Iola, if you look at my profile and look at my wt and measurments for the first 4 or 5 wks it is very similar to yours in the flucuation. Stick with it girl, you can do it. Only good things can happen. Try not getting on the scale for a week at a time or maybe even 2 wks. If the fist of food measuring isnt working and your over full try using a measuring cup instead. I found I was over eating the first 4 wks or so until I "got it down"-the first month your sort of experimenting until you find the best way for yourself. I found measuring and weighing really helped. Even though I was working out staying active I think I was taking in more calories than I was burnign there for a little while. Which by the way may not have been so bad becuase I think I gained a lot of muscle during that time. This is the muscle that will come powering through when you lose the fat. The fat wont go away as quickly as when it does on a starvation diet becuase you are also "building" you new body!! Great things will happen if you stick with it and follow the book to a T-YOU CAN DO IT!! We're here for you... Linne

I plan on entering a Figure fitness contest early next year or one in Sept....depending on how I look. I think the sept. contest will be more of a training thing if any. Get my feet wet. Boy I got some work to do!! I get to go watch one here locally in May and I will be a spectator as well at the Fame here in Houston Texas. I want to see what this is all about. I am so excited! I am excited fro Miss Tracy too! I can't wait to hear how you do! You plan on doing any Carole?? You should!
Body for Life Forum Message by personalizeabook (442 posts) at 12:42 PM
Kind of like you..I'm going to go watch one in June first...see how I like it and analyse ...ask questions to the fitness/figure competitors if I can. I've always wanted to compete, it's been in the back of my mind since I was 17... now 8 years after, I still haven't done anything about it :-) I might, I'm thinking about it.

Oh I think you'd do great! I think it would be awesome if you did! Wouldn't it be funny in the future we all meet up at a competition hmmm maybe like the Arnold Classic or something along those lines? It's good to dream big! Carole if you have been dreaming about it since you were 17 you should def. go for it! Like you it has always been in the back of my mind as well. My friends would compete in them and I was like no way I could ever be that....and that was when I was in my early 20's. Now I'm 30 saying I can do that and I will do that. I found that funny. YOU def. got the drive the mind and on your way to the body for it! I mean to see what you have accomplished in 6 weeks WOW you can def. do this! Ok I am done now! :-) Just a little encouragement. :-)

I would love to do one but I am afraid that I have too much loose skin (from my pregnancy). I am training hard to see if anything more can be done about my abs but we will see. I will not rule it out yet, though.
Can someone explain the different types of competition to me? I am not into dance or gymnastics but rather want to go on stage and flex and show some strength moves. What competition should I be looking at? I can not dance or do backhand springs.
Thanks Annette
Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (539 posts) at 02:28 PM
A fitness contest not only dos the physique but also a 2 min.routine w/ dance & some light gymnastics. Figure is just on nice female muscular physique(no bulk) and poses. Now it is to my understanding fitness has added one of those as well. Then you have your straight up bodybuilding ones.
Body for Life Forum Message by JAWI (55 posts) at 02:28 PM
Yeah I did take measurments. No weight loss and just a few inches. I never registered entirely cuz I was to embarassed.
Body for Life Forum Message by personalizeabook (442 posts) at 02:39 PM
JAWI: Sometimes, you won't lose much weight on the scale…but what you are really looking for is maintaining your muscle mass (or even gain) and lose bodyfat… the scale is only a tool (and not a very reliable one). I've only lost 3 lbs on the scale so far :-) but my body is changing constantly! I take pictures every two weeks but will only take them every four weeks now. Measurements are also very important, keep taking them each week to see your progress and also, make sure that you take them at the same place each time, this can be tricky in the beginning but you will get the hang of it eventually. Stick to the program a little longer…give it a full 12-weeks and give it your 100% :-)… if it doesn’t work for you, perhaps you can still follow the BFL concept but “tweak” it a little bit. I’ve seen people change their workout routines to only workout 2 body parts each day, lifting each day (6 days a week) and do cardio three times a week and have awesome results as well….but they still follow the BFL concept. If you look at the success stories in the bodyforlife.com , you’ll see that some stick strickly to the BFL program and some change it some…but they all get awesome results! Sometimes, if you can find a role model that has done the BFL program and learn from them, it can be very helpful as well.
What program where you wanting to change to?
Body for Life Forum Message by SondraBow (77 posts) at 02:39 PM

twinmom: there's a lady at work that had a pretty huge baby (no twins though) and has extra skin that she will never be able to get rid of...the doctor told her that only surgery will help it...but before she even contemplates on doing that, I told her to give working out the absolute best shot and if after, skin still remains, she has that option of going through surgery :-)
YOu would do soooo awesome in a show!!!! Like theresa mentioned, if you're not into gymnastics, you can always do the Figure contest.

I've been so strict in my diet, excersise, rest, supplements. So I was going to try whats called Max Ot. I'm not looking to be thin, actually the opposite. I want to build mass so I've been taking the betagen, CLA, glutamine and even a fat burner. So who knows. I'm really bummed right now and I'm ready to try something different.
Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (539 posts) at 03:01 PM
Ok I hate to break it to everyone Fat measurements can be off from as little as 3% to 5% and sometimes more. The one way to track it is to stick with one method. That way you'll be able to judge if you are having loss. Yes when I had mine done at the gym I was like WTF! I thought I was going to loooooosssee it!

For those of you who live in Las Vegas, UNLV does hydrostatic weighing along with bioelectrical impedance, skinfold measurements, waist to hip ratio and body mass index. The whole shebang costs (gulp) $150 (or $100 per person if you come in with someone). The web address for details is:

I think we're going to try it to get an accurate assessment once and for all...

I take mine a bit differently. I take mine an hour before exercising in the morning. My alarm goes off at 4:30am. I already have my water & pills next to my bed. So, I take them when my alarm goes off & then I hit snooze until about 5:00/5:15am, and then I get dressed & head to the gym. It is a perfect hour later by the time I am ready to work out, and boy, does it get me going!

Outstanding! You people are awesome!
I'm going to give the cottage cheese to the kid, and put string cheese on the list.
One of the things I've found I enjoy is the whey proteien, 2 cups of water, and a serving of fruit (last night I tried a small plum and a small banana. It was surprisingly good.) and blend it all together.
But sometimes, especially having suffered through atkins for a year, there's nothing I like better than a banana, apple or orange. I'll relegate the cottage cheese to the pancakes.
Thanks, all!

I just had the EFL French Toast and it was pretty good. I mean, it wasn't FABULOUS, but then again, I used regular vanilla protein powder. Who know if I had used Myoplex if it would have been different (I know Myoplex is MUCH thicker and my batter was pretty thin). But it was a nice change from egg whites and oatmeal, ya know? I added some butter substitute to them when they were done before pouring on the syrup.
It was really filling though and it's been almost 3 hours since I ate and I'm just now feeling kind of hungry. With regular french toast, I would have been ravenous at least an hour or so ago!

Then maybe it was the brand I used. The recipe said it would be thick and my batter wasn't really thick. I poured the remaining batter onto the bread anyways and like I said, the toast was good. I will certainly eat it again!

a tip for making ricotta less "dry"....I add some egg substitute to the ricotta and mix it up before assembling the dish. My mom used to mix ricotta, 2 whole eggs, spinach, and some mozzarella cheese to make the filling. I modified that recipe to take out some of the fat and now use a combo of ff and lf ricotta cheese, egg sub, spinach, and a combo of ff and lf mozz cheese. It tastes darn near the same and the egg whites/sub keep the ricotta from drying out.

I have mostly been eating clean on all my free days but when I missed a workout or two in my week 5 and week 6 I realised I needed to have a proper free day in order to stay motivated.. so on saturday which is my free day I bought a little packet of spicy nik naks which I used to love and they were so salty I could hardly eat them in fact I didnt they were just too salty..has anyone else who loves salty foods noticed that you cant eat the salty stuff like you used to? I cant... anyway Im getting off track, on saturday we walked all around London from about 13h15 till it was dark from my home to the Wheel where we had a hotdog we then walked up to covent garden where we had the most divine piece of chocoloate fudge cake with a fresh whipped cream and a skinny latte on the side (I wasnt going to go completely bonkers hehe)...OMG it was divine divine divine then up to oxford street where we caught a bus home and I then made some oven chips which we had with mayo (Hellmans light)... it was my first proper free day and it was lovely yes I felt lethargic and yes I was thrilled to be back on the eating clean the next day but I tell you man oh man Im not gonna miss my free day next saturday cause I just gotta have another piece of that chocolate fudge cake!! lol

I have the same problem, I cant't even eat canned vegetables, I taste all the sodium-like eating pure salt. Had to give up popcorn, mexican food and margaritas. The salt content makes me swell up like a balloon. I always wake up monday (after cheat day) and my face is swollen, eye area VERY puffy and my glands in my neck swell up and my skin is sore to the touch. One morning I got on the scale and I weighed 7lbs. more. I know it was just fluid, but I have learned I need to avoid alot of foods now. I was doing the MIcheal Thurman program and he doesn't allow any salt or sodium, not even frozen veggies, only fresh to avoid salt. Now when I have the least bit amount I swell up.
Body for Life Forum Message by rmkkjb (122 posts) at 12:17 PM
Robyn, I'm glad you took a free day - it will actually help the long haul. Although they aren't always a big event like when I first started there is always something I put off having knowing I can have it on my free day. I think that alone can get me through life knowing I can do what I want 1 day a week and keep it clean the rest of the time.
Body for Life Forum Message by Ann (206 posts) at 06:30 PM
I love and abuse my free days! I don't care if they set me back a ways since I'm in this for the long haul.
You all did get me to wondering about my salt intake though. I guess since I'm in my 20s still, I never gave it a moment's thought. I think I will start limiting the salt I eat (and add to things) to see how it will affect my water retention. Maybe I can, like you, start to enjoy the taste with less saltiness over time.

I tried this for the first time today - it is an EFL recipe I got via eDiets.
Bean and Cheese Tostada
Ingredients:
1 whole wheat pita (app. 6 inch in diameter)
1/2 medium fresh tomato
3 tbsp. canned kidney beans
1 oz low fat or nonfat shredded cheddar cheese
1 tbsp. fresh cilantro
Chop tomato and cilantro; coarsely mash beans with a fork. Heat a nonstick skillet to medium low heat. Place tortilla on skillet, top with chopped tomato, beans and cheese. Cover and heat for 4 to 5 minutes, until cheese melts. Slide tortilla from skillet to serving plate and top with cilantro. Serve.
I used the cilantro in a tube that I got from my grocery store. This was sooooo yummy! The tortilla got very crisp..I made it in my smallest skillet, so the tortilla was a little bit bigger in diameter that the pan and the edges curled up to make a bowl. It was so good, I had to share!

I'm adding more cardio, but not HIIT. I just don't get enough exercise in my daily life, and am not losing weight. I'm gaining muscle and losing fat, but my overall goal is to decrease total mass, not bulk up like Bev Francis.
When I do HIIT, I also add time for warm up and cool down. Right after I finish the HIIT cycle, yeah I'm ready to drop to the floor, but I still recover pretty quickly. By the time I finish cooling down I'm often ready to go another half hour at an easy pace.

I also recommend glucosamine. I have horrible knees that don't have much cartilage left. If I go for a short run, they hurt for days afterwards. But with the glucosamine, I notice a lot less pain. The pain I feel is kind of like someone smashed my kneecaps with a hammer. With the supplement, I don't really get that same feeling. They are still sore, but not bad at all.
Plus, my family can't hear me walking down the hall anymore (I used to have the NOISIEST knees....snap, crackle, pop...)

You definitely don't want to cut out the side raises and start doing only front raises. You have three heads to your deltoid muscle and it's necessary to build all three of them for nice symmetry. I actually add in posterior delts exercises because BFL doesn't include them. They are usually a LOT smaller and weaker than your middle and anterior heads and require a lot less weight but are important nonetheless.
Upright rows and shrugs will work your traps MUCH more than simply doing side or front raises. I wouldn't worry about getting a huge, football player appearance unless you are doing specific trap exercises! You'll still have a neck...teehee...= )

Thanks...now if I can just KEEP following my own advice....ROFL.
Yesterday was my first official day back in the gym in over a year. It felt great to click off each body part on my little PDA and felt even better when I woke up this morning and couldn't brush my hair because my arms felt like they were going to fall off.
I was also amazed at how weak I've become since doing my last challenge....I used to lift 25lb dumbells for my overhead presses....yesterday, I was lucky to get the 15lb dumbells up. Sigh. Guess it's back to square one.

It usually takes me longer than what Bill says it should...by around 8-10 minutes. But I often do some exercises when I am doing alternate lifts...like with biceps & triceps, right arm then left arm. That takes a little bit longer.
Lower body is actually quicker now because I am doing Ab boot camp after cardio. Lower body usually takes me around 35 minutes or so to accomplish.
Body for Life Forum Message by beegee714 (176 posts) at 09:11 AM
It takes me over an hour. Usually because, like goingforbuff, I alternate arms and then wait a minute. Also, I tend to throw in supersets at times, so that adds to my time.

I did my first UBWO yesterday and noticed that my elbows were hurting while doing side raises.
This morning I'm sore all over from the exercise, but especially right above my elbows going into my lower triceps. I mean REALLY sore! I think the pain may be coming from the dumbell extensions for triceps.
Anyone else get the elbow pain?
Body for Life Forum Message by JohnA (342 posts) at 12:51 PM
If this is the first time you are doing side raises in a long time, then you probably have the feeling of muscles you never knew exist and the pain would go away as those muscles get stronger. Eventhough the side raises exercise the delts, there are secondery muscles that get a workout too. Triceps are one example.
How you do the side raise? Do you do it with dumbbells or a machine?
Body for Life Forum Message by chevylady23 (11 posts) at 05:11 PM
Yesterday was the first time I had EVER done side raises! I did them with 6lb dumbbells and then tried with 10lb and had to stop. I felt muscle fatigue (that was fine), but what concerned me was how my elbows felt as if they were going to pop out somehow as I raised the weight. I didn't know if the elbow thing was normal.
It was interesting this morning while showering. They should produce a machine that can wash your hair for you when you can not stand to lift your arms up to reach your head without wincing.
Thanks for replying!

Body for Life Forum Message by eSteve (13 posts) at 06:10 PM
Hey!
You might also take a little stress off of the joint the next time you do them, and turn your wrists as you get to the top of the movement, so that your elbow is pointing slightly towards the ceiling - that way instead of stressing the elbow joint in a way it may not like to move, you are allowing it to naturally bend a little.
Some people equate this movement to something similar to pouring a pitcher of water - it's just a slight twist, not something where you're pointing your elbow straight up, as that would focus a little more on your real shoulder muscles.
If you found that when you were doing that particular exercise that you were bending and straightening your arm at the elbow, you were definitely also working your triceps in the movement! So it could be either soreness from working your triceps or some slight strain on the joint...so if you want to reduce the triceps in this movement, try not to move extend your arm at the elbow as much (keep a slight bend in it)
Hope that helps! Good luck!
eSteve

I believe every word you say drj. I too am discovering my BFL bladder every 1/2 hour! LOL My first LBWO is tomorrow, I just hope my arm damage will be resolved by Friday so I can focus on my LB pain! LOL
Thanks for the suggestion eSteve, I will defiantly give that a shot if I get the courage to do them again ;). I was trying to keep my arms straight and locked while raising the weight. I guess you are right, my triceps got a double workout yesterday. I know the soreness in my lower triceps/elbow far outweighs the soreness I'm experiencing everywhere else in my UB!
I'm off to take another dose of Advil before bed!
Thanks to all that replied!

I normally don't do morning cardio. This is my second week of the BFL plan and someone suggested that I drink some caffeinated coffee before I exercise in the morning. Thanks for this suggestion. I have hypothyroidism and the morning is just not a good time for me energy wise until my meds take affect. This morning I drank some coffee went down and got through the HIIT cardio session. I was complaining a couple of days ago because the scale was not moving and I reread Hussman's site (great for motivation) and figured I need to do the BFL program as stated before I complain about not seeing results. I think I can learn to get used to doing morning cardio.
I appreciate everyone on this site. The support and suggestions has made living the BFL way a lot easier. Thanks again.

Hey Wangela, there is an AWESOME product on the market by EAS called Kickstart. Its a powder you mix with 8 ozs of water. Within 15 minutes you feel energized and ready to go. I use this everyday before my workouts. It has 199 mg of caffeine in it and will get you pumped and ready to workout. Now I warn you...if you have any cardiac issues at all DON'T USE THIS. There are several people on this forum who swear by this stuff and use it religously. It really gives you more energy and focus. If your gonna stick to morning cardio you may want to give this a try. Just a thought :)

Do you guys use the incline on the treadmill when you do HIIT?
I have read before that incline will add bulk to your butt/thighs, so I have always kept it at 0% and only increase my speed.
But, I am wondering if I am missing out and could be burning more calories and maybe HELPING my dear butt and legs. I just saw something on TV that said using the incline is one of the best things for your butt. So confused!
What does everybody else do?
Thanks!
Kristee
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (699 posts) at 05:51 PM
The incline will increase the intensity. Stop stressing over adding "bulk" LOL. That won't happen by using an incline. Its all good girl :)
Body for Life Forum Message by thudson2000 (31 posts) at 06:08 PM

Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (243 posts) at 06:47 PM
i got my incline set at it's highest , 10% and i just keep it there, it's an old treadmill that you set manual so I never change it, the intensity is so much better then walking or running on flat ground
Body for Life Forum Message by Rod has changed his Bod (210 posts) at 07:59 PM
Changing your incline settings during your workout will give you a better and more intense workout. You will not add bulk to your butt and thighs.
Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (539 posts) at 08:51 PM
You can get the same type of workout on the flat with speed as you do w/ an incline. I could stay at the same speed and change incline for my intesity or I just stay on the flat and get my 10 @ 9.0 on the treadmill. No way I could do 9.0 on an incline....would be very interesting : )....bottom line speed or incline you will get an intense workout and you will get a nice butt and thighs out of both of them. I prefer flat and speed. I think it is a preference thing. You will not bulk up at all. Yes an incline with a very strong walk is great for the butt too. I never want to bulk up my butt never don't need help in that dept. I came with an already bulked up butt LOL!

Body for Life Forum Message by stacygrrrl (20 posts) at 09:21 PM
I do my first 10 mins at a 0 incline and the last 10 I bump it up a notch without changing my speed settings on the treadmill. I figure I am getting the best of both worlds :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Ann (206 posts) at 10:00 PM
Some days I do HIIT by increasing the incline. Other days I leave it flat and do the speed demon thing. I just try to mix it up to keep my legs guessing and so that I don't get bored.
I've heard that bulky butt thing about incline and the stairmaster. I think you do build more muscle, but with plenty of cardio, you burn the fat and your butt gets "lift-off" so that it no longer rests on your thighs. CAN'T WAIT FOR LIFT OFF! HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM!
Body for Life Forum Message by spartankf (191 posts) at 10:25 PM
Lift-off - YEAH - that sounds GREAT!!
Thanks everyone for your input! I really appreciate it.
Think I will mix it up a bit and use some incline.

I did 15 min on the elliptical on hill setting level 9..then went to the treadmill and RAN for the first time EVER!!! 5.4 speed and only a 1.5 incline, but wasn't sure I could do it...I've been walking the treadmill for well over a year and was proud of my 4.0/8.5 incline walk..but running just scared me (endurance wise). Well, I did 10 minutes, baby and I am super pumped!!!

I suffer from migraines-
its best to head them off when i feel them coming on...load up on advil, have a tad of caffeine, have a lot of water- and go hide in the dark and quiet for a bit.
Once they hit, ice works in conjunction with the dark and quiet, along with herbal tea- chamomile, lots of water- sleep.
Also, I'm a nighttime teeth grinder, so I have a hard mouth guard made by my dentist (not the chewy soft ones you buy at walmart). That helps some in reducing migraines.
ONE NEW thing- i just recently start going to the chiropractor and the adjustments to my neck have drastically reduced the frequency of my migraines. Some consider chiropractic alternative medicine, I think it works great for me.

UGH Migraines! I used to get them really bad when I was on birth control pills...(I don't know if you are on the pill or not.) My migraines were progressively getting worse and worse to the point where I was having stroke like symptoms before my headache attacked (half my body would go numb, I could speak coherently, etc etc.) After four years of it and being freaked out enough, it wasn't worth it anymore so I stopped taking the pill. Plus I think getting off the pill helped me lose weight, too.
Anyway, if you are on the pill you might want to consider getting off or taking to your doctor about getting on a lower dose. You may also want to talk to your doctor about a migraine prescription that you can take when you feel a migraine coming on. That helped me.
Supposedly caffeine works…so you may want to try eating a chocolate bar, drinking a Diet Coke, and take an Excedrin (which also has caffeine in it). Those are my 2-cents!

I drink a diet coke with caffiene, turn off the lights, block out all sounds with headphones (the kind that completely cover your ears) and go to sleep. Its the only thing that helps me. I don't like to take pills but sometimes I have to take tylenol PM. I used to take vicodin but I was too afraid of becoming addicted to it. Everyone's migraines come on for different reasons, you have to learn your triggers and try to avoid them. Mine are fatty foods, stress, and PMS (so much for avoiding THAT one) I also get them if I spend too much time in the direct sun. I havn't have a real headbanger in about 3 months (about the time I started BFL!!) nice coinky dink!! :)

1. I have tried Atkins, ephedra, the 48 hour miracle diet (where you only drink juice for 48 hours--I only made it 24), then there was the summer I ate only 2 chocloate bars every day--and nothing else. That was when I was at my lowest all time weight! I have done Slimfast, Weight Watchers, and probably several others I have forgotten all about!
2. I paid for a gym membership for 6 years and only went sporadically for most of it, until I started Body for Life a few years into it. Now I use my gym membership everyday!

Hang in there, man. You've made remarkable progress physically, and truly good-hearted people don't stay down for long once they learn to believe what they are capable of. You now know what you're capable of.

Chris, not to beat a dead horse here but you have made huge strides with your physical transformation and look 1000% better. The problem for alot of folks though is that they still see themselves inside a the person they used to be. If you take a look at the way you go into things feeling, and apply the principles of BFL to your feelings and other areas of your life they will improve. The principles of BFL being that you are responcible for how you look, feel, act, and react to yourself and your suroundings. I for one have been pretty negative and hostile for a LONG time, but have applied a bit of the principles to my life as well as my body. I made a conciuos decision to be more possitve and to look for the good in each situation. While I am no place near perfect in this I have gotten better and can say that if you focus on what you want and set a goal you will reach it as long as you keep at it. Hell bud you are more than 1/2 way there is you even consider it, so put the physical principles to work in all areas of life and it will change.
Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (225 posts) at 03:00 PM
Popeye...I think you really said it best. Chris, you are responsible for your body and have shown that you can handle that responsibility and don't take it lightly. Just apply that to other parts of your life. Really look at yourself and how you relate to others. If you find things that you should change, then make those changes. It may be that you fear the social aspect because you don't like YOUR approach or reactions. Identify those things and make an effort to change them. Then try them out in a social situation. You won't always be perfect, but as you work out your issues - and we ALL have them, don't forget that - you will be more comfortable in social situations and just like yourself better. And you will see the difference in the way other people react as well. Your frustration and posting show that you want to change things and I know you can get to a point of happiness!!

Thanks everyone. in the past two weeks my personal life has taken a very serious nosedive and a lot of major stuff is happening. I wont go into details as nothing is certain yet. Today lets just say a banking error almost got us evicted from our apartment. We got it resolved, but my nerves went thru the roof and I actually had to go and get a glass of wine to calm down. I was almost having a panic attack. I mean here I am a stay at home mom, no job and Shawns credit is so horrible we can't get in a apt without a cosigner. We are in our last 16 days of our year lease and they cannot have us stay month to month without a cosigner. His aunt cosigned last year just to live here and she will not do it again. I am not sure what we are going to do.
Either of our families have any financial means to help us out except his aunt and she is getting tired of it and she is falling behind in her bills too as a result. I have 3 options Welfare and section 8 housing is one, two is asking my moms boyfriend for some cash and pray I can find a place since I have no credit and no job, 3 is to go to NM and live with get this my ex husband and wife who is like a sister to me, we get along real great. (we are very good friends it is just we were married young and he felt he was not the guy for me) but he called me and offered us to stay with him and his wife if we had no other options. He knows of my family problems of course and would rather we come live with him and his family than to expose my little babies to all that crap. What can I say, a decent guy. The funny thing, Shawn and him get along great, they even talk on the phone so that is good.
pray for me and my family thanks.
I guess I did go into detail after all.Sorry, just nervous.

Anyone heard of Mega-Pro Vasapure tablets? I was told you can take them with ThermoDynamx for an extra fat buring kick. It was also recommended to take it with a low dose of aspirin.
This info came from a sports nutrition store owner who seems to know what he's talking about. However, I'm a little leary, as this stuff does have ephadrine in it. And this version is NOT illegal.
Just wondering anyone has heard of it before.
I take Thermodynamx now and don't have any side effects. I think it's great and I know it's helped me out a lot.

Ok, here's the deal... There is this gal I know who is having this problem with clothes being to big and a certian goal outfit being a bit big now also. She keeps trippin' over the number on the scale but the clothing keeps sliding off her shrinking ass... Sound like someone you know? HMMMMM..... And you know this same person is very lucky she does not commit crimes seeing as she always seems to tell on herself....

Well, going into my 5th week and something has happened to me that I am proud of. No - no compliments or clothes being way too baggy (yet!) but important none the less.
When I started this Feb 7th, I joined the gym and had a free session with a trainer. He put me on a bike and I seriously scared him so bad that he asked me not to do any cardio for a while! My heart rate was SO high after only a minute or so and it took FOREVER to come down. (You should have seen his face!)
So I went slow on the cardio and slowly built my way up (6 month ex-smoker so lungs arent use to all this healthy crap!)Well, every so often I would jump on this one treadmill and do a "Fit Test" and always the results were "Below Average"....UNTIL TONITE! I usually go to the gym in the a.m. but really hurt my back the other day so decided to miss a day (Hadn't missed one yet!) But I think I am addicted - or too scared thinking if I take one day off then I might take 2, then 3....so I hauled myself up and off to the gym tonite, had the most mellow LBWO and thought I would try the treadmill for a quick "fit test"
So - for the very first time, I can say I am "average!" WWOOO HOOOO
I know its cheesy - but I'm proud of my little heart! Cannot believe how quickly it has improved...4 weeks? Amazing. (And just heard from Dr that bad cholesterol is down, too!)
Thanks for listening!
Leah....hiking my way to health!

Leah - I am so happy for you! Be VERY proud...what you have done is improved your body inside and what you are doing is adding years to your life!! How AWESOME is that??? Great results! A lot of people only measure their progress by the scale or calipers and don't think much about their cardiovascular health...yet that determines your fitness level, probably more than anything else. Keep watching yourself get more heart-healthy and the body image will follow closely behind!! GREAT JOB!

(Froglette- try it out! It is easy to set up, just asks you age, weight and what speed you want to use. Just be sure and use the same speed each time I think, so you get an consistant reading! Good luck!)

Ok, I'm finished feeling sorry for myself. After my "pity party" post yesterday I went home and re-assessed things. I definitely still want to reach my goals, I am not quitting. I stuck by the goals I'd made for myself yesterday and I also took a picture of the outfit I'd like to be able to wear for a bit of a motivation boost. I have made new goals for today and I will stick by them all! I know I can do this and I'm going to take it one day at a time..yesterday was an off day. I am back on track baby!
I really want to make the most of the last 3 weeks of this challenge but this weekend I have a 40th party on Friday and an all day wedding on Saturday. I intend on having a normal BFL day on Friday although I might have a couple of drinks at night. Saturday is normally my free day but I'm going to have a normal BFL day until the meal at the reception. My question to you helpful lot is what is the "best" thing to have to drink? I don't intend on going mad cos I cannot handle hangovers but I'd like to have a few of something both days...can anyone recommend a lightweight alcoholic drink??
Thank you! :)
Body for Life Forum Message by ChallengeBob (681 posts) at 06:02 AM
Gymbunny, I'm really happy to see that your last guest has left the "pity party!" I've had a number of those myself!!
As for a lightweight alcohol, why not cut some wine or champagne with club soda or selter? It will allow you to have a few glasses without the wallop.
Body for Life Forum Message by Dan97526 (261 posts) at 06:42 AM
I would think clear liquors are probably the best (sorry, I know you're a Scot lol...so am I, a few generations removed), then dark liquors and red wine, and way down the list beer and ale. Watch out for mixed drinks, though.
Enjoy yourself!
Body for Life Forum Message by Heathergettinbuff (8 posts) at 09:05 AM
im with you on the re-assessing things, i had to do that thiw weekend myself.
as for the drinks, if it was me i would have a dirty vodka martini...vodka and olive juice. have a good time!!

Ave a shanty! 1/2 pint with 1/2 pint of diet lemon lime soda. A Irish mate of mine turned me onto these while playing in a dart league sometime back. They aren't bad at all.
Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (539 posts) at 10:45 AM
hey girl! I know all about the pity parties. They are the type of party you don't want to be the host or the special guest of. LOL Glad yours has passed. I think it is healthy to have them though. We are able to re-evaluate and get our goals in order. Kind of a resetting of our mental program. I am glad to hear yours is now reset! Now go have a wonderful 40th! Enjoy a nice glass of red wine. : )
Body for Life Forum Message by Gymbunny (86 posts) at 11:02 AM
Thanks for all the suggestions...I should have pointed out though that the only alcohol I can really stomach is wine and vodka. That rules out a few of your suggestions..sorry!!
Ouch!! Teresa....it's not my 40th, I should have said...LOL!! I'm only going to be 26 this year...I'm sure I'll still be part of this site when I'm turning 40 but it's not just yet!! ;)
Body for Life Forum Message by Sweet Pea (76 posts) at 11:03 AM
When I want to drink but don't want to overdo it, I try to drink something that has to be sipped, rather than gulped...like red wine or whiskey. For me it's not about the calories per drink, but how fast I'm likely to drink them.
Body for Life Forum Message by Sweet Pea (76 posts) at 11:04 AM

Congrats to everybody! Sorry for the late update; I actually managed to gain three pounds this week. I did all the workouts (and some extra, at that!) and ate what I thought was according to plan. The only reason I can think of for this week's disappointing results is that most of my calories were consumed in my final two meals after work. I'm going to switch that up this week, and keep up the intensity of the workouts.

Thanks for keeping me accountable.
At W4, a total loss of 20.0 lbs and a reduction of 2.1% BF, and 5.25" overall.
I am so syched, this is actually working. I finally don't feel like I am on a diet where I have changed my way of eating to lose some weight with the concern of having to relearn to eat differently when I get to a goal weight.
I have a very long way to go, but eating the BFL/EFL way makes so much sense and with the support and accountablility of you and this group, I know that I will be successful.
Thanks so much again,
David

I can tell visually that I'm making progress, but the pounds themselves are just not going. Though it's great that I'm building muscle while losing fat, I'm now convinced I can tolerate a larger calorie deficit via extra cardio without losing muscle.

Haven't posted in awhile. Have been very busy. Have been eating clean and haven't missed a workout since yesterday. One of my goals was to make it through a kickboxing class without dying. Well, not only did I succeed but last Saturday I decided to really challenge myself and I became a certified turbokick instuctor. This is my very first certification of any kind and I am so thrilled that I was able to do it. I think the next step is personal trainer but I am not sure. Have a great day everybody and stay positive. By the way the only reason I missed yesterday's workout is the class on Saturday included about 3 hours of kickboxing (not all at once of course). And Monday my body was so sore I could barely move. But back on track today. Jana

I went and got my hair chopped last night. It was almost to the middle of my back when I got there, and it's now above my shoulders. I LOVE IT! I feel lighter, as funny as that sounds... so I got on the scale this morning to see if there was any change from yesterday, and I lost 3 lbs! ROFL I just wish I could get my hair cut every week! :D
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (699 posts) at 10:38 AM

Congrats. I'm very happy for you that you cut that much length off your hair and you love it. Sooooo many times I've had my hair cut (mostly in the past 3 years) when I've left the salon holding back tears. I'm really not that attached to my hair or anything (long to short in one cut, no problem), but man, I've suffered some awful cuts!
So ... I'm glad you're loving it! :-)

I never thought of that! My hair is almost to my butt! I bet I have a good 5 or 6 pounds there! hahaha I refuse to hack it off until after the wedding, the very next day WHACK, up to my ears! lol (ok maybe not that short) :)

Cheetara -- yeah, I was pretty nervous going in, but had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that anything would be better than the out-of-control mess I had... I've only had one haircut in the last few years that made me cry -- and it was just a bad cut. But I feel SO much better with my new "do".
I wonder if shorter fingernails will move the scale.... :D

i had a great monday. did some figuring with my cal's and i think they were to high, good food choices but i think the portions were to big maybe thats why i havent lost in the last cpl wks. added cardio in the morning to boost some fat burning this week. i work out after work so every morning this week i will be on treadmill for 30 mins weight days, and 20-25 cardio days. did awesome with food yesturday.
my mini goal this week is inspired by something i read here, im not going to beat myself up and stress about not loosing lbs or inches, i know im improving everyday and this is a way of life, and it is also a challenge....so that is why i looked at my menu/workout/etc...trying to find what i need to do differently to achieve the results i want.
mini goal (its a big one)to loose 3-4 lbs this week, bounced around the same stupid # on the scale & measurements for 4 wks :(
i wish you all success.....we CAN do this!!

So, I went through a rough couple of months after my first challenge. If you read some of my posts a month or 2 ago, you know that I was struggling. I am happy and proud to say that I have re-captured my original BFL excitement! The past few weeks have been really good; eating very clean, not craving carbs and have started seeing some progress in exercise (went up to 25 lb dumbbells for chest flyes....went up .5mph in each level of HIIT on the treadmill-6.5, 7.5, 8.5 - top at 9.5). I am stoked!
After my first challenge I felt so great, so accomplished and ready and rarin' to go. Then something happened...I could blame it on Christmas, cause that is when it started, but truth be told - I let it become the excuse. I got lazy, people. I was doing the program half-assed. I was doing all the exercises, but not progressing. I was eating EFL all day...until the kids got home from school. I would tell myself "one little chip won't kill you" and then proceed to eat 20. For the first few weeks, my body seemed to maintain (maybe gained 1-2 lbs) and I thought, hey, maybe I don't need to be as strict as I thought. Well, a few weeks after that...I was a big blob again. I felt like crap, had no where near the amount of energy, no motivation. I started not liking to exercise and I am an exercise geek. I have always loved it. Worst of all, I felt that most of the progress I had made during my 12 weeks was shot. And it was all my fault - I let it happen. Take it from me...once you get in that spot, it is like starting all over again, except now you have to live with the fact that you let this happen to yourself after working so hard before.
After some great support from people here and mostly my decision to just make the change and basically force myself to stay with the plan has turned things around. I am back to within 2-3 pounds of my end of first 12 week challenge. I like what I see in the mirror much more and love the way I am feeling. I am ready to conquer the world now! I have decided to start a new 12 week challenge and enter the 2005 EAS challenge. I feel happy and back in control of my life, and damn, does it feel good!

I have been thinking about stopping taking the drinks and just trying to eat actual food due to the expense of the drinks. Does anyone else do this? If so, what kind of things do you have? Do you think it works out just as expensive as the drinks?
I hope someone can help.
Thanks.

Bunny -
I don't have them on a regular basis, but do have them every once in a while and also make some desserts with them. I do eat the chocolate oatmeal quite a bit that is made with chocolate soy protein. I eat a ton of ff cottage cheese. I haven't looked at Fitday in a while and probably should see what my percentages are, but just try to stick with the palm/fist rule or look at nutrition labels and try to keep protein and carbs equal. I think it can be done without having shakes every day. They often make me feel sick to my stomach and so gassy, so that is really why I don't have them too often. I would be interested to hear how other people compensate for the protein if they don't have shakes...oh, I also eat a lot of egg whites, too!
Nancy
Body for Life Forum Message by zooman (45 posts) at 08:37 AM
I sometimes skip the shakes or bars and just pick something from the EFL book in the midmeal section.
Body for Life Forum Message by silvertalons33 (306 posts) at 09:30 AM
they only seem expensive when you fork out 50 bucks or more initially, but if you figure it out it's only like 2-3 bucks per serving that's not outrageous by any means.
Body for Life Forum Message by jstone (510 posts) at 09:47 AM
Clean food instead of shakes is ALWAYS a better choice ...
A shake is better than passing up a meal though.
I normally have one Myoplex shake per day, during the week, but it is strictly out of convienence.
My staples are chicken breast, canned salmon & tunda, FF cottage cheese, egg whites (with one yolk), fresh fruit, steamed veggies, brown rice, sweet potatos and the occasional WW bagel or bread.
Body for Life Forum Message by Lovey75 (39 posts) at 11:36 AM
I buy the Myoplex shakes and bought 89 (42 pack of variety and 47 pack of cookies and cream) of them for just over $100. It was something like $1.13 per shake and that included the cost of shipping. I think that is pretty cheap. See the other thread on where to buy cheap shakes and bars.
Body for Life Forum Message by rmkkjb (122 posts) at 11:59 AM
I pretty much only use the protein powder for pancakes, french toast, oatmeal, and pudding. I'm in week 11 and I'm still on my 2nd jug of powder. I usually have cottage cheese and yogurt for one snack, and the rye Krisp crackers (2) with turkey & cheese for the other, I also do the string cheese and fruit.
Body for Life Forum Message by JohnA (342 posts) at 03:44 PM
Bunny,I don't have any of the shakes. I get the protein from meat, beans, chicks peas, peanut butter, Special K cereals, yogurt and soy milk. Protein is only 20% of my diet and I'm doing very good with that much. If I had to get more then I would go for eggs, soy beans and tuna.
Body for Life Forum Message by Ann (206 posts) at 05:49 PM
I tried going with the shakes when I couldn't buy them in China, but I had a very hard time meeting my 120 grams protein without them. Now I just have a shake for breakfast M-F. They are way less expensive than cottage cheese for me.
Body for Life Forum Message by momofthreegirls (302 posts) at 08:36 PM
Bunny, I am not using the shakes right now either. I guess my metabolism is revving because all I want is food, food, food! LOL For my meals I eat cottage cheese and yogurt, carrot cake muffins, string cheese and apples, crackers and deli ham, etc. I will eat the bars occasionally if I am running around in my car. I am a mom of three girls, so I spend a lot of time driving around! It can be done, although the shakes do make it easier at times, they are not essential to success!
Body for Life Forum Message by schelli (182 posts) at 09:03 PM
Hi Yvonne,
I, too, dont buy the EAS (sorry) shakes or bars because of the sheer expense! It is SO much cheaper to have other meals that are much more interesting! My other ones are:
Miso soup (tofu, brown rice, miso paste and boiling water)
Japenese Omlette (Egg, tofu and oyter sause to serve with soy-lin bread)
Cottage cheese with everything! (apple n cinnamon, youghurt, fruit etc)
30g cashews and almonds and 200mL milk
40-30-30 cereal (as a snack) with 250mL soy milk
Homemade sushi
Leftovers from the previous nights dinner (I love leftovers)
Hope this gives you some inspiration as to what you can have other than shakes!
See ya, Schelli (Austrlia)

Okay gang, watch out today! Remember what the soothsayer told Julius Ceasar....
Since I'm in a classical mood, let us say I have my own Rubicon to cross today....I'm going to ask my attractive co-worker to lunch (that was one of my goals posted to the mini-goals thread). Wish me luck!
*And for those of you saying to yourselves "What the @#&% is Dan talking about?" the Ides of March (March 15th) is the day on which Julius Ceasar was assassinated, and the Rubicon was the river he crossed with his legions to march on Rome. It was illegal for legions to cross the Rubicon, so the phrase "crossing the Rubicon" has come to mean taking an action from which there is no going back. Here endeth today's Western Civ lesson.

I am becoming a cardio addict. Seriously. I don't know what the hell has gotten into me. I know it should be 20 minutes of HIIT. But I put those headphones on, and I am not watching the time at all. I get lost (totally) in the music. I speed up and slow down to the beat of the music. I'm practically dancing on the elliptical LOL... shoulders going and all. I know I am hitting a 10. I got this one song that is beyond crazy fast and I get those strides up to 213-220 and my lungs are on fire and i have to hold on for dear life and I cannot sustain this for long or I will drop dead right there LOL. OK so how bad is this? Todays cardio lasted an hour, last time was 45 minutes. Any thoughts on this? Am I hindering progress? Do you consider this to be overkill? I really need some feedback on this one. Thanks :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (103 posts) at 10:28 AM
At some point, you will need to raise your level of intensity or amount of cardio. Your body gets complacent with doing the same thing, so switch it up and do what feels the best. If you have the energy to tear the gym up, then do it, but remember to listen to your body, it will tell you when you've done too much, Good Luck!

I do the same thing. I start dancing and singing (or trying to) when good songs come on my MP3 player. I try to focus through the 20 minutes HIIT and dance/sing through an additional 10 minute cool-down that I do.
Body for Life Forum Message by spartankf (191 posts) at 10:48 AM
I think I need to get a copy of what YOU listen to when doing HIIT!!! LOL
I am practically counting down the seconds on my '10' to be finished!! :)
I think it probably shows you are getting stronger!! The 20 minutes, I think, was Bill Phillips way of showing people they CAN fit in workouts - who can't find 20 minutes?
I think if you are getting more than that and know you are definitely hitting a '10' - I can't see how it would hurt...

Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (539 posts) at 10:57 AM
OK switiching up your cardio routine is now an important thig, If you can go that long you are def. adapting. When you do a 20 min HIIT you should not be able ot move another step. YOu will hit a fat burning plateau....WTF I know is what you are saying. I don't want that to happen! Ok when I started to experience this I either switched machines or I switched routines. I do the 2 and 2's now. start the first 2 min @ level 5 then the next 2 min @ level 8 do that for the first 10 -12 min then do level 5 @ 2 min then move up to a level 9 in those final 2 min 18 @ level 9 and the the 19th min level 10. It snapped my butt right out of a cardio plateau and I def. could not go on a min longer. Music eased the pain. LOL
Body for Life Forum Message by Sweet Pea (76 posts) at 10:59 AM
I'm right there with you...I get the strangest looks from other people at the gym when I'm be-bopping on the elliptical and mouthing the words to all the music. But you know what? I don't care! I may be a big dork, but I'm a dork who's getting into shape!

Just dont' burn yourself out to where you feel obligated to be there an hour every time and start to feel down on yourself if you can only get in 20 minutes. Another thing I want to mention to you...that I don't know much about is that when you do extensive cardio you are burning muscle as well as fat stores...I would ask someone who can tell you more about this. Rock on girl!!
Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (539 posts) at 11:18 AM
You never want to exceed a HIIT cardio of more than 30 min. and only 3 x's per week. If you do a leisure cardio at a seperate time do not extend it beyond 45 min and it should NEVER be strenous it should be light and easy. Never feel exhausted after. Let's put it this way you should be able to concentrate, think, read, and no hard breathing....this is for leisure cardio and you should only limit that to no more than 5 days a week. If you do more HIITS at more time it is not good. If you do a hard and difficult leisure cardio it's not good and you will feel it. The leisure thing is if you want to if you fell you want to do it. It is in no way shape or form a neccesity. These rules have seemed to help me. I started my cardio marathons on my HIIT days and learned a valuable lesson @ week 5. Hope that helps : )

I think that a good indicator of too much cardio is the weights training. If your preformance in weight lifting is not increasing, you do too much cardio.
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (699 posts) at 11:41 AM
OK let me clarify...by no means is this a 60 minute HIIT session. OMG I'd be dead LOL.
What I do is at times I am going at a decent pace like 124-132 strides per minute my heartrate is in the 140-150 range.
Other times I am pushing harder for maybe 3-4 minutes at a time (I'm not really watching the time I am just getting into the song here) my heartrate will be in the high 160's.
Other times its in the 170's and when I am pushing for a level 10 intensity my strides are in the 200's and my heartrate is 180's. This I do only once throughout the workout.
For the most part my heartrate is in the 150-160 level.
OK I just checked my resting pulse rate here. Its 80. So hopefully this is giving you a better indication of how hard I am pushing myself here. Its not a leisurely cardio but it isn't a true by the book HIIT session either :)

I say, enjoy it and enkoy the energy you have. comming from an aerobic background and used to teach 2 and sometimes 4 classes in a day, I find that 20 min is never enough for me either. I do hit my 10's I promise I do, but I just keep going like the little bunny, I love aerobics and love the aerobic beat
so just have fun, at last you are no complaining about doing the cardio, your'e having fun and FUN and FIT go together!
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (699 posts) at 11:57 AM
Thanks for the articles Teresa. OK so the main reason for cardio is to burn calories yes? When I was finished today I had burned a total of 489 calories. Now having said this, does it seem like it was too much?
Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (539 posts) at 12:04 PM
I think I remember Monica saying she burned like some insane amount too. Good for you guys! I am so bad I never look at that thing. I should : ) I am one of those people who just listens to my body. Sounds like you are doing a great job. I just wanted to pass on some stuff that I had learned. And JohnA also made a very true and good point. I would just judge it by that and how you feel. If your feeling good then you must be doing it right. : )
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (699 posts) at 12:04 PM
Kristee and BeeGee, its just music that I love. Any music that you hear that you absolutely cannot sit still when you hear it, is the BEST cardio music and I STRONGLY recommend it LOL
JohnA, I have been able to consistently go up some on my weights weekly. So maybe I am on the right track here. I never thought about that before. Thanks for the tip :)
OH MAMA, I am having a blast doing this LOL.I am bouncing, shoulders going, definite pep in the step LOL. I swear the people who are working out in the row behind me must be saying to themselves" you are a freak" LOL But I don't care cuz my ass is shrinkin LOL
Body for Life Forum Message by spartankf (191 posts) at 12:09 PM
Your ass sure is shrinking - you are looking GREAT, girl!!
Keep it up and send some of that energy over this way! LOL
I know what you mean about people looking at you funny....I do my cardio at the gym in a friend's apartment complex right now (too cold outside still in Michigan!) and several weeks ago, I finally made it all the way through with running and was so excited when I started my '10', knowing I was going to do it. I let out a big WOOOOOHOOOO!!!.
The apartment people came running downstairs to the workout room - they thought I was screaming and something was wrong!!! LOL I was pretty embarassed! :)

I crave chocolate and salty foods. Its been hard this week especially.Although I did resist except on cheat day. And I am already crampy and nothing has happened yet but it feels like its about to.
God I'll feel so much better mentally and cravings will disappear once I get this over with.
ANNNNND the scale will also move down too. I gained 1/2 an inch in my abs and 1/4 in my waist when I had measured on Sunday. Guess where that came from?? OK see I'm getting on that freakin roll again.

Even though I am STILL battling this flippin bug, I went to the gym, totally covered up, wore sweats and a long sleeve shirt and did my cardio. My legs felt like they weighed 100lbs each from yesterday's leg workout and it took me a good 5-8 minutes to get them warmed up so I could increase my cardio. After the elliptical glider, I got on a bicycle and rode for about 20 minutes at a level 3-4, just so I could take a few minutes to write in my journal. I can't believe I am in week 6 already. Scheduled my spray tanning session the afternoon prior to my professional photo shoot, and I am getting my nails/toes done that week also. Talking about the pamper week from hell! lol...
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (699 posts) at 10:40 AM

Udenia, 2 weeks ago you mentioned you hit a plateau. Any news regarding that one? Scale/measurements started moving?
Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (103 posts) at 10:53 AM
To be honest, I haven't measured yet, I am waiting for week 8, I am also trying to stay off the scale, but I do know one thing, the scale weight does have to budge at some point, I can't continue to build muscle or I will look like one of those bodybuilders and still weighing 195.. Come on now, there is no way I can remain at that weight and I am eating right, drinking a lot of water, I cut my soda intake to 1 a day, and 1 cup of coffee in the morning and I have increased my cardio a little bit, increased the intensity as much as I can with my bad feet.. So we will see in a couple of weeks. Thanks for noticing and keeping an eye out. take care, Udenia

Good Morning, I have already posted but thought I would share this with you. I order all of my supplements from Nutrition Express, usually giving me anywhere from 30 to 60% off EAS prices. I love their products but they are EXPENSIVE! So I went hunting, since I rely heavily on bars and RTD shakes for my daily meals, on the go, you understand. So this morning I compared prices, and on BFL website it would cost me $104.85 for 3 boxes of the Creamy Peanut Butter Carb Sense bars (so good)but Yikes on the price... so I went to Nutritionexpress.com and found them for 71.64 for the same darn orde? a savings of $33.21! Now that is worth looking into if I do say so myself! Good Luck!
Body for Life Forum Message by lola (34 posts) at 11:02 AM
Wow that is a huge savings, I should look into that. I buy everything at GNC and it is really expensive.
Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (103 posts) at 11:07 AM
Lola, I use to be a GNC junky, BIG TIME! But I just can't afford it anymore, especially when I am a mother of a 2 1/2 yr old, my mother lives with me and I am the sole bread winner.... Its a killer to eat right so you have to be smart and those bars are so damn good! I am glad that I saved that much! Take care,,,

I think this site has the cheapest prices I've seen.
wholesalersuperstore.com
I think you'll find your bars even cheaper there.
Body for Life Forum Message by Sweet Pea (76 posts) at 11:13 AM
We'll definitely check this place out. Another good online store is Saveonsupplements.com. MUCH cheaper than the EAS website.
Body for Life Forum Message by Kari (34 posts) at 11:42 AM
i wish that more of the onlie stores would ship to canada...the last time i tried i wasn't able to get them any cheaper then GNC because of the shipping expenses....
Body for Life Forum Message by Cauda Equina (18 posts) at 11:57 AM
I've also found good prices at a1nutritionproducts.com, and will definitely shop around at other sites mentioned here.
Every once in a while the GNC in our local mall has a good sale, but I got tired of being nagged to sign up for their Gold Card "membership" every time I went in. There's just too many other better deals online that you don't have to "enroll in" to get good savings!
Body for Life Forum Message by Sweet Pea (76 posts) at 12:10 PM
Just an FYI...I just checked the prices on some of these sites and, while Wholesalesuperstore.com is considerably cheaper than even the other online discount stores, the shipping is astronomical. They ship FEDEX based on weight and distance, so it was $26.00 to get our normal shipment to Las Vegas that only costs us a flat $5.95 on Saveonsupplements.com. So it really depends where you live and how much you're ordering...just be careful.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (929 posts) at 12:15 PM
I've had good luck and found good prices at affordablesupplements.com, fithq.com (GREAT customer service, but slow shipping), and musclemagnepa.com. The cool thing is, I've lived in the places where all of these are based so I also know they're real, trustworthy stores, which is hard to say sometimes on the internet.
Body for Life Forum Message by mj (37 posts) at 12:27 PM
I order from Vitaglo.com. It is free shipping on orders over $50.00. I haven't found anything cheaper but I am going to look into the others mentioned here.
Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (161 posts) at 12:47 PM
Word of warning on a1nutritionproducts....we had to report them to the BBB because of their terrible service, failure to send our complete order, and the inability to get anyone to do ANYTHING about it. After reporting it, we did some research and found they've been reported quite often to the BBB.
I love www.vitaminshoppe.com because they keep track of how much you spend and then give you a gift certificate based on how much you spent that year to use at the end of the year. One year, we got a $90 certificate to use on their products! Plus, their stuff always arrives within 2-3 days and we live on the other side of the country from their warehouse. No matter how big your purchase (or heavy), it's always $4.95 for s/h and you can track your orders.
We've been using them for years and love them. The only reason I went with a1nutrition was because it was cheaper and I thought I would save some money...I was wrong. It was a headache and took several months to get our money credited back. I won't stray again!

Body for Life Forum Message by Cauda Equina (18 posts) at 01:01 PM
Melanie... Thanks for the heads up on a1nutritionproducts. I ordered some bars in January without any problems, but I've been looking elsewhere for a better deal. Mainly because they nailed me on shipping. I like the flat shipping fee regardless of size or destination concept much better!
I'm glad Udenia started this thread because I was also thinking of asking the group where some better online deals and service were out there.
Sending waves of Karma your way!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (161 posts) at 01:08 PM
Hey, thanks....it only took me 150+ posts to finally get some Karma....teehee!!
I consider myself very savvy when it comes to internet shopping and was ticked off when we got screwed with that company. Not only did they fail to send our complete order (it was a partial order) but the box was packed with weird stuff that I'm SURE added to the weight of the box. Um, stuff like a leg off a piece of furniture...and no, I'm NOT kidding. I couldn't make this up if I tried. We pulled it out and were like, "what the hell is THIS for???". Now that I think back, the shipping was very expensive...ROFL.

okay, i always thought my digital scale was off (since several other scales are consistent when i weigh). today i weighed at the same time i always do, without clothes and before i eat breakfast and it said i was four pounds heavier than yesterday's weight. i stepped off the scale and reweighed and it said i was four pounds less. i stepped off and reweighed and it said four pounds more with an additional two percent body fat than it said the first time. I have decided that the scale is a piece of crap and i'm not weighing on it anymore. the only problem is is that before i started the program it was the only scale i weighed on. Any suggestions on how to put a new weight on my fifth week? the reason i ask is because if i weigh on a different scale i know it will be different because i know that i weigh a few pounds less than the 163.4 pounds i put in for week four. i think my actual weight is four pounds less than that and i don't want people to think i lost four plus pounds in one week.....
anyway...let me know what you guys think i should do.
Body for Life Forum Message by rmkkjb (122 posts) at 01:47 PM
could the battery be low?
Just pick a scale that is consistant and start using that one. Make a note in your profile so you know why there may be a bigger change. Just what I would do.
Many on the board here will tell you not to weigh yourself except once a week. Your weight can fluctuate by 4 lbs a day. Go by how your cloths fit and the measurements. Scales lie!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by Grace2bfit (111 posts) at 01:49 PM
TOSS THE SCALE!!!
NEVER step on one again!! Go by BF%, inches lost and how clothes look and feel on your body.
I only weigh myself every couple of weeks using a scale at the gym and I'm pretty certain that it's also a piece of crap!
For the first couple of weeks it said I only lost 3 pounds...yet when I measured myself, I'd lost a total of 10 inches.
Then a couple of weeks later, it said that I'd lost another 7 pounds...weighed myself yesterday (after 2 weeks) and it says that I'm back up to my original weight...UH, I don't think so!
Anyway...scales are like people, fickle to the core!
Don't let 3 little red numbers discourage you from your goals.
Trust how your pants are fitting you or getting into a skirt you haven't been able to wear for a couple of years! These are much more reliable results!
Body for Life Forum Message by emilyuward (16 posts) at 02:38 PM
thanks. i think i will quit weighing myself. i'm tired of being discouraged!!!! thanks for the replies!
Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (257 posts) at 03:29 PM
I've found that digital scales are very sensitive to any movement while you are weighing. I found the best way for me to get consistent readings is to hold on to the towel bar and make sure my body doesn't move at all while I'm on the scale.
Jim
Body for Life Forum Message by popeye (139 posts) at 05:22 PM
Those bodyfat scales are a waste of time. They have way to many variables and are only acurate when the planets are lined up and the moon is in venus or something like that! Toss the scale and use a tape measure( they don't lie!).
Body for Life Forum Message by Ann (206 posts) at 06:58 PM
Jim, I've gotten a really great reading by hanging on the towel bar and only putting my big toe on the scale. Try it sometime! :)
Lose the scale! I've lost only three pounds in 8 weeks, but body looks very different and I've dropped a couple sizes. I finally ditched mine and I no longer need therapy.
Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (311 posts) at 01:49 PM
I've tried many different methods for trying to determine my body fat percentage, and the numbers have ranged from 36% (Tanita, MyBodyComp.com) to 29% with the Omron, down to what sounded like ridiculously low of 23% with calipers testing multiple sites. Well, I went to the University of Pittsburgh this morning for hydrostatic weighing and am shaking my head in wonder. First I stepped on their very expensive looking Tanita and got the same 36% I get at home. I figured that was still high, but was bracing myself for the possibility that I was still over 30. Got in the tank, did a few practice runs, then recorded the final weighing: 18.8%. No way! I asked the guy if he was sure the thing was working right, and he just laughed. He was sure.
I'm going to have to reassess my goals for this challenge. I'd been looking to get below 24% or down to 145 lbs. I've still got 4.5 weeks to go, I've already hit the former, and 145 would put me at 5% body fat LOL!

Maybe not the BEST, but I do think it was money well spent. My sister brought me down to earth a little, reminding me that a goodly chunk of my non-fat tissue is extra skin, and if I were to get plastic surgery to have it removed, my body fat percentage would go up. But then if I got the skin removed, I'd get the fat attached to it removed too, so it's really anybody's guess.

Welcome aboard! You will love it here! everyone is great. Yes, it is important for you to at least take a free meal on your free day. You need to reset your fat burner. See already the advice is coming! LOL hehehehehe. You can have afree day but he key is not to over gourge yourself they say it can cause set backs personally I say the first few free days do what you want that was how I learned and ho I found out one really good free meal w/ a little desert was just enough for me that day. Plus I do not consume the 6 meals that is my day off. When I do eat other meals it is healthy but I don't stick to the schedule that day. I try to throw my body a little out a whack. Gear it up for the next week. YOu have to figure out what works for you. Once again welcome aboard! ;-)

If you crave stuff during the week I would definetly make a point to eat it on free day. So glad you are posting and excited to read any encouraging words you may have to offer. Train Hard and Dream BIG!!!!

wow a reply from tracy. Man you transformation was awesome too. I have to admit when i first read the book none of the people looked like the before picture. Like thier faces looked diff to me. I had my doubts about people really making that much of a transformation in 12 weeks. But you guys are changing my mind. Thanks for the encouragement tracy

Welcome, and yes a cheat meal is fine you just want to take in more calories than usual on that day. But don't kill yourself over cravings, if something is realy calling to you then have it on free day. The whole concept is to be able to do this for life, instead of denying yourself and then going on a binge you can't seem to get out of.

Welcome to tracker RJA! You're right, this is a hugely supportive group of people and I'm honored that you listed me among them -- they inspire and motivate me every day and I hope you find the same.
As for free day, yeah, I say eat what you want throughout the day. One of the best parts of the free day is you don't have to plan or pay attention to what time it is -- if you wanna eat, eat!
Glad to see you here!

Tracy, they now have rhinestones that have a special fabric glue on them and they are applied with a certain tool. This way you don't have the cold metal prongs sticking in your bottom. I will find a link and show you what I mean.
Body for Life Forum Message by midlifemama (41 posts) at 08:09 PM
Okay...I found a link to show you what I am talking about. This shows the heat setter and the rhinestones. You may also check with your local printer because alot of them have the commercial type rhinestone setter and they may be able to do this for you also.

I hope this helps =) Sounds like a great idea!!

dido on the fabric glue. It holds super good and the bedazzler might have rough edges on the inside of the suit when your done. Make sure to get the "dries clear" fabric glue. It holds so well i have actually hemmed skirts and made curtains with it. Good luck!

I just want to wish everyone a very successful day today. I wish that everyone has the chance to do their very best, to hit those tens. I wish everyone a happy day, a healthy day, and most of all a day full of happy, healthy choices! Sometimes it feels like life is dragging you down but there is one thing that BFL has taught me and this is that WE have the power to drag ourselves right back up again. I missed my morning workout because I overslept, a few weeks ago that would have ruined my whole day but NOT ANYMORE. I'm just going to have to walk to the gym (maybe bike if my legs can take it) and do my workout tonight! Sometimes I really realize how amazing BFL is, it makes me feel so good, not just physically but emotionally. I feel satisfied. I've been working so hard for 10 weeks to accomplish something that I always assumed was impossible. I now realize its NOT impossible. NOTHING is impossible. I wish that everyone who reads this post will feel this satisfaction. My body might not be perfect, it might not even be fit, but its fitter than it was 10 weeks ago and THAT is pretty incredible. Have a VERY happy and AWESOME BFL day everyone! I love you guys! -monica

I'll finish my first challenge March 27 but I'll be doing at least 2 more before I get to my ideal weight.
I was wondering how I should do the after picture for this challenge. I didn't plan on tanning, shaving body hair and putting on oil... I figure it wouldn't help since I'll still have 70-80 lbs to lose - I'll do that at the end of my last challenge.
I called EAS and told them that I had never seen 'after' pictures featured of people who still had a lot of fat. His answer which I'm sure is closer to the company line than reality was "We select challenge winners solely based on physical progress and their essay".
So what do you guys think???
Jim
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (929 posts) at 07:54 PM
I think you should do what makes you comfortable. There are a few challenge pictures I've seen of people who still had a ways to go.. but their transformations were so impressive that they were recognized for them. I say do them like your regular pictures, and go whole hog when you reach your goal. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by TJ (259 posts) at 08:38 PM
Jim, I am traveling the same road you are on, I just left the station earlier! After my first challenge, I still had 60 pounds or so to lose. I didn’t tan… I didn’t shave… I just took the best picture I could. But, and I think this was more important than my pictures and essay, I immediately created new goals and started challenge 2. I didn’t screw around with a free week because I didn’t want to set my progress back. I started working towards my new goals right away.
Now, I can’t tell you to do the same thing. Stay focused on this finishing this challenge and complete it as best you can. We all know that you will. But remember that you still have goals you want… and a long bike ride is within your reach! Just do the best you can and move on. In the long run, your reward will be riding tall in that saddle!
You’re already a winner in my eyes!

Thanks guys...I think I will just take a 'normal' picture but make sure it is a good one.
TJ -- Thanks for the input and support. My second challenge will begin April 4. During the week between this challenge and the second one, I will pretty much stay with the BFL program. I'll be doing weight training on Monday and Wednesday,HIIT on Tuesday. Wednesday thru Sunday I'll be camping but I'm taking my bike and will do a bike ride every day - it won't be high intensity but more of a focus on endurance and having fun. I will stay rock solid on the nutrition part during that week as well.
My camping friends are coming out on Friday but I'm going to go in on Wednesday. I'm going to use those 2 nights alone to think about my goals for the next challenge and get myself motivated and excited about it. Actually, I've already defined my goals for the second challenge and I'm very excited to get started!

Hi guys,
This is my first official week on the program, although I followed the basic principles last year with some fair results. I've got a question for the experts out there, the long time bflers. I'm just wondering what I can do, apart from follow the basic program, to get the amazing results I want within the 3 month timeframe. From what I can gather, some choose not to have the free day (or reduce it to a free meal/week instead), some do extra low intensity cardio, some do extra ab workouts, some cut carbs from the last two meals of the day.
So I guess my question is... what added things do you do/ or have done, to get those absolutely amazing transformations?
Thanks for any feedback!
Katie
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (929 posts) at 08:47 PM
Well, I don't know how amazing my results are, but I'm pretty happy with them. LOL
I have done BFL/EFL by the book. 20 min HIIT, no extra cardio, carbs in every meal, and eat whatever I want on free day.
Body for Life Forum Message by Monica (293 posts) at 08:37 PM
I FINALLY got rid of my cardio induced nipple pain!! YEAH THANK GOD! I did my entire 30 min. HIIT cardio today and not even a twinge!!! I went a got myself a high impact sport bra, cost me 40 bucks but I SWEAR worth EVERY PENNY!! I just thought I would pass it on. Those cheesy little sport bras you get at like target are not holding us big busted mamma's in! We really need to buy at least one spendy bra, its totally worth it! Look for one that says high impact! lol
Body for Life Forum Message by schelli (182 posts) at 08:53 PM
I saw the heading to this and thought "this I gotta see!" - so you got nipple tweaks when you worked out - or did your boobs hurt from all the jumping?
Everytime I've gone to buy the "high-impact" sports bras they are never ever available in my size - only the "light-impact" ones (read: meditation, thi chi and the like), and at that there must be atleast a dozen in my size. One day I will suceed in my mission to find the perfect sports bra!
Otherwise, congratulations Monica! I'm sure the guys wont understand but comfort and the support means to world to ladies, and I'm not just talking sporties!

I see a smidge of a difference in the pics anyway. My pants are looser, weight and BF are down. I chose not to do weekly checks as I didn't want to derail based on what those would be. I will measure again at the 8 week point. Been a rough start to week 5...played 7 softball games in 10 hours Saturday then went Sunday morning and did LBWO. BIIIIIIIIGGGGGG mistake. While I pushed thru to the end on Sunday, I could barely even walk on Monday. Didn't eat right yesterday either due working on my truck at a friends house. Back on track today with UBWO (changed up) and looking ahead. Oh and you know what really blows? being at the ballpark on free day, I mean a couple of hot dogs and some popcorn is NOT the same as a nice warm 14 inch deep dish pepperoni pie! Keep on going gang!

I was curious if anyone cycles their total daily calories so your body doesn’t become efficient at a lower caloric intake? I should be eating around 1500 calories a day. So in theory if I zig-zag from 1800 to 1200 I have a deficit averaging around 1500. Has anyone had any luck with this? Thanks in advance!

Okay Fellow Americans, I need your help! I have a friend coming to visit me (in China) and he's willing to make a Cosco run for me to pack some goodies over. Yeah!!!
Could anyone tell me what Cosco has in terms of:
-Protein Bars: My preference is for bars that are around 20 or more grams of protein. 6 or less grams of fat. 0-4 grams of sugar. Do they have any like that? Carb Sense maybe? Carb Control?
- Sugar-free pudding.
- Sugar-free maple syrup.
- Other BFL staples I should know about.
This is a huge opportunity for me to get some real American products and I cannot bear to miss out! :)

Regarding sugar free maple syrup, Mrs Butterworth's introduced one recently. It is way better than Log Cabin.

The journal has charts for food plans and exercise plans, and inspirational stories, recipes, lots of good stuff. Most of which you can get from going to www.bodyforlife.com
I actually created my own from the downloads on the website. I had been bidding on a few at ebay, and since I kept loosing, figured I wasn't getting it and didn't want to be delayed. Since my teen is also involved with the program, I just made a lot of copies, bought a 3-ring binder w/dividers, and we put our book in the kitchen cupboard. Of course, a week after I did that, in comes the e-mail that I won one of the journals. I bought the journal, figuring if I don't use it with a 2nd challenge, maybe my fiance will be inspired to try it for a challenge. (Which is my secret wish!)
It works great for me and my girl. We sit down together to plan our meals and workouts. We only get to workout together 1 or 2 days each week, but the time is well spent. We also grocery shop together, and eat a lot of the same stuff. It's something that has brought us closer together and given us a common ground.

I am lucky with the memory of near photostatic so i can recall a lot of stuff. I used my own made BFL journal the first 6-8 weeks then stopped.. Got tired of writing in it. Now I know what I am planning and have it set down in my mind and just do it.. I know I am lucky in that way.. my wife hates me for it also..

Sondra, you said you tried ebay...try half.com- it is ebay's sister site and you can buy books outright (no bidding) at discount prices- in new or like new condition. There are a lot of sellers who sell in bulk and have not so good feedback, so i always check the feedback rating before i buy...I go tmy BFL journal for like $15 or something--list price is $25.95. meg

Yeah the journal helps me stayed focused and on course, but I prefer to write a daily journal and a food journal on a word document on my pc. The journal is great for planning your next workout, just flip back to your last one and hopefully increase the poundage. :)
Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (539 posts) at 09:05 PM
The journal helped me at first esp. with the food so I was not standing there like uhhhh duhh what do I eat...which we all know is a recipe for disaster. I have the same memory thing as Dr.B it gets really mundane writting it over and over when it is already in your head. But, it really helped me getting started and I loved reading all the inspirational stuff in it.
Body for Life Forum Message by Ann (206 posts) at 09:39 PM
I keep a journal in a very cute notebook with a girlie pink pen. I love writing in it--kind of reminds me of junior high I guess.
It's a little less high maintenance than the BFL success journal but enough to keep my on track and monitoring my progress.
Body for Life Forum Message by Dan97526 (261 posts) at 10:32 PM
I could not, repeat not, be successful and focused without the journal. That said, I am going to go with a different setup for C2. I've had two Success Journals, and they have both fallen apart after week 6.

Here is a sample from the website:
Breakfast:
Breakfast Burrito
Glass of water
Coffee
Snack:
Body-for-LIFE nutrition bar
Glass of water
Lunch:
Turkey sandwich: Two slices whole-wheat bread spread with Dijon mustard and topped with lettuce, tomato, one slice low-fat cheese and three to four slices of deli turkey
1 apple
Glass of water
Snack:
Body-for-LIFE ready-to-drink shake
Glass of water
Dinner:
Spicy Grilled Steak
1 portion steamed mixed vegetables
1 small sweet potato
Glass of water
Snack:
1 portion mixed nuts (6-8)
Glass of water
It just seems to me like the lunch has too many carbs (2 slices bread AND an apple) and the last snack of just nuts doesn't cut it either...
Didn't seem to fit the BFL book, that is all...
I still use the website - I love their guestbook!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (929 posts) at 01:20 PM
I think the web site is a great source of information for people who have read and fully understand both the BFL book and the EFL book... but because of things like the meal plans and many of the so-called authorized recipes on the site that do not fit, it's just too confusing for newbies. JMO, of course, but I would highly recommend everyone stick with EFL for food until you get the hang of it.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tracy711 (177 posts) at 01:22 PM
I have no idea who is making this meal plan, but it throws me as well. No way would I eat two slices of bread and then an apple on top of it. Or just nuts for a meal. It must seem VERY confusing to people. That stinks!

Great analogy! Many people expect results quickly and give up before they have enough bricks laid!! Also, to add to that....going off plan is like taking those bricks down, one by one. The wall gets smaller and weaker. No one wants a small weak wall!!!

Ok...so, there I was a week or so ago, walking into the gym for my first UBWO. I got through most of the exercises with difficulty, (cause I'm a weakling) but got through them, nevertheless. Then I sat down at the bicep curl machine.
The lowest is 10#, so I lifted, and man! That was hard! Then 15# for 10 reps, barely pulled it off. Tried for 20#, and wise person that I am, decided it would be better to quit and not injure myself, and I went back to the dumbbells weighing 5-7-10#'s for the rest of my biceps.
2nd UBWO, I didn't even LOOK at the bicep machine, but was able to up the dumbbells to 7-10-15#'s.
Today, just on a lark, I sat down at the same bicep machine to give it a whirl. Imagine my glee when my arms happily repped off 12 @10#'s, 10 @15#'s, and then on up to 20#'s...NO PROBLEM!! I actually maxed it at 30! I was so excited. I came home and told my fiance, and he laughed at my excitement. He said pretty soon he'd have to take me to Venice Beach so he could kick sand in people's faces and let me defend him! :D
Another exciting thing is that I had a small goal on the elliptical of maintaining 6+ miles per hour for a minute or more and go more than 1.5 miles. I did that yesterday!!!
I knew BFL worked, but I had no idea I'd be seeing such awesome results so quickly. New goals: curl 45#'s 6x and maintain 7mph for more than a minute and travel 2 miles.
And away..we go!

Yes, that ungodly difficult preacher curl machine. I assume it's the one with the elliptical cams. Do it twice a week, absolutely hate it!
:)
But it works! Give it another try after you've built some strength, I think you'll be pleased with the results.

Hi everyone! i'm loving this website. i love checking out the b4 and after pics- inspiration! So I'm on week 2 day 2 of my very first challenge. i am using the BFL success journal, I ordered the BFL book. My question is....
Aside from the three 20 min cardios and the three weight workouts...how much more active can i be? I like to take aerobics classes at the gym (like step), I ski, I snowshoe...Other than the step classes, the other stuff i do I'm not hitting 8's, 9's, or 10's on at all if that matters. Meaning I'm not overexerting myself on these other activities. ALso, I want to enter a 10 K race in June and I need to run more than just 20 minutes at a time, i need to do a 20, 30 and 40 minute run each week to start. How much is too much? How careful should i be?
Thanks! Meg

Hey everyone-
Week 3 down and I feel great. I know the muscles are in there somewhere just getting bigger and waiting for the fat to get out of the way so they can come out for show and tell. Although not too evident in the photos my thigh muscles are already starting to develop and the fat is melting away from the calves as well. I am looking forward for that to happen in the upper body in a few weeks hopefully.
I read a lot of your posts during the week and get tons of inspiration from them. As I get more time from travel I will post more often.
Go get 'em!!!
More later, Jake
