Thread: What is cutting and when should I do it? (94 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by stepmorjo (20 posts) at 09:42 AM: What is cutting and when should I do it?
I just posted my 5 week pictures and I can't say I am seeing much change. My weight has stalled as well. I have read some things about cutting recently. I am assuming that helps to get more defined muscles. I am looking to do that now, how is it done? Or do I have to wait until I reach a certain BF? I seemed to have hit a plateu, but am lifting as heavy as I can. Thanks in advance for any help, Stephanie

Body for Life Forum Message by Pixy (68 posts) at 10:04 AM:
You look good you and you have 6 more weeks I would not worry. Week 6 is to early for cutting you should focus on fat burn your hiit add 25 moderate after 20 min. as long as it does not affect your 10s with your upper and lower workout. You can go to www.bodybuilding.com they have lots of question answers even some based on BFL. Good luck Mari

Body for Life Forum Message by curvature (6 posts) at 10:06 AM:
Cutting is basically trying to lower your bodyfat without losing any muscle. Bodybuilders or people who lift weights a lot will talk about "cutting" and "bulking". I've heard them say you can't lose fat and build muscle (bulk) at the same time, but I think the BFL program is pretty much proof that you can. To cut, you need a calorie deficit, work out, and lose body fat. To bulk (like a weight lifter does, I guess), you eat more calories than you need to build muscle, but you also gain fat. From most of the things I've read, a lot of people start with something like BFL. From there, they may decide to do a cut cycle, then a bulk cycle to build up muscle, then cut again to whatever BF% they want to define their muscles. I think I'm rambling now. Anyway, that's just info I've picked up, I'm sure I'm missing stuff there. Also, I think your pics look great. I can see some definite changes there. Congrats :)

I know it is entirely possible to attain that goal since some of you ladies have already done it and you all look fabulous by the way!! Anyway, any help, comments, etc would be much appreciated. My workouts are by the book although I do 25 minutes of steady state cardio after my 20min. HIIT 3x a week. Here's what I typically eat: M1: 1 egg, 2 egg whites, 1/3c. oatmeal w/apple cooked in. You might want to get some feedback on the type of body fat analysis you are using. I spoke with a trainer at my gym when I used the handheld device that sends a current through your body to measure body fat (similar to the scales that measure it). she told me that there is a considerable margin of error when using these. Not sure what you used but try some different methods if possible and see how the results come out.

Someone poste dan article all about creatine that was very informative. The one thing i didn;t get a clear answer on is whether one can take creatine while trying to lose weight and fat. Basically i want to know if anyone has used this while dropping weight and fat and whether or not it hindered or helped the process

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1721 posts) at 02:06 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1721 posts) at 03:18 PM: BFL for Women....got a bad rap???
OK I have read a bit from BFL for Women and I just wanted to give my review so far...... I like it. Now it's not Bill Phillips and I like her explanations for things and explaining WHY we need to be healthy. So far I am liking it. Now of course the Original BFL is great and I would always recommend reading Bill Phillips BFL before starting and then reading BFL for women after. Because Bill's book really puts it out there. BFL W seems to be very informative medically and reasonably. So, I just wanted to add my 2 cents on this subject. Cause, I saw all the people commenting on it. I mean it is a hard to follow in the HUGE steps Bill Phillip's has made but it is pretty good. I think it is a good read so far. But of course the original nothing beats Mr. Phillips! Ok done.... let me read some more and then make some more conclusions ... LOL. Teresa

Body for Life Forum Message by biffler (36 posts) at 03:35 PM:
I too liked the deeper look into the medical aspects of things and liked that she put soy/vege products on the menu. My biggest disappointment was no free day :(. Peeke suggests "mini chills" instead but for me, I'd wouldn't be able to live without a free day! Overall, not a disappointment but in following the original, not too exciting either.

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1721 posts) at 04:08 PM:
Yeah the original had me glued from beginning to end this one I get easily distracted and find myself wanting to skim. Like leisurely reading. Original BFL still lights my fire actually it sets a blaze inside me every-time I read it! This one does not have that kick in the A$$ factor and it does not keep you glued, inspired, and ready to go as the Original did. And THAT is an IMPORTANT factor to this program. T

Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (48 posts) at 06:39 PM: Eating Schedule
Here is the schedule that I try for: Breakfast 10am (wake up at 7, work out at 8, wait one hour and then eat) Snack 12 Noon Lunch 2pm Snack 4pm Dinner 6pm Snack 8pm Sometimes I don't eat dinner until 7pm and then my snack is at 9 and I go to bed at 10:30. Should I have my snack at 8pm anyway? Should I wait until 9pm or is that too late. I know some people say not to eat too late. I love having a shake after dinner, I look forward to it every night and would hate to give it up. I am losing weight and I have been snacking late like 8:30-9. Do you think this will be a problem in the future? Your thoughts are appreciated.

Body for Life Forum Message by Casper66 (7 posts) at 02:35 PM:
I've done alot of research on dairy because I have a problem digesting it. I only allow myself small amounts of dairy. But in my research I found tons of interesting info. The one that sticks in my mind the most is the milk ads. Remember the milk ads that said "Milk does a body good"? You don't see those any more right? It's because it dosen't. Milk is no longer allowed to say it builds stong bones and does a body good, because it dosen't. (false advertising) I think it's best not to rely on milk for your main source of calcuim.

Body for Life Forum Message by NaturalPhysiques (100 posts) at 04:06 PM:
Using milk for calcium is like trying to fill a bucket with a hole in the bottom. Milk requires a strong pH in the stomach to break down and digest, which then requires calcium. In other words, dairy while advertising how they provide calcium actually leeches calcium, i.e. increases the demand. In fact, you can go to PubMed (online research site) and find examples where they compared vegans with dairy eaters and found the vegans, even though they only received half the calcium in their diet, actually had the same calcium status (i.e. bone integrity, etc) as the dairy groups. Leafy green vegetables, nuts, legumes, etc are all great sources. What you learned about calcium as a supplement is also why so many uneducated people fall for the cheap one-a-day vitamins (Centrum, etc). They are just looking at the RDA (which isn't even the optimal amount, that's just the minimum amount for survival) and not the quality. For example, calcium requires cofactors like magnesium and Vitamin D to function optimally. Selenium is more bioavailable in the (more expensive) organic form. Most minerals are more readily ingested in chelated (combined with an amino acid) form. This is why I always encourage people to invest a little more in a pharmaceutical grade multivitamin. Pharmaceutical grade means the cost will be higher because they invest in strict testing standards to ensure the quality. Because of this, they also make sure the ingredients are premium and are the ones the body uses the best. In fact, they also look at interactions between vitamins (i.e. Vitamin C increases absorption of iron while other vitamins decrease, etc) and balance them accordingly. Yes, when you have a multibillion dollar industry, much of your "health advice" may actually be advertising and marketing. Jeremy

Body for Life Forum Message by CHRISTREIGNS77 (32 posts) at 04:56 PM:
AWESOME! You don't know how many times I tell people dairy doesn't cut it for calcium and no one believes me, thinks I'm crazy..same thing about the vitamins, man! people think they can buy some cheap crap and think they are actually getting something from it, it's dead man, no bioavailability, nothin'1 zip! nada! spend some money on something that works! shaklee, nutrilite, and learn to like fruits and vegetables, (preferably organic so at least you're not ingesting quite so many pesticides, waxes, and other gunk) THAT is where the vitamins are at, in my opinion.

OK guys, I have made them....They looked really good and smelled really good to when they were baking, and the first one or two wasn't too bad. They reccomend you freeze them and then just pull them out and nuk 'em, but that didn't go so well. They got kind of slimy and heavy. I really could not eat more than 2 and I'm not that picky. I also had to go buy all this wheat germ, oat four, wheat flour, and other extra stuff that I don't know what do do with now. I have thought about trying it again and putting WAY more spice into them and seeing if thats any beter. If anyone tried it let us know how they turn out.

I agree with Jamber...they were a bit heavy, and did not freeze well at all. Might try the brownies next.

I have made them twice, too. They smell awesome when you are baking them...but I was also disappointed in the texture and taste. It was like it just had to have some type of spread on it...but, of course I didn't put any on. I could take 2 or 3 of them, but that was enough, I was done. No one else in my family would eat them. I wonder if we put some dried cranberries or raisins in them if it would help the taste and moisture - but then it would probably be too carb heavy. They smelled soooo good, too. darn.

i agree with northern belle on most of her post. cous cous is actually a pasta and i do eat it on occasion, b/c it is so convenient. they make a whole wheat variety, which would be a better option. save the coconut curry for free day. most curries have quite a bit of oil and coconut milk is high in fat, even the lowfat stuff can be kind of high in fat.you can make healthy versions of alot of pan asian foods. unfortunately, in a lot of restuarants they add lots of oil.

Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (988 posts) at 06:04 AM:
There is at least one recipe in the EFL book for cous cous. Low fat ricotta is in several things, too. I was able to find fat free ricotta and one grocery store around here, and eat a lot of it. It's almost pure whey protein (as opposed to cottage cheese which is cassein). Ginger and garlic are your friends! They add flavor without excessive sodium or calories. Go for the low sodium broths. You're best saving stirfry from a restaurant for free day, because you don't know much fat they've cooked it in. Of course if you make your own only spraying the pan with just enough cooking spray, you're just fine.

Right. A lot of fat free stuff has lots of sugar or gluey substance to take it's place. Fat free dressing is nasty. However I do like fat free cottage cheese (which I only use in recipes so don't miss the fat) fat free ricotta, skim milk, and fat free yogurt, none of which have additives to take the place of the missing fat. I also like the Edy's fat free/sugar free ice cream. Yeah, there's goo in it, but it still tastes good.

Sugar alcohols are simply "fillers" used in a lot of "low-carb" food products because they have a moderate effect on blood sugar. But they don't contribute much in the way of nutrition. In fact, some research shows they may cause stomach upset if eaten in excess.

I am making Fajitas for guests this Saturday. Normally I only make Chicken, but I thought I'd throw in some beef too. I have made them before with skirt steak, with not too much success, I always overcook and they come out like jerky. Anyhow, Skirt Steak is just too fatty for me right now and I need to go with a much leaner cut of meat but want it to come out really tender. Filet is too expensive and I wouldn't want to waste it on fajitas. Maybe Strip Steak or London Broil?? What would you suggest? Thanks!!

Body for Life Forum Message by strongby35 (394 posts) at 10:29 AM: A question for all you runners out there...
I just finished my first challenge and did my workouts just as described in BFL. Weight-training 3x a week, and HIIT 3x a week. I ran outside for my HIITs and loved it. For my next fitness goal, I want to train for and run in a 10k. But I also want to keep going with BFL. How do you think I should go about it? One idea I had was to follow the http://www.halhigdon.com/ intermediate 10k training program, but a 20 minute HIIT once a week as my speed training. I'd still do the BFL weight training. What do you think? Also, do you think it's still okay to lift to failure on my LBWO days? With all the running I'm going to be doing I don't want to overtire my legs. Thanks if advance for any input you can give me! :o) -Renee

Body for Life Forum Message by jennilahart (3 posts) at 12:28 PM:
Though I am new to BFL, running is my expertise. :) This answer should address both of your central questions. With regards to doing a 10K training workout and sprinting on the HIIT days I caution you to be very careful with yourself. The problem with sprinting on those days is that you will have a distance run on lifting days. This will be very difficult during the weeks when you have two LBWOs. However, be not discouraged. Challenges is what we are about right? SO: hit your tens and do your sprinting workouts on your HIIT days but lag your distance days--dare I say I say it?--to your free days as much as possible to avoid injury from lifting. If you are feeling any pain aside from being sore you should immediately try to pinpoint the area. Commonly shins are a problem--if so, run on the grass for distance and sprint heel to toe for a while. If your knees begin to hurt take it very slow because you do not want to pull your IT bands. They are a muscle supported by your thighs and glutes which take a big beating during LBWO. I am excited that you want to run a 10K. Running is very rewarding! Have fun with it and remember to be very aware of yourself while training with both schedules. Have a wonderful day strongby!

I don't know what I did to cause that. ugg. Anyway, I would suggest folling the 10K training program. I trained for the Chicago Marathon a few years ago and it was very intense. Those people know what they are doing. It will be fun and good for your body to mix it up a bit. The last thing you want to do is overtrain or injury yourself by trying to do both programs at the same time. Good luck and enjoy!

Today at my new gym I was shocked to actually see a 6-pack (abs..not soda! hehe) that I wouldnt wanna have as my own. This woman was very thin (no more than MAYBE 110lbs)...had a very definite 6 pack but they were HUGE. (Very thick, "puffed-out" and in MY opinion not very sexy or attractive. I KNOW I am NO WHERE near gettin my own 6 pack to show...but after seein hers-I wanna know what NOT to do so I dont get big thick abs like that. Does that happen from the WAY you train your abs? I was checkin out her form and was surprised to see that she completely arched her back on every set she did-no matter what the ab ex. was. And she only did abs the whole time I was there(almost an hour). Anyone got any info for me? Thanks! Hugs....

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1721 posts) at 12:32 PM:
If you do abs and hold air in and do not exhale it can make the abdomen protrude outward. Thats why it is important to always exhale on the way up. Of course I did not see the woman she could have just been extremely muscular. But that was one explanation I could come up with. T

Body for Life Forum Message by Dana D (10 posts) at 12:35 PM:
Thnx T-N-T..thats probably what she did. Even though her abs were big and cut..the rest of her body had no visible muscle defintion so I was kinda confused. Thanks again!

I also do squats, lunges, deadlifts, stepups. There are a few different versions of squats and lunges, so I switch them up every 4 weeks. I love working out at home. It saves a lot of time. The nearest gym to me is a 20 minute drive.

This works for me b'cause my kids are home sleeping at 5am, and don't feel comfy leaving them there alone. I do my cardio outside while the weather is nice. I have a set of weights that I got for about $200 at Sam's Club a few years ago and a treadmill (gift from a boyfriend who was afraid I was going to get fat :)). Bill says that the exercises in the BFL book are the best and all can be done at home with free weights. Keep your eyes on the newspaper(classified ads and garage sales) becuase people are always selling exercise equipment (90% of home exercise equipment goes unused). Don't let this set you back. If there is a will there's a way. Good luck.

I have a full set of weights, an incline bench, a step and a ball. For those who are saying about home LBWO's being touch, the step really helps in chanigng up lunges and squats. I mostly do my workouts at lunchtime in the gym b/c I have 5 kids at home and at the gym I can have peace. I cannot begin to think of the number of lunges I've done in hope of thinning my thighs and butt!  I was to the point of not getting the least big sore anymore until I started switching them up a bit.  Here's what I've been doing lately and it seems to be working. I pretty damn sore again, that's for sure! (I'll know the truth when I take photos this week.)

Stationary Lunges on a Step (front): Put your front leg on a step with your back leg stretched far behind you. Use dumbbells.  I use 20-25-30-35 and then back to 20s.

Stationary Lunges on a Step (back): Put your back leg on a step with your front leg stretched out in front of you. Use dumbbells.  I use 20-25-30-35 and then back to 20s.

Walking Lunges:  I strap on ankle weights and hold 15s while I do them.  I shoot for a total of 60 w/o stopping.

Ahh, how I dread them....But they hurt so good!

Thread: Is HIIT REALLY the SHIIT? (213 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (656 posts) at 07:52 AM:
I've got to agree with many folks who have already posted. I was a cardio junkie (meaning, the more cardio and the longer, the better) for years. I made initial progress, but stalled. And what I think I really did was burn muscle, which is taking me forever to regain. Not a good situation. I think adding on an extra moderate cardio session per week is fine...you can burn some extra calories (during the session, only though) and it is kind of cathartic for me, anyways to glide through a moderate session and work up a nice little sweat. However, I think the intensity is the whole idea behind Training for Life. As you push your AT higher...when you train above it...you are actually widening that window of fat burning zone. You are burning more calories for a period of time after your workout and as you raise your metabolism you burn more calories at rest. Do I love it??? Once I am done with it, I love it, but when I first start it I have to admit that I am dreading it, too. I know I am gonna be very uncomfortable when I am really pushing and that part is not really something I look forward to. BUT, when I am done and I make progress and set personal goals for myself in improving every time - it keeps me coming back for more! And I have to agree that the shorter cardio time is a big benefit for me, too! About sweating - when I finish my face is red as a beet, my clothes are soaked, sweat dripping down my chest and back, hair just soaked at the roots! Give it another try. Maybe just start with one hiit per week and really push your limits. You might find a whole new respect for it (and your body might, too!!) Nancy :-)

Thread: Costs (319 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by pancyprus (4 posts) at 10:56 AM:
It saddens me to hear about the "cost" issue. Since i live in Cyprus i have to order my eas supplements via the net, the cheapest and best delivery to date is bodybuilding.com, but by the time i pay for them to be fed exed to Cyprus and then our customs in cyprus tax me on them (since its a non eu import) the cost rises to three times the amount people in the usa pay, but that does not bother me because they are worth every penny. Thank u eas for the wonderful supplements, thank you guys for posting inspiring posts. God Bless pan

Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (488 posts) at 11:03 AM:
Thanks for the post Kevin. I also tallied up what I spent in C1. This included several supplement orders at dpsnutrition.com, bfl videos, callipers, bodyfat tests, EFL book, success journal, and BFL book. I spent $498 total. And I still have and use these items today. I also think it was money well spent. Danielle

Body for Life Forum Message by Lovey75 (286 posts) at 11:07 AM:
When I first started I thought this is going to cost me a lot. In my first challenge I spent $293.03 on supplements, shakes and bars (according to my spreadsheet). I did have a whole box of bars and a box of 48 shakes left over to use for challenge 2. So I could take of about $70 from that to give me about $220 for C1. I did do a little more spending than that, I splurged on a new $100 blender and a new $20 back pack. I deserved it!

Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (340 posts) at 11:53 AM:
Lets talk money here, shall we?: The average American gains somewhere in the nature of 10lbs per year. 15lbs = 1 clothing size (approximately). 1 clothing size every other year x 7 pairs of pants and 7 shirts (this is unrealistically low, but lets just go with the low end) x $40 for a pair of pants and $25 for a shirt = $455 every other year. Oh yeah, and underwear - chalk up another $100 for that. $555 every other year. Oh, and fast food - say maybe twice a week at $10 a pop. I think that's conservative, but then I've not really been a big fast food eater. But lets just say - $20 per week x 52 weeks = $1040.00 a year!!! DIABETES - The average diabetic also suffers from related disorders such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, etc. MONTHLY estimated cost of the 4-5 drugs which they typically have to take to control diabetes and other disorders - between $115-170 in 2000. I'd hate to see what it would cost now in 2005. HEART ATTACK - Average total cost per hospital admission for acute myocardial infarction was $5,898 in 1998–99. This is IF there was no surgery involved. There are a TON of other things I could add to this, but lets just total this up over a 20 year period: $555 every 2 years over 20 years = $5550. $1040.00 per year on fast food x 20 = $20,800.00!! If, after 15 years of "letting go", you got diabetes, tack on $9,000.00 (12 months x $150/month x 5 years). If you STILL didn't listen to your doctors and ended up having a heart attack at the end of the 20 years, tack another $6,000 So... the total you potentially saved yourself (AND THIS IS CONSERVATIVE): $41,350.00!!!!!!! I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a Lexus and be thin. (Or invest that $$ and retire a little earlier, enjoying my lean, strong, toned 55-year-old-looking-35 body!!)

Body for Life Forum Message by CHRISTREIGNS77 (32 posts) at 12:00 PM:
excellent rachelle! I thought about posting something similar when I read this thread yesterday, but you beat me to it! When people talk about how much money you have to spend on a program, they are 1) assuming it won't work and you have wasted your money cuz diets don't work and they assume it is a diet and 2) are too lazy to bother thinking about all the money they spend on @$*& that is gonna kill them!

Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (340 posts) at 12:37 PM:
Yeah - it amazes me... "I can't afford $2 for a BFL bar" (you can find them cheaper) or "those shakes cost so much $$!" Really, how much does it cost YOU to eat lunch out? I was spending $6-7 a day on it if I didn't bring mine. Buying the contents for my lunch was STILL more than $2 or $3... Of course, BFL is going to cost me a pretty penny in the new wardrobe I have to buy very soon. Thank god I work from home so much - I am getting away with exactly 3 work outfits right now... I'm too cheap to buy any more, as they won't fit in a month or so...

Money is just a way of saying that there is some other excuse (most of the time) If you drink protein shakes it is actually an inexpensive part compared to fast food. A jug of protein can make 30 meals or more. That is about $1 per meal.

Body for Life Forum Message by Casper66 (7 posts) at 01:16 PM:
OOps, forgot to write in the box. LOL! This is my first post here. I am a penny picher and an accountant. So I know it costs nothing to be on the BFL plan. BFL SAVES me money. It is a cheaper lifestyle even if you take out the medical savings. Eating whole foods is cheaper than fast food and processed foods. I mostly use the Myoplex Original shakes that you mix with water. I drink at least 1 per day as one of my meals. Sometimes 2 if I didn't have time to bring something else. I order online and they only cost about 1.00 each! (Fit RX) I used to eat fast food or hit the taco wagon a few times a week. With eliminating my morning Mocha and bagel then my fast food lunch I am saving at least 30-40 bucks per week! Even with my gym membership my monthy expenses are lower since I Started BFL.

I am going to post what I spend on supplements, just because I'm so lucky to live where I live. Once a month EAS headquarters has a sale, that you can get the cheapest supplements around 10 boxes of advant edge bars (120 bars) = $45.00 4 tubs of Phosphagen HP = $18 2 tubs of Cytovol = $17 2 bottles of CLA (420 tablets) = $16 5 bottles of Beta Cut(450 tablets)= $5 2 tubs of Synthevol = $17 4 boxes of Myoplex (80 servings) = $18 Grand Total = $136. I am sure I will have some left over as well....

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (791 posts) at 11:56 AM:
Lovey -- One thing that is a big motivation is the idea of sharing a toast with my friends at the end of C3 and saying "The last time I had a drink I was over 300lbs, and now I'm 170!!! Cheers!" If I have any drinks prior to reaching my goal, it destroys that vision and opportunity to have such a great party! Man! I don't want to blow that! And the funny thing is, I haven't had the desire to drink anyway! Could it be because my focus has been diverted towards something a lot more exciting and certainly more rewarding?!!! I totally agree intentional. I want people to look at me and say she works out whoa! I am sure you do too you want your efforts to show and you should! You've done such an awesome job MM! I believe that in order to give people the inspiration to get fit and healthy we have to look "intentionally" very fit and healthy. So agreed MM. You go on with your fit, bad, self! T

Thread: A little upset with a friend... (213 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (791 posts) at 01:06 AM:
Thanks guys! Like I've said before, who needs Dr. Phil when I've got you guys?!!! I think a little background is in order... This event tonight is just one of many over the last several years. Not sure it is relevant but it was my wife that her husband ran off with back in 1993. We both went through painful divorces together. He left her and her 2 infant children behind. She never really dealt with the issues involved and I think she blames me in some way... I feel like she stopped investing in the friendship a long time ago. It's as if she tolerates my friendship but doesn't value it. She looks down on my focus on fitness as being 'ungodly', that I'm too obsessed. All through my challenges with illness she has said things implying that I'm too weak and I became her project. It never seemed to occur to her that maybe Jim REALLY was sick, and that it wasn't just all in his head. We had a falling out in 2003 because I got fed up with her and her brother always treating me like a child and constantly telling me how to live my life. She's a negative person and I think she views my optimism as a sign of weakness. I don't think she has ever really grasped just how sick I've been because when I'm around my friends, I always do my best to be cheerful and have fun, even if it means going home later exhausted. I suppose if I moaned and groaned it would have given me some credibility! Anyway, dealing with this friendship is important for me to be successful in BFL. It's just not healthy to have friendships where you invest so much and all you get back is crumbs. I know deep down she cares for me, but at what point do you say that that is not enough? I have had several heart to heart talks with her and the result is always the same. She's upset I'm not taking her advice - which I never ask for!. That she's trying to help me but I just won't listen. Of course I won't listen to her advice when she's trying to get me to be more 'realistic' and drop my 'childish dreams'. She has never supported my fitness or self-improvement efforts. For long-term success in BFL, this relationship has to change for the better or I'll have to distance myself from her. Since we've been like family for so long, I doubt if I'll ever break off the friendship, but frankly sometimes I ask myself 'What friendship?'. BTW -- I brought my Rocketwing over to the bible study calling it 'a rolling praise report!'...The response? "Oh, that's the red bike that's been sitting in your living room...(yawn) I've seen it before." I might as well have been talking to the wall... I'm tellin ya'! I'm looking at some of my friendships here and wonder if I shouldn't just hop on my bike and ride away! Jim (Ok Goddessa! Rocket Man!)

Body for Life Forum Message by ChubbyMcChubbs (610 posts) at 01:41 AM:
I agree with the above responses. Christie took the words straight from my fingertips...misery loves company. It appears that she is dependent on you being dependent upon her....or so she thinks. Since she didn't (nor you) have control over the divorces, she decided to take control of you. I agree with Lisa about taking time to think before speaking/writing her. I would go and enjoy your break in CC. When you come back, re-analyze your situation and decide if it is a friendship that is worth working on. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to cut your losses. Negativity is completely counterproductive, especially with our new and improved BFL lifestyles. Your "friend" is probably very bitter. She needs to let it go. She needs to forgive and release, otherwise, she will be angry and ALONE. Hugs, Melanie

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (791 posts) at 01:48 AM:
My gosh chubby! You've nailed her on the issues related to the divorce! Her hubby has been saying the same thing for a long time. She is absolutely bitter..and angry! And she has never grieved the losses... Actually, I had distanced myself from her for a couple of years but I got sucked back in by the hope that we could be close friends again...silly me! Jim

Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (988 posts) at 05:47 AM:
Distancing yourself a little sounds like a good idea. You don't have to kill the relationship completely, just step back. Remember she has tried in her way, for whatever reasons to help you. Probably the best way she has helped you is with her prayers. Maybe that's the kind of help she needs now, too.

Body for Life Forum Message by cheller (92 posts) at 06:50 AM:
jshelton, I'm new to the board and don't know you well but I feel like i can sya this since you eluded in your post that you stopped by a bible study. I too am a Christian and find that when I am moving forward and doing what I feel is great things Satan can and will throw a speed bump in my path. It sounds like you have had a great number of painful and hurtful things happen in your life over the years. But maybe just maybe there was a conversation like this between God and satan satan: God, jshelton is mine. He can't handle all that I can throw at him. God: Yes, jshelton can handle everything because he believes in me and will surpass all my expectations. satan: prove it then, let me hav him. God: you do anything you want satan because he is mine and will aways be. Do everything you want but do not kill him. okay, I'm sure you know the ending to this little story but if you haven't heard it in awhile go back and read the book of Job. Please believe me when I say that you have every right to be hurt and upset about what your friend has been doing to you. God wants good things in our lives but maybe you are here good thing and she needs you in her life. The old saying really is true. We hurt the ones we love the most. Be bigger than her. Let her know that you were hurt by her outburst but that you have gotten over it and would like to know if she is stuggeling with anything that you might be able to help her with. There is a wonderful book and DVD series about this very issue called The Bait of Satan by John Bevere. It is life changing and will change your prespective on the offences that have occured in you life. Try to find it and read it again and again and again. I hope you don't mind the very long input from someone who doesn't know your complete story but I just felt that I should share this with you.

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (791 posts) at 11:34 AM:
Once again I'm so impressed by you guys! I had a night to sleep on it and I feel I have a pretty good grasp of what it going on... What really upset me was not so much her disrespect for me, but rather her disrespect for our friendship. I rarely get upset but when I see something or someone I value greatly being threatened, it really gets me going. Yes, her comments were rude but I understand her well enough to know that the reasons for her insulting remarks really have nothing to do with me. In a nutshell, she doesn't feel good about herself and she projects that onto her relationships. I'm smart enough to know that you can't get close to such a person unless you are willing to settle for a 'toxic' relationship. I settled for that before BFL...but I no longer will... I believe my success in BFL is a big threat to her self-esteem ("If Jim can lose weight even with a chronic hormonal disorder, then I must be a real loser to not be able to even stick with a diet!"). And yes, I do believe that there is always a spiritual battle going on behind the scenes. Satan wants to drag us down and he'll use whatever he can to attack you and your relationships. So I've decided the best thing for me to do is to step back and make sure I take care of myself. I still value her friendship but I can't do her part...The door will remain open but she is the one who will have to step through it...I hope she does, because I know I could help her a great deal...if only she would let me... Meanwhile...I'm gonna keep on truckin'!!! Jim

I realized that it was my old way of thinking that pulled me down not what I had eaten. I have to keep reminding myself that this is not a diet that it is a life style. I also had to remind myself that it takes 21 days to learn a new "habit" so give yourself some breathing room get refocused and move on. You will do this, You will finish your 12 weeks and You will look and feel 200% better than you ever have.

One day at a time. 3 pieces of pizza, does not a failure make. We have all been there.... "Oh, well, I screwed up, and I will just eat the whole carton of ice cream as well." Today is a new day. Make it a great one. Do a few extra reps in your workout, and you will feel better, it always works for me.

You're not a failure in any way. You are human, and you are just starting out. You can't change it, and beating yourself up about it will do nothing but make you feel bad, and this program is supposed to make you feel GOOD. Young Guns said it exactly right: it's the self-destructive thinking that brings us down. This is for LIFE, and 3 slices of pizza and dessert one day in your whole life will not make you fail this program. Get right back up and have a good day today. :)

Thread: Been doin' a little gardening... (95 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (791 posts) at 03:29 AM: Been doin' a little gardening...
Hi gang! Well, we all know that BFL is about so much more than just rebuilding your body...it's about rebuilding your life as well. It's inevitable that once you finally decide that you will no longer settle for a body born of neglect and abuse, that you will likely raise your standards in other areas of your life... Today, I thought of my life as a garden that had fallen into disarray...all one could see for years was the overgrown weeds...I was no longer proud of the garden I used to brag about...and made sure to keep the blinds closed to hide it from everyone else. Surely, someday I wanted to have a beautiful garden again, but frankly it looked hopeless...Even experienced gardeners thought my dream was unrealistic - there were just too many weeds... But then a ray of light pointed to a small patch of fertile ground. It was as if God was telling me that after all these years it was finally time to plant again...All my neighbors said that I was foolish to expect a beautiful plant to flourish in a garden filled with so many weeds...All they could see were the weeds but all I could see was an incredibly magnificent plant that someday would bloom in all it's heavenly splendor... So I planted the seed and began watering it everyday...I was so anxious to finally see it bloom...but I knew there were no shortcuts...it would take patience, persistence and faith...but someday my faith would be rewarded with this beautiful plant and I would begin to enjoy the boundless fruits it would bear... Well, finally my body is bearing the fruits of my determined efforts and my persistent faith...What a blessing it is! Seemed like no one thought I would 'garden' again...but they were oh so wrong! But guess what! I'm just getting started! I've 'pulled' a lot of those 'weeds' in my garden but there is still more to do...It's quite simple...Once you have a beautiful plant in your garden, you are no longer willing to settle for the weeds that have been there for so long... For me, it's time to look at my garden and take care of the relationships in my life. I need to discern which ones are weeds and should just be pulled - and which ones just need a little loving care for them to once again be the beautiful flower I once cherished... It's obvious that a few new plants are also needed...And now, there is another ray of light pointing to a new patch of fertile ground...Could it be that God wants me to plant a new seed - one that will eventually bloom into a relationship with the woman I will share my life with? Of course, I hope so...but perhaps I'll have to wait until the next 'spring' before I know... I hope so much that transforming your body empowers and inspires you to also transform your life... I'm not quite there yet, but I'm getting the feeling that you can't have a magnificent body and be content with a mediocre life... Jim

Hi Jim, I just needed to tell you that I always read your post and check your new pictures all the time. Your truely doing amazing and becouse of you I bought a bike rack for my jeep and this weekend Im taking 15 yrs of dust off of my bike. My fiance and I are gong to make Sat mornings bike ride mornings and hopefully it all goes well next spring I'll be buying a new bike.I know it will be rough at first but I like your Gardening talk.. I have alot of weeds to go and becouse of Khubbard I started puting in extra cardio in the morning and weights at night just to kick it up a notch. I've lost 40 lbs since jan o4 and since last august I got stuck .. been in the same place for almost a yr. And 2 weeks ago I gained 10 lbs and I have only been able to drop 2 of those. I almost gave up. But this morning while telling myself why I chose to do extra cardio in the morning, I was talking myself into 10 min then I think of your post and say, no If can do 10 I can do 20. Then I think well I'll take it easy and do low speed then I think, wait, these weeds will keep growing if I dont pull them out faster. So in short , Thank you so much. keep it up. Post my second challange starting pics soon and I hope in 2 weeks I break this platuea so I can proudly post 4 week. Awsome work, Andrea

BTW -- I think my post might give the impression that I've started a romantic relationship. But no, I don't have any special woman in my life yet, I'm still on my own. However, I've just been feeling lately that maybe it's not that far away... Thanks again! Jim

Hi everyone, Well I have stopped BFL for almost a month now due to my fathers death. Things have been very rough latley. My mom is having a very difficult time with his passing ( they were married almost 38 years)and my older sister has not been making the situation any better. I have moved in with my mom so that she is not alone and I am going back and forth to my house during lunch to take care of my dogs. I have gained 5 lbs back but I will probably lose that due to being sick right now. If all would have went well my 1st challenge would have been over on May 16th. Well, I will try to start bringing my self back to the program, because I KNOW IT WORKS. I also know that diet is 80% of this so if I can atleast get that part down again I can add in the workouts whenever I get a chance. I hope all is well with each of you, good luck and God Bless! Brenda

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My grandma , who was really like my mom, she raised me, passed away during my first challenge. It was awful. But I stuggled through. And let me say from experience....Sticking with the bfl program will help you feel stronger mentally and physically so you can be there for your mom to lean on. God bless you Brenda. Alice

Thread: Switching gears (61 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (340 posts) at 07:35 AM: Switching gears
So last challenge, it seemed like from one week to the next I had HUGE visible changes. Those of you who saw my weekly photos know what I'm talking about. This challenge, the HUGE weekly changes haven't been happening in as HUGE of a way. So I decided to evaluate, and this is what I have figured out: When you're riding a bike with multiple gears, you use different gears for different situations. Big inclines, you use little gears and pedal like mad. Big declines, big gears and grind it out. The goal is to keep a similar cadence throughout your riding, and to effect the most speed at the least effort. My first challenge was like learning to ride a road bike on a flat, slightly declined surface. Easy riding, get your balance, learn to coordinate all of the actions you need to while balancing on something that you can lift with a few fingers and has maybe 3 inches by 3/4 touching the ground in the front and back. That's it. Not an EASY thing to do, but once you get the hang of it after some practice, you are FLYING. I mean, you've got some pretty big wheels and they're built for SPEED. The wind is in your hair and you feel amazing. End challenge one right here... Begin challenge 2: Oh... uh... is that a hill I see up there? Well, it's the same hard surface... it can't go on for too long... it's not THAT bad - I'll just attack it and pedal through it. Pedaling... uh, this is getting tougher. Climbing, pedaling...uh, folks, we're slowing down quite a bit... pedaling...uh I'm gonna have to do something or I will end up falling over if I go any slower. Meanwhile I'm watching people fly by on their own rides, and wondering how the heck they're going so FAST. Then...wait a minute... what if I click this little lever here. Click. Pick up speed just a bit. Pedaling easier. Click. Oh, that's quite a bit better. There's one on the other side - lemme try that. Click. Chain slowly clicks onto a smaller ring. BINGO!!!!!!! And here we go, picking up a bit of speed, but man is this easier. So this challenge I've been busting my butt to maintain the speed at which I was losing. Trying to keep pedaling fast, but noticing physical changes a good bit slower. I realized that I've been coming up on that incline, not even noticing the situation was changing - getting to that place where you transition from really being "fat" to "ok, NOW it's time to refine your body and really get it not just looking OK, but looking and feeling really amazing". That last 30 lbs... At this point, I'm finally realizing that it's time to change gears - to make the decision that I'm not going to slow down until I can't ride anymore and have to get off and walk the bike. I'm not settling for walking the bike up the hill. (You KNOW you have done this before - even as a kid) Yeah, I could walk it up - I would still make it to the top of the hill, but it would take me longer, and I WANT TO SEE THE VIEW ON THE OTHER SIDE!!! So... I am switching gears. I know that I'm getting ready to crest that hill and pick up speed - maybe by the end of this week, maybe in week 5 or 6. But right now, all I need to think about is changing gears so I can CLIMB THAT HILL I'm on. Changing gears, changing my mindset to meet myself where I am in the reality of this moment, and not where I want to be in the next. Knowing and planning what I have to do to GET where I want to be, but not worrying that I'm not there already. Because guess what? I'm still pedaling. And I'm picking up speed. And I'm CLIMBING A HILL, PICKING UP SPEED - no small feat. And I AM going to get there - by the end of this challenge. Click.

Good for you! I just love these analogies. So how does "changing gears" apply to your actual challenge? What will you change?

But it's a good thing, lol! Today is my birthday. I'm 29. Again. (I have 4 years' experience at it :P) I wasn't going to take today as a free day, but people at work who have no reason to know it's my birthday have been saying,"so... your birthday's Wednesday, huh?" So I've decided that, rather than stress about food and cake, etc., I'm going to enjoy whatever happens today, make it my free day, and stay on plan the rest of the week. Here's to another year, this one entirely focused on good health!

I had to go to field trips with my boys Monday and Tuesday and I have another one to go to today. Then they have had baseball practice the last two nights, and tonight is church. They have games both Thursday and Friday nights. My boys are in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade, and then I am having to bring my 3 year old and 1 year old with my to everything, so it has been unbelievably crazy!!! I am fixing to do my upper body now because I have 2 hours before we need to leave for this field trip. Anyway, enjoy your day!!!!! Elisa

Were you having stomach problems? I was diagnosed with IBS and they said if I didn't improve, they'd do a colonoscopy on me too. That procedure doesn't sound like fun, even though they knock you out. Well, that did it for me! I met a specialist during C1 Week 1 and he gave me a list of high fiber foods to eat. Since they were all BFL approved foods, I was able to get them in. Ever since, I've had no problems!!! I don't even take medication any more! What week are you on? If you are just starting your challenge, you may give the food a couple of weeks. Your symptoms may improve. Hope you feel better soon! Danielle

I have been having stomach problems for the past few years and colon diseases run in my family so they wanted to test me. The doctor says its IBS on top of my lactose intolerance. I have always eaten healthy foods (weight watchers queen:)) so my only alternative is to continue doing what I am and take medicine to help it out...thanks for all your advice!!! I really want to see a difference in week 12 so it frustrates me to have this right as soon as Im trying to make changes. thanks again

I've had a colonoscopy, and they didn't give me enough drugs! I was awake and aware through the whole thing, then once it was done I was out for like 2 hours. I was already sick before it, and was still sick after it. They found out later I had Salmonella poisoning and probably didn't need to do a colonoscopy. But I know how horrible it is to go through! And I would say to take it easy, eat what you can and relax for awhile. :)

I had one about a year ago (35 yr old) and it's no fun that's for sure. There are worse things though. The medication worked well for me (made me sleepy enough that I don't remember it). I thought the worst part was the night before with that gallon of stuff to drink. UGH....

Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (488 posts) at 01:00 PM:
Here's some info on high fiber: Scan food labels for bread and cereal products listing whole grain or whole wheat as the first ingredient. Look for cooked and ready to eat cereals with at least 3 grams of fiber per serving. Eat raw fruits and vegetables; they have more fiber than cooked or canned foods, or juice. Dried fruits (especially dried figs) are also good sources of fiber. Increase fiber in meat dishes by adding pinto beans, kidney beans, black-eyed peas, bran, or oatmeal. Try adding 2-3 tsp. of unprocessed wheat bran to foods such as meatloaf, casseroles, homemade breads, muffins and other baked goods. Dairy foods provide little fiber. Increase fiber by adding fresh fruit, whole grain or bran cereals, nuts, or seeds to yogurt or cottage cheese. Chopping, peeling, cooking, pureeing, and processing may reduce fiber content Substitute oat bran for one third of all purpose flour in baked goods recipes. Best to eat a variety of foods and not to rely on a fiber supplement Do it gradually—rapid fiber increase may result in gas, cramping, bloating, or diarrhea. Drink plenty of fluids—at least 8 cups every day. Obviously, not all their recommendations are BFL approved. But just increasing my veggies and adding oatmeal as one of my daily carbs helped a lot. hey gang I have not been contributing much to the board lately because quite frankly I have not done much lately to get all excited about. I have been completely over the pnemonia for a month now and have slowly been getting back into gear, but I found that I was missing something.Last weekend I decided to change gyms. I am very much a people person and enjoy meeting and talking to people, but not when I workout. I had been a member at my old gym for 7 years, and working out every morning everyone knows me and it just got to be more of a social time than a hard core workout time. I am very happy being anonomous again I have had great workouts this week. I have been lurking around the board secretly cheering for Jim and his bike and Udenia and the navy news but too ashamed of my inactivity to post.I guess the good news is that I am back at it, the bad news is that now you have to put up with my sarcastic wit again!

So I am just starting my LBWO, and in walks Mike Alstott!!! For those of you who do not know who this is, he is only the most awesome full back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a.k.a. the "A TRAIN". OH YEAH BABY! Talk about inspiration for my workout :> Don't worry, I played it totally cool, didn't bother him at all just went about my workout even though he was like 2 feet away from me. I cannot say the same about this girl there, she started the whole "I'm stupid act". I was like, you have been here for 20 minutes working out just fine and all of a sudden you don't know what a 45 pound weight looks like? As I was leaving, he was heading to the desk and we crossed paths and we exchanged "hey's". Oh yeah, I totally spoke to Mike Alstott!!! I am so pumped! Turns out my hubby knows the guy he was working out with, the grew up together. Pretty cool huh? I couldn't wait to get to work and share my most awesome news with all my new friends!!! Make today fabulous!!! Jo

T is right - technically it is called either hydrostatic or hydrodensitometry. Are you thinking of BIA? (Bioelectric Impedence Analysis) - that's what Tanita scales and the ormron testers use - shoots a current through your body and feeds back a resistance measurement on the current. Uses your height and weight and age to calculate a bodyfat % from there....

For all of those out there that hit a rut or feel so bored they do not want to go on, listen for a sec! I do as well, ok,, no one is exempt from feeling like they "JUST WANT TO GIVE IT A REST!".. but then you need to weigh what is important in your life and will quitting help you meet that goal! PROBABLY NOT! So take yesterday for example,, I WAS  BEAT,,, and my legs were throbbing, I had to stay late at work, had visitors from Millington, TN there, didn't get out until almost 5:00 pm Hawaii time and then got stuck in traffic for pretty close to an hour, got home just to hug my UUMMM BBAAAHHH and I told mom,, MAN I AM BEAT, so tired,,, and I did think about bypassing my workout this morning and take a rest,, but by the time I went to bed, I had already talked myself into the morning workout, laid out my gear, put my water bottle in the frig, made up my lunch.. NO EXCUSES, I know if I didn't do it this morning, this FIGHT IS ON! So boys, BRING IT! Because this girl's FIRE IS LIT.....  :)-

I have actually been doing really well and got my weight back down to below where I ended C1. I weighed 199 this morning. I have decided I will lift upper body at the gym on Tuesdays and Fridays until I get my cast off and do abs at home on days I am not lifting. Hopefully all the extra ab work will really pay off.

You said in another post that you have suffered from IBS and your doctor gave you high fiber foods. Do you mind me asking what they were? I've suffered my whole life. I can go 3-4 weeks with out having a BM. I've tried bulk laxatives (metamusil), stool softeners, and medical laxitives and nothing works. Since I started BFL it hasn't improved. Thanks for helping. Sue

Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (3 posts) at 11:38 AM:
Something that is kinda gross that has helped me is about a cup of prune juice (unsweetened natural juice) warmed up...its not so bad once you try it and it has helped me some in the past. Might try it, you never know:)

Body for Life Forum Message by CHRISTREIGNS77 (32 posts) at 11:40 AM:
i don't want to hijack this thread but have a lot of knowledge in this particular area..you don't want to use laxatives, they are habit forming for the colon and actually will make it lazier, people also think more fiber, more fiber and that can be true, but not always, it is a bulking agent and will actually constipate you further if you don't have enough water and exercise, fruits and vegetables need to be in abundance in the diet as well, not just whole grains/cereals for fiber..softeners are a good temporary fix because your stool has to be very hard to pass from sitting in the colon for week/weeks at a time..i strongly recommend you look into colonics, using water (3-5 gallons at a time,2-3 times a week for a period of 2-3 months) can work wonders for your colon's strength, prevent disease/cancer, allow you to resume normal bowel function, even resolve many undiagnosed health issues stemming from the colon blockage..the putrefication of that fecal waste(sorry to be so graphic) can really make you ill in many area..hope this helps..you may want to also check out any books by Doctor Bernard Jensen, he is extremely knowledgeable about IBS, and all colon issues..good luck susan

Body for Life Forum Message by Hoping for a lot (68 posts) at 12:26 PM:
Christreigns77 - have you used colonics before? I just looked it up and I don't know where I would go for that, and it seems expensive for the home kit. Did it work for you?

Body for Life Forum Message by tricia (132 posts) at 01:08 PM:
I am using the kit from Drnatura.com. It consists of herbal pills, mix, and tea. I like the way it is working. So far so good. I suggest flaxseed oil....you can take 2 capsules with every meal. Eat the highest fiber you can. Bread....at least 5g per slice,WW tortillas and pasta and lots of veggies and fruit.

Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (283 posts) at 01:14 PM:
I've done the colonics but at that rate I would be flat broke. I pay 70$ per session so I couldn't do more than three.

Body for Life Forum Message by Hoping for a lot (68 posts) at 01:17 PM:
Supergirl - did the colonics work for you? It's a lot of money to shell out if you don't know if it will work.

Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (283 posts) at 01:21 PM:
yes, they worked but not long term, I am still struggling to figure out how to get regular every day. It's frustrating. It's starting to worry me since I am getting a lot of fiber, plus drinking over a gallon of water a day, exercising and eating really well. if you go back to that colonoscopy post, Supafreak did answer the question of the high fiber foods.

Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (283 posts) at 01:23 PM:
3-4 weeks is a super long time not to "go" though....that sounds pretty serious to me.....not sure what to say about that but I've been thinking of going to see a proctologist..maybe you should consider that too..?

Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (488 posts) at 01:27 PM:
Well, here's a list of high fiber foods: Grain Products: whole grain breads, buns, bagels, muffins Bran Flakes, All Bran, Red River cereal, Corn bran cereal, whole wheat Shreddies Brown rice, whole-grain pastas Fruits: dried fruits (apricots, dates, prunes, raisins), blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, oranges Vegetables: broccoli, dried peas and beans (e.g. kidney, lima, beans, chick peas, lentils and soy beans), corn

Body for Life Forum Message by Hoping for a lot (68 posts) at 01:28 PM:
My doctor just tells me to eat more fiber, but obviously that doesn't work. Maybe I'll look into a proctologist and see if they can do anything. Thanks for the advise.

Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (488 posts) at 01:30 PM:
To clarify--my problem was not constipation. I had issues with foods triggering long, terrible trips to the bathroom. I have at least 3 BMs a day, but in the past, they were not always solid. Adding fiber, for my particular situation has helped a lot. But, I agree with what CHRISTREIGNS77 wrote in that high fiber may not help everyone with IBS. This is just what works for me. Danielle

Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (488 posts) at 01:32 PM:

sorry was off the comp, just saw this again, yes I have done the home colonics and the ones done in an office (the one I went to was a small colon therapy office, took half hour, cost 30 bucks, I couldn't continue it for as long as recommended cuz of price as someone mentioned before) but I believe even 5 times will get you started in the right direction, you may want to see a gi person also because not going for more than a day or 2 is serious, yet alone 2-3 weeks!! that is extremely dangerous! good luck susan

Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (283 posts) at 01:42 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by Lovey75 (286 posts) at 11:30 AM: Ever get stuck at a car dealership?
I did last night, I stopped in to test drive a Honda Accord. Three and a half hours later, AND NO DINNER, I drove home with a new Pilot. I hate when the guy you are working with runs back and forth about 30 times and I AM SO HUNGRY. I was going out of my bleeping mind. My wife ended up happy, with a new vehicle for her, but the thing is we were supposed to be getting me a car. Guess I'm a pushover.

Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (340 posts) at 12:00 PM:
Yep - I showed up at the honda dealer in august with CASH for a CRV, a written price, and knew exactly the model and color I wanted, which they had in-stock. 4 hours later I left with it, paid what I wanted, and had basically the deal I had walked in and asked for, but the sales guy seemed to think he needed to earn his commission for those 4 hours. Ridiculous... He would have made more if I'd left with the car in 30 minutes and he served other shoppers....

Wouldnt it be nice if a car dealership was more like the grocery store. You walk in, pick out your car, go to the cash register, whip out your checkbook or debit/credit card or cash and pay the sticker price and be done. how long would that take? picking out the vehicle you like, and test driving it to make sure it fit you and it was the vehicle you would be comfortable with for the next couple years? 45 mins to an hour. Of course you would have to pay sticker price because wheeling and dealing would add some time to the process. You would not be able to trade your current vehicle in because it takes too long for those dumb car guys to appraise your vehicle. do some carfax checks to make sure your car was never in a flood or in a major car wreck, or had a branded title, get all the information for your exact payoff on your vehicle from your bank. You also would not be able to finance it because it takes more time for the customer to fill out the bank authorized credit application and pull your credit, shop the different lenders to find the best interest rate for the customer. Check what rebates are avilable at that time for that vehicle, have you sign all the documents that the bank requires to get a loan. Of course you would need 6 or 7 cash registers open at all times because you wouldnt want to have to wait if there were customers there before you. of course I have never spent 20 to 30 thousand dollars at a grocery store in 45 mins to an hour, but it sure would be nice.

Rod...I would just like to pay for a car with a check. LOL. Lovey....the Pilot drives like a like a dream......smooth ride. I have a Passport which rides like a truck but I love it. I got fed up while buying mine (because I was very hungry) so I left, got some food, and ate it in front of the salesman...HA!

I don't do Dealerships anymore. I had a client of mine who was a manager, the whole back and forth thing was a sham.

I figure out what I want, drive a friends version and buy a one year old vehicle off the net or third party. I don't buy new.

I bought a Sequioa this year, actually had to go to one dealer to test drive it as no one I knew had one. Tahoe's now those everyone had. I basically went in drove and left, knowing their price. I had two messages on work phone too before I got back.

Bought it in TX, had it shipped to CA and saved $5k!!

I went in to a dealership about 45 days ago, wanting to trade off my Expedition for a smaller car that got good gas mileage. I actually called the sale play by play to my girlfriend ( I know how they work there...manager comes over with the "this is our best price ever deal", and if you hesitate, hes like "oh I can do a bit better" ) Anyways after 2 hrs of that I left with not 1 but 2 new cars, and all that for only $100 a month more than just my Expedition. The GF is happy, but I didn't get to buy the new Subaru WRX STI I wanted.....ahh well the chevy cavalier is decent transportation I guess... now to get the windows tinted to all black so I'm not seen driving it....j/k

I've been stuck at a car dealership for 6 years....longest of my life! We have never chased a customer out the door though, boss is a stingy tighta$$ who won't give in even a little! I'm surprised he hasn't been run out of town yet! :)

You know though - about the grocery store thing Rod... the big issue I have is that when you KNOW what you want, HAVE the $$ in-hand, and don't have to do all that bargaining, credit check crap, they STILL keep you for hours and hours. As I said before, I went in with a cashier's check (basically cash) for the exact amount and said "here - I want THAT one right there. I don't need financing, and I don't want to be here forever - this will be the easiest commission you've ever made". The guy started hemming and hawing and had to go back and forth to his manager like 15 times. Each time, my response was exactly the same - "You quoted THIS price to me over the phone. YES I am sure it was YOU. I got your NAME. You quoted the price to me, and I'm not paying a penny more. I am not playing games, and if you keep doing this, I will leave and just deposit this $$ right back into my bank account where it came from." And I really think he felt he had to earn his commission....

Hey I agree, cash in hand with an agreed upon price, depending on if there are customers in the business office before you should take only 20 to 25 mins.

Body for Life Forum Message by Athletic4Life (172 posts) at 03:32 PM:
Wow, Willow, I did not realize you had a quote from the same place and all.

A while back, I had a car I wanted, checked it out in the town I was in, knew what I wanted, color and all. The car happened to be in high demand, so the dealer marked up $1000 and would not come down. Then he told me this is the best deal, and for what I wanted there was only one even near area. If I waited this one would be gone!

Idiot! Got on the Internet, this is back in the 56k days! Found it 50 miles away, called got a price - got a check and off I went. I told the guy I was having a friend drive me (he had an appt close) and that he CANT dick around with me as I was driving it back.

This guy, Woody (I kid you not) picked me up from a freeway exit, delivered me to my car, had everything ready - I was at the dealer 35 minutes and I was already driving away!

I referred a lot of business to that guy but it was the last new car I ever bought

We use Costco to purchase a car. There is no hassle, no waiting, etc. You pick which model you want, show them you are an executive member, and they give you the price that Costco has set for that vehicle. You save quite a bit of money and don't have to deal with all the nonsense. It's pretty darn close to the "grocery store" idea. My family all uses their Costco membership to buy their cars. When my aunt worked for Toyota, she was able to purchase up to 2 vehicles for family per year. I was able to buy a brand new vehicle with 3 miles on it for less than the dealership pays because it was directly from the factory. I went to Fremont, CA to pick it up and loved it. It was even nicer to know I paid thousands and thousands less than what I would have at a dealership. We have a few friends that swear by Ebay for their cars. They have purchased several cars off Ebay in the past few years and have never had any regrets. Great cars at a great price. When we go to buy a truck, we will probably get one off Ebay because there are SO many available in Texas for a LOT less than what we would pay up here. Melanie = )

Man these weeks go by fast. I remember calling out a few names when i first started and that was damn near 3 months ago. I can't help but feel conflicted as i start my 12th week. On one hand i am happy with my progress on the other i am totally pissed that i didn't start earlier. I now weight exactly what i did when i graduated this time last year. I wasn't happy then with the weight either. Its like damn had i started at that size it would be all good. But on the other hand i am glad that i can now feel as if i am taking control. I wish it only took 12 weeks for me to be happy with myself but at least a year from now i won't have to say damn i wish i started a year ago. And for that i am grateful

Just for my information: What are the benifits of using flax seed or flax seed oil? Which form is reccomended? Any bad side effects?

Body for Life Forum Message by Melissa1411 (27 posts) at 12:37 PM:
Flax seed is just like fish oil. It is an omega-3 product/supplement that inhibits inflammation and the inflammatory process. It counter balances the inflamatory foods you put in your body. This also helps close the pain gates of COX 2and3 and LOX 2and3. Omega-3s trun the pathway to COX 1 and LOX 1 which DECREASE pain!!! Make sense? Pretty technical answer but that is it basically! There are no side effects to Flax Seed/oil and everyone should take at least 100mg a day as a daily supplement! I use the organic seeds (ground up) which makes it easy to add to oatmeal and shakes or on cereal if you eat it.

Body for Life Forum Message by tricia (132 posts) at 01:02 PM:
I was reading that flaxseed oil is good for joint health, depression, and cardiovascular health. There are no side effects that I know of.

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (647 posts) at 02:20 PM:
From what I understand, use ground flax seed as opposed to the whole seed. It comes out the same way it went in therefore your body is not absorbing it.

I ran a thread on this a while back, sure wish I could give you the date but you can search on my profile and see, I looked it up and the bottom scoop is plus Melissa's post which she is right, it gives the body the correct kind of fat so the body won't STORE fat. It helps the body to burn what you have and also helps it function properly... So if you want to get the right kind of fat and can't eat Salmon all week, or when you are really strick on your diet, you can take the Flaxseed capsules! I take 3 a day when I am eating fish and 6 a day when I have cut all fat out of my diet! Keeps everything moving in the right direction! :)-

Up until May of 2004, I was a teacher. A majorly burned out, stressed, hating my job special education teacher for 12 years. My DH (cruz9095) decided enough was enough, told me to quit my job and he took on a second full time job so that I could have a year off to recharge my batteries and find a new career. Well, I am returning to school. No, not as the teacher, but as the student. I'm going to school to get my accounting degree. So, hopefully in about 1 1/2 years, I'll be back in the workforce and my DH can cut back the second job and we can have a more normal life again. I've made mental changes this year and now working on physical changes. All in all, I think the future looks good!

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (647 posts) at 08:49 PM:
Getherdone - I get the same thing all the time too. Quite honestly, even though it doesn't feel this way, the alcohol causes dehydration and that can mimic hunger (for me anyway). Also alcohol can be a lot of carbs. After carb overload the next day I'm starving. One other thing, a hangover (I know thats not your case) is also alcohol withdrawl. Since you are in "withdrawl" your body is craving something - its like a hollow empty feeling isn't it? This is from my "vast experinece" and own analysis. Tracey

At first I just thought it was from working out...but lately after I workout, especially after triceps and biceps...it really aches. Not like the usual after workout stiffness. Could this be Tendionitis (spelling)..and if it is..how do you correct the problem? I tried lowering the weights on the leftside..but still seems to act up. Any suggestions? Anyone else have a similar symptom?

please don't try to diagnose yourself!! If it is painful enough to disrupt your workouts and is progressivly getting more bothersome rather than better see a Dr and nip this in the bud!! Your body is telling you something at fist it wispers and if you don't listen it gets louder till it is screaming don't wait for the screaming, It could be nothing at all (hopefully)and your doctor can recommend treatment or if it is the start of a more serious impending injury you deffinaly want to get it taken care of or at least find out what is causing it you may need to modify your form or something that simple. If this is something that requires long term anti inflamatories script from the Doc is better not as hard on your stomach as over the counter drugs...Good luck to you :)

Yeah, it's really bad for you to follow a program that people have worked for years and years to perfect the principles needed to burn fat and gain muscle/increase strength. I mean, why would you want to get stronger and leaner? Why would you want to increase your metabolism? Of course this guy was not free was he? I'm sure he charges a nice, pretty sum for his "special weight-loss wisdom".... Besides, you could always do a printout of the ab bootcamp and give it to him later when you've got a six-pack, saying "well, I remembered you were interested in stregthening your core..."

A personal trainer was at the front desk last week when I came into my gym. He saw that I was carring the BFL book....Well I pretty much got the same spill. So I waited until he finished his sales pitch and then I gave him mine. I told him that last year I hired a personal trainer, got my own personalized program etc, etc. But the clincher is that they can't give you a diet to follow. with all the weights etc that i was doing, i was increasing my strength, but the fat was not coming off. I knew that to look as good as I could, I would need to find a way that I could eat healthy and get the results! The BFL is a full package deal. It makes sense and is not anything too far out or unrealistic! I believe this is one program that I can do for LIFE!!!! That's what I told the trainer...He didn't have too much to say when I asked him what program he could put me on that would keep giving results and helping me to push myself time and time again. He didn't have one! And then he changed his tune and said "well I guess if you are going to follow the diet and exercises exactly like it says in the book, then it is a good program. But most people that try it - can't follow the diet and don't take the supplements, so it won't work for them." I am a true defender of the BFL. And one day I will be a walking billboard for BFL! I swear when I hear stories like this it makes me sad that these trainers give the good ones such a BAD name. **Shudder** BTW that would have pissed me off as well to approach me out of know where talk to me for 2 min and then sales pitch me and then follow it with an insult to my workout routine. ** shudder again** T

I have the3 same deal with this trainer(the one who did my "assesment"when I first joined "can you commit to just 3 days of cardio perweek?????" I see him there every day now, and I have the feeling that he and some of the others are mocking me just a bit. Then he was short with me last week when I asked to get my BF checked "AGAIN?? WHY????"and tried to tell me once a month was the max I was allowed(total bull crap)that battle isn't over yet, yikes. I paid for an upgrade so I could get it tested a lot for cryin out loud. I couldn't resist telling him I'd lost 10 lbs in 6 weeks. Now I think he dosnt know what to think. W'ell see. Lets both show 'em whats up, Alright?? YEAH! Jamber

tricia - I sure can relate! A few months ago when I was 6 weeks into C1, John,a senior trainer at the gym asked me how much cardio I was doing. I told him and he said "Oh no! You must do at least 45 minutes a day 4-6 days a week to lose fat!" I told him about BFL and he scoffed, saying it wouldn't work very well for losing weight. Then I told him I had lost 30 lbs in 6 weeks! "Well! Jim...uh...just keep doing what you're doing...I guess..." Everytime I run into John I tell'em my latest status... "Hi John!...down 42 lbs..." "Hi John!...down 57 lbs..." "Hi John!.. down 75 lbs..." Today, I wanted to tel him I was down 82 lbs, but lately he's been walking the other way when he sees me!!! Ain't that a hoot?!!!" Jim

Most of the trainers you see in the gym are stnding around with their hands in their pockets. People they are training are taking 5 minutes between sets and are doing a lot of talking and little working. Some of the trainers you see are out of shape and dont have a clue about training. I was a body builder up until 12 years ago. I had lifted and trained daily for 12 years. Married and the kids kind of got me out of routine. These so called trainers I see in my gym make me laugh. Anyway enough of that I am in week 5 and really droping fat. I have gained a few ilbs but I did bench 315lbs today and I started at 185

Still having a little sinus problem and a lot of coughing all night, but getting better. I missed HIIT on monday and was determined to get it done today. Did 3.08 miles in 20 minutes, I was holding back a little, did not want to over do it. I am back in the competition, 3.25 is still the goal. Hope to hit it soon. Lets hear the the updates you Cardio Nuts!!

Hey Braxton, My treadmill was making a clicking sound when I got on, I thought about you, It made it through, at about 18:30 minutes I cranked it up to 12mph for 30 seconds. It held together. We should hear from Rod today, he said he was going for 3.16 miles. He's trying to .01 up us. :) I think Rod and I should get an age differential. :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Rod has changed his Bod (321 posts) at 01:54 PM:

Hey Cardio Nuts, I tweaked my lower back last week - no idea how! So i haven't done any running until today (I've still managed to get in my cardio on the spin bike). I did a 45 minute spinning class today - my legs are already sore. Probably not the smartest thing the day before a lbwo (duh). It felt really good though! I hovered between Zone 2 and 3 most of the time, but got to Zone 4 (Past AT) at least 3 times, so it was good. It felt great being something different from the treadmill. I did sweat my arse off, too!!! Turkey meatballs are dinging in the oven..later!! Nancy

Thread: Fat Free Potato Chips (126 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by VegasGuy (25 posts) at 01:19 PM: Fat Free Potato Chips
Does anyone have any thoughts on the Lay's Light Potato Chips (formerly WOW! Chips)? Besides of course to stomach problems that Olestra can cause, and the fact that they are a carb and full of salt. I still crave potato chips sometimes, and have taken to eating these as an occassional snack (not on a free day). One serving has zero fat and only about 75 calories (I think it's about 14 chips). Stay Strong! Chris

Body for Life Forum Message by MsJerra (40 posts) at 01:21 PM:
Oh man those are good! But I would save them for your free day due to the amount of carbs and sodium.

Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (48 posts) at 01:27 PM:
VG- You can make your own potato chips at home. Slice potatoes really thin and lay them on a cookie sheet which has been sprayed with PAM, I either spray the potatoes again (either way make sure both sides have been sprayed, sprinkle with salt (and pepper, if you wish) and put in the oven at 450 for 15-20 minutes...maybe flip them once. You might have to experiment with this a few times to get them how you like them, but I swear, the last time I made them, it's was like I was eating something I shouldn't. So, there you have it, your carb to go with any protein. We usually eat them with steak.

Body for Life Forum Message by DDRTeddy (286 posts) at 01:31 PM:
try 50% fat free Pringles! they have like 150 on the sodiom... thats it! I can have these with a meal! 70 calories. none from fat!

Body for Life Forum Message by Casper66 (7 posts) at 01:33 PM:
I love chips too. My sister had a horrible experience with those fat free chips so I am afraid to even try them. I found 2 products that are a great substitution, although they may be hard to find. Some rice crackers/ chips are practically fat free. A few rice crackers and a low fat stick of String cheese makes a Great snack. Then Gen-Soy makes a chip that I was suprised is very good! and they have protein in them! The Gen-Soy Chips are like small flat rice cakes (I hate rice cakes) but they taste great and come in all kinds of flavors. I don't eat them every day but they are a great chip fix.

Body for Life Forum Message by CHRISTREIGNS77 (32 posts) at 01:44 PM:
yeah i remember most fat free chips having something called Olestra in them which made so many people sick that they had to start putting warnings about stomach cramps, diarrhea and such on the label, I think they might have pulled that stuff off the shelves, not sure I would be very wary. I like tortilla chips and salsa. I make my own chips with corn tortillas. I cut up 3 tortillas. Then I spray them with Pam and sprinkle salt on them. I bake for around 6-9 mins at around 375 and they satisfy my love for chips and salsa. Now I just need to make my own salsa. The stuff we have here is either real hot or too bland.

I don't know what is wrong with me. My eating is way out of control. I have gained 7 pounds in 1 week, but that doesn't stop me from shoving more crap down my throat. I can't wake up in the mornings to workout because im too tired. i say im going to work out when i get home, but i usually dont. then, i rush to do the workout before i go to bed. so far, ive kept up the workouts, but im not giving them my all. i just dont know what to do to get me motivated. any suggestions? (last week i wrote that i was having some problems, but this week, its much worse.)

Body for Life Forum Message by marathon2 (369 posts) at 03:18 PM:
Do you just need a big hug? ((((HUGS)))) Hang in there! Can you set a goal to get up just once? Sometimes when I'm feeling too overwhelmed I just have to focus on one day at a time. I bet you'll feel totally different if you get up and get that workout done in the morning! Same thing with your eating. Set a goal to eat clean for just one day and then let us all know how it's going! I feel for you. We've all had those days, but just hang in there and know that we're all rooting for you! DO IT!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Athletic4Life (172 posts) at 03:24 PM:
7 Ppounds in one week, may be more than just eating. Bloating, water retention. . . maybe muscle?

I did not see last weeks post, but it comes down to priorities. If you are so tired, then go to bed earlier. Make your self get up and workout, as you get up early and continue - it does get easier.

If you workouts are lack luster, then you are not really doing any good. I hate to be mean here, but why bother! Get your @$$ out of bed, get some good music and give it 110% effort for a week, no excuses. Then see how you feel, the next week will be eaiser, then you will see progress and you will get stoked and you WONT want to miss a workout.

Eating is probably the most important, if you are eating bad, fohgetaboutit!

Plan your meals ahead of time, get rid of the junk around the house. I make my meals 2 to 3 days ahead of time, while I am at work. I plan my meals (home) a week in advance.

If you don't have a plan, a journal or map to where you want to go you wont get there.

So it is priorities, it is about self control. Don't be weak and give in to the eating.

I also have pics in my bathroom, on my desktop, in my desk drawer, reminders of where I was. I also have pics of role models.

So get a plan, be strong, don't give in and JUST DO IT!!

Hope this helps

I'm right there with you Crackle. I've had it tough around dinner time for about the last 5 days. I have not given up and neither should you. I think Marathon's suggetion of setting the goal to get up once will help get back on track. I never miss a morning because I know it won't get done later in the day. I've also used someones suggestion to fake it until it is real on the intensity. At least going through the motions is better than not going at all. Step away from the crap and step up to something healthy! You can do it.

You know A4L has a point. Most mornings I don't want to get up. I get out of bed by habit now. Once I get going and start working out, I feel much better physically and about myself in general. People laugh at me when I tell them some nights I go to bed at 8pm, but if I'm tired, I don't try to hang, I go to bed. Hang in there, we are here for you. Have you been drinking your water? Are you PMSing?

I know the desperation you are feeling. I've gone through this same thing a number of times, attempting to restart the Challenge #1 I can never seem to finish.

Restarting each time has been more and more difficult, so don't let yourself get to the point where you have to "restart". I have tried everything from putting my shoes on my alarm clock to having my boyfriend kick me out of bed, literally. The best for me was re-reading the book. And, the Body of Work video is a phenominal motivator.

These are the times that truely make you ask yourself why you want this. Unfortunately, only you make up your mind, even when you try to trick yourself. Talk back to yourself when you seem to not be making the right choices. You have it in you, we know you do. Keep telling yourself that. Be your own driil sargent.

You are not losing control, you are being challenged. Now, it is up to you how you respond. My boyfriend always tells me, if it were easy everyone would be doing it. Reach down deep inside and pull yourself up by the bootstraps. Step back and find your focus.

Just know we all want to see you get back on track.

Body for Life Forum Message by Ann (295 posts) at 06:54 PM: Girlie Issue
I've officially stopped getting my period.  It's been three months now.  (Nope, not pregnant.)  I'm in C2W6.  While I'm kinda enjoying not getting my Aunt Flow visits, I'm also hoping that there's nothing wrong with me.  Anyone else experiencing this?  Is it something to worry about?

Body for Life Forum Message by Pixy (68 posts) at 07:11 PM:
It can happen when you work out a lot. It happen to my 2x. Once when I was training 8 miles a day for a road race. The second time was just cuz Dr. not sure hormones ? that was June 2003 till Nov. It was a good summer.

Body for Life Forum Message by Slacker in Hawaii (20 posts) at 07:38 PM:
Ann, you lucky thing! I wish that would happen to me. I have endometriosis so I am usually doubled over every month in serious pain. The absence of your Aunt Flow is probably normal assuming that you don't have other medical issues. My trainer told me that when you work out and get down to a certain amount of bf then a lot of women especially female athletes will experience less frequent periods or none at all. From my own experience, when I was in boot camp I had less periods and so did many of the other females in my company. I hope that helps.

Body for Life Forum Message by Ann (295 posts) at 07:57 PM:
At what BF% does it usually happen? www.mybodycomp.com has me at 21.5%. I've heard others say that that website's numbers are a bit high. ...hmm, maybe I'm less than I thought. Probably just all the hard work though. I think I'll get a physical appointment just to be sure. Especially since my husband and I would like to start 'trying' in a few months.

Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (340 posts) at 08:36 PM:
usually ammenohrea happens with lower bodyfat - under 15%. However, if you are training hard, it can happen at higher rates. this is frequently the case with elite high school and college athletes. when i was in high school and doing double day practices for basketball and/or volleyball, mine would take a break sometimes for months. There is some concern about prolonged periods of the absence of menses - due to lack of hormonal balance. There have been connections with osteoporosis and some other issues, but that's PROLONGED lack of menstruation....

Body for Life Forum Message by GET*HER*DONE (1323 posts) at 10:36 PM:
Yes your BF is lower then what mybodycomp calultes. you are probably about 17%BF if you are lifting heavy and often that will do it with the low BF% Ask your Dr. I don't know if it hurts anything or not

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (791 posts) at 07:00 PM: Anyone doing this once the reach goal weight?
I forgot to mention this in my other post about finally being able to ride my Rocketwing racing bike... After I reach my goal weight of 170 lbs, I'm going to have a professional photographer take my after photos but also a picture of me with that bike. Then I'm going to create a framed 8 X 10 that shows my before and after BFL pictures and stats on one side and a larger picture of me with my bike. I will then send one to all of my doctors, family and friends who stood by me all these years of being sick... Each one will have a paragraph thanking them for being there for me and briefly describing my journey. The text will be customized for each person. My goal is not only to show each person my gratitude but also inspire them or others who see this hanging on their wall to hang in there when the chips are down and to never stop dreaming... Anyone else planning on doing something like this? I'm curious what ways you guys plan to show your 'cheerleaders' your gratitude. Jim

PREGNANT! I guess I am not as good of a counter as I thought I was ! LOL So this really complicates things because I leave for India tomorrw. Got to take some gnarly pills so I don't die of malaria. Sheesh! So I guess in 8 months I am going to have to change my name. So meanwhile, i must survive a week in India, then figure out how to best adapt BFL for pregnancy. I know some people were asking about BFL amd pregnancy, so now I will hopefully be able to tell you how it all works!

Congratulations! I'd check with your doctor about the pills before you take them. I've lived in countries with lots of malaria for years and haven't taken the pills because I would do more harm than good. Besides, if you happen to get malaria (very rare), they treat it with the same medication. Worth a phone call for sure! By the way, I just got back from India a month ago and LOVED it!!! (Yes, I got sick of course) but it was a great experience and awesome shopping too! Have a blast! Bring some hand sanitizer with you since it's often hard to wash your hand with soap there.

Some of those stores with their lights, mirrors, small room where you're plastered up to the mirror........I've even said to the sales girls, "if it wasn't for your dressing room, I may have bought this". Plus, all you want to be able to see is what you really look like and you can't return swimwear so no sale. And really, I've looked at myself in every mirror in the house in all kinds of light and some of those changerooms put some kind of gray cellulite on me that never ever was there before!!!!!!!!! Thread: The "Twins" Volume 3 ... (62 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Jeanie101 (450 posts) at 08:57 PM: The "Twins" Volume 3 ...
Yesterday I got a call from my son’s school, one of the noon supervisors was sick and they needed someone to cover. O.K., no big deal ... except for the laundry. My husband works for Michelin, and his work clothes all have a weird rubbery smell, so I wash them separately. My sons have apparently decided that if I wash my clothes with theirs, they’ll catch “girl cooties”, so theirs get washed separately. Which means that Mom’s laundry gets done “whenever” (which hadn’t happened yet) and I only had 20 minutes notice. So I grab my “big” pants and a t-shirt - BUT - the only bra in my drawer is the one from the “Walmart” incident! O.K. ... I decide that a broken underwire can’t be that bad, I just pull the pieces out and voila, a perfectly serviceable “underwire-on-only-one-side” bra. So, after noon hour, I stop in the library to pick up my purse and notice the piece of string that has been hanging from the ceiling since we took down the Christmas decorations. This piece of string has been annoying the crap out of me, but I’m usually too busy to bother with it. Well, no time like the present, right? Now, bear in mind that I’m only a sneeze over 5 feet, so even on the desk, it’s a stretch for me. And, naturally, the string has decided that it is perfectly happy where it is, and has no intention of coming down! So, I’m wiggling away when who should come in but the janitor, Tony. He comes around the desk to ask if I need help and bursts out laughing! O.K., I admit, I look pretty stupid, but I didn’t think I looked funny! He turns away and composes himself, but as soon as he turns back, he practically ruptures himself laughing, and has to leave the room. Now, I KNOW there is something going on, and I do notice I feel rather funny. So I glance down ... ... lo and behold, the “girl” without the underwire has discovered that when my hands are over my head, she can slip out UNDER the bra!!! O.K. ... mental picture ... 40 years old, 2 kids ... trust me, there is a MAJOR difference between “in the bra” and “out of the bra”!!! I zip off to the bathroom with my face burning and look in the mirror. Honestly, even as embarrassed as I was, I couldn’t help laughing!! Not only was the right side almost a full “boob” length below the left, but you could clearly see the abandoned cup above, looking totally deflated!! Had a nice little fire in the furnace this morning ... guess what I used for kindling!!

Hi all! Just wanted to let you know about a wonderful site I came across today: nutritiondata.com. It is a massive food database - where you can check calories, protein grams, carbs, etc. and you can modify it by serving size. I think its awesome. Another neat feature: it shows you where the food fits on the food pyramid. Enjoy! Just another tool to add to our fitness toolbox! =)

I just started BFL for the fourth time!! I've tried to be a perfectionist (110%) in the past, and when I made a mistake, I would fall off the wagon and derail. I just found this BFL Tracker site a couple of days ago, and I am stoked to be in the presence of people that are in the process of achieving great goals. If anybody has any words of wisdom or encouragement for me, I would love to read it. I am in the process of putting my pictures and measurements up asap. From what I have read, you people are awesome. As Bill Phillips says, "Whatever the mind believes, the body achieves." What do BFL's do for your cardio with the intervals?

The best advice I can offer from experience is to focus on one day at a time, setting yourself up for little "wins" throughout the day. If breakfast was healthy, that's a victory, if I did my cardio, that's a victory. if I walk by the twinkies without buying them,..... you get the idea.I just completed my 1st BFL after starting 35 times since 1997. Beleive me, YOU CAN DO IT! You just have to KNOW you can!

Body for Life Forum Message by kewlmum5 (74 posts) at 10:07 PM: I QUIT.........................................BUT
OK, I quit challenge one. I just was not feeling it any more fo rthe last 2 weeks. I went through the motions half-heartedly. I did half arsed workouts, ate somewhat healthy foods, but not BFL totally. When I did challenge 1 I did not have a journal or anything. I decided to get the journal to help me along. Once I read it, I decided I wanted to start over and do th journal from day 1, week 1, not 3/4 of the way through. Then over last weekend my husband said he wanted to give it a try (he def. use some help with weight). so that was what made my final decision to start over and do it with him for support. I am totally feeling renewed and my mind is in it. Today was day 3, I ate 100% clean, BFL style, and did all my workouts so far intensely. I am enjoying it now fixing the meals for the next day now that I am also fixing them for hubby and I have someone doing this with me. So here I come, full steam ahead.

Body for Life Forum Message by Dean (3 posts) at 10:17 PM: I MET BOOTY BABE!
I know I embarrased her this morning, but I thought I saw her, wasn't too sure so I approached her and she was on the SMITH machine doing lunges/squats.... OMG, I had to catch her between sets because that girl does not take a BREAK! and I got her right after she completed a full set of 90lb inner thigh squats.. I thought my groin was going to fall off.. OUCH! But she was so COOL and FUNNY, she had me busting my gut laughing.... Well I thought I would share that I actually met her and she is all that and then some! lol

Thread: Question about weeks (30 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by toni220 (110 posts) at 10:33 PM: Question about weeks
When should we really see weight loss? just wondering? I am in week 2 just wanted to know what to expect.

Body for Life Forum Message by fitmaggie (30 posts) at 10:37 PM:
At end of week two I had lost 2 pounds. Started week 4 with no othe change in weight at end of week 3. Have lost inches and clothes fit a bit looser. I must add that my eating and workouts have not been perfect, but I am watching portions.

Body for Life Forum Message by GET*HER*DONE (1323 posts) at 10:37 PM:
week 6 you will see the difference along with the scale and the inches, it all starts to show in week 6

I guess it is different for everyone, but I think that the pace speeds up in the 2nd 6 weeks as opposed to the first. Kerry AKA: Nancy Jane's Husband.

Thread: HIIT Question: What's more important....... (9 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by JanisMomto2 (29 posts) at 11:46 PM: HIIT Question: What's more important.......
Increasing your level "6" or your level "10"? I am just thinking that if I increase my level 6 I may tire out faster and not be able to do my usual 10 if you kwim. Right now I am (on the treadmill) starting at 5.0mph, then 5.5, 6.0, 6.7, 7.4 and do that the 4 times and on the last cycle hit it up to 8.5 for my 10 and believe me that is a 10 for me! Any input or advice? Thanks ALOT!!! Janis

I bet if you increased each one by 1/10th You would be fine. your body can really handle more than the limit your mind sets.

I say increase each one by at least 1/10th once a week.

Just my humble opinion, Your BFL buddy, Rod

Thread: Continuous hunger (340 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (511 posts) at 01:30 PM:
I eat and eat and eat and am almost always hungry this is a good problem to have because it means that are metabolic rate is high. In fact, people are amazed and sometimes appauled at the amount of food I can eat. The only way to truly know is to take the metabolic test machine (I dont know what it is called) to measure the calories you need to lose weight, gain weight or maintain. For me to gain weight it is over 4000 calories per day and that is a lot of food

Body for Life Forum Message by CHRISTREIGNS77 (32 posts) at 04:59 PM:
wow! How in the world do you have a metabolism that fast! I think before BFL I ate on average 2,500 a day and managed to put on 60 extra pounds! Have you always followed BFL? I saw your pics, I know you were thin before so maybe you have always had a pretty high metabolic rate?
