Because of ongoing sleep problems due to chronic illness (pituitary failure) I usually don't get up until noon and so most of my workouts are in the afternoon. I've had great results but then I don't usually get to sleep before 2AM.

I eat at least one protein bar a day (Myoplex Lite)… I’m a little worried since a lot of people choose to stay away from them… wonder why? Are they bad for you? I also drink one protein shake day (Myoplex Lite)
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1084 posts) at 09:22 AM
I stay away from them personally because bars usually have a high fat content for what you really get.
I'd much rather have something natural and more filling. For me, that's just personal choice.
Body for Life Forum Message by jstone (375 posts) at 09:27 AM
I stay away from them due to the sugar content, and the fact that some of the myoplex bars taste so good, it would lead to binging. :)
They are nice , for convienece, in a pinch , like if you're traveling, vacation, etc.
Body for Life Forum Message by personalizeabook (315 posts) at 09:29 AM
To be completely honest, I'm not too crazy about the protein bars... I eat them for conveniency...
what are great alternatives to your in between meals (10:00am, 3:30pm, etc.) ? I can only eat so much cottage cheese *LOL*
Body for Life Forum Message by Grace2bfit (80 posts) at 09:33 AM
I have them on hand for 'just in case' instances.
When I first started I ate at least 1 per day, but since reading about the sugar and fat I've cut them out and gone to whole foods.
I do however still have a protein shake everyday for breakfast...Myloplex lite...the fat and sugar content isn't nearly as high and it's just enough for about 2.5 hours for me.
Body for Life Forum Message by jstone (375 posts) at 09:34 AM
my morning mid-meal, without fail , is cottage cheese and yogurt mixed together. I use the yoplait lowfat,, and try different flavors so i get some variety. the afternoon mid-meal is almost always a myoplex lite shake.
I try to keep the mindset with the mid meals as something I need to fuel my body, rather than thinking about variety or what tastes good.

I'm not a big fan of oatmeal and if I make it with water only it tastes like eating wet newspaper. This morning I tried it with nonfat milk and a little natural peanut butter, I was able the force down about half of the bowl,,, Yukkooo. Any suggestions or good recepies for oatmeal
Body for Life Forum Message by jstone (375 posts) at 09:43 AM
in addition to the natural pb, add a scoop of protein powder and a package a splenda. get's as thick is spackling, (lol) so you'll need to cook it with extra water.
Body for Life Forum Message by spartankf (110 posts) at 09:44 AM
This isn't exactly 100% BFL approved, but I am with you on the taste of plain oatmeal being gross!
Quaker now makes low sugar instant oatmeal packets. I have seen them in apples&cinnamon and maple/brown sugar (my favorite). They are 110-120 calories, 2 g fat, 3 g fiber, 24 g carb and only 4 g sugar. I add a favorite protein (canandian bacon or egg beaters) and have myself a meal.
I think the low sugar oatmeal tastes great and I don't feel bad about the little "cheat" of using instant - I have been pleased with my results so far.
Hope this helps!

I LOVE the chocolate protein powder/PB/splenda thing...but a nice change is SF applebutter...it's just sweet enough that you don't need to add anything else and it gives it a pretty good consistency
Body for Life Forum Message by LilRed (107 posts) at 10:05 AM
I can hardly get oatmeal down too! It's like prison gruel! I modified to one recipe that I really like for oatmeal. You need the old fashioned oats, not the quick oats. Boil a pot of water and then throw in your serving of oatmeal. Cook for only 1 minute and then pour the oatmeal into a strainer. This is just blanched oatmeal and it has substance to it. I mix with fruit and spleada. On free day, mix with bananas, pecans and brown sugar!! Yum!! You need a protein source added to this, so your serving of this should be the size of your carb. I like the vanilla low carb AdvantEdge shakes.

Well, I tried the egg whites and oatmeal this morning. You know, 2 egg whites and 1/2 C of oatmeal? I added raisins, cinnamon, and a packet of splenda. Normally, that's how I eat my oatmeal and I Love that stuff. This morning I thought I was going to puke. That crap was NASTY! I had to force it down cause that was all I had with me for breakfast. If anyone has any suggestions for the egg white/oatmeal barf, let me know.
Body for Life Forum Message by gemthing (3 posts) at 03:47 PM
I haven't got the balance quite right on this one yet, but I like the oatmeal/cottage cheese/egg white pancake. I've been trying 1/3 cup oats, whirl 'em in a blender to make sort of flour, add 1/3 cup of cottage cheese and 2 egg whites. Blend it up, stick it in a frying pan, flip when it gets kinda solid, and soon you've got a pancake-type thingy. Other people suggest putting sugar-free syrup on top. I take 1/2 cup frozen blueberries, nuke 'em, mix in a touch of cornstarch to get 'em thick and a touch of splenda for sweet and put that on top. It's a little carb-heavy, so I think next time I'll add more egg whites or a touch of protein powder.
Body for Life Forum Message by mail4tammy (16 posts) at 03:58 PM
I know what you mean...i really do not like it either but i eat it anyway. Just plain oatmeal with 1 packet of splenda and sprinkle it with a little cinnomon. I have 2 or 3 egg whites on the side. Anyway, i just force myself to eat it. If you every look at some of the things that bodybuilders eat...just gross. I do not see how they are eating some of that stuff for pleasure.
Body for Life Forum Message by Coloangel (24 posts) at 04:05 PM
I don't have this problem. I love eating oatmeal. I spray on a little I Can't Believe Its Not Butter spray, add some splenda and a dash cinnamon. Yummy.
Are you mixing your egg whites with your oatmeal? That does sound pretty yuck. I just eat a serving of scrambled egg beaters on the side.
I like this breakfast because it seems to keep me satisfied longer than some other things I eat. I hope you find a way to make it palatable for you!

Thanks for the advise. Catcandice- I found I also hate egg white omletes but what I do like ist to take the eggwhites cook then in a about 1.5-2 cups off chix broth ( like chinese egg drop soup at the end I put in sliced green onions. If you like spicy I put in some chinese hot sauce and I throw in some brown rice...Yummy I love it for breakfast especially on cold days.

Body for Life Forum Message by rmkkjb (79 posts) at 07:27 PM
gemthing - the pancake recipe is:
For one serving (which usually makes 3 small pancakes or 2 big pancakes) mix in your blender the following ingredients: 3 egg whites, 1/2 cottage cheese, 1/2 cup plain oatmeal, 1 tsp. vanilla & 2 Splenda/Equal packets. Cook them like normal pancakes. I use fat free butter spray on top w/sugar free/low calorie syrup.
You can double this and have it for 2 days.
TopCop - and the rest - if you can't stand oatmeal don't eat it. Start with putting it in things - some recipes use it instead of flour in the EFL book like the pancakes. You can make the pancakes and heat them up at work too.

The six meals you eat are supposed to have a serving of protein and a serving of carb, right? So if you have a low carb shake or nutrition bar, don't you still need to get a carb in to finish the meal?
Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (89 posts) at 01:23 PM
Well, technically they do have carbs in them just not as much. And the impact carbs. It can kinda be explained like if your having a sandwich and you only make it with one slice of bread than two.
Body for Life Forum Message by spartankf (110 posts) at 04:35 PM
I think you still need to add a carb - just make sure the total carbs are close to the same amount of total protein.
For example, my mid morning snack is almost always a low carb (2g) Advantage Cafe carmel drink and I add a small piece of fruit to that to make a complete meal.

YOu can work your abs every other day if you really wanted. But, you need to let your abs recover if you over work them you do the exact opposite and make the muscle smaller because it does not have time recoup and build. So take that into consideration. So yes you can do 3 x's per week just space it out.

Dan, I use 3 myoplex shakes a day and eat 3 whole food meals also. You may be cutting your calories a bit low and causing you metabolism to drop. Do you vary your intake week to week? I go 1700-1800 one week and 1900-2000 the next. This seems to work for me and I am dropping about 2lbs+ a week. The best way I have found to vary my intake is to modify my carbs.. I do 1/2 cup of brown rice per meal one week, and 3/4 to 1 cup the next per meal... Try uping your intake a bit and see if that works..
Body for Life Forum Message by JohnA (299 posts) at 12:11 PM
Dan,
I used to drink 5 servings of Whey a day. Didn’t gain any lean mass and didn’t lose any fat. I assume that protein consumption is related to body type. I’m an ectomorph trying to gain weight. I’m having 110g of protein a day, which is 0.6g per lb. I am not using any of the protein powders, because I get it all from normal food, like yogurt, peanut butter sandwiches, meat and beans. I’m gaining lean mass mostly through carbs and fats (50-20-30).
I read about Casin in www.Bodybuilding.com. You can find Casin products in their cyberstore. I bought Dextrose from them a week ago and they delivered as promised.
About weight loss slowdown. It’s hard to give you accurate answers without your detailed profile that shows the weight loss, measurements changes and your picture to determine your body type. Another thing that is missing is a detailed food plan with a breakdown of carbs, protein, fat, saturated fat, fiber and sugar. Calories count is not enough. You might be consuming mainly fast digesting food, which spikes insulin and turns to fat quickly. So instead of heaving a steady supply of nutrients in your blood, there are periods of too much followed by periods of not enough – but this is just a speculation. The detailed food plan is needed.

All he can say is don't be mad at me and the kids because you gave in and ate cookies! I have had absolutely no junk in the house at all. Everyone is eating very healthy with me since I am the homemaker and grocery shopper, but Dh complains about having chicken or turkey AGAIN! Can somebody please give me some advice on how to help my hubby convert and not be such a pain! I wish it would just click like it did with me and I have been harassing him everyday and night. You said that eventually it just "clicked" for you. Same thing happened with me...and I think thats the way it has to be. I don't think forcing him or trying to convert him is going to make him excited and motivated to do it along with you. He has to make the decision for himself.
I have a feeling though, once you are going strong in the challenge and he starts seeing how good you look...maybe that will be just the spark he needs.

I just can't believe he actually bought 6 boxes of COOKIES and brought them home! This morning when I got up to feed my 5 and 6 year olds before school they were already eating MILK AND COOKIES!! I was sooooo mad but he just doesn't get it. I just wish I could give him a motivation pill or something. I forgive him though because he just bought me a new home Gym and I absolutely love it. If he doesn't want what I'm fixing, he has 2 choices:
1. Take $5 and hit a drive thru or
2. HE can cook & I'll go to the gym & have a protein smoothie after my workout.
I tell him he does NOT want to mess with me. I'm sugar-deprived & know where the guns are.

As far as DH complaining about chicken or turkey again -- I know it's hard when you have kids to make things everyone will eat, but there are lots of options. Lean beef, fish, have you tried buffalo? I even made a balanced lasagna that was AWESOME, using ground turkey (yeah, it's turkey again, but you can do GREAT things with your favorite old recipes).
And here's a good argument for why he should take those cookies out of the house: does he want all the money he spent on the new home gym to just go to waste?

Anyone here work 12 hour shifs that rotate from days to nights every three weeks. Here's my problem tonight is my last night of and I have been eatng clean and following the diet all week. I will go to bed late tonight to adjust to night shift tomorrow night. Oh yeah by the way my sixth meal is sceduled for tonight at 1100 pm. Here is the prob- by 0800 tomorrow it will be time for me to eat(and I will be hungry) but I have to wait until around 500pm to eat so I get my six meals in while I work over night until 0700 hours, hope this makes sense. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

No, no..... you should eat every 2.5-3 hours while you are awake. It's not good to be up and starving. And it certainly won't help your workout efforts!
Body for Life Forum Message by rmkkjb (79 posts) at 07:54 PM
So you stay up for 24 hours from tomorrow morning at 8 until 7am Friday?
When do you work out in that time frame?
Body for Life Forum Message by TopCop15 (17 posts) at 08:58 PM
No I usually go to bed around 3-4 am then I will get up around 3pm and work out and prepare my meals for the 12 hour night shift which strarts at 7pm

FOLLOW-UP: Just got back from my trip to Texas last night. I ended up using a local gym that I found when I got there. I missed my workout on the 2 travel days but made the rest.
My biggest obstacle was resisting the pressure from my family to 'eat, drink and be merry'! They just couldn't understand how I could work out on an empty stomach! But they sure did like the results I've been getting!
I made some recipes from the EFL book and they were a big hit! I bought my Mom an exercise bike and showed her how to use it.
The best part of all was that when I flew into Texas on Feb 23 I weighed 263. But when I got back yesterday I weighed 256 !!! (7 lbs in a week!) Now that is what I call a successful trip!
Once again, thanks for your suggestions and ideas. I am now confident that I can travel and still follow my BFL program...

The "depth" of your step can change the focus of your lunge from quads to hams/glutes, too. Try stepping out farther and see where you feel it. Tai's "toes" suggestion is a great one.
For hams, try "straight-legged, straight-backed" deadlifts, either with dumbbells or a barbell. You can see an example on exrx.net. They rock!
It feels like a stretch and not a "lift," but it works that hamstring.

Just a suggestion, but how long has it been since you bought new shoes? Some of the causes of shin splints can be running on uneven surfaces, and bad shoes. If it's been a while on the shoes, I would consider buying a new pair.
Body for Life Forum Message by momofthreegirls (250 posts) at 04:56 PM
Beegee, I just bought a new pair of shoes! I bought some Asics, and I really like them. I have been having some problems with it, but it seemed to have been clearing up, then all of a sudden LOTS of pain, even two days after my lsat run. today I went and swam for 30 minutes, doing interval training. It was a really great workout! i am going to swim for the next too week since it is too cold to bike stiill (12 degrees!) and the only bike at teh gym is the one with the fan wheel and the moving handles! I am taking it very easy because I don't want to really hurt myself more than I already have. It is areal bummer though because I was doing so well with my running! Booohooo

I do ab bootcamp twice a week, making sure I space them out with at least 2-3 days rest in between.
Body for Life Forum Message by popeye (41 posts) at 10:02 AM
Your abs are like your calf muscles in that it takes ALOT to fry them. They both recover at an amazing rate and are capable of way more workload than you may think. You can work abs every day if you choose too without much danger of over training them. You need to consider that your core and calves are involved in almost everything you do during the day so don't be scared to hit both pretty hard.
Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (193 posts) at 10:15 AM
For abs to show you must have proper nutrition, proper cardio, and proper weight training. It takes time and effort
Body for Life Forum Message by JohnA (299 posts) at 10:16 AM
I would like to point to spot light to the fat layer that covers the abs. No matter how strong your abs are, you will not see the 6 packs unless you lose the fat. One can do abs boot camp forever, but the way to see the 6 packs is with diet and full body exercise.
Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (129 posts) at 11:48 AM
Iwhen I taught aerobics, I workout out alot, was 122 lbs 24%BF and looked real good, ( this was 17 years ago I'm talking about) but I never had a 6 pack, 4 pack not even a bottle neck,LOL
Tai told me I have to get the BF now to about 18% for the abs to show, Well I'm working on it~ Look out ya'll I'm aiming to be a foxy 51 year old, LOL, heee, haha!
Body for Life Forum Message by personalizeabook (315 posts) at 12:03 PM
fostermama:
In order to show your abs, you must lower your bodyfat down to 15% up to 18% - that's when your abs will start showing... you might need to lower it below 15% in order to trully show 6-pack abs.
Also, there's a lot of different exercises that you can do for your abs. The basics crunch, reverse crunch, side crunches are great, as long as you do them correctly and slow. Really concentrate on "squeezing" your muscles and feel the burn baby! *laugh*
Body for Life Forum Message by ptwob2 (38 posts) at 01:05 PM
I've done the ab boot camp and loved the results. However, I didn't fully understand the dynamics of working the abs until I read a book by Bill Phillips brother Shawn called ABSolution. See website: http://www.bestabs.com/
Shawn Phillips would agree with jstone, "ABs are built in the kitchen!"
I highly recommend that everyone read this book which you can probably find in your local library.
Cheers!
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (541 posts) at 06:31 PM
Momma, you will be a foxy 51-yr-old!
I've done one Ab bootcamp workout so far, and it was only two sets and improvised a bit 'cause I did it on my living room floor.
The fat has to go before you'll really see the ab definition you want. I still have a nice layer of tummy fat, but I have some ab definition. I don't think you have to be a "stick" to see them ('course, it depends on where you stash you fat, too). I do know that abs are muscles and will bulk up as you build them -- so until some fat goes, you might feel your tummy getting stronger more looking slightly more sticky-outty. But that might be more for guys.
I am a true believer in the stomach vaccuum exercises (part of the bootcamp). I HATE doing ab exercises, and have been a strictly crunches girl up until now, but I have big hopes that when I put the effort (and pain) into this bootcamp, it will show.
Sorry -- off the soapbox! :-)

I agree with momof3 - years ago when I was figure skating we had to do some extreme training and did get stiff and sore. Our only option was to work it off. Sometimes it was extreme pain. Knowing what was coming when we got on the ice we would spend more time stretching. Maybe try that - you'll notice you won't be able to at first but slowly your muscles will loosen up then start your cardio at a lower level and work up as you loosen. I say all this assuming you haven't pulled or torn something.
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (543 posts) at 10:54 AM
DO it. Don't skip it. I used to do that and I ended up missing 2-3 workouts a week. Not worth it. The first few minutes will suck but after that your muscles start to chill out and it makes them feel better. Stay strong :)
Body for Life Forum Message by bella2be (20 posts) at 11:00 AM
Ok ok, I did it. I did my HIIT this morning! And am proud of it. It was tough on the legs, but also, its only my second HIIT so far, and for some reason today what felt like a 9 on Sunday felt like a 10 today, it was really rough. But, I got through it!
Coming from a running background, its hard to understand that "less is more" when you are doing intense workouts like this, but, it does make it much eaier to actually do them knowing it is only 20 minutes!
Pass the MOtrin! :)

I was wrapping up on my last set of dips this morning, when my cat jumped on my lap out of nowhere scaring the begeebers out of me. I slipped and have pulled something in my tricep.
Now I can barely lift my arm. Damn cat! Guess I'll be taking it easy for a while. On a posibite note - it's lucky I only have cardio and legs left this week :)

ice the next 48 hours, then heat and easy stretching.

my advice to you would be to work around it if you can. I had a pulled back muscle completely sideline me for like six weeks when I was in my 20's. Then I didn't start going back to the gym again until my 30's. Just keep at it would hate to see something like this happen to someone as inspirational as you.
Body for Life Forum Message by LilRed (107 posts) at 10:18 AM
Tai, absolutely ice for the first 48 hours like jstone said. If you can take ibuprofin or naproxen (Aleve) do that because they both have anti-inflammatory effects. Just don't take the pain meds before working out so that you can feel pain normally during the work out.

OK the nurse is in now: first ice it. All day today. 20 minutes on, 10 minutes off. Motrin every 6 hours. NO LIFTING!!!! I mean NO LIFTING at all. If you don't find any improvement over the next 3-4 days get it checked. By improvement I don't mean all better, I mean feeling somewhat better. Heat may feel good on it tomorrow and you can try it then.

Hey Tai, just wanna give you a heads up. Even when you're all better, make sure you are aware of the warning signs for re-pulling that muscle (tightness, pulling while doing a lift, etc). I pulled a groin muscle a while back (fell while I was pregnant) and today while doing leg extensions, I could feel that old injury calling. I had to really watch my form and be very careful so as not to re-pull it. Hope your muscle feels better soon. Also, for the heat thing-a little trick my mom (a nurse) taught me. Fill an old sock about halfway with uncooked rice and heat it in the microwave for about 1 min. It holds the heat for a while and molds better around body parts than a heating pad does. Hope this helps you!
Body for Life Forum Message by drjlbaileyii (143 posts) at 07:48 PM
Ice every other hour for 20 minutes or until completely numb.Gentle stretch. avoid heat except for showers.. Take it easy. Everyone, even MD's, say put heat after 24-48. Nope keep icing it. I hardly ever tell patients to put heat on anything. It creates too much influx of blood and inflammatory prostaglandins. So no heat....Ice ice baby...

The important thing here is to do the workouts right? Lately, after my reset to week 1, I have had trouble getting up in the morning. but I do complete the workout in the evening ( empty stomach, of course ) and eat about an hour later. I am not missing something here am I?
Body for Life Forum Message by jstone (375 posts) at 12:14 PM
Well .... I strongly believe that the diet portion is 80% of the equation, at least.
To be completely successful though, you still need the weight training and cardio.

Zooman, I frequently go from 5-meal-days to 6-meal-days. If I'm supposed to consider my toddler's nutrition over the course of a week, I bet the 5-or-6 meal difference isn't that huge of a deal. Make them quality, that's all. :-)

We are all more important than we even know... when you keep this in your head the past abuses of troubled people do not hold us back. Do it for yourself and do it to then help others

beegee - It is certainly common for people with emotional wounds to develop weight problems but I am also very impressed by the adversity so many BFL'ers have overcome long before they even became BFL'ers.
Again, the main purpose of my post was to remind anyone who is struggling with BFL to make sure that these wounds are not holding them back - and if they are - to realize that their best bet to be successful in BFL is to address those underlying issues (while still staying committed to their BFL program).

I've used that principle countless times and have only turned around and came back home a couple of times when I was REALLY sick...

2. I would date Matthew McConnaughey (I love those southern men) or Brad Pitt. He's from Missouri, that's almost southern, right?

1. My first half of my last job. I spent six months under the title of event coordinator at a newspaper. I didn't have a clue how to coordinate events, and noone would help. That sounds whiney and dumb, but it's the simple version of a past I'd rather not bring up. :-) I got out of that duty shortly before we moved to Utah, and spent three months selling advertising space in said newspaper -- better, but still awful.
2. Here's a fun new reality TV show: Who Wants to Date Vin Diesel. The contestants have to fight -- to the death -- to win. :-) Tai, you left out that he's a big geeky dork (seen the video of him break-dancing?). Pitter-patter goes my heart. "Pitch Black" freakin' rocks! But, since Tai can still kick my a$$, I'd take Sean Penn (older and improved version). Yeah, I know he's like old enough to be my dad, but have you seen him?!

Caveat Emptor on those light therapy boxes. I usually slump in January and February after the holidays, and the winter just drags. I researched the light boxes last year and was swamped with all kinds of conflicting advice. Each claims to use a different spectrum, each purports to be more effective then the others and you have no idea which one is going to really do the job. *sigh* I eventually went with a cheaper brand found used on ebay, the jury is still out if it's actually helping. I mean, technically I've not taken a rifle up to the belltower so I'm probably not getting worse ;-)
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (541 posts) at 02:12 PM
Ditto with rfphill here. I did some research (mostly on those same sites ICU-RN mentioned) and followed links to some abstracts re the studies of the light boxes. There were major disagreements regarding which spectrum/voltage worked best, and also some thoughts that the things have, at best, a placebo effect.
I wonder, considering your locale, Mahalia, whether there might be a place "nearby" that would rent the light boxes? If nothing else, perhaps try a mix of aromatherapy (simply candles or scents that remind you of spring/summer), houseplants and growing lamps (tee-hee, grow lamps), and the "sunlight" bulbs you've been using.
And keep exercising! :-)
I defininitely couldn't live through those winters, but the summers would be so awesome.

I'm feeling some symptoms of SAD right now too. Did you know that Pittsburgh is the 2nd gloomiest city in the US? I recently read that...anyway, my problem isn't so much my mood, but I am just exhausted. No matter what I do -- go to bed early, workout in the morning, etc. -- I'm still exhausted. I'm a little upset about it because for the first few weeks on this program, I was feeling great. Now I'm back to my old sluggish self, even after a workout. Does anyone know of any "natural" things you could do? Is there some kind of scent/aromatherapy that helps with this? I take a fat burner just once in the morning, but my energy level is getting so low that I'm thinking of taking one in the afternoon too.
Body for Life Forum Message by Mahalia (159 posts) at 11:27 PM
Okay cheetera, I live in a tiny remote town. The nearest city to make decent purchases is Edmonton which is about a 20 hour drive from here. I get a huge tax break for living in a remote area ($7.50 a day tax break X 365 days). I work in a hospital and can get medical info as to what is used in some clinics. Because I have been diagnosed with it previously and had cat scans to verify, my health insurance can probably cover the cost or partial cost of it.
I do find the tanning beds help. However I don't have the interest in sending my kids there. So it may just be eonomical to purchase for the sake of my family.

But seriously a week is not a drop in the bucket! And eating close to the program is not eating to the program! Check out Hussmans site, and look at what he says in regards to not losing weight. I did the write down everything you eat thing for a week and it suprised me. Progress not perfection is the key, and as long as you are moving forward that is what counts! My wife was in a tizzy over not droping scale weight for a few weeks, and then after the 4 week shots all was better for her. Just stay focused on forward movement and the rest will fall into place.

Hey Illini
Please read my post under the support forum - "Forget the scales and change your focus"
I too felt a little disapointed when I had my weigh-in, but I also had to accept the fact that it took me nearly two years of dedicated self-abuse to look this way. If I can begin to reverse this mess in 12 weeks it'll be worth it.
Please don't give up on yourself, give it time and you will see results.
Take care

Body for Life Forum Message by popeye (41 posts) at 09:33 AM
I can see your point about going cold turkey myself. I also have not a shred of self control when it comes to pizza. Get a large, eat a large is the way its always been for me in the past also. The wife and I now order a medium or small and split it, or you can go down to your local and get a slice or two on free day only. Otherwise you will hear; Drop the slice and step away from the dominos driver!

Body for Life Forum Message by JohnA (299 posts) at 01:55 PM
Ah, Pizza, my favorite arteries cloger. I just run a nutrition breakdown on one of Pizza Hut’s: 1 slice of medium pizza is 200 calories. Not bad. A whole medium is probably 6 slices = 1200 calories; a large one is 8 slices = 1600 calories. The best part is that you don’t need to worry about the white flower dough it is made of because the saturated fat and the cholesterol in the cheese slows the digestion, so the 1200+ calories don’t go into your fat stores within an hour. It takes 3 hours to do it.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (533 posts) at 01:58 PM
Seems like all that extra digestion time would burn a lot of calories... so pizza is HEALTH FOOD!!!!

Pizza is a sin ... :)

I am at the beginning of week 8 and have been on an emotional rollercoaster just like some of you. One day I'll think OMG look at those muscles. The next day you've got to be kidding me who am I fooling such a long way to go.
Now for the best part, in eight weeks I've lost about 3 pounds. After cheat day I can be up as much as 3, 5, 7, 8 pounds but will loose it. Some people have commented boy you've really lost weight, so I tell them yeah a wopping 3 pounds. One day I got in the car and drove to the mall. I have a lot of Gap jeans (sometimes I fit a size 4 sometimes too small, at one time size 6 too tight). Walked straight to the ultra low rise, grabbed a size 2. In the change room they went on no problem.......SIZE 2!!!!!!
I may be impatient too but I am determined!!!!! So at the end of challenge 1 or 2 or 3 when I GO UNDER A SIZE ZERO THEN WHAT - KIDS CLOTHES (just kidding and a bit hopeful).
Thought I'd share that - all for a measely 3 pounds.
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (25 posts) at 01:00 AM
Putting things into perspective - North American sizing has changed; has everyone heard of this? I'm not sure what size that would be say 20 years ago - maybe a 6 or 8?????? Really my main point was that 3 lbs equals a size or two. My sister and I used to gauge weight loss as one size equals 10 pounds for an average size woman. So the three pounds looks more like 15 or 20 thats the funny part.
Pictures hmmmm. I haven't even seen any yet. As a matter of fact we are supposed to be getting a digital camera this week - we'll see.
Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (201 posts) at 08:21 AM
I ride that roller coaster a lot. Some days I look at myself and I think wow, and other days I still see the fat woman I was, and it takes everything I have to convince myself it's not true. I focus on the numbers, because I can't trust my eyes. I can't tell when I'm being realistic about my progress, because my perceptions are so all over the place.
Body for Life Forum Message by Gymbunny (64 posts) at 08:27 AM
I'd like to see some pics too! Hopefully you can put some up soon. UK sizing is way different to US sizes...to be a size 2 in the UK you'd have to be a child..the smallest sizes available here in normal shops go from a 6 to a 24ish! A size 6 is like a 23-24in waist..! Waaaay tiny. What waist size is an american size 2?? And can you get 0's? Weird! :)

Pick-up line: After being asked and answering a simple question asked by a good looking hottie you’ve never met before - who then immediately turns and walks away – “Sure, use me up and toss me to the curb like I am just trash!” When she comes back and asks why you said that, say “It was my way of trying to get you back here to talk to me. And it seems to have worked!” I used it 28 years ago and have been married to that lady for 25 years. Smoooooooth baby, smooooooooooth!

I hate spiders too. As far as pick up lines, I have heard alot and being in vegas, I hear alot too. I was at a casino with Shawns cousin one night and this guy was harrassing the cocktail waitress. I told her want me to shut him up for you. Get me ice water and throw some lemon in it before brining it out to me. See in vegas, they are not allowed to accidentally or otherwise spill drinks on customers, they can only have them escorted out by security. I walked up to the guy and said hey, he looked up at me and I said. You really should learn to treat people with respect. He said so what I was giving her a bad time. I said no you were being a JERK and threw the water with lemon right in his face and walked out with my cousin. We were getting ready to leave anyways. The people around were laughing like crazy. I walked past a security guard and said, oh I am sorry, I have PMS. He actually smiled at me and walked over and escorted the guy out. HA!

Oh I forgot for all those who don't like clowns. Cannot sleep the clowns will eat me...I actually got a shirt with that saying on it for shawns cousin. He HATES clowns, the best part it came with a matching pillow. Got it at Hot Topic. ROFLMAO.

I'm with SKinny McSkitterson and Nikki....
Clowns ...they are the only thing I'm irrationally scared of. When I finally had the nerve to admit that to my wife after several years of marriage (in a hushed whisper, after checking under all the beds and behind all the shower curtains) she said "Why, is it because they keep small children in their big floppy shoes until they're ready to eat them?". I think it was like three days before they finally got me out of the fetal position.
Pick up lines....I was a bartender and my wife was a cocktail waitress when we were in college, so we've heard them all. Of course, there's nothing quite like being on the clock and hearing some drunk skeezer throwing pick up lines at your fiance...

Grace...we have those godfersaken things where Ilive, too. They're called "camel crickets" here, but same thing. Our first home was built in the 1920's, and when we'd go down in the basement, those things were all over the walls and would start jumping. It sounded like popcorn popping.
We spent the night in mammoth cave Kentucky a couple of years ago and those things were everywhere. I was actually relieved they were there, though. I was fairly certain they'd eat any clowns that might wander in while we were down there.
Body for Life Forum Message by Grace2bfit (80 posts) at 10:12 AM
Knox....OMG!!!!
My stomach is rolling just thinking about them...oh, but to have them in your basement...I think I would die!
The first time I saw one...I ran out of the house and down the street screaming! I'm totally serious, my roommate and neighbors thought I was a total loon! But I once I explained they ALL understood!
LOL...eating the clowns...perhaps they could all just feast on eachother...that would solve our problems wouldn't it?
Body for Life Forum Message by Knox (70 posts) at 10:17 AM
Yes, but then the ones that were eating the others would end up looking like those things on "Starship Troopers" and we'd have a hella mess on our hands....

OK it really makes my skin crawl when a mosquito, fly whatever buzzes right by my ear uuuuggggghhhh. I can't stand it. I start doing this little freak out dance.
OK now this wasn't really a pick up line (I don't think it was anyway) but it had to be the dumbest thing I had ever heard. This was pre breast reduction: "WOW I bet you'll never drown with those" Please!!!!! Give me a break.

1) Mall escalators. Don't ask I just hate getting on those things. They flip me out. Oh of course snakes.
2) Can't remember those usually go in one ear and out the other. And it has been awhile since I heard one. Something about the ring on my finger.

OMG I cannot believe yall are talking about those cricket spider things. We moved to Ohio 6 mos ago from Texas and we bought a house with a basement. Our well pump room is in the basement and when we went to turn the light on The entire ceiling of the well pump room was covered in these insects that looked like crickets body but has spider legs. They are light colored and look almost like they have spots. Is this a cricket spider? Holy crap they are scary looking. We had these little things you plug into the wall in our Texas house thats supposedly has a high pitched tone to it humans cannot hear and its supposed to keep insects away aka roaches in texas(another fear). I plugged them in everywhere in the basement. So far no more cricket spiders but I am not sure if it is because its winter or those things are actually working..
yuk yuk , got the creepy factor going today!

1. Clowns - definite spine-tingler for me, too.
2. I was in Indy on a business trip and some guy came up to me and I don't remember his first line, but I replied with "sorry, I'm married" and his reply to that was "well how married are you?" ....like that would somehow change my mind?
Body for Life Forum Message by Knox (70 posts) at 12:51 PM
Actually, I think "Sorry, I'm married" would be a pretty good pickup line. As in- you're on an airplane and you make eye contact with the girl sitting across the aisle and she smiles politely and you say "Sorry, I'm married". Of course, if you employ this strategy and don't look like Matthew McCanaughey, you good end up pretty lonely, I guess....
Maybe that one should have just stayed in my head...
Body for Life Forum Message by Stryker (25 posts) at 12:53 PM
1.) Roaches - had to live around them for 10 years in Houston
2.) I was VERY shy and naive in college, so the girls were always using lines on me...I didn't get most of them. I remember having lunch with a girl from class (who I found out later liked), and she went into this whole thing about how she felt the guy should be the one responsible for "protection." I remember thinking, "Why is she telling me this?"
The only pick-up line I ever used was at a social gathering where I said, "Haven't we met before?" The girl couldn't believe I used such a lame intro...until I told her exactly when and where we had met. We've been married 25 years!

1. Black Widow spiders... When I lived in Phoenix we had them everywhere. By the end of summer they would get pretty big. They are so freaking glossy and shiny and move with such a mechanized quickness, I still see 'em in my head (we don't have 'em in Iowa). When I was a kid I had a bedroom windown where one took up residence, outside my window was a porch light and so there always was a supply of food for this wicked insect. Normally I firebombed these, but this one I let live and hoped that by looking at her everyday I would get over that low level shiver I get when I looked at 'em. Their webs are just a tangled random mess and very strong, thick threads. You put your hand through one, and it triggers that mortal fear back in the dark corners of your soul, the shiver takes hours to get rid of sometimes.. LOL.
2. Worst pick up line: "You have the right to remain silent, anything you say..." (she wanted me bad, she even handcuffed me to get my attention). LOL.
Body for Life Forum Message by momofthreegirls (250 posts) at 01:49 PM
1 I have so many irrational fears! LOL I hate driving over bridges because I saw a movie once where there was an earthquake or something and the bridge split and all the cars went flying over the edge, except for the ones that were trapped on the small piece of bridge still left. I hate scorpions after encountering one in the shower when I was a kid. I am afraid of spiders, even small ones, and I am afraid of being kidnapped and tortured to death. It's amazing I can even walk around with all those fears! LOL
Unfortunately, no one has ever tried to pick me up. I met my husband when I was 17, and we pretty much have been together the whole time. I picked him up, and I remember our first conversation, which was about some Monty Python movie I told him i had seen. We talked for quite a while, and I finally told him a couple of years ago that I had never actually seen that movie, I just wanted to talk to him! LOL
Body for Life Forum Message by Knox (70 posts) at 02:18 PM
Mom,
You mean you're a female and you actually enjoy Monty Python movies??? No wonder he snatched you up. You're a rare treasure.
Body for Life Forum Message by lcbfl (24 posts) at 02:39 PM
1. Okay, I live in Pittsburgh. We have the three rivers, right? I'm not afraid of them per se, but I am afraid of being trapped in the river current. I used to have nightmares about that. I dunno...it's weird.
2. When I was younger, my friends and I used to always ask boys what time it was so we could start talking to them. The worst line I ever heard was as I was walking into a bar. The bouncer goes "Oh my! You are beautiful." (I say "thanks") then he goes "Are you Italian?" (I say "yes") and he says "whatta ya say we go make some Italian babies?" ....soooooo stupid :oP
Oh, and for the record Knox -- my sister looooves Monty Python movies. I think they're alright, but she's obsessed. So yeah, there are plenty of girl out there that like them.
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (541 posts) at 02:46 PM
I'm afraid of fish (moreso now, after that kitchen exorcism fiasco).
Wow, I'd have to really think and prioritize to tell you the WORST pick-up line I've ever gotten. Most I can't repeat without really offending people. This is slightly funny: I was at a bar in S.C. with work friends and some random guy who was using the bar as a prop to keep his drunk butt off the floor reached over and started stroking the back of my shirt -- the way your spouse does in public.
He wasn't even looking at me, nor me at him. The friends I was with just shared an "OMG, WHAT is he doing?!" glance at eachother.
Pretty quickly, the guy just like woke up or something and stopped and shuffled away. Very weird.
Body for Life Forum Message by Katy (72 posts) at 04:40 PM
Not a "fear", just something I can't stand: unglazed terra cotta or other pottery. I get MAJOR shivers if I touch it!
Worst pick-up line: "If I said you had a great body, would you hold it against me?" This was actually used by my husband right after we met...on another girl. I told him he was stupid. Is it any wonder he loved me?
Oh, and Grace- remember in the first Jaws movie where the viewer is underwater & coming up on some skinny boy's legs, like from the shark's view? Those were my husband's legs!

Hey, Cheetara-one time I had a somewhat similar situation where I 'accidentally' did that to a total stranger. I was in line at Disney World and I was behind this guy. He was wearing a navy blue sweatshirt and he had this really big piece of lint on the back of it. So, my first instinct was just to get it off. Sooo, I stuck my hand out to pick it off and the woman with him saw me out of the corner of her eye and she turned towards me, and he saw her turn around and then he turned around. There I stood with my hand stuck out, almost touching this guy's back................talk about your awkard moments. It was made worse by the fact that no way was I getting in the back of the line-so I had to stand behind them the entire time until we got on the ride.

Well, this is a sympathy feeling! I am feeling it to I am week 7 and I am just erkkked cause I feel like I am not having any fat loss. I feel as though I am standing still. So, I upped my weights. Consulted someone on my cardio routine. Seems that my body has adjusted. And when I say adjusted I mean to the treadmill, the ellipticle, the bike. So, I was told to throw it out of whack again to spur on fat loss again 2 min @ level 5 & 2 min @ a level 9-10. Do that for 20 min but do not exceed 30. You can try it if you want? But, I totally understand where you are coming from I am riding in the same bost as you right now.....maybe not looking as good as you ; ), but in the same boat! So keep up the good work because you are looking absolutley great. Check your portions you might be limiting yourself to much. And whatever you do don't limit your carb intake that will make you even more hungry! I have found that on the days where I seem to be huuuuungry that the 1 TBSP of natural peanut butter in between a split banana helps (banana sandwich). Hope this was of some help to you. Also follow everyones advice with the don't give up now cause you have come this far there is no turning back now! AND YOU LOOK GREAT!

I HATE MY SCALES!!!
I worked my butt off all week and lost a measly pound AND my body fat % increased AAAAAAARRRGH!!!!
Not satisfied with the reading, I stripped off my undies and stepped back on the scales to find I had put on 1/2 pound. HOW???
But despite this, I refuse to let 3 little digits on the scales dictate my mood for the rest of the week.
SOOOOO, I decided to focus on the positive changes I have started to notice like.
*My sleep has improved and I actually feel rested when I wake up.
*My skin feel smoother and my face glows.
*My body feels tight (I love that feeling) and my clothes are starting to feel loose around my waist.
*I was soaping up in the shower and instead of having to negotiate my lumps and bumps my hands simply glided over my skin.
So, message to my scales - "You can stick that lousy reading, I know BFL is working!"
Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (104 posts) at 04:29 AM
Elsie - Sounds like you have a crummy scale. I started the challenge using a Conair Weight Watchers digital scale. But it was too inconsistent. I'd weigh myself, step off the scale, weigh myself again and the new number would often be 2-6 lbs different!
I bought a new Tanita scale and it has been very consistent. I like to weigh every day. I understand that your weight often does not reflect tha progress you are making so I measure my waist every day as well. Sometimes it's the scale that indicates progress - sometimes the tape indicates progress - and sometimes both do.
Jim
Body for Life Forum Message by Elsie (24 posts) at 05:02 AM
Hey Jim
Ohh they're crummy alright. In fact I could think of a few other things to call them :)
Believe it or not I also have Tanita scales, the Total Innerscan model which also works out your body compositon of water, muscle, bone etc..
I bought them for their accuracy, hence my reasons for being upset with the initial reading.
Unlike you, I couldn't weigh myself everyday. Any weight fluctuation would really upset me and I think I'd develop an unhealthy obsession.
If my weight doesn't change much at my next weigh-in, I'll have to re-evaluate what I'm doing to find out what I'm doing wrong.
Body for Life Forum Message by Cpt_Tripps (33 posts) at 07:50 AM
John you are a better man that me. I couldn't wight and or measure daily. I had a pair of board shorts from last summer I didn't want to try on after 5 weeks just for the possibilitie I couldn't fit in them and it cause all kinds of doubt in my mind. I did it anyway and I fit plus I tried on some smaller ones and fit in those also. They were a little snug but wearable.
I weight every Saturday and only step on once and get away fromt he scale. I measure every 4 weeks and take pics at that time. I have noticed alot of chanes this last 2 weeks and have been fighting hte urge to take photos. My wife won't take them so I guess that settles that!
You all keep up the good work and focus on how you feel the body will be right behind how you feel mentally.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (533 posts) at 08:23 AM
Elsie, good for you for looking at the positive aspects of your progress, rather than focusing on a number that doesn't really reflect the changes that are happening inside. There are a lot of us who could take a lesson from you!
BTW, I don't think you're doing anything wrong.... the scale went down a pound while you're in the muscle-building phase, and even Tanita scales will vary on their accuracy depending on how hydrated you are, among other factors. Just keep up the great work you know you're doing, you'll get there!
Jess

Body for Life Forum Message by Grace2bfit (80 posts) at 09:26 AM
I've found that I ABSOLUTELY cannot rely on the numbers...they're too frustrating and with my past of eating disorders, it's not a good thing for me to obsess over.
I weigh in only once every 2 weeks...measure myself every week but rely fully on how my clothes fit and how my body is changing.
This progress has been very slow for me and it can be very discouraging. I'm in my 7th week and I've 'only' lost 10 pounds and 'only' lost 10 inches...I was hoping it would be more; however I've gone down a complete dress size and I'm learning great eating and training disciplines.
Be patient...the weight and inches will come off. Slower for some of us than for others, but it will still happen!
Best wishes to everyone! May your day be full of achievement and accomplishment!

The first couple free days I was a little aprehensive about eating of plan, but as the book says eat what ever you want. You deserve it.
Some people go all out and pig out on freeday and some only have a meal. I eat a meal or two and just relax. After a few weeks you will start to settle in. You will find that when you do eat off plan you are not eating nearly as much as you use to.
Don't feel guilty and don't worry about it. Enjoy the day relax and be ready to push it hard the next day!

Also, you'll find you have cravings through the programme..if these happen on a non-free day just write them down and keep them til freeday. You'll need to get that hubby of yours kicked into shape ;) Glad you took pics..it really is a good way to track and to get honest feedback, sometimes you just don't see the good things happening to your body until someone else does..it's weird! And when you're really craving something all week put it away for your free day and then get it out and see if your still craving it. I like to eat fairly normal and still get in a lot of water. I had bunco last night. I resisted...homemade lasagna (smelled SO good) homemade cream puffs, chocolate chip cookies, beer AND wine. I drank my water and my shake! It was hard at first but once in my mind that I wasn't going to eat it, I just ignored it. Although I did keep eyeballing the cookies (big thick chewy looking toll house).
Thanks GOD my girlgfriends don't pressure me into trying this tasting that "one bite won't hurt"!
One more small victory for me, YAY!

Mmmm, lasagna. Me want some. For Gymbunny, I think bunco is a dice game where you win prizes and stuff.
Body for Life Forum Message by nikki (350 posts) at 03:13 PM
Yes , Fit. Bunco is a dice game where you win prizes. It's more a chance for busy moms to get away from it all one night a month. And eat and drink. And eat and eat... I forgot to mention all the candy on the tables! Damn it was tough! But I am tougher.....tee hee hee!

Just wanted to throw a question out there for fun.
Has anyone ever had to improvise at home for workout equipment?? For instance: My husband just bought me an incline bench because he is so proud of me.
Before having it, I had a huge roll of extra carpet in my basement so I used it as my workout bench. Is that silly or what? Let me know your favorite Improv tool!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (533 posts) at 08:26 AM
Before I got my bench... I was using my coffee table! :D

My neighbor does curls with her canned goods before opening them. She says she doesn't want to have "old lady arms"...she's in her 80's!
When my son was little, I used to use him for exercise. I'd sit him on my feet & do leg extensions or make a "swing" of my arms & swing him up & down to stretch my arms & back. I used to tell him those were his "jobs". He'd toddle up to me & tell me it was time to go to work!

Our basement is unfinished and that is where the home gym, dumbbells, exercise ball, etc. is kept. We have an old twin size matress on the floor where I do my ab exercises. I don't have a treadmill and usually do my cardio outside. However, one morning it had iced overnight and it was too slippery to try it. So I went downstairs and did four different exercises to get my heart rate up. I jogged in place, then I did jumping jacks, then jump rope and then on the spur moment, I used the mattress like a trampoline and just jumped around on it. I felt stupid, but it definitely got my heart rate up.

I have put chairs together to use as a bench before to do chest exercises.
Now, I have graduated to the bench that used to be at the end of my bed - keeps me on my toes for my workouts AND for putting my clothes away, instead of setting them on the bench!! :)
Too funny, Bob - lol
Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (302 posts) at 06:07 PM

I'm new here, so please don't think I'm rude for butting in. But, I had a comment about the stretch marks.
I have them and I'm only 29 with no kids. They are really bad on my legs.
I bought some stuff at a place called Wild Oats called Pregnant Belly Salve. It's all natural and has stuff like roots in it. I use it twice a day and I have seen results. I'm also tanning, and that fades the color of the marks. but, the product I bought for sure is helping.
And, if they never go away, we should start a campaign to celebrate them!

First of all, Dani, we love the input here and you will never be considered rude for "butting in".
Second, Christie, your suit is way cute!! I have kids and have the stretch marks on my legs and I figure all they are is proof that mom's can look good too! With weight loss and time, they fade and sure don't detract from a fit body. Your are doing great and don't worry about your marks!

But yeah, definite scare-factor there. We had big snakes, including cottonmouths, around our country house when I was a kid. And I was a Steve Irwin-in-training back then, always dragging some type of snake or another (I knew which ones were "bad") home with me.
I was always scared of badgers when I was a kid. My step-dad threatened me that badgers would get me when I wandered through the pastures around our house.

Good Morning, I did real good yesterday, did not cheat on my diet and went and bought two salads for myself and my mom and got the dressing on the side and I didn't even use 1/2 of it and this morning had a great Upper Body Workout and yet, I am still at the same weight that I was two weeks ago. WTFO....I am getting irritated and I know it takes sometime to get it off but I do know one thing, people say it didn't take you a week to gain the weight, well, I can tell you that I can gain 5lbs over the weekend EASY, if I don't watch what I eat. I need to do something, at some point the scale will have to drop.... It has too. I am eating Myoplex Carb Sense bars for breakfast, taking my Betagen and Flaxseed oil, drinking water and for lunch I eat either tuna and 14 wheat thins (1 serving) or another bar or shake, afternoon snack, is a RTD shake and supper, either it is shrimp stirfry, grilled chicken and vegetables and small steak and vegetables... So what am I doing wrong, maybe I need to tweak it in one area for it to go! thanks!

Well Udenia, 2 weeks of static weight is a watch alert - you don't change anything, you just watch your weight for 2 more weeks. If your weight is static for 4 weeks, then we need to go over your food and exercise plans and if needed, alter one thing at a time. Mark March 16th in your calendar and we'll see then what to do.
Body for Life Forum Message by dani_parker (2 posts) at 01:17 PM
Udenia, I've seen your name on the BFL guestbook. I've been following your progress as you post!
What week are you in again?
My only suggestion, based on what I've read on some BFL yahoo groups I belong to is to incorporate more whole foods. I like the shakes and bars too, but you get more nutrients from whole foods.
I just came off of a two week stump on the scale. Then I weighed in this morning and lost another 2.5 pounds.
While I was stumped, I reviewed my foods and saw that I was WAY LOW on my calories. This was making me RETAIN fat! So, I slowly added more calories and removed my nutrition bar completely. And now I'm seeing results.
I would suggest checking your foods first.
But, John could be right too. You may be gaining muscle, so the scale won't show that progress.
best of luck to you,
Danielle

I have a few questions.
Have you taken any measurements?
Are you missing any workouts or meals?
Can you post a sample day of your meals?
Are you weighing the same day of the week at the same time?
Alot of times even if you have not lost any scale weight you can still loose inches and water weight, especially with betagen can offset any fat loss you have had.
Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (76 posts) at 10:41 PM
Meal Plan for today:
Breakfast: 0630 Myoplex Carb Sense Bar / Betagen and flaxseed oil
snack: 0900 Myoplex Light bar
Lunch: 1200: 1 cup cottage cheese and grapefruit (until comfortable)(Betaqgen and flaxseed oil)
snack: 3:00 pm RTD shake
Supper: 5:00pm small steak (no fat) broccoli and 1/2 cup pasta
with water (betagen/Flaxseed oil)
that is what I have eaten so far today but I am due another meal in about 1 hour. thanks, Udenia

Alright, I've gotten plain lazy. I am sleeping through my alarm and pushing snooze way too much. If I don['t get my work outs in in the morning it doesn't get done because I have 3 kids ages 3.5, 2.5, 11mos. I'm training for my first marathon in April and am up to 15 miles, but I've hit a wall in motivation. I've really got to get on the ball or I'll get hurt trying to cram too much training in too short a time. I completed the BFL challenge in Sept of last year and from there decided to go after a lifelong goal of running a marathon. I know my 'challenge' is different than many of yours in exercise routines but basically we're all trying to better ourselves and I could flat out use some encouragement. Thanks! Margaret

Do you remember a post that Tai-Kee placed on here about failure not being when you fall down, but when you don't get up? If you read this, Tai, please post that again. I think of that so often and it motivates me. So you missed a few. Get yourself to bed early so that you don't hit the snooze button. Do you read Runner's World? They have a good website too.

Margaret -
After seeing what transformation you made in your first challenge, I am a true believer that you can accomplish anything you desire!
For me, after the initial 12 weeks, I felt great and then I let the holiday sweep me away. It took 2 months to finally get back on track again. I had that just plain lazy attitute towards food, especially, and would miss occasional workouts or just not really hit the 10's. I gained weight (FAT) and started to really feel lousy. Just in the past 2 weeks have I gotten truly back on track. That was only accomplished by refusing to listen to that little voice in my head that told me to "just eat a little, it won't ruin anything". I just decided to be defiant towards that little voice and just do the right thing. It worked. I am eating so much better and what do you know...I feel a lot more energy. My workouts are much better and I am hitting my 10's.
Margaret, I know that you can overcome this small set back. One other thing that helped me get out of the "I am tired, so I will skip a workout and spending the rest of the week feeling guilty" cycle was to just take a couple of planned days OFF, food and exercise regimen. I didn't go overboard, but just took a much needed rest from the guilt. Then I had more focused determination. It helped.
Good luck and you know I am a huge fan!!

Kelly Adair on the Oprah show had and interesting idea for the alarm clock thing.....Set your alarm clock across the room so that when it goes off you have ot get up and turn it off but not only that have yur exercise clothes right there ready to put on with your shoes as well so that they are staring at you. I know having 3 small children must be difficult but you have made it this far? So get to it!

Body for Life Forum Message by Dan97526 (143 posts) at 07:20 PM
As an (I hope) amusing aside, I offer this alarm-clock-across-the-room anecdote.
I am not a morning person. When I was in grad school, I would often study late into the night. I had to teach an 8am class, so, knowing the difficulty I would have getting up if I could just reach over and hit snooze, I set up an alarm across me bedroom.
One night I was still up at 3AM, on my bed, studying modern algebra or something equally fun. I don't remember falling asleep but somehow during the night I managed to push a book or two off the bed onto the floor.
See it coming?
Alarm goes off, I stagger across the room, shut it off, make a 180 with the full intention of going back to bed, step on a book and do a face-plant into a steel bedframe. Right between the eyes.
The result was a CAT scan, 9 stitches, and a very attractive scar smack between my eyebrows.
At least I was wide awake after that!
Now that you've hopefully at least cracked a smile, Margaret, a few words of encouragement. You have already accomplished great things. Motivating yourself now can't be as hard as initially crossing the abyss. You'll get over this little bump in the road.

Margaret, I've done 2 marathons and let me tell you from experience that nothing beats that feeling of coming across the finish line and having them put that medal on your neck. Of course 2 buff Marines put mine on, but that's another story. I know that this stage in the game the running can get a little tedious, is there a running group in your area that you could join? Sometimes they will schedule group runs, its always easier to run with a partner or two. Good luck

So, last night I decided to wait until after my kids were in bed to do my cardio. Then, the first episode of the new Amazing Race came on at nine, and so I started watching it, thinking I'd hit the gym at 10. Well, I didn't figure out until later that it was a two hour episode and I really, really wanted Rob and Amber to get eliminated the first day because I didn't like them on Survivor and.....
Um...sorry. Anyway, I didn't get to the gym until 11:15 (which is about an hour past my weekday bedtime). My workout went fine, and I felt good that I had gone, since it was like 15 degrees outside, and I really, really didn't want to go, but within just a few minutes of finishing up, I was really dizzy and feeling nauseous. I felt that way until I went to bed. I also slept pretty fitfully, and wasn't real rested when I woke up this morning. Does this happen to anyone else? Am I just a morning person? Any direction would be appreciated.
Thanks!

It's my understanding (and personal experience, but may be different for most people) that exercising too late has a tendency to interfere with your sleep, because you have increased energy when you're done. I usually don't work out much later than late afternoon. My bf works out at 9pm sometimes and then is up all night.
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (541 posts) at 01:54 PM
I did most of my first-six-weeks workouts late at night, Knox, but I'm a night person. I get those sick feelings when I work out EARLY in the day on an empty stomach. Now that I've moved to earlier workouts, I find that a late one will keep me up all night tossing and turning.
Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (129 posts) at 01:59 PM
me too, so used to getting up and workouting out, I started doing my cardio late in the evening, then I am so wined up I can't even think of sleep until 2 in the morning. Exercise is an eye opener for me!
Body for Life Forum Message by jstone (375 posts) at 02:09 PM
I normally always workout after work, and need about 3-4 hours to "come down", so for me, I won't workout past 7pm , ever. I'd rather have a good nights sleep. That recovery is important.

I don't like to workout too late - I have difficulty sleeping afterwards (I workout hard!).
However, I get to the gym at around 6:00pm or 6:15pm..by the time I get done, it's often between 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm.

Just a check in. I can tell I am gaining muscle now, especially in my upper body. when I flex, there is muscle and some deinition. People are complementing how my body is changing, that keeps me motivated.
My waist is getting smaller, slowly.
Yesterday I have come to the conclusion to be patient. I decided this is not a race to see how fast an how much I can lose in this 12 weeks. If it takes me a while so what. It is the healthy eating and exercise habits that is my focus to adopt and to become my everyday life for the rest of my life. It took me 33 years to get where I am at. Sure i could do it, but than just as easy undo it.
I am finding my mind shudder at candy or seeing people put 5 tsp of sugar in coffee. Stuff like that aare the mental changes going on besides the physical.
Other changes that I have noticed is:
My hair is not as oily. Usually morning I am a grease bucket. Now I can forgo a washing. IT has to be this healthy eating.
Secondly: My skin feel smoother.
Any way, have to go here.
Type to you guys later.

PLease add any changes you guys have noticed with yourselves.

Once I got the water running, I heard a bloodcurdling scream followed by loud crying, so I ran into the living room to find that the baby had DROPPED A 5 LB. CAST IRON WEIGHT PLATE on his LITTLE BIG TOE!!!! So, we went to the emergency room, because I was worried it might be broken. 2 hours later-verdict: not broken, just busted. So, now, it looks like this

how often do ya'll work your abs a week. I do believe that the BfL Book says to work them out after the lower body workout. So, that would mean you would work them out once a week and then the next week twice a week. That does not sound like enough to me. How about 3 times a week, after each workout. That would not to to much would it?
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (533 posts) at 05:04 PM
There are varying opinions on this, but I made myself a promise to follow BFL to a T for at least 12 weeks. Bill Phillips was asked about this on the EFL site, and he said basically, it's enough times for your legs, isn't it? So every 4 days it is for me!

Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (768 posts) at 07:11 PM
The stepper is also bad on your knees-I think. The elliptical is probably your best bet-when I first did it, it helped to pretend like they were bike pedals.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (533 posts) at 07:13 PM
I've heard that sometimes people take some time feeling comfortable on ellipticals. I always got a good workout on them, but I haven't been on one in a couple of years so don't know what it would be like for HIIT. Still looking to buy one for the house. I don't know why anyone won't just give me one, gym-quality of course, for free.
Sorry about your knee, Rod. It may just take a couple of tries to get where you don't feel awkward on it anymore. Or maybe the bike would be better for you.

It was the kind with the moving arms.
Body for Life Forum Message by drjlbaileyii (143 posts) at 07:44 PM
yeah you are taking abbreviated steps with it so it can irritate some cartilage in the knee.. With the tooshy... ride it out buddy.. it takes some time to develop the Ars callus !! LOL

Huh. Well there goes that theory... I was gonna tell you to try moving your arms! :D
Body for Life Forum Message by LilRed (107 posts) at 07:45 PM
Rod I had to use and eliptical trainer when I was out of town and the hotel's treadmill was broken. I agree that my legs got a great workout, but I didn't get that heart rate up like I do when I'm running. My husband tried it and said the same thing. BUT, since your knee is hurt, it is better than no cardio. Do you have any access to a pool? Laps are great cardio!!
Body for Life Forum Message by ptwob2 (38 posts) at 08:10 PM
Rod,
I use the elliptical trainer probably about once a week for HIIT. I like it. I don't adjust my speed though, I adjust the level. For example:
I keep the RPM between 75 and 80.
HIIT level 5 = machine level 9
HIIT level 6 = machine level 11
HIIT level 7 = machine level 13
HIIT level 8 = machine level 15
HIIT level 9 = machine level 17
HIIT level 10 = is usually a level 19
Sometimes I increase my RPM during my level 10 and on really good days I'll even bump it up to a 20 although at 19 I'm usually totally spent with about 20 seconds or so left. Give it a try.
BTW, I do the same type of thing on the bike.
Cheers

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (143 posts) at 09:04 PM
Try the bike again, Rod...if you do it a few times, the *tooshy* gets used to it!!! I also do HIIT on the stairs and it kicks my butt, but it might put just as much strain on your knee as the treadmill. I have never been able to get my heartrate up to a level 10 on the elliptical, although I can get a decent fat burning workout on it. If I am doing 3 different machines in one workout (sometimes change things up and do that), I do my first 12 minutes on the elliptical...oh I just remembered that the last time I did it I used the one with the arm movement and my HR did get up a bit higher than the on the one without the moving arms..Maybe try 10 minutes on the elliptical and pop right on to the bike...if you are really lucky and could find those two machines right next one another and monopolize them for 20 some minutes, you could do up do level 9's and 10 on the bike at kick-butt speed and the rest on the elliptical. Just another thought...probably would be hard to do, though. Hope it gets better soon!

Hey all! I posted my progress shots for 8 weeks. I feel much better than my pictures reveal. I don't think I know too much about lighting etc. I see more definition in the mirror than I do when I shoot these. :)
I have 4 weeks to go but this week is going to be VERY challenging. I had my free day today because we had our YMCA Survivor challenge celebration lunch for finishing the mileage contest at the Outback. I'm going to the basketball game tomorrow night (go illini!) and that can always be tough. Plus, we have girls night out on Friday.
On a VERY happy note, my size 12 jeans....I can actually pull them down w/o even undoing the button or zipper! I think if I push myself this last week, I'm definitely on my way to a size 8 which was my optimistic goal by the end of this challenge.
One thing I have noticed is those "stretchy" jeans I loved when I was really fat, I don't like now because they kind of shrink as you shrink! They are not a good way to measure success! I have some non-stretchy ones and they make me feel thinner! Can anyone relate to that or am I crazy!
I have also been consistantly wearing shorts to the gym when I run, it feels so much better w/o those heavy sweats weighing me down. That says a lot for my self-confidence.
THanks everyone for your encouraging posts every day! Krista

You're looking great, Krista! Those back rolls are gone gone gone!! And so are the elbow blobs.
Egads, I hadn't thought about the stretchy jeans thing! I had been feeling like I hadn't made any progress, because my larger stretchy jeans were still fitting snug. Doh! Of course they are. That's what they're supposed to do. But I can fit into smaller stretchy jeans now, too. You've made my day. :^)

Great progress! You have definitely lost a lot of fat and toned up. You are obviously building a lot of new muscle.
Now for your last 3 weeks, get that 'killer instinct' and I know you'll be a happy camper at the end of your challenge.

Has anyone had a problem with being late on BFL? NO I"M NOT PREGNANT! Not possible, unless it was another divine pregnancy! I can't sleep anymore - wake up every two hours, have been really depressed for about 2 weeks now and I'm right around 2 weeks late. Is this from one of the supplements? From working out so hard? I don't have health insurance so I can't go to the doctor so don't tell me that! lol I am just wondering if this has happened to anyone else before? I'm usually right on time.
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (541 posts) at 08:35 PM
I had that happen this last month, and it seriously contributed to my 4-day BFL hiatus! I felt like I had major PMS for 15 days -- it was awful. I'm not taking supplements, though ...
Body for Life Forum Message by beegee714 (140 posts) at 08:36 PM
Monica, it could definately be from the weight loss and exercise. If your body is shifting gears, it may have just affected your cycle. As far as being depressed, is it related to some of the other issues that you've been posting about? I truely hope that you find some peace. Brooke
Body for Life Forum Message by Monica (192 posts) at 08:38 PM
well I'm not gonna ditch or anything. I'm just having a hard time coping here. I'm so damn tired too! Maybe I'll try a tylenol Pm just for tonight. I've tried meditation, hot baths, aroma therapy, relaxation, massage aaaaaaagggggggggggghhhhhhh I need some sleep!
Body for Life Forum Message by Monica (192 posts) at 08:38 PM
I'm not usually depressed either! Believe it or not, I'm usually irritatingly upbeat!
Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (201 posts) at 08:39 PM
Could be the diet change and exercise. I don't take supplements, but I've been having the same sleep problems and was late this month, too. Depression could be a PMS thing.

Yes, if you are training hard, it will throw your hormones out of wack :-) ... for me, it's always been a typical thing (I'm never on time).
Body for Life Forum Message by Tracy711 (33 posts) at 08:40 PM
Ya, I remember being soooooooo tired the first four weeks. Everyone in my family hated me doing the program they told me I seemed unhappy, tired....not myself. Then everything kicked in and all this energy just soared in me. I was happy, up early before everyone, buzzing around getting housework done. I'm so glad I didn't give up that first four weeks. I feel like a million dollars now.
Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (104 posts) at 08:46 PM
I can see that several folks get frustrated when they don't SEE improvement in their first week or so...but it so important to measure how much better you FEEL! When you feel a little stronger, a little better about your self - YOU ARE MAKING PROGRESS REGARDLESS OF WHETHER IT SHOWS UP ON THE SCALE OR IN THE MIRROR!
OK, I'll step down off of my soapbox now...
Keep on truckin' !!!

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (533 posts) at 08:51 PM
You are absolutely right, Jim! I am just as guilty as the next person of putting too much weight (ha) on the scale and the mirror when I know that I feel stronger and, most of the time, more energetic, and I know I've made HUGE fitness gains.
Thanks for the reminder!
Jess

I agree with Jim! I'm no longer paying attention to the scale and now focusing on my energy level and how good I feel :-)

Body for Life Forum Message by lark (9 posts) at 09:25 PM
I whole heartedly agree Jim! I just posted tonight on bfl about how I'm not letting the weight loss or lack there of determine my continuation of this program. I am doing this for life changes and not just weight loss. So FORGET the scale and Hurray for the energy, the self-confidence and the feeling better! Rock on! laura

Every time I go to the gym or talk with someone who is curious about my progress I realize that I am a role model to someone... That may be a friend, family member or even a stranger.
But the bottom line is there are many people around you who want so much to improve their own health and fitness and are closely watching your progress.
So if you find yourself lacking motivation or inspiration think about those around you and how much your success will not only help you but maybe help them as well. And if you let yourself down - they'll feel let down as well...
An example for me is my younger brother who was a track star in high school. At the age of 40, he is 100 lbs overweight and has almost given up on the idea of ever getting his fitness back. If I succeed in BFL, it just might inspire him to try again - but if I fail, then I think he'll pretty much give up altogether...
Hope this helps provide a little extra motivation when you need it,
Jim
Body for Life Forum Message by personalizeabook (315 posts) at 09:13 PM
Hey Jim!
I love your pep talk - very motivational and very true!!! We are all role models... I've noticed people at work and at the gym watching me and asking questions about my progress. I've inspired a friend of mine that is in her 40s - she might start this program! ;-)

Your words are so inspirational.
My b/f was a competitive rock-climber, and had to stop when the nearest rock-climbing gym (in a 300km radius) closed down. He has put on a bit of weight (~10lb), but he has lost SO much muscle mass (*sigh* no more six pack!), if I finish BFL with sucess, he said he will do it too.
Also all my collegues are so intrigued with what I'm doing. Half of the lab have devoured my book and are always asking questions!
I find that motivates me, too.

Man you are on a roll tonight...WOO HOO
That is exactly right. EVERY single one of us are role models and someone is watching you. It could be someone very close to you or it could be a complete stranger.
It absolutely drove my Grandpa crazy that I was doing Body for LIFE and would no longer have a drink with him. I felt like I was offending him every time I had to say no. He was very persistent and one day said "You better have a drink with your ole Grandpa I may not be around much longer." Wanting to please him like I always did in the past it took everything in me to say no Granpa I'm doing this and I'm not going to cheat. He shook his head and walked off. After completing the challenge and finally having the courage to show everyone my before and after photos my Grandpa was one of the first to say how proud he was of me. I am now proud to say my Grandpa only drinks on his free day and has lost 20 lbs.
I am so glad I stayed strong that day.

You are absolutely right.
Having stuck with BFL for 13 weeks and seeing results, my wife started exercising seriously last week, and my 20-year-old daughter started BFL about 6 weeks ago. And I never suggested they do it; just by example.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (533 posts) at 09:23 PM
Wow. Just... wow. Tracy, that is an amazing story. You were already an inspiration to me... now you're a hero! =) And a role model, of course!
Jim, right again! I actually don't talk much about what I'm doing unless people specifically ask, and people at work are starting to. But to me the best thing will be if I can get my mom to start it. I told her about it and she seemed interested, but hasn't said much since her new home gym arrived. But I believe that WHEN I am successful (not if) I will be able to encourage her to start BFL as well. I think right now she's afraid of bodybuilding and thinks, although I told her otherwise, that if she did this she'd get bulky. So I'll show her and hopefully get her to do it too!
Jess

I also try to remember that I am also a role model to my kids. I was so proud the other day when my 5 year old wanted an apple for a snack instead of candy. (her choice) she said that she wanted the apple so that she wouldn't run out of energy. That's her mom talking. I loved it!!
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1084 posts) at 09:38 PM
I couldnt agree more. When I started back up again, people were always making comments about my shakes, food etc at work.
Last week, my boss emailed me seriously with a lto of quesitons about my protein shakes. Why I drink them, whats in them, and then questions about why I do what I do.
Last Monday when i talked to her, she had bought some soy protein drinks - was cutting back on her baking (and eating it) and had dropped 5 lbs.
While she might not be doing BFL - she is starting to watch what she eats more carefully.

Lately, in the gym I've been trying to make sure that IF I won an award in the challenge, that my work outs would be of championship caliber. I visualize people observing me to learn how a champ works out.
Would a champ not give it his all?
Would a champ have sloppy form?
Would a champ skip work outs?
Would a champ not find some way to get motivated and be excited about the program when the going gets tough?
This has really helped me make the most of my workouts as well as the rest of my program. When you raise your standards and create a new empowering identity for your self - great things happen!
Keep on truckin' !!!

I got sick out of nowhere this week- fever and body aches, ended up staying home from work yesterday and not really sticking to the plan. Today I was also feeling pretty bad (aching and everything) and was going to skip my workout and go home to rest. But by the end of the day I was feeling well enough to get in there- even though I thought I would be really weak, I actually went through the workout, and felt a lot better after! What is your experience with doing BFL when you are sick- either from the food or workout perspective. It's a hard balance to figure out...
Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (104 posts) at 10:02 PM
As I mentioned in a previous post, some of my friends a few weeks ago made a comment of how they liked my new haircut - that it made me look slimmer. They didn't know I had lost weight and I almost cracked up. And I didn't tell them - I just let them wonder.
Well, I saw those same friends again last night and guess what they think 'it' is now?
"Wow, your new doctor must be doing a great job because you look like you are finally starting to get well!"
I have had a chronic illness (pituitary failure) for about the last 10 years and I have to take all of the hormones the body normally produces (thyroid, testosterone, cortisol, growth hormone) and my new endocrinologist has adjusted the levels recently. And yes, I have been doing a lot better - hence I was able to begin exercising for the first time in years.
I still didn't tell them I was doing BFL. I just grinned and said "Yep! He's a hell of a good doctor!"
Maybe after I drop a 100 lbs it will finally be obvious to them that I've been losing weight! DUH!!!

I was able to recruit one other nurse into this program and she is doing awesome. Go Cheryl!!!!! This is her 3rd week.
I am trying my best to recruit as many as I can LOL. It's funny because as soon as I mention eating 6 meals a day and workouts 6 days a week, they get these big eyes and say "Oh, I don't have time to be working out 6 days a week. Every excuse under the sun why they can't do it. Oh well. I do try though :)

TopCop, judging from your pic, and your measurements, I would guess your bodyfat to be in the low 20's, so I would stick with your initial reading.
Don't get hung up on how accurate it is, as it is much more important to track the trend from week to week.

I went to bodycomp as well, and my percentage is at 48.28. I tried a few other sites and they said that I was at 28% =/- a few, but I know that I am way more than 28%. I do have a picture posted, and I can guarantee you that if you were too look at it, you'd be able to say that 48 is right on. I may look like I'm big boned, but I really am not. I'm also only 5'2
I agree that we should find a site (I choose body comp) and stick with it through the whole process. It may not be the most accurate, but at lease it's using the same criteria all the way through.

Get up, dust yourself off, and GET TO IT! Get rid of the "bad" food in the house or lock it up until Free Day. If you are eating your 6 meals AND drinking your water, you shouldn't be hungry. Fight it! Good luck and keep it clean!

I ready somewhere (I think it was on this site), that give it two weeks. You are changing habits and it actually takes 21 days to create a habit.
I am on day 3 and am having the same struggles as you. Yesterday was not my best eating day (I had some fries and a coke with my grilled chicken burger). But today is another day. Yesterday is gone and there is nothing I can do about it. So I will try again today.

When I feel like cheating, I fast forward in my mind to free day. That is such a magical day for me!! :) However, if I have cheated during the week, I feel guilty to enjoy my free day.
So, when I want to cheat, I think about how much I want to enjoy my free day without any guilt and that usually gets me through it.
Boy, do I love those free days, though! :)
Keep with it - if you give it a full week of following the program perfectly, you will feel so good that each week will be easier for you - your body will be thanking you for treating it so well. :)
Good luck.

Ok, yesterday wasn't exactly the greatest food day. I did drink my water (and was up three times in the night to go potty). I did my walk first thing in the morning in -24 degrees celcius weather.
Monday was better food wise, but I missed meal 4. I did my upper body workout in the house.
Today is day 3, and I did my lower body (thank goodness I don't have to go outside again, but I do tomorrow). I had my myoplex. So we are off on another day.
Have a great day everyone.

I have trouble controlling my eating sometimes too and usually it's because I don't drink enough water. Another thing I find that helps a lot is to have soup once or twice a day. Put a serving of protein and a serving of carbs into some broth. Or make egg drop soup. with veggies and eat an apple. It makes a big difference for me. Also I add veggies to everything -- scrambled eggs, "fried" rice, cottage cheese, protein & potatoes, etc. Hope this helps.

Hey momto3 and cubicat - look for when you are having the most trouble cheating. In the beginning for me it was in the morning. I started eating my first 3 meals 2 hrs apart so I didn't get a chance to get hungry or really nibble. Now I like to munch in the afternoon so I've stretched my morning meals to 2 1/2 -3 hours and eat meals 4, 5, and 6 closer together so I am full enough not to munch.
Gum and a piece of sugar free candy has helped for the real bad days.
I'd also check your portion sizes. If they are correct you shouldn't be really hungry until your next meal.
