Leehigh this is my "trouble spot" as well. Unfortunately, spot reducing is IMPOSSIBLE! We just have to wait until the fat melts off. I've also heard that if you've got a lot of weight in your stomach and you overtrain your abs, your stomach will actually end up looking larger because your muscles will develop under the fat, pushing your fat out even farther. Make sense? Train hard and soon we'll have those gorgeous abs like all the other hotties on this site.

Thread: Diet Pop? (208 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Mrs P (47 posts) at 07:35 AM:
The article on diet pop actually making people obese (because they thought they could cheat elsewhere) was in Shape a few months ago. I read the same article! I think we BFLers who are watching our meals and eating perfectly (oh yah!) can safely drink a diet soda now and then. Just be sure to drink your water. I'll try and find that article, or go to www.shape.com and surf their archives - if it's possible.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mrs P (47 posts) at 07:36 AM:
I've gotten my husband to switch over to diet soda instead of the regular stuff. I'm trying to teach him that it would be better to get 150 calories out of a good protein/carb rather than a drink! I'm slowly weaning him off of fruit juices!! These days I would kill for a bottle of juice - if only there were more diet versions of juice. The sugar kills me!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by wdrew (42 posts) at 07:59 AM:
I think Bill Phillips mentions the diet pop thing in one of his books. At least that is what my gettin' old memory is tellin' me. I know it surprised me when I saw the recipe for the Sparkeling Orange Shake in his EFL book and saw the main ingredient was diet pop. But I'm glad they made that recepie the way they did 'cause that shake is da bomb, yo!

Thread: high reps ever good? (98 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by NaturalPhysiques (258 posts) at 08:54 AM:
There is also a myth about tone. Tone is simply the hardness of a trained muscle. There is no specific rep range to tone a muscle. If you lift weights, your muscles will tone, period. Then there's the idea of tone as an image, i.e. looking defined. If that is the goal, you must lose the fat underneath the skin (subcutaneous fat). You can gain 0 pounds of muscle but look like you gained 10 simply by getting lean and revealing the definition (definition is a better word than tone for this). Unfortunately, to do this, high reps won't cut the mustard because they won't burn as many calories as lower, heavy reps. The idea of high reps toning is a myth caused by a logic bomb people spread that isn't true. The idea is that cardio burns more fat and higher reps is more like cardio so it burns more fat. Not true. Cardio doesn't burn more fat and higher reps burn fewer calories over all. High reps, as mentioned above, are good for muscular endurance. Even if you are training for size or strength, endurance is important. You want some higher rep phases because this builds capillaries and helps the muscle shuttle oxygen and remove toxins. Extremely high reps (20+) are great for tendons and ligaments. Most people get locked in the notion of superior reps, i.e. 4-6 is best or 12, etc, but all ranges have their place and it's simply a priority of where you spend the most time based on your goals. BFL goes through the rep ranges 12 down to 6, which is great, but pyramids are not the optimal way. There is plenty of research to show that it is better to do several weeks at 12 reps, then several weeks at 10 reps, then several at 8, then several at 6, etc. This is called periodization and provides superior results over time than doing all of the reps in the same workout because it sends a mixed signal to the body. Don't worry, Bill had a great reason to design the workouts the way he did. It would be way too confusing for newbies to understand periodizaiton and how to vary the reps with time, so the pyramid is a good compromise that keeps it simple for beginners. Jeremy

thanks jeremy, i've done bfl for about 17 weeks. i've recently been trying to tweak things to shock my body. i've been experimenting with doing 4 sets of 10 with as much weight as i can handle. the jury is out on what kind of effects this will have on my body, since i just started. i'll try to read up some more on periodization on the internet to see what i uncover.

If what's stopping you from doing what you know you want/need to do is a little negative voice inside saying you will fail - crowd out that little voice with positive ACTIONS like: - reading out loud to yourself the affirmations of why you want to be healthier and how you KNOW YOU CAN DO IT - come here and stay in touch with other positive people - buy the good efl food and get rid of the bad stuff from your house/office. Always carry good snacks with you and get in touch with how good it feels to eat fuel rather than fatty sugary downer food. But most of all tell yourself that you are worth it and you will succeed!! All the very best CJ

Hey cheri, what I do is I look at the before/after pictures of the people who have already achieved their goals. Find the one that u can relate to.(BFL journal has a picture for each day). The other good thing is music - it gets me going to and I end up doing more. One more thing post your picture/goals where you can see everyday (bathroom mirror, fridge...) look/read it everyday. and when you do read it read it out (believe me it works.) Hope it works out for you, good luck.

Hi ya'll remember I was really getting bummbed out because I felt like I was doing more and more heavier wts and then got to where I just could not get to the next level of wts,, the machines at the club go in 10 and some 15 increments, so 45 would be great, but 60, just couldn't buget it, Well I listened to my body and it said, I need more to my routine, So yesterday I did my reg upper body workout, with my 12,10,8, 6, and 12 reps, then waited 2 minutes and did the same routine for chest and shoulders again. Well my stiffness and soreness I was looking for has arrived, hehe, but not overdown, It feels good, like I really worked,. I think I needed this to get my mucsles a little shocker. Also I signed up for the Kickbox class as one of my cardio days, Well it kicked my butt, it targerted all the hip, thigh and back muscles that just were not getting the target they needed. That's why it is always best to change up the routine, works different muscles that your body gets used to when you just do the same thing over and over again. or your may hit the same muscle but at a different angle Today is cardio day again, so I will go do my richard simmoms sweatin to the oldies today. Oh and the best thing, I stopped weighting myself for 3 weeks and weighed this morning, I was 165 3 weeks ago and I was 162 today, I was shocked and disapointed, then measured, I lose another 3/4 of an in on my waist and 2 in from around the belly and 1 " off the hips, I am toning, getting some muscle definition getting stronger and loosing the Body Fat!! Well I did enter the million $ challenge , but even though I don't expect to win, I already feel like a million bucks!!! 51 and looking 40 and feeling 35!! Awesome feeling! BE positive, it's a sure way to being happy! GET*HER*DONE! Linda

I agree with the thumbs up. I have gone into 5 different GNC's in my area and have had great service with each one. They even will take back stuff bought at other GNC'S. And the same thing, we were offered samples of drinks and powders if we were unsure of the taste.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mrs P (47 posts) at 06:55 AM:
Yah!! I was worried my great service was a fluke. Nice to know that GNC is providing great service all around North America. Sweet!

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (2094 posts) at 07:11 AM:
I went to a place called Popeyes last night looking for Kickstart - didn't have any - but holy crap was the guy ever helpful! He immediately started looking for something similar that I would be able to use, and opened a bottle of Amp'd to let me try it to see if I liked it. (I liked, I'll be going by to get it today!). God bless him, but he needed to know how much I weigh for the dose, and he looks me up and down said, hmm, 120 if that, probably a bit less you look like your pretty much solid muscle. Oh yeah, could have kissed him by that time. Then I was after some more chocolate protein, usually I get Champion Nutrition - but no lol, he goes, oh have you tried this one! Rips a bottle off the shelf and makes me up a chocolate proten shake. OMG was it ever yummy, best chocolate protein I have ever tasted. So I paid for my protein, and then he gave me a free slab of bottled water. I've never had so much customer service in my life!

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3479 posts) at 07:12 AM:
Whenever I go into the GNC around here, the guy does try to sell me on their brand stuff, which I suppose is his job. But the protein powder I get (Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey -- tastes REALLY good, but don't get the "natural") is a lot cheaper there during the first week of the month when I get my gold card discount than it is shipped from any of the places I could buy it from online.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mrs P (47 posts) at 07:27 AM:
Tai-Kee, I'm from Edmonton as well. I've seen Popeyes but haven't checked it out. Maybe I will. How are their prices? Their customer services sounds awesome! I just ripped into my Myoplex shakes. They are so freakin' thick! Holy crap! I had to mix it in a juice pitcher because it was so thick ... and I didn't even get all the lumps out. I swear that shake was almost a litre! I couldn't finish it all. It's sitting in my fridge right now. The flavor is alright - except I think my cheap brand NHF from Superstore is still my favorite. How long do already mixed protein shakes last? If I chug it before I go to work (30 minutes to an 1 hour from now) should it be good??

Body for Life Forum Message by deadstick (11 posts) at 01:42 PM:
I like the GNC chocolate, but I mix it with 1/2 banana and 1 cup skim milk as well (if I need some fat, a TBSP of natural peanut butter REALLY makes it taste good). I don't like it so much with plain water though.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mrs P (47 posts) at 02:32 PM:

OOps! Hello everyone. Know one here knows me yet but I hope to be a permanent part of the Body For Life Tracker. I have been checking in many times a day for about a month and I am very inspired and motivated by all of you. I am getting ready to start my second challenge as I did not complete my first one, and I need some input on what supplements to take, how much and when to take them. I made it to week 8 then it went down hill from there. I did lose 25 lbs in that 8 weeks so I know it will work that great again. I have not done body for life for about 6 weeks and have only gained back 5 lbs. I am ready to begin my challenge of a life time. I was taking 2 Thermodynamx 1/2 hour before breakfast and 1/2 hour before my 3:30 shake. I was also taking a scoop of betagen in my shakes two times a day, my second meal and my 4th meal. I was only drinking 1/2 of the shake at each of those meals (recommended by the guy at the fitness store because I need to lose quite a bit of weight) I was also taking 1 cla at my first, third and fifth meal. I think I was supposed to be taking 2. I have not taken creatine or flax seed oil. Do I need them? And how much and when. I am going to do this challenge to my fullest ability and want the best results I can get. Any input on any of this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much and I look forward to being a part of this body for life team. ~Katie~

Body for Life Forum Message by deadstick (11 posts) at 01:39 PM:
My personal opinion is you don't NEED any supplements. I take a multivitamin and use whey protein shakes as meal replacements 1-2 times per day (but out of convenience, not that I think it's better for me than a chicken breast). When I get down to near my goal weight I may experiment with creatine/betagen/etc.. but I personally wouldn't worry about it right now. When i first started I did use L-Glutamine for the first few weeks to combat sore muscles (thought I should mention that to let you know I'm not anti-supplements, but just that I think you can see results without them). There's a lot more knowledgeable people than me on here though that can help as well.

Thread: which one? (73 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by positiveimage (9 posts) at 03:08 PM: which one?
Okay I am new to all the products (ya can say that I slept through last 24 years lolzz). SO... being new to weight loss, female/24yrs old/132lbs/5ft 3in tall - goal for losing 20 lbs and decreasing body fat to <15% while increasing muscle mass -- which supplements/drinks/bars should I take...?????? (This is soo confusing to me. I want to have curves at the right places in 12 weeks)

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3479 posts) at 03:25 PM:
Personally, I think you should do your first 12 weeks just following BFL to a "T" without supplementation, except for protein powders and meal replacements for convenience. And those will depend on taste. For example, some people love Myoplex Lite and some have a hard time choking it down. Some say only getthe basic chocolate, vanilla strawberry, others like the chocolate lovers pack. YOu just need to experiment with those. Have you read Eating For Life? If not, I highly recommend it, and Bill discusses some of the protein powders and MRPs in there, as well. Hope that helps! Jess

Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (252 posts) at 03:29 PM:
Here's my suggestion: Don't fret the supplements right now. Do you have the BFL book? Follow the workouts and eat the foods recommended in that book. Push yourself hard in every workout, come here for support, to whine, to cheer, to just chatter. Do this for the first 12 weeks, then, if you aren't satisfied with your results, you can worry about muscle-building, recovery, fat-burning, etc. supplements. Most of them don't work; the good ones have a small effect, at best. They can be a great help if you are a professional or seeking to compete -- something to give just a tiny edge. But when you're just starting out, you're more likely to blow a bunch of money and false hope on supplementation when good old food and exercise will work fantastically. That said ... if you want to use meal replacement supplements such as ready-to-drink shakes or bars, there are a ton to choose from. Popular brands include the BFL products and Designer Whey's MRB's (Detour, One Way, U-Turn, etc.); there are many others (Zone perfect, South Beach Diet, etc.). These often contain more sugar or fat than you really want to consume frequently, but for a quick "candy-like" fix or a convenient meal, they are great and affordable. I hope this helps. The key to BFL (and getting that gorgeous body with all the right curves) is persistence, dedication and hard work. The answer is not in a bottle, it is in your heart and your mind. You have to decide to push yourself: eat the right foods when you crave crap, hit the gym when you want to be lazy and keep pushing ahead when it doesn't seem worth it. Because it is. Cheers! Karenna

Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (663 posts) at 11:19 PM: Betagen: Second Guessing Before I've Even Started. Help!
I read all the rave reviews of Betagen under the "Women Using Creatine" thread, and I plunked down the cash to get some.  Now that it is here, dear ol' BromBones, himself a creatine user, said, "Everything I've read about creatine says that you shouldn't use it if you are trying to lose weight."  AARGH!

Here's where I stand:  I'm just over 5'6" and I weighed 145 last I checked (although I've been doing an impression of a Hoover vac in the kitchen, so that could be higher now).  I'm starting BFL again (round 2) in the morning, and would like to get down to 130 and around 18% bodyfat (I think it is around 25% right now).

Is creatine going to make me all bloaty and fat looking, or will it make me more cut?  Should I wait for a month or so before starting it, or will it give me a jumpstart if I start it now?

I also bought ThermoDynamX.  Is it going to make me all crazy and make me want to crawl out of my skin?

ok...geez here I go.... I am a natural advocate for "whiteness"...LOL, however, I do not buy into that all sun exposure is unhealthy...in fact a bit of sun daily is actually GOOD for you...also, the "risks" supposedly from the research I have done about tanning beds is this... there are two different kinds of rays....UVA are deeply pentetrating and linked to skin damage, aging etc...however UVB are the most cancer causing, UVB is what the tanning bed removes...so your largest risk of the "bed" is dry ugly old skin.... without the added cancer effect of outside tanning :) I personally think "mystic tan" may be more toxic...how healthy is it to infiltrate all of your skin which is the LARGEST organ with a substance that stinks and changes your color and the average person has no idea what it is made up of, or long term risks or effects, it's relatively new. lastly---the only reason the world thinks we all need to be tanned...is cuz we all keep getting one and telling each other you have to have one to be sexy..... I have travelled outside the US and easily find that men find me just as sexy stark white as if I have a tan...we have such an "Americanized" view of we HAVE to have a tan...

That reminds me of a funny incident. A few years ago hubby's department at work was undergoing some changes. His supervisor, an Israeli with a thick accent, was trying to give everyone a pep talk. He kept saying he knew this was a department of winners. He wanted everyone to have a winner mentality, to really feel like winners and act like winners. He used the word "winner" a lot. This long emotional speech did not get the result he was looking for. He was puzzled with the reception, and hubby took him aside and explained that with his accent it sounded like "wieners". He'd never heard the term before, so hubby explained that in American culture, when you call a person a wiener it's like calling them a pathetic shmuck, the antithesis of what he was going for. His supervisor blushed and said no, shmuck has another specific meaning. Exactly, hubby replied.

1) Love to scrapbook, but it takes a lot to get me to actually do it. What I really like is the *stuff* paper, tools, stamps, I like organizing it and looking at it, but actually using it - that's where I get a brain freeze. 2) I'm afraid of the boogie man. Or anything that would fall into that category. Since childhood I can't watch scary movies (think Nightmare on Elm Street, The Ring, etc) because I get nightmares. What's weird is that scary movies that could *really happen* don't bother me, like psychological thrillers (ie Silence of the Lambs)..but then there's no gory monsters 3) I think I might be a "channel" to the other side. My mom says that as a child I used to talk to my grandfather, he died a few days after my 1st bday. I do my best to avoid any situation where I could run into a ghost (including not getting up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night) because I'm not sure I can actually handle an interaction like that. Althought I'd really love to *meet* my Grandpa.

BecomingMe - scary moveies are made for ME!!!! They make me think that every serial killer out there knows when I'm alone. I truly, truly am terrified. I will not watch, no way, no how. Anybody remember the show Hart to Hart? I used to cover my eyes!!!! CJ - the most heartbreaking of all!!!! I hate cats. I like someone else's but I'm not a cat person - I'm a dog person. Last August we got this cat for our 2 girls (they totally love cats). I caved and we got him. We called him Oscar. The cat and I totally fall in love. I guess I believe in ghosts but have no opinion. This cat was reincarnated as someone I knew and loved - I KNOW THIS FOR A FACT. He used to just sit there and look at me - I knew and he KNEW. So Oscar became MY cat. He knew I hated cats, and I knew that he knew that. I loved that stupid cat more than anything. He died when he was only 8 months old - 8 months old for cryin out loud!!!!! I was heartbroken. I will never ever have a cat like Oscar again. Tai - I only have one really best friend. I'm a loner too. Not that I'm not social, I am, I just don't like putting my eggs in any basket. I totally love people but I just can't get close to them. I also know what I'm like - you really have to know me to like me or the other way is you like me or you don't. Flower I know what you mean about cats. I wasn't allowed to have any pets with my ex-husband, so first thing I did when I got my own place was head to the SPCA to check things out. I had looked on their website and saw this cute black fluffy cat - her name was Sassy so I asked if I could see her. Before opening the cage, they warned me she had been at the shelter for nearly a year, and was not very friendly. Well, the minute they opened the cage she headed towards me, put her paws on my sweater and started kneeding rubbing her head under my chin and purring. It was instant love! One of the girl that was with me actually started crying - while the other one said "Well I guess you are taking her then hey?" And I sure did! Here's the picture I saw on the spca site: http://www.fortmcmurrayspca.com/index.php?Page=Gallery&Gallery=10&Image=620#fullImage And here she is all tuckered out :) http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/onetokenangel/detail?.dir=/6166&.dnm=63d2.jpg&.src=ph She sits besides me nearly every waking moment I'm at home - it's nearly to the point of insanity lol *bops sassy on the head*

Oh, Tai, she's adorable! I love it! My cats both chose me, as well. Bianca I had to leave behind after we'd adopted each other because there was a waiting period (she'd been found on the side of the road at only 8 weeks old, and they had to give the owners a chance to claim her). When I put her back in the cage, she meowed at me, and when I reached up to scritch the cat in the cage above hers, she actually stood up on her hind legs and swiped at me with her paw. She's got an attitude, that one!

Okay, so this is kind of strange. It seems that our "friend" (and I use the term extremely losely) johnsmith has been bumped from this board which I find a little funny. I posted to oust this guy a few days ago and everyone thought I was being too hard on him ... it appears that Mr. Smith struck again and was sending some offensive emails to a tracker regular and now the posse was out to get him. Am I right on that?? So now he's gone as well as all of the posts relating to him. J-Dub was that your mission last night?

Body for Life Forum Message by Mrs P (47 posts) at 07:22 AM:
There was a vote?

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3479 posts) at 07:23 AM:
I don't think everyone thought you were too hard on him... I think we wanted to keep the negativity off the board. T~N~T's leaving is a good example of why. My mission was to bump a lot of other threads to the top to push his posts off the page so that people would stop responding to them. He was a troll. He needed to be reported to the Webmaster and ignored, not given so much attention. He's gone because he started his stupid little vote thread, and he was voted off the island, so he kept his word and deleted his profile, which takes every post he made away from the board as well. The "posse" wasn't out to get him. I can only speak for myself, but I was only out to protect the board from dissolving into chaos again, because it drains the board of its positive vibe and takes our focus away from supporting each other.

Body for Life Forum Message by Mrs P (47 posts) at 07:40 AM:
J-Dub thanks for the explanation. I kind of figured that something like that had happened. Crazy how one comment can totally send someone's progress and sense of self worth and accomplishment spiraling! I'm so glad TNT didn't leave. Thanks for your work. You're a good peace keeper; are you sure you're not Canadian? :)

Body for Life Forum Message by success072305 (102 posts) at 08:24 AM:

Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (252 posts) at 09:44 AM:
I was the one who brought up "posse," Mrs P! :-) The last time we were taken over by trolls (more than one at that time), it dissolved into utter chaos and I deleted my own profile out of frustration. This time, when I saw the current troll creeping around and a few well-meaning folks attempting to trust him and welcome him into the fray, I went straight for the throat. I think that possibly got the ball rolling in that folks started to say outright that he needed to leave the boards. His little dance for attention was short-lived. BTW, I wrote to the Webmaster, too. There will always be trolls. Last time, many of us promised to ignore their presence when they show up. This guy wasn't being ignored because he was trying to paint himself as a victim of misunderstanding. It was a lie -- you just had to be a cynical crank like myself to see it. :-P

Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (252 posts) at 11:07 AM: A great television show you should see
Hey, guys. Has anyone been watching "Into the West" on TNT? Tonight, Friday and Saturday the finale airs (Episode 6), but I'm sure TNT will show the whole miniseries again. It's very good if you haven't caught it. Makes me want to hit the library and read up on the American settlers and the Native Americans. Oh, and since I'm plugging TV shows ... any chance one of you watched "Firefly," the extremely short-lived sci-fi/western miniseries that Fox destroyed a few years back? It's probably one of the best shows you've never heard of. A movie, "Serenity," is coming out this fall and you can buy or rent the DVDs of the series most places. :-)

Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (148 posts) at 12:08 PM:

I loved that show! I saw a preview for Serenity and was like..."It seems like I've seen this before" - it looks really good but it appears that it does rehash a lot of the info on the series.

Yes and no, dndoty ... there's a huge Firefly following here (a guy who organized a nationwide plea to keep the show on the air lives here), and many of these folks have seen the sneak previews of the movie. It rehashs enough to bring in "newbies" but is good for die-hard fans, so I've heard.

Body for Life Forum Message by BIG BULL (468 posts) at 11:46 AM: Do you have "LAWN" envy???
This may be a guy thing........

We move into our newly built home at the beginning of June and have a sodded front yard.  I catch myself comparing my lawn to everybody else's lawn.  A lot of the lawns look WAY better than mine.......at least it appears that way.  But I just had a thought.......some of those neighbors moved in before us and are a bit further along time-wise.  I also stand over my lawn and see all the little imperfections, whereas I just drive or walk by my neighbor's and don't take time to see the detail.  From the street..............their's looks pretty good (minus the detail)!

Isn't that kinda like BFL........be careful how you compare yourself to others!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (2094 posts) at 11:50 AM:
Oh yes bull... We just sodded our backyard about 6 weeks ago - it's going great and looks fantastic - specially since everyone esles back yard in our field of vision kinda sucks :P Once the lawn starts growing and roots in - you are going to love it :) But I definately find myself noticing lawns more - now I know why some people get obsessive about their grass!

Body for Life Forum Message by gp800mark (366 posts) at 11:51 AM:
I drive my wife and kids crazy with the landscaping. I will tell them, 'come here, come here, look what's outside'. The kids come running to the window and I say, 'would you just look at my beautiful yard!' LOL Yes, your landscaping mirrors BFL, devote the time and energy, stay focussed and you will have amazing results!

Yes! And it's compounded now because we live in an apartment and no longer have a lawn. :-(

Good analagy, Big Bull. I get overwhelmed at my back yard (we just moved in 4 months ago and there is nothing there but bad grass). All my neighbors have nice 100 yr old trees and nice shrubs and bushes and I got zilch. It is also like BFL, though, I won't change it overnight, but little by little it will change for the better.

Oh yeah, and moles are my arch-rivals ... lol I've got the same thing, except 4 acres and NO pasture! Although, it occasionally looks like a hay field since it really needs mowing every 4 days, but I tend to do it about every 8. I used to have a lot more lawn envy, but now I just keep it presentable (having a new baby takes a bit of time away from yard work). At 5-7 hours per time, the only thing I'd spray it with is Roundup! Yesterday my dog got sprayed by a skunk which I believe is living in my dogwoods (next to the house in the landscaping) so if you smell something bad tomorrow on here it could be me - I've got to mow tonight and I doubt the skunk will take kindly to my John Deere within 6 inches of him!

Hey, Lovey: Are you getting those compliments when you're mowing? (bwahhhahhhahha) I was so sad to leave our first home/yard in S.C. After three years, I was finally learning how to take care of it. Our backyard was pretty bad -- lots of fireant mounds and sandy spots. Every time I mowed it was pretty much just to rearrange the dust and ants.

Hey Deadstick, I have a solution for the skunk smell on your dog if you're interested! The same thing happened to our dog and I didn't want him NEAR the house, let alone IN it! Put your dog in your bathtub (or you could do this outside with a hose). Cover him/her in TOMATO juice and rub it in all over the fur. THIS WORKS!! They will probably smell of tomatoes for a couple days...but then it's all good! :)

Thread: Need some ideas - online storefront (52 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3479 posts) at 07:24 PM: Need some ideas - online storefront
A friend of mine does a radio morning show. He wants to have an online store where he can sell t-shirts, boxer shorts, mugs, etc with his logo on them, with the proceeds going to charity. We are looking for something like Cafe Press, but with lower prices. He doesn't want to charge $25 for a t-shirt, for example, just to make a profit for the charity (which he'd have to do because CP keeps the base price, and their base prices are fairly high). But it needs to be like CP in that they handle the sales and shipping, as it will likely get very busy and he just can't do it himself. It doesn't necessarily have to be a free site, there can be some reasonable cost involved in set-up or even a monthly fee. So. Do any of you know of any other sites like Cafe Press?

Body for Life Forum Message by kt30 (17 posts) at 07:38 PM:
I saw a site called www.zazzle.com, not sure what all the costs would be, but maybe check it out??

Body for Life Forum Message by kt30 (17 posts) at 07:42 PM:
www.printmojo.com may be an option as well

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3479 posts) at 07:52 PM:
I've been trying to look at zazzle for the past 15 minutes and it won't load! Not a great confidence-builder, LOL! Printmojo.com looks interesting, but they won't give you the pricing until you join and place a pre-paid order, other than to say that it will cost my friend $3.50 for each item shipped. That seems high since they're also going to charge the buyers for shipping, so it would add to the cost of the items... but it might still be worth a look. Thanks for the recommendations. Any others?

Body for Life Forum Message by NaturalPhysiques (258 posts) at 08:36 PM:
Really, the reason why the cost is high isn't because CafePress is trying to run business off of the web, but because of the high cost involved with print on demand. Any time you are paired with a site like CafePress that prints single units on demand, the cost is going to be much higher. The only alternative is to partner with a company that will do the shirts and mugs bulk, then partner with a fulfillment center to pack and ship the items (or do it yourself), then link into a shopping cart. The first requires ordering hundreds or thousands of units up front. You then have a lot of time and labor packing and shipping, unless you hire a fulfillment center (these are very reasonable). For example, for my 5-CD set, printing single sets costs me EIGHT TIMES what it would cost if I were to purchase 1,000 units and resell them. I don't have much demand for my logos or mugs (I usually give them as gifts for publicity etc) so I can't help you with a mass manufacturer, but I can certainly help with a fulfillment center and a shopping cart, because I've researched and partnered with both. Let me know if I can be of assistance - private message me and we'll take it from there. Jeremy

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3479 posts) at 08:50 PM:
Ah, that makes so much sense, Jeremy, and to tell you the truth I guess I didn't know fulfillment centers even existed. But the station can get all the products he wants at a better cost. PM is on the way! Thanks! Jess

Fun Things to Do at a Drive-Thru 1. Drive through the drive-thru in reverse and let your passenger order. 2. Ask the price of almost everything on the menu and then order something that you didn't ask the price for. 3. Tell the employee that your window is broken. Order and then pay with your door open. When the food comes, roll down the window and snatch your order from their hands. 4. Go to McDonald's and demand a big breakfast at 11:30 at night. Put up a fight. 5. Pay for a large order in pennies and nickels. 6. Order in another language. Be careful what neighborhood you're in. 7. When asked if they can take your order, tell them you are just window-shopping and drive on. 8. Laugh sadistically when asked if you would like ketchup. 9. Ask the cashier how they fit into that little box. 10. If they make you wait, make them wait when they come back on. 11. Demand to speak to the manager. When they come on, complain that you did not like the way the employee said, "May I take your order?" 12. When asked if they can take your order say, "Why, can I take yours?" 13. If they ask you to wait, order anyway and keep doing it till they yell at you. 14. Pretend your car has broken down. Ask for assistance moving it. When they come out, drive away. 15. Tell them you have to use the bathroom. 16. Order a cup of water and two napkins. That's it. 17. Don't order when they come on. Just sit there. If a line forms behind you, get out of the car and cause a scene. 18. When they hand you your food, hand them a bag with all the trash from your car in it. 19. Just stare at them when you pay and get your food. Don't break your stare. 20. Honk your horn the whole way through the line

Coke Zero gets my vote. I really don't care for regular Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, or any of that other stuff. I had weaned myself down to C2, which I now like better than the "real thing", but I was happy to find something that was completely calorie, carb, sugar free like the Coke Zero. They went on sale here a few weeks ago....you got 5 twelve packs for $10 and then you got a rebate for $5....so $1 a 12-pack. We now have enough Coke Zero and C2 to last until next year since we only treat ourselves once or twice a week...ROFL!!! Melanie =)

I've been doing deadlifts (both regular for quads and stiff-legged for hamstrings) for 3 weeks now. On my last couple sets, I have lower back pain. 10 minutes after I'm done, the pain is gone (in fact, my back actually feels better I think). Is this normal? Again, it's not causing lingering back pain. I am doing it with a mirror, keeping my back straight, wearing a squat belt, and not lifting too much weight. I really like them as an alternative to squats during this 4-week "mini" so I'd like to keep doing them and think it's probably ok but thought I should ask. Thanks,

I do straight-leg for hamstrings and was having back pain until I learned to "stick my butt out" on the bend. Also, make sure you really work hard on your "core" muscles -- all abs and back. Back hyperextensions are fantastic and are always a part of my ab routine.

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (915 posts) at 03:54 PM:
I agree with Supa K on working the lower back with your abs routine! It is soooo important. The good thing is that you can strengthen it pretty quickly once you start working it. I feel a big difference when I haven't been working it often enough when running and when lifting.

Is anyone here from the Edmonton area? If so, do you know any personal trainers that know about body for life? I would like to talk to someone in person who knows the program and could help me get started. Some of the exercises I did in challenge #1 are ok but there are some I need help with. I workout out of my home so I don't have all the fancy gym equipment. Some of those body parts I need exercises for are my back and my triceps. Hamstrings, quads and glutes. I have a bench that allows me to do leg extensions and leg curls. Any info would be great. Thank you ~Katie~

I'm not in the area. However, if you have trouble finding them, there are plenty of online trainers who can provide a quality service ... if it's form you need, there's no substitute for someone in person. If it's accountability, an optimized program, troubleshooting nutrition, etc, that can all be done online! Jeremy

Contrary to what you might think, I DID get off the computer and hit the gym today. :-) I did a 40-minute cardio circuit and 20 minutes into it got that beloved endorphin rush: tingly all over and a goofy smile. Man, I lOVE that feeling! HIIT is alright but the 40-minute workout always makes me feel so good! I think I should blend those into my routines once a week. Cheers! K

Body for Life Forum Message by rosymom (24 posts) at 03:35 PM: Exercise and sleep
I have found on days I workout I feel much more energetic directly after the workout but it is much harder for me to get out of bed the next morning.

Has anyone else had this happen?  Will it get better as my body gets more used to regular exercise?

Thanks :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (252 posts) at 03:42 PM:
I think it will get better, but perhaps consider what it is you eat as your last meal. I believe cottage cheese and an apple or cottage cheese and yogurt are the most highly recommended meals before bed. They burn very slowly. I don't know whether that will affect how tired you are in the morning, but it can't hurt!

Body for Life Forum Message by melissab (35 posts) at 03:48 PM:
I have cottage cheese with strawberries and sleep like a baby! When you wake up and it's hard to get out of bed, is it because you're tired or sore? I would say your body isn't yet used to all the activity and just needs more time to adapt.

Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (252 posts) at 04:00 PM:
Oh! One more thing: you might need a bit more rest than usual because you're pushing your body now. It'll come back around in time.

Body for Life Forum Message by rosymom (24 posts) at 04:42 PM:
I am not too terrible sore, I just sleep very soundly. For example, I'll hit my snooze button w/o realizing it. Normally, I'd wake up right away. Thanks for the advice. It's not too bad, but I have slept through when i was planning to workout and had to do it at night.

Hi gang! I have a degenerated disk in my lower back and most of the time it is not a problem, But the other day I strained it on the leg sled machine. It usually recovers after about week, but I want to be careful to select the right exercises that won't strain my back again. I'm looking for a suggestion of back exercises I can do as well as which exercises to avoid. Thanks! Jim

Body for Life Forum Message by rosymom (24 posts) at 04:50 PM:
I'm not a doctor, and I don't even play one on TV....but when I suffered from sciatica my pt gave me this exercise that really helped: Get down on your hands and knees and slowly extend the opposite arm and leg at the same time, then lower down. Do reps on one side, then do the other. Sometimes he would balance a small ball on my lower back to be sure I wasn't lifting the hip that was being extended.

Body for Life Forum Message by GET*HER*DONE (1818 posts) at 09:12 PM:
Jim, I have 2 hernaited disk in my back, when it acts up I scretch, the cat scretch and get on the back machine at the gym, it helps to strenghten the lower back muscles, the erector spiane muscles with out sudden impact or twisting. Also remember the stronger your ab muscles the stronger your lower back with get. Ask your doctor, about it, it really helps me also remember not to ever do any un-supported forward flexion moves, as in the dead lift, that's one exercise that while it is an ex to strengethen it can hurt you if your back is not perfecly alligned Linda

Has anyone ever heard of this? I've never. Think of holding dumbbells palms up, elbows at your sides then you "serve" like a big platter straight out. Supposed to work bicep/tricep/forearm at the same time. Any input??????

Body for Life Forum Message by legaleagle (21 posts) at 08:58 PM:
Uh, yeah. I know why it's called a SERVER. Because when I was a server at a restaurant for 5 years, I got some really great biceps! I would assume that this motion with the dumbell simulates the action that a server does 50 gazillion times per shift of lifting and carrying a tray of drinks or plates of food.

Body for Life Forum Message by WeCanDoIt (314 posts) at 04:14 PM:
Ok....so how has losing weight affecting my relationship? I wanted to think about this before I posted because this is a very personal thing, but it’s something I struggle with, so maybe by posting it someone will understand. Here I go… Let me say that my husband, Jason, is a wonderful, caring, most giving man I have EVER MET! I consider myself lucky….I truly do! I don’t know how he puts up with me! Did I also mention how patient he is? When I met my husband I was “plump” and ended up ballooning more and more over time. I had personal confidence, in that I knew I was a good person…”smart”…yadda yadda yadda. But I was very self conscience of my image. I knew I was fat and just a plain’ol Jane. I was in engineering school….who needs to look good when all the other guys in my class were grunged out too? (It wasn’t till recently that I started to embrace my feminine side…that might not make a lot of sense to some people.) Jason never knew me as thin….I never really knew me as thin. So then this magical thing started happening. Me losing weight caused me to gain some more confidence! Now, how they heck am I supposed to deal with that?? Yes, it sounds like a good thing…but honestly it’s a “bad” thing too. Losing weight has changed me. I feel like I want to go out and relive the youth I didn’t have. (Yes, I know I’m 25 and young…I must sound so silly…but I’m 25 and married. I can’t just drop everything and be irresponsible. I made a commitment.) My interests/hobbies have changed, and they aren’t the same things that Jason likes to do. Is this making sense? I feel like I’m not the same person Jason married. (Ouch! It hurt to type that). Dropping 60 pounds has changed me THAT much. This may not make any sense, because it still doesn’t make much sense in my head. Ok…so there you go. Do I sound like a spoiled only-child brat that I am, or what? Sigh… Mary

Body for Life Forum Message by CJ (90 posts) at 04:38 PM:
I hear ya Mary. One of the hardest things about committed relationships is that we have the tendency to want our partners to stand still in time and not evolve beyond us. Because of course we don't want to be left behind. But a great, long, lasting relationship I have found is centred around a desire (stronger than any fear of being left behind) for the one we love to become the very pinnacle of their own potential. It is an painful truth (but beautiful too) that loving means letting go sometimes. And letting go can just mean releasing our hold on the person we first met and welcoming the evolved person. Don't be afraid to grow and change, true love will adapt. Or it will let you fly away.

Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (252 posts) at 04:39 PM:
Nope. Just human, and I relate to all you said (except the losing 60 lbs part, I'm still working on losing my lbs). Interests and hobbies my hubby and I share now: eating together, watching movies or TV together, our daughter. Things we could share: hiking, camping, possibly even golf. Things we don't share: working out or anything related to that. He's a technology freak, I couldn't care less. I suppose there's hope. :-)

WOW! I don't know how to deal with all this. I'm truly touched, because there are SO many wonderful transformations on here. Honestly all it took was some determination, visualization, motivation, and some change to my diet and routine to achieve results. Anyone can do that. :) I am really REALLY proud to say that I have lost 60 pounds, but I still don't think I have reached my body's potential. The best is yet to come! You all have really motivated me! So this weekend I'm going to work on getting my "story" together and submit it to various magazines. WOW Oprah?! Now THAT would be cool! Anyone have connections to her? Hahaha… Thank you EVERYONE for your support! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! (I can’t say that enough!) Mary

I TRIED to get a packet but I couldn't get one! Very frustrating. I did it online once in april, never got it so I called in May, talked to someone, still never got it called AAGAIN in june, talked to someone again, realized my house number was wrong, said they'd send it right out, STILL never got it, so I am just, well, I guess I'm not doing it. its too late anyway, right?? I knd of thought I should do next years since there is only 1 winner this year so my chances are pretty much nil. I will wait till next year when I might get a blurb somewhere or something. I did send pics to the bodyforlife website. but, I bet they didn't get them anyway! LOL. I'm doing this for me anyway! No worries. Jamber

Yes I have, I have sent in two official packages and I am in week 4 of this challenge and I will send this one in as well and I will probably do another one to close out 2005! I sure do hope that someone from the tracker wins, it will be great!

My wife and I will send in our packets once done, i wonder if anyone from Cyprus has ever sent in a packet. I too had a problem in getting a kit sent out to me till i spoke to Marc (ever so kind bfl manager) and had them sent out to me. You are all champions on this site but my money is on Kevin. I made him promise to come and visit me once he won his million. To all of us who wont win... we have gained a bond and friend ship with each other that money cant buy, that unto itself makes me feel that i have already won the million!!! God bless you all my dear friends Pan

I think there are a couple of people who have a GREAT chance from Tracker!!! I have not entered this year...was planning to, but didn't get the results I wanted, so I didn't enter...doing it more for me. I have a packet that I am not going to use if anyone wants me to send it to them, though!!! PM me! It would be ok to do that, right??? Nancy

I sent in for my C1. I wanted to complete the challenge and by writing the essay, that completed it for me. The essay may have been the biggest challenge of all. I don't think I'm sending my C2 results, but maybe I could get some recognition for continuing on with a cast on my leg, but I doubt it.

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (15 posts) at 02:26 PM:

I did. I enjoyed the process of putting the package together, writing the essay, seeing how far I'd come in 12 weeks. Oh, and I downloaded a pdf version of the entry materials from the BFL website, instead of requesting that they send me a packet. If you need a packet, you could check there and see if that's still an option.

I saw the title of this thread - whew! That took a load off my mind. I've been reading your blog regularly (don't know how to post a comment tho!!!!!). So I've never really had the opportunity to offer any type of support; I could have here I suppose. Teresa, I've seen how you've been struggling with your plateau. You must be so, so frustrated!!!!!!! Surely it can't last much longer! When reading your blog I've always looked beyond that and just enjoyed only what you were writing - your writings are just fun and entertaining (I think I'll pm you further). On a lighter note - isn't one of the 10 commandments LOVE THEY NEIGHBOUR!?!?!?! LOL Tracey

BIG, BIG sign of relief!!! Teresa, you are one of the more inspirational, positive, and just plain nice folks on here! When somebody leaves tracker, it seems worse than the KGB or the mob.... every trace just dissapears! Hate That! RE: The plateau....those last few pounds, inches, etc... are bound to be much harder than the first few... ( remember the paper towel theory?) In my mind, it just means that you must be that much closer to your peak than you think. The pictures certainly show that! Do not sweat it, as it is body for life, and you still have another 10 years of fighting the good fight before you even get to where I am ( age wise that is, lol). Hugs! Yours in Health, Kerry

I still really have no idea what happened here yesterday but good to see you back. I really wouldn't let this plateau bother you so much. If you still want to get even leaner than you are now (can't see why though, your body seems to be as close to perfect as I've seen but your choice) It's crunch time you need to play with your caloric intake your exercises and protien to carb to fat ratios mix them all up as much as you possibly can and this should produce results. Really I think you look fantasic as is now but I guess we're all our own worst critics eh?

Maybe since you're in such good shape now, things are just shifting instead of dropping dramatically. Hey, maybe your body is just building up for a sneak attack! Anyway, thanks for coming back!! Jeanie :D

Thread: A special Tour De France moment for me.. (91 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1267 posts) at 12:47 AM: A special Tour De France moment for me..
Yesterday I stopped by a local sports bar/restaurant to get something to eat. This place has a lot of plasma TVs and good food and is a nice place to watch sports. Well, as I was leaving I recognized an older white-haired man sitting at the bar... "Hi guy! Remember me? I met you last summer in late July. We were sitting here having drinks and watching the Tour De France. You may not recognize me because I'm a lot lighter now..." He stared for a moment and then replied "Yeah, I do remember.. Holy crap! You've lost a lot of weight! Good job!" I distinctly remember my conversations with him last summer because I wondered if he thought I was just another big-talking drunk bragging about how good I used to be on the bike... But here I was in my bike clothes having just finished my aerobic intervals training session. "Do you remember me talking about someday wanting to compete in time-trials? Well, look over there. There's my van...and there's my Rocketwing racing bike. I just got back from my first real time-trial training session on Fiesta Island. I'm preparing to compete in the Fiesta Island time-trial races starting in September!" He looked somewhat stunned. He stared at my bright red bike jersey... and then my Rocketwing... "Wow Jim, that's amazing! just amazing... It's so good to hear of someone making a comeback like that. Wow! You're making me think that maybe I REALLY can lose this 30-40 lbs that have been bugging me for so long. Man, keep up the good work!" I told him a little about Body-For-Life and gave him some words of encouragement to give it a try and then left. It really made me realize just how much things can change in a year. I had no idea last summer that by the time the next Tour De France rolled around that for the first time in many years I would no longer just be a spectator - but actually be training for a bicycle race... And to not only be getting my life back, but even inspiring others to dare to dream again...and to believe that maybe it's not too late to give it just one more try... Jim

Thread: Egg Yolks? (104 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by johnnyrelish (8 posts) at 08:40 AM: Egg Yolks?
Hi, So far so good on this challenge but one question. What's the deal with egg yolks? I'm pretty much living out the EFL book but can't seem to find egg white powder. And I'm afraid my culinary skills only stretch to getting the eggs out the shells without spilling egg everywhere! Surely eating the yolks ain't so bad? Advice anyone? Thanks, John

Body for Life Forum Message by Goddessa (1849 posts) at 08:43 AM:
Johnny, I have heard that you can have 1 yolk per 6 eggs. This is the ratio I use when I make eggsalad. Now if you decide to make an omelet and use just 4 or 5 eggs, then by all means add a yolk to it. Its ok :D

Body for Life Forum Message by Amylea29 (25 posts) at 08:48 AM:
I buy the egg whites in a carton ..they are located next to the egg beaters...at my store anyway... In the EFL book he has 2 eggs and an orange...so I'm assuming they aren't all bad? Amy

Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (489 posts) at 09:11 AM:
Carton eggs whites are the way to go, quick easy, etc. The yolks are just totally loaded with cholesteral. Yours in Health, Kerry

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (915 posts) at 01:46 PM:
Yep, carton egg whites...the ones I buy are called All Whites and are near the egg beaters.

Body for Life Forum Message by annie1104 (151 posts) at 02:20 PM:
Hm, you learn something new every day. I didn't know you could buy egg whites. I might try them, but my dog would be disappointed - she loves getting my yolks with her breakfast!

Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (148 posts) at 04:03 PM:
May people don't use egg yolks because that's where the fat is. Although it's a good idea to limit your fat intake (ratios like 5/1 whites to yolks) You're really not doing anything 'bad' when you have a yolk or two... check out this info... http://www.enc-online.org/eggnutr.htm If you like buying your eggs whole, but have difficulty seperating your eggs.. you may want to pick up one of these. http://www.alwaysbrilliant.com/?PID=734&SC=98734&PN=Egg%20Separator&KW=Egg%20separator

What did you dream about when you were just a kid???  What did you want to become? achieve? experience?

As Thoreau once wrote........"Don't worry if you have built your castles in the air.  They are where they should be.  Now put the foundations under them."

What are your "castles" now????????????????

One of my "castles" is to be a varsity girls head basketball coach some day......Today I coach freshman girls...Tomorrow???......sky's the limit!!!

My FAITH, my FAMILY and BFL have been huge "foundations" for those castles.

What say you?????????

I had alot of dreams, most of them came true! I wanted to get married and have a big family (15 kids)and live in the country on a farm with lots of animals and be a fitness instructor When I was divorced and had no children and was stuck at a dead end job that I didn't want anymore, I thought, what a life, not how I dreamed about it. Then I met Bill, MY MR RIGHT! Got married, couldn't get Pregant, so we became foster parents, and adopted 2 I was certified as an aerobic instructor and taught for 15 yrs. including teaching workshops to the instructors. We moved from the big city to a small farm in Mississippi, have goats, horses, chickens, pigs, ducks dogs and cats. we now have 4 beautiful girls, 6 grandchildren and foster kids that have grown up and still visit, call, and e-mail all my dreams came true even better then I dreamed they would! That's why I call myself "Lucky Linda" I am Lucky and God has Blessed me in more ways then I ever dreamed Think Positive, dreams do come true!

When I was a kid I wanted to be an artist and a writer. I dreamed about being thin and athletic, but knew it would never happen in a million billion years. I wanted to be able to run hurdles, pole vault, and do pull ups. I'm building that foundation, but some how I can't seem to connect the basement with the first floor. Every time I lay in another row of bricks, that castle floats up another foot.

Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (822 posts) at 12:00 PM:
Gosh, ok. I dreamed of becoming a famous pop star...that's all I ever thought about. I grew up eating, sleeping, dreaming, DOING, music...and nothing else. Now that I'm getting older and the industry just wants frickin' teenagers I don't really know what I want anymore. I have never done anything else, never had any other job except being a singer, so for that I am thankful and grateful and all those years growing up doing nothing but music helped me make a career out of it. I've done some pretty cool things, sung backups for people (which I hate because I want to be where THEY are) and I make a pretty darn good living at this. I still have that dream although somewhere along the way I had to let it go a little bit. I had to wake up and realize that I was getting desperate for it and it was making me unhappy. So, while I would still LOVE to have a hit record and tour the world, I'm trying to be happy daily and find other things to think about, LIKE BFL!! Other than that, I know my "man" is still out there and I will meet him one day too. I have a man now but I don't feel in my heart that he's the one. :( He's an incredible human being though, I must say. But you know in your heart whether they are the "one" or not. Ok, so I got sidetracked. That's about it for me. xo

Supergirl, you're living my dream! I'd love to be a backup singer! I dreamed of singing on Broadway...I got as far as regional dinner theater and I was featured singer on a cruise ship. Then I got married and had kids...and I really do have a dream life now...just a different one! I also dreamed of being a music teacher...that one I DID do and loved it! My dream now is to be a great mom and wife with an awesome body! Oh, and someday I WOULD like to sing backup for Sandy Patty (it's not TOO far-fetched, she lives just north of here!).

Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (148 posts) at 03:52 PM:
The first 'dream' I ever had was to be a vet - then I started dealing with injured animals and realized I was WAY to empathetic to handle that day in and out. Then I wanted to be an achitect. But I got married instead of going to school. Now I have dreams of owning my own business, and traveling a-lot... We've started on our business and being it's a travel based business we can take care of two dreams in one go. As a kid I never thought I would get married. Somehow I became convinced that marriage was important and when I met someone who actually wanted ME - I dropped all my other dreams to do this one thing that really hadn't even dreampt about. Well, I learned my lesson and won't do that again! Despite being one of the biggest mistakes in my life - the marriage lasted 15 years (I'm kind of stuborn)and I got three beautiful children out of the deal. Four years ago I met the man that completed my soul. We are happily engaged and living together with no 'wedding date' set. I've realized over the years was what I wanted was a 'relationship' not nessisarily a 'marriage'. What's important is not the 'state' but the 'person'. Eventually we will get married but we're willing to wait to make it what WE want it to be. We're planning to take a trip to England, then hop the border and 'elope' in Scotland. And of course I have a dream to be trip toned and strong. It's a dream I have trouble visualizing though. It's hard to think of myself in those terms to it tends to be one of those 'wouldn't it be cool' things instead of 'I can't wait until I..." dreams. I need to work on that.

Body for Life Forum Message by CHRISTREIGNS77 (129 posts) at 08:37 PM:
I have dreams of having many children, adopting some down the road as well, a house full of noise and fun, chaos and lots of love :) I also dream of helping others improve themselves, becoming involved in ministry so that others can become the people they need to be for themselves, their family and friends, but mostly so they can become productive, moving forward, becoming successful in ways they thought they never could, or never knew how..most people are stuck in the rat race, or just stagnant with their lives, and unhappy, and I have a heart for people who feel lost that way, but have lots of goals and ambition hidden inside..I can't wait! Of course, I have to get everything in my life in order first before I can truly help others, one reason I am here! :)

Interesting choice of topics Big Bull. This is exactly what ruined the last 4 weeks of my second challenge. I hit 41 and suddenly realized that the dreams I had were not going to come true. Not that I would just give up, but some dreams are age related or only possible with talents you are either born with or not (alas, some things can't be taught). So, after a sufficient period of feeling sorry for myself ... I picked me up, dusted me off and started dreaming some new dreams. So my new castles are: To be able to sell my paintings. To have a better body than when I was younger. To find a job working with children. To be financially independant so I can live my own life my way. To be loved for "who I am" instead of "who I can be if I try hard enough" (that's an old one that I decided to keep). I figure I'm on the first floor ... I just hope my castle doesn't have really high towers. ;) J-Dub ... I didn't even try to be Barbie, I'm too short (lol), but I did want to prove that blondes don't always have more fun!! :D Jeanie :D

Dreams? dreams.. Honestly, most of the time I was growing up as a kid, i was too scared to have dreams. It opened yourself to disappointment and failure. Now I sit here thinking and really wondering about Bull's question. What are my dreams? As I get older, I realise I really want to be a family. The kind of family I never really had growing up. I want to marry the man that loves me, and have kids. I want to grow old with him, and have the same relationship with my kids as my BF has with his family. Sounds kinda lame compared to eveyrone elses :)

I think I STILL want to be Barbie! Therein lies the problem. How can you be barbie when your 20's are spent changing diapers and broke??? LOL. BUT........I am going to turn the negative into the positive. For now I will settle for a lamer, poorer version of Martha Stewart, I can be then "MOM" and raise 5 great kids, and then I can be Barbie when they are grown and gone(I'll only be 46 when my youngest son is 18)and then I can have the dream house and the convertible and the fashion collection. Of course, I will most likely have just a version of this dream, but I will enjoy life like Barbie does!! She can do anything and so can I!!!

I find myself working out in the strangest places... I was getting very bored in the stand-up tanning booth so I decided to make it an extra workout place. I do squats (no weights of course) and calf raises!!!! I do them almost as low as when I workout and do as many as I can until my thighs are screaming!!!! Then I do calf raises until I can't do another one. Then I go back to squats. I do this for 7 or 8 minutes and I have trouble walking out of the booth!!! I also contract my tummy while I am doing all of this. Try it if you haven't done so and please share any workouts you do in strange places!! I feel a little OCD with my workouts but it can't be a bad thing, right?!? Have a fabulous day tracker buddies - I love you guys!!

I recently started working concessions at several venues to raise funds for my daughters' dancing. Sometimes I have to work a port by myself and it gets boring. XPEL? To get rid of extra water weight? I see it advertised in Oxygen and saw it at GNC today but want to know if 1) it's safe and 2) do you take it for a couple days and that's it or take it continuously for a month or whatever?? And 3) can your body get addicted to it if you take it too long?

Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (822 posts) at 05:20 PM:
Hehe...I figured I might not get any replies here. Tell you what...I'LL try it and let you all know how it goes! :D

I'm curious to know too. I always seem to be carrying water especially by the end of the day.

Body for Life Forum Message by Coco (424 posts) at 08:38 PM:
i've always wondered about that too. i tend to get really bloated feeling at least once a month and feel tempted to try it. i'm worried about the safety of it too.

if you want to read more, there's a bit of info at getxpel.com I'll try it in the next week or so and let you know how it goes. I'd like to see how I really look without all the water and crap (no pun intended) making me look puffy.

I've bought something similar called "shredded"- never used it yet ( still have it and may try it at end of C2. In that case, it is only 3 days of taking it then no more. You still take lots of water daily, but it is supposed to flush it out of everywhere else, muscle tissue, etc. Keep searching til you get the answer you want, and try looking for the info on the net. Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1267 posts) at 04:37 PM: Man! this song gets me going!
Hi guys! I was working on my blog and wanted to share some songs that have motivated me. One song really hit home - the Michael Bolton song "Go The Distance". It seems so relevant to my journey. When I first heard this song a few years ago, I visualized getting my health and my fitness back... and finally being back on my bike. It kind of captures the feeling that symbolically every mile I ride my bike is another mile closer to where I belong... and that someday at the finish line that special woman will be waiting for me... After being on my own since my wife took off with a friend in 1993, I really like that part about having someone to share my life with again! Man! This song brings me to tears sometimes! Over the years I would play this song to help me hang on to my dreams when things got rough and the dreams seemed even further away. But unlike those years, I'm now actually on that journey... and the song is even more inspiring... Give it a listen by pasting the link below from my blog or you can just click on my homepage icon and look under the "Motivating Songs" heading. http://jimsplace.typepad.com/go_the_distance.mp3 BTW -- I'd love to hear about songs that have likewise been kind of a theme song for you... Body for Life Forum Message by annie1104 (151 posts) at 04:44 PM: Yikes - Tracker BMR/Fitness Calculator
I just discovered the BMR/Fitness Calculator on here, so looked at mine. It says I should be eating 1280 calories a day to lose 1.8 pounds a week. 1280??? You've GOT to be kidding!!!!!! (I've been eating 1430-1500) Is this for real?? :(

Body for Life Forum Message by WeCanDoIt (314 posts) at 04:46 PM:
Hey Annie... I ate about 1300 calories a day and had great sucess. It's different for every person. Mary

Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (822 posts) at 04:48 PM:
I find it hard to eat that few calories too even though for me it says to eat even fewer than that. I find I eat more like 1400-1500 and I still make progress. So, if you're losing fat, I'd say don't change a thing.

The BFL site recommends 1480/day, this one says 1350/day. I'm confused too.

Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (148 posts) at 05:37 PM:
I'm not sure how that calculator is set up, but, generally BMR (Basal Metobolic Rate) is the amount of calories that you use if you were to sit around doing nothing but breath all day. Genarlly there is another muliplier that's used to figure out the actual number of calories you burn based on: your job, the number of hours you sleep, housework or gardening etc you know, living. And then there's the calories you burn doing excercises. I'm wondering if one of those factors is missing from the calculator? because I've found that as as 36 year old 5'5" 200 lb woman that WITH a free day I can eat between 1400 and 1600 a day (If I'm doing BFL workouts) AND take a free day and average 1.75 loss per week. I'm I'm not taking a free day - I can eat 1600-1800 lbs a day. According to FitDay - The calories I burn in a day (NOT my BMR) is 2564 and that doesn't include my workouts...

Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (822 posts) at 05:17 PM: Now I'm scared...
Ok, yesterday I was all excited to put my deposit down for the BFL cruise...and now I've let my mind take over and I'm scared to go ahead with it and don't know what to do. For one thing I'm having relationship issues and doubt that I'll be with my guy by that point next year, and I feel weird talking to him about the cruise. Should I put the deposit down and not tell him? Plus, my brother is getting married next summer, plus I had been planning a trip to London next year too and that would be a "career" kind of trip. It's no big deal to put down a hundred bucks but now I'm having all these thoughts and don't know what to do with them. Ugh. Thanks for letting me vent. Guess I better start that savings account I've been meaning to start.

Body for Life Forum Message by wannabeloverly (101 posts) at 05:22 PM:
I think you have until April next year to get your deposit back.

Body for Life Forum Message by scrapapicchic (8 posts) at 05:30 PM:
Don't freak! I have all kinds of fears too but this is something I really want/need to do for myself. Do you feel the same way? If you can afford it put down both deposits. Set a timeframe to really work on your relationship. If relationship must end, you can get refund of one deposit and be setup with a roommate. If brother gets married, job takes you away, you can reprioritize. You can get a refund as late as April. Revisit/improve your goals, open your savings account and relax! From one worry wart to another.

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (990 posts) at 05:47 PM:
My 2 cents - if you've got the money put the $200 down. Really, its like putting $200 in savings until April. If you won't miss it til April what have you got to loose??? Surely by April you'll have a better idea whats going on with you, so why do today what you can put off til tomorrow. Put off making the decision til April. If your honey doesn't go and you still want to, apply the extra $100 towards your ticket. There ya go, bon voyage!!!!! Tracey

Body for Life Forum Message by NaturalPhysiques (258 posts) at 06:28 PM:
Here's a little secret I've learned in life. If you want something, commit to it, and let the universe guide you. I've put down payments on seminars I couldn't afford, invested in coaches without knowing how I'd pay them my fees, and done other things. Not out of being chaotic or random or just lousy with my finances. It is out of passion - out of being brave enough to stop getting in my head and analyzing everything, and instead following my heart and intuition. It's there for a reason. So, when I feel something is right, I set my intention and do what I can, and the solution ALWAYS reveals itself. The future is FICTION. It's not real. This game of "what if" is just a way of creating an excuse to procrastinate and feel bad. It's NOT REAL! Especially if it's over a $100. I don't care if it's $100 or $1000 - a year is a long time and if you really need it, you will find a way to step into that! I think you would REALLY benefit from "The Attractor Factor" by Joe Vitale. This is a VERY POWERFUL read that will help you better deal with situations like this! Best of health and success. Jeremy

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (990 posts) at 05:36 PM: I have News - bad news for me!!! Yikes!!!
I went for a consultation at GoodLife Fitness which is very local for me. I finally got my bodyfat% done for free. I've mentioned in the past, in my neck of the woods it would run me $100 - $150 for a bodyfat test for non members. Well I wish I hadn't. Here's the run down: Current Body Weight: 121.9 lbs Total Body Fat: 21.1% Fat Free Mass: 78.9% Total Body Water: 54% Body Mass Index: 20 Your target weight range is 111.1 to 114.8. They did put me in the "athletic category" well yippee. WTF???????? I thought I started at about 21 - 24%. I was so disappointed!!!! I've done on-line tests before and averaged them all out at 13.7%. Quite frankly I thought it was too low for how I looked and what I could grab but I still liked the number, but still I really did know that was low. BUT 21.1%??????? Has this been all for nothing? Talk to me please.......No B.S. please!!!! What does anyone know about the contraption they used. It was a scale and you grabbed these handles and it sent electric currents through you. So it weighed you and she pushed some buttons and up popped this number that knocked me off the scale flat on my ass!!!! I couldn't believe it (mind you I didn't mind the weight - its 2 lbs. less than mine at home and I had my shoes on, yeah). Have I got a long haul ahead of me. To loose 7 to 10 lbs. is going to be tuff enough! Your comments, if you can. Thanks, Tracey

Body for Life Forum Message by scrapapicchic (8 posts) at 05:42 PM:
There's a lot of variables using that machine. I've heard recent exercise, water intake, time of day among other things can affect readings. Basically they can be worthless. How do you look and feel? That's what matters most.

Body for Life Forum Message by scrapapicchic (8 posts) at 05:45 PM:
I just saw your pics. If everything is the same there is no way you are 21%!

Body for Life Forum Message by wannabeloverly (101 posts) at 05:45 PM:
I agree, there are so many variables, the most accurate fat testing is water displacement but unaffordable for most of us mere mortals. However, IMHO I would trust that one way more than any of those online ones. I did a test of 5 different ones online and they all came out completely different, my BF% was anywhere from 15 to 35!

Body for Life Forum Message by WeCanDoIt (314 posts) at 05:47 PM:
NO WAY ARE YOU 20% BF!!!!!!! I had my BF analyzed at home and at the gym and both places said I was 16%....and you have WAY less fat than me! Thank goodness that was a FREE test! I've heard the lower you are in BF the harder it is for the analyzers to detect your BF%. But you know what...who cares about the numbers. You are beautiful, confident, thin, trim, have muscle development, and well BELOW 20% BF!!! Mary

Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (822 posts) at 05:48 PM:
Gosh, Flower I HAVE to disagree with that BF%. I really think it's wrong. You couldn't possibly be 21% with abs like yours. I just can't see it. I don't know what they used, but I just don't think it's accurate...not even close. I have a feeling some others here will think the same.

Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (1224 posts) at 05:49 PM:
You have too large a muscle mass for bioimpedence to be reliable for you.

Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (148 posts) at 05:51 PM:
Tracey - it sounds like you had your body fat tested via 'bio-impedance’ Not exactly the most accurate way to have it done. Beside the fact that it's not usually accurate, it generally only tests the body fat for 1/2 your body. So in my case (Bottom Heavy) When I use my scale I come up near 50% and when I use a handheld I come up as 35%. Bio-impedance can be affected by a LOT of things. How much food is in your stomach, how hydrated you are, how good is your contact to the little electrical pads, etc. I wouldn't let one such reading derail your goals. And CERTAINLY don't let it minimize your progress!

Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (252 posts) at 06:02 PM:
LISTEN TO MUSCLE MOMMY, FLOWER!!!!!!!! She knows what she's talking about. If you MUST ease your mind, get yourself dunked in a water tank. Bio-impedence is not accurate, all the folks on here are right. Come on, girl, look at your photos! My wish for you is that you can have a measurements revolution. Burn the scale! Banish the BF readers! Down with the numbers-crunching!

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (990 posts) at 06:08 PM:
See this is what I'm looking for. Really I don't want any B.S. (no offence). I really didn't think I was 13.7%, I'm not an expert but I'm sensible and can feel myself and I know I have some to go. On a good day I thought maybe 15 - 17% and that might be pushing it. My abs have become a bit more visable, they may not be in pictures but people I STUDY THEM!!!! So I told her "but, but my abs are pretty visible and I'm sure they shouldn't be unless my body fat was in the teens; she shrugged her shoulders. Then she asked me if I was still menstruating, uh yeah, I wish it would have been a mensturating day I would have plowed her probably. I thought afterwards I should have asked her if that should be a goal as in "how about if I stop menstruating maybe I'll come in at 17 or 18%? Oh shut up Tracey you sound like you're menstruating LOL. Again this is what I wanted to hear - THE INFO ABOUT THIS BIO IMPEDANCE!!!!!! I really don't care (thats a lie) if its close to accurate. It just seems like I'm back to the old drawing board again. The more I think about this, the more pissed off I'm getting at myself. Its silly but I usually know when I'm doing okay and I really thought I was doing okay til this. I'm so frustrated!!!! Thanks for your input guys. I don't know what direction I'm heading in. Tracey

Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (822 posts) at 06:16 PM:
flower, i just looked at your photos again...there's no way in hell you are 21%.

Body for Life Forum Message by NaturalPhysiques (258 posts) at 06:25 PM:
Tracey, I have a question. Are you doing this for you, or someone else? I'm curious to know, because placing so much in the number means it's not about you, or your health, or anything else. The number is something someone else gives you, and the "standards" are something someone else writes, so you are basically giving up your power. It means that I, as a trainer, could come back and say you are 30% and you'd be thrown for a loop. The question is ... why? What does that number matter? Isn't it about something more? Tracey, I've worked with a LOT of people over the years, and a few women who were figure and bodybuilding competitors. I can tell you from all of the body fat tests I've done, there is no way you are 21%. So, let's scrub that notion. You are most definitely in the 16% range. I don't know your age, but remember that body fat gets higher as we age. In other words, you could look exactly the same in 10 years and be 2% higher body fat because as you age, you store more internal fat that doesn't show on the outside! (With males, a 52-year old at 12% looks like an 18-year old at 8%, for example). So, you are definitely lean. You look great. But the real question is ... WHAT IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL? Are you taking everything you're doing and reducing it down to a number ... whether it's what one of those machines do, what a caliper says, or what a scale reads? Or can you go beyond that and look at ... how healthy you are? Your performance? How great you look? Aren't these more important? Let's face it. I know people who you can't see their abs AT ALL who swear they are 12% body fat, and then women who are so shredded you could stick quarters between their ab muscles who think they're 30%. It's NOT an exact science, and it should only be a tool ... it shouldn't be so important! You've done a great job .. .celebrate! Jeremy

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (15 posts) at 06:30 PM:
I agree there is NO WAY you are 21% I would guess you to be at 15% just by looking at you! Hell no you are even close to my BF%! NO WAY jose you are a lot leaner than I ..... for now teeeheee! But no really you look freaking awesome! I agree with everyone else not buying it ... no way! T

Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3479 posts) at 06:35 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by supergirl (822 posts) at 06:50 PM:
Jeremy always has a way of summing it up nicely. Made me think of why I'M doing this too, as it's easy to get caught up in the numbers.

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (990 posts) at 07:04 PM:
Oh s***, I know he's right (Jeremy). Am I doing this for someone else? Yeah but I don't know who. I guess its me and I've set some kind of standard probably set by myself and I don't know any other way to gauge it other than a number. With me, there's ALWAYS room for improvement. You know the type of gal "never happy unless they're unhappy about something". Forty years old and still I haven't outgrown that. Still, gotta do what I gotta do. I'm aiming for the best I can. I really do know when I've done okay and I've done okay. I just didn't think I was that bad but still think I could do better. So a big heartfelt thanks to Jeremy for truly putting it into perspective. The bottom line is unfortunately it is about the number but at the same time I really will know when I've done better than okay. Its a competitive nature - I know what its like to win when you've done your best, I know what its like to win when you've done okay, and I know what its like to not win when you've done better than okay. Make sense? Thanks all, you're the best. Tracey

Body for Life Forum Message by bethkk (45 posts) at 07:05 PM:
Yeah, Jeremy always seems to get us back on track, doesn't he? I've stopped getting on the scale, which is a BIG achievement for this former "scale junkie". I would LOVE to know my "true" BF%, but there doesn't seem to be a reliable tool out there. So I'm going with how my clothes fit and measurements. Tracey, IMHO, bioimpedance is a joke. I had a Tanita BF scale that I returned because the numbers were so out of whack it was crazy. I've heard that calipers are the next best thing to getting dunked, but even then you have to have someone that's good at using them. Bottom line is...YOU LOOK GREAT!!

Body for Life Forum Message by scrapapicchic (8 posts) at 07:23 PM:

Tracey - I agree that you look around 16% or maybe less - no way are at 21%. You look friggin' awesome and I know I have told you before I am striving for your look!!! I love what Jeremy wrote - I will copy it and read it over when I am feeling the way you did after getting the bf%. Great, awesome words of wisdom!!! Because I have also put the same emphasis on the bf number as you have, I also have a point of view on why. What I think we look for when we go get our bf% done is confirmation that we have done as well as we think we have. We want factual data to support the hard work we have done. Most of us have a bf% in our mind that we view as our goal or ideal. It IS disappointing to think you are getting there and then the number comes back higher. Another thing to remember is that just because someone else measures our body fat, they aren't necessarily going to be right!!! I agree that we should be doing this for just ourselves, but let's face it; we are doing this mostly for ourselves, but ultimately we really WANT the admiration of others and that feeds our self esteem and gives us VALIDATION. The bf % reading was supposed to be validation - but, alas, it happened to read higher. That is mentally really tough to recover from, I totally get it. However, you also admit that you can take a step back and really validate the progress you have made for yourself. And the validation of others here can be a key factor for us number watchers that we are headed in the right direction, even if some method of measuring bf% gives us a reading that just doesn't seem right. Try to forget about the test...it was inaccurate, Tracey!!! You look awesome and should be proud!!! Set some new goals that are not measured by body fat percentage!!! Nancy

There are millions of women who'd LOVE to be in your shoes. They'd love to be someone with a body like yours and the ability and commitment to get it that way. I can understand having goals and working towards something. But I also think it's important to give yourself credit for what you've accomplished. You are healthy, you are strong, you've stuck with the program and achieved. Why can't you be happy with yourself? Believe that the # was bs. Be proud! WOW!! Look at all the muscle you are gaining. Who cares what that scale says. Its weighing all that solid musicle you have put on or one of these weeks out of no where your going to have a huge weight loss.

My scale did not move except two pounds from week 0 to week six. If I had not taken my pics, I would probably have quit. But since I took a before picture and a halfway pic, I was able to see that I had lost all my back fat rolls and that my stomach and legs had gotten smaller. I still have a ways to go, but I am no longer relying on my scale to tell me my progress. My reliable digital camera and measurement tape speaks volumes.

I've only lost about 8 pounds in the past 7 weeks, but I'm fitting into clothes that I haven't been able to wear since two years ago. And then I weighed TEN POUNDS LESS than I do now! GET OFF THE SCALES, PEOPLE!! THEY LIE!! Seriously, I'm using clothes and a measuring tape for my progress now. And I've been a "scale junkie" all my life! Great thread, AW!

It definitely gets better. The day after my first LBWO I was completely blown away. How could anyone possibly do HIIT under such circumstances? Was I just a wimp? I haven't had day after pain anywhere near as bad since then. And believe it or not, doing the cardio actually eases up the pain. I think it has to do with flushing out the lactic acid build up. I dunno. But it does help.

Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (1 posts) at 03:26 AM: Need Workout Schedule Suggestions
I am new to this. I am not new to working out just with a support group. If you look at my profile my issue is working out with an injury. I have been unable to run for the past year and a half due to an ankle injury. I have put on 20 pounds since then. Yesterday I started doing pilates, stretching and weights. A couple of months ago I started fast walking which got me down 12 pounds but dr. ordered that to stop. I am looking for suggestions of a more defined schedule to keep up on. Thanks, Lori
