband and I both love German Shepherds but would never own one because my mom/brother couldn't take it. My parents and bro live in the country in Nebraska and neighbors' dogs often roam free. A G.S. followed them home one day after a walk -- he was nice. My mom went inside and my brother (then 8 or 9) was out front playing with the dog. Mom heard him screaming and found the dog tearing into his leg and dragging him across the yard. My mom is 4'11", 100 lbs soaking wet, but she went after that dog, got it off my brother and got both of them back in the house mostly intact. (My brother had a six-inch-long, bone-deep gash in his quadricep, on the outside of one leg.) The police came and the dog had to be shot on the spot because he was vicious -- he'd been abused, abandoned and was starving. I don't hold a grudge against G.S. at all, but they still make my family pretty fearful. I'm so happy you are going to try to keep your pup. Is she the momma to the baby you have, and is that baby a German Shepherd, too? Maybe you'll be a pro at dog-training when it's all said and done. And you'll be super buff from hauling the dog's leash in one arm, your little boy in the other. A thought: Could you run with Sadie in the a.m.? It's probably just long enough to get her warmed up, but it's something. Karenna

Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (635 posts) at 06:13 PM:
So, we actually have 3 dogs. One is a brindle boxer that I rescued. He was a stray that I found by my grandma's house and he was starved. I took him to the animal shelter, but I was too afraid that they would euthanize him so I went back and got him 2 days later. He's now in very good health. However, when I brought him home, I was unaware that Sadie was pregnant by the stupid black lab down the street. The fruits of one of her jaunts out of the fence, ya know? She had 3 puppies and I gave 2 away and kept one. I wanted to keep one because we're having Sadie spayed and she'll never have puppies again. The puppy's name is Amelia and she's cute as she can be (smart too). Charlie is the brindle boxer and I hadn't really planned on keeping him permanently. I've been in touch with a lady that runs a boxer rescue out of Gulfport (about an hour away) for a couple months now. She had a situation where she had to take in some boxers that were going to be put to sleep, so Charlie hasn't been able to go with her yet. I tried emailing her again last week and she has yet to respond. So, that's kind of why I was at the end of my rope: 1 daughter in school, 1 toddler, 1 grown dog, 1 almost grown dog, and 1 very young puppy-see what I mean? Charlie is going to be placed elsewhere soon (hopefully) and then, I'll just have these two knuckleheads to deal with. I tried taking Sadie with me once and she got off the leash!! The only way I could get her to follow me was to run all the way home.........that was a long run, let me tell you. So, I decided that I'm just going to have to put in some daily time trying to train her-I'm checking into some techniques and I already worked with her for about 20 mins. today and she's catching on quickly! But the pro at dog-training thing? Not likely-just frazzled with a couple of good (please please) dogs!

Hi everyone! This is my first time posting here, but I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone here:) I've just taken my 4wk photos and I think I see a difference! I'm excited but want some other unbiased opinions. I feel different, but I have also not been perfect. I've taken one too many "freedays" probably too often. I've kept up with my exercise and I'm proud of myself for that. I guess I just want it to happen a bit quicker! I wanted to put the pics on here anyway (even though I'm horrified!) because I really want to see the whole BFL through this time, not just the 12wks but really for life. I've done BFL 3 times now with good results but everytime I was close to my goal I found out I was pregnant:) Now after baby #3 (he's 18mths) we decided no more, so now it is truely my time. I'll be the only one in my body forever now, so I don't have any excuses. Thanks everyone for reading... please tell me what you think! Thanks again, Christine

Do you sweat during your UBWO or your LBWO ? I was using DVD's mostly for my upper & lower body - I was using Cathe Friedrich, anyway... I joined a gym last night and did my UBWO this morning at the gym, I did not sweat at all, I got a warm but not sweating like I am used to. So do you sweat when doing these workouts ? I definitely do during my HIIT's. My arms are sore so I do feel like Ive worked out but I have 3 days to cancel my gym membership if it isn't going to work right... I am totally confident in BFL but I might need to go back to my DVD's instead of the workouts in the book. What do you think ? By the way I am ending my 8th week and loving it but last weekend I had a bad eating weekend but I am back on track now =) Thanks! Laura =)

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (900 posts) at 10:35 AM:
With upper and lower- i get warm, but dont work up a sweat like you do with cardio. How are your dvds arranged, are they lots of reps for each weight? If so, it might be more of a cardio workout than a real *I am lifting my most possible ever heaviest weight* workout. This could be why you are sweating so much through it possibly. Just a thought.

Body for Life Forum Message by Brandy (33 posts) at 10:33 AM: Pictures for Motivation
Last week I cut out pictures from my Fitness RX Magazines (great magazine by the way) of women who are fit and who I thought would motivate me. I've hung them up on my fridge so that I can look at these pictures for motivation and anytime I felt like sneaking into the fridge for unauthorized foods. So far it has really worked. I'm not saying I want to look exactly like these women, but it really motivates me. However, a friend of mine came over last night and commented that it really isn't a good idea to have pictures like this up for my daughter to see. He claimed that my daughter will think this is what she has to look like and that it really wasn't good parenting. I'd like to hear from anyone who has any comments.

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (900 posts) at 10:38 AM:
I disagree. What is bad for your daughter to see is unfit, lean skinny models who starve themselves to look this way. Showing your daughter at a young age that you can exercise by healthy and set an example of how to look good correctly is not bad at all in my opinion.

Body for Life Forum Message by fit4ever (14 posts) at 10:40 AM:
I don't have any friends that don't think this is idealy how they want to look. You putting these images up is not going to change that.

Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (448 posts) at 10:45 AM:
I don't see the harm either. Your not telling your daughter that this is how people are SUPPOSED to look. Your just saying this is how you would like to look and it helps you to stay focused on BFL. I don't see how this would cause issues for her at all.

Body for Life Forum Message by rmkkjb (70 posts) at 10:54 AM:
My question is - how old is your daughter. If she's old enough that you can talk to her ask her what she sees in the pictures. You can talk to her about the difference between being fit and being skinny.

It is usualy the case that if the parents are fit and eat healthy, the child will also... Its not like you are putting up fashion models on the fridge anyway... Brandy said: Last week I cut out pictures from my Fitness RX Magazines (great magazine by the way) of women who are fit and who I thought would motivate me.

Brandy, I agree with the others. If you're not putting up pictures of Twiggy as your goal, lol, I don't see the harm. And like everyone else said too, you're setting a great example for your daughter! Jess

Me too! It's much better to aspire to a lean muscular look than the emaciated supermodel look. I'm kind of wondering about your friend's motives here. Is he concerned that you are setting unrealistic goals for yourself or focusing too much of your self worth on your appearance?

As a teacher, I deal with 12-year-old girls who have body issues all day long. I've been sharing my BFL journey with them and we discuss the reasons, other than pure vanity, that it's important to be fit (and how cool it is to be a "strong chick"). It sounds to me like you have a wonderful opportunity to discuss this with your daughter so she can AVOID the body shame/eating disorder trap that so many girls fall into. And, about your friend, he doesn't sound concerned to me...he just sounds nosy and condescending.

Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (635 posts) at 06:38 PM:
I have to agree with everyone else. I think it's more like you're teaching your daughter that it's good to be healthy and that that is what you're trying to achieve. I do agree that you should probably discuss with your daughter just in case there are questions she has or misunderstandings that need to be cleared up. Also, your friend does sound kind of quick to criticize.

i agree with Tai and fit, those skinny models that starve are not attractive anyway and no sane person wants to look like that, but a healthy well built person that's in fit condition, i say should movitate anyone to want to be like that. so I say , put the pics up . I got Me on one side of the refride and cory everson on the other. now that's motorvation!

Maybe not only sit and talk with your daughter, but your friend and find out why they think this. I mean, explain to them, ok. I am doing this program. I have sat down and discussed the issue with my daugter. Maybe their is a reason other than being judmental behind the comment. Its more than just pictures, its media, school and alot of other things that cause girls to have issues with body image. Do some research and find out about this too. I mean, it may become an all out discussion, and you need to be prepared.

Darn it, My head is hot this morning and I got the chills when I was on the elliptical glider this morning, was ok on the bicycle while I read BFL stories over and over and over but as soon as I got on the elliptical glider, I felt cold and I was sweating... Please don't let me get sick, then I won't make my goal... Man, why do these things have to happen? My son had a relapse last night and started barking like a seal when he coughs, thought he was getting better but it seems to be trying to get me as well. Now I feel like I should go straight back to bed, but I have a full days work ahead of me... It never ends, huh? Got a question, do BFL still award separate round winners each round, and when did the first one officially end? Just wondering? thanks, Udenia

Try some Zicam - it's homeopathic and helps you fight your cold. Someone in the gym recommended a product called Airborn too. As soon as I feel it coming on I start taking it - same with the kids and My whole family has been cold free this season although all of our friends have been sick. Take care!

Thanks Fattymcfatterson for keeping me going. I have really struggled this week to stay on track. I have had 2 cheat days. But after seeing these I will refocus and keep moving forward. I wanted to post this here to keep myself honest and to help those of you who may be going through the same thing. My son is on vacation from school this week so this means I get to sleep in. Well this AM I slept in. When I woke up I was feeling pretty sore from yesterdays lowerbody workout and the thought of the elliptical machine was NOT appealing at all LOL. So I decided to skip cardio today. I figured its just one day...no biggie... take a little break. Well NOW, I am really feeling like sh**. I feel very very sluggish, I have absolutely no ambition to do anything at all. I want to just go lay down and take a nap. I have been up for 3 hrs and have done nothing at all why the hell do I need a nap? I know that this is due to the fact that I skipped my cardio. Apparently that belief about it taking 4 weeks for anything to become a habit is true. I am kicking myself in the butt for missing cardio today. I am paying for it big time now. I can't go to the gym now because daycare is closed and I have my son with me. Its too cold to be going out for a walk. I do have some errands to run so I am going to be getting out. When hubby gets home tonight, hes going to do an upperbody workout and I am definitely going to do my ab workout. (I do that on cardio days now). Today has taught me that skipping a workout because you just don't feel like doing it is NOT worth it. Please everybody, save yourself some trouble...don't skip your workouts.. just do it even if you don't feel like it. They really really do make a difference in your day. Lisa :)

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (326 posts) at 12:45 PM:
I skipped my cardio today too. It's my first day well and I knew I was going to have a TON of work to catch up on when I got back in, so I went in early. Tomorrow is my free day, and because I continued to eat clean when I was sick, I'm going to go ahead and take it BUT I will work out in the morning because I've now gone 3 days in a row with no exercise.

Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (144 posts) at 01:08 PM:
You are so right Lisa! And I have found it's those days when I really don't want to work out that I end up getting the most benefit out of the work out, both physically and spiritually. Hubby always can tell when he comes home from work if I haven't been able to make it to the gym. I'm in an evil mood all day. Eve

Thread: How about solving the cravings problem? (113 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by JohnA (278 posts) at 12:35 PM: How about solving the cravings problem?
So, after “falling off the wagon” it looks like the new buzz in the forums are cravings. I didn’t want to spoil the other threads with my testament that I hardly have any cravings, but the truth is that my weight gaining diet is also a good cravings suppressor. It doesn't mean that in order to fight the craving you need to eat a lot, but there are some things that can be borrowed and used in a sliming down diet. I did some reading and I found one excellent article that summarizes best why people crave and what can be done about it: http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/nutrition/cravings.htm Here are the highlights: 1. Cravings are not psychological thing only. 2. Cravings that are suppressed for too long tend to burst into binge craze and drop out of the diet program. 3. Cravings can be controlled by eating what is craved in moderation. For myself, I’ve built a 1 oz of dark chocolate a day into my diet, because this is what I love the most. I find it very useful and it helps me stay away from my other favorite – ice cream. Nutrition wise, dark chocolate is better then ice cream and it has anti-oxidants. Would you guys be interested in a “Cravings Busting” two weeks mini-challenge? This time, you would replace one portion of one meal with a “Crave Buster”. A Crave Buster is a small piece, 100 calories or less, of a food that you usually crave. For example, if your 3p.m snack is an apple and a whey shake, you would replace the apple with 2 Oreo cookies. Every day you would post in a thread I start one of three words: CLEAN – means you ate nothing but your authorized foods plus the crave buster. CRAVE – means you had a strong craving, but you didn’t break you plan. BINGE – means you succumbed to the craving and ate way more then the crave buster. If you are interested, please post here and I’ll start this mini challenge on Monday, February 28th.

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (900 posts) at 12:42 PM:
Eating in moderation is not always possible. Having an eating disorder my view is askewed. I cannot just have two oreos - it doesnt work that way. Also a lot of people have a much easier time NOT having any rather than stopping at just one or two. Also, if people get the mindset, that oh today, one or two oreos is ok, or whatever, it can lead down to the dark side. I'm not saying that your idea would not work for everyone - it just would not work for me. I know that :)

Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (133 posts) at 01:14 PM:
Hi John, I agree with Tai - I don't do moderation very well. Once my little nasty monster gets a taste of what she wants, she devours everything possible. For me, keeping the little monster in check is the only solution. Free day is my crave buster... I'd love to participate but can't - sorry...

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (326 posts) at 01:23 PM:
I'm with them, too, John. I do think it's a great idea for people who can have a whole package of Oreos around and only eat 2. But I'm not one of them. Free day is my crave buster, too.

Body for Life Forum Message by needstolose (59 posts) at 01:26 PM:
Well I think your idea is really good. I agree that if you do not eat bad foods on a daily basis but you still have cravings your body needs something. I have been lucky so far on not having cravings but if they begin I do believe a small amount of what I am craving would help stop me from an all out binge. this would also help on 'free days' if you feel your getting a little something everyday you wouldn't need to go all out all day long on your free day - maybe that could me modified as well (at least in my case) I appreciate your research and your strive to help people with their cravings John.

Body for Life Forum Message by needstolose (59 posts) at 01:28 PM:

I've got to go with the other ladies on this one. My memory is foggy, but I think I heard something recently on NPR about research showing women tend to have a harder time with this just-a-little approach. It also showed women have a harder time getting themselves to exercise after indulging. There's something biochemical involved, but I don't remember all the details.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mahalia (133 posts) at 01:47 PM:
Cravings! I look at what i am craving. Mostly from past experience. I ask myself these questions. Do I need water. Do I need to eat? What time of the month is it? IF these can be resolved good. Then I make a check, am I bored or is there some stressor? If it an be resolved here by doing something else constructive good. If not I analyze specifically the main components i am craving. A week or two ago I was craving meat, of all things. Then i founbd out I should be having around 130g protein a day. I was at 100g. So I added in an extra scoop to my protein shake. If I am craving salt big time I take it as an indication that I need salt. If I am craing stuff like potatoes then I know I need minerals. If green things smell incredible, ie grass on a particular day i eat salad. In the past I suffered a medicalconditio called pica. I craved soil big time. In my pregnancy i used to smell soil all the time. I would want to put a spoonfukl in my mouth and taste it. Never did. Also the smell of beer was sooo appealing. As was potato skins. My OB gyn. said I was mineral deficient and was having these cravings. HE is the one who urged me to pay attention to cravings. Learn to associate cravings with wht your body needs. Any way I am pretty good with the craving thing. am with taI ON THE SUGAR THING. A little can snd me on a binge.

Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (635 posts) at 01:50 PM:
Amen sisters! I am one of those who can't eat just one. If I start, it's a lost cause-and for me, it's totally psychological and not at all physical. I know that if I started with the "one or two oreos" thing, it would turn into a very slippery slope and next thing you know I'd be eating my "one or two (whole packages) of oreos" every day. I agree that this approach would work for some, but most definitely not for me. Somehow it IS easier for me to say unequivocally no than it is for me to stop once I start.

Body for Life Forum Message by SinCityGirl05 (321 posts) at 03:02 PM:
I have to say, I keep my cravings for free day, I go all out then too. Its hormones, its the sugar and caffine I crave. However for another week until I am off the cipro, no caffine, chocolate or anything like that. Cipro INTENSIFIES OR DOUBLES the affects of caffine..chocolate contains caffine, and can hamper the affects of the medication. Oh man. Bummer. I have had since free day sunday a ziplock bag of oreos in my pantry and have not touched them since sunday. I sent them all to work with Shawn today for him and his coworkers to eat.

Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (448 posts) at 03:18 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (479 posts) at 03:25 PM:
I've found that I personally have an insane physical reaction to highly-processed sugar. Do I avoid it completely? Not a chance. But will I eat two 200-calorie, 10-g-fat, 24-g-sugar cookies at once on my free day again? Not if I can help it! It was almost like ipecac with a tequila chaser -- on an empty stomach. That said ... I've subconsciously taken some advice I got from some folks on here at different times and let myself have a bit of a treat occasionally (outside of free day). Each week, those occasions become fewer and fewer, and with each occasion, I enjoy it more and have more restraint. I wanted icecream and chocolate very bad yesterday (a bad day) all day, but distracted myself and ate good. Finally, after a great supper, I said to my hubby, "OK, I'm going to have some icecream and a little ff pudding with it." And I actually put the serving IN A BOWL and ate it that way, instead of out of the carton like an animal! (Yay, me!) N-E-WAY ... JohnA, you probably have a great point here, and I'm interested in the article you mentioned as well as the NPR thing someone else mentioned (if I can find it). But alas, I know I couldn't do this daily, because even if I craved chocolate and had the suitable substitute, I'd immediately crave salt and it would snowball into a two-fisted Hershey's-and-Fischer fiesta. :-) I hope some folks can try this! I'll be cheering. Karenna

I'm kind of scared, my fiancee made an appointment for me tomorrow morning to have my body fat measured, the kind where they dunk you under water.  Everyone keeps saying that those tanita scales guess low, mine says I'm at 52%, I'm gonna find out my body fat is like 68 % or something.  I'm feeling very scared here.  I'm worried that this is going to be like a brick wall slamming me to a halt.  I've been doing so good but I have noticed that in two weeks instead of losing weight I've actually gained 3 pounds.  I havn't taken my measurements yet - I do that on Saturday - and my clothes do seem to be looser but I don't know if I'm imagining that.  HELP!

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (900 posts) at 01:54 PM:

What I always say is that it's better to know for sure than to question and wonder. Seriously, if you know-at least then you have a finite starting point and you KNOW it's right. You don't have to do this guessing game that most of us do. That said, if it totally sucks at least you're already doing something about it and you know that the number will go down.

Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (144 posts) at 02:10 PM:
Monica, I understand your fear, but you know even if the dunking renders a larger number that will not increase the amount of fat on your body and it will not interfere with your losing it. What it will do is help you see how much you have lost the next time you have it done. I think it will be very interesting to compare how much the Tanita says you have lost after the 12 weeks with how much the hydrostatic weighing says you've lost.

Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (189 posts) at 02:44 PM:
Monica, Let me put your mind at ease about this: you are NOT going to be more than 60% body fat, because it would almost be anatomically impossible for someone at your weight! You might come in at 50-55% or so, but I can't imagine any higher. Besides, you're going to change that number so quickly that it won't matter anyhow. In a few months, you'll be bragging about how high it was before you lost all that weight!! Keep up the good fight, Rob

Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (635 posts) at 01:59 PM:
Well, I'm anti-tanning, but that's just my point of view. I don't think it's worth the dangers of getting skin cancer and if you burn easily, the danger is greater. That said, I've heard a lot of good things about the airbrush tanning thing and I plan on doing it when I hit my goal-for my final after pictures. It's not long-lasting, and it takes maintenance appointments, but I've heard it looks very natural.

Body for Life Forum Message by personalizeabook (259 posts) at 02:47 PM:
I wonder if this is allowed for the Body-For-Life Challenge?  I was actually thinking of doing that as well since it will soon be available at the gym I go at.

Body for Life Forum Message by SinCityGirl05 (321 posts) at 02:49 PM:
I agree with Fit, definitely do not use tanning beds. I am as fair as they come, and I have had my share of sunburns as a child and have tried for a short time to use beds, they will not work on our fair skin. We do not have the chemicals in our body to make our skin dark. Either you have it or don't. We don't unfortunately. Best bet, Airbrush spray tanning. I plan to do that myself so I look even. The store bought stuff turns your skin a weird shade and does not look natural. Call around and price, its really not too expensive.

Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (144 posts) at 02:52 PM:
It is not only allowed, putting on a little color (either by tanning or artificial means) is encouraged to help show off muscle definition.

Body for Life Forum Message by drjlbaileyii (97 posts) at 03:26 PM:
ok the short term use of a tanning bed is the same as going outside and getting sun. If you are a chronic user-meaning weekly then your increase risk is very high. If it for a short term us like for bfl 12 week picture it is ok. The airbrush is good if you can not move and shower for a day. It is a dye and dyes your skin. whatever you choose..If you are fairskinned use the dye.spray on..short term use is fine.No different than being in the sun during summer..

I'm very fair skin... my mother has red hair and I unfortunately inherited the fair skin but no red hair *lol*. I've used tanning beds before but I wouldn't get really "Dark" like some people due after 10 sessions...since I can't go for long periods of times, I would only get a little bronzed but that's it.

My husband only has to look at the sun and he gets dark! Lucky him!!!! *lol*

Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (479 posts) at 03:46 PM:
I love the sun (solar-powered!), but alas, am trying to break my tanning habits. I hate tanning beds, but have used them to treat SAD and psoriasis. I've seen the "Mystic Tan" spray-on tan on folks -- some people turn orange, some people look alright. It does stain clothes and is a tad messy, but would probably be fine for your 12-week shots. :-)

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (900 posts) at 04:05 PM:
There are low uv beds available at a higher price at some salons where you dont burn. These are good to get a base tan. Also, the quality of the cream and the tingle factor you use has a big impact on your tanning also. I started with the low uv bed (cant remember that it was called) to get the base tan before moving onto the regular beds that have the hotter bulbs.

I love being tanned but am not too keen on using sunbeds. I use a mousse called St Tropez....I imagine it probably came from America originally. You have to first exfoliate in the shower, moisturise all over and then, with protective gloves on, apply the mousse all over. Go to bed with the stuff on and next morning when you shower you have a lovely tan!! I really love it and I find it's really easy to use. I have also heard that a product called Fake Bake is even better. N.B. The mousse really stinks so if you have a "night" planned with your partner, forget it! My bf won't come near me when I apply it ;) Yx

ive used the mystic tan before....i liked it. i just work cloths i didnt care about when i went and didnt have any trouble with the staining cloths anyways and couldnt shower for a while. only down fall...the smell. it isnt bad, but i dont really like it and it stays after the shower. but it is worth it to me...i try to stay out of the sun-- tryingto fight age!!! :):) do be careful to use the cream they give you for your knuckles etc. or you will get orange spots!

Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (87 posts) at 07:52 PM:
I always have a tan, people don't realize just how fair I really am, same here red hair in the family and I got the fair skin, but over time, you just have to stick with it you will tan. Keep yourself oiled up, really and noxzema is my answer to the slighest burn.. Hey I gave up smoking 17 years ago, hardly drink anymore, gave up junk food, just don't ask me to give up the sun!

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (900 posts) at 08:08 PM:
The creams you get have either a hot or cold 'tingle'. Basically it helps brings Melanin to the surface of your skin making you look red. (even if you arent burnt). This speeds up the tanning process. It kinda feels like prickly heat - the higher the tingle factor, the hotter the heat on your skin even if you dont hop under a bulb. My personal preference, HOT HOT HOT!! :D My gym sells me the hot creams they cant sell to anyone else.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mahalia (133 posts) at 08:08 PM:
Well I tan using a booth once a week. I do it because i don't see the sun for about 5-6 months. Right now it is a blessing to see it get light out at 8am. Normally i go to work and it is dark and when i am off it is dark again. So tanning is helpful in Seasonal Affective Disorder. 10 minutes a week is shorter than 20 minutes a day in fromnt of a sunlamp. Let me tell you about the summer up here. Almost 22 hours of sun!!! per day!!! It is so nice. It is sunny ad midnight. Any way, the amount I tan compared to the healthy amounts of sunlight needed is balanced.

Ok, I was doing cardio this morning and this guy gets on the elliptical next to me stinking to high heaven of cologne.  I wanted to puke.  I was already at minute 14 so i was breathing really hard and all I could breathe in was his cologne!! YUCK!  I wanted to beat him with my nalgene water bottle!  I'm really sensitive to smells as it is, they used to send me into asthma attacks.  Thank God I don't seem to have asthma anymore but still, yuck.  It should be illegal for somone to smell like perfume or cologne at the gym.  There should be some kind of a sniff detector at the door and if you smell too much you have to go directly to the showers! lol  just my editorial for the day! -Monica

Whoa momma-this guy that I've mentioned before who was a member of the gym that I used to go to was soooo bad about that. And it was really stinky cologne too-why is it that when someone bathes in cologne, it's never the kind that smells good?

OK, Monica, no juicy farts and no cologne, that sounds like reasonable requests. Btw, in the gum at work, the treadmills are put up against a section of the room that does not have air suction above. There is a guy who really works the machine, with heavy thumping and great sweat. I cannot walk next to that half of the gym when he is on because of the noise and stench.

Thread: Losing in areas that I want to keep! (80 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Amanda (13 posts) at 02:37 PM: Losing in areas that I want to keep!
Hi all! I am on my 5th week and have lost 7 lbs. and several inches. I have been told that I am a skinny-fat person. Which I guess means I am a stick with a tire around my middle. Anyway, the problem is that I seem to be losing my boobs (don't want to lose) and my butt (can't afford to lose). I know I cannot spot reduce my middle or tell my body where to lose the fat. Does anyone out there know if this will maybe stop after time and with the toning will I get to keep my chest and butt? I'm just feeling awkward about the whole thing and my middle feels as bloated as ever. My pants used to look good in the back, now my pants are still tight around my middle but my pants are feeling baggy in the rear. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!

Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (133 posts) at 03:21 PM:
Amanda, I know how you feel - I have lost 2 inches in my breasts in the last 5+ weeks. I am a little curvy, but honestly, I wouldn't mind if it was almost all gone. OK, here's the deal - if you're naturally pretty slim, you probably are not naturally "endowed" with fat in the breast area. The same with your behind. However - the good news is that as your pecs tighten below your breasts, it will give them a natural lift and make them seem larger than they are. As far as your behind, you might want to really concentrate on doing exercises that will add bulk to your glutes. The "bottom" line is that you want a nice, high, toned tush, and not one that wiggles and jiggles when you walk. If it's disappearing while you're losing fat, then it's fat you're losing in your behind. If you're naturally pretty slim, then I would definitely stay away from extra cardio and really work the BFL program exactly as specified - concentrate on building muscle. If you build your shoulders, arms and back, and then also build your legs and glutes up, this will really give you a nice muscular, curvy look without any jiggling...

Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (479 posts) at 03:38 PM:
Rawillow gave some good advice, Amanda, especially in regard to your tush exercises. I looked at your profile and the measurements, in an attempt to get a "picture" of your body's fat distribution. Looks like you've got nice, lean limbs, very slim hips and in proportion to those lean limbs and slim hips your waist appears wide. Some folks have wide waists -- it's just the way we're built. I've seen a few women on here who have similar distribution of their measurements. Based on your weight and body fat, it looks like you're pretty slim, too -- in that average but healthy range. I'm not a medical professional, but I do know that when it comes to fat distribution, the most dangerous place for humans to carry fat is around their vital organs. You're surely not in the dangerously fat zone, but it's so smart that you're trying to trim what you have and build up your health! It would probably be easy to consider oneself "skinny" and healthy if you have the limbs to support a Size 5 pair of jeans and arms that look great in tank tops, even if there's a bit of a tummy there. Anyway -- I digress, and really I just wanted to say that you should keep with the program, work those butt muscles to lift it up while it's burning off, and keep with the cardio BFL-style. You'll have more energy and feel great soon! BTW -- have you seen Margroovy's profile? I believe it was her (forgive me if I'm wrong!) who said she was frustrated because she could so wear a size 6, but her waist was just too wide. As you can see, it's not fat, simply her structure. :-) Karenna

Body for Life Forum Message by Amanda (13 posts) at 06:55 PM:
Thanks so much for the advice and encouragement! I currently wear a size 5 to 7 in juniors and a 2 in women's, however, my middle is fat and jiggly and I am DEFINITELY out of shape (unhealthy). Weird huh? I don't quite understand it. I can totally relate to Margroovy! Anyway, I will continue with BFL as descibed in the book and add some glute work. Thanks again, I greatly appreciate it! You guys are awesome!! :)

Overall I feel good about my progress....good not great.  My stomach is the toughest area so I'll need to wait it out and really watch my eating for results.

I'm happy with my back, ripples are disappearing.  And I was brave enough to wear a suit with no skirt!  Such chunky legs I have...need to turn 'em into muscle.

The only disappointment is knowing I'll need another 12 wk challenge to get my body where I want it before I go into BFL maintanence.  Sigh....but I didn't pack on 50lbs overnight!

Hi gang, Well, I thought I'd post a short note about how my BFL week went post my "reality sets in" day of discouragement. Tuesday I had a very good cardio on the treadmill. Hit my 10 and went above my max HR. Wednesday I had one of my top two UBWO. Hit a new high on decline bench and on preacher curls. Today I had great cardio. Well on my way to 3 miles on the treadmill (althought that's a goal of weeks, rather than days). Ate well, and ate enough. More importantly, my attitude has improved 100% from that down day. I have you all to thank for that in large measure, plus it just so happened that the little lessons in the Success Journal were quite timely. So, in retrospect, I was getting pretty worked up over nothing. If it takes me another 12-24 weeks to achieve my overarching goals (although I am confident I'll hit at least three out of five for this challenge), then that's how long it takes me. Of course, that's what you guys were trying to tell me all along..... :) Dan

Body for Life Forum Message by twinmom (121 posts) at 08:05 PM: Motivational Talk
Hi All, Well as I told all of you last week, the gym that I go to, asked me to do a motivational talk and to bring my pictures of my success. I did that talk last night and felt great about empowering others to help achieve their goals of proper nutrition and exercise. The talk also indicated to me that I have learned alot on my road to health and well being. I was not nervous at all doing the talk. I was so confident that I did not prepare too much (because of my hectic day at work) but rather spoke from the heart. I never had this confidence before BFL. I felt that I knew enough or more about fitness and nutrition then some of the staff at the gym. All this from the BFL book and info that I learned from on my BFL journey. When I looked at my pictures and displayed them for all to see, I was so proud of how far I have come in the last 9 weeks. People were amazed at my transformation. Some did not even recognize me. I was not ashamed of my before pictures but rather realized that that person in those pictures did not have the knowledge of proper nutrition and exercise. Well, that person does not exist anymore. There is a brand new girl in town who knows what she is doing and would gladly share it with anyone who will listen. Trust BFL to give you the knowledge to change your life and achieve your fitness/health goals. Once you give it a chance, you will find that it will take you to new heights. Take care, Annette

It's just water weight gain as creatine pulls water into your muscles. If you don't mind a bit of bloating and aren't prone to having neurotic freak outs when the scale hangs for a while or jumps up a bit after a creatine dose, I don't think there's anything wrong with taking it while cutting. Most women can't handle the scale weight thing, the babies. ;)

Hi Everyone! This is the first week of my challenge and I have a question that I am hoping someone can help me with. I done my first HIIT cardio on Tuesday and when I was done and stepped off of the treadmill, I was so dizzy that I could barely stand up. Is this normal? Thank goodness my husband was in the garage with me! My vision was even blurry. This only lasted a couple of minutes, but I did have to hold on to him to make my way back in to the house. I felt great the rest of the day, but now I am kind of scared to go try again....and today is of course cardio day again =) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (900 posts) at 09:40 AM:
It could be a few things. 1) Maybe your body is just not use to cardio of that intensity.. 2) Maybe you are slightly hypoglycemic and need to have a little something to eat before working out that hard :) I know sometimes I work so hard when I get off that crosstrainer I can barely stand. Not only are the lil leggies so tired, but my entire balance is off because of that circular motion. (that and I am also one of THE most uncorordinated people in the world lol).

Body for Life Forum Message by Grace2bfit (64 posts) at 09:50 AM:
I don't think that dizziness is SUPPOSED to be normal, but it can certainly happen. I had a cardio workout once where I wouldn't really consider it to be HIIT...not even close actually, but when I was done...I was soo dizzy and nauseas I had to go to the car to lie down while my husband finished his w/o. Not sure what it was and thank God my free day was the next day so I had a day off, but the only thing I can think of is that I didn't work out first thing...it was about 1pm and I hadn't eaten before (I had been up for a couple of hours)...so I kind of sabatoged myself. You know your body better than anything and if you need to eat a little something about 1 hour to 30 minutes before...maybe you should!

Body for Life Forum Message by Robyn (23 posts) at 10:37 AM:
Go and have your blood pressure checked, I occasionaly suffer from low blood pressure and when my blood pressure does go low I can get quite bad dizzy spells as well as my vision goes all dark and I have to either sit straight back down or grab hold on to the wall, usually if standing up to quickly or bending over very low and standing back up.. Maybe from the exertion and then jumping off the bike to quick?? although the HIIT is layed out as 20 mins thats not a hard and fast rule maybe take an extra few minutes to cool down properly? but definately go and get your blood pressure checked...you should always do these things anyway before starting any intense kind of training...

It could be dehydration as well but when I am working with clients they become dizzy when they have not eaten enough food that day or have taken a 5-7 hour break from any food.

You may have gotten up beyond your VO2 max. Or past the point that you body is able to absorb oxygen, making you a bit staved for it. I've done the same thing on the treadmill in the past on occasion with sustained 70-80% exertion. Did you get a feeling like tunnel vision while you were running?

Body for Life Forum Message by midlifemama (3 posts) at 04:22 PM:
Thank you to everyone for your insight and all of your helpful suggestions. I went ahead with my cardio today and just started out a bit slower than I did on Tuesday. Everything went fine although I was a bit off balance when I got done. Nothing like I experienced the last time. I am definitely going to have my blood pressure and sugar checked. I have never had a problem with it, however it does run in my family...better to be safe than sorry. =) Hopefully, it was just a case of over doing things on my first try. I have to remember that I am not as young as I use to be! I may trying eating a little bit an hour or so before my cardio and see if that helps any. And to popeye...I don't think I got the feeling of tunnel vision but I swear I seen a set of pearly gates in front of me!! =D That's what is so wierd, I felt fine while doing my cardio. It's only when I was done and stepped off the treadmill that it hit me like a brick. I will take things a bit slower and see how I do. Thanks so much to all of you! I really appreciate it.

It's good news that you felt ok whilst you were actually doing your cardio...both my BF and I have experienced something similar on our intense cardio workouts (note that this only happened on the treadmill however!) Is it possible that it wasn't down to being slightly disorientated? I'm 100% sure that's what our "dizzyness" was down to. Due to the continuous movement and then suddenly stepping off, it kind of makes you feel a bit wobbly. To be on the safe side though I would go have yourself checked over but I'm willing to bet all tests come back ok! :) Y

Years ago I used to go to a spa and sit in the sauna for almost an hr and felt great, but when I would stand up and go out the door I would pass out, no one ever figured it out, but now I know that it was blood pooling in my legs, from sittin and getting over heated and then standing up to fast. so maybe you just have to slow down a bit, ok, take care, we want you to enjoy your workouts and look forward to the next workout, not be afraid. but do talk with your dr.

when you are finished your workout on the tredmill, continue going and continue walking slower and slower until you feel your heart rate drop down a few beats, that might help

Thank you Gymbunny and fostermama! I really think that I just went way overboard for my first cardio. I am going to take your suggestions and slow it down a bit more towards the end of my work out and see how that works. I am still very motivated and other than this problem I have had a great 1st week! Thanks again =)
