Yeah, well I sure needed to re-read that post by Frugalmiss!!!! I actually forgot about it.
Here I am on day 78 after easter. Didn't think I did that bad over Easter - 2 little choc. eggs but overate at dinner on free day - ie. dark turkey meat, gravy, stuffing and tried all desserts. On top of that I have an excellent dose of PMS!!!!
All of the above = 5 EXTRA POUNDS!!!!.
Stacy in my case its 7 pounds in order to meet my goal. So that means I have 5 days to lose this recent 5 lb. gain PLUS THE 7 LBS. I wish Frugalmiss would post something on how I am to lose 12 lbs. in 5 days.
I do realize that alot of this is water weight and will come off but also I am extremely gassy and when I do have excess gas it affects my weight - does anyone know why gas would add weight? It always does in my case.
Oh yeah - I forgot to add with my little Easter eating frenzy all the red wine I drank. O.K. now I'm really mad; to think I put in all this work only to screw up pretty good on the last week.
Its like I'm a total sucker for punishment. I knew exactly what I was doing but oh well as long as my big fat gob of a mouth was satisfied thats whats important.
Thats quite enough of a PMS rant for now. There's always Challenge 2 (starting in 6 days) to pull it together. There should be section for depressing cheat day sulking.

The Abs Diet is pretty similar to the BFL program. They have certain "power foods" which are all on the BFL list. Meal recipes are given a number of stars based on the number of these "power foods" which are used. The schedule is similar 5-6 smaller meals equally spaced throughout the day, with one cheat MEAL a week.
The exercise portion is a full-body workout three days a week, and cardio workouts the other days with only one day of intervals if I recall correctly.

It's been awhile since I read the book, but you only do 2-3 sets per body part, as opposed to BFLs' 6 sets.

One of the best books on nutrition I've ever read is called "The Thin Commandments" A MUST READ for anyone who deals with food adiction - cravings, binges etc. It's all about dealing with the mental aspect of eating right. LOVE LOVE LOVE this book and it truely turned the corner for me.
Body for Life Forum Message by FrugalMissM (56 posts) at 10:56 PM
I picked up BFFM a while back and agree that it's an amazing resource of information. In fact, I've recently re-loaded it back onto my PDA and am reading it during my cardio sessions in the mornings, LOL.
For me, BFL got me close, but BFFM and LL (Leanness Lifestyle) took me to the finish line as far as results go.
I've always been a number-cruncher and pretty meticulous about tracking things, though.

What are anyone's thoughts on 94% fat free microwave popcorn? It is listed in the authorized foods on the BFL web page. Has anyone been using it for their carb?
Body for Life Forum Message by rmkkjb (169 posts) at 08:35 AM
I remember someone saying popcorn IS on the list for carbs on the BFL site. The only thing I'd watch is for serving sizes - One of the microwave popcorn bags is usually 3 servings...

You know I always would say to myself I should take the stairs instead of the elevator at work. Well now, into the challenge a couple of weeks, I like taking the stairs. It is quite a mini workout. 7 flights to go from the ice machine to my office. Anyone notice other changes in behavior like this?
Body for Life Forum Message by bella2be (104 posts) at 09:48 AM
Yes!! Actually, last week I was walking to the subway platform. Up ahead there were escalators and stairs that you can tak eto get up to the correct platform. All confident I thought "Ha! I will be taking the STAIRS today!" Well, turns out this is like the longest steepest staircase in the NYC subway system. I swear there were 100 stairs. Plus, I did LBWO that morning. Needless to say my legs were shaking by the time I got to the top. But I admit, it felt good !
Body for Life Forum Message by SondraBow (219 posts) at 03:28 PM
lol...I take the stairs everyday. My kitchen is downstairs, living room upstairs, so I have no choice.
The main thing I've seen is that I park further away cause I like the walk. If I have to shop at one end of the mall, I park at the other so we have to walk down. And I never wait for parking spaces anymore.

Ok, I got the book today in the mail. There was another thread on here about it, and I remember someone saying Bill Phillips "Body for Life" was in no way affiliated with it.
But there is a strip across the book that has all the transformations on it, and they are all women who have done the original "Body for Life". Tracey711 is right on the front along with others.
I have only glanced through it and will get into it some more tonite while my son is at soccer practice!
Body for Life Forum Message by getnlean (234 posts) at 07:49 PM
Ok, I have read about 30 pages. I like it! She refers to the actual "Body for Life" all the way through it. She is not changing anything, just tweaking it for women. You know, all the emotional stuff! Like why we eat when we are happy, sad and so on. Also why we feel the need to take care of others before ourselves and how to deal with this during the 12 weeks. She even encourages entering the actual challenge through EAS.
I was actually quite surprised how much I have enjoyed it so far. There are also success stories. Really good ones. Definitely gets you pumped up again! I will definitely continue to read it.![]()

Is there any new information as far as training or nutrition goes? I'm talking about different splits, expanded nutrition advice, notes about cardio, biological factors affecting progress, and such.
It's going to be a library read for me otherwise, because as a single gal with a not-very-girly mindset, I don't particularly identify with the need to put others before myself nor do I suffer from the whole emotional eating thing. (On the rare occasions when I get upset, I prefer to run it off or take a kickboxing class.)

I need to get more fiber in my diet and I think that will help me over-come my sugar/cookies/caffeine addiciton.
Anyone have good, low-carb low-cal fiber suggestions?
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (142 posts) at 05:23 PM
Hows this:
GRAINS: brown rice, wild rice, quinoa, barley, old fashioned oatmeal, barley, whole wheat bread/pasta. No white bread or pasta.
GREEN VEG: green beans, spinach, zucchini, romaine lettuce, broccoli, swiss chard, leeks, green peppers, bok choy, brussel sprouts.
ORANGE & RED VEG: sweet potatoes, squash, red/yellow peppers, radishes, carrots, tomatoes, parsnips, turnip.
Some of these are higher in natural sugar content than others, ie. some squash, carrots, parsnips. Some carbs such as corn have very little nutrient content. Choose sweet potatoes over white.
I know there are many more out there so hopefully you will be able to find some of these that you enjoy.

I heard the oil is easier for your body to use than the caps. I have a question, though: In the BFL book, Bill Phillips recommends 1 T. per day (I don't eat much fish). If I dump it in my protein shake, it adds 120 calories. Right now, I'm following portion sizes, but ending up with around 1630 calories per day, which is a little high, and I'm still pretty hungry. If I cut the portion sizes too much, I'll be REALLY hungry. The only easy place to cut calories would be to skip the flaxseed oil. Would this be a bad idea? Should I just buck up and cut my portion sizes?

Body for Life Forum Message by byebyefatguy (17 posts) at 07:46 AM
From the things I have read. The best way to take creatine is with a high glycemic carb, but the problem is the are usually all high in sugar. That is why they say grape juice because of the sugar content. If you use protein shakes after your workout you can mix it with that, just make sure it is all aborbed in the liquid no matter what you use or it will just pass right through you. Just an FYI you can buy creatine with l-glutimine and other goodies that will help transport it to the muscle preflavoured already. I use v12turbo, But I think BETAGEN from EAS is like that aswell. Hope I helped

For us morons, the EFL book should state you need to peel the bananas before freezing!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Mcflynme (24 posts) at 12:36 PM
Ok, the Hussman site spit out a range of 1080-1490 for me to lose. I guess I will shoot for the middle of that range and try to stay at or above 1200. We'll see what happens. I couldn't find the calculator on the BFL site to compare....
Thanks for all the input!
Body for Life Forum Message by derek145 (16 posts) at 01:30 PM
Another idea you can try is "zig-zagging". Shoot for the upper end of the range for a day, and then drop to the lower end for a couple. Constantly change it up so your body doesn't adapt to the intake. As long as you aren't starving yourself, and running a calorie deficit, then you'll lose weight.
Body for Life Forum Message by Mcflynme (24 posts) at 03:11 PM
Thanks Derek! I do that with my weight watcher points (aka calories)and your right it WORKS! It helped me lose about 30 pounds before I got pg....now to just get back there....
Its always good to keep your body guessing! I've been doing low, mid-range, high, and really high (free day) Just gotta keep on truckin'! At least I feel like I'm on the right track! Don't wanna go too low and put the brakes on my fat burning though.

Either protein pancakes/french toast/eggs and cereal/ protein shake & cereal
cottage cheese mixed with yogurt
Usually a ww wrap with lettuce, spinach, green pepper, ff dressing and eiher turkey or tuna
2 rye krisp crackers with turkey & ff cheese or a bar or string cheese and fruit
Something from EFL
Cheesecake or protein pudding

Here's what i might eat:
meal 1: eggbeaters with salsa and low fat sour cream and some cherry tomatoes, 1/2 grapefruit
meal 2: 1/2 turkey sandwich with mustard, tomatoes and spinach
meal 3: zone perfect protein bar
meal 4: cottage cheese and 6oz fat free yogurt (peach!)
meal 5: boca spicy chicken patty with a little bar-b-que sauce, sweet potatoes cut like french fries and baked in the oven with a little kosher salt, and a veggie like asparagus or peas or broccolli
meal 6: protein shake
not very exciting--i'm waiting for the delivery of my EFL book for recipe ideas!

Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (15 posts) at 04:09 PM
I did e-diets and used it for BFL. If meal planning is not your thing then it really does help. The site actually uses the diets from the Eating for Life cookbook. You can (and I did) say you want to eat the same item for a certain meal every day.
As was mentioned the 'support' is pretty much the same as you'll find here. the real benefit of it is the meal planning and shopping list - something I LOVE because it's the two areas I slack the most on.
Body for Life Forum Message by FrugalMissM (56 posts) at 11:36 PM
The weigh-ins are still required every week, but if you didn't lose weight or actually went up, you get several options--keep the same calorie amount if you think it's just a temporaray water weight fluctuation, adjust lower if you think you are getting too many calories, or consult with a nutritionist.
You are right about the exercise plan though. They only have the eDiets base plan or a REALLY lame plan by "Oprah's Trainer" Bob Greene, which as far as I can tell only involves a variety of stretches without any actual exercise, heh.
I use eDiets solely to get EFL recipes at the correct calorie level. The book is too imprecise for my taste. Looking at the nutrition information on the EFL site, I'd only use EFL for maintenance, not fat loss. Using "portion" rules to gauge ingredient amounts, it is too easy to go overboard and wind up with six 300-350 calorie meals a day and find yourself maintaining, not losing.
Body for Life Forum Message by jstone (565 posts) at 02:43 AM
2000 sounds low.
Dan, we're close in weight.
I'm averaging 2400 (for cutting) a day for the past 3 weeks, and have cut bodyfat by 1.5% and have lost 6 pounds.
You might want to re-evaluate after a week or so .... see how you feel, energy levels, etc.
Body for Life Forum Message by Dan97526 (353 posts) at 08:25 AM
Hmmm.....My 2000 does sound pretty low now.
I think that given as much bodyfat as I still have, my fat loss may be progressing a bit slower than it could be. Having completed C1, I don't have quite the same sense of urgency about losing fat NOW!! that I did in C1, so that is going to open me up for a little experimentation in the initial weeks of C2.
ST, I'm 223 @ 23% bf as of last Saturday.
Jstone: Comparing our numbers, it looks like I'm approximately at the same place in terms of body composition as you were in Nov 04 (heh...and you still looked a damn sight better than I do now, damnit).
I think I'll give 2000/day a week, and if I have no results or am not feeling well, increase my intake. I experienced some fatigue in the closing weeks of C1. I attributed it to getting up at 0400, but I suppose it could have been due to not eating enough. I'm still intrigued by JohnA's refeed idea and/or cycling my calories, but I still need to get my eating dialed in before I go off on anything too radical.

Body for Life Forum Message by rmkkjb (169 posts) at 09:11 AM
Hey Dan I have a hard time eating veggies too and getting enough fruit.
I know that Veggies are just plain good for you and that I need to eat more. In a lot of the posts it says if you are stuck or not seeing results that the major part of your carbs should come from fruits and veggies. Now if you are seeing progress without that keep going and maybe it will be a great change up when you hit that brick wall. I have hit that but haven't taken the time to adjust my eating - if I ever want to get down a few more pounds it will have to change.
Body for Life Forum Message by Robyn (75 posts) at 09:36 AM
On hussmans website he actually says to fill up on veggies if you are still hungry make sure its your greens though carrots are a little evil haha... so I think you can definately have them with more than one meal, they are very low in carb and protein content and have almost zero fat so check out the nutritional value of them before hand...some have more than others...and some are great for natural fibre.
Body for Life Forum Message by derek145 (16 posts) at 10:48 AM
Alcohol by itself is ~7 calories per gram. Almost as much as fat(9 cal/g), and near twice as much carbs or protein (4 cal/g). Additionally, the body attempts to burn calories from alcohol before burning them from another source (fat). If that wasn't enough there's also the de-hydrating effect of alcohol, and the lowering inhibitions which often leads to the uncontrolable urge to partake in BBQ wings, Potato skins with cheese, bacon, and sour cream, and 2:00am trips to Taco Bell. If you are dead serious about MAXIMIZING your results eliminate the alcohol. If not keep it to a free day when you can enjoy the whole experience, appetizers, Taco Bell, and all.

I stick to having a drink or two on my free day. I have tried to have a drink on a non-free day, I budgeted in the calories and everything...Then the munchies hit and eating good goes out the window. When I do drink I chug a glass of water between drinks though and that seems to help a lot...

One tip in working back ....
Since back exercises are of the pulling variety, the tendancy is to engage your biceps, especially as your back muscles begin to fatigue.
Focus on pulling your elbows back/down during the reps. You can practice this outside of a workout, almost anywhere really. Practice , with no weights, pulling your elbows and contracting your back.
Hope this helps.

Okay so here's my story. Last week Wednesday I had an awesome LBWO all my weights went up and I was sore all the way up until yesterday morning when I started my LBWO for this week. So yesterday all my weights again went up. When I was finished I was covered in sweat and I was panting like a man possesed by the devil and I know I hit my 10's cause the last rep was tough as hell. But (I know shouldn't start a sentence with but lol) today I just feel a little twinge of soreness in the front of my thighs and thats it. This kind of sucks. I just started BFL last week and love HIIT. I am not good at running, and would like to get better so I have been doing my HIIT on a treadmill. I usually use a Polaris heartrate monitor, and I notice when I hit my 10s my heartrate is like 205-210 which seems really high. I am 23 and based on target heart rate calculators my 90% is 177, and my 100% should only be 197.
I don't feel like I hit my 10s if I try and stay below. Does anyone else track their heart rate and have the same problem?

others will say that's a danger zone, but I pay no attention to my heart rate. When I feel like it's it's going to burst out of my chest and I'm panting like a dog in the summer, then I know I've hit my 10. I haven't dropped dead yet, or passed out or even felt dizzy, so I guess it works for me. :)~ Jay

Are you a smoker? Smokers tend to have a higher heart rate than average.
Body for Life Forum Message by jaimekristen (7 posts) at 01:00 PM
Nope, never smoked.
I am great on the elliptical, my heart rate never gets past 180, but running is a different story.

Do I work on my stomach only when I'm working on my lower half? And how many sets do I do?
Body for Life Forum Message by personalizeabook (577 posts) at 12:12 PM
Mari... I do them 2 or 3 times a week on my cardio days. I do different exercises each time and most of them I do 12 to 15 reps each...but I do them nice and slow and really concentrate on my abs and squeeze.
I don't know if you have a library near by or the money to invest into books but I strongly suggest getting ABSolution by Shawn Phillips (Bill Phillips brother) Awesome read!

This is the one are where I don't follow BFL exactly. I do pilates twice a week and I count that as my ab work out b/c it kicks my butt or should I say abs. My abs hurt in areas where I didn't even know there were muscles after I do pilates.
Body for Life Forum Message by Jac (8 posts) at 12:53 PM
On the lower body workouts Bill doesn't say anything about working the inner/outer thigh or the butt. Do you do exercises for this? Or just stick to the main muscles?
TIA

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (1263 posts) at 12:55 PM
The squats work my butt pretty well, as do many of the hamstring workouts I do, so I don't worry about that too much. I know some people around here to adduction/abduction machines for their inner and outer thighs. I haven't done much for them at all, I've been focusing mostly on the major muscles. Maybe after C1 is over I'll start looking for other muscles to hurt, ROFL!
Body for Life Forum Message by LilRed (247 posts) at 12:57 PM
Often the exercies that target the quads and hams use those muscles as accessory muscles. Try a plie squat where you hold the weight between your legs and do a plie. Also, the butt lifts where you lay on the floor and put your feet on a step and then raise your butt up is great for hams and butt. You can increase the intensity by placing a weight on your lower abdomen.
Body for Life Forum Message by derek145 (16 posts) at 01:21 PM
There are very few muscles in the lower body that squats don't workout in some way.
Stiff-Leg Deadlifts will also hit the glutes(butt) quite well.
Body for Life Forum Message by silvertalons33 (397 posts) at 01:40 PM
squats actually work almost the whole body, legs, abs, lower back, obliques
Body for Life Forum Message by LilRed (247 posts) at 01:45 PM
I agree that squats and lunges are the best. I do like the stiff-leg deadlifts, but I am very, very careful about my form on those.
Body for Life Forum Message by Jac (8 posts) at 12:58 PM
Can you tell me what you do for this and how you do it. I am not having any problems with the weights, but this cardio part I am not getting to well.
If you don't mind can you give me an example of what you do(treadmill, etc) and what exactly you do on it. Thanks!

I use the treadmill and these are my current speeds followed by the incline listed for each minute:
5.6 mph 1% level 5
5.6 1% level 5
6.0 1% level 6
6.3 2% level 7
6.7 2% level 8
7.0 3% level 9
I repeat this until my level 10 for minute 19 and then I do 8.0 mph at a 3% incline and back to my level 5 for a minute 20.
I increase my speed by focusing on one interval at time. For example I increased my level 8 speed from 6.6 to 6.7 mph last week and next run I will increase my level 7 to 6.4 mph. This has worked for me.

Here is my current Treadmill HIIT workout:
Level 5 (speed 5.0) 2 Minutes
-------------------
(repeat levels 6,7,8,9 four times)
Level 6 (speed 5.8) 1 Minute
Level 7 (speed 6.1) 1 Minute
Level 8 (speed 6.4) 1 Minute
Level 9 (speed 6.7) 1 Minute
-------------------
Level 10 (speed 6.7) 1 Minute
Level 5 (speed 5.8) 1 Minute

When I was doing BFL cardio, I had two basic treadmill workouts. One based on speed, the other on incline
Speed (all speeds at 2% incline)
Warm-up 2 minutes at 6.0 mph
Intervals 6.5, 7.5, 8.5, 9.5 (x4)
The "10" 10.0
Incline
Warm-up 2minutes at 6.0mph/2%incline
Intervals 6.5/2, 7.0/4, 7.5/6, 8.0/8(x4)
The "10" 8.0/10

level 7- 70rpm, 75rpm, 80rpm, 85rpm
level 7- 70rpm, 75rpm, 80rpm, 85rpm, 85-100rpm (it fluctuates cause it's so dame hard to keep it at 100)
my next HIIT I'll try to do level 8 for longer.

On nice days (which are few and far between, although getting more frequent here in the 'Burgh) a few of my co-workers and I go for walks outside. We walk at a nice, quick pace that definitley gets my heart pumping and I'm a little sweaty by the time we're done (though not too bad).
However, the last few times we've walked, my shins have hurt. It was so bad last week that I actually had to go back to the office after one lap around the park (we usually do three).
I use an elliptical trainer for my HIIT and I NEVER feel pain in my shins. I used to be an avid power-walker and even used to run with no pain. What is the deal? Any ideas? I stretch before and after our walks, which helped a little today, but I'm still feeling some slight pain. Could it be my shoes? (They're an old pair of flat, skateboarding shoes).
Body for Life Forum Message by Sweet Pea (85 posts) at 02:29 PM
Sounds like shin splints and yes, it probably is your shoes. You need to use shoes with more arch support as you would with any other exercise. Ouch! The only medicine is rest if it is shin splints. I'd stick with the elliptical for a while...
Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (15 posts) at 03:04 PM
I've found that walking 'fast' almost always makes my shins hurt. If I switch to running the pain goes away. It may be 'shin splints' or it could just be your 'front calf' muscle complaining. (How often do you work that little guy out after all?) I've found that streching helps, and doing excercises that work the front calf muscle does too.
Also - as you said - the shoes could be a big factor.

I have really increased my strength since starting 5 weeks ago. I am up to 17lbs on the bicep curls. Just wondering how much you guys bump up the weights. What increments? 5lbs seems like so much.
Body for Life Forum Message by Corporate Lawyer (4 posts) at 04:19 PM
I think that looking at the jump in weight makes more sense on a percentage basis. If someone is using 200# for an exercise, a decent bump might be 10#. Obviously, a 10# bump would be crazy if you were only using 15# to begin with.
If you were using 17#, I would say to try 20# after you were able to do 12 reps with the 17# in good form.
Body for Life Forum Message by KauaiBound (16 posts) at 04:20 PM
Wanted to add on to this. I have 15lb and 20lb dumbbells and then have those dumbbells with plates. I use the plate ones for the 17lbs. Going from 15lbs to 20lbs seemed like a lot. So what equipment do you guys use? Do you switch over to the barbell after a certain weight?
Body for Life Forum Message by Corporate Lawyer (4 posts) at 04:59 PM
Re: Equipment
I have powerblocks. They are dumbells that are adjustable by moving around a pin. In the set that I have, they are adjustable from 15# each to 85# each, in 5 pound increments. As a guy, that weight pretty much meets all of my needs with perhaps the only exception being thigh exercises like squats. But my thighs grow from lifting like weeds (even back when I was lean they were 26"), so i'm not too worried on that front.
The only thing that I find lacking with using dumbells & an adjustable bench are:
(1) Chins/Pulldowns -- you can't really do these w/o the gym or a pullup bar
(2) Dips - Although I can do tricep exercises at home, I *really* like dips.
(3) Crunch Machine
So, my solution is to squeeze in the above exercises a couple of times a week at the gym after my cardio workout, and do the rest of my lifting at home.
Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (15 posts) at 10:25 PM
I bump weight by 2.5 lbs on EACH bar if I'm using two dumbbells (or if I'm using a single limb - such as when doing tricept kickbacks) but bump weight by 5 lbs if I'm using one dumbbell or a barbell (Like for chest presses) I picked up 1.25 lb plates at play it again sports.

LOL...this is the funniest thread ever. :)
I started BFL a 36B and now in my 4th challenge I'm a 34A/B. Boobs are ALWAYS the first thing to go on me. Well, actually, neck is, then boobs. I drop fat from the neck on down apparently. :)
And I have the same issues with pants. If it fits my waist, it will be uber-tight in my quad area. Just face it--the average American woman has a pretty large waist and doesn't do squats. This means that clothing manufacturers make pants that are a) large-waisted and b) too narrow in the quad area for those of us who DO train legs.
But you know what? I wouldn't go back to my old body for anything, 36Bs and all. I'd rather be 34A with solid Quadzilla thighs and no jiggle than 36B with rolls spilling over my waist band. Wouldn't you?
Besides, excess chest gets in the way when you are hauling butt on a treadmill at 10 mph.

Don't be so hard on yourself. For one, I have more trouble controlling my appetite on days when I don't work out, than any other time. Especially when I'm around the house all day. It's brutal! Another thing is...you need to concentrate on getting better so that you can get back to the gym, and that requires POSITVE thinking...beating yourself up right now isn't going to get any good energy flowing around you so that you heal quicker and feel better sooner.
Don't give up! I'm trying to remember that others have completed this challenge facing obstacles that I have NEVER had to deal with, and I'm trying to appreciate the ones I have to deal with because they make me stronger. If you can eat clean considering the current circumstances imagine how easy it will be once you're moving again! :)

I remember when I first started this challenge and thinking i canny wait to see these wonderful changes, but the more posts I read I figured its not gonny happen all at once (i wish!!)so i think thats why i didn't feel bad getting to week 4 and taking pics, at the end of the day this is something totally diferent for me, not so much the gym but especially the eating!! I would eat anything and always just think I'll start tomorrow, or just one more bit wont hurt but after saying that for like 20 odd years, it does hurts coz you see something you don't like, hence doing BFL!!! Am gonny do this and am gonny finish this challenge and continue this way of life coz realistically if I don't I will end up back where I was before this challenge (btw which is the heaviest I have ever been - except when pregnant!!) It was hard at the start getting into the routine of what and when to eat but I figure when you get into that your into it, but don't get me wrong I enjoy my free day and am glad it is only a "day" coz i really wouldn't enjoy eating like what i did before - och it was good at the time!!! lol
We are in this together and we will ALL succeed!!! Nik:)

I'm not a medical person, but if the edema fluid is mostly water, then that IS in all likelihood the culprit. The tanita calculates body fat based on conductivity. Muscle(which is mostly water) is a better conductor than fat (which is mostly fat). So logically if edema fluid is water, then that would explain the flucuation.
Body for Life Forum Message by go4steffie (24 posts) at 06:55 PM
I don't feel like the tanita scale is very consistant. My fluctuates by as much as 5% depending on the time of day i step on it. I got on the Tanita.com website and it says the best time to get an accurate measurement is when you HAVE NOT eaten, worked out, or slept in the past 3 hours. I can't seem to figure out when that time would be for me seeing as i either work out, or eat or sleep within 3 hours of each other. In my case, my BF% is the highest the first thing in the morning, but my weight is the lowest at that time. It is lowest in the evening when my weight tends to be a pound or 2 higher. I do not consider it to be reliable and plan on having my BF% done with calipers at the gym by a trainer when my 12 weeks is over.

Wow. I didn't know that about the protein bars, but I'm kind of in TJ's position. My 2nd meal of the day is during my 30-min commute during work. Waiting until I get there is not really much of an option because I can't eat at my desk and, beside, I'm always beseiged as soon as I come in the door.
I eat one bar a day on my work days to cover that on-the-way-to-work meal, and then avoid them on my days off. My kid starts craving them on her free day! I told her, go ahead and eat one. They beat a snickers! LOL
Body for Life Forum Message by personalizeabook (577 posts) at 06:08 AM
I'm going to start an experiment :) - I'm going to limit my protein bars from now on, going on forward for the next four weeks, I will only eat at most 2 protein bars :-) Let you guys know if it's made a significant difference or not :-)
From now on, I will try to keep a list together of most faq's and call eas once in a while... see what they have to say on it :-)

Great post Carole! I was lying in bed this morning comtemplating the whole bar thing. I recently switched from the BFL bars to the EAS carb control. I felt like there might be too much sugar in the BFL ones. The BFL bar tastes better though, in my opinion.

Great, Great stuff Carole, especially with the questions of cardio's. From my observation, most people that I saw struggling with their goal are always doing too much cardio. Cardio has the same impact of calories deficit in my book and lifting weight is all about raising your metabolism and building muscles that will burn so much more calories and this at rest and understanding the benefit of weight training will give you that hard and lean muscular body. GOOD POST. I alwys said that not because 2 tylenol is doing great, that 4 will be the better.
Body for Life Forum Message by JohnA (384 posts) at 12:50 PM
Well, that’s an interesting question. Palm or 3oz are just quantities that have nothing to do with energy. After all, 3oz of beef steak are 215 calories, while 3oz of grilled chicken are 166 calories (well, fitday's rough estimates). Further more, let’s say, 3oz of meat do fit in your palm, so technically it complies with BFL. If you eat 6 3oz grilled chicken a day, you are still compliant with BFL, but you just consumed 996 calories of the protein portion alone. Carbs portions add another 996 and you get a daily total of almost 2000 calories :-o. I guess the only reliable way to go is by counting daily calories.
Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (475 posts) at 01:11 PM
My lean body weight is about 138 lbs, giving me a protein total of 138g/day. 138/6=23g protein per meal.
from nutritiondata.com, turkey breast is about 6g protein per ounce, so that would be 4 oz for me personally, probably more than for most women. Incidentally, I also have unusually large palms.

I was talking with a friend at the gym last night who is trying her damndest to beat the leader in this weightloss competion the gym's sponsoring. She swears that the days she keeps up her flaxseed oil intake are the days she loses weight, and she has been following a diet called Fat Flush. Pretty much, she avoids refined sugar, caffeine and drinks water with cranberry juice (unsweetened) in it.
She's also working out constantly (like 35 half-hour cardio classes a week, of varying intensity, on top of weight-training and other cardio).
Sorry -- not the best advice, but it's a little info I got last night that will atleast give you something calorie-free to chew over as you consider this obstacle. :-)
Regardless -- I know you're gonna beat this one!

I may have a solution for you...
Today at my club (Pentagon) they offered body fat measurements using the FUTREX near infrared interactance device. On Sunday I carefully measured myself following the guidelines as outlined in mybodycomp.com and arrived at a percentage of 23.1% Today, two days later, using the FUTREX device I was 21.5% -- almost 2 points lower. We both know that the Navy arrives at its "magic" number only using neck and waist measurements which has to be the least accurate determination
So, my suggestion to you is check with either the gym or clinic at Makalapa and see if they offer alternative methods for measuring BF. Any PRT coordinator is not gonna argue if you produce results that seem more scientific or medically based.
Now, having said that... I came back to my office and did some research on this method for determining BF. I wasn't too happy with what I found. Several universities have studied the accuracy of the FUTREX system compared to other methods such as underwater weighing and skin fold caliper. Using underwater weighing as the standard, in their study, Futrex 5000 underestimated body fat by more than 4% in subjects greater than 30% fat and overestimated body fat by 4% in subjects less than 8% fat. So, I'm not gonna get all jazzed about my results but I do offer what I found as an option.

OK, this is what I am doing,,(1) kicking up the intensity of cardio, (2) drinking a lot more water, (3) down to 1 diet soda a day, and the week of measurements, no sodas, (4)Take flaxseed pills with each meal and do neck exercises to strengthen neck, helps when you have a large neck but heck, that is the first thing TO GET SMALLER! LOL.. thanks for all the advice, I will let you know how it turns out... Because I will need a really stiff drink if it is over! lol

Hi illini,
It is a big bummer that you have to go through all of that. I have some questions and suggestions for working out/cardio. How much do you want to continue on BFL? What do you want your end goal to be, and do you want to make progress before Sept?
Because YOU CAN!!!!
First, the major compnent of this is the diet. Eat right. Be dedicated with your eating and take care of yourself - you are worth it, no matter WHAT is going on with your feet.
Second, there are several exercises you can do without putting pressure on your foot. Talk to your doctor and PT about your options.
If you know how to swim, you may be able to bag up your foot in plastic so it doesn't get wet. There are swimming exercises you can do WITHOUT EVEN MOVING YOUR LEGS!!! There are bouyant products that you can buy to put in-between your thighs to hold your legs aloft, and then paddle paddle paddle. Also, Kayaking (a decent basic used one might be $300 max). Once you get to the point you can do a little exercise without putting direct pressure, even cycling might work.
The bottom line is that for your recovery, find a PT who is good at rehabilitating athletes - these people know how to "get around" physical limitations. If you were a pro athlete, I'd bet they wouldn't say "oh, you have to be completely out of everything for months and months - they would find a way to make it work and for you to do SOMETHING to improve your health.
AND you can still work your upper body. Take care of yourself and remember - where there is a will, there is a way - do you really WANT to do this? You WILL find a way if you do want to. It probably won't be easy, but I GUARANTEE it will be worth it.
Good luck!
Rachelle

Thanks for the nice messages guys, I am hoping for a speedy recovery too. Rachelle, you are totally right, and I have been thinking about that the past few days. Even if I can't do everything I want to do, I can still eat right, lift upper body, and I am definitely going to talk to my physical therapist about what kinds of cardio I can do... I might not be able to do HIIT, but if I can at least do something, I'll be satisfied. And I am going to do my absolute best to use the next 6 weeks to get as fit as I can so that even if I lose some fitness while I'm recovering, I'm still better off than I was before. Thanks again everyone, I'm feeling a little better about it, and I will continue to post at BFL, because I'm going to keep doing BFL, feet or no! :)
Body for Life Forum Message by popeye (228 posts) at 10:51 AM
You are on the right track there, the diet is the biggest factor here and there are things you can do. There is a guy in a wheelchair at my gym so you can work out, and they have that arm peddle thingy(technical term) that you could use for some type of cardio. Don't give up on yourself just because of a relatively minor setback like this, not that surgery is not a big deal but you will recover. Best of luck to you and I hope ypu have a speedy recovery.

Thanks John -- between bfl, working full time, and taking 14 hours of classes at university, i haven't had a lot of time to post....it's mostly in spurts lately.
Illini, I am glad you're not giving up - just think - when you get through these surgeries while still working out, how easy will it be when you're 100% healthy?!!!

I just ordered it at the library for a temp copy, and I cashed in a bunch of points from one of those points earning websites (3,000!) to get a gift certificate which I am planning to use to buy it!! Yes, I've been saving a LONG time but I can't think of anything better to buy with my points, can you?
I can't wait. Am getting a little sick of the foods myself. Looking for something a little different.

Absloutely possible, and a wonderful feeling! I tend to lose weight in spurts, so I get that feeling a lot! I just love it.
I think it's similar to "just knowing" when you're pregnant. We're so used to our bodies feeling a particular way that we notice when there is a change. That's my theory anyway! (by the way, I informed my doctor that I was pregnant 3 times, despite the negative pregnancy tests....and I was right every time!!)
Congrats on the "Skinny" feeling, get used to it. :D

I went to school today for the first time in a year. The last time I was at school I was in a snug size 26 today I waltzed in wearing a comfy size 20. Did ANYONE notice that I've lost a bunch of weight? NO!!! ARE THEY KIDDING? I kept hearing, did you dye your hair, oh you grew your hair really long or are those new glasses? WHAT THE HELL!! I'm not mad or anything but a little bummed. I guess I don't look as different as I thought I did. What a friggin bummer. I have to get used to my new schedule and figure out how to squeeze BFL into it. I missed UBWO today but give me a break. lol I got up a 5 am to drive 2 hours to a dentist appointment that got cancelled and I was not called about. I then went straight to work, after a few hours of that I hopped on the bus and went to school for a few more hours. After school I took the bus to the train and got to ride with hundreds of grouchy smelly people (it was POURING rain) My left hamstring has been SO TIGHT lately you could bounce a quarter off of it and I had to stand the entire 2 hour ride home. I got home, made my meals, started typing this and I'm going to friggin bed. I hope tomrrow is a little more productive. At least I didn't eat the candy they were passing around school. I ate TOTALLY clean today!! Have a great BFL day everyone! lol -Monica
Body for Life Forum Message by guitargoddess (22 posts) at 05:18 AM
You know the same thing happend to me. I thought after 50 lbs and 6 inches off my waist it was a big change, but no. only a small handful of ppl said something but that was after a coworker had told them I was doing BFL. All tho last week I ran into a friend of my sisters who has not seen me in a yr and when she saw me her mouth dropped and said omg! your melting away. That felt great considering that I was wearing baggy jeans a sweatshirt and an oversized coat at the time. It just show's how much some ppl pay attention. LOL I keep thinking just wait, one more yr and I'll show em.
Body for Life Forum Message by Jeanie101 (54 posts) at 05:54 AM
Monica,
It's too bad they didn't comment on your weight loss, but they did notice a difference!! I find that sometimes people are hesitant to mention weight because they think we might be offended. Give them a little while. They'll be able to watch you melt!! I hope your day goes better tomorrow, but you did wonderful eating clean. I'm so proud of you!
And good luck with school...sounds like a heck of a schedule, but I know you'll figure it all out.
Jeanie :D
Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (475 posts) at 06:03 AM
They probably suspected the weight, but it's been such a while since they saw you that they weren't sure whether they remembered you rightly. Or they might not want to offend by bringing up your weight. You ARE still overweight, and it's a taboo to mention the white elephant in the room, even to ask if it's shrinking.
Body for Life Forum Message by TJ (385 posts) at 06:55 AM
Monica, after losing 50 pounds, my wife’s co-workers commented that her new haircut was very flattering… duh! Don’t worry about those that haven’t caught on yet. They will! But you are not taking this journey to impress them. Your goals are higher. Remain focused on that gown and your special day and enjoy your results and victories as you achieve them! And keep sharing your thoughts!
Can’t wait to see pictures of you in that gown!
Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (179 posts) at 07:23 AM
Monica,
Don't worry about them - a lot of people are so wrapped up in their own lives that they don't pay a lot of attention to the details of others' lives. They noticed a change. Next time they ask, tell them how much you lost and how many sizes you dropped so far, and how wonderful it feels! You will probably see a light some on and then they will say something like "Oh my gosh, you're right - how wonderful!!!".
I had voice lessons last night - my instructor wanted to know how much weight I lost - she said "30lbs?" (since last year). I said "nope - 40!!!" with a big smile on my face. You know, then she told me she had wanted to say 40, but didn't want to offend me!!!
So maybe that's the case with the folks at school - for those of us who started out quite over the ideal weight, people will figure we're a bit touchy about everything.
You are going to look and feel SO AWESOME at your wedding. I can almost hear the collective gasp when you step into view :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Xoxa1029 (20 posts) at 07:44 AM
Ya know what bugs me?? Is when people know that your doing BFL. Then they ask you,"have you lost any weight."Then I tell them,"probably not since you had to ask."
Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (475 posts) at 08:24 AM
Xoxa, I try not to be too offended when people ask me that. After all, they do not spend nearly as much time studying my physique as I do. Most people have only general impressions of people's appearance. Really skinny, really athletic, kinda normal, kinda overweight, and just plain fat. Each of these territories covers an awful lot of ground. Unless I cross a border into a new territory, I don't really expect people to notice a difference.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1343 posts) at 08:54 AM
Good idea froglette! that's a great way to think of it.
I was thinking since they haven't seen you in a year they probably don't have a clear image of what you used to look like in mind :) I wouldn't worry about it too much!
Body for Life Forum Message by t_rose (27 posts) at 09:09 AM
Everyone is right, they probably notice you look better but don't remember exactly why. I had a lady I see every day not notice I was pregnant until I was 7 months along. People just are caught up in their own worlds!
We know you are looking great though!
Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (174 posts) at 10:59 AM
I say whatever to people like that! Some just do not realize what goes into trying to lose weight after you have been carrying it around for years! I started BFL on 6 Nov and a challenge 1/2 down, have lost 28lbs and I have only heard 2 people say anything! I even went down 2 sizes in pants and nothing, and to think that these are the people that told me I was over Bodyfat measurements even before I was measured! You do your own thing and keep trucking, you know inside you are doing the right thing! Just smile at them and think, one day they will know as I do now, living healthy pays huge dividends! And I am going to be the one reaping them all!
Body for Life Forum Message by Monica (390 posts) at 02:35 PM
You know what irks me. I went to school again today and someone asked me what I did because I looked different. I told her that I'd lost 3 pant sizes and they said "yeah right" WHAT THE HELL! I'm not friggin lying here! What an #$$ %*)@ !!!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (800 posts) at 03:01 PM
A few folks mentioned this, and I agree that sometimes people are afraid to suggest you've lost weight because it implies that you need to (even if you do). It's a taboo.
Whereas here, we all speak about the shrinkage in eachother's rolls. :-)
Here's my silly anecdote --
My sister in law saw my recent BFL pics and, because she and I share a mutual distaste for our over-abundant bust sizes, she said to my husband: "Where'd her boobs go!?"
His response: "Uh, I think it's just the suit."
Actually, I have lost about a cup :-) since going through pregnancy and nursing and now BFL. My sis noticed, but my hubby hadn't. :-P
You are doing awesome girl, just awesome!

Hi
After reading your messages; I have to say, that plain and simple, some people are just jealous!
Have you ever had your hair cut and the next day someone says "did you get your hair cut"? and thats it..they don't say it looks nice or anything,.
Back to them noticing, where I use to work were alot of (pardon me) fatsos'
and they would just assume you be like them and I guess when you lose weight, it shows how fat they are.
I can't tell you the countless # of times, there would be any excuse to have a party.
Well, thats what i think.
Body for Life Forum Message by SondraBow (219 posts) at 03:36 PM
I've had this experience, too, but from the othre end. Where I could tell someone has lost weight, but I'm not sure if I should say anything. Since I am well acquainted with athletes tongue, I tend to err on the side of discretion.
As for the one who said, "Yeah, right!" How rude. How dare she!
Ignore them. You're in this for you, not them. You've done fabulously, and you're going to keep doing great!!

I feel you Monica. I was at my grandmother's house for Easter and I saw my cousin Carrie, who I haven't seen since Christmas. My sister somehow got on the subject of me doing BFL and Carrie was asking about the principles of it and then said "So have you lost any weight?". I was like "Son of a!". It did suck, but I figured, well, when I'm totally buff and my arm muscles could cause someone to lose an eye if I flex, then EVERYONE will notice!

Hey everyone!!! :)
Well, I know a lot of us are in our final weeks of the challenge (-35+ inches and 10 weeks done for me!!!). For those of you who have done this before (Tracy??), for those of you who really cut the final few weeks of your challenge, care to fire out some suggestions to us first timers?
I have a few questions maybe someone would like to answer (please):
1. A good spray on tanning company - I don't trust myself to apply that gunk, and I want to look a bit darker than the neon white my skin currently is.
2. Is there anything you did to really cut in the last two weeks? Did you change your routine in any way?
3. Did you get a different swimsuit, or use the same one you took your original photos in?
Anyone else have any questions they'd like answers to?
I'll also be calling EAS and will post anything good I hear from them as well)

Oh Wow Derek, SO NICE TO FOUND YOU BACK. I can't beleive IT. Yup, my first BFL forum from 1 years and 3 months ago, from where all my stupid mental emotions were written set back and everything. You will like it here and just too bad that the old forum has always been crashing and crashing and crashing. We would need to found back Miche, I think I do have her e-mails.
In regard with turning Kukoo Tracey, the problem is that I am looking to much at those prof femable bb (lol) I hate them, no I'm kidding, but their pics might be helping me on my focus. I think that I would have to reach 12 %BF to finally see those dummy abs, seem to be very low, meaning that I would need to shed another 7 pounds. Isn't it crazy. Fitness magazine models have a lot of advantages over us mere mortals. The most obvious of which is being "ripped" is their JOB. Imagine if you got to spend the 8+ hours a day you currently spend at work dedicated to fitness. Couple all of this with professional lighting, airbrushing, etc. and you begin to realize the enormity of trying to obtain those kind of results. I'm not saying it can't be done (because you are well on the way), but patience and dedication are the key, and not something to be losing your sanity over. Kind of like that stupid scale.

BEAUTIFUL and FIT Body for LIFER!!
YES, I mean YOU!
Energy flows where your attention goes. Paying MORE attention to your good attributes will slowly make you feel better. AVOID body-bashing statements like: "my thighs are too big." and replace them with an affirmation like, "I'm grateful to have STRONG legs that can move my body." Take charge of the degrading self-talk. Get out of the vicious cycle of attacking yourself with your thoughts. NO MORE STINKIN THINKIN!!! PS I would totally wear the Tshirt. Years ago when I would run longer distances, my friend and i got frustrated, because we thought 'gee, the poeple who see us at the end of our run might only think we have run for half a mile and look like THIS!" so we got Tshirts made, and on the back they said "you have no idea how far I've come...and how far I have yet to go!" Reminds me of BFL in a way!

So, I had to give her a little knowledge and tell her that The Roots is a music group-reggae rap type stuff. I think that may be what JohnA is referring to.

My alarm woke me up from a dead sleep. I mean I was in the middle of a dream kicking somebody's butt! lol. It took me a good 15 minutes to see clear, Now that is sleeping hard and when I got to the gym, I jumped on the elliptical as usual and got 15 minutes into my workout and felt nauseous! That has NEVER happened to me, guess my body is trying to tell me something, so I didn't push it, got off the glider and moved to the treadmill and power walked for 45 minutes. Still didn't burn as many calories as I would have with the elliptical but I started to feel better. Man, where did that come from? Anyway, took the hint and Upper Body is tomorrow, looking forward to seeing my Bi's and Tri's working.

I don't know if this is true or not but one of the trainers at my gym told me if you get nauseous sometimes it is because you are not drinking enough water while you are working out. ok. so i know i'm not very active on the boards but i read them all the time. yesterday i almost quit BFL because i am so frustrated. I've been following the book to the letter and seeing no results. From reading and reading and reading i'm slowly learning that i've been sabatoging my progress little by little without knowing it. your free day is a free day--but in reality, you shouldn't binge. And the 6 meal a day with fist sized portions is correct--but in reality, you should create a caloric deficit (i.e. count calories). And then I learned yesterday that the protein bars i've been eating aren't so good for you. And I should get my carbs from veggies and fruits more often as opposed to whole grains.
And then there are those ladies who are seeing results but it turns out they are doing more than 20 minutes HIIT. I just want to know the bottom line and I'll do it.
BUT today is a new day. I worked out and have decided to try and cool it on my free day--maybe 1 free meal instead of binging the whole day. I'm in the process of finding out what my caloric intake should be--Hussman says 1050-1399 (which seems like a really big range) but i'm not sure i did it right. As for the exercise--i'm sticking with the plan. I don't know what my point with this post is. Guess I'm just venting. I just wish these little details had been outlined somewhere earlier so that I could've avoided all these "mistakes." Thanks for listening.
Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (174 posts) at 11:09 AM
How far are you into the program? Trust me when I say this, it takes your body some time to adjust to your new life style, took me 4 weeks to see any drop in weight or BF and it was a small drop but I looked great,,, and then I stagnated for 3 weeks and now the weight is coming off in steady incremements. Go with the portion rule and I don't know about the bars because I eat one every morning because it has balanced carbs and proteins and that is what I start my day off with. Increased my water intake and really concentrate on holding my ABS in for 10-15 sec intervals and relaxing. I do that through-out the day and in addition, keeping a positive attitude goes a LONG WAY. Keep your chin up, and it will happen. I am here anytime you need to talk...

I am not doing and never have done more than 20 minutes of HIIT. I have created a caloric deficit, however, and I have a hard time doing that with the fist thing. I watched things closely for several weeks and measured and then I started to learn what my portion sizes should be for my caloric deficit. I think you just need to remember that the bars are great if you are in a rush or on the go. I love some of them and they are GREAT as one of my snacks when I am craving chocolate. I felt so frustrated at week 4 and felt like there were so few changes, so I did some reading and learning like you have and adjusted things and by week 8, I was starting to feel better. Hang in there!! You've still been creating muscle, so apply what you've learned and keep going. The results will come!! Kim

Body for Life Forum Message by Jeanie101 (54 posts) at 11:17 AM
jenjen,
I know how frustrating it can be when the results don't seem to happen, but it begins on the inside and sometimes isn't visible for a couple of weeks. Take 4 week pictures and compare them, sometimes it's easier to see the changes that way.
As for the "mistakes" you're talking about....well I don't see any. I follow the book. I don't do extra cardio (I'm lucky to get the 20 minutes it calls for), I never count calories (I love that I don't have to do that), I have protein bars A LOT!, and I really enjoy my free days (really!!).
My point is, I have lost 24 pounds so far, and that's only scale weight. I don't think you are doing anything wrong if you are following the plan the way it says. I know some people add extra and combine different programs, but if you follow the BFL Plan the way it says, it will work!!
Please stay with it for a few more weeks and take those 4 week pics! Make sure to post them, because sometimes we need an unbiased opinion to really let us know how well we're doing.
Hang in there, it will come!
Jeanie

You ARE seeing progress - you're down 3lbs in 3 weeks!
I know I already told you what I think, but here's some more: If you follow the books, you will succeed. The people who say get more of your carbs from fruits and vegetables than from whole grains... well, that works for THEM, but it does not mean if you are eating whole grains you are sabotaging yourself. Bill Phillips says eat whole grains, so that's what I do and I'm seeing results just fine. People who do more than 20 minutes HIIT, that's their choice and if it works for them, great, but I only do 20 minutes, 3 times a week, and I'm seeing results just fine. The fist/palm method will work fine, too... for me it does create a caloric deficit (I don't count calories before I eat, but I do track my eating and see what it comes out to afterwards) to do it that way. And free day? Yep, I eat all day, whatever I want.
You are not sabotaging yourself at all. 3lbs in 3 weeks is great progress, especially considering you don't have much to lose in the first place. It's gonna come off slow, but it's gonna come off, and if you stick with it, you will feel GREAT!
:)

I agree with all of the above! LOL Really do make sure you don't go under 1200 calories though, or you will send your body into starvation mode and that WILL sabotage your progress. You will see results I promise! I thought I wasn't seeing any until I actually finished the 12 weeks and compared my pictures then I could really see a difference! I only started doing extra cardio this week, and I start challenge 2 next week. the reason I added is that I am training for a triathlon and am using the triathlon training as a guideline for my cardio. Like everyone says, you have to find what works best for you. Hang in there and you will see results!

I know it is frustrating!! I have a hard time loosing weight. But looking at your profile, you really do not have a lot to loose so it will get tougher as we near or weight goal. But you just need to get tougher too. I really do think that you have to find what works for you. Some do more cardio some dont, some eat the bars and some dont, some stay away form carbs and some dont. But the bottom line i think is to follow the book the first 12 weeks and maybe the second challenge maybe you could tweek things a little. That is what i am going to do anyway. I know it does seem very confusing but i do believe that Mr. Phillips wanted this plan to be as simple as possible because God knows that life is complicated by itself we do not need another diet plan making it more complicated (run on sentence ha ha). Just hang in there and be proud that you have lost 3lbs, that averages out to 1lb. a week. I wish i could say that, i am in week 4 and i have gained and lost the same 2lbs. But i refuse to give up hope, i will continue on.
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicci (34 posts) at 08:18 PM
LilRed, I'm so glad you said that about not creating a calorie deficit with the portion/fist thing. Right now, I'm getting about 1600 cal./day, which is a little high, and I figure I'm going to have to tweak my portions a little. I guess that's what happens when you have big ol' honkin' hands like mine.

Body for Life Forum Message by stacygrrrl (55 posts) at 09:12 PM
Hang in there! I do extra cardio but only low intensity (I have two toddlers so it is more for my mental health than anything else). I am counting my calories this time around, but my first challenge I didn't count them at all, did the hand/fist method. I don't think there is such as a thing as making mistakes, it is all learning and learning what works best for you. I know I sure haven't figured out what works best for me yet :) I think I might be "tweaking" my diet for the rest of my life :)
Body for Life Forum Message by jenjen-a-go-go (6 posts) at 09:20 PM
i guess i should mention that the cause of some of this freakout was that my weight was back up to the weight I began with. But still, all your comments have made me feel so much better. I'm just going to stick with the plan and see what happens. I like the idea of adding up my calories at the end of the day. I know if I start diligently counting calories I might burn out. The fact that you don't have to count calories is one of the things that attracted me to this so much in the first place. I'm going to stick with it.
I had a thought--maybe binging on my free day--eating all that crappy food-- makes me cranky and depressed the next day and more prone to freaking out and wanting to quit. hmmmm.
Body for Life Forum Message by fitb42long (899 posts) at 10:12 PM
jenjen-a tip from me and my experience with the extra cardio thing. I tried it for a 2 week period as a little experiment. I lost 4 lbs. over a 3 week period, but I actually lost more lean mass than fat. That was the one and only time during the 12 weeks that I lost any lean mass and I am convinced that it was due to the extra cardio. So, I'm definitely steering clear of that this time-no extra cardio for me.
Body for Life Forum Message by schelli (214 posts) at 11:14 PM
Jen,
I recommend getting your body fat tested. If you go to the BFL web site a lot of the sucess stories saw little change on the scale but massive changes in there appearance and the scales just dont tell the story.
There are a few online ones (like mybodycomp) so you can do it in the privacy of your own home and as often as you like.
Hope this helps!
Body for Life Forum Message by eSteve (46 posts) at 11:59 PM
Hi Jen,
Well I'm about to contradict Tracy a little here, but that doesn't mean I disagree with her! She definitely knows what she's doing! This is just my own opinion...
I really am not an advocate of the "pig out" style free day...it is in my opinion the wrong way to think of free days!
I'm sorry if I always repeat this and people get tired of my opinion on it! Anyhow here's what I think about free days:
1) It's very easy to get into the mindset where you are looking forward to your free day (as you should), and pre-meditating your attack on food! What I mean by this is you might go a little overboard on what you plan to eat - like planning on going to a breakfast buffet and just pigging out! Once you have this planned, there is very little chance of changing your mind - you will do it because you've built it up to be this great reward for all your hard work! I prefer not to pre-plan a free day, and see what happens as it comes.
2) Free days are for eating things you really feel like having, not for eating EVERYTHING (and too much of it) - just because you think you can! Just be very aware of your urges, and give in to them, but not overextend them -- for example, if you want pizza, have a couple of pieces - don't order a whole pie (you have to make an effort to know what is a good idea and what isn't). Go to a place where they serve pizza by the slice. Order 2 pieces (or even just one). See if you're satisfied. Don't order a whole pie and sit in front of it, because you'll just keep on eating! I think it's a better idea to give into urges on your free day, but take baby steps into it, and stay keenly aware of when you think you've had enough...then stop! You'll feel much better at the end of the day, and you won't have gained back 2 or 3 pounds (where this is such a challenge to lose each week!)
3) Free days can absolutely make or break your results! While there is some truth to keeping your body guessing so it doesn't slow down your metabolism - there comes a point where you can do some serious damage (meaning gaining a bunch of fat), if you are overeating on your free day. I don't feel there's a strong argument against this actually -- if you eat 5000 calories in a day there are going to be consequences!
This is as much a mental game as a physical one -- you need to take counter-measures way in advance to get through each day.
There is also no doubt in my mind that extra cardio will speed up your results -- however, as you just begin your program, overdoing it on the exercise can result in injury or mental resistance to so much effort. So it's not wise to go overboard on the cardio from the outset. Also, as many recommend, doing HIIT cardio too often is definitely not good for you -- too much stress on the body. So extra cardio in moderation and lower intensity levels are something to consider if you are not seeing the results you want. This absolutely varies from person to person, so some people many not need the extra cardio!
Anyhow, perhaps Tracy and I will continue our free day debate on the cruise! ;)
Good luck! Hope that is helpful.
eSteve

The problem it seems with this program is that people are putting themselves on a 12 week schedule. On this board the most succesful people seem to be the ones that are giving themselves more time. Say like 3 and 4 challenges. They know they have a ways to go and thats it. But too many people seem to be getting caught up at thier progress in week 4 or week 8. I think they should come out with another contest for like a year. That way people wotn be so stressed when they dont look like the jumpstart champion after 4 weeks. I just got done 4 weeks. I dont look like a jumpstart champion or anywhere near my goal for the cover of mens health, but you knwo what WHO CARES. I feel better then i do 4 weeks ago and i gaurantee no matter what that friggin scale says, or my friends say, or even the cameras says ill feel better a year from now if i stick to this then i would if i didnt't. So every one sais forget the scale i say forget the 12 weeks

You know...I was thinking something along those lines earlier this morning. How do those BFLer's that have reached their goals continue to stay so motivated?
Body for Life Forum Message by LilRed (247 posts) at 11:33 AM
I think the point of 12 weeks is to see that you really can make a big change in your body in as little as 12 weeks. Maybe you haven't reached your final goal, but you've done a lot.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1343 posts) at 11:36 AM
To stay motiviated I find one of the best things for me is to keep setting goals.
Even if you have met one set of goals, there is always something else! Not just weight goals, or BF goals, but lifting goals, cardio goals, personal goals :D
Examples I use is to try to increase me weights, impmrove in my cardio, promise myself to learn new songs on my guitar, work on stretching and flexibility.
Your goals can be anything you want! Dream big and aim high! ;)

RJA you are right, I am using my 12 weeks as a starting point, 12 weeks to get myself back in enough shape to do and get to where I want to be . I figured out 1st challenge 12 weeks to get movitated, get limber, get self confidence back and get moving again. To loose some extra lbs and feel better 2nd challenge is to tone and and loose some of the actuall boby fat
and 3rd challenge is to G E T R I P P ED !!! then I will use the Body for Life system just as it is intended to be used a system for Life to Keep the body you have and want for the rest of my life.
Body for Life Forum Message by personalizeabook (577 posts) at 11:44 AM
You stay motivated by setting new goals, for instance, you want to run a little faster, you want to perhaps get stronger... you constantly set yourself new goals, etc.
Also, no matter how many times you do a new challenge, there's always something that you want to improve or make better.
For me, what keeps me going, even if I haven't completed one challenge yet, is to be able to inspire other people! I want to teach other people the Body-for-Life program, pass on my experience and knowledge to them and I learn from them as well!
Body for Life Forum Message by personalizeabook (577 posts) at 11:48 AM
Also, Body-for-Life is about kicking the bad habits to the curb and replace them with new healthy ones. :-)
You won't see me quit after my first 12-weeks...you will see me 5 years from now, still following the same principles of eating healthy and working out!
I knew the basics of working out, nutrition and supplementation but didn't know how to put it all together until I started BFL. :-)
Body for Life Forum Message by RJA733 (46 posts) at 11:51 AM
BFL Is a great program, the best in my opinion I just wish people didn't get so discouraged. Once you see the light you want other too also. I think thats why wonderful people like tracy who have made that transformation continue to motivate others. I just hope someone reads some of these replies and says you knwo what im sticking to it no matter what
Body for Life Forum Message by ChrisA (29 posts) at 12:34 PM
Great thread- I have found the key to sticking with the program is making it as easy and convenient as possible to follow. It's easy to make excuses and miss going to the gym, so I joined one right next to my office so I can go right before or after work, no problem. I'm not a big fan of cooking, so I make a big pot of rice & vegetables and some grilled chicken breasts, and put them in about 8-10 ziploc containers and freeze them, then I don't have to think about lunch.
The only problem with this is that consistency breeds complacency- I'm coming up on the end of the 3rd cycle and need to focus on new goals. I didn't do as good a job this time in setting and sticking to goals, sort of went on autopilot, and while there was some progress I definitely could do better for next time. Anyone have more good insights for setting goals the 2nd, 3rd, 4th time round?
Chris

I think the first 12 weeks is to get you going. People can sometimes think this is a miracle diet and it is not. It is exactly what the title says Body-for-Life. But the Challenge is for 12 weeks can you make it 12 weeks? If you can then you will have a foundation built to keep progressing and competing in more Challenges or maintaining or on to better and bigger things. Having segments where you can attain goals. I also think it is a form of great discipline w/ lots of structure. It makes it more structured esp. for some of us structurally challenged people. (i.e. Me) So it is easy to set mini goals to achieve grand goals. But all the building blocks (weeks) help. And also having an end or a deadline applies the pressure to give us the need to strive for our best each and everyday. Once you reach your grand goal you continue to keep it or even better than that try to achieve more than that.
Also, I know I will not be at my grand goal. But don't get me wrong. I am very happy w/ what I have achieved these past 10 1/2 weeks. I have proved to myself what I have and can do! And in return I can help others too achieve this sense of self worth and achievement. I am now not in it for the sole purpose of winning a million (would be nice) but my want of doing this has developed into so much more. I believe your 1st 12 weeks is a test and a journey. And guess what RJA733 "I'm sticking with it no matter what!" ; ) Teresa

Sometimes people get caught up in the whole physical transformation and the 1st 6 weeks people should focus on the mental transformation because that "IS" the most important part of this. You have to go mental before the physical will come. And that mental strength will get you through the toughest workouts and toughest temptations! Good for you RJA733 you're getting it! You are doing a GREAT job! Keep it up!

I think the purpose of "12 weeks" is that it is is a manageable goal. It is much easier to commit yourself to something for 12 weeks than for 52. At the end of the 12 weeks, you end up feeling so good that you want to continue. When you see people discouraged about 4 or 8 week progress, it is just venting for the most part. The nice thing about the tracker is that you can vent here and a lot of other people feel the same way. we all want quick results, but we know in our hearts it takes time to undo months of abuse to our bodies. The bottom line is, big changes can be made in 12 weeks, as long as you stay focused on the bigger goal which may be a year or more! 12 weeks is just a starting point!

I guess youre right about the venting that does help. I guess when i read people saying they might quit im shocked. Like someone asked me the other day what day are you on and how much longer. I said im on day 21 of forever and ill stop when im dead. Of course the cover of mens health would be nie before i die but i digress

After just the first few days of my challenge, I knew this was a life changing decision. No matter how big or small my results are or were, I will continue this program until they put me in the dirt. And if I follow the program, that dirt is a long ways away.
What drives me nutts is hearing people talk about ONLY doing this for 12 weeks. I'm SO glad to see that once they hit it, that a lot of people want to keep going.
Don't even get me started on the whole 'wagon' analogy. Good lord--strap yourself in that sucker and DON'T LET GO!
I believe that this program is 80% nutrition as well as 110% determination and a heck of a lot of sweat!!!
On a daily basis, I come up with NEW reasons for my weight loss and new modes of motivation. All of my old reasons and new ones combined keep me totally revved up to accomplish my fitness goals.
I'm just so glad that BFL found me. And I really mean that. A friend at work told me to buy the book when I asked him about a weight loss program. He just put that GIFT in my hands. I haven't looked back since.
Now it's my job to take the tools given to me in the book to MAKE IT HAPPEN and share the gift with others.
Since I started, two other girlfriends have started the program after seeing my results. It feels so GOOD to be an example of the program and help others!

Life time motivation and long term goals. Challenge 1, lose the fat, challenge 2, get the bulk and the Abs in order, challenge 3 work on the sculpting and not over do it, I do not want to end up looking like Arnold did in his prime. Probably around C2 I will look at what I am going to do for C4 and beyond. How many times have you heard this is a LIFE style change, I have had it drilled into my head sooo many times. Also, take a look at the profiles of the people that "did it" back in 2000 and are back into it now. They all can't wait to get back into the program and regret ever stopping. Have your next goal before you complete your current and we should all be in good shape!!!
More later, Jake

I feel the same way, RJA. Believing in my heart that this is the beginning of a new, positive lifestyle for myself was what allowed me to finish my first challenge. Had I stressed over the timeframe, I'd have quit after four weeks. :-)

Motivation definitely changes as one travels through the lifestyle changes associated with BFL. My first challenge, I was singularly focused… on me. My weight, my eating habits, my waist size, blah, blah, blah. Geeze, what an ego! Somewhere near the end of my second challenge I realized that the ‘me’ focus was nearly all gone and I started looking around me and seeing others. I saw people that were unhappy with their bodies and this unhappiness was ruining their lives. For them, life was no longer fun. I realized that I had a key to help them improve their lives IF they wanted... a key to helping them unlock their hidden potential! And I was doing them a disservice by 'hiding' it from them. I realized that I couldn’t keep it to myself. I had to crawl out of my shell and brag about the BFL lifestyle and show - BY EXAMPLE - that anyone can be successful at BFL if they set their minds to it. By the end of my third challenge, I was focused more at helping others than I am in my own transformation. Now, I want to continue to improve my body, mind and spirit as a way to show others that there is hope for them to improve their lives.
My ‘new’ motivation: help at least 1,000 people improve their minds, bodies and spirits using BFL as the launching pad and to hopefully become a good example that provides others motivation and optimism as they improve their lives. Or, to sum it up in two words… SPREAD HOPE!

My daughter and I were just discussing this today. We agreed that BFL is really a springboard to fitness and health. She wants to join the wrestling team next year (yes, w/boys) and knows she needs to be "bodybuilder" fit to do it.
I can't stop exercising now, or I'll get obese. Genetics are against me, as well as the fact that my metabolism came to a screeching halt 6 years ago when I quit smoking. All I've done since is gain. I have to change my lifestyle for good or it's going to be too late to do it at all.
For us, this really is Body for LIFE!
There are a bunch of ladies at work, and one man, who are watching me as I do BFL, to "see if it works" before they take it on. I feel like a kind of guinea pig, but I'm ok with that. If I can motivate even one other person to live a healthier lifestyle, I'll be very glad for that.

I am on challenge two. I had about a year in between my challenges were I continued to eat healthy and work out and lost weight. I am starting challenge two trying to lose those last few pounds I am stuck on. In a lot of ways challenge two is much more frusterating because I am not seeing the dramatic transformation of challenge 2. I think this community really helps by letting everyone vent and other people saying "Hey, hang in there, I've been there and it gets better". I know after the last year or so I will never go back to eating how I was before, I have always exercised so that was not an issue at all for me...It was eating a bag of cookies in two days and fast food 5 times or more a week. I also want to teach my kids the eating for life method, there are so many obese kids today it really scares me. When my 18 month old would drive by McDonalds and ask for it by name I knew it was time to change my familys eating habits. Sorry this is so long!!

Since I am on vacation this week, I am going to the gym at a different time than normal. This means there is a different crowd at the gym than normal.
Yesterday, when I was doing my UBWO this old guy comes up to me and says I am doing everything wrong (not form wise) but that I should be doing everything a lot more slowly. He goes onto describe how he's done a lto of research and describes how he has found that this method he is doing is the most effective. (He described the slow burn method of weight training).
I just smile and nod while trying to continue working out, because I do not workout fast by any means but too fast for him :)
While I agree that the slow burn method of weight trainign is great, it's definately not the only way of doing things, and I like to mix it in every few weeks when I give my muscles a shake up.
So anyway, picture me in the same gym clothes I wore when I was 25 lbs heavier - big baggy red pants, a oversized navy shirt, and my hair sticking out everywhere. (it doesn't sit normally until I wash and shampoo it which I do after I workout). I definately don't look thin in this getup and basically like something the cat dragged in.
Anyway, this guy comes and talks to me about 3 times going on and on, and I am trying to be polite but getting frustrated. I excuse myself to go to the washroom before coming back to move onto another exercise.
By now, I am getting pretty hot, so I take off the huge oversized baggy navy shirt so I just have my crop top on and move onto triceps and biceps. While doing biceps, my arms muscles tend to popout everywhere now, and I have to say I look pretty buff ;)
This old guy comes back again, and starts apologising to me and hope he didn't offend me etc. Obviously he changed his mind about how much I know about working out after seeing I atually have a fair bit of muscle myself. LOL
Anyway, back at the gym today, he had another lady cornered and I could tell by his hand gestures he was talking about the same thing. This time he was more prepared. He was carrying around a enveolope with print outs of the slow burn method and giving them out to people as he was talking to them.
Thank god today was cardio for me so there was no excuse for him to talk to me again ! LOL
I know even myself I get excited sometimes and want to help people, but I certainly hope I never come off as annoying as what he does!
I decided then and there to get myself some new workout clothes so I don't look like such a bum at the gym every morning LMAO. (Which I did!)
Sorry this is so long, thought I would share :)

:-) Tai ...I honestly think that some guys do that just so that they can flirt with you!!! :-)
I had a very positive experience yesterday at the gym, I had a guy that corrected my posture during my bicep barbell curl...suggested that I keep my elbows nice and snug against me (and I thought I already did that but you don't always see yourself all that well..mirrors only do so much *LOL*)... he also told me to REALLY squeeze my biceps and they have never burned sooooo much in my entire life! I was thankful for his help and he said "not a problem, I enjoy doing that!". He was nice and he seemed like he had a very good understanding of how exercise should be done, the importance of proper form and the right amount of weight to go with it.
Tai... I'm sure there was some hints of flirtation intentions in there...cause you are smoking!! :-)

OMG that is hilarious! This literally had me ROFLMAO! OMG no he didn't! YEs, I know that feeling of looking like something the cat drug in. New gym clothes were a must when they started falling off while running on the treadmill! Annoying man trying to tell you how to work out is equally a sign to get some new workout clothes that show it off baby! Yes, I think the guy was wanting a little more than a new work out partner LOL! teeeheeee. That was a good story thanks for sharing! : )

“The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of nonessentials.” (Lin Yutang)
Think of the sculptor chipping away at a block of marble…his job is to eliminate what is unneeded. The figure inside the block is a vision in the sculptor’s mind just waiting to be released. Aren’t we much the same? Do you have a vision in your mind of what you are sculpting? Hold that vision close! Each day of work slowly chips away the nonessential material. I can’t wait to see myself in the mirror the way I see myself in my mind!

I always thought the original left me hanging. but this one really goes in to detail about the female body and what a surprise. I am so glad to have it and I have only read a few pages.Highly recommended and I have been a BFL follower/looker for years. And our Famous Tracy711 is pictured on the cover wrapper as well. WTG Tracy. The daily progress reports are different too. I hope the BFL website makes those downloadable.

Ok, The top 20 profiles were voted for are march 1 for the best in Feb???
20 people were listed, I thought they stayed there in that position for the entire month until we voted again.
but in the lst 2 days I have watched the #20 spot change from 3 different names.
I asked one person about it and they said, it changes as people complete there 12 weeks and people vote
So that means we are voting all month long????
someone please explain this to me, I thought we vote one a month for 5 people and then again the following month, but that is not what is happening
Body for Life Forum Message by LilRed (247 posts) at 01:05 PM
You get 5 votes per month. You may use them at any time during that month, but you get them on the 1st.
The profiles do move all month based on the votes they get throughout the month. The monthly list should clear at the end of this month and new votes will place profiles on that list.
Does that help?
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1343 posts) at 01:07 PM
Everyone has 5 votes. Anyone can vote anytime until they use upu those 5 votes.
You can only vote for the same person once.
The positions will keep changing all month, as people keep casting votes until they run out.
Beginning of the month, you get 5 more votes again, and can cast your ballot again.
Body for Life Forum Message by fostermamasmith (390 posts) at 01:09 PM
yes, thanks, so that means that if you make the #1 spot on April 1, you might be in the #7 spot by April 10th and could even get to #20 and then someone else replace you during that month??
Body for Life Forum Message by Lovey75 (89 posts) at 01:36 PM
One day I voted for about 20 people. It kept letting me vote. What's with that? Ever since I don't bother with voting for anyone. If I ever made the top 20, I'd be flattered, but I think the system may be flawed.

Hi everyone!
I have a problem. I'm currently taking EAS Thermodynamix(sp?) for energy in the morning, and a multivitamin some time after my second meal. The problem is that I am TERRIBLE at swallowing pills, and both of these are pretty monstrous to me. It's completely a mental thing, but I have to wake up like 20 minutes early in the morning just to give me some time to mentally prepare myself to get the Therm down, and its the same thing later in the day with my vitamin. I've started taking them both with a little bit of diet soda, juice or anything with some flavor, and it seems to help open my throat up a bit.
I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem, and what your tricks are for getting (and keeping) pills down.
Thanks!
Body for Life Forum Message by RJA733 (46 posts) at 01:18 PM
swallow with your head tilted back. Another way i used to do it is to place the pill in my mouth take some water and suck it through the back of my throat like a straw. You can also practice opening your throat by taking a glass of water titlting your head back letting the water drip back and swallowing big gulps of it with wouth moving your tounge or lips. Hope one of those helps

I did my run a little while ago, and my get up and go, got up and went!! I couldn't run, not out of breath or anything, just my legs would not go, I was running with these little baby steps going no where, I just wouldn't get the stride going. on the way back I stoped to get the mail and when I opened the mail box, a dead duck was in it!! I screamed and ran, my stride kicked in. the mail box is 1/4 mile from the house. we have a long drive way out in the country.
I thought it was one of my ducks, but it wasn't.
I went back with my husband, and someone had shot a duck and put it there, Kids in the area think there are funny I guess.
that is awful. now I'm all upset!

Fortunately, I have never returned from a workout of any caliber to find murdered fowl in my mailbox. (Although growing up, I lived in the country and had that same trek to get the mail. :-)
If you have any idea who might have done it, it's always a good threat to remind the offenders that it's a pretty darn big federal offense to tamper with mailboxes.
Shake it off, lady -- the workout and the rest. Give yourself a nice treat today, like a long soak in the tub or paint your toenails a fun color. Tomorrow's coming soon, and it'll be a better day.

Hi! This seems like a great community, so I thought I'd jump on in!
I'm a 34-year-old mom of two small children (ages 3 and 5). I started my first Body For Life challenge in mid-February because I was just feeling terrible--tired, run-down, cranky. Plus the pounds were starting to creep on and I didn't like that one bit! I decided I needed a big change, so I'm doing the challenge. I will finish right before my 35th birthday, and my goal is to be healthy, happy, and strong (Plus to feel good enough about the way I look to go out in public in a bikini!).
I'm almost done with my 6th week, and am already meeting some of my goals. I'm so much happier and feel so much better. Fewer migraines, lots more energy, more relaxed, etc. I've lost almost 7 pounds, and I can see some definition in my arms and legs. I've also lost inches in my waist and poochy belly. (I've never had a flat stomach but my 9-pound and 10-pound babies certainly didn't help the situation!)
I'm not taking any supplements and am working out at home. I run outside for the cardio, and lift weights in my family room while the kids watch PBS and play around me. I'm a big rule-follower, so I haven't missed a workout or "cheated" but the challenge has definitely BEEN a challenge at times. I can't always eat as soon as I should (with two kids, things don't always go as planned) so sometimes I'm pretty hungry, and I've had two colds since the challenge started, making it hard to get motivated to work out. But I've managed somehow! I'm determined to see it through.
I don't know how often I'll be able to post, but I'll try to check in regularly. Looking forward to getting to know you all! :o)

Hi gang! Haven't been on the board much lately. I've really been exhausted the last several days. I think it is simply my body taking a breather after pushing myself during Challenge 1...Since I'm still in recovery mode from the pituitary disorder, I WAKE UP tired! So it only makes sense that when my body senses it is OK to rest , I really feel it...
I have had some time to reflect on completing my first challenge and wanted to share my thoughts...
First and foremost - BFL works! You don't need to tweak it or fiddle with it to get great results! It is a workable program even if you don't have that much energy or time. And now I know how critical it is to take pictures and post them! And even though I'm a very self-sufficient person, I benefited a great deal from connecting with my friends here on the board.
I didn't realize what a great feeling of confidence completing a challenge would give me. After all of these years of coping with illness and having so many fitness comebacks shot down by illness, I KNOW that THIS time I will succeed!!! Just that thought brings tears to my eyes. I find myself telling the kid in me "It's OK buddy...you're going to be alright now..."
Along with the ecstatic feelings of a successful challenge I have felt a little sadness and some second-guessing... Thoughts like "Why didn't I do this before?", "What a waste the last 10 years have been...", blah blah blah...
I had to remind myself with a simple but profound truth "Because you've been sicker than a dog!!! MAYBE, you could have done better, but maybe your Mom was right when she said it has been a tremendous effort on your part just to hang on...physically, emotionally, spiritually and financially..." I'm sure anyone reading this who has had a chronic illness has also had to fight the guilt that seems to come from being sick.
I realize that BFL is about so much more than just building a nice body... It's about learning to take care of you and your life. It's about taking responsibility for the choices you make that affect your health - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I believe that most weight problems are at least to some degree due to emotional wounds. There may be other factors such as illness but the truth is that if a person doesn't address any underlying issues that led to their weight gain, they won't be successful.
A big step for me was to get past the garbage that says it is vain, ungodly, selfish, obsessive, etc. to want to build a great looking and healthy body. Funny, how I've never heard it was obsessive to work a job 8 hours a day, 5 days a week! The truth is, you must do your best to take care of your body if you are going to live up to your potential and use the gifts God has blessed you with...There is nothing Holy about letting your body go...
I was reminded of how much garbage there is in the world related to fitness and I am so glad that I have the right program...
Improving my body is a great reward but I'm starting to notice some other signs that the kid is coming back...
I've always been known for my wacky sense of humor and quick wit. That sense of humor is back. It never really went away - there just wasn't enough gas in my emotional gas tank before to be funny!
I'm getting back to doing projects around the house...I've started thinking about getting my model sailplanes out and flying them...I've scheduled a couple of camping trips...I committed to do the annual 4th of July 50-mile bike ride coming up...I'm thinking that before too long I'll return to singing in the choir...
After a few more months I expect that my illness will be under control and maybe I'll get back to dating. Dang! I'm so tired of being alone! I have to admit that for years I wondered if maybe I would just be alone for the rest of my life...I dont believe that whatsoever now!!! Yeaaaah, baby!!! (pardon the Austin Powers lingo!).
My most profound reflection from Challenge 1 though is that I believe that I'm finally seeing a change of seasons in my life. That after years of winter, spring is here! And summer is close behind...
I told people for years that I believed that my illness was part of God preparing me for something better...that I was in 'spiritual boot camp' - that He was 'training' me for something big...
Well, I'm excited to see what that 'something' is that I've been 'training' for all these years! Certainly dropping 67lbs is a great start! But it is still only a START! There is much more to do!
It's kind of like being far away from home for years...When you finally make the long journey back, you don't slow down or lose enthusiasm just because you've already traveled a long distance. Instead, the thought of seeing your loved ones after being away for so many years, only makes your resolve stronger and your pace quicker...Of course, you don't even think of quitting or turning around...You know where you belong and your heart can't wait to get there...
Well, I've got to get back on that road now...I still got quite few miles to cover...
And again my dear friends...Thank you
Jim

Excellent post, Jim. You are so right that this is more than building a nice body. This is about health and wellness. I love the feeling of wellness and I see you are loving it too. I belive that God said that work is good, for many reasons and one can apply to physical work. He created us to work and be busy and as life has allowed us to become more sedentary, we have to find ways to stay active and keep our bodies as He intended in the creation of us.
You are so AWESOME, Jim! Can't wait to see you at the end of C2!

I can definetly relate! Been heavy as long as I can remember, during high school my brother would get teased because of me, then I lost weight to come into the Navy, remembering it being a lot easier..UMMM? Then here I am almost 20 years later still battling the same demon..Well I am ready for that demon to get an old fasioned butt whipping.. So good for you, the best moment of your life is when you realize that you can make a change for the better. You keep going, you'll be dating with no time and with a heart like that, a woman would be lucky to have you. take care, Udenia

Well today was a doozy. I decided to do a 10 minute cardio warmup on the elliptical today before starting my upper body workout. Well that was REALLY BAD idea LOL. This may work for some but today I learned it isn't for me.
Ok so after I did 10 minutes on the elliptical and working up a sweat, I went to the weight room. I did leg extensions. Not too bad. Then tried Plie squats with a 30 LB dumbell for my last 12 and struggled. I was like WTF???
OK so on to hamstring curls. Didn't do too bad. Someone was using the smith machine so I grabbed 20 LB dumbells to do lunges for the last 12 and OMG.... STRUGGLED BADLY!!!! I'm thinking to myself WTF is wrong with me? Why am I so weak?
So on to the seated calf raise machine and this is where it happened. I normally do 120-130 lbs on there for my six reps. Well I had 100 LBS on there and after 6 reps I couldn't get the damn thing up high enough to engage the catch and got stuck. Now I am really doing all I can to get it up and engage the catch and the calves are on fire, I'm starting to get worried. Now what do I do?
A guy saw me struggling and came over and helped me lift it up and engage the catch. I was like OMG thank you. He just smiled and said no problem. Of course he just had to be a regular. Someone who is always there and will forever remember me as the nitwit who tried lifting too much LOL. Not a good day !!!! But that was definite 10... LOL

Hey girl, that is not embarrassing, heck your legs were probably tired or needed a really good stretch. I usually see body builders power walk for 15-20 minutes to get warmed up... Hey, think of it like this, it worked didn't it, got a guy to come over and assist? lol..

I really need to go to a gym, the only hot guy in my basement when I workout is a picture of Achilles (Brad Pitt from Troy), and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be much help in an emergency!!
Although, he comes in handy when I need something to focus on ;)
Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (15 posts) at 10:20 PM
I do the 'home gym' thing too. Luckly I have a 'hot guy' that comes to my rescue all the time.
Once I was doing a chest press and couldn't lift the weight high enough to get it over the 'hooks' I'm in the backyard on the bench straining to hold up this weight and having to yell into the living room... "HONEY! HELP!"
Now I get teased about it everytime I go out to do chest.

Lucky for me, I kept all of my "little" clothes in a wistful longing that one day I would be able to wear them again. Speak of the devil, I'm wearing one of my "little" shirts right this minute. Good thing I threw out so much of my other crap so I'd have room to keep a bunch of clothes that I couldn't wear at the time.

My left hamstring has been SO TIGHT for like 4-5 days now. Its horrible. I've tried baths, stretching, ben gay, natural remedies. IT REALLY HURTS. Sitting, standing, laying. I'm really dreading my cardio tonight. I don't know why the heck it got tight, and why only the left one. Any ideas??
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicci (34 posts) at 05:25 PM
My right hamstring gets randomly tight sometimes. Keep stretching, but remember to ease into your stretches. If it is tight and you force it too much, you'll injure it.
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (142 posts) at 05:26 PM
Maybe you pulled something????? Some kind of kink?????
Maybe Dr.J is online and will answer. My first reaction would be to try and stretch it but after 4-5 days with no relief, can you see a doctor.
Body for Life Forum Message by Monica (390 posts) at 05:29 PM
Well, I didn't mention that it is SLOWLY getting better. Its not the same intensity pain as it was in the beginning. I don't think anything is pulled either. It just feels really tight. Its weird. Maybe it got overworked when I was ripping out my floor and putting in a new one! HUH!
Body for Life Forum Message by Jeanie101 (54 posts) at 08:10 PM

Ok, I've been doing TERRIBLE lately. I have been eating to the letter but I have not been spending much time at the gym lately and I sure feel guilty. I figure if I get it all out I will get back to my old diligent self. I was really sick at the begining of last week (you all read my miserable posts! lol) I still managed to work out on Monday and Tuesday, thats it. No workout since Tuesday. Thats a whole week with no workout. I keep intending to workout, oversleeping, having to rush around to get ready and then by the time I get home I zonk out. PHEW, thats off my chest. I feel SO guilty but now its time to just let it all go and get back to the gym tonight. Have a great BFL day everyone.

I know you're under a lot of stress lately, you're only human. We all slip up now and again, so just dust of, dig in, and get back on track.
By the Way, You did great by eating clean...Pat yourself on the back for that, you deserve it!
Jeanie :D

Be proud that you are eating clean - not an easy task when not woring out.
So, you missed some workouts - don't dwell on it - can't change the past.
Just get back to it NOW!! :)
You can do it - you are doing so great so far - I know you will be right back on track.
Make yourself a promise and those are hard to break...

I know there have been many posts on this subject, but I have to let some feelings out.
I'm in the middle of week 3 (challenge 1).
The first week I lost around 2.5 pounds.
The second week I gained back 1 pound
and now I've dropped 1 pound again, leaving me with a total of 2.5 pounds lost in 17 days.
I know I'm not supposed to look at the scale, but I just can't resist it.
I've been lurking around here, reading people's profiles and so many of you guys are losing more than 2.5 per week!
I'm waiting 'till week 4 to post my pictures here. Maybe then I'll see the difference.
In the meantime I'm being comforted by the improvements I'm feeling in my workouts... My legs in particular are getting stronger by the day, and I believe my shoulders have grown.
Only... I don't want to become one of those Gorillas who have strong muscles that are covered by FAT.
I'm planning to stick with this program no matter what. I believe I'm doing it correctly. I'm trying to cut portion sizes down... but I don't want to over do it.
Those of you who have been more successful at losing fat... do you have any suggestions?
Body for Life Forum Message by AnnaRABQNM (5 posts) at 06:36 PM
You are only in week 3. You will probably start seeing more weight lose in week 8. You might want to measure yourself and go by inches lost instead. Or even how your clothes are fitting. My opinion is the scale is evil. So try not to depend on it so much.
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (854 posts) at 06:40 PM
LMAO, I promise you wont become a big muscled gorilla covered in fat. It just doesn't work that way. Diet and cardio take care of the fat. Weight training builds lean mass (muscles) which help you burn fat even faster and more effectively. Pretty cool eh?
Now as far as the scale goes. There are numerous factors that affect the scale. Water, time of day, time of month for women, muscle weighs more than fat, constipation (yes I know kinda gross but so true). You will see daily fluctuations in the scale. It is NOT a true indicator of your success. Never has been never will be period.
Look at your measurements. Look at how clothing fits. Look at your body. Have you noticed that something looks a bit differently? Something may look a little smoother. Maybe not smaller yet but the appearance of it looks different?
I read a blog somewhere that talks about how the fat inside of your muscle is what you lose first. This is why things may look differently. Ya know like the fat you see on a piece of meat. All those fine lines of fat inside of it? We have that too. Its still very early yet for you.
I noticed you said your in your 3rd week but you havent posted any measurements at all!!! This is what is very important. Track this weekly. Every cheat day. First thing in the AM, measure yourself. A really good site you can use is called mybodycomp.com. This shows you where to measure yourself on your body and it tracks your progress as well as body fat percentage which I have to warn you is not the most accurate for gauging body fat but you will see it slowly come down as your measurements go down.
Lastly, as far as portion control goes, its palm and fist sized portions. Your palm and fist. This is specific to each person. Don't cut your portions down to anything less than that. Your going to do fine. Start tracking your measurements and take pictures of yourself every 4 weeks. NO you don't have to post them here, but you DO NEED to be able to visually see these changes and the camera won't lie. Best of luck to you. Stay strong :)

I couldn't have said it any better than Goddessa.... so I'll just say, that's what scales do! I'm pretty sure they were invented by some maniacal evil scientist who wanted to inflict mental anguish on all of us. :D
Body for Life Forum Message by froglette (475 posts) at 07:47 PM
Bflblog, if you're not gaining weight but are getting stronger, then you are losing fat and gaining muscle. It takes a while for it to become readily visible, but it's happening. Taking those measurementes regularly will help you see what the scale and your eyes can't tell you.

O.K., I have to chime in here. The last minute of my HIIT today (last minute before cool down, I mean) lasted for a small eternity. I think the grass might have actually grown somewhat while that minute was going. It was in super slow-mo and I felt like I would surely have an aneurysm and/or pass out, throw up, or start sobbing hysterically before that minute ended. But, alas, I hung on and finished the minute without hanging on to the treadmill handles for dear life or doing any of the above. I did manage to get 1.73 miles in my 20 minutes, which is a personal best for me. Too bad I almost had to die for it.

Yes, I take CLA and have since 2002. I use EAS and I have not a clue what brand is the cheapest.

Shannette,
I live in Canada, so I don't know what's available where you are, but I've been using CLA the last few weeks and I would recommend it.
I use "Exact", I think it's just a generic drug store brand. The pharmacist picked it out for me, she said they were very good quality. They are 600 mg capsules, and you take 2 caps, 3 times a day. I think they were $18.00 for 90, but like everything else, the US price would be WAYY cheaper. You guys are so lucky!!!!

When contemplating my diets of the past they serve as comic strips of motivation.
I remember a few years ago I tried a low-carb diet that would allow you one free meal a day. The only catch was that you had ONE HOUR for this free meal in which you could eat what ever you wanted. I’m not exactly sure why this brought out the 300 lb linebacker binge in me….could it be the forbiddance of carbs all day that would send my sugar cravings out of control? Maybe it was placing a time limit on my gorging that brought out the competitor in me?
It all came to a peak while I was living in the dorms during the height of the “Friends” phenomenon. I had determined my schedule, to allow for my one hour of stuffing in the cafeteria, ensuring sufficient time to get back in time for Thursday night TV. As chance would have it, my girlfriends were running late (this was also a social event for some of them, so primping was required) and when we arrived the lines were twice as long due to parents weekend. Determined not to allow these variables to deter my cravings I began the loading of my tray….everything that you could possibly imagine was piled on with the inclusion of my brownie fudge sunday and two ice cream sandwiches that I always saved for desert. The chow began…as my hour was nearing an end I realized I hadn’t finished everything on my tray yet and my television show was nearing. For the sake of my TV “Friends” I forsake some of my treasures to the trash and parted way with my two ice cream sandwiches in a sprint back to my room. Due to my frenzy, and bloated belly, I stumbled and fell on my return. When a clumsy 5’11” girl falls it is like watching a tree come down. I attempted to catch myself and ended up squeezing my hands and squished, my now melted ice cream bars, down the front of me. Frustration overtook me as ice cream ran down my arms…I did not have enough time to run and get two more since I only had 5 minutes left of my hour to eat and only a few minutes left to get back to the TV…grief overcame and I burst into tears.
At that moment…I realized that I was crying over squished ice cream.
A lot of failed diets and heartaches from the past have brought me here. All I can say is thank goodness, for all involved!!!
Anyone else as foolish????

Ha - I did that diet Carb lover's diet:) fortunatly, I was pretty stable about my allotted 'one hour'
Let's see - what others?
My first ever diet was one I found in one of those bookletts that you find at the check out counter - 900 calories/day.
Then there was 'slim fast' and the diet's tea diet...
Weight Watchers
Atkins
Ediets
Weigh Down
Burn Rate Diet
You name it - I've probably tried it. Even BFL. Every one of them - I get to 170-175; fall off the wagon and gain it ALL back.
This time - I've found something that will make the difference. The "Thin Commandments" I've got 20lbs 'til I hit that danger zone - then we'll see!

So, I entered all my info for my second Challenge on my profile. Just a little note-on the first challenge, I was measuring the wrong place for my waist (across the belly button). When I discovered where I was really supposed to be measuring my waist, I didn't change it in the middle of the challenge because I didn't want to throw off my numbers with my actual waist measurement. So, I started off this challenge with my real waist measurement. Just wanted to put up a disclaimer in case someone noticed the discrepancy.

I've come so far 23.5 lbs weight loss and a size 8. I still need to work on those big old legs of mine but they are coming along more than I can see in these pics. I really do have some definition.
Sorry these are so bad..I am going to take some nicer ones tomorrow with my friends really good camera to send in with my packet. I'll write my essay this weekend. I kinda have it in my head already. Thanks for all your support!

I work out at home - My first challenge (year before last) I lost 36 pounds of fat and gained 12 lbs of muscle in 18 weeks just by using the stuff I had at home. It's great because I can lift weights at 2:00am and no one knows or cares. It certainly takes away that 'I just can't get to the gym' excuse!

Thanks for all the great comments. They really are motivating. It's so true that to make a change the motivation MUST come from within. I am very lucky in that my husband is VERY supportive, he is doing the program too! It's my girlfriends that are the main problem. Sometimes I really have to do a reality check with myself to make sure that they aren't right when they say I'm overdoing it or obsessing. I know the intentions are honorable, they want me to love myself and they think I'm fine the way I am. And I agree, I do love myself and I think I am fine the way I am, but I don't want to be just fine. I want to be great and like Teresa said more than ever it's so important for me to set a healthy example for my baby girl. I want her to see me happy, eating healthy and fit not miserable and obsessing about my body.
Again, thanks for all the support!

People at work look at me like I'm obsessed as well. I have always been thin but after many years my belly caught up to me. I hide it VERY well. Anyway, I have learned to tell people that I am trying to build muscle and I even tell some people that I am training for a marathon run. That usually shuts them up. :)

How does diet caffeine-free soda fit in? They usually only have about 30-50mg of sodium. I have been drinking one a day in addition to my water, but wasn't sure how it actually fit into BFL.
Does the Eating for Life book say anything about diet sodas? (I haven't purchased it yet!)

Saturated fat in the diet is the biggest dietary contributor to increased cholesterol. Lower fat diets and lower calorie diets have lower saturated fat levels and that helps decrease your cholesterol. The exercise will help too. BFL is great for this!

Hi everyone-
I am just starting my BFL challenge. I've been through this sort of process before (but not officially in a BFL challenge). I can always find the time to work out, and I can force myself to eat relatively clean for 12 weeks, but i've always had a severe problem with hunger pains, especially late in the day.
Does anyone have any recommendations for appetite suppressants (whether over the counter or prescription), that *really* work?
Thanks,

In addition to jstone's advice, I would also like to add water, and (at least according to the EFL book)vegetables.
As long as you keep the dressings, sauces, etc. for the veggies to a minimum you can pretty much have unlimited portions. Hope this helps.

The best thing I have found is to eat clean balanced meals, and take in a gallon of water a day. Drinking cold water before and during meals helps you feel full and load up on the fiberous veggies like brocolli. Most of the pills are stimulant based and can be addictive let alone just a huge waste of money..
Body for Life Forum Message by teresafromtx (808 posts) at 10:48 AM
my best appetite suppressant is the 6 meals a day. Sorry, I know it is basic. But it works. Sorry not much help. I don't believe in those pills at all. I think they are bad news. My opinion of course. : )
Body for Life Forum Message by llangkamp (50 posts) at 10:55 AM
Another good remedy is cleaning the toilet. I mean REALLY cleaning it. Be sure that you get every exposed surface, including the back of the tank if you can get to it. Make sure you scrub the floor around it, because sometimes people miss and don't tell you (visitors, 3 year olds, whomever). If you haven't really thoroughly cleaned it in awhile, that should curb your appetite. Even if you have, just thinking about where your hands have been may just be enough. YUCK!
Of course, if you enjoy cleaning the toilet, substitute it with your least favorite chore. Others that are great include cleaning out/sterilizing the garbage cans, scrubbing the grout between your tiles, and changing poopy diapers (that kills my appetite every time).
So, my advice is the same as others, I guess. Stay busy, drink water, go for a walk, exercise or try to improve your flexibility, check out the chatroom here, and if nothing helps, eat some veggies.
Honestly, if you are portioning correctly, you shouldn't have too many days where you are starving. If you do get the occasional day like that, celebrate. It probably means that your body is going into super metabolism fat-burning mode.

Not nessecarily.
But why place SO much emphasis on weight :) If your pics are encouraging, as well as your measurements - isn't that what counts?
If you are liking the way you look and feel now, doesn't that outweight something as trivial as scale weight?
Body for Life Forum Message by jaimekristen (7 posts) at 12:18 PM
That's one of my goals, to only weigh myself once a week and not to obsess over it! I used to weight myself daily, and if the scale wasn't lower it was harder to stick to eating well!

Shelly, hang in there. I was very discouraged with my progress until about week 8 and I began to see some improvement. Stick with it, eat clean and you will see changes. Remember, the scale is NOT your friend and it will trick you into thinking you aren't making any progress.
Hang on, girl!

I was doing the same thing...the numbers weren't going down fast enough and it was frustrating me to the point that none of the other measurements mattered. I finally committed to avoiding the scale except on days I am posting my stats. You would be amazed at how much more positive everything else becomes when you are no longer a slave to the (very deceptive) scale. Chin up, stay positive.

I have tried to start the BFL Challenge many times before, but did not even get past the first week. Looking at myself in the mirror and not being able to fit into anything flattering is just doing my head in. I unfortunately hold my fat in my abdomen area, which is not very flattering at the best of times, so I have started the Challenge today and hope to, no, I will finish it this time.
I intended to start the Challenge yesterday, but due to a dodgy stomach started today. I went to the gym this evening and did my Upper Body Workout. I actually felt great. I also drank gallons (so it seems) of water today.
I have looked through the profiles of many of the new and old BFL Challengers and reading what you all have to say has given me the push to continue, so HERE GOES!!!!

My official start date is this Sunday April 3, 2005. By then I'll be organized food wise and workout wise. Until then I'm doing the best I can.
My main problem is sugar addiciton...cookies, coffe/mochas. I think I'll shape up rather quickly if I can get control of my eating and stop my emotional eating.
I'm at my wits end. I've been hating my body for the last 2+ years. Crying about it. Complaining. Can't look in the mirror. Can't remember the last time I wore shorts. So I'm ready to change. I'm ready to FIGHT for a toned butt and toned thighs. I don't WANT cottage cheese on my arse anymore! And, of course, I have no one to blame but me for all of it. I chose not to excercise. I chose to eat the cookies. So really, I have no right to have a pity-party.
: )
I hope you can help keep me motivated. I'm one of those that wants instant results and has little patience waiting for them

Oh, honey. You've come to the right place. We all know where you're coming from.

Yeah, I think we've all been there at some point in our lives. The sugar cravings will stop once you've purged it all out of your system. In the mean time, keep lots of fresh fruit around and if you don't have the Eating For Life book, get it! There are some fabulous desserts in there that feel like cheating but they're not. They were the one thing that kept me going when I first started here.
You can have the pity party, if you want.... just make sure you're serving water, lean protein, and whole grain carbs. :D

Hi y'all. First off, muchos thanks to my S-I-L Stacygrrrl for turning me toward this web site and the BFL info :)
I decided to try BFL mostly because of the good reviews I've heard about. Plus, my best friend and I are trying to both lose weight and get back into the shape we were in in HS -- which is not round! *LOL* Most days I don't feel "overweight," but I'm a 7th grade teacher, so I KNOW there is a severe lack of energy and muscle tone where I know I need it. Plus, I was diagnosed 2 years ago as hypothyroid - which puts on weight so subtly you don't realize it 'til your "fat pants" don't fit.
So, as luck would have it, hubby and I just acquired a virutally-free Bowflex that I'm going to start using. I set this coming Monday, April 4, as my starting point. by then, I know my fridge will be stocked back up with healthy foods and I can better plan my workout times. I may even get the hubby into BFL since he's wanting to get back into better shape too!
Enough babbling...I'll get my "Before" picts posted as soon as I can. :)

Hi Nikki,
Great to see you've joined the team! This truly is the best thing that I have ever done for my health. Before BFL I knew what it took to be healthy, but BFL really puts it all together and makes you successful in what you want to achieve in life. I really hope you enjoy this program as much as I do!

Same here - I've never, ever done anything like this before - I don't even e-mail friends or family, nor do I receive any.
To me also, looks like the buddy list is right here on this board, couldn't find better encouraging buddies anywhere than here!
