anavywife, you look really good for weighing 220 at one time. You do not look as though you have loose skin hanging. You will have a great transformation with your build. Good Luck.

anavywife, you look great. I say this sincerely. Your handles are enhanced visually by your bikini... Any elastic band positioned in that location are going to cause the effect. I have the same thing when I have tension on an elastic band on shorts... If I roll the waistband down a turn or two it looks soo much better.
You transformation is ongoing. In the meantime you might experiment with clothing that suites your tastes. A different design could change your look dramatically (not that your look isn't great right now)..
But again, I think those handles actually look nice!!

creatine seems to have a different response in different people. One of my old lifitng partners experienced horrific migrain headaches while taking it.
Having said that, I agree with Jeremy that creatine itself is probably not the culprit here. I would agree that it is the other ingredients.
Body for Life Forum Message by saint01 (25 posts) at 02:44 PM
Here is my opinion, and keep in mind that it is my opinion.
NO2...I have taken Legal Gear's Cold Fusion twice, and have had great results with it. Here is the shortened version of my log...
(1) First time...took twice per day, in the morning and 30 min prior to workout. Bench went from 315 - 6 reps, to 365 - 6 reps, in about 3 weeks. Squats went from 500 lbs to 590 lbs. Was much more vascular during workouts, but not much difference during non-workout hours. I did have more energy during my workouts though. Overall, was very satisfied with the product.
(2) Second time, only took dosage 30 minutes prior to workout. Saw incline bench go from 120 dumbbells to 130 dumbbells, in 4 - 5 weeks. Noticed that pump in the gym as good, and energy was up, but didn't seem to be as drastic as before. Overall, energy was up a little and the weight being lifted was up a little, but no where near the results that were seen before.
Diet during both phases was the same. On a 6 - 7 meal rotational schedule with only 3-4 carbs per day.
I can't speak to any of the other products other than Syntrax's Nitrous. I am only in my second week of that, but overall not nearly as happy as with Legal Gears' Cold Fusion.
I personally saw strength increases, but apparently this is not the standard. Other than creatine and ephedrine, NO2 is the only other supplment (take that back, Legal Gear Cold Fusion is the only other supplement) that I would recommend (Ephedrine is even kind of shady). If you want a link to one study, take a look at this one...

just my thoughts and my abreviated log.

Body for Life Forum Message by NaturalPhysiques (107 posts) at 10:23 AM
You're very welcome! Unfortunately, I have yet to find any supplement that can fix something that is broken. They serve like the icing on the cake, but don't allow people to lose fat when they aren't already ... it may enhance existing fat loss.
If there is no movement, the key is your exercise and nutrition and mindset. Supplements won't fix it (in some cases, people get a psychological boost - they "believe" a supplement will work, and therefore allow themselves to start losing fat, but in the end, its mindset, exercise, and nutrition).

Body for Life Forum Message by reneakleinisakson (141 posts) at 04:03 PM
The only problem with EAS Myolplex is that they aren't balanced. They are ok for now and then, but I wouldn't count on them as a regular meal source. That is just my opinion and I know a lot of people use them regularly, but I prefer to eat whole food. I have found that Detour makes some bars that are more balanced, but a littel higher in sugar. They taste exactly like a candy bar though. So I guess that's something to consider.
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (76 posts) at 04:26 PM
Exactly what is not balanced with myoplex?
Body for Life Forum Message by cheller (136 posts) at 11:12 PM
my first choice would be eas then bfl. forget about the advantage. i hear it is just like drinking slim fast which really isn't all that good for you. and for me i get filled up on the myoplex lite shakes better than a solid meal as many refer to cooked foods. maybe it's just my imagination.

Hello everyone. This is about everyone's favorite topic...creatine. Im really sorry if this has been asked before but I did a search on it and couldnt find what I wanted to know.
Basically, I see websites saying to take it before workout and then i see some saying to take it after workout. It seems that taking it after my workout would be more helpful but it would be much easier for me to take it before I left for the gym in the morning. I head to work after the gym and I dont really want to look "strange" dosing white powder in my grape juice. lol
So, now to my main question...does it really matter when you take it?
Thanks,Chuck
Body for Life Forum Message by Chris (271 posts) at 05:14 PM
I really does matter, There is creatine for pre-work outs and for post work outs. I am no expert on the subject but I do know there is a difference. It is also best taken on an empty stomach. What type of creatine are you wanting to take.
Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (76 posts) at 05:20 PM
Thanks Chris. I was under the impression that there is only one type of creatine...creatine monohydrate and all the the other liquid forms are bogus. Is this what you were wanting to know?

When I'm really hungry like that I try to eat things that feel more filling. So I'll have oatmeal and two soy breakfast sausages, instead of oatmeal mixed with protein powder. It feels like more food that way. Or I'll have an apple and cottage cheese instead of yogurt and cottage cheese. The apple stays with me longer than the yogurt. I always try to have a big salad with my lunch. That helps fill me up too.
It's tough being hungry. Especially when you are making food for kids all day! I know how you feel. Hang in there!

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2660 posts) at 10:48 AM
I see you have 4oz cheese listed with your chicken -- is that right? That seems like an awful lot of cheese, even as the main source of protein for a midmeal, and you've got it listed in a meal that already includes protein!
Also, the peanut butter, banana, bread and milk meal is very carb heavy. Peanut butter is generally considered a fat, not a good protein source most of the time because of its fat content. In fact, I read a note from someone who works at Bill Phillips' publishing company who says that with peanut butter you should add a protein and a carb to the meal to keep it balanced. As for the rest of the meal, both the banana and the bread count as a carb, and the milk is half a carb and half a protein.
Break down your meals like this: Every meal, including midmeals and your last meal of the day, needs to have a palm-sized portion of lean protein, a fist-sized portion of carbs (fruit or whole grains), and have a double handful of veggies at least 2 meals each day.
Body for Life Forum Message by babysierra (4 posts) at 12:09 PM
WOW! I am totally doing this wrong. I read on the back of the package that 1/4 cup of cheese. (Sorry I put 4 oz.) Well, does the Eating For LIfe book explain to me what a carb is? And I have natural peanut butter and I drain out all the fat. I really need to get that book ( I ordered it online). And it's really hard to understand everything all at once. I knew I was doing something wrong. Does anyone know where I can get some example meals planned or know where there are meals planned. I might just need something like that.
Body for Life Forum Message by Hoping for a lot (107 posts) at 12:23 PM
It can get overwhelming if you let it. Just take it meal by meal. I remember my first week. I thought I was going to cry from all the decisions. Once you figure out what is a carb, protein and fat you'll be on your way. The book should explain it all. This is what I had yesterday:
#1 - 5 egg whites, 1 slice toast with surgarless jam, half a cup milk.
#2 - Apple, 2 string cheeses.
#3 - Turkey sandwich on ww bread, lettuce, mustard and a slice of cheese.
#4 - 2 oz sliced turkey, grapes.
#5 - Chicken breast, rice, veggie.
#6 - Soy nuts (a little high in fat, but even carbs and proteins).
Good luck.

Go to bodyforlife.com
The food and nutrition area has the plan spelled out, authorized foods and if they are protein, carb, or "good" fats. They give a sample meal plan which is an OK start. Don't fret the missunderstanding - you'll get it!!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2660 posts) at 12:45 PM
Be careful with the meal stuff at bodyforlife.com, because it's not quite right. There are some sample meals from the book at http://eatingforlife.com/recipes/ that should give you a pretty good idea, and then once you have the book, it explains everything really well.
And like the others said, don't worry, you WILL get it!

Is sparkling mineral water just as good as regular water in terms of benefits? The sparkling stuff I am drinking is Gerolsteiner, a naturally carbonated mineral water from the source in Germany. No carbonation is artificially added; there is no sugar or anything else added either. There is a little bit of naturally occurring sodium in the water -- I believe 30 mgs per serving (though I don't have the bottle in front of me.)
I am only on Day 3 of my challenge. So far I drink regular water most of the day at work (at least 1 liter) but at home I find I am more likely to drink water if it is the naturally carbonated mineral stuff.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2660 posts) at 01:20 PM
Just a guess, but I think it's fine.
Body for Life Forum Message by Margroovy (80 posts) at 01:53 PM
I'm not aware of any naturally occuring 'sparkling/carbonated' water. But neither have I researched it's actual existence so I can't speak to the validity of the products claims. I would be leery of such a claim and would research it myself if I were considering drinking it. All that being said, carbonation is a no no for people who are working out in either cardiovasular and/or strength training. It inhibits oxygen transport to the muscles, which is totally contrary to what we are trying to achieve with BFL.
I dated a swimmer when I was in college and the University swim coach made all the members of the swim team sign a contract that they would not drink ANY carbonated beverages during the season.
Apparently he thought it harmful enough to insist that all his swimmers avoid it all together.
I suggest doing an internet search on the product and see what you come up with. It would be a shame to work so hard in the gym only to be getting partial benefit because of a carbonated beverage.
Body for Life Forum Message by CharlieOhio (57 posts) at 01:55 PM
At work I spike my wather with lemon juice (from concentrate) in my water. That gives it flavor and it is healthy...
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2660 posts) at 02:00 PM
Margroovy, that's really interesting information! I had no idea we needed to avoid carbonation. Bill Phillips does say a soda a day is ok if you follow it up with an equal amount of water over and above your usual water, so I would think the one would be ok, but that's a personal call.
Body for Life Forum Message by Somerville444 (2 posts) at 03:22 PM
Thanks for your replies. I did a quick google search and see some conflicting information. But I see enough that suggest that there are some downsides to carbonation (and I am not sure whether they are talking about natural carbonation or man-made). The downsides appear to be bloating, disturbance of digestive tract and even depletion of calcium from the bones.
There *is* such a thing as natural carbonation. Here is a quote : "Natural sparkling water" is spring water that contains natural carbon dioxide, but tonic, seltzer and soda water are not classified as bottled water at all since their carbonated fizz is manmade, not natural."
but just because it is natural doesn't mean it's necessarily good for you, I guess.

I found this atkins low carb bake mix. Here's the ingredients and content info. They boast you can use it instead of flour to make bread and muffins but I am not convinced and would love opinions. here's the deal
Serving size 1/4 cup
cal 90
total fat 0.5g
sodium 210 mg
carb 8g
fibre 5g
sugar 0
protein 13 g
Ingredients wheat gluten, corn starch, leavening, casein, protein, whey protein, salt
Muffin instructions
2 cups atkins bake mix
1 tbsp baking powder
5 packets splenda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup club soda
2 eggs
1 tbsp canola oil
2 tspn vanilla
yeild is 6 muffins
Any thoughts? It say net carbs is 26 grams but it also says net atkins count is 3g. (i don't follow atkins so I don't know what that means!)
Any thoughts? Safe to use to make muffins? Do they have enough protein in them too? I am not convinced so I thought I'd throw it out there for some help.
Thanks!!
Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (63 posts) at 08:52 PM
When I was on Atkins I did make some muffins, I don't know if I made them from an Atkins box mix or from this Bake Mix. I did have the Bake Mix in my pantry until recently. Anyway, I didn't like the muffins I made. Low carb bread just taste funky to me, hard to describe. I wouldn't make them now, no matter how desperate I was for a muffin. I would save it for my free meal/day and have the real thing. I think you could probably find a better recipe or adjust an exisisting one by using wheat, buckwheat, oatmeal or soy flour.
Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (63 posts) at 08:41 PM
I made this tonight for dinner and I had to throw it out (gave the meat to the dog). I never throw out food, I usually try to suck it up, but this did not come out right!! I think the recipe is off, too much chicken broth, not enough stuffing mix? I don't know, but it was a mushy mess and the cranberries turned everything purple. Has anyone else tried this recipe with success? Luckily I had stuff on hand for the turkey burgers and made those, which came out good. Although the meat mix was very loose, I didn't know if it would meld together to make a patty or if it would just fall apart on the grill. It came out okay though, but next time I will use a little less egg subsitute.
It's been a long time since I've made an inedible meal, maybe my cooking karma wasn't with me today.

I started doing these a few weeks ago and you feel it the next day. It took me a while to keep my balance, but I did eventually get better, but I still have to concentrate on it. Hopefully it will get better for you. LOL!
Body for Life Forum Message by Jmskelton (222 posts) at 10:45 AM
No, I've not improved too much on those, but I've been doing one legged leg press - that's another OMG. What a difference it makes.
Body for Life Forum Message by Voluptu-ass (245 posts) at 11:04 AM
OMG, OMG, OMG!!!!
I'll be doing these tomorrow for the first time in a long while. I really don't like these lunges but know they're essential if I want good legs.
I always get cramp in the foot that's resting on the bench when I do these.
OMG, I'm starting to ache just thinking about them!!!

I think Tai Kee is the expert in this field.
Body for Life Forum Message by jamber (300 posts) at 12:48 PM
I'll admit it...I am closet lunge LOVER! I've been doing the one-legged ones for 4 weeks now and my butt has hurt every day for 4 weeks!! I do them for my main exercise and then do deadlift with 70 lbs(soon to be 80) and lemme tell ya, BOOTY BURN!! I have to change it up after this week and I'm a litle sad about it, boo hoo. Before that I was doing the walking ones and they were killer, too. Love em, Love em. I have pretty good balance and coordintaion(thanks, 8 years of ballet!) and Its still tough on those last ones to keep everything in line. OOOOOOOWEEEEE!
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1755 posts) at 12:56 PM
I use the smith machine when I do them - the bar helps with the balance.
Otherwise I'd be falling on my head trying to balance on one foot, on the bench AND hold weights LMAO.
Body for Life Forum Message by FinallyReady (28 posts) at 01:06 PM
I tried these this morning too but had to give it up pretty quickly as I kept almost falling. Felt like a dork.
Body for Life Forum Message by DDRTeddy (355 posts) at 01:09 PM
ok Guys I must have good balance! I have no trouble with them. I've never done anything to get balance.... I wonder.,,, is it in the genes?
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2660 posts) at 01:19 PM
I wish I had a smith machine to do them! But I work out at home, so it's just me, the bench, and my obviously poor balance! :D
Body for Life Forum Message by florida twin momma (41 posts) at 01:24 PM
okay here is probably the stupidest question of the day...... what bench? a step bench? a workout bench? what about squats can you do those one legged on bench or just with your other leg bent ?
val
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2660 posts) at 01:28 PM
It's not a stupid question. :)
It's a workout bench, with your back foot on the bench (the top of your foot is against the bench). Squats, I'm not sure I'd do those with my foot that high, but definitely on a step!
Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (364 posts) at 01:30 PM
I actually found them practically TOO hard to do...!? I wonder if I was doing them wrong. I could barely do 5 without feeling so awkward and uncomfortable...hmm, maybe I should give them another go. Good question Val.
Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1798 posts) at 01:32 PM
Wohoooo great work out girlie! Those def. are a work out and 1/2. Another good one that I discovered a week ago and it is the new object of my loathing and hate are these ones you do on a smith machine and you bring your leg back and as you come up you bring that leg up to your knee and that leg is not allowed to touch the floor on it's way back down. OMGawd thought I was gonna die on that one. I think any type of lunge is hell ..... but it gives you one hell of a booty!
BTW I saw your new pic.s you look great!!! Man it is just melting off of you!!! Love the new suit too! You look great girl!

After reading this post I had to take my bottle of water and go to the bathroom and cry. I am on the 4th week of my first cchallenge and so far the results have been amazing. If you look into my cubicle, there is my training journal, cooler and bootle of water. I am in the military and have to be at work at 6:30 in the morning, so I have to wake up at 3:00 and drive almost 1 hour to do my workout and still make it on time by 6:30. I get the crazy looks at the gym of "OMG what is he doing? He is going to get hurt". But everytime I hit my "10" and think that I have no more juice to complete another rep and my muscles are burning like crazy, I visualize myself on a stage with a bunch of people taking pictures and cheering for me when I get the grand prize. I told my wife that I was not going to try it. I am going to win and will do whatever is under my control to achieve it. So far I have endured a lot of pressure from my co-workers to go out and have lunch. They already had given up, because they know I am committed to finish this and finish amongst the first. It has been a lot of pain already, but I have my wife's support all the way. I know that makes a lot of difference.

Thank you for this thread! I have been curious if BFL has helped people with depression to the point that meds are not necessary.
I finally came to the realization 2 or 3 months ago that I am most likely suffering from a mild form of depression and if it wasn't for BFL, 2005 would be off to a really crappy start.
I really dislike my job and coworkers (negative work environment and I'm not being challenged in ways that I enjoy), my partners voted my out of the consulting firm that we started on the side and didn't inform me about it until a week after the fact, I still haven't passed a licening exam that I need to further my career (so I'm stuck in my current job) and last week I found out I didn't get a job I applied for that would have been taking a demotion (for a better work environment and challenges) and I was told if I had my license, they could have justified giving it to me over the guy who go the job (apparently it was between me and this other guy).
My wife thinks I need to go see my doctor and get on Wellbutrin to help my pass my test in October.
If it wasn't for BFL, I really think I would be in a really deep depression right now.
Because of the positive changes BFL has made in me, I know its going to be ok and I can focus on the things that are going right in my life. My family, friends and improving fitness. I also realize that there are many, many people out there who are much worse off than I am and who have problems that make mine seem trivial.
Body for Life Forum Message by jbuffettfan (60 posts) at 10:32 AM
Sloth I feel for you. I am in nursing school full time and trying to raise 2 little girls. I had to end up getting on some meds, because I could not quit having anxiety attacks last semester. I am bad about letting stuff build up inside of me and then when its too much I explode.
I am off for the summer and I am getting back control of my health before next semester starts. I am off of the medicine because all it did was make me want to sleep. Working out has always been my way of dealing with stress and while I was in school I really did not have much time for it. The school makes our schedule, we do not. It's not like other college classes you take. Then you have clinicals and all of the paperwork on top of test and studying. I'm surprised we don't have students having nervous breakdowns.
Anyway, good luck and let BFL be your new medicine. If you find it is not working then I would go to my doctor for wellbutrin, and I hope you did not stop taking the medicine suddenly. Best of luck to you now that we were both able to vent a little. Take care.

depression and fatigue. I have not posted in a while now. For the past 6 weeks or so I have been trying to get off of my medication: Lexapro 10mg. And even though it help my mood and fatigue, I can never reach my weight loss goals. Anyone that knows anything about SSRIs can add unwanted lbs, no mater what you do. I have dieted and exercised, drank my water and the fat will not come off. Regardless, i do not want to depend on meds for the rest of my life either for this.
The thing is I have been tappering slowly of the SSRI and having my fatigue problems return. Around July of last year, i went to the Dr. to try to figure out what in the hell was wrong with me....tired...tired....tired. They did numerous test, but nothing as ususal . The only thing they can think of is that the fatigue is due to depression. But i do not feel depressed, well maybe a little down, but that is due to the way i am feeling about this fatigue. My questions are this. Has anyone expierenced anything like this and had success eating and exercising for energy on the BFL instead of taking drugs. Thank you. and i do plan on starting the Challenge over soon.
Body for Life Forum Message by Cloudyday (1 posts) at 11:26 AM
I just joined body for life today to overcome depression. I'm doing this instead of doing the big "S". I dont take meds because they just mask the problem they dont cure it. The only way is to eat right, excercise, and change the way you talk to yourself. I really would rather just check out than keep trying but I always say I'll wait a day before I make a decision like that and it's always the next day that I've changed my mind.
Body for Life Forum Message by sloth501 (17 posts) at 03:44 PM
I had started to take Wellbutrin back in July 2003 but my wife got sick (she was 37 weeks pregnant) and had to have labor induced, our son wound up in NICU for 7 days and I forgot to keep taking it. I never followed up with my doctor to try it again.
jbuffetfan, I know how hard nursing school can be. My wife graduated back in 2001 after supporting me while I got my engineering degree. I can truly say that she had to work a lot harder her BSN I did for my degree. Keep at it and you'll get there!

try a nutritionalist for food that you should be eating and then get info on herbs that you should be taking, like Holly and Rescue remedy! they work and fast!
Body for Life Forum Message by Fraigle29 (6 posts) at 04:04 PM
I was on the same medication and had a very hard time loosing weight (but I felt really ok all the time). Now that I am off the medication, I do have to work at loosing weight, and I'm fighting depression all the time. I think for me, it will always be a battle, but one that can be overcome. I think BFL is helping me learn to listen to my body, "am I really tired, or is this a down time and I'm really reacting to that?" I have found that if I move to doing something that I enjoy, suddenly I have plenty of energy to keep going.
Good luck!

Hey Rod, as long as you are pooped after your SHIIT thats all that matters. Giving it all you have. I got to 3.15 one time and have not been able to get there again. All I know is that I have been busting my hump and that is all that matters. The hard work will pay off. Even if I don't see 3.25 miles before the "youngster" Braxton. I will keep hittin' my 10's. Good Job, I think anything close to 3 miles is awsome. I have been running out of steam around 17 minutes, I will reduce speed for 30 sec to 1 min or until I recover then I try to kick up until I am spent. If I look like I just went swimming after my HIIT I am happy!!

I did C1 by the book. I now do 1UB, 1LB, and 1 Whole Body Toning Lift per week. 3 x HIIT and one 60 min fat burn cardio.
I think by the book works. I just like to mix things up to keep my body guessing. Besides I've only got a few lbs. to drop and feel like extra cardio is what it will take.

Mybodycomp is not callibrated to deal with a muscular female physique. If you have big muscular legs it gets factored in like fat, because that's where a lot of women carry fat.
Body for Life Forum Message by Ann (320 posts) at 06:37 AM
Wow, Muscle Mommy...how do you know that?
Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (1035 posts) at 06:52 AM
Well. . . I don't know it. This is an assumption. What I do know is that it is based on a particular standard of body proportions, and people who deviate from those proportions are not accurately represented. If you are unevenly muscled and particularly muscular in places where fat usually accumulates it will give you an apparent higher body fat percentage

I see nothing disappointing about dropping 25lbs of FAT in 12 weeks!
Do what khubbard suggested and pick up a 25 lb plate or dumbell and hold onto it for a while and get a feel for how much it really weighs. 12 weeks ago, that weight was part of you and now it is gone forever!
If people disappoint you, use it for fuel to really hit those 10's. The majority of the population gain weight and lose health over time. Your going in the right direction!
Keep it up!
Yours in Health,
Kerry

good job on avoiding the "temptation". i knew i was going to make it in the this challenge when i was with a group of people and they were pigging out and i didn't even want to. i to would have just joined in in the past but i didn't even have the desire to.

something i've started doing when someone at work has a birthday celebration is bringing a fruit plate for everyone to share as an alternative to cake. i'm always surprised by the number of people who actually want to eat the fruit instead!

Thanks guys! Your support means a lot to me. Just wanted to make it clear that the photo was posted in week 1 of C1 but was not taken at that time but rather about 6 months earlier.
I had seen that photo before and quickly put it away! But having photos like that are sure a great motivator to stay on track! Man! How in the heck can someone live in a body like that?!!!
Keep on truckin' gang!

Great success, so far you've had (in my *Yoda-speak* lol) I'm sure you'll reach your goals. You are such an inspiration!
I have my before pics. I never realized just how bad I look. I call my before pics "The Unholy". I don't even have the courage to post them on here. I recently saw myself on TV and I must say there was a strong resemblance to Jabba the Hut. Not trying to be negative, just realistic. I'm not looking good these days! But, I'm getting there little by little. I totally understand about the photos being motivating factors.
Oh yeah, this is about YOU! AWESOME progress! I can only imagine how good you feel!
Take care,
:)

Body for Life Forum Message by Slacker in Hawaii (26 posts) at 12:22 AM
Yeah, one of my goals is to actually get up earlier and work normal working hours instead of at night.
The other goal is to spend less time in bed after I wake up thinking about working out.
My first meal is usually around 11am. Today it was around noon, almost an hour after working out.

I am new, what is HIIT?
Body for Life Forum Message by Go4steffie (198 posts) at 05:10 AM
HIIT is HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING. it is the way Bill Phillips describes doing cardio and upping your level for one minute intervals. it is very important to do HIIT and not just 20 minutes of "regular" cardio. HIIT burn the fat better!
Body for Life Forum Message by CharlieOhio (57 posts) at 06:56 AM
For my cardio (I do 40 minutes): I do a combination of situps, eliptical and jump rope. Switching up gives me variety and completely eeliminates boredom.
I end up getting an abs workout with my cardio. I also so rotate in some back extensions on my core ball. My using a couple dumbells. My goal is to SOAK MY SHIRT WITH SWEAT...
Most of the folks here recommend doing BFL to the "T" which is 20 minutes with interval training. I can't argue with Bill Phillips or their Great Results...

yeah.. today was day one. it was good, never got to my sixth meal because i was too full. :D
there was a setback.. this guy at the gym, he worked there, but he didn't have a name tag or anything.. anyway, my sister and i have binders.. binders excite me, and everything is right there. anyway.. he wanted to see, and.. i wasn't ready to show. so he came out with all these crazy accusations 'is it some crazy internet thing? are you DOING it right? is it WORKING?' naturally.. i was a bit more than sensitive about it, changing your whole life isn't something just.. easy to do. he made me feel so.. like i couldn't do it right if i had bill living next door. so.. i left the floor, went to the bathroom, cried.. and we left.
but now.. every time i see him, i know i'll just want to throw it in his face. yes, i'm doing it right, thanks. yes, i'm changing my life. yes, i'm making the best person i can possibly be.
so. there's day one. and thank you to EVERYONE who's already helped me. there are 83 days to go.. and i'll be asking lots of questions.
..this is for every fat person who's finally gotten up and off the couch only to be pushed back down after the first step.

aww, yvonne, we've got the same b4l birthday!
and, yes. i have to take it with me. i want to record my weights, i want to look at the exercises, but i'm not ashamed of it. i mean, really, what can i be doing wrong, how can it be a crazy internet scheme if it's DIET AND EXERCISE?!
oh well. this guy, and my big fat ass, they're all the motivation i need.
my sister, who is turning 16 in june, and wants to do the program on her own, she thinks every boy is cute. before she knew that i was crying, she told me she thought the guy was cute. in the car on the way home from the gym, she turned to me and said 'i lied, he's ugly.'
i love that girl.

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (829 posts) at 12:43 AM
Hi gang!
Just got back from my trip to Corpus Christi, Texas for my nephew's wedding...Man! I missed you guys!!!
First things first! YES! I stayed on my program! I worked out each morning in the hotel fitness room while the rest of the family was pigging out at the breakfast buffet! Although it was challenging I ate clean. I even partied with everyone - drinking my diet coke and water while they drank beer. scotch and what-have-you... I didn't even feel the urge to cheat...this simply means too much to me!!!
Reactions to me dropping 83lbs since Jan. 3rd (and 108lbs since last November)???
Well, my Mom saw me 41 lbs ago but was still very excited about my improvement since then. She was so pleased about the weight loss but she was most impressed by how much healthier I look... She said that I look healthier than I have for years and even better than when I was at a much lighter weight. Looking through some older photos, I noticed that my face and body had a puffy look even when my weight was 30 lbs less than it is now. My Mom is certain that my chronic illness began years before I thought it did...
The rest of the family hadn't seen me since Christmas (83 lbs ago!)...they were simply stunned! Not only by the weight loss but that I looked so much more alive. They said I looked 10 years younger. They commented that I had my 'spark' back and my sense of humor...
My Mom was so proud and excited...she made sure EVERYONE in the family knew..."Jim has lost over 100lbs since last November! Doesn't he look great! I'm so proud of him!" What a contrast that was to the last several years...she was always reminding people that I was sick when they commented about me being so heavy...
My stepbrother kind of summed it up best while we were out in the ocean fishing...
"Jim, remember last summer when I came to visit you in San Diego? When we went down to the waterfront, you could only walk about 50 yards (because of muscles fatigue and exhaustion)...you had to sit down and rest for 10 minutes and then you'd go another 50 yards...You were really hurting...
And now here you are, looking great and you've been standing on the boat all day with no problems...I'm impressed! What an amazing improvement since last summer!!!"
Over the last several years, I never doubted that if I could get my illness under control, that I could lose the excess weight and regain my fitness... But, this trip to Texas gave me the confidence that I am FINALLY getting this stubborn illness under control, and that I will be able to keep it under control for the rest of my life! My God that is so encouraging!!!
I had thought at first that maybe I couldn't afford to go on this trip...but with all of the encouragement and confidence I received as well as the joy of seeing my proud Mom being so giddy bragging about her son, I guess the obvious truth is that I couldn't afford NOT to go...
Jim

HOLY COW!!! I FEEL LIKE I JUST WALKED INTO A SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY OR SOMETHING!!!
You guys are incredible!!! You all need to move to San Diego so we can hang out together!!! (Yuk! Yuk!)
Seriously, when I logged on to Tracker a few minutes ago, I was blown away by your supportive and thoughtful replies! I had no idea that going on a trip to a wedding could be that inspiring to me much less anyone else!
I knew this trip would make an impact on my family but I had no idea it would have such an impact on me! My stepbrother really gave me a big wake-up call when he reminded me that just last summer walking 50 yards was an ordeal! I'm tellin' ya', I'm gonna make sure to remember that when I'm feeling less than thrilled about my progress!!!
I also wanted to add that this is the first time in my life I EVER remember my Mom saying "Jim, I am so proud of you!"... It's not that she wasn't proud of me many times before, but there always seemed to be so much chaos growing up that we didn't sit down and let each other know how much we cared and respected each other. I've got to admit there is still a little boy in me that really needs to hear it from his Mom...
Perhaps, adversity, illness and loss of loved ones have brought my family back to a place of clarity about what is really important in this life...
BTW -- My nephew wanted to talk about fitness with me so I told him about BFL. He said he was only 25 and his blood pressure was high. He has been working out for the last couple of months but wanted to make better progress and take it to a high level. Well, won't he be pleased to open his wedding present from me and see the BFL book and journal as well as the EFL cookbook?! You betcha!!!
I'm glad that this experience inspires you but please remember that without you guys and your support, this road would be pretty lonely and certainly a lot less fun!!!

So now its my turn. I started C1 Jan. 10 and have read over the weeks how people have had the flu, a cold, etc. Actually I skimmed over the reading since it wasn't me sick, I was just thankful to not have to go through that. I've been lucky though; its been almost a year probably and no cold from kids or anything.
What do you guys do? Do you push it to the limit? Yesterday was UBWO, I did it, was a bit weaker and sweating, dizzy, shaking. Today cardio and abs. Its in my chest, you know the kind that hurts with the slightest cough. I'm thinking just do the best I can. Its probably better doing it than not even though you're not working "as hard" as when you're well.
I know some have taken the day off. What do you guys recommend? I know if I get through it the rest of the day I'll be flopped on the couch and if I don't do it I'll still be on the couch.

I got sick a few weeks ago, and for 2 days I just could not work out. I did go get some vegetable soup (lowfat) and I ate on that for a couple of meals. On the third day I did about 1/2 my lower body workout, and had to quit. My theory is the body needs rest to recover, and there is a reason that you feel sick when you excert yourself. Just pick up where you left off in the workouts when you feel like you can.

Body for Life Forum Message by Chris (271 posts) at 08:03 AM
Do your work outs the best you can, anything is better than nothing, get plenty of rest and take your meds. I went through this last week. I didn't worry too much about my work out intensity, I was just happy to up and at the gym, I actually felt a little better after my work outs. My blood was flowing through my body and I could actually breath a little better. Just do't push it.
Body for Life Forum Message by MisterE (94 posts) at 08:05 AM
Tracey, this is important so listen up as a rule if you are sick from the neck up as in head cold go for it and push through if you have a chest cold DON'T do HIIT! It will make it much worse I have known this for years and still being a man and not liking to follow directions I did this in January when I had bronchittis and it turned into pnemonia I wasn't healthy again for almost 3 months
Body for Life Forum Message by khubbard (167 posts) at 08:06 AM
To prevent sickness (sometimes it is inevitable b/c of the stress you are keeping your body under . . . especially in the early weeks) I take Vitamin C and use EAS Glutamine after my workouts. If you do get sick, you can still workout (depending on the sickness). If it's a cold (chest and nose) you can still hit it hard. Just push through it b/c a virus simply has to run its course. If it's an infection (one that can be treated with antibiotics) then you might want to hold back a little and let your body fight the infection. As I always say though, we are all different so do what's best for you. That wonderful Gov. in California (sarcasm) says the biggest gains in your personal fitness are on the days when you don't want to workout. Those are the days you make your gains b/c you are staying consistent. Good luck to all!!!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (699 posts) at 08:40 AM
My opinion is you should rest if you really feel awful. My experience is that pushing through when I really am very sick is not good. If I just have a mild cold - I go for it. But when I am feeling like I have been for the past 3 days (yep, I am sick, too!), I just know that it would do more harm than good. I am just forcing myself to stay on track with food and water (not easy when you feel lousy and don't want to eat or drink), and as soon as I don't feel like I need to lay down every 10 minutes, I will start back with my workouts.
Take it easy, up the water consumption and work out if you feel like you can. Oh yeah...getting LOTS of rest! Your body needs it to recover!

I finally had to get back in the gym, I'm one of those if I pay the money, I'm going to do it regardless. However, I believe it is very important to get rest when you are sick, but I am hard headed. That's probably why I am still suffering with pain in my head and face.
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (1597 posts) at 10:22 AM
I think you should do whatever you feel comfortable with. If you feel up to working out then give it a shot. If you don't then skip it until your feeling better. There is no right or wrong answer. Its all about what you feel is best :D

This happened to me this past weekend, first time I have been sick in quite some time, I didn't work out Friday, Saturday, or Sunday (Friday is free day for me though so I really only missed 2 workouts) and I was panicking at the time plus we were eating out, I got on the scale Monday expecting to have gained two lbs. and had lost a lb! I am also better, my mother-in-law (who gave me the cold) was shocked I was better already! Do what you need to do to get better, if you can work out go for it, if not, don't worry, it won't make a bit of difference in the long run! Feel better!

Thanks for all your responsises, sniffle, sniffle. Did cardio this morning - a 10 was more like a 7 on normal days. Did ab bootcamp and took a bit longer than usual to get thru so I guess its not too bad, better than doing nothing. I'm sure I don't have an infection just a really good juicy cold.
Made homemade chickend soup with chick breasts & lots of veggies - should be interesting, I think I'll eat it with quinoa. Thankfully this cold is making me extra thirsty too. Tormorrow is LBWO - yikes.
Thanks again, back to the couch soon, sniff, sniff.

I've started a little tradition...when I reach a new goal, I purchase a new piece of fitness gear. So far I've 'earned' a polar heartrate monitor, lots of cute tanks, a few pair of workout capris, and a mini iPod. At the end of challenge 2, I'm not sure what I'll get, but it'll be good.
I think it helps to feel good in your workout stuff and reward yourself in a nonfood related way.

once i hit week four, i'm buying a tank to workout in if i hit my waist measurement goal :)
Body for Life Forum Message by jamber (300 posts) at 09:19 AM
I get the 2-pack tank tops at Costco for 10$ amd then I get workout pants ocasionally at Ross, usually around 10-20$. I'm not the snazziest dresser at the gym, but I"m not the worst, either.
Body for Life Forum Message by Daaang Girl (800 posts) at 09:28 AM
I wear $10 workout capris from wal mart and the $5 t shirts from wal mart. Every time I went there, I would get another pair in a different color. So now I have 3 pairs of workout capris and a few t shirts. I don't really think anyone notices/cares if you are dressed differently. I only have more than one because I hate laundry..lol. No way I'm gonna wash that stuff every day!
Body for Life Forum Message by jbuffettfan (60 posts) at 09:33 AM
Tinuz you kind of have a little tradition going on. I'm that way on cardio days. I usually wear the same shorts or one's just like them but a different color. I do this because I have found what is comfortable on the machines and doesn't "ride up" on me; therefore, I don't have to quit just to rearrange everything.
It's okay if you are not the snazziest dresser in the gym, I particularly do not pay attention to what people are wearing and I am sure many others don't either. I go for comfort and to get my workout done and that's it.

My old New Balance 601's have seen better days, and what with considering doing a marathon I decided I needed a good pair of running shoes. Everything I've read suggests it's especially important for beginning runners to have good shoes in order to prevent injury. I got online and found a specialty running store not too far away. Wow, the sales guy was really thorough. I came in, said I was looking for shoes that were good for running. He looked at my feet, laughed, and said "Not those!" I tried on several pair, ran on a treadmill. Ran on the treadmill with different shoes on each foot, until we found the pair that worked best for me. I ended up with a pair of the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 5. I hadn't realized I was an overpronator (my footprint suggested normal to underpronator), but the shoes DEFINITELY make my feet feel more stable while running.

Hey Muscle Mommy way to go! I have those shoes and really like them! Although I still blistered in the marathon! I think that's just my feet though!
I'm glad you were fitted properly. It makes a huge difference when you start getting into the high miles!
Have you officially decided to do the marathon?
Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (1035 posts) at 08:04 AM
icandoit!, runnersworld.com has a listing of running specialty stores in US and Canada
http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,5033,s6-52-74-0-1048,00.html
DO NOT just buy shoes online. Go to a specialty store where they will help you find what works best for you and fit the shoe properly so that all the cushioning is in the right place. There was one pair the guy was sure would be perfect for me, but when I tried them out he could see they did not work at all.
Marathon2, I am seriously, seriously considering it. I've signed up for the free training program the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon endorses, and according to them, 99% of the people who follow the program finish the race. The training schedule starts June 6. I'm going to try out my running legs, and come to a final decision by then. Even if I don't end up doing it I'm glad to have a good pair of running shoes.

I would hate for anyone to feel the pain I had from my old tennies can we say OUCH! Good luck on training for your Marathon! Remember you need to get a new pair every 4-6 months depending on the mileage you put on them. I am sure he told you that though. Good luck MM!!! I am so excited for you!

Some posts got me thinking...(yeah, that usually means UTOH!)
I dont' want to "BULK" I want toned...
It is my understanding that less weight/more reps causes toning
more weight/more reps causes bulk
Am I correct??
Will BFL cause me to bulk or tone??? I mean over long term....
Body for Life Forum Message by justdoit (108 posts) at 07:47 AM
When I completed my first BFL program (before I got pregnant for twins!!!) I didn't tweak ANYTHING!! I went from a size 10/12 to a 4 and I was small and toned and tight. The flab was gone and "bulk" would not have been a word used to describe me!! The proof is in the pictures, look at cheetara, TNT, Goddessa etc - they are toned, not bulky. Good Luck - I hear everyone elses opinions and I read other theories all of the time - every magazine thinks they do it the best way. I have tried many of these other ways in the past and I did have success - but not nearly the success I have had with BFL (not to say others haven't had success with other programs!!). That's just my opinion, I wish you all the best.
Body for Life Forum Message by MisterE (94 posts) at 07:48 AM
Franciie, BFL will give you added muscle but it is NOT a bulking program it is by definition a cutting and toning program Bulking programs are ones where you would not do more than 6 reps.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2660 posts) at 07:49 AM
Also Franciie, as a woman you will find it very hard to "bulk" because you don't have the testosterone required for that kind of muscle building. Just look at any of the female BFL champions or any of the women on this board who've had successful transformations. Do they look bulky to you? :)

For women it is very toning. My first challenge I went from a 18 to size 12. I lost fat and was building muscle. My second challenge I as at my target weight but still dropped a couple but muscle definition was amazing. You will definately tone!
Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (1035 posts) at 08:10 AM
Bulk is a genetic thing. I am bulky. There's a woman at the gym who lifts the same amounts as I do with higher body fat than me who is very petite and sleek. Tai Ki lifts about the same as I do and is very petite and sleek. It's horribly unfair, but that's the way it works.
Body for Life Forum Message by Franciie (289 posts) at 08:37 AM
I have too much testosterone (PCOS) so that is why I am worried about bulking...

I got this in an email, thought others might like it. 21 lessons:
1) Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
2) Marry a man / woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.
3) Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.
4) When you say, "I love you," mean it.
5) When you say, "I am sorry," look the person in the eye.
6) Be engaged at least 6 months before you get married.
7) Believe in love at first sight.
8) NEVER laugh at anyone's dreams. People who don't have dream's don't have much.
9) Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.
10) In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.
11) Don't judge people by their relatives.
12) Talk slowly but think quickly.
13) When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, "Why do you want to know?"
14) Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
15) Say "bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.
16) When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
17) Remember the three R's: Respect for self, Respect for others, and responsibility for all your actions.
18) Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
19) When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
20) Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.
21) Spend some time alone.
I hope everyone makes it an incredible day. I am off to do my morning HIT!!!!!!!!

To prevent sickness (sometimes it is inevitable b/c of the stress you are keeping your body under . . . especially in the early weeks of your challenge) I take Vitamin C in the morning and EAS Glutamine after my workouts.

Scuba - I agree with it boosting the immune system! I am sick right now, but overall, I have been very healthy since starting BFL. I totally attribute that to my bfl life-style!!

I know that I may get a little heat for asking this question but I own a dance school in Louisiana and I have 5 weeks till the recital. I was wondering if there is anything I can do to speed results for the fat loss. I was thinking more cardio or less carbs. Any advice would be great!
Body for Life Forum Message by Shane (36 posts) at 09:17 AM
Here is my thought...you didn't put on all the extra weight in 5 weeks so it isn't going come off in 5 weeks! The BFL program is a lifestyle change...not a race to the finish. It is a well balanced program that when it is followed correctly can achieve positive results. If you start now...you will see changes by week 5 but don't set an unrealitic expectation of trying to lose to much to fast...you will only be disappointed with the results and it will demotivate you. Stick with the 12 week plan...you'll be glad you did!!
Body for Life Forum Message by MHall (28 posts) at 09:30 AM
I know thats what I thought I waited too long to start and had some trouble in the begining and now I am desperate to be thin by my recital. I have about 20 pounds to loose and was hoping to loose about 10 in 5 weeks.
Thanks anyway, and I agree.
Body for Life Forum Message by jbuffettfan (60 posts) at 09:37 AM
Why don't you go ahead and accept the challenge as a lifestyle change, and promise yourself that you will continue it after the recital is over. I bet you will lose a little weight and you will feel a whole lot better about yourself.
Body for Life Forum Message by popeye (368 posts) at 09:37 AM
10 lbs in 5 weeks is attianable. You have to keep your diet tight and stay active during the day, IE not being sedentary... Hitting your 10's on HIIT days is a must and working out at a cardio pace will help also. You may have to limit free day to a free meal, but all you realy need to do on free day to reset your body is add 400 to 500 cals. No simple sugars or processed junk and you should be able to hit it or get realy darn close...
Body for Life Forum Message by Daaang Girl (800 posts) at 09:38 AM
You should definately be able to lose 10 lbs in 5 weeks. Have you tried thermo dynamix? I have heard a lot of good things about that. If not that, then try drinking a cup of coffee before your workouts. Also, I have read that khubbard really watched what kind of carbs he ate later in the day. (no breads, potatoes, rice, more veggies) You can always do a little more cardio, just not HIIT more than 3 times a week. When you DO do the HIIT, make sure you are doing it on an empty stomach (that goes for weights, too) first thing in the morning and not eating until an hour after. Also make sure you're not cheating yoruself out of your 10s. If you can go anotehr minute after hitting your 10s on HIIT, it wasn't a 10. Your mind will tell you you can't do it, but if you try, you'll be amazed at how much you can do.
You can go to fitday.com and track your calories for a few days to make sure you aren't overdoing it. Watch your portions. Measure everything to make sure you're not sneaking in more than you think you are. And drink your water! So so so important. If you are drinking 10 glasses now, make it 15, or try for at LEAST a gallon a day. There are a few things you can do to make sure you are getting as much out of the program as you can.
Good idea about free day, too, really watch that one!
Body for Life Forum Message by jamber (300 posts) at 12:29 PM
I pretty much lost 10 lbs in my first 5 weeks, and I took a generous free day, and did everything else to the letter. If you really are dedicated, I think you can do it!!! Go for it!!

So the people in the cubes next to me brought in a great big homemade cake for a mid morning snack. It is a really good cake, I must admit they do a very good job with baking. But, it was taking everything to resist it until one of the said, "Oh, she will have a piece before the day is out diet or not."
Well now, talk about making me reaffirm my strength!! What irritates me is that they will keep trying to convince me to eat that cake all day long. Time for some cottage cheese and yogurt!

how about bring a big bowl of friut and setting it on you desk. the next time they are pigging out grab an apple and start eating it with them. i bet it will hit home. they will see you looking slim and fit and then think to themselves why can't i look like that and then look at the cake they are eating and the apple you are eating and it will hit home even if they don't say it out load.
in other words give them a little silent guilt trip about their chioces compared to yours.

The answer to the million dollar question about sugar pushers is....
Because they have no will power themselves so they must chip away at everyone else. And misery loves company. The fact that someone else can make a drastic change shakes the foundations of thier own denial and excuse filled lives...
BTW.. Good job on staving off the cravings, it always helps me when someone say that I cant do it too.
Body for Life Forum Message by jbuffettfan (60 posts) at 09:56 AM
They do it because they don't have any willpower and they try to push you to where you don't either. Don't give in. Even if you want a piece of cake I wouldn't eat theirs, wait until you get off if you just have to have some and go buy you a cake or better yet wait until free day. Don't let them overpower you to prove to themselves you are weak.

The gym has cards for patrons to keep track of their workouts on, and special sheets that those who use personal trainers are given to follow their special workouts. Of course I have my own that are more BFL oriented, and I carry them around in a plastic pink folder with hearts on it (a gift from my 7 yo daughter LOL) which does not look terribly professional.

Has anyone ever gotten a tummy tuck after loosing weight on BFL? Just curious becuase I went to a Plastic surgeon before starting BFL (actually a few) and they all said if I loose weight that I will have sagging skin becuase of severe stretch marks. I am discouraged by this since I can not afford such an expensive proccedure and I will bust my butt and still have a stomach from H@ll ! But I am going to have to wait and see what happens either way I will still feel better. I did buy that really expensive stretch mark cream from GNC so heres to wishful thinking.

two words.
Bull s***. :) Your stomach is nothing compared to a lot of people I have seen, and mine was even worse in my before photos.
It will disappear - just keep up our cardio, good food, and weights. You won't need plastic surgery at the end of your 12 weeks.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1755 posts) at 09:40 AM
And I meant that as a good thing - you look fantastic in your before photos so after 12 weeks you'll be smokin!
Body for Life Forum Message by Voluptu-ass (245 posts) at 09:45 AM
I have to agree with Tai.
I've just looked at your photo and the last thing you need is surgery.
You are absolutely beautiful and don't you dare think otherwise!!
Your body will tone up with BFL. Just give it the full 12 weeks and you'll see
xx

I am having it done in sept. i am doing bfl hardcore when i get back from the beach. it will work out perfect. i tlaked to my doc about what my goals were and how i wanted to take gymnastics and eventually get into figure and fitness competitions. he is very supportive and thought my goals were reasonable. i am super excited!!!

remember that a plastic surgeon makes their living from people like us. or should i say the people we used to be. you are stronger now than you were when you went for your consultations (and i mean stronger in your thinking). my biggest concern is also my stomach. after four kids and eating like an insane person for so many years it is what i feel is my worst body part but i know that at the end of 12 weeks it will look better than when i started and will only get better get better as time goes by. keep your chin up it will happen.
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (1597 posts) at 09:57 AM
OK that was a case of a plastic surgeon seeing a chance to make some cha-chiiiiiing!!!! There is NO WAY IN HELL you are going to require a tummy tuck at the end of your 12 weeks. You are going to look awesome!!! Your belly really isn't bad to begin with. I have to agree with Tai, he fed you a line of bull sh** :D

I have to 2nd Tai-Kee on the BS. My wife weighed 160 after the birth of our 2nd monster. She is 5'6" and very small framed. She did BFL without knowing thats what it was, low fat, high protein and cardio and weights. No Tummy Tuck. She now a size 4 with six pack abs. She has maintained her size for 5 years by living the BFL lifestyle.
Sticking to the program, HIITing those 10's and eating clean is a natural Tummy Tuck. You look great in the before picture, can't wait to see 12 weeks!
Body for Life Forum Message by garrettsmom (65 posts) at 10:02 AM
As someone who is also trying to get back a prebaby body I understand your concern. What they may have meant is that people who get stretch marks don't have very elastic skin, so after losing weight there may be some sagging skin. From what I have read usually people who need to have plastic surgery done after weight loss are those who were extremely overweight for a long period of time. You are pretty young and your skin should still be fairly elastic. You might just need to give it a little time to shrink back up. You already look great in your pictures, I'm sure you'll see wonderful results in 12 weeks !
Body for Life Forum Message by icandoit! (6 posts) at 10:15 AM
First of all, you are beautiful to begin with. My best friend had a tummy tuck after losing weight the wrong way, had complications, and almost died...she is still having troubles. I have found through all the "diets" out there that BFL is not one...it is a life-style change. When you add the weights with the cardio and the eating right, you will feel better and look better. This change is both physical and mental. When you really get into the BFL challenge...you will think yourself crazy for even considering such a procedure. (just my opinion)

My My My,
Your before pic is um, "HOT". You are beautiful and your tummy will flatten out in no time!! You may have some stretch mark that are not visible in the picture, but you will not have skin hanging when you are done with your 12 week challange. Good luck, Hit your 10's and you will be prebaby bod in no time.
Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (1035 posts) at 11:38 AM
You look great. You may have a little sagging skin, but not a lot. You will probably be the only one to really notice it. How much is it worth to you to have it tight? And oh my gosh, you are only 23? Honey don't DON'T do it unless you get your tubes tied. Really. You have a lot of fertile years left, and another pregnancy would stretch you out again.
Body for Life Forum Message by Booty Babe!! (1219 posts) at 11:55 AM
Either way, my take on it, is if you really need one? and YOU are the only one that can determine this,. Some women will always have that POOCH! and some will not,,, some of it is genetics and some of it is pure laziness.... after you get to where you want to be and if you STILL have a layer of skin hanging down and it is all skin, then I would suggest looking into a moderate tuck, not the whole shebang,,,, I have seen ladies that have lost so much weight that their skin had no more elasticity in it and they had to get tucks in various parts of their body, their skin just did not snap back! But Again, I stress, this is totally up to YOU,,,, do the research, go to a couple consultations and you make the decision, Best of luck sweetie!

I 2nd muscle mommy! Your too young to be thinking that unless your not going to have children again. I know before BFL all my friends said that we were all going to get tummy tucks when we were done having kids. But now seeing what BFL can do. No tummy tuck for me,

I'm from New Orleans, but now live in Mississippi
Anyway, Tai is soooooooooooo right,
BULL **** on the Tummy tuck, You look now, like I want to look like when I'm finished!!! You're beautiful and with just a tiny bit of work your tummy is going to be tight, flat and sexy. My stomach was way out there and I wasn't having a baby, it's was just fat and already after 18 weeks I have amazing results so I KNOW YOU WILL!!!!
you won't need a tummy tuck, that's for people that loose like way over 100 lbs and have loose skin, you skin is not loose and it won't get that way with proper BFL style Exercise and Diet.
Linda

sweetie you are alright! as you loose weight your tummy will appear flatter. I have had 2 big babies, stretch marks from h@ll and gone from size 18 to a 10. Yeah I could be anal and have surgery. the skin is a little loose but just wear clothes that don't cut in, in that area. As young as you are you should do just fine.

I weighed yesterday (1day after my freeday on saturday) and am really bummed out, I gained 2.5lbs. I knew I shouldnt have weighed, but my curiosity got the best of me. I am trying to put off weighing again until saturday AM (like usual), but I am having serious doubts about any improvement. I can tell myself its water weight, but Im still disappointed. I know I am getting stronger and I am only in my 3rd week, but I would like to see some kind of improvement in my numbers. Just need some motivation I guess. Thanks for listening:)
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1755 posts) at 09:37 AM
Weighing the day after free day is a recipe for disaster. Everyone weighs 2-5 heavier the next day.
Just don't do it.
Body for Life Forum Message by cheller (136 posts) at 09:44 AM
alert! alert! alert! don't weigh after free day!!! always the morning of. stay off of the scale at all cost until that day. i am also tempted by this very same thing daily but so far i have been able to refrain from stepping on the stupid thing until it is time for me to collect my newest measurements at the end of each week. in the past my thinking was "why didn't i lose any weight this week" and then i would just throw in the towel and give up. don't let this way of thinking get into your mind.
you are succeding. the results of all your hardwork are not just what the scale says. i know its been said a hundred times before but muscle does weigh more than fat.
keep your chin up and forget about what our socitiey says we should weigh. BFL is a tried and proven lifestyle change that has helped too many people to count.
you are strong and you will do it!!!! this is just one bad day out of 84.
Body for Life Forum Message by sloth501 (17 posts) at 09:46 AM
Focus on the postive changes you are seeing and forget the scale.
I have trouble following this advise as well because my weight is back up to where I started BFL but my BF% is down.
When I weighed myself on Sunday morniing, I was a little bummed out until I reminded myself of the changes I am seeing in my body and that the weight gain was muscle mass replacing fat...
Body for Life Forum Message by Marijayde (33 posts) at 09:50 AM
Urrrggggg the dreaded scale! I get on it ONLY for BFL tracker, my body likes to loose inches not pounds.
I cannot look to the scale for my encouragement, instead, I use being able to breath better in my pants. I use the amazement of feeling muscles in my body hurt that I never knew existed. I use pushing and hitting my 10's in my workouts. Then I look at my scale as I pass it and laugh out loud and say Take THAT!
SCREW the scale, LIVE your life!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (1597 posts) at 09:53 AM
AWWWW MAN!!!! No weighing after free day. Not only is that the most inaccurate weight but it only makes you feel awful. Wait until the morning of cheat day before you eat or drink anything. I guarantee if you keep this week clean, you will see a change for the better in the scale at that time :D
Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (13 posts) at 10:49 AM

Girlfriend, you NEVER weigh yourself after a FREEDAY,,, it is all water! Always weigh yourself the day prior to your free day and at the same time, I suggest first thing in the morning! That way it is consistent! good luck!
Body for Life Forum Message by Hoping for a lot (107 posts) at 12:27 PM
I weigh myself every morning and every night (I'm a scale addict). This week after my free day I was up 2 pounds, but it was gone 2 days later along with another 1/2 pound. It's hard not to let it get to you, but you have to remember that the scale isn't telling the whole story.

well i decided to give my life an overhaul, because i am turning the big 25. i feel kind of weird b/c i just kind of feel, this is it, no more being really young. i come from a traditional background and so many girls are getting married and having babies, or even buying their first house. i hold my breath to pay rent at times. i totally just don't feel like doing that. add to that credit card debt, having changed my profession after 5 years (i was gonna go to med school)and having no direction, taking classes, it is so stressful. does anyone have any advice, thanks! i am becoming too addicted to these boards.
to switch gears a bit, i have read a lot of diet programs and think that bfl is best and set to start in three weeks, just due to hectic scheduling. any advice on training for women.....i don't want to suffer any injuries...thanks!

So I'll say Welcome :) & as to advise ... grab the BFL book - if you haven't already -read it & then come ask what ever you need here! :)
Take care

Welcome dwellin
I am in week 4 of my C1 and I have also been weight-training for many years. Asking questions at the gym is a great way to learn. Also here are a couple things I've learned:
1. Don't be afraid of lifting too much weight. You will not turn into the Hulkette no matter how much you lift. :o)
2. Doing weights according to the BFL time schedule is very important. Short rests and controlled contractions build leaner muscles.
3. Don't forget to work the muscle in both directions, when it is contracting AND when releasing. Some of the most important muscle creation happens when you are releasing the contraction SLOWLY and making the muscle work to release the weight. Contract fast and relelase slow. Up for 1 and down for 3-6 counts.
4. As long as you can do the number of reps required, up your weight to reach the required intensity levels. It took me a couple weeks to realize what a "10" meant for me. I had never really pushed myself that hard before and was shy to. But once I did I saw that it is a safe amount of weight that won't cause injury but that totally pushes you so you can't do another rep.
Hope this helps and all the best. You can do it :o) And about your hectic life remember there may never be a perfect time to start so you may have to just MAKE it happen!! You won't regret it. I know when I started I had no idea how I was going to fit all this into my already 14 hour days. But it fit and it feels so good!!!

Welcome,
I'm not female, but Nancy Jane my wife most certainly IS. LOL.
If you can get the Body for Life Book, Please do so, best $$ you'll ever spend. Nancy & I are going by the book, and both of us are pleased with results to date.
We actually read and planned for about a week, and took that same week to get familiar with the gym and what exercises we were going to focus on , and to determine the amount of weight with which to start.
The 20's? Man that was half a lifetime ago!! LOL Nancy and I are working to be in the absolute best shape of our lives today. The 2o's were fun, but somewhat overrated and not very productive for me.

okay so to counter act the muscle loss I purposely had 2 freedays in a row. I'm hoping this will cause a good reaction today when I hit the gym. I do feel stronger and I also look a little more full (my muscles) then I did last week. So I'm thinkig this was a pretty good decision. Today I'm going to do my UBWO and I'm hoping to get some increase in weights and also a nice big "pump". Also I'll be slightly increasing my calories starting today as well. Wish me luck, I'll let you guys know how it went at the gym today.

It should probably help. I took about 4 1/2 free days in a row (Thurs - Mon) and felt extra strong this morning during my UBWO. Hope you feel it too.
Every time I go on a trip of any kind I totally can't control my eating. What's up with that?
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (1459 posts) at 11:39 AM
Jay -- was your "muscle loss" something you measured using calipers or a bodyfat scale, or were you eye-balling yourself in the mirror and believed you saw "smaller muscles"?
It makes sense to me that if you are carb-depleted and have no glycogen stored in your muscles, you might look "smaller" because the glycogen stores water and helps fill out the muscle tissue (from a visual standpoint).
That comes into play when it's time for competitors (or BFL hard-core folks) to "pump up" for their final photos/competitions. They go through a complicated process of dehydration/carb depletion/sodium reduction, then carb-load and lift heavy to swell the muscles again.
ANYWAY ... just wanted to try to give you a boost if you were only "seeing" muscle loss and not truly experiencing it. :-)

I don't want to be the food police but just don't go overboard with it as a lot of those fat free things have high fructose corn syrup in them as one of the first ingredients...not too good for the waistline but in moderation, probably ok. Just my 2 cents.
Body for Life Forum Message by Hoping for a lot (107 posts) at 12:15 PM
I also use Helmans lite. I can't stand fat free, so I go for the lite.
Body for Life Forum Message by fat_to_firm (35 posts) at 12:20 PM
I usually only put 1 tbs. of it in 1 can of water packed tuna. I didn't think it would hurt, but I value everyone's opinion. Thanks for all of the feedback! :)

yep, 1 tbs is fine!! In fact, just finished eating my sandwich with 1 tbs miracle whip lite, turkey and spinach leaves..yum!

this may sound gross to you, but i don't mayo and have never liked tuna so i put a little mustard and pickle relish in my tuna and eat it that way.
Body for Life Forum Message by fat_to_firm (35 posts) at 02:35 PM
I like pickle relish in my tuna as well.(with the fat free miracle whip) I do not like sweet relish in my tuna at all. I will have to try the mustard thing! :)

I now love mustard better than mayo in my tuna also. Someone suggested it ayear ago and Ithought it sounded gross. But then she made me take a taste of her sandwich and I never went back.

Well... As you may have noticed, I haven't updated my stats for the past few weeks. I finally did this week, including some new pictures.
I've never fallen hard off the program, but I have been eating larger portions and sometime un-BFL foods... This happens almost exclusively during lunchtime for me.
I almost never cheat much on my cheat day, and I dont skip workouts (even when out of town). Many of you also know that I took up cycling in March as extra cardio/workout as well (Did over 200 miles in the past 2 weeks).
I continue to praise the program, because I do find that maintaining on it is very easy.... and I do know that it works for weight loss WHEN YOU ARE DEDICATED.
However, this has been my problem the past 2 months or so. I partially blame it on the fact that I moved to a new office, and I dont have a "kitchen" yet. I am working on the cabinets, and have the fridge here now... so I won't have that excuse for long! Then I can start making better foods, eating in, and saving money. If nothing else, it will be an excuse no more.
What does this all mean? Well, I'm not quite sure :) I still have quite a way to go for my personal goals in regards to my body fat, and haven't minded so much that it's taken a bit longer then I wanted... given that I know I'm not giving the program 100%.
Thanks to all those that express their issues, their resolutions, and continued support for each other.

Here..take my hand and jump back on.
What are you currently eating for lunch? Do you have any shops/restaurants locally where you could buy authorised foods?
Anything that distracts you from your routine can shake you up a little, but you have to stay motivated and find ways to work around these setbacks.
It will be hard - BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE!! Stop making excuses and start finding ways to make little changes over the next few days that will help you get back on track.
We're here for you if you need us

Versa Climber?! I thought the step mill was the big stairs ...
Hmmm ... we don't have a versa climber at my gym, but the step mill (four steps that rotate like an escalator) kicked my butt when I gave it a long workout two weeks ago).
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1755 posts) at 11:42 AM
Well, I had the opposite this morning.
The girls from the gym didn't show up to OPEN the damn place until 7am - 30 minutes late!
On Tuesdays I have to start work at 745 - so that only gave me extremely limited time to get my workout in today.
I did some weights instead of HIIT - and I'll be heading back to the gym after work to get my HIIT in.
Damn unreliable staff! Doesn't happen when the manager works mornings I tell you!

Whenever I go out of town I can't stop eating junk! Anyone else run into this problem? I went to Denver from Thursday through Monday for work. My wife came with and we went out to eat every night and I definitely didn't make sensible choices. Each night dinner consisted of an appetizer, main course and definitely dessert. Anyone ever see the brownie sundae at Cheesecake Factory? I ate my piece of cheesecake and my wife's brownie sundae. It was enormous. If you saw it, you would be shocked.
Any way, now that I'm back home, I seem to be back on track.
Body for Life Forum Message by Cheetara (1459 posts) at 11:44 AM
Papa Love ... you are going to have a REALLY, REALLY hard time "controlling" your eating while your wife's pregnant. Not because she will be oinking out on junk necessarily, but because (if you're anything like me and my hubby) she'll be eating a lot more frequently and probably a lot more quantity, which will make YOU want to eat the same way. :-)
Who knows -- pregnancy hormones are so strong maybe you are affected by them, too.
Edit addition: Sorry I ignored the point of your question ... I don't have an answer for that. :-) I know that I can't ride five minutes in the car without having something to drink -- perhaps it's a habit you've gotten into and will have to work hard at breaking.
Learn to love your veggies, my friend, because you'll need something relatively benign to gnosh on ...
:-)

When I go out of town I take a jump rope, exercise bands and a core ball(inflate it at the hotel. Get a good band.
I can do:
1) curls (w/bands)
2) straight up rows (w/bands).
3) Shoulder presses (....)
4) situps/crunches
5) Jump rope for cardio.
6) back extensions (core ball or bands)
7) core ball crunches..
I think you can do a lot of this stuff without your ankle..
I find that when my workouts don't stop.. My motivation doesn't stop either...
Body for Life Forum Message by Lovey75 (292 posts) at 01:51 PM
I still did my workout. I did upper body on Friday morning at the hotel. They had some nice equipment and a nice selection of dumbbells.
The problem: I feel like I'm on vacation, well I am, but I think I can eat like there is no tomorrow.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2660 posts) at 01:57 PM
I'm a little worried about that with my upcoming vacation. I'm going to Florida for a week next month. The good thing is I know I will eat plenty of fresh seafood, and I have no problem ordering it grilled or broiled. The bad news is the desserts, which I know I will be faced with, and which will be very very very hard to avoid. We are renting a condo, so we will have a full kitchen and I plan on filling the fridge with fresh fruit, cottage cheese, veggies, and other good stuff for breakfasts and midmeals. I'd bring bars, but I'm going to be on a beach... not very heat-friendly! So I plan on doing the best I can and not beating myself up afterwards, but it IS something that is on my mind.
Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (364 posts) at 02:01 PM
No, you CAN control your eating, you're choosing not to. That probably sounds harsh, but no one is forcing you to make bad decisions. You may need to rethink why you are doing this. Eating that way when you have to go out of town will put a real damper on your progress. If you ARE on vacation, that's one thing and you should enjoy it but if it's business trips you really need to stay focused and stop telling yourself that you can't control it. It is in you to conquer that.
Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (1035 posts) at 02:16 PM
Supergirl is right. If you tell yourself you can't control it you run the danger of turning that into fact. If you're not going to stay on program while you're on vacation, make that a conscious decision. It is not the end of the world to consciously decide you're taking a break. It is not the end of your challenge if you take a break. Just don't try to fool yourself.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1755 posts) at 02:22 PM

Lovey, I am going to print something out that Larry put on the BFL guestbook yesterday. He thinks of this everytime he wants a glazed donut. It is the autobiography of Portia Nelson in 5 short chapters.
I
I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost. I am helpless. It isn't my fault. It takes forever to find a way out.
II
I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don't see it. I fall in again. I can't believe I am in the same place. But, it isn't my fault. It still takes a long time to get out.
III
I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I still fall in. It's a habit. My eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately.
IV
I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it.
V
I walk down another street...
So the next time you are confronted with a glazed donut what will you do? Choice 4 or 5 would be best, you should probably walk away from it or choose a healthier food.

I think it easy to think that making an exception in your eating won't really matter. And yes, what's a few calories. But, what can really make a difference is changing your focus from "How can I do my best?" to "What can I get away with?". Trust me, it's the change of focus that's a killer, not the calories!
I take the approach of thinking that every single meal and workout makes a difference...because it does!
Glad you're getting back on track...

You might check your breathing. Alot of people tend to hold there breath when they lift without even realizing it. Either that or you are really tensing those neck muscles, and in that case concentrate on relaxing your neck while lifting. :)

I have been having migraines off and on since about 2-3 weeks ago but it might be my blood pressure, if though it is not high, with me having circulation issues in my calves, it might have something to do with it, I usually take some tynenol and take a few "quiet minutes" to myself and that usually takes care of it! And I concur with the breathing, it is a very important part when exercising! Got to get o2 to the muscles!

Trying to gag that down, I think I will take the meat off and just eat a veggie sand. Has anyone had this problem? I am not even hungry either. I normally use the elliptical machine when doing my HITT, my question, is it better to concentrate on speed for your 10 or use more resistance with less speed for your 10. What is everyone doing for their HITT. Thanks!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2660 posts) at 12:51 PM
I haven't done it on an elliptical yet, but I think it would be a combination of both. You just need to challenge yourself as much as you can!
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (1755 posts) at 12:53 PM
For the first challenge I upped the speed - this time I am upping the resistance.
Both are great workouts that challenge you in completely different ways - however, as long as you are hitting those intervals either way works fine :)
Body for Life Forum Message by ready2lose (7 posts) at 12:58 PM
I use the Eliptical for my HIIT workout also. I have found that I up the level once for each minute and try the up the speed as well. Then lower the level back down as well as my speed! All I know is by minute 19-20 I am at level 10 trying to maintain 80rpm's for me this is definately a "10"!!!! Good luck and just play with it, as long as you are pushing it, you'll know if you hit the 10's!!
Steph
Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (1035 posts) at 01:22 PM

Body for Life Forum Message by jbuffettfan (60 posts) at 01:18 PM
It's the sweat most likely, I took my daughter to the dermatologist the other day for breakouts on the top of her back and he said it is from sports and sweating. He gave her some medicine for it and a wash to use.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2660 posts) at 01:18 PM
I can't be sure about this, but I think initially yeah, your body is getting rid of a lot of toxins and the water is helping that happen. But my skin has gotten clearer since doing BFL and drinking all of this water, so hopefully it will clear up soon for all of you. :)

I think that is his last name and you can find it online at CORESECRETS.com and I love it, it really works all areas of your ABS and the other thing is your DIET, it has to be clean or it won't matter what you do, they won't show!

I have done so many Challenges I am now tailoring my workouts to what my body responds too,, I still do the pyramid system with the weights, sometimes I go the opposite direction and start heavy and go down.... Right now, I am doing 3 days on, 1 off and the off day, I swim. I rest on my free day and that is it... YES, I did Core Secrets on Weight days and that was 3 days a week, toward the end of my last challenge I did them every other day unless they were sore!
Body for Life Forum Message by Heathergettinbuff (118 posts) at 02:48 PM
cool thanks for the help. i need to get at least another challenge under my belt so i know what my body responds to before i change anything. the only modification i made to the program is the numbers 15,12,10,8,15. i have a ball already, i suppose i could just incorporate an ab workout for weight days using my ball.
i definately think getting a gym membership will help, i think im getting a little bored with what i have availible at home with my bench and treadmill. i think that will be my reward at the end of the challenge.

i was looking through the profiles the other day and a thought came to mind. you know how when someone makes it really famous and then all of a sudden a nude photo shows up of them when they were younger and never thought they would make it??? has anyone else ever thought about what the reaction would be to a before picture if by chance they became really famous one day? i could see it now, People, US, and Inside Entertainment covering the big story.
i know, i have crazy thoughts but what can i say.

Can you guys give me thoughts on reconciling this new book to the original that we're all so dang addicted to?

This is C1 week 8 and I have to tell you I really work up a sweat. The thing is I take a shower after my workout because I go to the gym at lunch (it’s really close and I can take a little extra time at lunch). But I sweat for at least a good half hour or more after. I’ve tried using powder, I’ve tried making my shower a little bit colder towards the end, I just don’t know what else to do. I’m not smelly, but it drips down my back.
Any suggestions?

What I do is put a towel you know the lil one on my back under my shirt for the time after the SHIIT. it works if you are sitting strait in your chair with your back against the chair, or if you are like me,,, the towel sticks! lol

congratulations!!!!! you're burning fat "after" your workout :)~ One thing that I've noticed since eating the BFL way is I don't have BO anymore. I'm not all nervous when I sweat now that I'm going to clear the room. Also it really cools me down at work. I wouldn't sweat it HA HA HA I kill me lol

I go to the gym early, come home to shave, shower, etc. By the time I get all my clothes on and start out door, the 'sweats' fire up again. I jump in the car and crank up the AC before I need another shower!

I'll try the towel thing.
It's a very manic thing though isn't it? I know it's because I'm buring fat and I as I feel it dripping down my back I'm so excited that I'm practically jumping out of my seat, but at the same time I'm embarrased. I'll get over that though as I shrink.

I was just wondering what eating cleans really means.
I eat only athorized foods but I think some people on the board take a step further.
Like someone was saying how they want a six pack and someone else said you have to eat really clean.
So what does eating clean consist of. Do you still take a free day? Thanks
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (2660 posts) at 04:31 PM
Eating clean means only eating authorized foods during non-free days. No nibbles, no cheats, just staying on plan. But yes, free days are still included.
Body for Life Forum Message by Blondeambyshun (16 posts) at 04:39 PM
Eating clean to me is just strictly limiting bars or anything with high sugar, salt and/or flour content. I've found that not eating any kind of RTD shake or bars (except when I need to, about 2 or 3 times/week) have helped me a little too. I also eat more natural foods, but spice them up with a packet of splenda, cinnamon or pepper. I heard Mrs dash is good too. I still take a free day, but I'm beginning to think just taking 2 or 3 free meals would be better. Hope this helps a little..
PS...whole foods always seem to be a prefered choice.

Well it is that time again for promotions for the Military and yet AGAIN, I was overlooked for promotion to E-8! Which is Senior Chief... The highest you can go is Master Chief or E-9. I am presently an E-7 or Chief Petty Officer! I get so aggravated at the process, and I know in my heart that I deserve to be promoted but this is not a gender friendly career sometimes. Yes, I am tough and very honest,, but I feel that I have done more than was ever expected of me and yet again, I am not advanced and I am getting PISSED OFF.... If you didn't know, there is an extremely fine line between aggressive and abbrasive and it is separated by your sexual organs! And I KNOW that I have bigger "Cojones" than most men! And I think that is what causes the most trouble!
Sorry, but that is how I feel,, Had to get it off my chest! WhEEEEEW! Now I feel better! ;)-

That must be real tough. Especially since you've been there for many years.
Unfortunately women who choose to have a career in a male dominated proffession always have to work twice as hard to prove their worth and I'm speaking from the heart. Being an engineer and one of only two women in a company of over 100 employees is always a challenge, but all that matters to me is the fact that I know I'm bloody good at what I do and I can do it just as good as any man.
Don't let it get to you BB your time will come one day.

I'm sorry to hear your news. My step-father is in the Navy and has been passed over for Senior and Master...for political (office politics) reasons...you know what I'm talking about. And it doesn't matter that he works longer and harder and better than anyone else up for promotion...he just doesn't get involved in the b.s. and because of that he's been held back.
Keep your chin up...you're a force to be reckoned with and you'll get your glory in one way or t'other.
Take care,

First, before I irritate anyone, let me pass on my condolences and sadness for your disappointment. Having participated in that advancement system, I know the disappointment associated with finding one’s name low on the advancement list; far below the cutoff.
That being said, please let me preface my words with the following facts. I like Booty Babe a lot. I respect her even more. Not only for the dedication shown in her Navy career but in her BFL efforts. She’s also a class act! Okay, now that you know that I mean no harm or personal attack in my thoughts, here goes.
The military has been transformed into a social experiment where diversity and ‘touchy-feely’ is more important than the mission and performance. I find it difficult (not impossible, but difficult) that gender would be the discriminating factor for missing an advancement. Today’s military supervisors are fearful of offending anyone that the military defines as a ‘minority’… ie, female in this case. Having supervised many female sailors in my time (some good, some bad, some great), I know for a fact that performance was the critical factor in evaluations. Gender never, EVER entered into my thoughts. True, some people that I believed to be ‘less deserving’ got advanced and those I believe to be outstanding performers missed out, but there were other factors that played into the determination.
Additionally, I remember sitting on advancement boards and I was FORCED (lawful order) to justify the reasons behind why EVERY ‘minority’ that did not earn the advancement. Only ‘minorities’ received this special treatment and that, by definition, is discrimination. But the reasoning behind this demand was to cover their own butts if anyone brought up discrimination charges. Again, touchy-feely was more important than performance.
Booty, should you be disappointed? Yes! You believe that you earned that advancement and you are now hurt that you won’t get it. My heart goes out to you. But, and I write this with respect… is it truly a case of sexual discrimination? And if it is, why not use the sexual discrimination system to bring official charges against those that remain decades behind the current culture?
I hope I did not hurt your feelings. You know that is NOT my intent. But, if this is a true case of discrimination, tolerating the discrimination will not solve the problem. Tolerating improper actions is a silent endorsement of those actions. Sometime the proper path to walk is the more difficult path. You’re standing at a fork in the road. Which path will you take?

As a fellow female with "balls" enough to stand up for what is right ( and get called a b*tch about it...but if I was a guy, I would be cool..you know the deal), I understand how you feel. I am also ex-military and this is one reason why I am EX military, but I still do work for the Federal Government. I KNOW you kick ass, know your sh*t. I also know that it intimidates the hell out of a lot of people. Well... oh well. YOU ARE ONE HELL OF A STRONG WOMAN!! If they don't want to promote you...definitely their loss. Yes...I can understand the disappointment. If I could promote YOU, I would!! You just stick to your guns, stay strong, and as they have...good things will come your way. Perhaps this is a sign that when you retire (is that possible for such a young woman, so soon??), you will be the exercise diva...Bootylicious?? I THINK SO!!!

I just want to know how others have overcome (if they have had this problem) not sticking to your plan.
I feel like I cannot believe or trust myself to start and finish this in twelve weeks.
I start off with a BANG then after three days stop or cheat.

i cant give much advice because i cant stick with it 100% either. however, many people have told me that this is body for LIFE...so, if you cheat or miss a workout, just jump back up and start fresh the next day or meal. dont stress out over a few bumps in the road. just keep going. this board is great for support. youre doing the right thing by asking for help.

The biggest help to a lot of us is keep coming here.
Another thing is if you have a bad day don't beat yourself uf about it - start the next day as if it didn't happen.
One other thing is plan - if you write down what you will eat and when you will work out it's a lot easier to stick with it than winging it.

I have started and stopped just about every diet plan there is, including BFL (which isn't really a diet plan, but you know what I mean). But this board made all the difference and I actually finished 12 weeks. Post here. A lot. Ask for help. If you cheat, get rid of the rest of the cheat food (if there is any left), brush yourself off, and keep going. If you feel like stopping, ask for help. Make it harder for yourself to cheat. And did I mention posting here? Yeah, do that. A lot. :)
Welcome to Tracker, by the way!

I struggle with motivation myself. But like the previous posters have said, if you fall down, get back up and keep on going. I lamed out during week 4, but I got right back up and started week 5 like it had never happened.
Also, I want to add this: If you want a DRAMATIC transformation you will have to give it everything you have. Focus is the key. However, I, at this point, am not interested in a DRAMATIC transformation. I just want to transform: eat healthy and exercise consistently. So, I don't always exercise to the point of exhaustion and I don't eat whole grains or many fruits, etc. I still eat the 5-6 meals a day and I try to keep it lowfat and I am controlling my portions, but you see what I'm getting at overall. I am taking my time and easing into this program. Otherwise I would burn out quickly. I want this to be for life, not for just 12 weeks. As I progress with each 12 week period, my intensity will increase. But for right now, I am doing what I can. What that has turned out to be is, consistent exercise and consistent eating right. So I consider myself successful. So, if you are intimidated or overwhelmed by the intensity of the program, then tone it down for now and work your way into it. Build up the intensity. Once you have some new habits in place, upping the intensity will be a lot easier. You'll be able to focus on that. I don't know about you, but I can't focus on too many things at the same time or I just give up everything.
I also agree that PLANNING, PLANNING and MORE PLANNING are vital and essential to keeping on track. Have contingency plans in place in case something comes up that might set you off course.
And, yes, come here for the great support and insight.
Best wishes,
:)

Welcome Jessica! Glad you're back on BFL.
I don't have enough info to really get a good feel for where you are at so I thought I'd throw out a couple of ideas that came to mind...
- Are you excited about your goals? I find that when I FEEL really excited about my goals, staying on track becomes a lot easier. If you find that you have to push yourself to stay on track, see if you can set some goals that really thrill you!
- How do you feel about yourself as a person? Do you like who you are? If you have a negative image of yourself, it will often prevent you from ever excelling at anything consistently. Either deep down you don't feel you deserve it or you interpret any bumps in the road as proof that you are a failure, and you quit.
Hang in there and keep coming here...
BTW -- You sure are a pretty girl!
Kerry -- Thanks for the compliment!

Had the same problem had to crawl around for a week. Been about 3 years now turned down the surgery option. I bought an inversion chair. Hanging upside down for 20 minutes a day has stopped all the pain. However I am very careful when doing any back exercises and standing curls.

I too visit the Chiro...she uses a tool that looks like a syringe called an activator - much easier than a twist and crack adjustment. It is fabulous. This used to happen to me every other month or so. I would take a Epsom salt bath (as hot as I could stand it), and sleep with a pillow between my knees. It would take about a week to get moving. Did your Chiro adjust you? I've also found that the Chiro pillow has helped me extend the time between visits...It was quite expensive, but I would pay double now I know. I feel for you. Remember to take it easy until you're better.

I would like some advice from folks that have lost or are loosing over 100lbs. My fiance started at 377. He has no other health problems except from his accident, his abdomen burst open when he was squashed by a big tv that fell on him from 3 stories up. He was told for so long that he couldn't do anything physical. I need help to understand some of the problems you face attempting to loose weight. Exercise is so difficult, it has to be done in short sessions. His eating is pretty clean and he is eating smaller portions several times a day instead of his one big monster meal. He feels healther but gets so tired so fast and so frustrated with it. May I have some of your point of views of what you've been thru? Thanks y'all.
Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (1035 posts) at 04:30 PM
Ouch! That sounds like a nasty accident.
I can relate to getting tired quickly. When I was really heavy I couldn't sustain any activity very long, and when I exerted myself I could feel my heart pounding in my ears. I was scared to exercise for fear I'd have a heart attack.
When I started out at 280, I got tired walking my son to school in the morning and picking him up afterwards. It was about a 10-15 minute walk each way. I started slow, but worked up to doing moderate intervals during the portion of the walk when I was alone. Not HIIT, but when I felt comfortable I'd speed it up for a short while, give myself a goal--speedwalk to the next stop sign--then let myself recover until I got that urge to step it up again. It had to come from inside myself, though. I had to set my own pace. After a while I switched to a stationary bike I got from my sister. I'd sit on it while watching my favorite show. I gave myself a quota of 30 minutes on the bike if I did it all at once or 40 minutes if I did it in two sessions of 20 minutes each. Again, I gave myself little intervals. If I felt an energy boost I used it. If I didn't feel an energy boost I just chugged away. After about a month of that I joined a gym. I did the Nautilus circuit 3x a week and about 30 minutes of treadmill. I started out level, but as my condition improved I added a little incline. After a few weeks I worked up to being able to use the Fat Burn mode. Also after a few weeks I tried out the elliptical machine which kicked my butt. I could not work it fast enough or hard enough to keep the electronics going, so I gave it up for several months. However, my general physical condition gradually improved to the point that I could not get my heart rate high enough on the treadmill without running (which I had problems with because of weight, incontinance, balance etc) so I gave the elliptical another try. It was hard, but over the course of a week I improved greatly, and pretty much switched to that completely for my cardio.
Now I'm finally back on the treadmill, and running! It feels mighty good. I did the fit test not too long ago and scored as "Elite." And no heart pounding in my ears.
I'm glad your fiance is making a start. You have to start somewhere, and that somewhere is where you are. He doesn't need to kill himself with exercise. He doesn't need to take himself beyond his limits. Just take it a little farther than is comfortable each time, and the limits will expand.
I hope this helps.
It is doable! It's not easy, but it's not as hard as our fears suggest.

...uh, what she said! lol!
But seriously, OMG, that accident sounds horrible! Stomach bursting! SHEESH!
Um, I started at over 400 lbs. I couldn't do much physically at that weight. But, I did start. At first it was a 10 min walk, then a 15 min walk, then a 20 min walk, etc. After about 6 months I am now able to do a 20 minute HIIT and walk another 10 minutes after that (and could walk 45 minutes total if I pushed it). I do a modified ST program, as I cannot yet do the high intensity pyramiding. But I will get there.
The biggest mistake I made was when I was not consistent. Once I started doing exercise regularly, I was able to progress further. Last year I started martial arts and GRADUALLY worked myself up to 3 hours a day 4 times a week of intense training. And this was at nearly 400 lbs. I obviously didn't start out at that intensity, but when I stopped being consistent and then quit for 6 months, I lost all that I had gained as far as endurance.
Again, start slowly, gradually increase intensity and the endurance WILL come!
Best wishes to the both of you.
:)

Never had that experience, WOW.
The folks above are right, gotta start somewhere, and gradually increase.
After my brain anuersym ( ruptured Feb 2001- damn near killed me )I was afraid to even sneeze for quite some time. I literally felt I would blow my brains out! LOL. However, medical advice at the time was no heavy lifting or intense workouts, moderate cardio. Well, everyone starts somewhere.( remember Doctors offer best conventional advice and wisdom, but are not oracles) Gradually, strength, endurance and self confidence will improve. Currently I've gotten to my personal peak physical condition, teenage years included.
Go slow, monitor carefully, and succeed.

Well, as of today, I've gone from 330lbs last November to 220lbs...110 lbs down!!!
I feel for your fiance and for you. He's lucky to have such a caring partner...
I can tell you things that I did and hope that it helps him...
First, it is critical to understand that being so heavy brings along with it sadness and grief. It is important to validate and grieve that loss. However, it is also important to keep an empowered focus at the same time!
- Focus on and get excited about what you CAN do instead of what you can't do...
- Find some way every day to feel a little joy and excitement in your life.
- It's important to focus on the DIRECTION of your life, and not necessarily where you are at... Like a soldier in boot camp, if you only focus on the grueling pain you're training is putting you through, you will not make it...You must instead focus on the incredible soldier you will become and accept that there are no shortcuts to achieving something so valuable...
- Create and maintain an image/identity of yourself that empowers you, not one that drags you down...You have to take charge of how you feel about yourself because your body will move towards the identity/image you have of yourself. I made sure to think of myself as 'an athlete who just happens to be overweight right now' rather than 'a fat loser' or something destructive.
- Along with the big long-term goals, set numerous short-term goals that EXCITE you . And when you achieve each one, make sure you enjoy the Hell out of them!!! For example, when I finally was able to walk out to my van a couple hundred feet away without hurting, that was exciting!!! Sometimes at the end of a successful BFL day, I'll just take in the joy of the moment and say "Way to go buddy! You're on your way!"
- Find some way to enjoy the journey! every workout...every meal...every day...
- Always have an attitude of gratitude...look for things to be grateful for every day...they are all around you and that's a great way to add joy to your everyday life
- Be careful of the questions you ask yourself. Questions such as "Why do I always mess up!" just drag you down...a better question "How can I do better?" will lead to a better answer...
- Treat yourself as you would a child learning to walk or an elderly person who needs your help...Just as you would them, be kind, caring and thoughtful and treat yourself with respect...There's a hurting child in you that needs to be taken care of...don't let him down...
I hope this helps... For me, I have believed all along that my challenges with chronic illness and obesity were part of God's plan for my life...that I was in 'spiritual boot camp', training to become the kind of 'soldier' God wanted me to be and the kind of man I always dreamed of being...

So here I am, in the last week of my first challenge, and for the first time I'm having some real challenges. Up until now, this entire thing has gone so smoothly.
I missed my last cardio last week, and missed the first one this week. I did get my LBWO in on Monday, and my UBWO today. It's for different reasons, but I hate that I have done so well, only to stumble coming in to the finish line.
To top it all off, I seem to be tempted every two seconds to eat poorly. I have done so well and faced very little desire to cheat. Suddenly, every time I turn around, I want a cookie or a piece of pie.
In spite of it all, I've done very well. I haven't had the amazing transformation I was hoping for, but I think that's because I didn't hit the cardio as hard as I should have for the first 6 weeks or so. I thought I was, but now, looking back, I realize I could have worked harder. In spite of that, I have lost 12% body fat, 2 inches from my chest measurements, one from my abs, and I have a waist again. I dropped two pants sizes (16 to 12) and I feel better than I have in years and years.
I am going to take a week off from it all, then settle, for a while, into a program of eating well and exercising. I won't actually be doing a "Challenge." My two youngest daughters are coming for a month during this summer, and I don't want to spend the time with them worrying about every piece of food that touches my face. Instead, I'm going to focus on getting the 6 meals and drinking the water. I'm also going to keep exercising six days a week. My 2nd challenge will start August 3rd or so. If I slip a little between now and then, I'm not going to take it too hard. Just brush myself off and go back at it.
Mainly, I want to say thanks to everyone here. I couldn't have done this without this site. That's a fact. Coming here and reading and hanging out just made it easier to believe in myself. Thank you, everyone! Now, let's go hit those tens!!!

Great job on an awesome challenge! Your post made me think of something...I wonder if it would be better for females to time the end of a challenge for a certain date. I just know in my personal experience that right before aunt flo, i want to eat much more and my weight goes up a little. So if I timed the end of my challenge to be a week after my period, maybe that would help.
Anyone have any thoughts??

Body for Life Forum Message by Blondeambyshun (16 posts) at 10:55 PM
I'm going into week 10 this week, but when I started on this site, I didnt know that I could put my first challenge pics on here from about three years ago. Also, i'm waiting to use for film before I take pictures, so that I can see them right away. I think I feel somewhat afraid of not seeing changes if I take them sooner as well.
Body for Life Forum Message by Clover (205 posts) at 11:25 PM
Blondeambyshum - The requirements of the challenge is only that you complete 12 consecutive weeks so go an extra week longer. You photos have to be only twelve weeks from beginning to end.

Please continue to hang out here. I really have enjoyed your posts and your support has meant a lot to me.
Enjoy your time off but please be careful not to undo any of the great improvements you have made.
My prayer for you is that you come back in August as giddy as a kid - raring to go and excited about giving it everything you've got!

OK, I just have to share!
I pulled a pair of pants out of the dryer this morning - a pair that I bought when my "fat clothes" were getting tight. The same pair that then got TIGHT and was one of several knocks up-side the head to get my rear in gear and change the lifestyle and pull the book of the shelf and DO this program.
Anyway - I pulled them out of the dryer this morning and when I put them on instead of being tight and loosening up - THEY WERE ALREADY LOOSE!!! Yeah!!!
Sorry for shouting, but I'm so happy to see some progress in the clothes. It was a great morning!

I've had a very stressful 4-5 days at work and put in lots of hours, and my Myoplex bars and RTD shakes got me through it without cheating. I had no time to prepare meals, and all of my 5-6 meals were bars or shakes. I did miss a few workouts, but I'm not going to beat myself up over it. I'm just going to start up again tomorrow and forget about the missed workouts. I hope that it won't slow my progress much, but I realize that this is a program for life, and that life is unpredictable and sh*t happens. I just wanted to post here because this way I've documented my commitment to start working out again tomorrow. It'll give me an extra incentive to wake up early for my workout.
Body for Life Forum Message by rctneal (9 posts) at 05:58 PM
I so understand where you are coming from! I know that "real food" is better than a bar or RTD, but when it is one of those or something from the evil vending machine because my phone is ringing off the hook and my boss won't leave me alone long enough to go to the bathroom - I am soooo glad I have a stash of those bars and RTD's.
I am new to this and not a big planner, but I know my weaknesses and I'm trying to have other options to reach for.
Just keep reminding yourself that it's not called Body for 12 weeks for a reason!

The one thing I don't like about the cross trainer, is that putting the resistance up doesn't increase the distance traveled per stride.
Like the stationary bike for instance - the higher the resistance on a bike, the further each pedal actually takes you - just like using gears.
ANYWAY - usually in 20 minutes, I get around 1.7-1.8 miles.
This morning I was really rushed at the gym, so I promised myself I would do my HIIT after work. I hate going after work, but I did it.
Then at the gym, I'm talking to myself like I usually do, and really didn't feel like doing my HIIT - so I said, ok, do one interval and see how you feel. And I did it.
After I did one, I told myself, do one more, and one more. And I did it.
I also decided to even up my rpms thinking I couldn't keep up this pace with that kind of resistance. But I did it.
To make a long story short - I did my level 7,8,9,10,11 and 16 - AND I managed to do 2.02 miles in 20 minutes!
I can honestly say that I worked harder at my HIIT today than I ever have - EVER. Not bad for someone trying to make excuses along the entire way :D

And since muscle weights more than fat - then you are doing all the right things!
Body for Life Forum Message by RJA733 (151 posts) at 06:50 PM
its ALL about fat loss. take weight loss out of your mind. Fat loss is your objective. Unless you are an olympic wrestler who needs to make weight. but if you are like 99 percent of people on here you want to look better naked! So as long as you are losing fat and maintaining or gaining muscle you are doing just fine.
Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (829 posts) at 08:12 PM
Trust me! The fat weight is already coming off!
However, if you would stop building so much dang muscle and adding lean weight the scale might go downa it more...but who want that?!
Seriously, I understand your frustration. But, I bet your measurements would show impressive progress even though your scale has been 'stuck'.
Please post your pictures and measurements every 4 weeks or so! It will really help you and give you better feedback on your overrall progress.

Hi gang!
For quite a few years now, I've noticed that when I try to have a conversation about fitness with most of my friends my age (50), it usually doesn't get anywhere. They usually interupt, change the topic or tune out. But my younger friends are usually quite interested in my progress and we often have great discussions. I have found myself moving closer to them and further away from the the 'old farts'...
Being on this board and making such special friends here has brought things to a head. I realize that for years I have been dying to express myself but too often found the wall was a better audience than those people I considered my closest friends - and at least the wall wouldn't interupt or change the subject!
Yep! Time to make a change... Perhaps, I have more of a need for my friends to listen because I don't have a partner and haven't for quite a few years. Yeah, that's gotta figure into the scheme of things...But even when that time comes and I finally find a special woman to share my life with I still need to have friends that I can truly connect with. It's not healthy to have your spouse be the only person in the world you can talk to...
So I've decided that I will not continue to invest in those friendships where the other person is not willing to do the same. And to quit trying so hard to connect with people who don't accept me for who I am and who treat me as a 'naive dreamer who refuses to grow up'... You guys have made it clear that I don't have to settle for that - and that I shouldn't!
I'm not necessarily going to ditch these friends, but when I go camping by myself and have a better time than when they come along, it's obvious that something must change... In a nutshell, I've raised my standards for myself and my friendships and lowered my expectations of them...
Don't get me wrong, I will leave the door open for them but they are the ones who have to walk through it - I can't do their part for them...But they have been dragging me down or should I say TRYING - and I won't let anyone stop me from becoming the man that I truly believe God is leading me to become...
It is so common that when you rebuild your body, that you will have to make other changes in order to have long-term success in BFL. I'm sure many of you have friends who were more comfortable with you before you started BFL. But if succeeding in BFL results in you feeling somewhat distant from those friends, you can be sure that raising your standards for yourself will only lead to having better and more fulfilling relationships than clinging to someone that you know deep down you can't ever be that close to...

Hi Slim Jim,
I'm not quite sure what to say. I have found that personal fitness is quite a bit like money ( I'm self employed as a financial planner ), in that it is highly personal, and people tend to get quite defensive. Having said that, I agree that time invested with friends and family should be returned, and if that is not happening to your satisfaction, then your approach is right- not slamming doors on existing relationships, but merely opening doors, and investing in other more fullfilling relationships! The best of both worlds.
My door is open,
Yours in health,
Kerry

Jim, Good dissission!! I feel the same way, My friends say oh that's nice and yea you look good, but when they start talking about how fat and out of shape they are and then I try to give a little info on BFL, it's like I am tuned out! I heard every excuse in the book and I somethimes feel like I am being put down because as they put it, I don't do anything else but exercise all day. That tends to tick me off. I don't ex all day, I make time to ex. I take time to prepare what I'm going to eat, I don't like the feeling of being laughed at when I pull out my protien bar, banana etc and told who great their greasy french fries are and just a few won't kill me.
I said this before so you may remember this story, my friend that we worked out together everyday for like 2 years, quit ex with me, because she didn't want to ex everyday, and didn't want to deprive her self of the foods she loved, now her new excuse is, I can't keep up with you.
Last week I said lets walk together, she said I thought you said you run, I said, Well I try to run and then walk and run again but I'll just walk , it will be so much more fun if we can do it together, and she yea it would be but I probably couldn't keep up with you even walking anymore, you just too too much with this ex stuff.
After more excuses she said it was too hot to walk and her BP was high again.
then went into telling me how it was ashame for me to do all this work just to gain it all back in a few months. Whe I said, I've made a change in my life style I'm not just on a diet, she said, Linda, everybody gains it back,
Well I'm tired of being with people that make me feel like I am loosing the batle when it's obvious that I am winning!
I am very lucky. My husband, encourges me all the way, non stop, even reminds me, baby it's been 3 hrs since you ate something , do you want me to fix something for you to eat? He is wonderful, but he won't exercise, never has like it and never will, so I don't bug him about it, but he is active and does try to eat healthy. So anyway, I have Bill and I have you guys out there and I pretend you are all with me everyday in my ex room sweating our butts off together so I don't have to exercise alone!!
Thanks for being there with me every morning,I love you guys!

You gotta do what you gotta do. A lot of people don't like change. And, the rest of them just don't "get it".
BTW-You are NOT a naive dreamer! If you were, then we all would be.
Take good care,

I'm tellin' ya!
I'm really learning how crucial it is to take measurements on a regular basis. And it's also important to measure more than just your waist. Measure everything! Trust me! You're gonna need the feedback when the scale is sticking and you are doubting your progress.
For example, the last few weeks the scale has not been moving down and some days the weight went up! Holy catastrophe Batman!!! BUTT (yes, I mean't to spell it that way!) I noticed that my butt had gone down 2 inches! My waist had stayed pretty much the same so if all I did was step on the scale and measure my waist, I would have had a pretty hard time being a happy camper!
Butt, there's nothing like losing your A$$ to cheer you up (unless you're in Vegas of course!).
So PLEASE, fill out all those measurement fields in you tracker profile every 4 weeks or so! You'll be so glad you did!!!
Jim (your friend with the incredible shrinking butt!)

I take mine first thing in the morning and my brain can only remember the main measurements between the bathroom and the computer. :)
A lame excuse...but you're absolutely right. I'd just love to get "Mr. Omron" to move a bit when I weigh in.
No... I should be saying: I WILL get Mr. Omron to move at my next weigh in!

your're so right, Measure everything!
I usually just look at my belly, the flatter it gets the more i feel that's i'm loosing, but I noticed 2 really great things,
1. my thighs don't rub together any more, I can even run and don;t get chapped , that was awful! I measured my thighs and no wonder, there 4 inches smaller,
I got an awesome suade fringe wester jacket for christmas 2003 and it didn't button, It's size large, an Xl would button but the sleeves and everything else would be to long and big, so I kept the Large accepting I could wear it well but un-buttoned.
@ weeks ago we had a cool spell at night and I brought my jacket just in case I needed it. I did need it and when I put it on, I noticed it fit looser , I pulled it together at the chest and WHAT????? It buttoned!!!! I was sooo
excited!, Hubby measured and yep, I lost 6 inchest off the shoulder / chest measurement!!
Life is wonderful and I'm happy,
so Measure everything!

Hey gang!
We've become such close friends that we share a lot more than just BFL-related stuff. Heck! I don't hand out pictures of me half-naked to my 'real-life' close friends!
Just wondered if having an Off-Topic forum would be a good idea. I think it is helpful for our BFL success to be able to share whatever we need to express. However, we're getting a pretty big group here so we need to keep things somewhat organized.
Let me know your thoughts and what kind of topics you would want to include. I don't know if the Webmaster would respond if there was a big demand but I still would like to get your feedback.

Jim , While i think it is a good idea, I also think that it might create a sisuation where people are just writing anything,
I used to do the chat thing years ago and I loved it, then more and more people came in and started saying anything, now if you go to an exercise forum, you get anything and everything( cursing, Politics, news stories and more cursing) except talk about exercise.
I wouldn't want this forum to become a chat room open for dissussion to vent about problems of the world.
What I do love, is that I have friends here on the tracker that I can relate with about BFL and If we want to vent or need to talk we always have each other, even if it means getting off the subject once in while, it's still mainly our own little world of BFL support! I don't want to loose that, I feel everything is perfect just the way it is! I love it ans I think when you get into making changes it only messes things up. I'm always a person that likes the orginial, not the New and improved, LOL!!

Linda -- Good point! My goal was to make people feel comfortable about posting whatever they felt they needed to share with their BFL friends. But I think some people hold back because they think their post might not fit into an existing forum.
So I see the solution being either making it clear that it's OK to enter such a post in the existing forums or if we prefer, to create another forum.
I sometimes feel like I'm posting something that although I feel it will be helpful to my BFL friends, it may not be very BFL-specific. So watch out! You just might turn me loose!!! (Yuk! Yuk!)

Body for Life Forum Message by rainy318 (270 posts) at 08:45 PM
YG-ROFLMAO! THAT was a good post!!!! LOL!
Jim, I like the idea of an off topic forum in theory, but bfl has become our lives so is anything really off topic? I mean, even the topic of YG shorts *snicker* came about because they were too big because he has gotten smaller, er, um, lost weight. (Alright, alright, I'm letting it go) And wouldn't prefacing a post with OT suffice? I just think that's what the BFL support board is for...support and since we're all in BFL everything could be considered bfl support...
I mean we could have a forum where we talk about sports, American Idol, road rage, child-rearing...but I come here to stay on track with BFL.
I just think it would make it more complicated than it has to be. Just my 2 cents though...
:)

Jim in the 2 months I've been here, I have yet to see a post of yours that has not been helpful, insightful or motivating. And it is all BFL related since we are all trying to improve our lives. Some days we have set backs and some days we have successes. All those days can and need to be shared here. That's how we all learn. That's what makes us all relatable to each other. Everything is relevant.
And for the fun posts, they just add some spice to our lives! They are necessary for sure!
Again, my 2 cents...well, now I'm up to 4 cents...

Your waist is the smallest part - your absomen is across your belly button.

for women it should be at the belly button. i believe it is a little different for men but can't remember exactly where.

I posted yesterday about some motivation problems I had last week. I got some great responses, but the one this young lady sent was a serious kick in the pants. It was also precisely what I needed to read. I don't mean to ignore the contribution others had for me, but this was just an awesome response that has stuck in my mind all day.
I'm back in the saddle today, and feeling much better about it all.

Girl, I'm the same way. I lost the least number of inches in my thighs....I'm planning on losing more of that in Challenge 2. I think since women seem to store fat in that area, it takes the longest to come off.

Just got back from my trip to Texas yesterday. I made sure to get all of my workouts in at the hotel. The prevailing 'wisdom' was that missing a workout or 2 wouldn't really matter...
Well, last night I came down with what appears to be a throat and/or sinus infection along with some asthma problems. As a result, I decided it was best to skip my bike ride today so that things could get better. Not sure if I'll do my weight training tomorrow.
So right now, I'm really glad I got those workouts in at the hotel! You've got to treat every single workout as being important because you never know when something will cause you to miss one.

I drink a shake every night for my evening snack. I usually add a banana and extra ice cubes to make it frothy like a real ice cream shake. There are several recipes in the Eating for Life book. There is also a recipe in there for an ice cream like dessert, which is awesome!! I love ice cream, it is the only thing I want on my free meal day. I don't have FREE DAYS, but once a week I have a Free Meal with ice cream for dessert.
I also found that sugar free kool aid helps with the sugar cravings. It's sweet and I love it!

Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (63 posts) at 09:27 AM
Hi Teralynn,
You can get protein powder anywhere, like the grocery store and I am positive Walmart carries it. I use Designer Whey and I have Chocolate and Vanilla. Someone else on this site recommended it (I think it was Daang Girl) and that's what I've been using. I think I paid $8.99 for a can at Kroger, which is probably too much and I could probably get it cheaper somewhere else. I just didn't have the time or the energy to go to another store with my crazy kids.
Good luck!!
Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (1035 posts) at 01:29 PM
Yup, Walmart carries protein powder. I also got a mongo huge thing of it from Costco. Not Designer Whey, but palatable enough. Chocolate is probably the safest flavor. I have vanilla for use in recipes though.

Do you go to a gym? The gym I go to has an ab machine with weights which is quite useful. I also do crunches with weights held against my chest. I'm f***ing amazed I can do this, because when I started I could not do a single complete situp. Now I can do 6 reps while holding a 20 lb weight.

I was sooo "big" that I think if somebody would have yelled "Hey Kool Aid!" I probably would have felt a compelling urge to bust through a wall yelling "Oh Yeahhh!"...

I did the opposite in C1, I took the before and never took the after at least I have my measurements to look back on. C2 I did not take either. How stupid is that, but that was the one I did not put everything into because of "nursing school stress". I guess I basically set myself up for failure. Now for C3, I am doing it right.

I don't think that legs cramping is normal. I would bet you have some deficiency - either not enough water or potassium. Or you might be lifting too heavy and your muscle just aren't ready for it.

WHen I have really fatigued my legs in a HARD workout, I have leg cramps as well (actually more like a dull ache).
Whenever this happens, I KNOW I am going to be sore the next day - LOL!
For me, stretching does not eliminate the issue. I do a lot of stretching and still get the aching/cramping when I have exhausted my muscles.
If it is bad enough I have trouble sleeping, getting comfortable, I will take some motrin and it usually helps.
You might also make sure you are getting enough water too, because that could be the culprit.

i've suffered from leg cramps off and on since high school. you should drink more water and get more potassium. if you get one in the middle of the night you should get up and slowly walk around. they should stop once your body adjust to your new routine.
