Thread: What is cutting and when should I do it? (94 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by stepmorjo (20 posts) at 09:42 AM: What is cutting and when should I do it?
I just posted my 5 week pictures and I can't say I am seeing much change. My weight has stalled as well. I have read some things about cutting recently. I am assuming that helps to get more defined muscles. I am looking to do that now, how is it done? Or do I have to wait until I reach a certain BF? I seemed to have hit a plateu, but am lifting as heavy as I can. Thanks in advance for any help, Stephanie

Body for Life Forum Message by Pixy (68 posts) at 10:04 AM:
You look good you and you have 6 more weeks I would not worry. Week 6 is to early for cutting you should focus on fat burn your hiit add 25 moderate after 20 min. as long as it does not affect your 10s with your upper and lower workout. You can go to www.bodybuilding.com they have lots of question answers even some based on BFL. Good luck Mari

Body for Life Forum Message by curvature (6 posts) at 10:06 AM:
Cutting is basically trying to lower your bodyfat without losing any muscle. Bodybuilders or people who lift weights a lot will talk about "cutting" and "bulking". I've heard them say you can't lose fat and build muscle (bulk) at the same time, but I think the BFL program is pretty much proof that you can. To cut, you need a calorie deficit, work out, and lose body fat. To bulk (like a weight lifter does, I guess), you eat more calories than you need to build muscle, but you also gain fat. From most of the things I've read, a lot of people start with something like BFL. From there, they may decide to do a cut cycle, then a bulk cycle to build up muscle, then cut again to whatever BF% they want to define their muscles. I think I'm rambling now. Anyway, that's just info I've picked up, I'm sure I'm missing stuff there. Also, I think your pics look great. I can see some definite changes there. Congrats :)

I know it is entirely possible to attain that goal since some of you ladies have already done it and you all look fabulous by the way!! Anyway, any help, comments, etc would be much appreciated. My workouts are by the book although I do 25 minutes of steady state cardio after my 20min. HIIT 3x a week. Here's what I typically eat: M1: 1 egg, 2 egg whites, 1/3c. oatmeal w/apple cooked in. You might want to get some feedback on the type of body fat analysis you are using. I spoke with a trainer at my gym when I used the handheld device that sends a current through your body to measure body fat (similar to the scales that measure it). she told me that there is a considerable margin of error when using these. Not sure what you used but try some different methods if possible and see how the results come out.

Someone poste dan article all about creatine that was very informative. The one thing i didn;t get a clear answer on is whether one can take creatine while trying to lose weight and fat. Basically i want to know if anyone has used this while dropping weight and fat and whether or not it hindered or helped the process

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1721 posts) at 02:06 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1721 posts) at 03:18 PM: BFL for Women....got a bad rap???
OK I have read a bit from BFL for Women and I just wanted to give my review so far...... I like it. Now it's not Bill Phillips and I like her explanations for things and explaining WHY we need to be healthy. So far I am liking it. Now of course the Original BFL is great and I would always recommend reading Bill Phillips BFL before starting and then reading BFL for women after. Because Bill's book really puts it out there. BFL W seems to be very informative medically and reasonably. So, I just wanted to add my 2 cents on this subject. Cause, I saw all the people commenting on it. I mean it is a hard to follow in the HUGE steps Bill Phillip's has made but it is pretty good. I think it is a good read so far. But of course the original nothing beats Mr. Phillips! Ok done.... let me read some more and then make some more conclusions ... LOL. Teresa

Body for Life Forum Message by biffler (36 posts) at 03:35 PM:
I too liked the deeper look into the medical aspects of things and liked that she put soy/vege products on the menu. My biggest disappointment was no free day :(. Peeke suggests "mini chills" instead but for me, I'd wouldn't be able to live without a free day! Overall, not a disappointment but in following the original, not too exciting either.

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1721 posts) at 04:08 PM:
Yeah the original had me glued from beginning to end this one I get easily distracted and find myself wanting to skim. Like leisurely reading. Original BFL still lights my fire actually it sets a blaze inside me every-time I read it! This one does not have that kick in the A$$ factor and it does not keep you glued, inspired, and ready to go as the Original did. And THAT is an IMPORTANT factor to this program. T

Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (48 posts) at 06:39 PM: Eating Schedule
Here is the schedule that I try for: Breakfast 10am (wake up at 7, work out at 8, wait one hour and then eat) Snack 12 Noon Lunch 2pm Snack 4pm Dinner 6pm Snack 8pm Sometimes I don't eat dinner until 7pm and then my snack is at 9 and I go to bed at 10:30. Should I have my snack at 8pm anyway? Should I wait until 9pm or is that too late. I know some people say not to eat too late. I love having a shake after dinner, I look forward to it every night and would hate to give it up. I am losing weight and I have been snacking late like 8:30-9. Do you think this will be a problem in the future? Your thoughts are appreciated.

Body for Life Forum Message by Casper66 (7 posts) at 02:35 PM:
I've done alot of research on dairy because I have a problem digesting it. I only allow myself small amounts of dairy. But in my research I found tons of interesting info. The one that sticks in my mind the most is the milk ads. Remember the milk ads that said "Milk does a body good"? You don't see those any more right? It's because it dosen't. Milk is no longer allowed to say it builds stong bones and does a body good, because it dosen't. (false advertising) I think it's best not to rely on milk for your main source of calcuim.

Body for Life Forum Message by NaturalPhysiques (100 posts) at 04:06 PM:
Using milk for calcium is like trying to fill a bucket with a hole in the bottom. Milk requires a strong pH in the stomach to break down and digest, which then requires calcium. In other words, dairy while advertising how they provide calcium actually leeches calcium, i.e. increases the demand. In fact, you can go to PubMed (online research site) and find examples where they compared vegans with dairy eaters and found the vegans, even though they only received half the calcium in their diet, actually had the same calcium status (i.e. bone integrity, etc) as the dairy groups. Leafy green vegetables, nuts, legumes, etc are all great sources. What you learned about calcium as a supplement is also why so many uneducated people fall for the cheap one-a-day vitamins (Centrum, etc). They are just looking at the RDA (which isn't even the optimal amount, that's just the minimum amount for survival) and not the quality. For example, calcium requires cofactors like magnesium and Vitamin D to function optimally. Selenium is more bioavailable in the (more expensive) organic form. Most minerals are more readily ingested in chelated (combined with an amino acid) form. This is why I always encourage people to invest a little more in a pharmaceutical grade multivitamin. Pharmaceutical grade means the cost will be higher because they invest in strict testing standards to ensure the quality. Because of this, they also make sure the ingredients are premium and are the ones the body uses the best. In fact, they also look at interactions between vitamins (i.e. Vitamin C increases absorption of iron while other vitamins decrease, etc) and balance them accordingly. Yes, when you have a multibillion dollar industry, much of your "health advice" may actually be advertising and marketing. Jeremy

Body for Life Forum Message by CHRISTREIGNS77 (32 posts) at 04:56 PM:
AWESOME! You don't know how many times I tell people dairy doesn't cut it for calcium and no one believes me, thinks I'm crazy..same thing about the vitamins, man! people think they can buy some cheap crap and think they are actually getting something from it, it's dead man, no bioavailability, nothin'1 zip! nada! spend some money on something that works! shaklee, nutrilite, and learn to like fruits and vegetables, (preferably organic so at least you're not ingesting quite so many pesticides, waxes, and other gunk) THAT is where the vitamins are at, in my opinion.

OK guys, I have made them....They looked really good and smelled really good to when they were baking, and the first one or two wasn't too bad. They reccomend you freeze them and then just pull them out and nuk 'em, but that didn't go so well. They got kind of slimy and heavy. I really could not eat more than 2 and I'm not that picky. I also had to go buy all this wheat germ, oat four, wheat flour, and other extra stuff that I don't know what do do with now. I have thought about trying it again and putting WAY more spice into them and seeing if thats any beter. If anyone tried it let us know how they turn out.

I agree with Jamber...they were a bit heavy, and did not freeze well at all. Might try the brownies next.

I have made them twice, too. They smell awesome when you are baking them...but I was also disappointed in the texture and taste. It was like it just had to have some type of spread on it...but, of course I didn't put any on. I could take 2 or 3 of them, but that was enough, I was done. No one else in my family would eat them. I wonder if we put some dried cranberries or raisins in them if it would help the taste and moisture - but then it would probably be too carb heavy. They smelled soooo good, too. darn.

i agree with northern belle on most of her post. cous cous is actually a pasta and i do eat it on occasion, b/c it is so convenient. they make a whole wheat variety, which would be a better option. save the coconut curry for free day. most curries have quite a bit of oil and coconut milk is high in fat, even the lowfat stuff can be kind of high in fat.you can make healthy versions of alot of pan asian foods. unfortunately, in a lot of restuarants they add lots of oil.

Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (988 posts) at 06:04 AM:
There is at least one recipe in the EFL book for cous cous. Low fat ricotta is in several things, too. I was able to find fat free ricotta and one grocery store around here, and eat a lot of it. It's almost pure whey protein (as opposed to cottage cheese which is cassein). Ginger and garlic are your friends! They add flavor without excessive sodium or calories. Go for the low sodium broths. You're best saving stirfry from a restaurant for free day, because you don't know much fat they've cooked it in. Of course if you make your own only spraying the pan with just enough cooking spray, you're just fine.

Right. A lot of fat free stuff has lots of sugar or gluey substance to take it's place. Fat free dressing is nasty. However I do like fat free cottage cheese (which I only use in recipes so don't miss the fat) fat free ricotta, skim milk, and fat free yogurt, none of which have additives to take the place of the missing fat. I also like the Edy's fat free/sugar free ice cream. Yeah, there's goo in it, but it still tastes good.

Sugar alcohols are simply "fillers" used in a lot of "low-carb" food products because they have a moderate effect on blood sugar. But they don't contribute much in the way of nutrition. In fact, some research shows they may cause stomach upset if eaten in excess.

I am making Fajitas for guests this Saturday. Normally I only make Chicken, but I thought I'd throw in some beef too. I have made them before with skirt steak, with not too much success, I always overcook and they come out like jerky. Anyhow, Skirt Steak is just too fatty for me right now and I need to go with a much leaner cut of meat but want it to come out really tender. Filet is too expensive and I wouldn't want to waste it on fajitas. Maybe Strip Steak or London Broil?? What would you suggest? Thanks!!

Body for Life Forum Message by strongby35 (394 posts) at 10:29 AM: A question for all you runners out there...
I just finished my first challenge and did my workouts just as described in BFL. Weight-training 3x a week, and HIIT 3x a week. I ran outside for my HIITs and loved it. For my next fitness goal, I want to train for and run in a 10k. But I also want to keep going with BFL. How do you think I should go about it? One idea I had was to follow the http://www.halhigdon.com/ intermediate 10k training program, but a 20 minute HIIT once a week as my speed training. I'd still do the BFL weight training. What do you think? Also, do you think it's still okay to lift to failure on my LBWO days? With all the running I'm going to be doing I don't want to overtire my legs. Thanks if advance for any input you can give me! :o) -Renee

Body for Life Forum Message by jennilahart (3 posts) at 12:28 PM:
Though I am new to BFL, running is my expertise. :) This answer should address both of your central questions. With regards to doing a 10K training workout and sprinting on the HIIT days I caution you to be very careful with yourself. The problem with sprinting on those days is that you will have a distance run on lifting days. This will be very difficult during the weeks when you have two LBWOs. However, be not discouraged. Challenges is what we are about right? SO: hit your tens and do your sprinting workouts on your HIIT days but lag your distance days--dare I say I say it?--to your free days as much as possible to avoid injury from lifting. If you are feeling any pain aside from being sore you should immediately try to pinpoint the area. Commonly shins are a problem--if so, run on the grass for distance and sprint heel to toe for a while. If your knees begin to hurt take it very slow because you do not want to pull your IT bands. They are a muscle supported by your thighs and glutes which take a big beating during LBWO. I am excited that you want to run a 10K. Running is very rewarding! Have fun with it and remember to be very aware of yourself while training with both schedules. Have a wonderful day strongby!

I don't know what I did to cause that. ugg. Anyway, I would suggest folling the 10K training program. I trained for the Chicago Marathon a few years ago and it was very intense. Those people know what they are doing. It will be fun and good for your body to mix it up a bit. The last thing you want to do is overtrain or injury yourself by trying to do both programs at the same time. Good luck and enjoy!

Today at my new gym I was shocked to actually see a 6-pack (abs..not soda! hehe) that I wouldnt wanna have as my own. This woman was very thin (no more than MAYBE 110lbs)...had a very definite 6 pack but they were HUGE. (Very thick, "puffed-out" and in MY opinion not very sexy or attractive. I KNOW I am NO WHERE near gettin my own 6 pack to show...but after seein hers-I wanna know what NOT to do so I dont get big thick abs like that. Does that happen from the WAY you train your abs? I was checkin out her form and was surprised to see that she completely arched her back on every set she did-no matter what the ab ex. was. And she only did abs the whole time I was there(almost an hour). Anyone got any info for me? Thanks! Hugs....

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1721 posts) at 12:32 PM:
If you do abs and hold air in and do not exhale it can make the abdomen protrude outward. Thats why it is important to always exhale on the way up. Of course I did not see the woman she could have just been extremely muscular. But that was one explanation I could come up with. T

Body for Life Forum Message by Dana D (10 posts) at 12:35 PM:
Thnx T-N-T..thats probably what she did. Even though her abs were big and cut..the rest of her body had no visible muscle defintion so I was kinda confused. Thanks again!

I also do squats, lunges, deadlifts, stepups. There are a few different versions of squats and lunges, so I switch them up every 4 weeks. I love working out at home. It saves a lot of time. The nearest gym to me is a 20 minute drive.

This works for me b'cause my kids are home sleeping at 5am, and don't feel comfy leaving them there alone. I do my cardio outside while the weather is nice. I have a set of weights that I got for about $200 at Sam's Club a few years ago and a treadmill (gift from a boyfriend who was afraid I was going to get fat :)). Bill says that the exercises in the BFL book are the best and all can be done at home with free weights. Keep your eyes on the newspaper(classified ads and garage sales) becuase people are always selling exercise equipment (90% of home exercise equipment goes unused). Don't let this set you back. If there is a will there's a way. Good luck.

I have a full set of weights, an incline bench, a step and a ball. For those who are saying about home LBWO's being touch, the step really helps in chanigng up lunges and squats. I mostly do my workouts at lunchtime in the gym b/c I have 5 kids at home and at the gym I can have peace. I cannot begin to think of the number of lunges I've done in hope of thinning my thighs and butt!  I was to the point of not getting the least big sore anymore until I started switching them up a bit.  Here's what I've been doing lately and it seems to be working. I pretty damn sore again, that's for sure! (I'll know the truth when I take photos this week.)

Stationary Lunges on a Step (front): Put your front leg on a step with your back leg stretched far behind you. Use dumbbells.  I use 20-25-30-35 and then back to 20s.

Stationary Lunges on a Step (back): Put your back leg on a step with your front leg stretched out in front of you. Use dumbbells.  I use 20-25-30-35 and then back to 20s.

Walking Lunges:  I strap on ankle weights and hold 15s while I do them.  I shoot for a total of 60 w/o stopping.

Ahh, how I dread them....But they hurt so good!

Thread: Is HIIT REALLY the SHIIT? (213 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (656 posts) at 07:52 AM:
I've got to agree with many folks who have already posted. I was a cardio junkie (meaning, the more cardio and the longer, the better) for years. I made initial progress, but stalled. And what I think I really did was burn muscle, which is taking me forever to regain. Not a good situation. I think adding on an extra moderate cardio session per week is fine...you can burn some extra calories (during the session, only though) and it is kind of cathartic for me, anyways to glide through a moderate session and work up a nice little sweat. However, I think the intensity is the whole idea behind Training for Life. As you push your AT higher...when you train above it...you are actually widening that window of fat burning zone. You are burning more calories for a period of time after your workout and as you raise your metabolism you burn more calories at rest. Do I love it??? Once I am done with it, I love it, but when I first start it I have to admit that I am dreading it, too. I know I am gonna be very uncomfortable when I am really pushing and that part is not really something I look forward to. BUT, when I am done and I make progress and set personal goals for myself in improving every time - it keeps me coming back for more! And I have to agree that the shorter cardio time is a big benefit for me, too! About sweating - when I finish my face is red as a beet, my clothes are soaked, sweat dripping down my chest and back, hair just soaked at the roots! Give it another try. Maybe just start with one hiit per week and really push your limits. You might find a whole new respect for it (and your body might, too!!) Nancy :-)

Thread: Costs (319 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by pancyprus (4 posts) at 10:56 AM:
It saddens me to hear about the "cost" issue. Since i live in Cyprus i have to order my eas supplements via the net, the cheapest and best delivery to date is bodybuilding.com, but by the time i pay for them to be fed exed to Cyprus and then our customs in cyprus tax me on them (since its a non eu import) the cost rises to three times the amount people in the usa pay, but that does not bother me because they are worth every penny. Thank u eas for the wonderful supplements, thank you guys for posting inspiring posts. God Bless pan

Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (488 posts) at 11:03 AM:
Thanks for the post Kevin. I also tallied up what I spent in C1. This included several supplement orders at dpsnutrition.com, bfl videos, callipers, bodyfat tests, EFL book, success journal, and BFL book. I spent $498 total. And I still have and use these items today. I also think it was money well spent. Danielle

Body for Life Forum Message by Lovey75 (286 posts) at 11:07 AM:
When I first started I thought this is going to cost me a lot. In my first challenge I spent $293.03 on supplements, shakes and bars (according to my spreadsheet). I did have a whole box of bars and a box of 48 shakes left over to use for challenge 2. So I could take of about $70 from that to give me about $220 for C1. I did do a little more spending than that, I splurged on a new $100 blender and a new $20 back pack. I deserved it!

Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (340 posts) at 11:53 AM:
Lets talk money here, shall we?: The average American gains somewhere in the nature of 10lbs per year. 15lbs = 1 clothing size (approximately). 1 clothing size every other year x 7 pairs of pants and 7 shirts (this is unrealistically low, but lets just go with the low end) x $40 for a pair of pants and $25 for a shirt = $455 every other year. Oh yeah, and underwear - chalk up another $100 for that. $555 every other year. Oh, and fast food - say maybe twice a week at $10 a pop. I think that's conservative, but then I've not really been a big fast food eater. But lets just say - $20 per week x 52 weeks = $1040.00 a year!!! DIABETES - The average diabetic also suffers from related disorders such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, etc. MONTHLY estimated cost of the 4-5 drugs which they typically have to take to control diabetes and other disorders - between $115-170 in 2000. I'd hate to see what it would cost now in 2005. HEART ATTACK - Average total cost per hospital admission for acute myocardial infarction was $5,898 in 1998–99. This is IF there was no surgery involved. There are a TON of other things I could add to this, but lets just total this up over a 20 year period: $555 every 2 years over 20 years = $5550. $1040.00 per year on fast food x 20 = $20,800.00!! If, after 15 years of "letting go", you got diabetes, tack on $9,000.00 (12 months x $150/month x 5 years). If you STILL didn't listen to your doctors and ended up having a heart attack at the end of the 20 years, tack another $6,000 So... the total you potentially saved yourself (AND THIS IS CONSERVATIVE): $41,350.00!!!!!!! I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a Lexus and be thin. (Or invest that $$ and retire a little earlier, enjoying my lean, strong, toned 55-year-old-looking-35 body!!)

Body for Life Forum Message by CHRISTREIGNS77 (32 posts) at 12:00 PM:
excellent rachelle! I thought about posting something similar when I read this thread yesterday, but you beat me to it! When people talk about how much money you have to spend on a program, they are 1) assuming it won't work and you have wasted your money cuz diets don't work and they assume it is a diet and 2) are too lazy to bother thinking about all the money they spend on @$*& that is gonna kill them!

Body for Life Forum Message by rawillow (340 posts) at 12:37 PM:
Yeah - it amazes me... "I can't afford $2 for a BFL bar" (you can find them cheaper) or "those shakes cost so much $$!" Really, how much does it cost YOU to eat lunch out? I was spending $6-7 a day on it if I didn't bring mine. Buying the contents for my lunch was STILL more than $2 or $3... Of course, BFL is going to cost me a pretty penny in the new wardrobe I have to buy very soon. Thank god I work from home so much - I am getting away with exactly 3 work outfits right now... I'm too cheap to buy any more, as they won't fit in a month or so...

Money is just a way of saying that there is some other excuse (most of the time) If you drink protein shakes it is actually an inexpensive part compared to fast food. A jug of protein can make 30 meals or more. That is about $1 per meal.

Body for Life Forum Message by Casper66 (7 posts) at 01:16 PM:
OOps, forgot to write in the box. LOL! This is my first post here. I am a penny picher and an accountant. So I know it costs nothing to be on the BFL plan. BFL SAVES me money. It is a cheaper lifestyle even if you take out the medical savings. Eating whole foods is cheaper than fast food and processed foods. I mostly use the Myoplex Original shakes that you mix with water. I drink at least 1 per day as one of my meals. Sometimes 2 if I didn't have time to bring something else. I order online and they only cost about 1.00 each! (Fit RX) I used to eat fast food or hit the taco wagon a few times a week. With eliminating my morning Mocha and bagel then my fast food lunch I am saving at least 30-40 bucks per week! Even with my gym membership my monthy expenses are lower since I Started BFL.

I am going to post what I spend on supplements, just because I'm so lucky to live where I live. Once a month EAS headquarters has a sale, that you can get the cheapest supplements around 10 boxes of advant edge bars (120 bars) = $45.00 4 tubs of Phosphagen HP = $18 2 tubs of Cytovol = $17 2 bottles of CLA (420 tablets) = $16 5 bottles of Beta Cut(450 tablets)= $5 2 tubs of Synthevol = $17 4 boxes of Myoplex (80 servings) = $18 Grand Total = $136. I am sure I will have some left over as well....

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (791 posts) at 11:56 AM:
Lovey -- One thing that is a big motivation is the idea of sharing a toast with my friends at the end of C3 and saying "The last time I had a drink I was over 300lbs, and now I'm 170!!! Cheers!" If I have any drinks prior to reaching my goal, it destroys that vision and opportunity to have such a great party! Man! I don't want to blow that! And the funny thing is, I haven't had the desire to drink anyway! Could it be because my focus has been diverted towards something a lot more exciting and certainly more rewarding?!!! I totally agree intentional. I want people to look at me and say she works out whoa! I am sure you do too you want your efforts to show and you should! You've done such an awesome job MM! I believe that in order to give people the inspiration to get fit and healthy we have to look "intentionally" very fit and healthy. So agreed MM. You go on with your fit, bad, self! T

Thread: A little upset with a friend... (213 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (791 posts) at 01:06 AM:
Thanks guys! Like I've said before, who needs Dr. Phil when I've got you guys?!!! I think a little background is in order... This event tonight is just one of many over the last several years. Not sure it is relevant but it was my wife that her husband ran off with back in 1993. We both went through painful divorces together. He left her and her 2 infant children behind. She never really dealt with the issues involved and I think she blames me in some way... I feel like she stopped investing in the friendship a long time ago. It's as if she tolerates my friendship but doesn't value it. She looks down on my focus on fitness as being 'ungodly', that I'm too obsessed. All through my challenges with illness she has said things implying that I'm too weak and I became her project. It never seemed to occur to her that maybe Jim REALLY was sick, and that it wasn't just all in his head. We had a falling out in 2003 because I got fed up with her and her brother always treating me like a child and constantly telling me how to live my life. She's a negative person and I think she views my optimism as a sign of weakness. I don't think she has ever really grasped just how sick I've been because when I'm around my friends, I always do my best to be cheerful and have fun, even if it means going home later exhausted. I suppose if I moaned and groaned it would have given me some credibility! Anyway, dealing with this friendship is important for me to be successful in BFL. It's just not healthy to have friendships where you invest so much and all you get back is crumbs. I know deep down she cares for me, but at what point do you say that that is not enough? I have had several heart to heart talks with her and the result is always the same. She's upset I'm not taking her advice - which I never ask for!. That she's trying to help me but I just won't listen. Of course I won't listen to her advice when she's trying to get me to be more 'realistic' and drop my 'childish dreams'. She has never supported my fitness or self-improvement efforts. For long-term success in BFL, this relationship has to change for the better or I'll have to distance myself from her. Since we've been like family for so long, I doubt if I'll ever break off the friendship, but frankly sometimes I ask myself 'What friendship?'. BTW -- I brought my Rocketwing over to the bible study calling it 'a rolling praise report!'...The response? "Oh, that's the red bike that's been sitting in your living room...(yawn) I've seen it before." I might as well have been talking to the wall... I'm tellin ya'! I'm looking at some of my friendships here and wonder if I shouldn't just hop on my bike and ride away! Jim (Ok Goddessa! Rocket Man!)

Body for Life Forum Message by ChubbyMcChubbs (610 posts) at 01:41 AM:
I agree with the above responses. Christie took the words straight from my fingertips...misery loves company. It appears that she is dependent on you being dependent upon her....or so she thinks. Since she didn't (nor you) have control over the divorces, she decided to take control of you. I agree with Lisa about taking time to think before speaking/writing her. I would go and enjoy your break in CC. When you come back, re-analyze your situation and decide if it is a friendship that is worth working on. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to cut your losses. Negativity is completely counterproductive, especially with our new and improved BFL lifestyles. Your "friend" is probably very bitter. She needs to let it go. She needs to forgive and release, otherwise, she will be angry and ALONE. Hugs, Melanie

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (791 posts) at 01:48 AM:
My gosh chubby! You've nailed her on the issues related to the divorce! Her hubby has been saying the same thing for a long time. She is absolutely bitter..and angry! And she has never grieved the losses... Actually, I had distanced myself from her for a couple of years but I got sucked back in by the hope that we could be close friends again...silly me! Jim

Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (988 posts) at 05:47 AM:
Distancing yourself a little sounds like a good idea. You don't have to kill the relationship completely, just step back. Remember she has tried in her way, for whatever reasons to help you. Probably the best way she has helped you is with her prayers. Maybe that's the kind of help she needs now, too.

Body for Life Forum Message by cheller (92 posts) at 06:50 AM:
jshelton, I'm new to the board and don't know you well but I feel like i can sya this since you eluded in your post that you stopped by a bible study. I too am a Christian and find that when I am moving forward and doing what I feel is great things Satan can and will throw a speed bump in my path. It sounds like you have had a great number of painful and hurtful things happen in your life over the years. But maybe just maybe there was a conversation like this between God and satan satan: God, jshelton is mine. He can't handle all that I can throw at him. God: Yes, jshelton can handle everything because he believes in me and will surpass all my expectations. satan: prove it then, let me hav him. God: you do anything you want satan because he is mine and will aways be. Do everything you want but do not kill him. okay, I'm sure you know the ending to this little story but if you haven't heard it in awhile go back and read the book of Job. Please believe me when I say that you have every right to be hurt and upset about what your friend has been doing to you. God wants good things in our lives but maybe you are here good thing and she needs you in her life. The old saying really is true. We hurt the ones we love the most. Be bigger than her. Let her know that you were hurt by her outburst but that you have gotten over it and would like to know if she is stuggeling with anything that you might be able to help her with. There is a wonderful book and DVD series about this very issue called The Bait of Satan by John Bevere. It is life changing and will change your prespective on the offences that have occured in you life. Try to find it and read it again and again and again. I hope you don't mind the very long input from someone who doesn't know your complete story but I just felt that I should share this with you.

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (791 posts) at 11:34 AM:
Once again I'm so impressed by you guys! I had a night to sleep on it and I feel I have a pretty good grasp of what it going on... What really upset me was not so much her disrespect for me, but rather her disrespect for our friendship. I rarely get upset but when I see something or someone I value greatly being threatened, it really gets me going. Yes, her comments were rude but I understand her well enough to know that the reasons for her insulting remarks really have nothing to do with me. In a nutshell, she doesn't feel good about herself and she projects that onto her relationships. I'm smart enough to know that you can't get close to such a person unless you are willing to settle for a 'toxic' relationship. I settled for that before BFL...but I no longer will... I believe my success in BFL is a big threat to her self-esteem ("If Jim can lose weight even with a chronic hormonal disorder, then I must be a real loser to not be able to even stick with a diet!"). And yes, I do believe that there is always a spiritual battle going on behind the scenes. Satan wants to drag us down and he'll use whatever he can to attack you and your relationships. So I've decided the best thing for me to do is to step back and make sure I take care of myself. I still value her friendship but I can't do her part...The door will remain open but she is the one who will have to step through it...I hope she does, because I know I could help her a great deal...if only she would let me... Meanwhile...I'm gonna keep on truckin'!!! Jim

Jim, you were going for a Bible study....let her deal with her own demons and keep the faith- you know who loves ya....

Sounds like you've made a decision that is healthy for you and for her. Toxic relationships tend to add to our weight, both in the figurative and literal sense!

Hey, I had a free day yesterday. DH left for Fleet Week, so I had two beers and some chips. Hadn't planned on it being my free day, but that is what happens when I have to have something that I'm craving. Just change your day. I will probably feel better then taking a whole free day anyways. PIck yourself up, have a positive attitude and go take on the day (As Dr. Laura would say)... Connie

I know how you feel, I had 5 bites of my sons birthday cake and was furious with myself. But by the time I went to bed I got over it. I realized that it was my old way of thinking that pulled me down not what I had eaten. I have to keep reminding myself that this is not a diet that it is a life style. I also had to remind myself that it takes 21 days to learn a new "habit" so give yourself some breathing room get refocused and move on. You will do this, You will finish your 12 weeks and You will look and feel 200% better than you ever have.

One day at a time. 3 pieces of pizza, does not a failure make. We have all been there.... "Oh, well, I screwed up, and I will just eat the whole carton of ice cream as well." Today is a new day. Make it a great one. Do a few extra reps in your workout, and you will feel better, it always works for me.

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2521 posts) at 08:14 AM:
You're not a failure in any way. You are human, and you are just starting out. You can't change it, and beating yourself up about it will do nothing but make you feel bad, and this program is supposed to make you feel GOOD. Young Guns said it exactly right: it's the self-destructive thinking that brings us down. This is for LIFE, and 3 slices of pizza and dessert one day in your whole life will not make you fail this program. Get right back up and have a good day today. :)

Body for Life Forum Message by elisa (19 posts) at 08:21 AM:

(And I'm not just saying that because her name's also "Renee"!) She has a great essay about cheating and why it's not the end of the world. Check it out! http://skwigg.com/id28.html Don't let this mess up your whole challenge. It's not that big of a deal. Pick yourself off, dust yourself off, and keep going! Take care, Renee
