BTW Frugal, that is great that you got to meet Porter; was that at a book signing?
Body for Life Forum Message by FrugalMissM (49 posts) at 06:07 PM
Porter was originally from Orlando and the trainer and friend who helped him during his challenge, Eric Shrieves, still works in this area. The last time Porter was in town in late January, Eric asked him to speak at a seminar he was holding at the gym where Porter worked out all those years ago. :) It was originally just going to be for Eric's current clients, but he decided to open it up to the general public in the end.
I got to meet Porter and the 2002 1st runner up in the women's 40-49 age group Lynn Oglesby after the seminar. I have a big BFL challenge poster signed by Porter that I plan to stick up in my home gym when I actually manage to acquire a house and some gym equipment, LOL.

This is one of my FAVORITE desserts...so easy to make. I make several batches to keep in the refrigerator. Orange Jellow with pineapple is really, really good.
*********************************
Raylene's Jello
Here's a FANTASTIC snack I made up/adapted from others:
1 packet Sugar Free Jello - Your favorite flavor
2 cups low- or no-fat cottage cheese
1 serving of vanilla protein powder
1 can or about 2 servings of fresh fruit
Blend cottage cheese and protein powder together in the blender. While it blends, boil one cup of water and If your fruit is canned, drain and run under water to rinse off excess sugars. Divide the fruit between 4 containers (I use the glad throwaway containers - they are just the right size).
When water boils add it to jello and dissolve. Slowly add the jello to cottage cheese/protein powder mixture and let the blender run for about a minute.
Pour the cottage cheese mixture evenly between the 4 containers.
Chill for 4 or more hours. Add a dollop of Redi-whip to the top and enjoy (real whipped cream, come on - it's only 20 calories, 2g fat, less than 1 carb).
It's SO SO SO good and I can't even explain it. It's like mousse with little bits of nirvana in it. I do this with:
- Orange Jello & Mandarin Orange Slices
- Lime jello and crushed pineapple
- strawberry jello and peaches
- cranberry jello & fresh raspberries
For a real treat add 2/3 cups of strawberries to the cottage cheese mixture along with the jello and pour over fresh strawberries.
Nutritional Breakdown
About 160 calories 16g carbs, 16g protein, 3g fat.
Maybe try this in lieu of the pudding?

I'm just wondering how many fat grams everybody is shooting for each day. I'm 5'5", 150 lbs and trying to get down to about 135-140 and currently, I've been shooting for around 30g/day. But some days it seems like I've reached that by 3pm and I go over for the day. I'm just wondering if that number is too low and I should up it a little.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 02:25 PM
I am 5'2 - 127 currently, and aim for around 20 a day.
Body for Life Forum Message by beegee714 (127 posts) at 02:25 PM
Just wanted to add that a lot of my consumed fat comes from natural peanut butter, mixed nuts, string cheese, an occasional protein bar and breads. (Not all in one day though, at least not usually)
Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (124 posts) at 02:35 PM
I try to keep it below 30 gs, sometimes it will go as high as 34, so i am close,
No i would not step it up, stay at 30 or below, just plan your day a little more and watch the fat and carbs, the seek up on you
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 02:38 PM
Bars tend to be evil where it comes to fat. Some have up to 8 grams and if you have that as a meal once or twice a day - EEK 16 grams just from a little bar.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (500 posts) at 03:32 PM
I would say I eat about 40g of fat per day. Most of it good fat. But that comes out to just under 30% of my calories, which is what EFL calls for.
Body for Life Forum Message by personalizeabook (300 posts) at 03:45 PM
Tai-Kee: Myoplex Lite Caramel Apple Crisp has 4 grams of fat (which is not all that bad)..but some of them are a lot more then that.
I haven't really given the fat contents much thought. I try to eat as clean as possible, ...now I'm wondering if I should count my grams of fat??!??
Body for Life Forum Message by beegee714 (127 posts) at 03:54 PM
I usually try to stay away from the bars completely. I just buy a few in case I'm going to be out for the afternoon and want to stay on target. (and if I need a chocolate fix)

Mark, in general, as long as you are progressing towards your goals and you don’t find yourself agonized by hunger and cravings, you are doing the right things.
Since you are analyzing your intake, how about finding out how much saturated fats, sugars and fiber are you consuming? There might be some fine tuning that can help you achieve your goals.

Just my opinion but i would not eat so little because your body is going to go into starvation mode and hold on to every ounce of fat it can. That is what a trainer told me anyway. I also ready somewhere in the EfL book it said that the average woman should eat 1500 calories and if you are trying to build muscle (which burn tons of calories), eating that little is not going to cut it. I would not go under 1200 calories if i were you, i just do not see how eating that little is good for the body. Where in the world would you get your energy from. Hope i helped some.
Body for Life Forum Message by JohnA (295 posts) at 12:50 PM
wantagreatbody, I think a shake is half a meal. As said above, you better have some high glycimic carbs like dextrose (corn sugar) with the shake in order to make it more effective. So dextrose+whey shake = 1 meal.
I figured that a weight training session costs me 250 calories, so I replenish it with 250/4=62grams of dextrose which is roughly 12 tsp mixed in 20 oz water. With a dash of lemon it is a great lemonade for USD $0.40 - beats Gatorade.

It can actually enhance weight loss, even if it's minimal. Caffeine was one of the ingredients in the ECA stack that was so popular with fitness/bodybuilder professionals up until a few years ago (when ephedra was deemed "unsafe"). Of course, this is provided you aren't dumping a ton of sugar and cream in it....or relying on Starbucks to make your coffee...teehee!!

Coffee with no sugar (you can use splenda) is fine and skim milk only but Bill Phillips says that for every cup of coffee or diet soda you drink you have to drink an extra cup of water over and above your daily quota.

Now the question is, does coffee impact weight loss?
Body for Life Forum Message by Trish (2 posts) at 05:49 AM
I am on week 9 and I have continued to have my coffee every day. I have lost 17 pounds and 21 inches so I don't think it hurts the weight loss. I do drink my coffee black and I also drink a ton of water every day. I have much better cardio on the days I have my 2 cups first thing in the morning so I thing you can drink it as long as you don't add the fattening stuff to it and drink extra water.
Body for Life Forum Message by momofthreegirls (242 posts) at 07:28 AM
I cannot function without my coffee. I also drink it "straight". the nice thing about being a coffee addict is that when I started Kickstart, it didn't make me jittery at all, and actually, I didn't even need my coffee that morning. I love my coffee!!
Body for Life Forum Message by nlp1669 (121 posts) at 02:07 PM
Be sure to drink a glass of water to counteract (in a sense) the coffee.

I am glad that someone asked this question because i am new and i was wondering the same thing. I loooovvvveee coffe, could not live with out it. I guess is would make since to drink a cup of water for every cup of coffee you have. I will start doing that. Just my opinion, I do not see how caffiene can hinder weight loss. Everything i have ever read says it helps speed up weight loss but i do think to much is a bad thing though. Just my 2 cents.

A favorite breakfast of mine is 1/2 cup of Kashi GoLean Crunch with 1/2 cup of milk and a cup of Eggbeaters. The protein/carbs are equal at around 32g and it's VERY filling!! Plus, the Kashi has a LOT of fiber in it (probably the reason it fills me up for hours).
I would probably cut the banana, unless this is a meal you eat after lifting weights.

It doesn't appear to me that you are eating too much, as long as your portion sizes are right - if anything, I would say you need to add some veggies into your daily plan.

Body for Life Forum Message by Katy (67 posts) at 07:50 AM
Xaviermom, I was eating the same thing & was feeling the same way you are. It turned out that my portions were too large.
Proteins, such as chicken breast, should be roughly the size of the PALM of your hand. Most of the pieces I had were as big as my whole hand, but that's too much. I had to cut one in half.
Carbs, such as a potato should be the size of your clenched fist. Most potatoes are bigger than my fist, so I had to look for really small ones.
My husband makes fun of me for "clenching my fist at my dinner", but hey, it works!
Good luck!

One thing I noticed was that on your first meal, you have oatmeal and milk, which are both considered carbs, so you might want to pick one or the other. But, everything else looks fine-just do like Katy suggests and check your portions to make sure you're not going over.

Hey thanks for the respones everyone,, now I have a better idea of where to cut back on,,one being portion sizes,, I don't always do the clinch fist and palm thing I eyeball it most of the time so I will stop that,, and not adding the skim milk in the oatmeal will be alittle harder to swallow because I hate eating oatmeal cooked with just water but will try it sometimes.
Thanks again everyone

Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (77 posts) at 09:48 AM
I am about to start using it because there is only so much cottage cheese, eggs, and chix breast one can take in a lifetime. You know it's bad when you polish of a carton of cottage cheese easily in 2 days or less. And the egg's don't even get me started here! The Eating for Life has a lot of recipes also the bodyforlife.com has a lot of recipes as well.
Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (285 posts) at 10:11 AM
Me, too; without the powders, my protein is always too low
Body for Life Forum Message by JohnA (295 posts) at 12:20 PM
Whey protein is digested very quickly (30 min). What is not used converts to fat like unused carbs. There are other types of proteins like Egg Protein powders for moderate release and Casin for slow release. The Whey is better consumed after workout; Egg protein during the day and Casin in your last meal for the night.
You should try beans and brown rice. This is a whole protein combination that provides all the amino acids needed by the body, it is rich in fibers too. I have this for dinner.
Body for Life Forum Message by emilyuward (11 posts) at 01:38 PM

This is a total venting post & hopefully I'll cool down before 'HE" gets home...
I was given a gift at xmas of a personal chef service. After meeting with the Chef, he agrees to make dinners following the EFL program, even though the meals are for the entire family.
January's menu was perfect, Feb's menu my DH called the Chef & switched 1 meal to Jambalya, I was pissed but let it go.
For March - I approved the EFL menu. Then received another email from the Chef that says, "Revised Menu". I'm confused then shocked as I read that two of the five meals are Lousiana style Crab Cakes & Bone-in Pork Smothered in Gravy with Collard Greens! WTF!!!!
He is sabotaging me, using MY gift to make His favorite & unhealthy meals. It really makes me furious. This gift was for the days I didn't want to cook dinner & could just reheat healthy pre-cooked meals.
UGH< UGH< UGH!!!!! (Now breathing to regain composure.)
Whew...okay, I'm done. Still mad but it's out of my system. Ugh!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (500 posts) at 01:55 PM
I don't blame you for being mad! It's your gift! But I do hope you can calm down before he gets home so you can tell him sanely and rationally to quit it if he doesn't want to be beaten to death with a Lousiana Crab Cake. :D

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 01:56 PM
Ok - I do think you have a right to be a little peeved here.
He bought you a Christmas present, but is now using it for himself.
Maybe you need to sit down (calmly) with him and tell him that he is sabotaging your efforts here.
Ask him if he can revise or make suggestions for the monthly menu on your free days - that way he can get some things he likes - and you still stay sane.
And on another note..
Where they HELL do I get me one of those chefs? :D
Body for Life Forum Message by silvertalons33 (138 posts) at 03:22 PM
or you could just sit across the table from him eating a dry chicken breast with brown rice and some vegetables chocking down the water to make it more palletable. If that dosen't make him feel guilty nothing will

So for lunch today I have a yummy tuna salad. Usually it is very yummy. No problem there.
Today I bought lunch at a cafe and dropped it off for BF - he does not always get out and eat, so I like to make sure he's eating SOMETHING.
Today I picked him up this thai pork and shrimp stir fry with noodles.
Not BFl authorised, but definately better than normal take out.
OMG did it smell and look devine. I returned to work, stare at my Tuna salad while little tears drip into the baslamic vinegar in bitter disappointment. It just really does not appeal now.
However! In the back of my mind are the size 6 pants I am aiming for next. The goal of being able to wear my little red bikini for week 12 photos. Being able to see the muscle definition in my arms without flexing.. Seeing my thigh muscle run ALLLL the way along my leg instead of cellulite.
*chews on her tuna salad like a cow* It's really good... Reallly reallly...

Honestly, why don't you all just modify some Asian recipes to be BFL authorized? All it takes most of the time is replacing the sugar with Splenda and the oil with some cooking spray...and bake instead of deep fry.
Sheesh.
That's what I did through all of my challenges. Who can stand eating blah American health food staples all the time?
:P
There are at least half a dozen stir fry/Asian salad recipes in the 175 recipe file I posted here:
http://maggiewang.com/index.php?p=36
And this cookbook is a great resource, too:

I made this soup last night and it is so FREAKIN good I just have to share the recipe:
3 Chicken breasts
garlic, cumin
low sodium chicken broth
1 can diced tomatoes
1 can chopped green chiles
Sautee the chicken with the garlic and cumin til no longer pink. Shred it into bite sized pieces. Remove from pan, then add tomatoes and chiles (while the pan still has all the cumin, garlic in it)and cook it until it reduces.
Put chicken, tomatoes and chiles in a pot with the broth. Simmer until hot. Garnish with cilantro and green onions. YOu can add corn to the soup for your carb. or serve it with baked corn tortillas. I'm having left overs for lunch today. Enjoy!

Hello everyone, I just started BFL on 02-27-05. First Question is Whey protien shake- I am currently using Optimum Nutrition- 100% Whey Protien
1 Scoop = 110 calories, Fat 1.5 g, Total Carbs 3g, Protien 23g. How many scoops to eaqual one of the BFL meals and what is good as far as a carb to mix wiht it?
Second Question-
Here is a sample of what I ate yesterday for my first day of BFL. I have been eating clean for about a week before I started, cutting out the coffee the sugar and my downfall (Coke a Cola). I really feel much better already.
400 pm-
Turkey Burrito- salsa, fat free sour cream, fat free cheese on a whole wheat soft tortilla
700 pm-
Chix salad(diced celery, green onion and banana pepper w/ fat free mayo on a half of a whole wheat pita
1000 pm-
Turkey Sausage(approx. 3oz) with stemed onions on a flour tortilla
030 am-
Another Turkey Burrito (listed at 400pm)
0430-
Chix salad on whole wheat tortilla
0880-
5 egg whites + one yolk cooked in chicken broth with about a cup of whole wheat pasta and chinese hot sauce.
I have a culinary degree so any suggestions or menus whould help. I don't know if I'm eating too much. I know you probably think there is alot of repetition but I work rotating 12 hour shifts, and usually prepare my meals my day off. Any suggetions would be greatly appreciated.
Today I woke up at 300pm and have the next three days off so I have to try to sqeeze my meals in before I go to bed, I don't want to stay up late to wait to eat
Note I posted this on Body for Lifers.com but got no response, guess they don't like cops, lol
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 02:32 PM
All that looks and sounds really yummy!
Yor 7pm and 4.30 meal, where's the protein? Need protein!
Your turkey burritos sound yummalicious!
As for your protein shake - 1-1.5 scoops is fine. I usually have mine with an apply, orange, yoghurt etc - the choice is really wide open since the shakes like the drink you have with your snack.
Welcome to the boards! Hope to see you around more.

I see the protein -- they're chicken salads!
And that's my favorite protein powder -- the 100% Whey from O.N. Good stuff. You can add any carb portion with it or two it. This morning I had a protein shake and a bowl of cereal. Sometimes I do like Tai and add fruit to the shake for my carb. I've added it to oatmeal, and vice versa!

I think it's very important if you eat before going to bed your body is working to digest the food thereby burning fat. I wake up sweaty every morning I know it sounds gross but I know I'm burning fuel as I sleep. I'ts always a light snack but enough.

That's pretty funny that your dad used to call you that, I had never heard it before ;)

I think the 6th meal is pretty important, although I don't know about that whole boiling seas thing. :P But Bill Phillips says as long as you are awake you need to eat every 2.5-3 hours to feed your metabolism. I'm usually still awake 3 hours after my dinner, so I eat the last meal. Last night, I ate a meal at 11:30 pm. And funny you should mention it -- I woke up sweating!
Body for Life Forum Message by Ann (108 posts) at 11:23 PM
Oh my God! Let's investigate this sweating thing! Every single night I end up ripping off my clothes because I'm drenched in sweat....and come to think of it, it's been since the BFLing began. ...hmm, interesting thought!

I was reading the Eating For Life board topic on whey protein when the following occured to me:
Given the rapid digestion of whey protein, am I slowing my weight loss by consuming whey protein at times other than immmediately following a workout?
My weight loss has slowed, and, now that I think about it, that slowdown is correlated with an increased consumption of whey protein (sometimes up to 80g/day, a couple of times even more).
I understand the differing digestion speed of casein vs whey proteins. I can't see cutting out shakes, since quite simply I was getting inadequate protein without them. However, if there is a causal relationship between the slowed weight loss and the excess consumption of whey protein, something needs to change.
Are there casein protein powders, and what are your thoughts on them? Brand recommendations would be helpful.
Thanks,
Dan
Body for Life Forum Message by Ann (108 posts) at 11:16 PM
Dan, maybe keep the whey, but not so much of it. If you're eating 80 grams of it a day, how much REAL food are you eating? How many total grams of protein are you getting each day?
I'm a whey user too, but just one shake per day. I shoot for 130 grams per day since I weigh about 120.
Body for Life Forum Message by Dan97526 (132 posts) at 11:42 PM
I plan 170-180g protein per day. On a daily caloric intake of 1700-1800 cal, 40% of that amounts to 680-720 calories. At 4cal/g, that works out.
It's pretty hard for me to get that from cottage cheese, chicken, and egg whites. I often have two shakes at 40g each. It's probably a bit overreliance on shakes rather than complete foods but I was having a heck of a time getting adequate protein before I started using the shakes.
I have seen noticeable improvement in muscle mass which I attribute to the additional protein, but as I said, the weightloss has slowed.

That's right, Sweaties (Not Sweeties)!
Someone just posted on another thread the idea that there may be a connection between night time metabolising and sweating....is anyone else waking up drenched in sweat? Does anyone know why this is happening? I'd love to think is because my body's a fat burning machine.

my HIIT in the pool consists of a full lap of side stroke, then a full lap of breast stroke followed by a full lap of freestyle. I repeat this pattern four times and then do a sidestroke lap for cool down. Took me a while to build up to this, though - when I started i was taking breaks every half lap.

Ok - I did it today - HIIT cardio on the cross trainer, and for the last two interval sets I put it up to level 7.

At my gym, they do different workouts with the bike; intervals, included! I usually replace one HIIT per week with a spinning class (that is, if I can get in the class - they fill up fast!). I think it is a great substitute for HIIT.. you definitely hit your AT several times during the class.
Also, I agree with (I think it was) Schelli - once you do it a few times, your arse stops hurting. I don't wear bike shorts, I don't use a gel seat...and for the first 3 times or so had pain in the sit bone area, but never get it any more unless I take a few week's break from it.
I LOVE spinning class!
Nancy

I find it helpful to avoid all that useless pedaling when spinning. It's easier on the bum, and at the end of the class I find that I'm not any further back than anyone else in the class...

It also depends on which leg is supporting the most of your weight--front leg or back leg. Like Tai said, balance your weight mainly on your front heel and back foot to work your butt and hams. I am a Lunge Queen and with each one I do, I pray that my thighs can hear me calling.
There are lunge variations too. Here are some to try:
- walking lunges (with or without weight)
- bench lunges: rest your back foot on a step or low bench. Be sure to watch your knees.
- single leg lunges. do one whole set on one leg at a time.
- alternating lunges. step forward once on each leg.
On all lunges be so carefully to protect your knees. Take a step forward first, then lower yourself down, don't lunge forward and lower at the same time.
I try to mix up my lunges to keep the next day burn a comin'. If I'm not sore, I'm not happy.

WOW,Ann! Thanks. I am definately sore, but not enough in my glutes. Will try again on Friday. Although my quads are KILLING me, because I did squats too. I hope I can do lunges on Friday.

Yes, I had shin splints at first and it got so bad, after teaching one of my classes, I thought i would not even make it to my car. I went to the dr the next day, he x rayed and said it was a stress fracture, Mainly from doing High Impact aerobics 2 to 3 times a day. Picture a chicken leg how the tiny pieves of splinted bone tears off the main bone, that's how the Dr explained it to me. I hurt enven when not walking, and felt cold, it was like pain with cold water running thru the lower leg. Terrible,
I had to keep Ice on it alot and after my classes and had to switch to Low Impact which i hated, I am a bounceee kind of person. but i hate too . It will heel with what we called the RICE Method, Rest, Ice, Compresion, and Elevation. If your symthom is Chronic like my was, you will need to use the Rice Method after every workout and stay clear of any weight bearing ex. and stick with non weight bearing ex until it is better. Switch from Running to cycling for a week or so and see if that helps

First off please know that I've already judged myself worse than anyone else could so there is nothing that can be said to me that I don't already know.
Okay here goes - I smoke and have not quit as of yet. I don't know if anyone else does or has but here's the question - do you experience or have you heard of leg muscles giving out before lungs during LBW or cardio? I've been a competitive skater before and smoking never bothered me; mind you was in great shape, not really a heavy smoker, younger etc. The first time I tried running a few years ago I noticed this - legs were giving out before I became winded. Couldn't understand when these muscles are the largest in your body and mine were strong then as they are now. Even though while I'm working them they almost become shaky.
So here's whats interesting - I was telling this to a friend at a party last weekend and he says to me "well you know why - its because you smoke and oxygen and circulation down to your legs is poor because you smoke - are your feet cold often?" Uh yes.....I have read so much and never ever have come across this before. It makes so much sense. Anyone ever heard of this?
And yet another huge reason to quit - God help me!!!!!!!

Got this off a web page... I had a few of those symptoms which are now all gone as I have not had a ciggy since new years!
Symptoms:
Signs that smoking is harming your health:
Shortness of breath, wheezing.
Fatigue.
Lasting or hacking cough.
Poor blood flow. (Cold hands and feet are a sign of it.)
Frequent bouts of throat and lung problems such as bronchitis.
Wrinkled skin (from poor blood flow).
just a few of the many reasons to quit.. trust me you will feel much better for it... If you are doing BFL you have to work with your body not against it...
Can I challenge you to quit?
:o)
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (22 posts) at 06:02 AM
Robyn - doubt it.
Just like deciding to do this challenge - decision just "hit me". With the smoking same thing it will "hit me". Don't know if this makes sense its just that if I have to force myself it will only work short term. I want it done for good. I know it will happen only thing is I don't know when. Maybe today??????
Body for Life Forum Message by bella2be (17 posts) at 08:24 AM
Well I am not a smoker so I am not sure, but I haven't heard anything beyond the poor circulation bit that others mentioned.
4 years ago when I was running distances and marathon training I definitely found that on my longest runs, my legs were tired long before I lost my breath.
So while your legs may just be tired...of course when you are ready to quit, go for it full force. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (285 posts) at 09:54 AM
I have heard of this before, but it usually affects the heavy smokers. I know that some quit smoking AND do BFL at same time, but it's tough. If you can't do both, don't. Do BFL, and you'll soon realize that you're getting so healthy that you'll begrudge the cancer sticks because they no longer "fit" the way you live! Good luck!!
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 01:52 PM
I'm trying as well Flower and it definately is NOT easy.
At the moment, I am only smoking 1/2 a cigarette each time I have one and saving the other half until later.
This is cutting me down a fair bit.
The hardest part for me is the fact BF smokes as well. He was out last night, and I only had 1/2 a smoke the entire time he was gone. In that time frame usually we would have about 4.
I have now found the source of the evil in my house lol - I just have to work on him as well. I honestly don't know if I can quit if he keeps going.

Hi all. I had a pretty miserable night sleeping. I kept waking up frequently tossing and turning. I'm not feeling well. My stomach keeps doing flips and last night I kept getting cramping high up in my stomach. I had fish last night and my first thought was maybe the fish was bad, but as of yet nothing has come up or out. Man I almost wish it would. Then I'd feel better I think. I don't think this is the flu. I have no other symptoms other than this nasty stomach.

Hey--do all of you who do weights at home have a weight bench? My arms are really quite weak, so I think I need to work out at home before I go to the gym! The gym doesn't have as low of weighs that I would like to start with. I'm starting with 2's, 3's, 5's, and 8's. Sad, I know. But, I was looking at the exercises and it looked like to me that i could just lay on my back on the floor and do them. Whatdya think? I was just trying to build up my strength before taking it to the gym.
Body for Life Forum Message by markharrill (81 posts) at 09:08 AM
I have seen some nice benches at Costco and Sam's around $55. Weights are generally cheap until you get to the higher weights.
We have been talking about putting a bench and weights in our basement for days it is hard to get to the gym.
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (523 posts) at 09:20 AM
You won't be able to do flyes or chest press without a weight bench.
We bought one at the Sports Authority for $99. It came with lat pull down, preacher curl pad and attachments for leg extensions and hamstring curls. Worth every penny let me tell you :)
Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (285 posts) at 09:49 AM
You might want to look for used benches in your area; they are ALWAYS listed in our newspaper classified section. Someone is always quitting a New Year's workout resolution right about now, and looking to clean out the basement. Their loss is your gain, and I've actually acquired an entire gym this way, because usually they throw a whole bunch of stuff in just to get it out of the house!

what has been all of your experiences with digital readings of weight and body fat percentages? i'm convinced my scale is off since i have checked lots of websites that do measurement percentage and they are way lower. I also think that it may be off on weight because i weigh on another digital scale and it always says four-6 pounds less. anyway...just wondering.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 09:24 AM
The only truly accurate method is the dunk tank :)
Digital scales are off and a lot of factors can affect them - such as time of day, if you have worked out, if you drank water, if you drank more water than normal, if your feet are clean or not, if you showered before get on them, etc etc etc.
Websites are not accurate either - just find one method to measure at the beginning of your challenge, and use that way to measure throughout it so you know if it is going down or not :)
Body for Life Forum Message by emilyuward (11 posts) at 09:29 AM
that sounds right. i weighed my self on my scale and it says 164.4. on my other scale it says 160.5. so i just stick to the one thats higher. anyway, it doesn't matter if it said 260---i still look the same!
Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (285 posts) at 09:46 AM
definitely depends upon which source you go to: they are all different, so stick with one and look for progress. I have done mybodycomp.com (says 24.9%), Omron hand analyzer (says 37%), and impulse-bought a scale/body fat thingie that I can't even use yet because I'm over 330 pounds. From what I've researched, seems the Omron thing is pretty well-regarded, but dunk tank definitely the best.

Is the ab ex where you crunch up and knees come to the chest and as you lower your shoulders and the feet come down still bent, well would that be the best for me to do, and how many!
Seems like I don't do enough to make it work, but I also feel like I do them 4-ever, I hate ab work How can I train abs without doing more and more and more every workout

Shannette, I do the Ab Boot Camp on cardio days, immediately after finishing the cardio workout. Just started - this is my second day – and I can still feel this morning’s workout. The website tells you all you the what, when, why and how’s.
I agree with Tai, the person that told me about boot camp, that this program really works the old abba dabbas pretty hard.
Body for Life Forum Message by Shannette22 (45 posts) at 04:22 PM
Okay, so you do it right after cardio. So, do you do any ab stuff on LBWO days?
Body for Life Forum Message by Shannette22 (45 posts) at 06:29 PM
Any answers for me?
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 06:38 PM
Nope, only do it on cardio day.
Body for Life Forum Message by Linne (19 posts) at 07:09 PM
Wait - I dont get it. So no more regular BFL ab work on LBWO days? If your doing ab boot camp on cardio days?
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 07:21 PM
yeah, if you do ab boot camp its 3 days a week on cardio days - why make it 4 or 5 lol ab boot camp is certainly hard and fun enough in itself :)

So I am going to the gym now and I printed off the sheets off of BFL to use and pick my upper and lower body workouts but I still feel like I am walking around not knowing what I am doing.
Can someone show me what your upper & lower body workouts are at the gym & what machines ? I know I am probably asking a lot here but I thought it was worth a shot.
And yes I am a chatter box today =)
Thanks!

I just came home from my LBWO...and boy am I wondering a few things.
First, am I going to be physically able to do HIIT tomorrow?? I am sore already. What do you do in that case, if you feel you cannot walk to the treadmill let alone hit your 10s?
Next, I know I can't do it every day for 12 weeks, but can I pop a few motrin to help me through my beginner aches?
And finally, I hit hamstrings, quads and calves, do I need to do "glutes" as a separate muscle group?
Thanks, I'm such a novice!
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 06:49 PM
Bella, just follow bfl, you will work your glutes with those exercises for all intensive purposes.
If you were training for a comp - then you might want to work them seperately, but you should be fine.
As for tomorrow. You will be sore. You will be stiff. You will not feel like doing HIIT. However, my advice? Do it anyway. It's hard to start with, but by working and warming up your muscles, youll get through the initial few weeks stiffness and sorness a lot quicker.
If you skip cardio everytime you get stiff or sore, then you'll constantly be missing them :)

Just a quick note to those interested that there is a new Body for Life for Women book coming out soon. It is by Dr. Pamela Peeke with a forward by Cindy Crawford.
I stumbled across a brief review of it in my wife's book newsletter. It's also described at Amazon.com. The cover is similar to the original, but has the author's picture, and the mini-sleeve photos of transformations are also there.
Might make a nice upcoming birthday or anniversary gift!

Annette,
You are proof that having babies does NOT, in any way, ruin your body forever. It's what you do with it after the kids come. And you've done amazing things!!!! You remind me of my aunt. She got over 200lbs (234) with her first pregnancy. She hated herself and felt really down. After her first daughter was about a year old, she made up her mind to DO something about it. She went back to school, got a degree in nutrition, got certified as a personal trainer and opened up her own gym. She now hangs out at around 14% bodyfat and cuts just below 10% for competitions. She has pictures of her after her first pregnancy (very large, especially being she's only 5'1") and then after she lost all the weight and found MUSCLES. She got pregnant again after getting in shape, but was determined to keep her weight under control. She ate well and exercised up until a week before the birth (she was still lifting, cardio, etc.) Labor was easy, recovery was easy and 3 months later, her six pack abs were back....God, do I hate her...LOL!!!!
Anyways, your daughters are as beautiful as their mommy and you are setting such a WONDERFUL example, especially in this day and age of overweight, obese children. Great job and you look amazing!!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (285 posts) at 08:11 AM
Monica, your mom is probably playing the role she thinks she needs to: helping you plan. People tend to plan based on previous experience, so she thinks that you getting down to a size 12 in time is not possible. You, on the other hand, are planning in a whole new way; not based on experience but upon A DREAM that you ARE going to achieve. I'm sure your mom only wants the best for you, so forgive her if she simply can't plan the way that YOU are learning to do.
Maybe one way to alleviate this stress is simply to tell her that YOU will take care of the dress when the time comes, and she can stick to the other aspects of the wedding. Either way, you are making such wonderful progress that you will be a beautiful bride regardless!
Rob
Body for Life Forum Message by Katy (67 posts) at 08:26 AM
Monica, everyone here is totally right. Every time you get something negative from your mom, get right back here IMMEDIATELY & log in!
You know, people following the BFL plan can make HUGE transformations where they have not been able to lose 10 pounds on anything else. You really kind of have to experience this to truly believe it. If you mom has tried dieting & failed, she probably thinks this is just another diet & simply CAN'T understand. Show her. Make her a believer. Then maybe she'll be wanting your help with her own transformation!
Katy
ps- Tai is right. Don't think about size when you get your dress. I wore a size 9 when I got married, but they had to order a size 18 dress for me. Be prepared for a larger number inside that particular dress...then rip it out & go shopping in the REAL world for all your size 12 clothes for your honeymoon! :)

Monica, I've always had a problem with discussing my weight with my dad. No matter what I do it's not good enough. If I tell him of my progress he only reminds me of how fat I still am. It got to the point where if he asked me about it I'd just say "It's going well" and leave it at that. I saw him this Thanksgiving after not seeing him in several months, and he was agog. Totally speechless. He was so surprised at how I looked and has not mentioned my weight since except to say "wow!". I'd just tell your mom you've got it covered and are making good progress and keep the details to yourself.
Body for Life Forum Message by charladee (37 posts) at 08:58 AM
Monica, I did a mini contest a while back with a few of my family members, we would all pitch in 50 bucks and the winner(most weight loss) would take all, but then they added an extra thing.....and they wanted everyone to bet on who would win, numbered everyone off and who ever got that right would win some money too.(most likely to win to least likely) Everyone put me last. That scarred me. I didn't realize that they thought that way about me. Unfortunately I let that dictate my results for so long, I think it still is in the back of my head.....I try to distance myself from the negative people in my life. BUT, words still hurt and makes is so very hard. BUt you...me...we all are stronger than we realize. Just do it. It will be hard, but like everyone says, it will empower you and those words won't mean anything. charla

12 is probably a little ambitious, but there's nothing wrong with ambition!! Dare to dream big. . . er . . . little?
A friend of mine made my wedding dress (size 22), so I don't know diddly about commercial wedding dress sizes.
Body for Life Forum Message by Monica (178 posts) at 02:49 PM

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (500 posts) at 03:04 PM
I say the following with all due respect:
Oh PUH-LEEEEEZE.
You are doing great, and as a lot of people have pointed out here, a number is just a number. If your ultimate goal is to be fit and healthy by the time your wedding rolls around, girl, you are on your way!
Body for Life Forum Message by Grace2bfit (71 posts) at 03:07 PM
Ok...this may sound pretty bizarre but you said that your mom was heavy also...maybe she's pretty unaware that she wants you to fail because if you succeed then that means that she could too.
It will no longer be an 'excuse'like...'it's in my genes' or 'I'm big-boned' or anything else.
Now it would be....'well if she can then I can' and maybe she just doesn't WANT to because she's justified her weight and actions for so long.
Keep going Monica...you are doing great. And as everyone else has said, you don't NEED her (or anyone else's) approval to improve yourself and your life.
If she can't get on board with you because your actions are convicting hers then I would say you need to step back from her IN LOVE, and find approval within yourself (oh, and here too!).
YOU GOOOO GIRL!
Body for Life Forum Message by Grace2bfit (71 posts) at 03:17 PM
ALSO...NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER forget WHY you're doing this!
I know you want to look stunning at your wedding and WOW every last person there and I have no doubt that you WILL. But what's going to sustain you AFTER that?
If mom will have her way...you'll be back into that 20 before your first anniversary. What's your deep motivation Monica?
You need to find what it is so that comments from people who don't understand don't hurt you so badly.
I'm sorry that this sounds so harsh and I don't mean to offend; but I just hate to see well-intending people completely derail others. You are doing great whether anyone else sees it or not! PLEASE keep it up!
Body for Life Forum Message by Monica (178 posts) at 03:21 PM
Did I derail someone? I didnt' mean to. I have tried BFL SO MANY TIMES and never got past week 3. The wedding is the only thing egging me on and keeping me going. After the weddding it will be so I can have healthy children but right now I can't even think about that. All I can think about is my damn wedding.

I'm just going to add one more thing to the advice everyone else has given you--I've sewn for 16 years, and I'll tell you now that the gaps in clothing sizes are a LOT smaller measurement-wise as you move down in size. It may feel like you are taking a while to move down in size when you are up in the plus range, but as you get closer to 14 and 12, you will be spending less and less time in any given size before going down again.
Stick with the program--you have a LOT of time before your wedding, and you would be surprised how quickly the changes show up as you peel away the pounds of fat.

Fit, you're right, the light cheeseheads has the lowest fat I've seen and plenty of protein! Unfortunately for me, I have to go to Walmart to get them because the grocery store I usually shop at doesn't carry them. I'm not a fan of Walmart, but I AM enough of a fan of cheese to go there anyway to get my cheesheads. :D

String cheese IS great. It packs easily for a snack on the road. And it's REAL food. I'm more comfortable having two lowfat string cheeses and an apple than any meal replacement. It's cheaper, too. Frigo also has a low fat string cheese.

Hi Tammy,
I'm in my first week of challenge III, so we'll be going through this together! Welcome to the Challenge!! We're about the same size - I'm 153, but an inch shorter - so perhaps we'll be smart to watch each other's progress!!
Anyhow, on to your questions.
1. I personally plan my meals out day by day - because I'm a fly by the seat of my pants sort of girl. I do however buy enough groceries on Sunday consisting of all the basics (chicken, eggs, tuna, veggies, etc). I'm sure it pays to plan - but I don't know what I'll feel like from one minute to the next.
2. It will take about a week or two of trial and error as far as weights go, especially if you've never lifted before. But you'll get the hang of it in no time.
3. It's never too late in the evening to eat. Like people say - every 3 hours thereabouts. I wake up really late sometimes, so I'll still be eating at midnight - and it never set me back (unless of couse its a huge pizza!!! only on freeday!).
Anyhow - can't wait to see your progress!!
Heather

nikki,
I would be very surprised if you were above 30% bodyfat. You are pretty muscular with just a little extra "padding". You look fairly solid. Have you tried having a professional use calipers or doing the hydrostatic method?
If you don't have those methods available, just disregard the actual number itself, but follow the downward trend (and it WILL move downward on BFL) to see how MUCH you are losing. That's what I did with my Tanita. It measured 5-7% higher than actual bodyfat on a consistent basis, but at least I could follow the numbers as they went down and know that I lost "X" amount of bodyfat, even if I wasn't sure of the actual number.

I think it must be a personal preference. I almost threw up when making my way through all the flavors of Myoplex. In the end, I went back to my trusty Designer Protein. I can't bring myself to gag Myoplex down, but I love my shakes made with Designer Protein. The RTD Myoplex aren't quite as bad, but I think it's because they are SO thin, I can gulp them down!!! LOL

I'm with 'Frugal'... Straight whey protein... Buy vanilla which is almost a blank canvas for adding any of your own flavor choices... Champion Nutrition mixes so easily too. Great in OJ, soy milk, never had it with water...
Whey way cheaper too ;-)
Boost it with yogurts to get yer carbs. Plus, I sometimes just inject it intravenously to not have to taste it at all! (kidding, of course). Although if could IV the eggs in the morning I would; damn I'm starting to hate eggs...

Karenna,
I don't think it's fair that just because you're so helpful, giving, and wildly successful at BFL that you should be so popular. Get off your "high horse" and put on a few pounds before you achieve even more success, which will only increase my maddening envy. Just because you're a great mom who manages to juggle motherhood and personal health so well doesn't mean you should have this many friends. I mean, really... get a grip, sister!

Welcome back on the right track, Cheetara! I love the ladies in my gym's child care facility, and so does my daughter. She was a bit nervous going at first, but now she definitely looks forward to it. My gym also has classes for the little ones, so she is learning to swim and getting in a good romp regularly, even when it's yucky outside (like today). I hope your daughter settles in nicely. It's a big relief knowing the bambini are happy and in good hands.

I wouldn't be offended, but I remember a few years ago, when the chatroom was open on the BFL website, there was a woman who was being stalked because of her pictures and she had her email addy posted. I guess it got pretty bad; they ended up finding out her phone number and calling her house. So you might want to be careful. I took my email addy off after getting yahoo instant messages from strange men who saw my profile pics and wanted to "get some pointers" or "make a new friend". I don't think so....LOL!
Be safe and do what you think is appropriate. My guess is if you are second guessing it, you are not 100% sure it's a good idea to post those pictures. I also think photoshopping the pic to make it more "internet savvy" is a great idea!

What about "Troy" Brad Pitt, I wouldn't mind seeing him in a speedo. Of course I was a swimmer all through high school, so speedo's don't shock me that much.

Melanie,
Belated thanks by the way.....your pics are what got my wife on board. She had gone cruisin through the profiles to find someone who had a body type that matched hers, and when she saw your first challenge B&A pics, she was fired up. She hadn't been that interested in going through it with me before, but your before pic looked a lot like she did and your after pic is apparently where she wants to be. Her being a part of this is what keeps me going.
So thanks!

Sweet Pea-I must respectfully disagree about Brad Pitt in a speedo-it would definitely be cool-for me, anyway. Although, Omar Epps would be better than Brad Pitt. Hmm, somehow I feel that we've veered slightly from the original subject.

Wow...Thanks, Knox...that gives me a bit of motivation to keep it up. I don't know why I've had such a hard time with completing a second challenge. It could be that when I did my first challenge, I didn't work and was only taking my prerequisites for nursing school. So I had LOTS of time to devote to my health.
Since then, it's been so hard keeping on a regular schedule. I'm so busy all the time with school, work, family, clinicals, husband's schedule....I kind of get lost. Tell your wife to keep at it and thank you for the kind words. I will try to have more B&A pics up by May...after I finally complete a second challenge!!

TJ go to the hussman website and look under the FAQ section. He addresses the photo prep question there. I would also highly recommend the airbrush tanning over the tanning booth. That's what I am going to do before my pics in 3 weeks. Good luck and can't wait to see them.

I'm amazed that you have already had such great success this challenge after having knee surgery! 9 lbs, 4% bf? That's dang sweet...
For tips on using the tanning lotion, check out swkigg's tips at http://skwigg.com/id19.html (or just go to http://skwigg.com/ and it is the LAST article under "Stuff to Read")
And one last hint about sunless tanning: As you are applying the lotion, don't lean over with your forearms resting on your newly lotioned legs, or you'll end up with two bright orange spots on your arms. Yeah, I did this twice in the last week til I finally realized what the deal was. I had been so "careful"!!
Body for Life Forum Message by Knox (55 posts) at 03:27 PM
Teej....man, you look great! Congrats!
My wife swears by Neutrogena tanning foam for that pre-season glow! You rub it in evenly and it doesn't streak or even make you look orange (as long as you don't over do it).
Just stay away from knees and elbows with that stuff. It concentrates in those areas for some reason and like Ash says, it just doesn't look natural.
(Also wash your palms afterward.....)

Congratulations, Udenia!!! I know exactly how that feels...we just had our first exams in my last semester of nursing school....a 90 on my Psych test and an 86 on the Med-Surg (which covered ALL cardiac and respiratory complications....talk about a LOT of information...30% of the exam was interpreting EKG's...AACCKK!!).
Anyways, congrats on the exam grade and good luck with BIOL 103 (what class is that exactly? We don't have that number of class in my school system).

Oh yes, biology - fun fun! Good for you, those exams can be brutal! I remember for my final the prof had a bunch of trays all around the room with different body parts- and I'm not talking liver and spleen, I mean like the 3rd cranial nerve and the teres minor YIKES! We had to walk around the room in a big line with a clip board and write down what was what! IT WAS HORRIBLE! I did pretty good, I only missed the vegas nerve and the mastoid process (forgot what it was called and said the mastin process! thanks teach! haha) Good luck in Bio 103!! Its a little easier once you've gotten through the first course! -Monica

Congrats, Udenia! My academic career mostly consisted of figuring out what I had to get on the final exam in order to pass. If it was lower than a 60, I'd go out and party instead of studying.

Its 4 am and I can't sleep AGAIN! My back is KILLING ME. I'm really starting to get annoyed. I injured my back over 2.5 years ago and I still can't get a full nights sleep. I wake up every few hours and now I can't even fall back to sleep because it hurts so bad. Cardio is gonna blow, ab boot camp even worse! This is NOT FAIR! I got hurt saving someone's life and now mine is ruined forever! WHAT THE HELL IS FAIR ABOUT THAT! I've been to every friggin kind of doctor in the book, chiropractor, back specialist, physical therapist, accupressure, accupuncture, massage therapist, holistic healer, WHAT IS LEFT!? I don't have insurance for it because the damn worker's comp say I'm lying about my pain because x-ray's and MRI's didn't show anything. HOW CAN IT NOT SHOW ANYTHING??!! I'm not making this crap up you friggin doctors, my back hurts like hell!
I'm glad I started BFL because the pain is less frequent but man when it hurts, it kills. I don't know anyone else with a back injury but if any of you guys know, please tell me. IS THIS FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE??!! : (

Monica -
I did injure my back....in an exercise class! It was a boot camp type of thing and we were having races (sprinting) and I was kicking butt and had to stop really fast to avoid hitting a weight rack, turned quickly and just killed my right lower back. It took a while for it to get back to normal, and quite frankly has never been the same and gets easily re-injured (although not to the degree of the first injury). I have found that the better shape I get it, the better it is. I make sure to do lower back exercises regularly and if it starts to bother me, I know that I have been forgetting to add in those exercises...after a week or so of concentrated work, it gets to feeling better. I think the more weight you lose, the better it will be. Did the physical therapist give you any exercises to do? If so, be diligent with them. I am sorry it is keeping you awake...oh, have you tried any anti-inflammatories? I know many are staying away from them due to recent news stories, but I occasionally use them if I am really in need. 2 Aleve is equivalent to one prescription strength anti-inflammatory.
Hope it gets better and you get some rest!
Nancy

I had a friend who actually broke his back in a sky diving accident something went wrong with his shuit and he hit the ground, although he never severed his spinal cord he still couldnt walk properly for a long time afterwards... once he was healed he went for a type of massage therapy which might be worth investigating, it was a course of treatments over a 1 year period and it was Deep Facial Tissue Massage and Posture realignment.. the amazing thing was is that he used to do ballet for years and you know how ballerinas all walk with the feet facing out well after this course of massage treatment he no longer even walked like a ballerina... and his back is perfectly fine now...
and I once fell quite hard and hurt my back and occasionally Ill sleep funny or do somethimg which will render me immobile I will take an anti-inflammatory for a couple of days and if that doesnt help I will see the chiropractor which will sort out the problem within a few days... but it always seems to come back although not frequently when it does its also very painful... there are back exercises you can do to strengthen you back to help relieve back pain.. I will see if I can find them again as I did print them out for myself and my own back pain... If I can find them I will email them to you...

Monica, I hurt my back 4 yrs ago shoveling snow. I had the worse back pain. I tried everything from cortisone shots to being injected with pure alcohol (don't EVER do this) to deaden the nerve. After 6 months of chronic back pain, so many different anti-inflamatory meds and sleepless nights, I was finally diagnosed with a herniated disc in my thoracic spine, through MRI. The treatment was 2 doses of IV solumedrol (potent steroid) followed by medrol dose pack ( 6 days of tapering doses of Prednisone) and Vicodin every 4 hours around the clock for about 7 days straight before I had relief. I went to a neuro-surgeon. He said no lifting anything more than 5 lbs for 6 months to see if it would improve. Otherwise surgery was the only other option. This did help. Thank God. I occaisionally have pain now. Its very infrequent and when I get the pain I call my doctor and he prescribes me some Medrol dose pack again and makes sure I have enough Vicodin (which I no longer need anymore).
You said MRI was negative. Have you had a cat scan of your back? Sometimes a cat scan will show what MRI won't and vice versa.
Have you ever been on the Prednisone 6 day treatment? This really really helps me more than I can tell you. Before I finish the whole 6 days now the pain is gone. Maybe you can ask your doctor about this type of treatment. You have been every other route to try to get rid of this. At this point you have nothing to lose. Good luck girl. Keep me posted. I hope you feel better. Lisa

Weight can cause a lot of problems, back included :)

no, I got injured a little over 2 years ago catching an old woman from falling on the corner of a television stand. It yanked my Sacroilliac joints out of place and I've never been the same. I actually think BFL might be aggrivating it a little.

I remeber there being some thread relating to SAD (seasonal affective disorder). We recently moved to Illinois from California, where we had lived for 10 years. I don't remember this from last year, but I am at the point of feeling like I am going nuts because it is so darned cold and dreary and it feels like summer will NEVER come! I know some people don't believe in things like SAD, but for those of you who suffer from this, do you find that tanning in a bed helps? I wouldn't want to do it long term, but I need to find something to tame the beast inside and bring back my happy feelings. I know you can buy sunlamps, but aren't they really expensive? Anyway, I would like to hear some thoughts or opinions on this! Thanks!!
Kim

My wife and I were looking at hot tubs one day when the guy showed us a "body pod" designed for SAD sufferers. It works like a tanning bed but uses color and aromas to simulate spring/summer/fall. The best part: it was a measly $15,000! I mean, who can't afford that??
Body for Life Forum Message by Katy (67 posts) at 07:53 AM
Well, Rob, it costs less than my car...how many miles per gallon does it get? Katy

I was having some SAD symptoms about a month ago during a particularly rainy and overcast period. I went to the tanning bed a couple of times a week and noticed an improvement in my mood and outlook. I'd say to give it a try.:)

Yep - I remember the post you are referring to and I responded in that one too. I have been suffering from SAD big time this year. A couple weeks ago I started tanning once or twice a week. I feel SO much better. I say go for it. You know there are beds now that don't have the harmful rays and they won't burn you. They are called high-pressure something or other. They are a little expensive though.
Body for Life Forum Message by Knox (55 posts) at 12:44 PM
I think there's a definite correlation...
I used to have a great office with a picture window overlooking our city park. Then I got a promotion, got moved upstairs and now have what looks like a converted broom closet, on an inside hallway, with no windows and flourescent lighting. It's also almost completely soundproof. I mean, I don't know if it's raining, sunny or snowing when I leave in the evenings. By 2 pm each day I'm writing dang poetry in my head and by 4 I'm ready to kill myself.
Our custodian came by a couple of weeks ago and put in a couple of "Sunlight" bulbs, and I'll be danged if it didn't make a huge difference. I mean, I don't feel like I'm on Maui or anything, but the change in lighting made me at least downgrade from full blown sonnets to limericks in the afternoon.
I say, if you've got SAD, hit the tanning bed...quick!
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (522 posts) at 05:27 PM
I suffer from SAD, and tanning helps. But it also makes me feel kinda sick -- much like I'd imagine anything baked in an oven feels. :-)
Exercise helps but you're doing that, so try the tanning. I recommend a stand-up bed -- of the ones I've tried, that had the most postive effect on my mood.
Best wishes,
Karenna

I suffer from SAD, in fact I'm working up a pretty good bout of depression right now with all of this snow, but cannot tan. I am a redhead, and therefore any pigment I may have ever had in my skin was sucked out at birth and sent to a needy country. That means the joy of instant sunburn and more of a likelihood of skin cancer. So. I just... uh.. pray for sun? :D
