BTW Frugal, that is great that you got to meet Porter; was that at a book signing?
Body for Life Forum Message by FrugalMissM (49 posts) at 06:07 PM
Porter was originally from Orlando and the trainer and friend who helped him during his challenge, Eric Shrieves, still works in this area. The last time Porter was in town in late January, Eric asked him to speak at a seminar he was holding at the gym where Porter worked out all those years ago. :) It was originally just going to be for Eric's current clients, but he decided to open it up to the general public in the end.
I got to meet Porter and the 2002 1st runner up in the women's 40-49 age group Lynn Oglesby after the seminar. I have a big BFL challenge poster signed by Porter that I plan to stick up in my home gym when I actually manage to acquire a house and some gym equipment, LOL.

This is one of my FAVORITE desserts...so easy to make. I make several batches to keep in the refrigerator. Orange Jellow with pineapple is really, really good.
*********************************
Raylene's Jello
Here's a FANTASTIC snack I made up/adapted from others:
1 packet Sugar Free Jello - Your favorite flavor
2 cups low- or no-fat cottage cheese
1 serving of vanilla protein powder
1 can or about 2 servings of fresh fruit
Blend cottage cheese and protein powder together in the blender. While it blends, boil one cup of water and If your fruit is canned, drain and run under water to rinse off excess sugars. Divide the fruit between 4 containers (I use the glad throwaway containers - they are just the right size).
When water boils add it to jello and dissolve. Slowly add the jello to cottage cheese/protein powder mixture and let the blender run for about a minute.
Pour the cottage cheese mixture evenly between the 4 containers.
Chill for 4 or more hours. Add a dollop of Redi-whip to the top and enjoy (real whipped cream, come on - it's only 20 calories, 2g fat, less than 1 carb).
It's SO SO SO good and I can't even explain it. It's like mousse with little bits of nirvana in it. I do this with:
- Orange Jello & Mandarin Orange Slices
- Lime jello and crushed pineapple
- strawberry jello and peaches
- cranberry jello & fresh raspberries
For a real treat add 2/3 cups of strawberries to the cottage cheese mixture along with the jello and pour over fresh strawberries.
Nutritional Breakdown
About 160 calories 16g carbs, 16g protein, 3g fat.
Maybe try this in lieu of the pudding?

I'm just wondering how many fat grams everybody is shooting for each day. I'm 5'5", 150 lbs and trying to get down to about 135-140 and currently, I've been shooting for around 30g/day. But some days it seems like I've reached that by 3pm and I go over for the day. I'm just wondering if that number is too low and I should up it a little.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 02:25 PM
I am 5'2 - 127 currently, and aim for around 20 a day.
Body for Life Forum Message by beegee714 (127 posts) at 02:25 PM
Just wanted to add that a lot of my consumed fat comes from natural peanut butter, mixed nuts, string cheese, an occasional protein bar and breads. (Not all in one day though, at least not usually)
Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (124 posts) at 02:35 PM
I try to keep it below 30 gs, sometimes it will go as high as 34, so i am close,
No i would not step it up, stay at 30 or below, just plan your day a little more and watch the fat and carbs, the seek up on you
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 02:38 PM
Bars tend to be evil where it comes to fat. Some have up to 8 grams and if you have that as a meal once or twice a day - EEK 16 grams just from a little bar.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (500 posts) at 03:32 PM
I would say I eat about 40g of fat per day. Most of it good fat. But that comes out to just under 30% of my calories, which is what EFL calls for.
Body for Life Forum Message by personalizeabook (300 posts) at 03:45 PM
Tai-Kee: Myoplex Lite Caramel Apple Crisp has 4 grams of fat (which is not all that bad)..but some of them are a lot more then that.
I haven't really given the fat contents much thought. I try to eat as clean as possible, ...now I'm wondering if I should count my grams of fat??!??
Body for Life Forum Message by beegee714 (127 posts) at 03:54 PM
I usually try to stay away from the bars completely. I just buy a few in case I'm going to be out for the afternoon and want to stay on target. (and if I need a chocolate fix)

Mark, in general, as long as you are progressing towards your goals and you don’t find yourself agonized by hunger and cravings, you are doing the right things.
Since you are analyzing your intake, how about finding out how much saturated fats, sugars and fiber are you consuming? There might be some fine tuning that can help you achieve your goals.

Just my opinion but i would not eat so little because your body is going to go into starvation mode and hold on to every ounce of fat it can. That is what a trainer told me anyway. I also ready somewhere in the EfL book it said that the average woman should eat 1500 calories and if you are trying to build muscle (which burn tons of calories), eating that little is not going to cut it. I would not go under 1200 calories if i were you, i just do not see how eating that little is good for the body. Where in the world would you get your energy from. Hope i helped some.
Body for Life Forum Message by JohnA (295 posts) at 12:50 PM
wantagreatbody, I think a shake is half a meal. As said above, you better have some high glycimic carbs like dextrose (corn sugar) with the shake in order to make it more effective. So dextrose+whey shake = 1 meal.
I figured that a weight training session costs me 250 calories, so I replenish it with 250/4=62grams of dextrose which is roughly 12 tsp mixed in 20 oz water. With a dash of lemon it is a great lemonade for USD $0.40 - beats Gatorade.

It can actually enhance weight loss, even if it's minimal. Caffeine was one of the ingredients in the ECA stack that was so popular with fitness/bodybuilder professionals up until a few years ago (when ephedra was deemed "unsafe"). Of course, this is provided you aren't dumping a ton of sugar and cream in it....or relying on Starbucks to make your coffee...teehee!!

Coffee with no sugar (you can use splenda) is fine and skim milk only but Bill Phillips says that for every cup of coffee or diet soda you drink you have to drink an extra cup of water over and above your daily quota.

Now the question is, does coffee impact weight loss?
Body for Life Forum Message by Trish (2 posts) at 05:49 AM
I am on week 9 and I have continued to have my coffee every day. I have lost 17 pounds and 21 inches so I don't think it hurts the weight loss. I do drink my coffee black and I also drink a ton of water every day. I have much better cardio on the days I have my 2 cups first thing in the morning so I thing you can drink it as long as you don't add the fattening stuff to it and drink extra water.
Body for Life Forum Message by momofthreegirls (242 posts) at 07:28 AM
I cannot function without my coffee. I also drink it "straight". the nice thing about being a coffee addict is that when I started Kickstart, it didn't make me jittery at all, and actually, I didn't even need my coffee that morning. I love my coffee!!
Body for Life Forum Message by nlp1669 (121 posts) at 02:07 PM
Be sure to drink a glass of water to counteract (in a sense) the coffee.

I am glad that someone asked this question because i am new and i was wondering the same thing. I loooovvvveee coffe, could not live with out it. I guess is would make since to drink a cup of water for every cup of coffee you have. I will start doing that. Just my opinion, I do not see how caffiene can hinder weight loss. Everything i have ever read says it helps speed up weight loss but i do think to much is a bad thing though. Just my 2 cents.

A favorite breakfast of mine is 1/2 cup of Kashi GoLean Crunch with 1/2 cup of milk and a cup of Eggbeaters. The protein/carbs are equal at around 32g and it's VERY filling!! Plus, the Kashi has a LOT of fiber in it (probably the reason it fills me up for hours).
I would probably cut the banana, unless this is a meal you eat after lifting weights.

It doesn't appear to me that you are eating too much, as long as your portion sizes are right - if anything, I would say you need to add some veggies into your daily plan.

Body for Life Forum Message by Katy (67 posts) at 07:50 AM
Xaviermom, I was eating the same thing & was feeling the same way you are. It turned out that my portions were too large.
Proteins, such as chicken breast, should be roughly the size of the PALM of your hand. Most of the pieces I had were as big as my whole hand, but that's too much. I had to cut one in half.
Carbs, such as a potato should be the size of your clenched fist. Most potatoes are bigger than my fist, so I had to look for really small ones.
My husband makes fun of me for "clenching my fist at my dinner", but hey, it works!
Good luck!

One thing I noticed was that on your first meal, you have oatmeal and milk, which are both considered carbs, so you might want to pick one or the other. But, everything else looks fine-just do like Katy suggests and check your portions to make sure you're not going over.

Hey thanks for the respones everyone,, now I have a better idea of where to cut back on,,one being portion sizes,, I don't always do the clinch fist and palm thing I eyeball it most of the time so I will stop that,, and not adding the skim milk in the oatmeal will be alittle harder to swallow because I hate eating oatmeal cooked with just water but will try it sometimes.
Thanks again everyone

Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (77 posts) at 09:48 AM
I am about to start using it because there is only so much cottage cheese, eggs, and chix breast one can take in a lifetime. You know it's bad when you polish of a carton of cottage cheese easily in 2 days or less. And the egg's don't even get me started here! The Eating for Life has a lot of recipes also the bodyforlife.com has a lot of recipes as well.
Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (285 posts) at 10:11 AM
Me, too; without the powders, my protein is always too low
Body for Life Forum Message by JohnA (295 posts) at 12:20 PM
Whey protein is digested very quickly (30 min). What is not used converts to fat like unused carbs. There are other types of proteins like Egg Protein powders for moderate release and Casin for slow release. The Whey is better consumed after workout; Egg protein during the day and Casin in your last meal for the night.
You should try beans and brown rice. This is a whole protein combination that provides all the amino acids needed by the body, it is rich in fibers too. I have this for dinner.
Body for Life Forum Message by emilyuward (11 posts) at 01:38 PM

This is a total venting post & hopefully I'll cool down before 'HE" gets home...
I was given a gift at xmas of a personal chef service. After meeting with the Chef, he agrees to make dinners following the EFL program, even though the meals are for the entire family.
January's menu was perfect, Feb's menu my DH called the Chef & switched 1 meal to Jambalya, I was pissed but let it go.
For March - I approved the EFL menu. Then received another email from the Chef that says, "Revised Menu". I'm confused then shocked as I read that two of the five meals are Lousiana style Crab Cakes & Bone-in Pork Smothered in Gravy with Collard Greens! WTF!!!!
He is sabotaging me, using MY gift to make His favorite & unhealthy meals. It really makes me furious. This gift was for the days I didn't want to cook dinner & could just reheat healthy pre-cooked meals.
UGH< UGH< UGH!!!!! (Now breathing to regain composure.)
Whew...okay, I'm done. Still mad but it's out of my system. Ugh!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (500 posts) at 01:55 PM
I don't blame you for being mad! It's your gift! But I do hope you can calm down before he gets home so you can tell him sanely and rationally to quit it if he doesn't want to be beaten to death with a Lousiana Crab Cake. :D

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 01:56 PM
Ok - I do think you have a right to be a little peeved here.
He bought you a Christmas present, but is now using it for himself.
Maybe you need to sit down (calmly) with him and tell him that he is sabotaging your efforts here.
Ask him if he can revise or make suggestions for the monthly menu on your free days - that way he can get some things he likes - and you still stay sane.
And on another note..
Where they HELL do I get me one of those chefs? :D
Body for Life Forum Message by silvertalons33 (138 posts) at 03:22 PM
or you could just sit across the table from him eating a dry chicken breast with brown rice and some vegetables chocking down the water to make it more palletable. If that dosen't make him feel guilty nothing will

So for lunch today I have a yummy tuna salad. Usually it is very yummy. No problem there.
Today I bought lunch at a cafe and dropped it off for BF - he does not always get out and eat, so I like to make sure he's eating SOMETHING.
Today I picked him up this thai pork and shrimp stir fry with noodles.
Not BFl authorised, but definately better than normal take out.
OMG did it smell and look devine. I returned to work, stare at my Tuna salad while little tears drip into the baslamic vinegar in bitter disappointment. It just really does not appeal now.
However! In the back of my mind are the size 6 pants I am aiming for next. The goal of being able to wear my little red bikini for week 12 photos. Being able to see the muscle definition in my arms without flexing.. Seeing my thigh muscle run ALLLL the way along my leg instead of cellulite.
*chews on her tuna salad like a cow* It's really good... Reallly reallly...

Honestly, why don't you all just modify some Asian recipes to be BFL authorized? All it takes most of the time is replacing the sugar with Splenda and the oil with some cooking spray...and bake instead of deep fry.
Sheesh.
That's what I did through all of my challenges. Who can stand eating blah American health food staples all the time?
:P
There are at least half a dozen stir fry/Asian salad recipes in the 175 recipe file I posted here:
http://maggiewang.com/index.php?p=36
And this cookbook is a great resource, too:

I made this soup last night and it is so FREAKIN good I just have to share the recipe:
3 Chicken breasts
garlic, cumin
low sodium chicken broth
1 can diced tomatoes
1 can chopped green chiles
Sautee the chicken with the garlic and cumin til no longer pink. Shred it into bite sized pieces. Remove from pan, then add tomatoes and chiles (while the pan still has all the cumin, garlic in it)and cook it until it reduces.
Put chicken, tomatoes and chiles in a pot with the broth. Simmer until hot. Garnish with cilantro and green onions. YOu can add corn to the soup for your carb. or serve it with baked corn tortillas. I'm having left overs for lunch today. Enjoy!

Hello everyone, I just started BFL on 02-27-05. First Question is Whey protien shake- I am currently using Optimum Nutrition- 100% Whey Protien
1 Scoop = 110 calories, Fat 1.5 g, Total Carbs 3g, Protien 23g. How many scoops to eaqual one of the BFL meals and what is good as far as a carb to mix wiht it?
Second Question-
Here is a sample of what I ate yesterday for my first day of BFL. I have been eating clean for about a week before I started, cutting out the coffee the sugar and my downfall (Coke a Cola). I really feel much better already.
400 pm-
Turkey Burrito- salsa, fat free sour cream, fat free cheese on a whole wheat soft tortilla
700 pm-
Chix salad(diced celery, green onion and banana pepper w/ fat free mayo on a half of a whole wheat pita
1000 pm-
Turkey Sausage(approx. 3oz) with stemed onions on a flour tortilla
030 am-
Another Turkey Burrito (listed at 400pm)
0430-
Chix salad on whole wheat tortilla
0880-
5 egg whites + one yolk cooked in chicken broth with about a cup of whole wheat pasta and chinese hot sauce.
I have a culinary degree so any suggestions or menus whould help. I don't know if I'm eating too much. I know you probably think there is alot of repetition but I work rotating 12 hour shifts, and usually prepare my meals my day off. Any suggetions would be greatly appreciated.
Today I woke up at 300pm and have the next three days off so I have to try to sqeeze my meals in before I go to bed, I don't want to stay up late to wait to eat
Note I posted this on Body for Lifers.com but got no response, guess they don't like cops, lol
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 02:32 PM
All that looks and sounds really yummy!
Yor 7pm and 4.30 meal, where's the protein? Need protein!
Your turkey burritos sound yummalicious!
As for your protein shake - 1-1.5 scoops is fine. I usually have mine with an apply, orange, yoghurt etc - the choice is really wide open since the shakes like the drink you have with your snack.
Welcome to the boards! Hope to see you around more.

I see the protein -- they're chicken salads!
And that's my favorite protein powder -- the 100% Whey from O.N. Good stuff. You can add any carb portion with it or two it. This morning I had a protein shake and a bowl of cereal. Sometimes I do like Tai and add fruit to the shake for my carb. I've added it to oatmeal, and vice versa!

I think it's very important if you eat before going to bed your body is working to digest the food thereby burning fat. I wake up sweaty every morning I know it sounds gross but I know I'm burning fuel as I sleep. I'ts always a light snack but enough.

That's pretty funny that your dad used to call you that, I had never heard it before ;)

I think the 6th meal is pretty important, although I don't know about that whole boiling seas thing. :P But Bill Phillips says as long as you are awake you need to eat every 2.5-3 hours to feed your metabolism. I'm usually still awake 3 hours after my dinner, so I eat the last meal. Last night, I ate a meal at 11:30 pm. And funny you should mention it -- I woke up sweating!
Body for Life Forum Message by Ann (108 posts) at 11:23 PM
Oh my God! Let's investigate this sweating thing! Every single night I end up ripping off my clothes because I'm drenched in sweat....and come to think of it, it's been since the BFLing began. ...hmm, interesting thought!

I was reading the Eating For Life board topic on whey protein when the following occured to me:
Given the rapid digestion of whey protein, am I slowing my weight loss by consuming whey protein at times other than immmediately following a workout?
My weight loss has slowed, and, now that I think about it, that slowdown is correlated with an increased consumption of whey protein (sometimes up to 80g/day, a couple of times even more).
I understand the differing digestion speed of casein vs whey proteins. I can't see cutting out shakes, since quite simply I was getting inadequate protein without them. However, if there is a causal relationship between the slowed weight loss and the excess consumption of whey protein, something needs to change.
Are there casein protein powders, and what are your thoughts on them? Brand recommendations would be helpful.
Thanks,
Dan
Body for Life Forum Message by Ann (108 posts) at 11:16 PM
Dan, maybe keep the whey, but not so much of it. If you're eating 80 grams of it a day, how much REAL food are you eating? How many total grams of protein are you getting each day?
I'm a whey user too, but just one shake per day. I shoot for 130 grams per day since I weigh about 120.
Body for Life Forum Message by Dan97526 (132 posts) at 11:42 PM
I plan 170-180g protein per day. On a daily caloric intake of 1700-1800 cal, 40% of that amounts to 680-720 calories. At 4cal/g, that works out.
It's pretty hard for me to get that from cottage cheese, chicken, and egg whites. I often have two shakes at 40g each. It's probably a bit overreliance on shakes rather than complete foods but I was having a heck of a time getting adequate protein before I started using the shakes.
I have seen noticeable improvement in muscle mass which I attribute to the additional protein, but as I said, the weightloss has slowed.

That's right, Sweaties (Not Sweeties)!
Someone just posted on another thread the idea that there may be a connection between night time metabolising and sweating....is anyone else waking up drenched in sweat? Does anyone know why this is happening? I'd love to think is because my body's a fat burning machine.

my HIIT in the pool consists of a full lap of side stroke, then a full lap of breast stroke followed by a full lap of freestyle. I repeat this pattern four times and then do a sidestroke lap for cool down. Took me a while to build up to this, though - when I started i was taking breaks every half lap.

Ok - I did it today - HIIT cardio on the cross trainer, and for the last two interval sets I put it up to level 7.

At my gym, they do different workouts with the bike; intervals, included! I usually replace one HIIT per week with a spinning class (that is, if I can get in the class - they fill up fast!). I think it is a great substitute for HIIT.. you definitely hit your AT several times during the class.
Also, I agree with (I think it was) Schelli - once you do it a few times, your arse stops hurting. I don't wear bike shorts, I don't use a gel seat...and for the first 3 times or so had pain in the sit bone area, but never get it any more unless I take a few week's break from it.
I LOVE spinning class!
Nancy

I find it helpful to avoid all that useless pedaling when spinning. It's easier on the bum, and at the end of the class I find that I'm not any further back than anyone else in the class...

It also depends on which leg is supporting the most of your weight--front leg or back leg. Like Tai said, balance your weight mainly on your front heel and back foot to work your butt and hams. I am a Lunge Queen and with each one I do, I pray that my thighs can hear me calling.
There are lunge variations too. Here are some to try:
- walking lunges (with or without weight)
- bench lunges: rest your back foot on a step or low bench. Be sure to watch your knees.
- single leg lunges. do one whole set on one leg at a time.
- alternating lunges. step forward once on each leg.
On all lunges be so carefully to protect your knees. Take a step forward first, then lower yourself down, don't lunge forward and lower at the same time.
I try to mix up my lunges to keep the next day burn a comin'. If I'm not sore, I'm not happy.

WOW,Ann! Thanks. I am definately sore, but not enough in my glutes. Will try again on Friday. Although my quads are KILLING me, because I did squats too. I hope I can do lunges on Friday.

Yes, I had shin splints at first and it got so bad, after teaching one of my classes, I thought i would not even make it to my car. I went to the dr the next day, he x rayed and said it was a stress fracture, Mainly from doing High Impact aerobics 2 to 3 times a day. Picture a chicken leg how the tiny pieves of splinted bone tears off the main bone, that's how the Dr explained it to me. I hurt enven when not walking, and felt cold, it was like pain with cold water running thru the lower leg. Terrible,
I had to keep Ice on it alot and after my classes and had to switch to Low Impact which i hated, I am a bounceee kind of person. but i hate too . It will heel with what we called the RICE Method, Rest, Ice, Compresion, and Elevation. If your symthom is Chronic like my was, you will need to use the Rice Method after every workout and stay clear of any weight bearing ex. and stick with non weight bearing ex until it is better. Switch from Running to cycling for a week or so and see if that helps

First off please know that I've already judged myself worse than anyone else could so there is nothing that can be said to me that I don't already know.
Okay here goes - I smoke and have not quit as of yet. I don't know if anyone else does or has but here's the question - do you experience or have you heard of leg muscles giving out before lungs during LBW or cardio? I've been a competitive skater before and smoking never bothered me; mind you was in great shape, not really a heavy smoker, younger etc. The first time I tried running a few years ago I noticed this - legs were giving out before I became winded. Couldn't understand when these muscles are the largest in your body and mine were strong then as they are now. Even though while I'm working them they almost become shaky.
So here's whats interesting - I was telling this to a friend at a party last weekend and he says to me "well you know why - its because you smoke and oxygen and circulation down to your legs is poor because you smoke - are your feet cold often?" Uh yes.....I have read so much and never ever have come across this before. It makes so much sense. Anyone ever heard of this?
And yet another huge reason to quit - God help me!!!!!!!

Got this off a web page... I had a few of those symptoms which are now all gone as I have not had a ciggy since new years!
Symptoms:
Signs that smoking is harming your health:
Shortness of breath, wheezing.
Fatigue.
Lasting or hacking cough.
Poor blood flow. (Cold hands and feet are a sign of it.)
Frequent bouts of throat and lung problems such as bronchitis.
Wrinkled skin (from poor blood flow).
just a few of the many reasons to quit.. trust me you will feel much better for it... If you are doing BFL you have to work with your body not against it...
Can I challenge you to quit?
:o)
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (22 posts) at 06:02 AM
Robyn - doubt it.
Just like deciding to do this challenge - decision just "hit me". With the smoking same thing it will "hit me". Don't know if this makes sense its just that if I have to force myself it will only work short term. I want it done for good. I know it will happen only thing is I don't know when. Maybe today??????
Body for Life Forum Message by bella2be (17 posts) at 08:24 AM
Well I am not a smoker so I am not sure, but I haven't heard anything beyond the poor circulation bit that others mentioned.
4 years ago when I was running distances and marathon training I definitely found that on my longest runs, my legs were tired long before I lost my breath.
So while your legs may just be tired...of course when you are ready to quit, go for it full force. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (285 posts) at 09:54 AM
I have heard of this before, but it usually affects the heavy smokers. I know that some quit smoking AND do BFL at same time, but it's tough. If you can't do both, don't. Do BFL, and you'll soon realize that you're getting so healthy that you'll begrudge the cancer sticks because they no longer "fit" the way you live! Good luck!!
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 01:52 PM
I'm trying as well Flower and it definately is NOT easy.
At the moment, I am only smoking 1/2 a cigarette each time I have one and saving the other half until later.
This is cutting me down a fair bit.
The hardest part for me is the fact BF smokes as well. He was out last night, and I only had 1/2 a smoke the entire time he was gone. In that time frame usually we would have about 4.
I have now found the source of the evil in my house lol - I just have to work on him as well. I honestly don't know if I can quit if he keeps going.

Hi all. I had a pretty miserable night sleeping. I kept waking up frequently tossing and turning. I'm not feeling well. My stomach keeps doing flips and last night I kept getting cramping high up in my stomach. I had fish last night and my first thought was maybe the fish was bad, but as of yet nothing has come up or out. Man I almost wish it would. Then I'd feel better I think. I don't think this is the flu. I have no other symptoms other than this nasty stomach.

Hey--do all of you who do weights at home have a weight bench? My arms are really quite weak, so I think I need to work out at home before I go to the gym! The gym doesn't have as low of weighs that I would like to start with. I'm starting with 2's, 3's, 5's, and 8's. Sad, I know. But, I was looking at the exercises and it looked like to me that i could just lay on my back on the floor and do them. Whatdya think? I was just trying to build up my strength before taking it to the gym.
Body for Life Forum Message by markharrill (81 posts) at 09:08 AM
I have seen some nice benches at Costco and Sam's around $55. Weights are generally cheap until you get to the higher weights.
We have been talking about putting a bench and weights in our basement for days it is hard to get to the gym.
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (523 posts) at 09:20 AM
You won't be able to do flyes or chest press without a weight bench.
We bought one at the Sports Authority for $99. It came with lat pull down, preacher curl pad and attachments for leg extensions and hamstring curls. Worth every penny let me tell you :)
Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (285 posts) at 09:49 AM
You might want to look for used benches in your area; they are ALWAYS listed in our newspaper classified section. Someone is always quitting a New Year's workout resolution right about now, and looking to clean out the basement. Their loss is your gain, and I've actually acquired an entire gym this way, because usually they throw a whole bunch of stuff in just to get it out of the house!

what has been all of your experiences with digital readings of weight and body fat percentages? i'm convinced my scale is off since i have checked lots of websites that do measurement percentage and they are way lower. I also think that it may be off on weight because i weigh on another digital scale and it always says four-6 pounds less. anyway...just wondering.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 09:24 AM
The only truly accurate method is the dunk tank :)
Digital scales are off and a lot of factors can affect them - such as time of day, if you have worked out, if you drank water, if you drank more water than normal, if your feet are clean or not, if you showered before get on them, etc etc etc.
Websites are not accurate either - just find one method to measure at the beginning of your challenge, and use that way to measure throughout it so you know if it is going down or not :)
Body for Life Forum Message by emilyuward (11 posts) at 09:29 AM
that sounds right. i weighed my self on my scale and it says 164.4. on my other scale it says 160.5. so i just stick to the one thats higher. anyway, it doesn't matter if it said 260---i still look the same!
Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (285 posts) at 09:46 AM
definitely depends upon which source you go to: they are all different, so stick with one and look for progress. I have done mybodycomp.com (says 24.9%), Omron hand analyzer (says 37%), and impulse-bought a scale/body fat thingie that I can't even use yet because I'm over 330 pounds. From what I've researched, seems the Omron thing is pretty well-regarded, but dunk tank definitely the best.

Is the ab ex where you crunch up and knees come to the chest and as you lower your shoulders and the feet come down still bent, well would that be the best for me to do, and how many!
Seems like I don't do enough to make it work, but I also feel like I do them 4-ever, I hate ab work How can I train abs without doing more and more and more every workout

Shannette, I do the Ab Boot Camp on cardio days, immediately after finishing the cardio workout. Just started - this is my second day – and I can still feel this morning’s workout. The website tells you all you the what, when, why and how’s.
I agree with Tai, the person that told me about boot camp, that this program really works the old abba dabbas pretty hard.
Body for Life Forum Message by Shannette22 (45 posts) at 04:22 PM
Okay, so you do it right after cardio. So, do you do any ab stuff on LBWO days?
Body for Life Forum Message by Shannette22 (45 posts) at 06:29 PM
Any answers for me?
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 06:38 PM
Nope, only do it on cardio day.
Body for Life Forum Message by Linne (19 posts) at 07:09 PM
Wait - I dont get it. So no more regular BFL ab work on LBWO days? If your doing ab boot camp on cardio days?
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 07:21 PM
yeah, if you do ab boot camp its 3 days a week on cardio days - why make it 4 or 5 lol ab boot camp is certainly hard and fun enough in itself :)

So I am going to the gym now and I printed off the sheets off of BFL to use and pick my upper and lower body workouts but I still feel like I am walking around not knowing what I am doing.
Can someone show me what your upper & lower body workouts are at the gym & what machines ? I know I am probably asking a lot here but I thought it was worth a shot.
And yes I am a chatter box today =)
Thanks!

I just came home from my LBWO...and boy am I wondering a few things.
First, am I going to be physically able to do HIIT tomorrow?? I am sore already. What do you do in that case, if you feel you cannot walk to the treadmill let alone hit your 10s?
Next, I know I can't do it every day for 12 weeks, but can I pop a few motrin to help me through my beginner aches?
And finally, I hit hamstrings, quads and calves, do I need to do "glutes" as a separate muscle group?
Thanks, I'm such a novice!
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 06:49 PM
Bella, just follow bfl, you will work your glutes with those exercises for all intensive purposes.
If you were training for a comp - then you might want to work them seperately, but you should be fine.
As for tomorrow. You will be sore. You will be stiff. You will not feel like doing HIIT. However, my advice? Do it anyway. It's hard to start with, but by working and warming up your muscles, youll get through the initial few weeks stiffness and sorness a lot quicker.
If you skip cardio everytime you get stiff or sore, then you'll constantly be missing them :)

Just a quick note to those interested that there is a new Body for Life for Women book coming out soon. It is by Dr. Pamela Peeke with a forward by Cindy Crawford.
I stumbled across a brief review of it in my wife's book newsletter. It's also described at Amazon.com. The cover is similar to the original, but has the author's picture, and the mini-sleeve photos of transformations are also there.
Might make a nice upcoming birthday or anniversary gift!

Annette,
You are proof that having babies does NOT, in any way, ruin your body forever. It's what you do with it after the kids come. And you've done amazing things!!!! You remind me of my aunt. She got over 200lbs (234) with her first pregnancy. She hated herself and felt really down. After her first daughter was about a year old, she made up her mind to DO something about it. She went back to school, got a degree in nutrition, got certified as a personal trainer and opened up her own gym. She now hangs out at around 14% bodyfat and cuts just below 10% for competitions. She has pictures of her after her first pregnancy (very large, especially being she's only 5'1") and then after she lost all the weight and found MUSCLES. She got pregnant again after getting in shape, but was determined to keep her weight under control. She ate well and exercised up until a week before the birth (she was still lifting, cardio, etc.) Labor was easy, recovery was easy and 3 months later, her six pack abs were back....God, do I hate her...LOL!!!!
Anyways, your daughters are as beautiful as their mommy and you are setting such a WONDERFUL example, especially in this day and age of overweight, obese children. Great job and you look amazing!!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (285 posts) at 08:11 AM
Monica, your mom is probably playing the role she thinks she needs to: helping you plan. People tend to plan based on previous experience, so she thinks that you getting down to a size 12 in time is not possible. You, on the other hand, are planning in a whole new way; not based on experience but upon A DREAM that you ARE going to achieve. I'm sure your mom only wants the best for you, so forgive her if she simply can't plan the way that YOU are learning to do.
Maybe one way to alleviate this stress is simply to tell her that YOU will take care of the dress when the time comes, and she can stick to the other aspects of the wedding. Either way, you are making such wonderful progress that you will be a beautiful bride regardless!
Rob
Body for Life Forum Message by Katy (67 posts) at 08:26 AM
Monica, everyone here is totally right. Every time you get something negative from your mom, get right back here IMMEDIATELY & log in!
You know, people following the BFL plan can make HUGE transformations where they have not been able to lose 10 pounds on anything else. You really kind of have to experience this to truly believe it. If you mom has tried dieting & failed, she probably thinks this is just another diet & simply CAN'T understand. Show her. Make her a believer. Then maybe she'll be wanting your help with her own transformation!
Katy
ps- Tai is right. Don't think about size when you get your dress. I wore a size 9 when I got married, but they had to order a size 18 dress for me. Be prepared for a larger number inside that particular dress...then rip it out & go shopping in the REAL world for all your size 12 clothes for your honeymoon! :)

Monica, I've always had a problem with discussing my weight with my dad. No matter what I do it's not good enough. If I tell him of my progress he only reminds me of how fat I still am. It got to the point where if he asked me about it I'd just say "It's going well" and leave it at that. I saw him this Thanksgiving after not seeing him in several months, and he was agog. Totally speechless. He was so surprised at how I looked and has not mentioned my weight since except to say "wow!". I'd just tell your mom you've got it covered and are making good progress and keep the details to yourself.
Body for Life Forum Message by charladee (37 posts) at 08:58 AM
Monica, I did a mini contest a while back with a few of my family members, we would all pitch in 50 bucks and the winner(most weight loss) would take all, but then they added an extra thing.....and they wanted everyone to bet on who would win, numbered everyone off and who ever got that right would win some money too.(most likely to win to least likely) Everyone put me last. That scarred me. I didn't realize that they thought that way about me. Unfortunately I let that dictate my results for so long, I think it still is in the back of my head.....I try to distance myself from the negative people in my life. BUT, words still hurt and makes is so very hard. BUt you...me...we all are stronger than we realize. Just do it. It will be hard, but like everyone says, it will empower you and those words won't mean anything. charla

12 is probably a little ambitious, but there's nothing wrong with ambition!! Dare to dream big. . . er . . . little?
A friend of mine made my wedding dress (size 22), so I don't know diddly about commercial wedding dress sizes.
Body for Life Forum Message by Monica (178 posts) at 02:49 PM

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (500 posts) at 03:04 PM
I say the following with all due respect:
Oh PUH-LEEEEEZE.
You are doing great, and as a lot of people have pointed out here, a number is just a number. If your ultimate goal is to be fit and healthy by the time your wedding rolls around, girl, you are on your way!
Body for Life Forum Message by Grace2bfit (71 posts) at 03:07 PM
Ok...this may sound pretty bizarre but you said that your mom was heavy also...maybe she's pretty unaware that she wants you to fail because if you succeed then that means that she could too.
It will no longer be an 'excuse'like...'it's in my genes' or 'I'm big-boned' or anything else.
Now it would be....'well if she can then I can' and maybe she just doesn't WANT to because she's justified her weight and actions for so long.
Keep going Monica...you are doing great. And as everyone else has said, you don't NEED her (or anyone else's) approval to improve yourself and your life.
If she can't get on board with you because your actions are convicting hers then I would say you need to step back from her IN LOVE, and find approval within yourself (oh, and here too!).
YOU GOOOO GIRL!
Body for Life Forum Message by Grace2bfit (71 posts) at 03:17 PM
ALSO...NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER forget WHY you're doing this!
I know you want to look stunning at your wedding and WOW every last person there and I have no doubt that you WILL. But what's going to sustain you AFTER that?
If mom will have her way...you'll be back into that 20 before your first anniversary. What's your deep motivation Monica?
You need to find what it is so that comments from people who don't understand don't hurt you so badly.
I'm sorry that this sounds so harsh and I don't mean to offend; but I just hate to see well-intending people completely derail others. You are doing great whether anyone else sees it or not! PLEASE keep it up!
Body for Life Forum Message by Monica (178 posts) at 03:21 PM
Did I derail someone? I didnt' mean to. I have tried BFL SO MANY TIMES and never got past week 3. The wedding is the only thing egging me on and keeping me going. After the weddding it will be so I can have healthy children but right now I can't even think about that. All I can think about is my damn wedding.

I'm just going to add one more thing to the advice everyone else has given you--I've sewn for 16 years, and I'll tell you now that the gaps in clothing sizes are a LOT smaller measurement-wise as you move down in size. It may feel like you are taking a while to move down in size when you are up in the plus range, but as you get closer to 14 and 12, you will be spending less and less time in any given size before going down again.
Stick with the program--you have a LOT of time before your wedding, and you would be surprised how quickly the changes show up as you peel away the pounds of fat.

Fit, you're right, the light cheeseheads has the lowest fat I've seen and plenty of protein! Unfortunately for me, I have to go to Walmart to get them because the grocery store I usually shop at doesn't carry them. I'm not a fan of Walmart, but I AM enough of a fan of cheese to go there anyway to get my cheesheads. :D

String cheese IS great. It packs easily for a snack on the road. And it's REAL food. I'm more comfortable having two lowfat string cheeses and an apple than any meal replacement. It's cheaper, too. Frigo also has a low fat string cheese.

Hi Tammy,
I'm in my first week of challenge III, so we'll be going through this together! Welcome to the Challenge!! We're about the same size - I'm 153, but an inch shorter - so perhaps we'll be smart to watch each other's progress!!
Anyhow, on to your questions.
1. I personally plan my meals out day by day - because I'm a fly by the seat of my pants sort of girl. I do however buy enough groceries on Sunday consisting of all the basics (chicken, eggs, tuna, veggies, etc). I'm sure it pays to plan - but I don't know what I'll feel like from one minute to the next.
2. It will take about a week or two of trial and error as far as weights go, especially if you've never lifted before. But you'll get the hang of it in no time.
3. It's never too late in the evening to eat. Like people say - every 3 hours thereabouts. I wake up really late sometimes, so I'll still be eating at midnight - and it never set me back (unless of couse its a huge pizza!!! only on freeday!).
Anyhow - can't wait to see your progress!!
Heather

nikki,
I would be very surprised if you were above 30% bodyfat. You are pretty muscular with just a little extra "padding". You look fairly solid. Have you tried having a professional use calipers or doing the hydrostatic method?
If you don't have those methods available, just disregard the actual number itself, but follow the downward trend (and it WILL move downward on BFL) to see how MUCH you are losing. That's what I did with my Tanita. It measured 5-7% higher than actual bodyfat on a consistent basis, but at least I could follow the numbers as they went down and know that I lost "X" amount of bodyfat, even if I wasn't sure of the actual number.

I think it must be a personal preference. I almost threw up when making my way through all the flavors of Myoplex. In the end, I went back to my trusty Designer Protein. I can't bring myself to gag Myoplex down, but I love my shakes made with Designer Protein. The RTD Myoplex aren't quite as bad, but I think it's because they are SO thin, I can gulp them down!!! LOL

I'm with 'Frugal'... Straight whey protein... Buy vanilla which is almost a blank canvas for adding any of your own flavor choices... Champion Nutrition mixes so easily too. Great in OJ, soy milk, never had it with water...
Whey way cheaper too ;-)
Boost it with yogurts to get yer carbs. Plus, I sometimes just inject it intravenously to not have to taste it at all! (kidding, of course). Although if could IV the eggs in the morning I would; damn I'm starting to hate eggs...

Karenna,
I don't think it's fair that just because you're so helpful, giving, and wildly successful at BFL that you should be so popular. Get off your "high horse" and put on a few pounds before you achieve even more success, which will only increase my maddening envy. Just because you're a great mom who manages to juggle motherhood and personal health so well doesn't mean you should have this many friends. I mean, really... get a grip, sister!

Welcome back on the right track, Cheetara! I love the ladies in my gym's child care facility, and so does my daughter. She was a bit nervous going at first, but now she definitely looks forward to it. My gym also has classes for the little ones, so she is learning to swim and getting in a good romp regularly, even when it's yucky outside (like today). I hope your daughter settles in nicely. It's a big relief knowing the bambini are happy and in good hands.

I wouldn't be offended, but I remember a few years ago, when the chatroom was open on the BFL website, there was a woman who was being stalked because of her pictures and she had her email addy posted. I guess it got pretty bad; they ended up finding out her phone number and calling her house. So you might want to be careful. I took my email addy off after getting yahoo instant messages from strange men who saw my profile pics and wanted to "get some pointers" or "make a new friend". I don't think so....LOL!
Be safe and do what you think is appropriate. My guess is if you are second guessing it, you are not 100% sure it's a good idea to post those pictures. I also think photoshopping the pic to make it more "internet savvy" is a great idea!

Melanie,
Belated thanks by the way.....your pics are what got my wife on board. She had gone cruisin through the profiles to find someone who had a body type that matched hers, and when she saw your first challenge B&A pics, she was fired up. She hadn't been that interested in going through it with me before, but your before pic looked a lot like she did and your after pic is apparently where she wants to be. Her being a part of this is what keeps me going.
So thanks!

Sweet Pea-I must respectfully disagree about Brad Pitt in a speedo-it would definitely be cool-for me, anyway. Although, Omar Epps would be better than Brad Pitt. Hmm, somehow I feel that we've veered slightly from the original subject.

Wow...Thanks, Knox...that gives me a bit of motivation to keep it up. I don't know why I've had such a hard time with completing a second challenge. It could be that when I did my first challenge, I didn't work and was only taking my prerequisites for nursing school. So I had LOTS of time to devote to my health.
Since then, it's been so hard keeping on a regular schedule. I'm so busy all the time with school, work, family, clinicals, husband's schedule....I kind of get lost. Tell your wife to keep at it and thank you for the kind words. I will try to have more B&A pics up by May...after I finally complete a second challenge!!

I'm amazed that you have already had such great success this challenge after having knee surgery! 9 lbs, 4% bf? That's dang sweet...
For tips on using the tanning lotion, check out swkigg's tips at http://skwigg.com/id19.html (or just go to http://skwigg.com/ and it is the LAST article under "Stuff to Read")
And one last hint about sunless tanning: As you are applying the lotion, don't lean over with your forearms resting on your newly lotioned legs, or you'll end up with two bright orange spots on your arms. Yeah, I did this twice in the last week til I finally realized what the deal was. I had been so "careful"!!

Teej....man, you look great! Congrats!
My wife swears by Neutrogena tanning foam for that pre-season glow! You rub it in evenly and it doesn't streak or even make you look orange (as long as you don't over do it).
Just stay away from knees and elbows with that stuff. It concentrates in those areas for some reason and like Ash says, it just doesn't look natural.
(Also wash your palms afterward.....)

We had to walk around the room in a big line with a clip board and write down what was what! IT WAS HORRIBLE! I did pretty good, I only missed the vegas nerve and the mastoid process (forgot what it was called and said the mastin process! thanks teach! haha) Good luck in Bio 103!! Its 4 am and I can't sleep AGAIN! My back is KILLING ME. I'm really starting to get annoyed. I injured my back over 2.5 years ago and I still can't get a full nights sleep. I wake up every few hours and now I can't even fall back to sleep because it hurts so bad. Cardio is gonna blow, ab boot camp even worse! This is NOT FAIR! I got hurt saving someone's life and now mine is ruined forever! WHAT THE HELL IS FAIR ABOUT THAT! I've been to every friggin kind of doctor in the book, chiropractor, back specialist, physical therapist, accupressure, accupuncture, massage therapist, holistic healer, WHAT IS LEFT!? I don't have insurance for it because the damn worker's comp say I'm lying about my pain because x-ray's and MRI's didn't show anything. HOW CAN IT NOT SHOW ANYTHING??!! I'm not making this crap up you friggin doctors, my back hurts like hell!
I'm glad I started BFL because the pain is less frequent but man when it hurts, it kills. I don't know anyone else with a back injury but if any of you guys know, please tell me. IS THIS FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE??!! : (

Monica -
I did injure my back....in an exercise class! It was a boot camp type of thing and we were having races (sprinting) and I was kicking butt and had to stop really fast to avoid hitting a weight rack, turned quickly and just killed my right lower back. It took a while for it to get back to normal, and quite frankly has never been the same and gets easily re-injured (although not to the degree of the first injury). I have found that the better shape I get it, the better it is. I make sure to do lower back exercises regularly and if it starts to bother me, I know that I have been forgetting to add in those exercises...after a week or so of concentrated work, it gets to feeling better. I think the more weight you lose, the better it will be. Did the physical therapist give you any exercises to do? If so, be diligent with them. I am sorry it is keeping you awake...oh, have you tried any anti-inflammatories? I know many are staying away from them due to recent news stories, but I occasionally use them if I am really in need. 2 Aleve is equivalent to one prescription strength anti-inflammatory.
Hope it gets better and you get some rest!
Nancy

I had a friend who actually broke his back in a sky diving accident something went wrong with his shuit and he hit the ground, although he never severed his spinal cord he still couldnt walk properly for a long time afterwards... once he was healed he went for a type of massage therapy which might be worth investigating, it was a course of treatments over a 1 year period and it was Deep Facial Tissue Massage and Posture realignment.. the amazing thing was is that he used to do ballet for years and you know how ballerinas all walk with the feet facing out well after this course of massage treatment he no longer even walked like a ballerina... and his back is perfectly fine now...
and I once fell quite hard and hurt my back and occasionally Ill sleep funny or do somethimg which will render me immobile I will take an anti-inflammatory for a couple of days and if that doesnt help I will see the chiropractor which will sort out the problem within a few days... but it always seems to come back although not frequently when it does its also very painful... there are back exercises you can do to strengthen you back to help relieve back pain.. I will see if I can find them again as I did print them out for myself and my own back pain... If I can find them I will email them to you...

Monica, I hurt my back 4 yrs ago shoveling snow. I had the worse back pain. I tried everything from cortisone shots to being injected with pure alcohol (don't EVER do this) to deaden the nerve. After 6 months of chronic back pain, so many different anti-inflamatory meds and sleepless nights, I was finally diagnosed with a herniated disc in my thoracic spine, through MRI. The treatment was 2 doses of IV solumedrol (potent steroid) followed by medrol dose pack ( 6 days of tapering doses of Prednisone) and Vicodin every 4 hours around the clock for about 7 days straight before I had relief. I went to a neuro-surgeon. He said no lifting anything more than 5 lbs for 6 months to see if it would improve. Otherwise surgery was the only other option. This did help. Thank God. I occaisionally have pain now. Its very infrequent and when I get the pain I call my doctor and he prescribes me some Medrol dose pack again and makes sure I have enough Vicodin (which I no longer need anymore).
You said MRI was negative. Have you had a cat scan of your back? Sometimes a cat scan will show what MRI won't and vice versa.
Have you ever been on the Prednisone 6 day treatment? This really really helps me more than I can tell you. Before I finish the whole 6 days now the pain is gone. Maybe you can ask your doctor about this type of treatment. You have been every other route to try to get rid of this. At this point you have nothing to lose. Good luck girl. Keep me posted. I hope you feel better. Lisa

I remeber there being some thread relating to SAD (seasonal affective disorder). We recently moved to Illinois from California, where we had lived for 10 years. I don't remember this from last year, but I am at the point of feeling like I am going nuts because it is so darned cold and dreary and it feels like summer will NEVER come! I know some people don't believe in things like SAD, but for those of you who suffer from this, do you find that tanning in a bed helps? I wouldn't want to do it long term, but I need to find something to tame the beast inside and bring back my happy feelings. I know you can buy sunlamps, but aren't they really expensive? Anyway, I would like to hear some thoughts or opinions on this! Thanks!!

My wife and I were looking at hot tubs one day when the guy showed us a "body pod" designed for SAD sufferers. It works like a tanning bed but uses color and aromas to simulate spring/summer/fall. The best part: it was a measly $15,000! I mean, who can't afford that??

Yep - I remember the post you are referring to and I responded in that one too. I have been suffering from SAD big time this year. A couple weeks ago I started tanning once or twice a week. I feel SO much better. I say go for it. You know there are beds now that don't have the harmful rays and they won't burn you. They are called high-pressure something or other. They are a little expensive though.
Body for Life Forum Message by Knox (55 posts) at 12:44 PM
I think there's a definite correlation...
I used to have a great office with a picture window overlooking our city park. Then I got a promotion, got moved upstairs and now have what looks like a converted broom closet, on an inside hallway, with no windows and flourescent lighting. It's also almost completely soundproof. I mean, I don't know if it's raining, sunny or snowing when I leave in the evenings. By 2 pm each day I'm writing dang poetry in my head and by 4 I'm ready to kill myself.
Our custodian came by a couple of weeks ago and put in a couple of "Sunlight" bulbs, and I'll be danged if it didn't make a huge difference. I mean, I don't feel like I'm on Maui or anything, but the change in lighting made me at least downgrade from full blown sonnets to limericks in the afternoon.
I say, if you've got SAD, hit the tanning bed...quick!
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (522 posts) at 05:27 PM
I suffer from SAD, and tanning helps. But it also makes me feel kinda sick -- much like I'd imagine anything baked in an oven feels. :-)
Exercise helps but you're doing that, so try the tanning. I recommend a stand-up bed -- of the ones I've tried, that had the most postive effect on my mood.
Best wishes,
Karenna

I suffer from SAD, in fact I'm working up a pretty good bout of depression right now with all of this snow, but cannot tan. I am a redhead, and therefore any pigment I may have ever had in my skin was sucked out at birth and sent to a needy country. That means the joy of instant sunburn and more of a likelihood of skin cancer. So. I just... uh.. pray for sun? :D

Instead of using a tanning bed, which does a lot of damage to the deep layers of your skin, try one of those light boxes. They are specifically for those suffering from SAD, cost around $200 (you can find them for less), and you only have to sit in front of one for around 30-60min a day, I think. I have read several articles and seen studies in the past few months on them so they should be available for sale.
This link is for a company in UK:
http://www.electronichealing.co.uk/products/sadlightbox.htm
This is a US company that has a lot of information on SAD and the treatment:
http://www.apollolight.com/golite.html
And here's another link that has products and info on SAD:
http://www.lighttherapyproducts.com/products.html
Hope this helps!
And a side note: the high pressure tanning beds don't do any less damage than regular ones. I hate how these places use what I would deem false advertising to get customers. A tan is a reaction to damage being done to your skin. So anything that gives you color is doing damage. The bad thing about tanning beds is that their rays penetrate MUCH deeper than those from the sun, so you are getting more damage in the deep layers of your skin (where melanoma loves to originate) than you would be from the sun, which is more responsible for Basal Cell and Squamous Carcinoma. I apologize if I'm coming across as being up on a soapbox. I just have done so much research on skin cancer and its causes; it infuriates me when I see these tanning places advertise "no damage", "safer than the sun", or "safe tanning beds". They all cause damage to some degree, some more than others.
Melanie =)

Without sunlight, your body does not produce a vitamin, i think vitain d. Anyway, without sunlight, your pieal gland shrinks. Depression is a sign of this. I live near the arctic. I don't see the sun for a few months, only what I see on TV.
Anyway, For years I have, as prescribed, to sit in fromt of a sunlamp daily for 20 minutes.
I now go to a tanning booth, 10 minutes once or twie a week. It helps ans has great effects, and cuts back on time.
However I am going to buy a table top sunlamp for next year and have it plugged in during breakfast so the whole amily benefits.
Up here, we have very high rates of suicide. It is the general thinking that it is SAD related.
an't wait for near 24 hour sunlight in the summer though!!! BBQing at midnight, with shades on. Will be thinking of all of you.

This morning I went outside at 8am B.C. (Before Coffee) and spent 30 minutes shoveling and shoveling and shoveling the 10-12" of snow that fell overnight. As much as I huffed and puffed and sweated, and as whupped as I feel right now, I think shoveling should count as HIIT. It did consume the time I had to do my HIIT before work.
What else should we be able to count as HIIT (but probably can't)?

OK, do you guys remember 2 weeks ago when I wrote my first post & asked about keeping BFL a secret? I had planned on doing this & not telling my husband because he's not supportive & actually tries to sabotage my efforts. I have changed my mind!
I weighed & measured last night & came out of the computer room literally leaping with joy. Kind of hard to hide that! DH asked me what the heck was up. I read him my losses for the first 2 weeks, hopping up & down the whole time:
11 1/2 pounds
4% fat (probably not even close, I use a scale)
1" chest
1/2" biceps
1" hips
1" thighs
1/2" calves
Then I told him that I didn't lose any in my waist & asked him "What am I gonna do about that?" Rather than the argument I expected he just said "Wow. I don't know. What do you think?" So I told him I wanted a stability ball. The $30 is probably not a big deal to most people, but my DH is so tight I could put a lump of coal up his butt & have a diamond in a week! He just said "OK, go get one. Good job!" Who is this guy & what has he done with my husband?!?

In this forum, the Body for LIFE Support, all I can say is that BFL works for EVERYONE for slimming down and for bulking up.
If you want the real answer, you'd have to ask it in
General Fitness and Diet Discussion forum.

He must eat more and lift heavy with good form and high volume. What is his size?
Body for Life Forum Message by Shannette22 (45 posts) at 08:52 AM
He's 6'1'' and about 177 lbs. His extra weight is around his tummy.
Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (190 posts) at 08:58 AM
He still needs to decrease his body fat percentage while increasing muscle. If you have not been to my web page you might get some ideas from me. www.miracle-fitness.com
Also you can email me sometime
Body for Life Forum Message by Tomster (1 posts) at 09:02 AM
I agree - eat more (but same basic approach as BfL - 6 meals a day crucial), lift heavy weights (but good form), but I would suggest low volume, and not too much cardio for weight gain phase. However, you mention that he is carrying extra weight around his tummy. If his body fat is not already quite low (say if it is above 15%) then he should do a fat loss phase first before bulking up, as you can't really lose fat and gain significant amounts of muscle at the same time. The fat loss demands cardio and calorie deficit, the muscle gain requires the opposite!
Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (285 posts) at 09:36 AM
JohnA, do you really feel that way? I only ask because I really respect your opinion based on the many helpful posts you've made on here, but you seemed to be "down" on it for a while? (or did I just misinterpret your posts?)
Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (187 posts) at 09:44 AM
I think JohnA is referring to the hand sized portions. Actually Bill Phillips gave different recommendations to people trying to gain, doubling carb and protein for the first meal or two of the day.
Body for Life Forum Message by jstone (355 posts) at 09:48 AM
eat BIG
lift BIG
get BIG
:)
Seriously, he can follow the BFL eating plan, only increase portions to "hand and a half, fist and a half". (to keep it simple)
If he has not really weight trained before then the BFL weight training (12-10-8-6-12) will build some muscle.
Cardio once or twice a week. No more than 20 minutes each though.
It is very tough to put on major muscle and lose fat at the same time. Not impossible. Alot of it is determined by his body-type, which I'm guessing is ectomorph .. meaning he is going to be a hard-gainer.
If he's really serious about getting big, bodybuilding.com is an excellent source for information.
Transforming your body is a constant learning process, and everyone's body can react different to varying methods. He needs to experiment with what has worked for others, learn from it, and then do what works for him.
Sorry, not an easy answer.

Good Morning all. Choices, life is full of them, and
all
choices have consequences. The question is, what are you going to
choose?
In september I chose to change my life, and my lifestyle. The
consequences were FABULOUS!! 4 sizes lost, countless inches and pounds
gone. Energy in abundance, my dry skin condition gone, and in winter
no
less!! My stomach problems, GONE!! With consequences like that, why
would I ever make another choice!! Fast forward to January...I made a
new
choice...to slack a little here, slip a little there...BAD CHOICE, with
guess what?? BAD CONSEQUENCES...I actually had the nerve to ask
myself,
"why suddenly am I not feeling as good as I have..."
hmmmmmmmmmmmm...
DUH!!!,/b>
My point is this...all our lives we have made choices...obviously alot of our choices have been bad, or we wouldn’t want to change so desperately. So I ask you...what are you gonna choose? Mediocrity?? or Greatness?? I for one am going to choose greatness, because I am worth it, and so are you!! Your day is going to be full of choices today, and tomorrow. Choose wisely!
Hugssssssssssssss

Christie,
There's something almost comforting in knowing that, in addition to getting good results for good choices, we get bad results for bad choices. It lets us know that there is balance, and we can control our own path.
If I ate terribly for three weeks and never gained a pound, that would be more disturbing to me than if I did so and gained 5 lbs.
I don't know if you've ever read Stephen Covey, but he makes a great point in one of his books about living your life by "design" rather than by "default". In other words, to choose (to the extent of our capabilities) how we view and respond to the world, rather than just constantly reacting to circmstances that "happen to us".
It sounds like you've got a handle on it and you've given us something to think about today, so thanks!

My dry skin problem is also gone! I'm so amazed -- this is the worst time of the year for it and I'm fine! I also noticed that I get this awesome color in my face after my morning workouts. I love the post-workout "glow!"

Excellent post :) it IS all about your choices.

You know, this applies to every single part of our life, and for me, doing BFL has magnified that -- my life and my health are what I make them. I can either whine about being fat and unhealthy (and broke), or I can choose to take control of my life and do something about it. This new attitude has an unfortunate side effect, though -- I have much less tolerance for whiners. =)
Thanks for your motivating post, Christie!

Hey good morning! Had a pretty good workout this morning, however last night was not fun. My mom and I got into another argument about my son. See, she stays home with my son and I pay all the bills, buy the food, etc, etc. Well I work a full time job and come home and try to spend some time with my son before I have to go and study, going to school is tough enough but now I have her telling me that I should be fitting in more.... I was a little upset with her because I am trying to get my degree before I get out of the Navy so I can provide a better life for my son and have a career when I get out and be able to buy a home. I guess she is concentrating on the now and not the future. My son is 2 1/2 right now so I honestly think he will not remember how much time I spend with him rather, that he remembers that he sees me everyday and I am not deployed to the Persian Gulf... I don't know what to do, does anyone have any options. I am trying to do the right thing.

I think you are doing the right thing. You are working hard and planning ahread for the future so you can give your son a good life.
Stick with it and keep up the hard work - the rewards will pay off!

Thank-you and I think my mom is saying that because she spends all day with him, I guess it gets nerve racking with a 2 year old. I need to set up a babysitter on the weekends to give us both a break and accomplish things around the house...take care, Udenia

Udenia, I finished my associate's degree in nursing when my kids were 6 and 3.5. I am currently working on my bachelor's degree and they are now 13.5 and 11 and it is so much harder now!!! They are involved in sports and I want to watch and do things with them. My point is that you are absolutely right when you say that he won't remember the time now. You also are very right about getting a sitter and giving both of you a break. How much longer do you have in college and navy?
Body for Life Forum Message by rmkkjb (76 posts) at 12:51 PM
Udenia - I think your doing the right thing - you are spending time with your son. I went back to school when my kids were 5 & 8. It was tough but now it was soooooooo worth it. When I finished I was able to get a good paying job (I even got to say I would only work 80%) and be there for their sports, activities, and school stuff. You'll be glad you've done it in hind sight. Just make sure you don't stop the scheduled time that you do have with your son now (however little or much it is) you'll be glad you had that too when your done.

I absolutely think you are doing the right thing! You are working on improving yourself and giving your son a good life. It might be hard for your mom to understand from her perspective, but you have to do what you feel in your heart is right. Good for you for taking so many steps to make your life exactly what you want it!

I truly admire you for what you are doing. It is not easy to balance everything, and I look forward to your posts to see how you are managing. These are your sons formative years and he will definitely remember that you took time out of your busy schedule every day to be with him. He will know that he is important to you and you are doing what is best for him now and in the future. Although it is hard now, it will definitely be worthwhile in the long run.
My mom keeps my 2YO when I travel and a week of him (even though he is in daycare all day) takes its toll on her. If a weekend babysitter can be arranged, it might benefit everyone.

O.K., so I found out that you can take a regular photograph to Wal-Mart and get them to put it on a cd. So, I did that and reloaded my before pic so that you can now actually see me in all my fat glory. Note-I didn't take side or back views of my before pic cause I didn't know that was required. I can't believe that picture!! I was FAT!! Not overweight, but freaking FAT!!! I am soooo glad that I am now moving towards a new me and am almost halfway there. LOOK AT MY FREAKING STOMACH!!!!!!!!! Shudder, shudder.

I got some free stuff at the gym last night when I signed up and I have vitamins, bars, shakes and 2 cookies but I don't think the stats are right. Can I only have these on a free day then ?
Bar: Oatmeal Raisin Bar
Cal - 150
Fat 3
carb 23
protein 9
Cookies & Cream bar:
Cal 220
fat 6
carb 30
prot. 12
Chocolate Peanut Butter
Cal 160
Fat 4
Carb 21
Prot. 10
My guess is they are to low in the protein, is there anyway to incorporate these ?
Here is the Cookies
Cal 160
Fat 5
Carb 18
prot. 12
MRP Shakes
Cal 220
Fat 2
Carb 30
Prot. 20
So what do you think ? I was wondering if I could eat something with more protein in it to up the protein numbers, I don't know.
Thanks!
Laura =)

they arent too low in protein - but one bar is an entire meal.
Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (752 posts) at 12:01 PM
Well, some of them are low in protein, but some aren't. It's important to balance out the carbs and protein, which most of those don't seem to do. But save them for free day? Girl, I hope you eat something better than that on free day-have some pizza!

Hi! I am sooo happy with my results so far. I have been doing so good sticking with my eating & exercise routines. I had soooo much temptation this wknd~ it was my sisters baby shower! cookies, cake, ice cream, chips, allllll kinds of goodies.......however, i planned ahead and brought tuna & yogurt!
I also woke up to home cooked breakfast that morning that i had to turn down. i felt horrible & was afraid of hurting my mom's feelings. She was like, oh crap, i forgot, and apologized over & over. I then had a myoplex!
Then, after the shower, we all went to denny's for dinner....yet another temptation! everyone was having cheeseburgers, fries, nachos, shakes.etc. it smelled sooooo good! but i stuck to my guns & had egg beaters & a pancake w/ warm strawberries (no syrup), aka the slim slam!
I knew this challenge wouldnt be easy, hence "challenge", but thanks to all the wonderful people on this site, you guys have really kept me motivated, inspired and ready for each and every new day! I love u all for that. Thanks soooo much again, and i wish the best for every one of you!!!!!
ps... cant wait til wk 4 so i can take my updated pics & post!

Absolutely cutting fat next 12, and trying to maintain the mass as much as possible.

Body for Life Forum Message by illini12 (39 posts) at 01:21 PM
Well I am finally out of week 1, and I stuck pretty close to what I should be eating, and did not miss a workout. I felt great all week, eating healthy and working out and everything. That's why I hate it when, come today, I measure/weigh/take pics, and all those good feelings disappear.(I was supposed to do all that yesterday, but didn't have time).
I didn't get NO results, but I hate to say that I am a little disappointed with the small results I got. My pics don't look any different, so I'm not going to post them this week (only 1 week difference anyway, I'll still post at 4 weeks). I know that real results take time, and don't misunderstand me here, I AM sticking the program out no matter what, I just needed to express a little frustration. I guess I am so used to going on low-carb/low-calorie diets that I was expecting the same kind of results (like 5 pounds in a week or something).
I am just feeling a little down about my results, that's all. I do feel stronger, and I can kind of see muscles in my arms, so I am excited about that. Maybe I will try to watch my food intake a little closer this week, and I'll add in some extra cardio if I can.
Anyway, thanks for reading if you did, and I am just going to work harder this week to make sure I'm not disappointed again next Monday!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (500 posts) at 01:24 PM
You really, really need to give this some more time. Not that I can't understand your disappointment, but there are so many healthy changes happening inside right now. It might help you if you read this:
http://hussman.org/fitness/index.htm#inside
Body for Life Forum Message by FattyMcFatterson (167 posts) at 01:28 PM
Just remember...with "low carb," that quick loss of five pounds is fat AND muscle. On BFL, you lose fat and gain muscle. Stick with it. You'll be very happy that you did.
Body for Life Forum Message by Knox (55 posts) at 01:36 PM
I agree with Hottie McHotterson....low carb is all about show; not a healthy lifestyle. I didn't notice any results after week one either, but now I'm starting to see muscle def, weight loss and even some hair regrowth on top of my head...
(Ok, I lied about that last one).
As everyone on here always says...you didn't get where you are now in a week, you aren't goin too far back the other way in a week, either.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (500 posts) at 01:38 PM
LOL Knox!!
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 01:38 PM
It's only one week! Give it time - the drastic changes don't happen until the end of the challenge.
Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (752 posts) at 01:40 PM
Speaking of hair regrowth-does anyone else have this problem? If it says "you can not post. you are not logged in", then there's a little log in button at the bottom, so I click on it and it takes me to this freaking "Hair Regrowth Forum". What's that all about?! Anyway, illini, let's put this in perspective. It's been ONE WEEK! Give it some time-even God took 7 days to create the world! Seriously, you'll see some results. Just maybe not this soon. Sometimes, I get discouraged because I'm losing a pound a week and I'd rather if it were 2 lbs. or 15 lbs., but ya know, we have to be realistic. So, I know that if you stick with this-you'll get there. You will!! So don't be discouraged, just use that for more motivation! Cheer up-it'll happen!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (500 posts) at 01:41 PM
I thought it just said "regrowth forum", I didn't notice the hair part, LOL! But it's really this forum, so I didn't sweat it.
Body for Life Forum Message by nikki (337 posts) at 01:49 PM
You're expecting results WAY too soon! It won't happen in a week, be patient...it'll happen.
Body for Life Forum Message by jstone (355 posts) at 01:53 PM
Illini12 ... first of all you should change your name to Illini28-0 .. yea babee!!
Anyway, as others have said ... patience. There is a post around here called "The Paper Towel Theory" you should read.
One remark on the low-carb-marketing scam ..... Denying your body carbs sends you into a state of ketosis ... the first thing the body does is empties itself of as much subcuteaceaus (spelling ?) water as possible. So that initial weight loss people experience on Atkins, etc. is all water weight. It's not fat.
Body for Life Forum Message by Mrs. 40-something (4 posts) at 01:53 PM
Another thing you can do is get your measurements taken. I have lost a few inches overall but not much is happening on the scale.
Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (82 posts) at 02:10 PM
Speaking of the paper towel theory, I thought I'd save you some time...
Here’s a little inspiration for those of you who are worried about not seeing any changes in your body so far. It’s called the “Paper Towel Theory,” and Bob White sent it to me in 2003. Let’s assume you go out and buy two rolls of paper towels, each with only 84 paper towels on it (one for each day of the challenge). You put one aside, and keep it for future reference (your “before” picture). The other one represents you (I’ll call your paper towel you “Ed”). The core represents the lean Ed. The towels represent the fat that is covering the lean Ed. For sake of argument, let’s say that Ed wants to lose 21 pounds of fat, so (84/21) each sheet represents a quarter-pound of fat lost. Let ’s also assume that Ed loses his fat equally during each day of the challenge. Each day during the first week, you tear a sheet off of Ed, representing the fat he has lost for the day. Next, you put Ed next to the full roll (“Big Al”) for comparison. No noticeable difference!!! Even at the end of the week! This can’t be working for me! But, being a good Ed, you continue to follow Body-for-LIFE. At the end of weeks two and three, you continue to compare Ed to Big Al, and still notice very little difference. That Bi11 Phi11lips MUST be joking! But Ed is determined! He works hard! Hitting his 10’s…eating his six daily meals. Three more weeks go by, the sheets peeling off day after day, before Ed gets up the courage to stand next to Big Al again. Holy Myoplex! Ed is skinny! OK, not skinny, but less huge!!! By the end of the 12-week Body-for-LIFE program, Ed is down to his lean dream, or somewhere near it. Ed is happy. We are happy. Big Al - well he’s not so happy. The lesson to be learned is that fat, like paper towels, comes off in sheets. When you are heavy, you are big around. And when you are big around, that fat is spread over a MUCH larger area - just like that outside towel sheet. The closer you get to the lean you, the more each lost pound of fat shows, because it is spread over a smaller area. While the outside sheet may only cover one layer of the roll, the inside sheet may go around 4 times. That last sheet looks like it gives you 4 times the results of the first sheet, but in reality, the results are the same - your perception is just different! And you’ll never see the inside, if you aren’t patient while the outside is coming off!

Thanks Ash. I love the paper towel theory.
Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (187 posts) at 02:15 PM
What were you doing before BFL? If starting the program meant an increase in calories for you, then you're very likely starting out in starvation mode, in which case your body needs a little time to adjust. The main thing is that you're feeling the difference in energy levels and strength, which means you are definitely making progress.
Body for Life Forum Message by Knox (55 posts) at 02:44 PM
Ash.....you're awesome. I'm going to be quoting the dang paper towel theory to everyone I know from now on.
Very, very cool....
Body for Life Forum Message by illini12 (39 posts) at 05:02 PM
I know I know I know... It's only one week. I understand that there aren't going to be big results, I was just expressing a little impatience (which I'm sure happens to everyone). I'm still working hard and there's no way I'm giving up, just venting a little about how I am aware that I had unintentionally high expectations and I felt stupid to be dissapointed but couldn't really help it.
I wasn't doing anything specific before BFL except trying to work out every couple days and not eat a lot of junk food. I'm sure that my body will catch up with me sooner or later, so I'm feeling less frustrated. Thanks for all the responses everyone, especially the paper towel theory! That is definitely a help to remember. :)

Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (285 posts) at 07:46 PM
The problem with the paper towel theory is that some of us buy in BULK, and so we have many rolls to get through. Why couldn't it be a small box of Kleenex?

Ok, so I realized something. When it comes to my workouts I do them to a "T". Now, my eating for life, needs some serious help.
When I started my first challenge, almost 9 months ago, I told my self that I would give up 3 things.
My 3 things:
Soda (coke is my fave)
White bread (carbs, mmmmm)
ALL SWEETS (need i say anything here)
I have stuck to this so far. But I let myself get away with way more than I should.
For example, PIZZA. I LOVE PIZZA. It is my weakness. I admit I have eaten it durring all my challenges. And when I say eat I mean, order a large cheese pizza - eat a large cheese pizza. UGH....I know, it is awful. I sometimes will eat a few slices and put it away. Soon after that it calls to me and I will eat it till it is gone. Yes, you can say I am addicted. This has to change, Pizza is standing in the way of my goals.
Therefore, before all of you I make this primse......
I, Monica Alcoser, promise myself not to eat pizza again for 14 weeks. (remainder of this challenge and challenge 4) If I do not succeed in this it will show my true character, as a quitter. And I am not a quitter!
Thanks for listening guys....keep a close eye on me. lol...
Body for Life Forum Message by beegee714 (127 posts) at 02:12 PM

So Monica Alcoser doesn't go insane :D
Or how about an authorized pizza meal!
1 small Whole wheat pita
bbq sauce
some turkey
onions
low fat cheese.
What a good yummy pizza thay is!

I've been told by a few people now that size 12 is not reasonable by October 8. Can someone PLEASE help me. What IS reasonable? I've been working this REALLY hard. Did cardio this morning until I almost puked (no joke) did ab boot camp so now laughing hurts. I've cleaned up my eating even more, dropped the cheese sticks for myoplex shakes. No more missing the 6th meal. Getting two servings of veggies in. Kicking my everloving butt in the gym. Getting to bed by 10 everynight (usually conk out by 9) Workout before I eat breakfast (a few exceptions when my fiancee has to work the opening shift) I don't know what more I can do. I'm feeling very discouraged and very scared. My goal is to lose 1.5 sizes in this last month of my first challange and end up a size 12 by the end of my 3rd challange. I started at a size 26 and am now somewhere between 22/20. I wanted to be an 18 when I ordered my wedding dress on April 5th. (My challange ends April 3rd) I feel like I'm doomed to be a fat ass bride.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 03:05 PM
Ok Monica :) Time for tough love.
STOP focusing on the numbers! You'll drive yourself crazy - you are driving yourself crazy.
What I would love for you to do is this.
a) take one day at a time. Focus on that day - eat clean and exercise that day.
b) move onto the next day.
c) Focus on your goals of being healthy and slim.
There is no magic number - no one can tell you what you will be, what you can get to.
If you focus too much on the 'what ifs' - you will lose the "I AMS!".
Youve already lost 4/6 sizes. GREAT focus on that positive aspect - don't keep dwelling on how far you have to go, don't linger on the negative.
Keep your focus positive and don't let yourself keep getting caught up constantly in the numbers.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (500 posts) at 03:08 PM
What's reasonable?
Being fit and healthy is reasonable.
Being a lot smaller than you are now is reasonable.
Being a size 12 in "normal" clothes is reasonable (although every manufacturer's 12 is not the same).
Feeling great about all the hard work you're doing instead of making yourself believe you're never working hard enough, that's reasonable too.
What's a number?? Girl, work your a$$ off like you have been and you will be gloriously happy on your wedding day, as you should be, and you will be SO proud to have accomplished everything you have!

If my wedding weren't coming so damn fast then I could do that but I really can't. You have NO IDEA how miserable my wedding will be if I'm not thin. I'll never hear the end of it, I'll be embarassed to even walk down the damn aisle. They will be laughing at me and critisizing me and telling me how "its such a shame because I have such a pretty face" I CAN"T TAKE IT, thats why I moved so far away because I thought I would never see them again. Now I have to fly back there and see them and I'm WAY fatter than I was when I left, even now that I've lost this weight, its not enough. I CAN"T look like a fat pig at my wedding. I CAN"T. I guess nobody knows my family, so nobody could really understand how terrible they are and how small they make me feel. I have no choice, I have to go back there so its either lose tons of weight or no wedding. I would call it off the week before if I had to.

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (500 posts) at 03:22 PM
Monica.
Look at the success you have had already. You have time for... what was it? Two more challenges after you finish this one?
There is NO WAY you are going to be a "fat pig" at your wedding.
And let me tell you something else. If your family is going to be so petty and mean and spiteful on your wedding day, what's to stop them from just picking something else to be mean about, even if you showed up a size 4 and bench pressed your mother?
You cannot do this for them. You can't. You have to do it for you. You have to focus on your success to this point and ALLOW it do keep you rolling through the challenges.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 03:42 PM
Monica - LISTEN to yourself.
If my wedding weren't coming so damn fast then I could do that but I really can't. You have NO IDEA how miserable my wedding will be if I'm not thin.
Okay. Your wedding will be miserable if you are not thin. One day. You are worry about one day that may NOT even happen.
IT WILL NOT EVEN HAPPEN THAT WAY IF YOU WORK HARD.
But! Instead of one day of possibly maybes, you are giving yourself 214 days of definate misery.
Your wedding is not about your weight. Your wedding is a celebration of love between you and your partner. Your wedding is declaring in front of family and friends how much you love each other and want to spend your lives together.
I can undestand you wanting to look good for your wedding, and you will! But don't let the what if's get in the way of enjoying yourself and the journey to your new life.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 03:45 PM

The amount of mental damage that your family has dumped on top of you is literally quite disgusting. I'm sorry if this is harsh but it's true. You need to stop listening to these destructive people in your life and listen to yourself. WHO SAID YOU CAN'T FIT INTO A SIZE 12 BY THEN? Was it a BFLer? somehow I doubt it, because we all know what this can do for you and what it has already done for you (and us). I really hope that the main reason you're doing this is for you, not them. THEY DON'T MATTER!!! or atleast thier opinions don't. I'm willing to bet you 10 bucks ( and that's like a billion dollars Canadian lol) that if you stick with BFL you will be SMALLER than a size 12 by then or if you're not you won't give a darn because you gave your all, heart and soul. Now stop this self destructive behaviour and pick yourself up follow BFL lose the weight and then stick your tongue out and go '''''thbbbbbbbbth'''' to your family. Good luck we're rooting for you.

Body for Life Forum Message by beegee714 (127 posts) at 03:52 PM
Well put Tai. Monica, no matter what your family says, or what your size is, it's your wedding day. Everyone is a princess on their wedding day, it's a rule. Concentrate on the fact that your fiance loves you no matter what, and on that day in October you two are going to look at each other in front of God and everyone and say it out loud. It is not going to matter if you are wearing a size 12 dress or not, and I'm just afraid that you are going to be so caught up in that number that you are going to forget what that day is really about.
I've been married for 7 years, and although I cherish that day, 2 children later all that is shown at our house of that day is 1 picture that is in my bedroom. What matters to me, is that 7 years later my hubby still wants to wake up next to me each and every morning.
Good luck on your future challenges and I really hope that you are able to take a deep breath and relax and enjoy the process a little more.

they are right monica... you can't be so hard on yourself. there are enough factors in this world that will try to stop you...YOU DON'T NEED TO BE ONE OF THOSE FACTORS... i too am getting married in jan of 06..i started my first and second challenge before i was engaged and the engagement is just extra motivation. if your man is anything like mine...all you need to be at the wedding is him...and it is only his opinion that will matter.. be excited about the life you are about to start. he will think you are beautiful no matter what size you are. my man is so supportive..i don't wanna lose weight for the wedding pictures or to prove anything to anyone. i want to be comfortable in my skin. i want to be healthy...and even though i am still 240 lbs i am doing better than 8 months ago when i was 297 lbs sitting on the couch watching tv.....i also wanna lose weight so once we decide to start a family i will be healthy enough to keep up...don't look to others and their reactions to make you happy...do it for YOU...

Aaaargh! Why will your wedding be miserable if you are not a size 12? Honey, I was a size 22 on my wedding day, and it was not miserable. My hair looked horrible, too. People were probably sighing to themselves about how overweight I had become, but I was marrying a man I loved who loved me.
It would be better you got married in a potato sack than you let this size thing get in the way of enjoying your special day.
I'll say again, it is impossible to tell what size you will be wearing, because everyone's body is different. After 10 months of losing weight (and I lost it more quickly than most in those 10 months) I went from a 26-28 to a 14 IN PANTS, but I do not carry my weight in my tushie. I was still an 18-20 in tops. It's just how I'm built. I don't know your body dynamics. Heck I didn't know MY body dynamics before. I don't know if you'll lose more down below or up above. For your dress size, probably the upper body will be the most critical. Ordering the dress is going to be a blind shot. I wish I could help you better on this, but there's really no saying.

Monica ...
I don't know who you're talking to, but you need to stop listening/talking to those people. You have a lot of positive support on here, but like I said earlier, it's about a 100-to-1 ratio of positive to negative just to even things out. If you let these negative words into your life, I don't know that we can keep up!
I think a lot of them are coming from your own head. As "fatty" said: GET OUTTA YOUR OWN WAY!
Body for Life Forum Message by nikki (337 posts) at 04:42 PM
go back and read what you wrote!!! How can you possibly say that you will be miserable on your wedding day? How does that make your fiance feel? It will be a fabulous day no matter if you're a size 12 or not!
Get away from those negative people and listen to us...people who know this program works. and people who will help you keep your chin up...
now drop and give me 20!

Tai hit it right on the head...who is this wedding for anyway? You and the love of your life, or your family?? Try this, read your post like you didn't write it, and how would you answer that? What would you say to me if I had posted those same thoughts????
I am sure you would put me in my place and lift me up...sooooo, take your own advice girl!!

Why does this have to be such an emotional roller coaster!? I can't stand it, I'm driving myself crazy. Probably you guys too.
Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (124 posts) at 03:25 PM
LOL ! , Monica, It doesn't have to be, just take it one step at a time, one day at a time, Say tonight I want to eat healthy, tomorrow when you wake up, say, today i'm going do my best, and if you do your best that's all you can ask for.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (500 posts) at 03:25 PM
Because it's hard to face that we've done this to ourselves and it's really really hard to undo.
Stop driving yourself crazy and go work out! =)

Its funny, I have no problem eating right or working out, I have a problem believing it will actually work.
Body for Life Forum Message by Knox (55 posts) at 03:33 PM
Monica,
As my mom always said "Time passes anyway". Think how goooood you are going to feel by fall. You will not only be close to your goal by then, but you'll be in control of your life, choosing what you're going to eat and how you are going to live....for the rest of your life.
Everyone on here, no matter how fit, started somewhere, some maybe in better shape physically than you are now, some maybe in worse shape. Either way, they prove that change is not only possible, but that physical change is transformative to so many other aspects of your life.
Reach out and grab it...you're going to have to sweat for it, but we'll all be right here beside you.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 03:33 PM

Maybe its just hard because I've never seen a woman who was as big as I was. I've never seen a woman of my size make BFL work. That makes it really hard. Mina Hobby and Pam Brown, were both between 50-70 pounds lighter than I was at the start. That makes me so sick.
Body for Life Forum Message by bride2be (43 posts) at 04:05 PM
there was a woman on here before the "crash" her name was shinyglogrl she was 330lbs and when she was done weighed less than 180lbs. IT IS POSSIBLE...but you have to work it and not let anything stop you.
Body for Life Forum Message by nikki (337 posts) at 04:15 PM
STOP questioning it! IT WORKS! Trust the program. Trust us, but most important...TRUST YOURSELF! You can do this. Get over it and do the program!

One of my favorite phrases...Get out of your own way!
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (522 posts) at 04:30 PM
Time passes anyway is the perfect slogan! Just keep doing, enjoy the post-workout endorphins. Revel in the stiff, sore muscles. Do not stop. Do not stop. Do not stop. Rinse, repeat.
Don't try to will your way from start to finish - it won't happen. Pretend that every day is its own goal, and that those little goals are the ONLY goals. Ignore the big goal, because it's overwhelming. I'm sure there's some inspirational-poster saying about mountain climbing that you could insert here.
You are doing it! Just don't stop.

Monica - in your 1st 7 weeks you have lost 15.5lbs and 25.25inches (please someone correct me if I'm wrong - I'm horrible at maths)!!! That is great work....and you still have 31 weeks til October. That means if you work as hard as you're working you will lose another 68lbs and 111 inches! That would take your weight to 189lbs! You cannot lose 111inches but you get the idea!! Keep at it, DO NOT lose focus on your goals but DO try to enjoy your progress otherwise your stressing may lead you back from where you came. You're better than those people who you say look down on you - remember that. Good luck and I can't wait to see a picture of you in your wedding dress!! :) Yx

If this is an emotional roller coaster, then scream loudly as you race down (always helps me on those things) and say, "Look ma; no hands!" on the way up... you know why people LIKE roller coasters? Because they provide that thrill, that jolt that lets you know you're alive. So it is with BFL; if you think that the comparison wasn't favorable, it just speaks to your attitude, not the reality. Embrace the ride, because it really is worth it!
(Legal Disclaimer: neither me nor my representatives imply that you should raise your hands at any time during the ride. Please keep your hands in the car at all times, and hold on to the bar. Watch your head as you step out. Thank you, and come again.)

Wow! These last 8 weeks have sure gone by fast. I've dropped 49lbs so far and almost 5 inches in the waist. I still have a long way to go but I'm certainly learning that BFL does work!
Thanks you for your support - it has helped a lot.
Now it's time to get that killer instinct for the last 4 weeks of this challenge!
Note: The 8 week mark was Sunday but I didn't get back from my trip to Texas until last night so the pictures are from today (8 wks + 2 days!). And I actually remembered to do the side and back photos!

Did you ever consider that? What excuses is left for me to explain why I can't work as hard as you, why I can't get up off my butt and commit like you have? How horribly selfish of you, to think only of yourself and the many people on here who you have inspired in the process... yet not of us lazy folk still struggling to get off the ground? I am at the beginning of week 8 and have been on an emotional rollercoaster just like some of you. One day I'll think OMG look at those muscles. The next day you've got to be kidding me who am I fooling such a long way to go.
Now for the best part, in eight weeks I've lost about 3 pounds. After cheat day I can be up as much as 3, 5, 7, 8 pounds but will loose it. Some people have commented boy you've really lost weight, so I tell them yeah a wopping 3 pounds. One day I got in the car and drove to the mall. I have a lot of Gap jeans (sometimes I fit a size 4 sometimes too small, at one time size 6 too tight). Walked straight to the ultra low rise, grabbed a size 2. In the change room they went on no problem.......SIZE 2!!!!!!
I may be impatient too but I am determined!!!!! So at the end of challenge 1 or 2 or 3 when I GO UNDER A SIZE ZERO THEN WHAT - KIDS CLOTHES (just kidding and a bit hopeful).
Thought I'd share that - all for a measely 3 pounds.
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (22 posts) at 06:04 PM
Oh - I think I should add that I have got to be the worst person for the scale. As an example I am so obsessed with that damn scale I weigh myself every day. Sometimes several times a day. I have even removed my clothing at my mother-in-laws only because I think her scale is more accurate. So to put in all this work, committment, determination, etc. only to loose 3 pounds it can be very discouraging to say the least.

O.K., since Gymbunny doesn't appear to have read the other thread, I'm just gonna ask some questions myself.
1) What's something bizarre/silly that you're afraid of?
2) What's the most moronic pickup line you've ever heard?
Now, I'll answer-
1) Moths
2) Don't anyone crap themselves, cause I'm gonna use
some language here-but it's a direct quote: "Let's go halves on a b@$tard"-from my beloved husband, actually. We got in a contest when we were dating.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (500 posts) at 08:47 PM
1) I don't know how bizarre this is, but I'm terrified of spiders. Makes me ill just to think about them.
2)Mmmmmm you smell good... is that your perfume, or your shampoo, or... just you? (My answer: it's my new deodorant -- do you like it?)

1) Having closet doors open at night. All closet doors must be closed. Yes I do check everyone of them before heading to bed!
2) Direct Quote: " I heard that you only date white guys - what's up with that?" And even more unbelievable, it came from my now husband & despite dissn' him for 6 mths after that comment, we still ended up together.

1) I can't have any part of my hand hanging over the bed...or any part of my legs or feet sticking out of the covers or over edge of bed. LOL...I USED to be afraid of swimming pool drains (the ones in the deep end especially). I had to get over that one when I starting diving competitively!
2)I've worked as a cocktail waitress in all kinds of bars, including strip clubs, so I've heard the gamut of pick up lines. These lines aren't silly but rather offensive and moronic. Language warning for the next paragraph or two.....I remember a guy telling me this joke: "What's a blonde? A redhead with all the fire f**ked outta her. So, darlin', what color will your hair be after a night with me???" I "accidentally" spilled his beer all over him when bringing a refill.
The other one I heard, when working at the strip club, was after I asked a gentleman (I use the term loosely) if he would like a cocktail. He replied, "How would you like a c*ck in your tail?". He was promptly escorted out by the men with the big muscles...LOL. Yeah, now you know WHY I don't serve drinks anymore!!!

I've made it to week 8 and i feel like i'm 'slipping'. I've had good results so far but i'm struggling to maintain the motivation & focus i had in the beginning...i don't want to quit now.
I've been feeling hungry (which i assume is the increase in muscle mass) so i changed my diet (cut out my w/w bread & cott. cheese & replaced it with 2 x string cheese & a peach) and i've noticed I WANT my portion sizes to be bigger....and because i'm getting hungry i'm nibbling frequently (and a bit of boredom) on my EAS Lite bars (only half at a time)....i don't feel like i've made much progress these last 2 weeks. I just had to run an errand at the shops and i walked past all the cakes...i really wanted one REALLY...but i didn't (phew!)
Also, i'm having to talk myself into my cardio instead of wanting to get it done and not giving it a second thought.
I'm heading away this weekend and will be staying in a hotel (yes, it has a gym!) and i've backed my RTD shakes & bars....but you know how you already have the stupid voice in your head suggesting it's okay to 'sway' with the diet a little...NOOOO...I DON'T WANT TO!!
As you can see, I'm suffering from frustraton...I'm not sure how to get my focus back - hence this message. I'm so close to the finish and want to go home strong and really push myself & achieve great results, but i think i may need a little 'push' from you guys...
Sincerely
BackFat

Aussie aussie aussie! Oi Oi Oi!
Aussies are champs - keep with it! Your pics are outstanding (good to see you put them up - has pp?)!!!
It sounds as though you are really limiting your food intake, have you looked at the average calories, fat, protein, carbs and fibre you are consuming in one day? If you are too restrictive everything just implodes - you need to keep this a sustainable program!
Otherwise, where are you going on holis? Hopefully out of the humidity (your a champ for exercising in that weather in the first place!). Take your pics with you for inspiration - is your hubby on the program, too? You can inspire each other if that is the case.
Keep it up, i bet you feel even better than you look eating properly!

Keep your goals with you.
Keep your before picture with you.
PLAN your meals on a blank menu and keep them with you.
Drink all your water and up your veggie intake.
You can do this!! You've already made it 8 weeks!!! That is so awesome. Keep up the good work and don't let your head mess you up!!!!!

I hit a wall in Week 7. I also made the decision to clean up my act and get back on track.
One thing that are really helping are mini-incentives. My mom and I are BFLing together and for each week that we meet our mini-goal, we add one service to our spa day--manicure, pedicure, facial, etc. Yes, very girly, but also very fun and motivating since we're doing it together and don't want to let each other down. It's also a non-food related incentive, which is something VERY new for me since my entire existance used to center around how great my next meal could be. Just a thought.
Hang in there and check in here often. These posts will keep you going! Here's a virtual hug and a kick in the pants since it sounds like you could use both right now.

I was wondering how accurate my body fat% is, I did it online at mybodycomp.com. Entering my measurements= 21.34% Body fat. Actually was a nice little tool that I found seaching the BFL tracker site. I mean how important is it to have it done professionally. I really dont have the money to waste on that. My grocery bill has gone up considerably when I started buying all the lean turkey, whole wheat, tuna etc...I took my week one pics, I tellyou what they looked much better in the small window of my digital camer, until I downloaded them on my cp (what a motivational tool.)
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 02:34 PM
Well they arent all that accurate- ok though!
What is important is fine one, and use it all the way through yoru challenge. That way you can at least work out and track how much you are losing.
IF you post your pictures, we might be able to guestimate if 21% is reasonable for you :)

tai kee...check my pics and see if you think 28 percent body fat sounds accurate for me....
Body for Life Forum Message by TopCop15 (8 posts) at 05:52 PM
I posted the pic's. Tai-Kee what do you use for BF% testing?
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1061 posts) at 06:46 PM
I use my body comp as well - now Im not pro by anymeans, but I think that would be pretty close give or take a few % TC.
Emily, your pic is REALLY hard to see. You don't look over 30% but do look a little above average so 28 is probably close give or take a few.
Body for Life Forum Message by emilyuward (11 posts) at 04:54 PM
not sure why i'm so excited about this....anyway, they are kind of small pics but you can see the fat....i suppose thats all that matters!

I have a pretty decent weight room set up in my garage. I have Power Blocks (5-80lbs) A squat rack, free standing bench, bench with lat pulldown & leg extention. I also have an olympic weight set with over 300#'s. Got tired of giving the gym the money when a year membership its about the same as the equip, plus it is real fast/easy to get there, no waiting in lines, no sweat on the benches, lol. I was wondering if anyone else works out at home and what type of results your were able to obtain. As far as cardio, I run outdoors and I do have a cycle ops attachment to make my bicycle a statioary bike (the only negative thing is there is no cool display like the gym. Any piece of equipt you think I need?

WOW! It sounds like you have a pretty cool setup! I wish I had that setup at home. I'd say you are pretty set :D

I worked out at home and had feel I had excellent results. I used a treadmill and dumbbells. (oh and once I had to use my kids while doing lower body)

I work out at home and have to agree with you that it's great not to have to wait or use sweaty benches. I think so far my results are good. I have a ways to go though. We have a treadmill and, like Tracy, I use that for my cardio.

It was a hard decision to put my pics on line. I actually thought of putting a Lone Ranger mask over my eyes using paint shop, LoL, but I though that would look pretty stupid. It is a real great motivator knowing everyone is viewing your pic's and progress

oops! My heading was sopose to be (Cheated already) Anyway, this is day 2 and i ate some stuff at first that i wasn't sopose to. Then later alot of stuff. I'm so upset with myself. This is the norm for me tho. I can't seem to stick to anything, but I don't want to quit. I want to do this so bad. Looking at the before and after pics on this site is so inspiring. I wanna be like you guys. Its gonna be tough, cause I'm the bigest procrastinator in the world. Plus I want perfection, and I'm not that. I'm gonna try persistance. Lets see how I do tomarrow. Oh, 1 more confession. I didn't do my cardio today. Very bad me.

OK, you don't want to quit? Then don't. This is FOR LIFE. Make a commitment to yourself as if you'd made a commitment to someone else. And then keep it. But focus on progress, not perfection. Make a plan, and stick to it. Plan your meals, make appointments for your workouts. And then, to the best of your ability, STICK WITH IT!
It's for life. You can do it. We're here to help you. :)

Speaking of Fish(salmon) oil-I was taking 1 tsp of pure alaskan fish oil every day. Now Ive switch to gels and not sure how many to take. The gels work better for my travel becuase the oil must be refridgerated and its messy. Im taking 1000 mg gels with 600 mg omega 3 oil. Is one a day enough?

Ive had similar problems, can never figure out why its doing what its doing. All I know is refresh on your browser works well. But try just going back to it in an hour or so. Log off, hit refresh when you log on first. then try again...
