I did great on C1 but I have to admitt I did more cardio then wts, I've just always been into aerobics so that was easy for me, I like wts, just didn't love it like I did the aerobics,
Since C2 was a flopp, not much change at all I started C3 with the idea to do BFL as it was meant to be done
Now on week 4 of C3 I am seeing results again, only this time, I am doing the wts and hiting my 10's with the wts. I think I am beginning to love the wt part more then cardio now, hhehe! amazing
But I find that we all have to tweak a little in our own little personalized way to make it perfect for each of us because we are all different and all of our bodies respond differently
Don't sweat the small stuff, just GET*HER*DONE!!!

Does the same apply to 6 inch stilletos?
Seriously, I'm going to look at my runners now. Great info.
Body for Life Forum Message by Pixy (119 posts) at 07:45 PM
If you need more help picking out the proper shoe just go to a running store when they fit you for your shoes they can look at your old shoes and watch you walk or run.
I had to do this and have fully recoverd from shin splints. I thought I had a high arch problem but because my arch gives some when I walk I needed to be fitted for stability.
Good luck and if you plan to run more then just your 20min, cardio its worth the investment.

When I bought my new shoes for the challenge I went in to the store wearing my old running shoes, they have you run to see if you overpronate (see Stone Oak's post for explanation). The interesting thing I learned was that your shoes are like tires and only really function as intended for a certain amount of miles, after that it's time for a new pair. I was told for someone who trains like BFLers that you would need to replace them in about 6 months. Has anyone heard of that before?

I THINK it is Bill that also states... No amount of sets or reps are best it is high intensity effort that produces best results.... Nothing can replace high intensity effort in my opinion
Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Mommy (1229 posts) at 09:53 AM
High or low, you want to go to muscle failure. It's the last few reps when you feel you can't do any more that make the most difference. Low reps at heavier weights will get you there faster.

I know how you feel... I felt underchallenged, and like I was living way below my potential until I read the Body for Life book. That combined with prayer and my own ultimate decision to change for life is what worked for me. I pray that you can experience this as well.
Body for Life Forum Message by BiginTexas (5 posts) at 09:31 AM
I officially start my challenge on the 25th but I've been changing my lifestyle. I think, at least for me, that so much of what you can accomplish resides in your mind and spirit. Plus there is always the "I'm doing this because I DESERVE to be good to myself". A positive attitude, while not always easy to achieve or sustain, is a key to being successful in many areas of life. Just my 2 cents.

I should hold a camp at my house after a free day for you people. You'd get a good look at why not to weigh yourself. The advice here about that issue is endless and there is no finer example than me. Come to my house and watch a psycho in action.
Never, ever, ever, ever weigh yourself after free day unless you are knowlingly looking for giving yourself a good beating. Its sort of like going in the fridge, you KNOW the milk has gone sour but you give it a good sniff anyway, cringe, ewwww, thats gross, sniff again, get grossed out even more. WTF is the point??????
Never, ever, ever, ever weigh yourself after free day or smell the sour milk.............unless..............you really like the smell of sour milk.

although I started a challenge 7/9, this past week has been as if I hadn't even started. Last Friday my fiance' had to fly 400 miles away for a family emergency. (Everything looks to be ok now). The stress of him being away along with the worry over his family sent me on a downward spiral. Friday I started eating and didn't quit. I calmly justified it by saying that it was my free day and moved on. Saturday I was back on track, but Sunday a trip to a buffet with the kids lead to another binge and the weeks been pretty much a yo-yo between fighting to make healthy choices and giving up and pigging out. Add to this the fact that I don't like going home to an empty house, so I go out with friends, have a drink, then another... Then come home and eat a pint of Ben and Jerry's. All this bad nutrition and lack of sleep of course leaves me too tired to even think about lifting a weight or stepping on the treadmill.
The one 'good thing' I've been trying to do for myself is to stay here, reading every post and gaining strength and inspiration from it all. Every success story I read pushes me even harder to make the choice, face the abiss and make the next choice a GOOD one.
It'll be another week before my honey comes home, but last night I took a huge step in the right direction. I went grochery shopping! $130 for one weeks worth of food for one person! Holy Tow! But my fridge and cupboard are now full of good healthy choices. Now I just need to pack it all up and bring it to work with me. (Because of my schedule I eat 5 meals away from home and only 1 there).
I'm sure that with the quality of nutrition going up that my energy levels will go up and my stress levels will go down.
I'm still struggling - but the will to fight is getting stronger. Taking it one day at a time here - and just letting you know that I appreciate everyone here who overcomes each and every day. You give me hope.

You speak of your husband being away and I can't help but comment. You will get back on track and you will feel a hundred times better, believe me! My husband is a Lt. in the army and is gone a LOT! At first it was pretty hard and I let it affect my ways of living (eating, working out, etc.), but now I'm learning that I will be a better wife and mother when I care for myself.
My husband deploys to Iraq in Sept for 12-14 months and I am not quite prepared for the challenges ahead of me. But after starting BFL and reading through all the amazing life transformations on tracker, I feel much more empowered to make the right decisions.
If you can just get yourself to the gym and have a great workout, you will feel a hundreds times better....about everything! This isn't easy, but I find that nothing worth having ever is. Give yourself the credit you deserve and jump back into the swing of things....you'll thank yourself!
Body for Life Forum Message by melissab (43 posts) at 01:19 PM
Oh, and if all else fails....look at your photos! You're looking amazing!! :)
Body for Life Forum Message by PartTimeMom (152 posts) at 05:51 PM
Melissa - thank you for saying that. I only wish I DID look like that. The back slide I did from those "ending" photos were a hole 'nother story' (getting transfered, adjusting to being away from home from 6:00AM until 7:00PM, stress over weather or not I would have a job from day to day, eventually getting a new position, but having to take a pay cut all the while my fiance' is desperatly looking for a job...) Anyway - I've gained back all that weight (more times then I care to think about actually).
Oh well, no use feeling sorry for myself. Can't change the past, all i can do is change how I live in the future.
And you're right - my fiance being away for one whole week isn't really something to whine about - but one week is the logest we've been apart since the day we met over four years ago. Getting through a day without him being on the other side of it is kind of like trying to do HIIT with only one lung.

I was at work the other day making a baked potato in the microwave when one of my co-workers mentioned to me that microwaving your food causes the most loss of nutrients of all cooking procedures. Not being a person that only takes one persons opinion I decided to do a search on this subject. If you microwave your food you might want to read this http://www.amaluxherbal.com/hidden_hazards_of_microwave_cooking.htm
The only thing it dosen't mention is what kind of effects just reheating your food in a microwave has. I imagine it would be a lot less harmfull. Also anyone know how to bake a potato? I only know how to do it in the micro or on a barbeque.
Body for Life Forum Message by melissab (43 posts) at 04:56 PM
Rinse the potato and poke holes in it with a fork or knife. Next wrap it in aluminum foil. Place in oven preheated to 350 for 60-90 min. I usually bake mine for 90min b/c it's always soft. It sucks to get it out and eat a potato that's still hard. I never microwave it anymore b/c it's just so darn yummy out of the oven!

I don't poke holes & wrap in foil - I absolutely love when the skin gets crunchy. I've had about 1 white potatoe in 7 months. We joined a gym just so we could get a good leg workout.

The Myoplex is a little thick - you can thin it out. I cut it in half (21g of protein 150 caloires) ... that way it isn't SO thick!! Make sure you're adding enough water and if the taste is a little overwhelming, pop it in the fridge. When it's SUPER cold it almost tastes like a milkshake!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by reagan123 (27 posts) at 11:22 AM
thinning out myoplex with very cold water is my key to drinking it... the first few times i had it, the shake didn't go down to well... it was too thick
then i added more cold water and i actually really like it now.

I started using Betagen in June (but quit after vacation when I wasn't working out). The day after I started it, the scale dropped. I have never felt or looked bloated with it in any way.
Look at it this way... if it helps build lean mass (which it does), and lean mass helps you burn fat (which it does), then you're going to lose fat, right?
Look at the profiles of the women who said they used it. None of them got bloaty and fat looking. It will only enhance your already stunning beauty.
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (697 posts) at 11:35 AM
Thanks, Oh Stunning Jess and Oh Studly Young Guns. There is so much hotness responding to my humble thread that I feel faint and may swoon.
I had looked at the profiles of the women who had good results with Betagen, which is why I had decided to try it, but then I remembered all the things I read about how it makes women bloated, and I got askeered.
I made it through 8 awesome weeks of C1, and then let it go all to hell, and haven't seemed to been able to get back on track yet. I bought the Betagen and the ThermoDynamX to see what I think of them, and I'll start using them on Sunday, When I'm going to officially start C2 (although I've kind of started today--just without the supplements or the measurements). I've got to get back on it before I undo all the good I did with C1.
Body for Life Forum Message by WeCanDoIt (327 posts) at 11:51 AM
I LOOOOOVVVVEEEEEEE ThermoDynamX. In fact I don't know what I would do with out it! It's the pill that gets me out of bed in the morning and gives me energy for my morning cardio. It also puts me in a great/giddy mood. I've never once felt jittery while using it. Just make sure to eat a couple bites of food when you take it because it might upset your stomach a bit. And drink lots of water!
I also use BetaGen. I love this stuff too. I've heard people say they feel bloated from it, but I can't say I have. I also haven't noticed that it affects the scale. It really helps with improving my strength during my workouts.
I suggest trying both products...if you don't like them then you can always stop taking them.
GOOD LUCK!!!
Mary

Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (697 posts) at 12:13 PM
WeCanDoIt, do you take both as directed, or do you take less--particularly on the Betagen? I started the ThermoDynamX this morning, just to see how it goes. I only took one before breakfast, and I haven't noticed any jitteriness, so I'll try two before lunch to see if I can tolerate it. I usually don't have adverse effects, but I remember I tried Metabolife ONCE a long time ago, and it made me nearly crawl out of my skin. Apparently, I don't do ephedra well, which is one thing I like about ThermoDynamX. No ephedra.
Body for Life Forum Message by WeCanDoIt (327 posts) at 12:39 PM
Hey Nicabod…
UGH! Yes, I tried Metabolife when it first came out years ago and it made me so jittery! I did not like it at all!!
Right now I take two Thermo pills at 4:15 am with a glass of water and a few bites of food (i.e. a bite of a protein bar, a few grapes, or ¼ a banana). I set my pills next to my alarm so when it goes off the first time I take my pills…go back to “sleep”…hit the alarm a couple more times…then wake up. You get the idea. By the time I get to the gym at 5 it’s kicked in and I have energy and am awake.
Originally I would take another two pills after lunch, around 1:00, but I think it affected my sleep. So now I take my second dose before my mid-morning snack around 9:30 or 10am. It hasn’t affected my sleep anymore.
The Thermo pills make me more hyper than anything…but they also make me a bit jumpy when I hear loud noises all of a sudden, for example.
For BetaGen…I use 1 TBS of the powder with about a 1/4 cup of water after every workout. I work out in the mornings and evenings, so I get two doses a day.
Hope that helps!
Mary

Hi Nicabod! I use betagen-2scoops twice a day for the last 4 weeks or so. My lifting is incredible! I feel so strong!!! Since I am ending my C2 in 2 weeks and taking photos, i am stopping it for now, but can't wait to get back on it after photos. I don't think it makes you bloated like the womanly monthly thing. It is more like all of your muscles feel full and pumped. From what people say, you should quit before photos so you look more "cut". I didn't use it in C1.

What supplements are good for a woman who needs to lose fat (a lot), gain muscle and more energy? Can you take more than one? Should men and women take different supplements?

Hi tisayw!
I've had great success with ThermoDynamX, CLA, and BetaGen!
ThermoDynamX gives me that boost of energy at 4am when it's time to hit the gym. But be sure to take it with a bite of food, otherwise it might upset your stomach.
BetaGen has really helped my strength...and it tastes great! I have the Raspberry flavor.
Be sure to also take a Woman's Multi Vitamin!
GOOD LUCK!!!

My suggestion would be to do your first 12 weeks without supplements (other than protein powder and MRPs) so that you can get a feel for what your body is capable of. Follow BFL to a T and see where it gets you. THEN worry about adding in supplements in C2.
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (697 posts) at 09:37 PM
I did C1 without any supplements but the Myoplex Lite shakes for two meals a day. This challenge (C2), I'm adding ThermoDynamX and Betagen just to see what happens. But I agree with Jess--save the $ and do the first 12 weeks without. You'll get amazing results. The only reason I'm adding supplements C2 is to "shake things up." I'll probably do C3 without.

Due to the fact I cannot get my loverly Kickstart anymore, I went to the supplement store in search of a new product.

It was great! Had that let's kick butt energy feeling back again (it's hard to get that at 6am sometimes) and I had a great workout!
Has anyone else tried this product?

Living in the middle of nowhere, I must admit that this is neither my dog's or my first encounter with a skunk. I've done the tomato juice thing on myself, but this is her 3rd time (2nd in a month) and I just leave here outside (another benefit of living in the middle of nowhere - she can't run away, there's nowhere to go :)
The last encounter this summer was with my in-law's dog (they're both black labs). Luckily, my dog (Benelli) just tried to chase it and got sprayed. The other dog (Browning) was not so smart - she proceeded to bring the skunk up into the yard - IN HER MOUTH!
Talk about an experience leaving a bad taste in your mouth! I wonder if they taste as bad as they smell?

I loved the muffin joke so much I thought we could start a joke thread.
A man was walking down the street when he was approached by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner.
The man took out his wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked, "If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead?"
"No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man replied.
"Will you use it to gamble instead of buying food?" the man asked.
"No, I don't gamble," the homeless man said. "I need everything I can get just to stay alive."
"Will you spend this on greens fees at a golf course instead of food?" the man asked.
"Are you NUTS!" replied the homeless man. "I haven't played golf in 20 years!"
"Will you spend the money on a woman in the red light district instead of food?" the man asked.
"What disease would I get for ten lousy bucks?" exclaimed the homeless man.
"Well," said the man, "I'm not going to give you the money. Instead, I'm going to take you home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife."
The homeless man was astounded.
"Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that? I know I'm dirty, and I probably smell pretty disgusting."
The man replied, "That's okay. I just want her to see what a man looks like who's given up beer, gambling, golf, and sex."

I'm frustrated with how complicated the password requirements have become at my work. We have moved to a "more secure" network and new requirements were just sent out. Give me a break! And they expect me to memorize this beast (of my own creation)? It's like the Declaration of Independence in special characters! These requirements lead me to believe our new network is less secure. Did I mention we have about 4 different "secure" systems with similar requirements?
Anyone else sick of passwords? Where do I get the chip implanted?
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (2105 posts) at 08:37 AM
lol tell me about it - I'm the system admin whre I work, and we have different passwords for each server, our own logins, and then I have to keep track of everyone elses as well!
Add to that different security programs on our public pcs.
Then on top of that - I work a second job, where I have about 8 other login/password combinations to different parts of accounts/support/webpages and knowledge bases that I have to keep track of.
It is INSANE! lol

I hate it when you try to "standardize" on a single password and then you hit these:
1) "Your password must contain at least one numeric character"
2) "Your pasword must contain at least one uppercase and one lowercase character"
3) "That password is already in use, select another" (and mine is quite unique, which means I've already put it in and have actually forgotten my USERNAME!
4) "The time limit of 30 days has been reached for your password, all passwords must be changed every 30 days for security reasons. Please selecte a new password".
5) ALL OF THE ABOVE!!!

I have to change passwords at work every 90 days. And I have three of them and they can't be reused. One requires at least one number and ther other is case-sensitive....sheesh!!!! They do this to protect patient confidentiality, but it's still a pain in the A**. If I forget my password, there will be no charting on patients, ordering labs, supplies, etc. or getting their meds out of the dispenser.
I have a notebook that I keep all 34 of my passwords in (from online banking to bulletin boards to email accounts to our Board of Nursing, etc.) and it's tucked away. Of course, a few months ago, that "tucked away" place was forgotten and we couldn't find the damn notebook ANYWHERE...imagine how freaked I was!!!!
I couldn't pay certain bills, check accounts, transfer money in or out of our IRA, or do anything online. It was traumatic...LOL. We finally found the damn thing...hubbie took it out to use it, then didn't put it back in the same place...ARRGGHH!!
I'm seriously considering getting that Microsoft finger scan thing you hook up to your computer. It's gotten decent reviews and it sure would be nice to only have to remember my 2 work passwords and not a myriad of others.
Melanie = )
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3508 posts) at 12:04 PM
Here at work we have to change our passwords every 30 (I think) days. We can reuse a previous password, but not the immediately previous one. So I have 3 I rotate, and just have to remember which one's next. But I can't just change my password when it's time, because there are TWO networks, and if I do it without telling the IT guy to change it on the second network at the same time, I can't access half the programs on my computer.

My hubby and I went to Italy (Rome and Florence) a few years ago - Beautiful, historical, you can walk everywhere! Also, very romantic!
This past May I went to Taiwan and China with my mother - it was amazing and we got to see so much (traveled with a group)! Unfortunately I wasn't fit enough to make it all the way up the Great Wall, so I'll have to go back post-BFL!
Body for Life Forum Message by deadstick (18 posts) at 09:10 AM
Yellowstone National Park was fun this Spring (and Jackson Hole, Wyoming). It's amazing how you can see boiling pots, geysers and waterfalls twice the height of Niagara Falls all within one park. It's also got lots of paved hiking trails and was a good workout with a 20 pound baby on my back the whole time.
Those of you that enjoy fishing - I did my first Canadian trip (easier for me I suppose since I'm only 45 minutes from Canada - just south of Winnipeg) last weekend and it was a blast. Of course, it was just 3 guys (me, brother and Dad) so that was an escape in itself.
dndoty, my wife and her 3 sisters are supposedly going to Italy next year! Neither of us has ever been to Europe - I'm sure she'll enjoy it.

Without a doubt Disney World has been my favorite. Staying at a Disney resort... taking it all in ... I was just a big over-sized 9 year old when we went last year.
Topsail Island, NC - a very laid back beautiful beach community. Been there 3 of the past 4 years. Definitely more of a family atomosphere, than say a party place like daytona or panama city in Fla.

My top pick for camping would have to be either Yosemite (we live a couple of hours away from there) or Grand Teton National Park. Both parks are absolutely breathtaking and the weather is pretty nice.
The Stone Oak: We are planning a trip to Disneyworld in May. I can't believe how many decisions there are to make!!! From whether to stay on-site, off-site, rent a car, don't rent, eat at the parks, have lunch back in the hotel, etc. I want to make the best of it since it's going to cost us around $6000 for the trip and will probably be our "big family vacation" for the next couple of years.
I haven't been there since the mid-90's so I'm a newbie when it comes to the World. But I grew up infatuated with Mickey Mouse and lived at Disneyland. We took the kids to Disneyland summer before last; I wanted to share the "magic" with them. It was so neat, seeing Disney through their eyes. I feel like a dork, but I shed a few tears when I saw Wishes with them. They were so happy and excited. We spent 5 days there and they still talk it about all the time.
My husband's family will be driving down from South Carolina to spend a few days there with us as well, so it will be even more fun with all the family together. They've been to Disneyworld several times (they live within a day's drive, unlike us to have to fly) and are looking forward to visiting the parks with us.
For my all time favorite vacation, it would have to be backpacking around Europe. For the summer after my high school graduation, I went backpacking around England, Scotland, Germany, France, Spain, and Greece with my best friend who lived in London at the time. It was an amazing trip that I still remember vividly.
One of my favorite spots while there was Pere La Chaise; it's the cemetary in Paris where Jim Morrison, Balzac, Oscar Wilde, and a few other famous people are buried. The cemetary itself is awe-inspiring, especially if you go when the light fog is still hanging over the hillside. It was a beautiful place.
There's also a small town on the France/Germany border called Strasbourg that has a beautiful church. The town itself is really charming and we loved it there. The church was amazing, especially at night when it was all lit up. Next to Notre Dame, it was my favorite church out of the ones we visited.
I am hoping when my stepkids get a bit older, we can take them over there for the summer. I want to see other culturs and how people outside America live. It's so much different than here and I want them to experience what I did (except the getting thrown out of the youth hostel and getting beat up....LOL). My husband would like to visit the places where his family originates from (he's Czech/German) and see some castles.
After Disneyworld, that will probably be our next big trip. We will still take camping trips, as they aren't expensive, but will save up for a big trip overseas when the kids are old enough to really appreciate it.

Melanie - I went there a while back with my folks and we stayed on-site and it was cool because little trolleys took you everywhere and you didn't need a car! If I ever go again, that's what I would do. Then again, I'm not sure how much more that costs either.

I am beach girl! So I love Crystal Clear blue ocean and sugar white beaches. I love Tulum Mexico & Playa Del Carmen. Yeah I know Emily just ripped through there. I was sad. Tulum is the most beautiful place and still not taken over by to many resorts yet. A lot of yoga retreats. I love it that most of the little hotels don't have electricity you use candles and such. And it is the perfect temperature so you never get to hot at night. And you can actually deal with no hot water showers. It can be very romantic. Kinda like being stripped down to the minimalist life style but it the most gorgeous place. Lot's and lot's of healthy food at the little restaurants. I mean you can get some fattening foods too but the healthy stuff is freaking good. But they have great Yucatecan food. Fish and fruits.... MMmmmmm MMmmmm. We stayed in a hotel with electricity this last time but it had no TV or phones It was awesome. Man I miss that place! It literally looked like a Corona commercial. And Quiet! And about 2 hours away you can go into cancun or 45 min you can go to Playa Del Carmen and hit the clubs there. Such nice people there too. I am such a hippie at heart lol! I like the minimalist approach there. You really get to capture the beauty of the place and enjoy it.
Thats why Tulum Mexico is my #1 place to go to!

dndoty...we are leaning towards staying on-site for several reasons, one being the Disney Transportation. I think the kids would enjoy being close to the parks as well. And it would be nice to go back to the hotel in the middle of the day for a snack, rest, dip in the pool, and not have to worry about a car. Plus, if we are on-site, then the others in our party can go and do as they please using the Disney Transporation without having to worry about a ride.
Do you remember where you stayed?

Thanks to my anal tendancies, I documented more details about our trip than i care to reveal .... lol
Anyway, definitely stay at one of the disney resorts. It makes it so much easier to get around. They even have their own shuttle service from the Orlando airport now.
We splurged and stayed at the animal kingdon lodge, which was awesome ! Next year, the Polynesian village, so we can just jump on the monorail to get to the magic kingdom ...

Thanks! I found this great website that has been enormously helpful, but definitely NOT conducive to my getting sleep as I could read it for hours and hours. It's
http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1
There are SO many helpful people on there. We are trying to do this trip without spending a fortune, but at the same time, I really want the kids to remember it. I've always been one of those people who don't believe in staying in an expensive hotel room if you plan to be out most of the day/night. Obviously, with Disney, you are out of the room quite a bit.
But I'm kind of leaning towards upgrading the resort I had picked out (the POP Century) for a moderate level one (such as Caribbean Beach Resort) or even splurging for a Home Away from Home (such as the Beach Club or Boardwalk Villas) and renting DVC points from a member. It's such a HARD decision!
The airfare I've found for an amazing price (or so I think). Under $1000 for the 4 of us, roundtrip, from Reno to Orlando. Tickets are normally around $350. So maybe by saving there, I can spend more in other places.
Disney also has their new Dining Plan. Pay one price upfront and get 1 Table Service Meal, 1 Counter Service Meal, and a snack everyday you are there for each person in your party. We could eat at some of the REALLY nice restaurants there and not have to worry about paying a fortune! Did you eat at Boma's, by any chance? I've heard it was really good...along with Jiko. Just not sure how my kids would react to the different kind of food. They are pretty good about trying new stuff, but I am not sure about African food.

Oh, I've bought the Unofficial Guide To Disneyworld, along with Passporter. And I subscribed to TourGuideMike, which I've found to be awesome. By using him, tons of people said they never waited longer than about 15 minutes in line, even in peak season. I guess he does exclusive tours around the World for a pretty high price and shares his tips and planning on how he does it.
I think I enjoy planning vacations almost as much as I enjoy taking them!! We are also planning on hitting Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon (I can't WAIT to swim with the sharks and learn how to surf...both my stepson and I are going to do the surfing lessons), and DisneyQuest (stepson is a HUGE video game freak). So we will have a lot to do in the 8 days we are there.

OK I have to comment on Kauai. My third trip is this September. It is so beautiful and has diverse climates. Last time we took a hike at the bottom of Waimea Canyon (Grand Canyon of the Pacific) that was amazing. We had to drive off road to get to the start of the trail. Can't wait to go on another hike there.
And of course there is the ocean. Hawaii definately beat all of my expectations.
Don't wait for a honeymoon to go to Hawaii!

Switzerland: Hiking in the Swiss Alps and staying in a little town called "Murren." The innkeeper was baffled when my friend and I go up around 6:30am to go for a morning hike. She said, "what are you doing, this is a sleepy town." When we got back about 9:30 she had kept our breakfast for us. It was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to.
Second: Hiking to the 3rd highest peak in the Pyrennes Mountains in Spain. My brother-in-laws grew up in Spain and we (my two sisters, nephew and a friend) went to Spain about 2 years ago. During part of the trip we travelled to a town called Tervia (I don't even know if it is on the map) but it is way up in the Pyrennes Mountains. The population is about 60 during the summer. Amazing! When we started the climb my brother-in-law told us that there was "going to be crying, and people saying I'm tired, I want to go back." Of course said with a sarcastic teasing spanish accent. LOL. Well, he was right. It was INTENSE but we made it. At the top of the peak he gets of lunch that he had packed and carried in his backpack (he is such a sweetie).

DeanaRae - Oh boy, could I go on about this one. How much money can you spend? My absolute favourite is Jamaica (we stayed at Sandals Negril). I've been to the Mayan Riviera & Play del Carmen (like TNT) and was pleasantly surprised. I compared it to my beloved Jamaica but in a different style. Been to the Dominican a few times - its cheap, nice but doesn't compare to the other 2. My husband is very interested in Costa Rica so have done a fair amount of reading. It supposedly is quite beautiful in a rain forest type of way. Not much for the powder white sand beaches its darker more lava like, but very very much to see; its become quite a "hot spot" lately. Don't know a thing about Belize.
If you can afford Sandals, it truly is wonderful. One other thing, last year we were scheduled to arrive in Punta Cana when hurricane (name escapes me) the weekend we were to arrive. It devastated Punta Cana so we changed dates. In the meantime I did some reading about what happens after a hurricane hits. Just think of the U.S. and the clean up involved; they have equipment, manpower, money, not a third world country and still it is a major job. To give you an idea of what you could be walking into - raw sewage that has been floating around, mold growing in water soaked furniture, the ocean being polluted. It can take many years for this all to dissipate. I used alot of forums at this time getting feedback from people who had travelled around the time of our hurricane - it was a big help.
Sorry to bore you guys. Deana, pm me if you have anything further. You must be disappointed. Is your travel agent helping?????

Ok - let's tackle this BFL style.
Gotta make a plan. Now for the two of us, between airfare, car rental, hotel and spending monday - I'll need about 9 grand.
I have so many bills atm - that even saving for a trip might be next to impossible at this time. And forget about credit ppft I'm maxed out on that currently.
HOWEVER - around November next year, I would have paid my car off and our computers - so I could probably get a personal loan for a trip after that!
Maybe I could plan a trip for December/Janurary 2006/2007 or something. hmm
Hot time of year to go though - Matt might melt.

Hi, everyone! We'll be hitting ol' I-80 eastward in a few hours. I will be attempting to keep up with BFL on the road (yikes!) in the hopes of getting some bragging-right photos and stats at the 4-week mark.
See you in a few!
You can e-mail me: karenna@awtry.com. Don't send me spam or I will have your homes infested with termites. :-)

HAHAHAHAHA Why is corn always the first thing everyone brings up about the midwest?!! I grew up in Iowa and since I've lived in GA & TN, all anyone can ever ask is if I lived in a corn field. I assure you, I didn't. However, there IS a lot of corn in the summer.... :) But Nebraska....whoa. That place can seem....well....corny. After reading this opinion piece I couldnt help but post this link below. The reporter talks about how President Bush is obsessed with working out. At the end of the article the reporter states that most people have demanding jobs and it must be nice to devote a WHOLE hour a day to exercise :-). It is all about choices in life. I enjoyed reading the article thought you all might as well?

I can't find his email address I wanted to tell him he's an idiot, nicely of course. Not for his views on Bush, I couldn't care less about that, but his views on exercise have me a little perplexed and annoyed.
I couldn't even find his name in the list of editorial writers

THis is my favorite part:
"The notion of a connection between physical and mental potency is, of course, silly. (Consider all the perfectly toned airheads in Hollywood — or, perhaps, the president himself.) "
Someone should invite this guy to try getting up off his couch and trying the whole exercise thing. His writing would no doubt get better, as would his attitude!
By the way, here's the info from his bio:
"Jonathan Chait

I couldn't stop laughing at the article when I originally read it. Especially for the editor to explain to everyone how ABSURD it was to spend ONE HOUR working out each day. 3 TRACKER LADIES AND MYSELF!
Ok, I posted this on the lifer's while tracker was down so some of you already know about this. Forgive me, but for those who were not at Lifers during the "downtime" here is some fun and exciting news that happened about 2 or so weeks ago.
Tracy, Linne,Go4Steffie, and myself entered the BuffMother contest. Unknowingly that we all entered we all met up there lol. It was called "My Testimony" contest. Surprisingly we all 4 were in the top 12. Sadly, we did not win, but we are featured below the winner in the "My Testimony" section as the 11 runner ups!
www.BuffMother.com
Boys I will understand if you get stuck in her gallery for awhile before making it to the "My Testimony" section . LOL. ;-)
Congrats to the "Tracker Girls"!!!! Wohoooo you guys ROCK!

Little miss buffmother has entered my mind now and then. Did I not read she got into that "fabulous shape" in 5 months? Would I be being a catty pessimist in saying I'm doubtful and with all those suckling kids at her would she be that perky? She is so beautiful! So beautiful in fact, that I may enjoy looking at her as much if not more so than any male here! LOL
I love everything about her from her legs, to her abs to her, er, you know to her hair - I'm even considering a copycat cut. Ugghhh, I'm in love. LOL

PAGE 73! It's the page that should have been page 1. It says that the recipe sizes for EFL are exactly in between the size needed for a man or a woman. So, they're a bit short for maintenance for a guy, and way too large for a woman. Probably, depending on your goals, for ladies they should be cut to about 60 or 70% of the portion in the book.
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (697 posts) at 09:53 PM
I didn't use the book for C1, and I got so BORED with the same ol' foods! I think that's why I blew it after week 8. I'm getting the book for C2.
Body for Life Forum Message by Go4steffie (340 posts) at 10:05 PM
For C1, Russ40 and I used BFL only and not EFL and had AWESOME results. It was our personal choice and although others would disagree, we felt that we wanted to say away from EFL recipes until after the official challenge. We were very strict and ate very basic meals like Chicken breast, sweet potato, broccoli....Salmon, Brown rice, Spinach.....etc. We have the EFL book, but have used it only a little to this point. One thing we have totally given up is Pasta. I have not had pasta since February.
Like I said, i know others will not agree with me, but for us BFL only was the way to go.

1/2c cottage cheese
1/2 oz lf cheddar, cut into little chunks
2 Tbsp sunflower kernels
mix & eat.
(Add chopped up pickles if you want too)
I even got a coworker hooked on adding the sunflower kernels, lol!

This may sound gross (it looks even worse), but it is really yummy: cottage cheese, applesauce, splenda, and cinnamon. My friend makes a "apple pie cheesecake" (oh, my heck), and it kind of reminds me of that (only not as good, and without the massive coronary).

tuna cakes! Gotta try them! I had my first tuna cake this week (thanks to you guys posting the recipe!) They are SO good. Honestly, they taste like a tuna melt although there's no cheese. Even my BF who's not on BFL loved them.
1 can tuna, drained (I used chunk white albacore)
1/2 cup dry oatmeal (not instant)
3 egg whites or 1/3 c. egg substitute
Also, I added diced sweet onion.
Mix all together and like you would with pancake batter, drop on a nonstick skillet sprayed w/Pam. Let them get nice and browned on each side. Serve w/a nice green salad. Other mentioned it's good w/Honey Mustard to dip in. YUMMY!!

I've used it in tacos, etc. It's not bad...just a little chewy. I could handle it if I had to, though. It seems to take on whatever flavor you cook it with and mine tasted like taco meat. It just didn't have the same texture as real meat.

LOL....you can find bags of it by the vegetarian food in the grocery store. I believe Morningstar makes them. People use them in tacos, spaghetti, etc. for an alternative to real meat (i.e. vegetarians). It's just soy protein that looks and tastes like hamburger meat.

Hello. I was looking for ways to make chicken a little more interesting and found a technique for brining that's supposed to make it taste better and stay juicy.
It calls for: 1 gallon water (for whole chicken), 1/2 cup salt and 1/2 cup brown suger. Soak 3-12 hours, rinse and pat dry. I guess you cook it how ever you wish.
This sounded intriguing to me and I was wondering if anyone here has every tired it?
Thanks,
Eric

I am wondering if I am getting enough protien. I usually eat egg beaters in the morning - 1/2 c which is equal to 2 egg whites. Should I increase it to a whole cup to get 4 egg whites???
Body for Life Forum Message by MegsBFLMomma (76 posts) at 10:59 AM
If I remember right, EFL has a 4-egg white omelet, so as long as you balance it with your carbs, 4 whites should be fine!

Body for Life Forum Message by reagan123 (27 posts) at 11:17 AM

Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (697 posts) at 11:30 AM
I used 1/2 to 3/4 c. I can't imagine trying to choke down a whole cup of it! My protein and carbs usually ended up balanced with the smaller amounts.
Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (636 posts) at 01:38 PM
I use a cup of Eggbeaters (the Southwestern flavor...YUM!). I eat that with 1/4 cup of low fat cheddar cheese and some salsa on a low carb whole wheat tortilla. Extremely filling but it gets my day going.

I usually buy blenders at garage sales. You can get them for $3, and they are the older variety that are much better made than the cheap crap out these days. Osterizer is one of my favorites, and many of them have the heavy glass cups instead of the cheap plastic.
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (697 posts) at 09:57 PM
I guess if I'd been paying $3 for my blenders, it wouldn't tick me off so much when they fell apart.

I just bought the Cuisinart smart power duet blender/food processor. I really like it. It has an enormous (6 cups) glass container with a really wide hole at the top. It is a great machine.
But we also use my parent's hand-me-down 35-year old Osterizer Imperial blender (puke green, of course). Only 3 of the 10 functions work, but it sure can blend and it makes a mean Myoplex pudding! I agree with michiganmike--if you can find one for 3 bucks at a garage sale, go for it!

florida twin momma ... I love the bike trainer. I bought it this winter to beat the video blues! That and I was training for a 160km ride that I did in June. I love it. Check out your local bike shop. We bought a Minoura trainer ... you can check them out at www.minoura.jp
I really like it, especially during the winter. I've never owned a stationary bike so I can't compare. There are multiple settings (and don't forget the actual gears on the bike) that come with the trainer so you definitely have many levels of resistance. Check 'em out. Just make sure you've got a smooth tire or you'll wake up everyone in the whole neighborhood when you do those early morning workouts!
Speaking of home gym resources ... just went out and bought the Men's Health Home Gym Guide ... over 400 exercises you can perform at home. No gym membership required!! I'm addicted!

Funny thing is that I chose the machine that aggravated it - the leg sled - because it seemed safer than the leg press.
BTW -- I can ride my bike mile after mile and it doesn't bother it. Maybe I should just use the bike for my leg exercises? Maybe so!

I found this routine where target reps go like this:
Reps: 20, 15, 12, 10
or 20, 20, 15, 15
or 20, 16, 15, 14 depending on which exercise it is.
You guys seem so knowledgeable I was wondering what you thought about it.
The only reason I'm looking at different routines is when the gym is busy I find it really hard to get to an alternate exercise for the final 12.

Hey ya'll! I'm cruising the local want ads looking at all the great used fitness equipment that is up for grabs. It looks like I can get a pretty decent treadmill or eliptical trainer for my home gym for a pretty decent price. I'm stoked and stumped. Which would you all purchase?
I run outside and when I had a gym membership I ran on a treadmill. I've kind of thought the elipticals were funny. Are they "better" just because the lessen the impact on your joints? Your opinions would be much appreciated!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3508 posts) at 08:36 PM
They're only better if you like them better and will definitely use them. Personally, I would choose an elliptical because of the impact issue, and because the difference in quality in home treadmills and gym treadmills is amazing. I could never run on my treadmill at home, and I've done it frequently on the treadmills at the gym. Of course, that same thing may be applied to the ellipticals, I don't know. But I'd rather have an elliptical than a treadmill at home myself.
It's all up to your personal preference, though. Why not call up both and go look at both, try them out and see which one you like better?
Body for Life Forum Message by Moggie (28 posts) at 08:41 PM
I would definitely try out the treadmill before you buy it. There can be a huge difference in quality. My sister bought a half-decent one and soon found that even with it set at the hardest levels that it couldn't keep up with her.

Think of all the people that would love to be in your shoes. I often think about those that are in a wheelchair or are too sick to exercise. They would give anything to go outside and walk/run or hit the gym to pump some iron. If your perfectly healthy (I hope you are) then why not use/improve your body??? Go and "hit a ten." Good Luck!! I write everything I need to do for the day down in my planner (including my workout)...the day isn't over until I see all those things ticked off. I also think about you guys on here. I know that I am not alone doing this and that you all are out there sweating along with me. Another thing that makes me do it is knowing how much I am going to kick myself in the rear later if I don't.

You are DEFINATELY shrinking!!! For some reason I see a bigger difference in C2 - perhaps what you are wearing? I think I may have seen these on bodyforlifers and said the same thing. To me the biggest change has been lately and I think you are doing fabulous!!!!!!! Huge difference in your waiste area as everyone else said. Your hard work is definately paying off.
Keep up your excellent work, you are destined for success!!!!!

Kind of the opposite of Muscle Mommy's idea: how about a "Comeback Kid" award for those who started great, but blew the finish, and came back for a great C2 (or C3 or whatever)?

This has been a dream of mine for quite a long time but I'm sure it won't materialize as I will probably not act on it.
I've never agreed with the "big wedding" thing for various reasons. But I've always wanted to be a wedding coordinator for the simple fact of making someone else's wedding different. I find weddings pretty much all the same, only difference is colour of bridesmaid's dresses and flowers.
What I picture is purchasing a big old century home. You walk in and all the rooms are painted pale shades of pastels - one room is white where you have wedding dresses, the next room is bridesmaid's dresses, the next cakes (I'm also self taught doing such cakes), the next flowers, the next invitations and on it goes. I think I have very good taste (at least thats what I think LOL) so your wedding would be different in an understated most beautiful way. Why such a frivolous dream? Because I would be a total natural at this and it would require no effort at all - I would succeed and have fun doing it.
Prissy, frivolous and girly of me I know!!!!!! LOL

I'd like to move out west, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and become a cattle rancher. A place with 1000 acres or so, and live my life as a working cowboy. Setting my own hours, not a slave to the rich corporate bastards ...
Of course I'd have to have one awesome home gym as well... :)

My first dream is to finish the novel I'm writing (it's 3/4 done right now) by the end of the year.
My second dream is to have the courage to send it out.
My third dream is that it's accepted and published!
And my ultimate dream is that writing fiction can be my job. That I can earn enough from it, that it becomes what I do for a living.
But I have to say trying for a dream is pretty scary. If you never try, you never have to face failure. I'm determined to go through with it, though. I know I will always regret it, if I never give it a shot.
Body for Life Forum Message by johnnyrelish (11 posts) at 09:26 AM
I think your dreams relate directly to what is put in front of you. Once I dreamed of playing soccer for The Rangers but a busted knee put paid to that. I then married young which was a mistake (starter marriage! LOL!) but I had a fab son and when my wife bailed I gained custody of him and have looked after him since he was 14 months old.
I live in this old house which seems to be in a permanent mess (2 boys living together hmmm?) but someday I hope to have it real nice. My dream now is that my son grows up good and happy and stays away from the bad stuff in life. One thing I'd say to Supegirl is if current man ain't the one then don't hang about. I did that for ten years with my ex allways having that doubt and eventually she turned round and dumped me. Another of life's lessons learned!
As for me I'm enjoying the struggle to get fit, I enjoy my job (I sell cars-meet lots of nice people!) and I enjoy my son. Recently met someone and maybe just maybe I could get be getting it right. And I have to say I thoroughly enjoy the chat on this web site. So many of you make me laugh and despite the fact that all you ever hear is bad stuff about the net I think it's fab that we have all come together on this site with a common goal and we show each other such support. In the light of what's happening particularly in London right now it shows that when people come together without prejiduce we are all just human beings with the same basic humanity.
Right enough.

Tracey. I am new to this tracker & am challenge One week one. I couldn't believe your post about your disappointment after looking at your photos. I am 40/140lbs,5'5" don't know my "numbers", so we have similar stats... YOU look great...go back & look at your pics & you'll see it..
One thing I've learned (the hard way) in these 40 years is that when I become completely absorbed with myself, I get a bit obsessed and panicky. That's when it is time for me to channel this energy to someone else! Have you shared your experience with someone? You could very easily train someone else to transform as you have...
don't know it that helps but it helps me...Mary Louise
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (1011 posts) at 04:13 PM
Jim ya just had to go and read this didn't you? Yeah, yeah, yeah. But lo & behold you were wrong in one area - drawers and closets can be messy, just depends on "what I'm hiding that day". I'll hide things just to give the impression that I'm anal LOL, I'm not really. Remember the bleach thing? I bleached my finger nails today.
Thank you all for kind supportive words. Of course I would come here to unload. I'm still unsure how I feel about the whole thing. I do know it will make me persevere.
Flash - I may sound unhappy but its not the case. Its the only way I know how to push myself. And I do know, everyone hates a whiner. Trust me, I get on my own nerves worse than all of you having to listen to me.
Validation is what I'm looking. The numbers give me a checkpoint, the numbers give me something to aim for, something that validates my efforts. Doesn't mean I have to know what exactly, people are different and this as ICU_RN said this is my confirmation. But really, you people validate me. I am so very grateful! Thank you all for your support - I knew I could count on you all to put everything into perspective.............AGAIN.

I'm glad you posted this because I was going to ask this question earlier. I'm at the end of W2 and I was worried I'd shrink in that area! I haven't noticed anything yet, but yesterday I did my UBWO and when I got to chest flys I was curious if I shouldn't do as much weight...now with all of your success I won't worry about it!
Body for Life Forum Message by Thisisit! AKA BubbleButt (213 posts) at 07:40 AM
I am psyched about how this is working out because previously when I've lost weight those poor girls got FLAT and saggy! This time, they are smaller (I've lost a couple inches or 1.5 something like that) but they are still nice and firm-ish -- hey I've had two kids, what do you want... but no more saggy than before, maybe a bit better -- def. less saggy than losing weight the other way, and not at all deflated!
Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (636 posts) at 01:35 PM
With my last challenge, I noticed a HUGE change when I started doing incline flyes. It really developed the muscle on the upper portion of my chest and made my cleavage look a WHOLE lot better. I can still make my "pecs dance around"...teehee!!
Working your chest, especially your upper chest, will have an impact on how your breasts look...maybe not the breasts themselves, but it will lift the muscle behind the breast tissue, making the appear "perkier".
And for those who are relatively flat chested, I'll pass along a tip from my aunt. She's an A cup (but she's also got bodyfat of around 13-14%) and found that doing cable cross-overs helped develop the inner portion of her upper pectorals. This created a nice line down the center of her chest, giving her the illusion of cleavage. She doesn't look so flat chested since building up these muscles.

Not only am I starting C3 today, but amongst all my stress from changes at work (two coworkers were fired Wednesday and my shift and entire daily schedule changed yesterday), and money stress and not sleeping, I've decided I'm going to quit smoking too. Cold turkey. I was standing outside this morning smoking my last cigarette in the pack and thinking I needed to buy more cigarettes on the way to work and then thinking that's something I don't need to be spending money on when I'm in such financial trouble, and then thinking oh yeah, they're freakin' bad for me and probably affecting my ability to progress in cardio, and I just decided I'm not buying any more.
Man, I'm gonna need a lot of support. I'm so glad I have you all here to help me. I know some of you have quit recently and know what I'm about to go through. I've done it before, in fact, a few times, LOL.
So does quitting cold turkey count as protein?

hey Jess, I've been too busy to spend much time on tracker lately although I stop in every morning for a quick check on everyone. I just wanted to say as a former smoker GOOD for you! It's tough but not impossible to quit. I think it is very much the same as comitting to BFL you have to make up your mind to cross the abyiss and just do it! You WILL get grumpy some days at first, but hey that passes my wife says I'm only an @sshole 6 1/2 days a week now! Good luck and remember that cold turkey is better when you eat it, it's really bad when you get cold turkey in your lungs!

Good job!!!! Cold turkey is the best way!!! I quit 10 yrs ago. Being pregnant was my nicoret!!! LOL
I suggest to you that eat and chew on a lot of pen lids. I know it sounds weird but it helps with figitting and gives you something to do. On your lunch break walk around the building or play basketball. chew on carrots. The first 2 weeks is the worse. quit coffee for a while cause boy do they ever go well together. The first month you will be hacking up a storm but after that you start to feel so much better. Also, when your driving in a car take bubble wrap, sounds funny but gives you something to do in traffic and to keep your mind off smoking!!!
I still have problems from smoking and my parents smoking through my child hood. If I go dancing at a club for the next week I am hacking away cause of the 2nd hand smoke.
You are going to look, smell and feel fresh!!! You will wonder why you even smoked. Although I hate it so much I will always crave it. I was craving one yesterday. I guess it is like BFL or a recovering alcoholic. It will always be a habit but you just have to stay strong!!!!
And don't ever start again!!

Good for you!! I quit on April 1st of this year and it wasn't a joke! It really did suck, but it was so worth it. I tried the gum for a day or two, but, thankfully, I had a physical scheduled and told my doctor that the gum was making me panicy everytime I chewed it. She said I was having some sort of strange reaction to it and thought th patch would be better for me. So I tried that and WOW did that help!! It was still hard after the moth of patches ran out. I went through a week or two of not being able to sleep at night (the last smoke of the day was always my favorite!). But it got better. I even smoked a cigarette while on vacation last month just to see what would happen and it was pretty gross. But I was quite relieved that it didn't kick the habit back into full gear. I guess that was a sign that not only the physical addiction has been cured, but the mental one as well. I suppose now if I actually wanted to go and smoke one night I could and not start back up, but I don't think I would want to.
I HAVE noticed that I feel a lot better. (My husband said he didn't notice a big difference when he quit, so I guess everyone is different.) I have never been able to run without wanting to die, but it is getting much better now. This is the first time in my adult life that I can say I am a non-smoker. I have smoked since I was 16 and I am 27 now. To me that is the most amazing thing!
I am a VERY habit-oriented person, so if I can quit, I know you can quit! I think being on BFL actually helps with quitting because of all the structire we have due to our lifestyles and for me anyways, structure helped with quitting. Plus I didn't gain a ton of weight like a lot of people do when they quit. No, lucky me, I gained all my weight back when I went on vacation and ate like crap and didn't exercise for a week!!
Anyway, good luck and take care. You can do this!!

Thanks, you guys. The funny thing is, I never smoked in my house because I didn't want it to stink, lol. So drinking coffee won't give me any problems. Hurray, Jess!!! Keep up the good work. It's kind of funny, but I just read something about breaking habits all at once rather than a little at a time. It went something like this:
If you try to break a habit a little at a time, you're fooling yourself. Drop the H, and you still have A BIT. You haven't really stopped anything. So you try to wean yourself further, drop the A, and you are still BIT--your habit still has its teeth sunk into you. So you try to cut down a little more, but IT still has a hold of you. You keep trying, but that T, the temptation, is still there nagging at you. It is better to kill the HABIT all at once, so there is nothing left.

Sweetie..you can do it...go find yourself a beautiful picture of a nice healthy lung...and then one of a life long smoker I am sure you can find some pictures somewhere... put them where you can see them look at them before you walk the dog.....do the same as you do with BFL imagine your "inner transformation of your lungs" just like you do your outer body transformation... I think the cancer society or american lung association or somewhere on line there is a day by day and even hour by hour for the first day description of what good changes are happening when you give up smoking it is really hard to pick up a cigarette when you realize how amazing your body is and how fast it is able to heal itself. I don't know where to find it but just think when you are looking for this info you are busy and not smoking!!!..I quit a long time ago and just knowing that within an hour of not smoking amazing changes have already occured and knowing if you just pick up one ciggarette you go back to square one you won't do it! You are amazing your transfomation is incredible I know you will do this . Also try doing everything that you can out of sequence on your daily routine alot of the smoking addiction is personal to you like smoking when you walk the dog and not smoking in your house...your system is set up for this schedule so mix it up when you can!! Just like workout routines trick your body and mind into NOT craving the nicotine by changing the scehdule! TAKE CARE ...I said care not CAKE!! Young Guns are you crazy saying cake to a woman giving up smoking!!!LOL

Oh Jess, I feel for you. There is no better dedicated smoker than I. I think I'm going to lay low and perhaps pm you in the near future. You people who make great strides towards your fitness goals greatly impress me; but all who have quit smoking those are who I aspire to be (but obviously not today.
Body for Life Forum Message by wannabeloverly (122 posts) at 06:17 PM
Jess, they say there are the "3's" to get through when quitting smoking and I found these to be pretty close (having quit a hundred times). Watch for these hard to get through times and each time you pass one you know you are getting closer to making it permanent.
3 days - at 3 days the nicotine is leaving your system and really wanting it back
3 weeks - at 3 weeks you are struggling with the "habit" part of it, wanting to automatically smoke after a meal or with a coffee
3 months - once you pass this hurdle you are well on your way...the nicotine is out of your system and the auto response should be gone...you will still have cravings...until years later possibly but if you start after this long we'll have to open up a can of whoop a$$!
After that it should get easier and easier.

I love all the tips, thank you all so much. Today was mostly not a problem, except that I just got back from a staff dinner where I had a couple of beers (yes, on my first day of C3, but I won't have another free day until next Friday, and I ate clean and exercised today) and have a bit of a buzz going and very very very much want a cigarette right now. But the only way for me to get one would be to a) drive to the bank (bad idea with the beers and buzz going on), b) go through the ATM to get cash, and then c) going the other direction to the gas station. And I'm far too lazy for that, so I guess for once laziness is going to work in my favor!

I did it cold turkey on a dare, to see if I could actually do aerobics without having a coughing spell,
in one week I saw the difference, in one month I was a happy camper,
Jess, take it one day at a time, when you wake up, say, Today I choose NOT to smoke
List the reasons why you don't want to smoke anymore
brush your teeth more often to notice that fresh taste
PM me if you need help, I have a million ways to help you, I used to teach a Stop Smoking for Life program at my church, I'll be happy to help you GET*HER*DONE!

I was going to recommend laying off the beer for a while--I'm a former "social smoker," and the only time I EVER want a cigarette is when I have beer. Although, that doesn't happen much anymore, either. If you made it through beer without a cigarette, you'll make it. Besides, I drove past Sonic without stopping for a shake or tater tots (or both), so you aren't allowed to have a cigarette.
Body for Life Forum Message by kt30 (19 posts) at 09:46 PM
Jess-I am still the "social smoker", i.e. whenever I have a beer in hand I want one, so I am all with Nicabod. I plan to quit all together here in the next two weeks. It is a nasty habit that I need to get rid off. You are great and I am sure you will succeed!

Will your room have a refrigerator in it? When I traveled during my first challenge, I ate a lot of easy things I didn't have to cook. Tuna sandwiches on whole wheat, yogurt and cottage cheese, ready to drink shakes, carrot sticks. Even if you don't have a fridge in your room, the hotel will probably let you keep things in their refrigerator.
You can do it! You just have to plan ahead.
Good luck!

Actually for breakfast I think you can do the buffets. They do have some healthy cereal selections and skim milk, they have oatmeal and fresh fruit, scrambled eggs(with yolks, though) but there are a couple options. For dinner find a restaurant that has lean steaks or baked chickn and fresh steamed veggies or baked potato. Even if it is not on the menu, you can request it and they can accomodate you. Find out which cuts of meat are the leanest before hand and take the list with you so you don't forget. bring apples and string cheese, RTD shakes and some bars. There are also those little fat free tuna salad packs with wheat crackers(walmrt)they're high in sodium but might be nice for a change. they even have flavored tuna.
I went to Vegas a couple weeks before I started BFL and I remember thinking at most places-well, I could have mabye stuck to it while I was here. Vegas is so fun! I'm jealous you get to go. Have fun!!!

Hi everyone. I need some help. I haven't lost any weight since week 5. I'm ending week 7 here and am getting really discouraged. I am eating clean 5 times a day and pushing through the workouts. I am doing 3 days HIIT with an additional 10 min of walking. Also last week I did 2- 3mile runs. I do enjoy my free day by eating whatever I want. My husband says I'm doing too much cardio....could this keep me from losing? Doesn't make sense to me. Any advice?

Body for Life Forum Message by Moggie (28 posts) at 09:19 AM
Are you measuring your progress solely by the scale? The scale is our foe!! As you do this program you will be gaining muscle and losing fat. For some people the scale changes very little yet their body totally transforms. I have found that using pictures, measurements and how your clothing fits is a better way for me to see how I am doing. Sometimes changing up your lifting and cardio routines can get things moving again. You mention that you are eating 5 times a day. On BFL it should be 6 times. Are you getting enough food?
Just a few thoughts...
Suzanne
Body for Life Forum Message by annie1104 (154 posts) at 09:20 AM
I know it's hard, but you need to forget about scale weight. Some people lose very little scale weight, yet their measurements and body fat keep going down, down, down. Are you taking measurements? You may be lucky enough to be replacing fat with muscle and if so, you will not see much of a drop in scale weight. It will happen though - just be patient. Many didn't see that until week 8-9. Personally, I think your cardio looks normal and don't see where it would be hindering your progress.
Patience, my child :)
Edit: Suzanne - great minds think alike!

I must admit, I'm a scale watcher too. These guys are right about trying your best not to go off the scale.
But, if it's any consolation, I had the exact same thing at weeks 4-6 and have lost 4 pounds in Week 7.

"Screw the scale." If you are looknig to lose weight then the formula is simple . . . burn more calories than you consume. I would scale back the free day and maybe have a "free meal" if you feel you are at a plateau in weight/fat loss. Good luck to ya and keep hitting 10's. Remember everyone's body is different so just reach your ultimate potential.

I am living in it right now. But I have been living in it for 12 weeks. My muscle gain is still incredibly good it's my fat loss that is s-l-o-w. I am adding more cardio to my routine and making sure I only consume 1500 calories perday. I was taking in 1700-1800. Also, I don't eat any carbs in my late meals. I do eat veggies with a lean protein source. I do add in a carb such as brown rice after an intense cardio session to replenish the glycogen storage so I am able to perform a weight routine the next day. I will let you know how this goes. I wish you the best of luck.
It's ok to get frustrated and mad and even go into temporary insanity for a little bit. I did! But don't give up!!!! Keep going! DON"T GIVE UP!!! You can do it! If I can fight through it so can you! And don't ever let it be an excuse to cheat either. Just keep working hard. Maybe change up your HIIT routine. You can still do it just change up the intervals. You can do the full 20 min of 2 min at level 5 then 2 min at level 9 then for the final 2 min do a level 9 then final min level 10. And then when you get good at it try to for the final 2 min at level 10. That knocked me out of my plateau in my 1st challenge around week 7. Hope that helps.

Thanks Teresa! I will try the HIIT routine you suggested. How often do you do cardio each week? I am wondering if I too need to count calories because this fist and palm method may be giving me too many. Do you notice a difference from cutting the calories yet?

Just hang in there I see you are in the women over 40 club if you look at many of our profiles for those of us that fit that category it takes a little longer sorry I know you don't want to hear that!! Guess we spent more time putting it on so it takes longer to take it off... Also I did scale back the a bit on the intensity on my 10's in the cardio and it seemed to help...someone told me that if you are older you don't have to work as hard at the cardio to get in the fat burning stage, don't get me wrong I really sweat and get a good cardio workout and do the interval thing but I have quit trying to get in the 2 miles in 20 minutes, and it may be just a fluke but at the time I scaled back in cardio I did start loosing fat so you can try it and see if it works.. the hubster may be right on the cardio...and you said he had great results on this program right? Also measure measure measure don't pay attention to evil scales LOL I am the worst scale watcher I am addicted to the thing...

I had a question for those people who have suffered from depression; was it an easy recovery process for you, that once it was over, it was gone. I had been depressed since last year; I did make some leeway into getting some relief, but there are just days when I go right back to it. Any suggestions or advice?
Body for Life Forum Message by mlch (7 posts) at 09:49 AM
I have mild depression and panic attacks. I have a family history scattered with mental quirks, nothing too serious. The BEST thing to do & more research is coming out to this effect is EXERCISE! and weight training. Both release those "feel good" endorphins which really improve the mental status!
You are doing the right thing with BFL. I needed to step up my routine of exercise & found BFL. I am more than happy to discuss more detail in a personal mail...ML
Body for Life Forum Message by NCmomof3 (23 posts) at 09:52 AM
Wow, does that take me back and straight to today.
I have suffered with depression. My daughter who is now almost 4 years old almost died when she was 2 months old after she suffered a brain bleed and stroke and needed 2 brain surgeries to save her life. When she was released from the hospital they didn't know if she would walk or talk. Thankfully she is perfect now but at that time I was a wreck.
A year after her stroke, my husband left me for another woman. He was my best friend and I was devastated... I feel into a spiral and couldn't leave my house for over 3 months. I would have a panic attack going to check the mail. Somehow I pulled through and sold our home, found another job and moved out of the town that held so many memories. During that time, I could not eat and lost weight so when I came out of my slump and was ready to face the world again I felt comfortable with my body.
Well, I have since had 2 kidney stones and had my gallbladder removed last month. I'm not sure if it's the medication I was on because I was active and always on a "diet" - but I have gained about 20 pounds. And today of all days, I'm down again. I feel like no matter what I try to do I get knocked down again.
Hopefully August will be better. I will be released from doctors orders not to lift more than 10 pounds. The only thing that stands in the way of throwing a curve ball in my plans is that I'm closing on a house in 3 weeks. I'm trying to keep my head and believe it will go smoothly.
Hang in there! We are here for you!
Susan

Yes, yes, depression for many years. I'm not sure that it ever goes completely away..it's always worse in the winter for me - usually Nov. to about March, but eating healthy and exercising will make all difference in the world. I can't stress enough how beneficial these two factors are so even on the days that you don't even feel like getting out of bed you MUST get up and at the very least go for a walk or something.

OK everyone suffers depression some time in their life the only difference is some people suffer cronic to severe depression and sounds like you fit in this category since it has lasted over a year and this type requires medical help. I hope you are receiving medical help we are here for you but not a substiute for good medical help/advice.. There are so many reasons out there from mental to physical causes but you betcha it can be beat and sorry no one can answer the question will it return of course yes you will have periods of "normal" depression and may have the return of the cronic type... get the best medical help you can and you are on the right track with the BFL program ! I did suffer depression about 25 years ago that required medical treatment and also again a few years back brought on by cronic pain...it is something that can be treated, I am fine for now and just suffer the more "normal" type..Good Luck to you we are here for ya keep following the plan it should help!

I think it is important to establish a good baseline first, if you can. Eat a clean diet, don't drink or do drugs, exercise and drink your water. (hey, this sounds like BFL). After that, see how you feel, and if medically necesssary get some attention, therapy, or medication. If you start out with that, you just don't know what causes it and you may end up overmedicating. I also know there are some over the counter supplements that can help.

I went through a three year wallow, and it's the exercise that has made the most difference for me. I still get the down swoops occasionally, and it's usually either PMS or poor diet and exercise related. St. John's Wort helps me on those days when I want to stay in bed all morning because making a decision what to have for breakfast seems too overwhelming.
Body for Life Forum Message by doingitright! (19 posts) at 11:52 AM
thank you guys for your support! I know many of you on BFL has suffered with this and was looking for some advice. It is just that things look so unsurmountable like it won't work out. People say to have faith, but sometimes, it is like there is no end in sight..you know. I keep hanging on though. Just one of those days. But I do have hope in what jshelton says, things can change in a year! If anyone ever has one of those days, just PM me! thank you!

Doingit...if U get a chance read my profile. I have gone thru some SERIOUS issues w/depression and even spent a whole week in a Pysch ward over it and some other stuff. When I restarted BFL in June of 2004 I was taking around 38 (yes 38!) Pills a day (pysch/anti depressants/pain/anti-anxiety) but within 1 week I weaned myself off of them and havent taken ONE since! Living the BFL way has made all the difference in the world. Even when I dont stick to it like I should (usually the eating-cuz I almost never miss a workout)I feel so much better.
I still deal with the depression-actually a week ago I was almost down-for-the-count...but it happens less and less, and its usually hormonal now.
Good luck and if you (or anyone else here) ever needs someone to talk to-PM me! Im here for ya..

By practicing the law of reciprocation, I've been able to watch so many people grow from confused "newbies", into confident veterans that have not only transformed their lives and bodies, but are now supporting, encouraging and doling out expert advice, thus keeping the cycle going.
It's an incredibly satisfying feeling.

Yay, Nicabod! I'm glad you're back too!
J-Dub- It makes perfect sense to me. That's how it's been for me lately too. Good for you for chuggin' along no matter what!
Mary- You should be proud! That's so great! I went to Macaroni Grill one evening during C1 when it wasn't free day. They actually have a lot of clean options, don't you think? (And I love how this thread has turned out too!)
supergirl- I think it's great that you haven't given up! I never thought I could drink so much water either.
DDRTeddy- LOL on the chest muscle dance! Now that's something to be proud of! ;o)
Jamber- Yes, you should run on that treadmill whenever you can! I noticed my reflection in a parked car once while I was running. It's cool to see those muscles in motion, don't you think?
chris p- I'm so glad you are proud of yourself now! You should be!
success- That's awesome! I'm impressed just with the kickboxing--it looks tough! Congratulations on seeing those muscles!
Tai-Kee- Great things to be proud of! I forget to appreciate things like my house, health, and just life in general. Thanks for reminding me.
TNT- That is so impressive! It's so easy to ease up when you're frustrated. Sounds like you are working harder than ever!
Dana- 7% body fat down? That's fantastic! And how great to not need the meds anymore. :o)
Jim- You've been here since Oct. 2003? You should be proud!! I'm really impressed! And thank you so much for all you contribute!

I'm proud of the fact that I completed C1 without missing even one workout and getting 95% of them done before the sun came up! C2 I missed 2 or 3 workouts only, no biggee. I'm proud that my hubby who is not quite 30 (compared to my middle- aged 40) still says I'm sexy no matter what I look like. I'm proud that I probably look better now than before I had my 2 girls.

I finally want to see my abs at end of challenge.I have worked out for a long time...but no abs..ever. Not this time. wish me luck as I blow out the candles...thanks

I gotta tell ya gang that I do feel proud of what I've accomplished in BFL but my overwhelming feeling is one of gratitude.
I'm grateful that I got a chance to get my fitness and my health back. There are so many people who through no fault of their own aren't able to follow a program like BFL. Maybe it's just me, but I just can't feel much pride without feeling a lot of gratitude...
I also feel very proud of everyone on Tracker. Whether you're getting the results you want or not, you are still one of the few people in this world who has the character and the courage to rebuild your body.

Fitat45- You're so right! How's today going?
Flower- Yay! I'm so glad you're listing what you're proud of! You look better than most not-quite-30-year-olds. Your hubby's one lucky guy!
Mr- Happy Birthday! Good luck on finding those abs!
Jim- Okay, I'm glad you're greatful. But it's okay to be proud too! Most people in your situation would not have responded the way that you have! Be proud of yourself! It's very impressive!

well I am proud of myself that I have taken care of myself and gave myself "ME" time, Although I did get fat durning the last 9 yrs of my life, and even though I did do alot of crying over how I got fat and how could I let myself go like that because that really wasn't me, that's not the kind of person I am, I have always been a fit and will always be fit type of person. I can understand and accept the fact that, when I let myself go, I let go of "ME" because I felt I had a greater life with my Dream come true of having children and grandchildren and I felt that I didn't come 1st anymore, that my chrildren and grandchildren came 1st. I was right and I am proud that I did stop and put ME on hold and enjoyed all I had to offer to my new family. Now as I look back I see that I didn't HAVE to put me on hold, I could enjoy my life and my fitness life so now I guess I can say that I am proud and very happy that my life has worked out the way it did and I am now making room to put everyone in my life 1st including myself thanks to BFL for giving me the tools to use to bring my whole world together.
I am lucky and I am very truely blessed and I thank God every single morning and Nite.

Oh, mercy, am I embarrassed. For those of you that don't know me, I had an AWESOME eight weeks on C1. Then I just blew it. I didn't even post pics at the end of my first 12 weeks, because they wouldn't have been any better (and probably a little worse) than my week 7 pics. Then I got mad at myself for ruining the end of my challenge, so I took about another month off, pretty much sitting on the couch and binge eating. Well, enough is enough. It is time to get back. I'm tired of procrastinating, and actually tired of eating doughnuts (well, almost). I'm starting back to the BFL lifestyle today, and I'll start measurements and pics for the start of a kick-ass C2 on Sunday.
It's good to be back!!

About 30 days ago I got extremely sick. I went to several specialists and they all concured that I came down with a combination of 2 illnesses.
1. lackowillpoweritis.
2. sweetsandbeercraving pnemonia.
Let me tell you it was a close call, but the doctor prescribed one swift kick in the arse and a couple glances in the mirror each day.
Now I am totally cured, but I have to be on guard for any signs of a relapse.
with that said I will be starting a new challenge on Monday July 25th. I have been eating clean and working out the last couple days but I want to officially start on a monday.
Back in Action,
Rod

Oh, my goodness, Rod. That is so contagious. I, myself, had a 30-day bout with the diseases. In addition, I had butttocouch magnetitis. I hope you didn't suffer from this as well, as it is common and often undiagnosed. I'm officially starting my C2 on Sunday, because I like using Sunday as a start day, but I am eating clean and working out today and tomorrow.

Hopefully we are once again on the path to improved health.
Keep your eyes peeled for the notorious "Sand Leech" Disease. Particularily virulent strain usually strikes the "northern latitudes" 3 or 5 weeks out of the year when it is not freezing, flooding, snowing or otherwise inclement miserable weather!
Sufferers tend to appear reddish, brown, with lightened hair, and maintain an inexhaustable supply of beach sand which is continually being shedded into the sufferers immediate environment!
:) Yours in Health,
Kerry

This is really an emergency - where can I get a vaccination????????? Like tonight?????????
We are cottaging this weekend til about Tuesday at least. BBQ, beer, wine, snacks, treats, fun & sun. What are the PREVENTATIVE MEASURES I can take? Like tonight before we go?????? Once we're there I believe all these gross diseases are going to be running rampant. I'm a very delicate individual and quite susceptible to all listed plagues.
I will need a quick antidote upon my return.

Alright, well I didn't eat anybody's liver, and I didn't eat fava beans, but I sure would like a nice chianti. :)
Ok, I'm just so frustrated, and afraid. I'm on C1D20 and I have been following the program to a tee. I havent missed one workout, and I've been eating exactly as prescribed and keeping it withing 1200-1300 calories a day. I didn't even use my free day last week, because I didn't feel like it! I do feel great, and I feel firmer, but I'm not noticing any change. My clothes don't feel any looser, and the scale is about to get thrown out in the trash because it hasn't budged 1 pound.
Is this normal, or am I destined to be chubby my whole life?
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3508 posts) at 01:44 PM
Nope, it's normal. 20 days isn't enough time. Some people don't see changes until week 6 or some even later than that. Just keep at it. You feel better and firmer, and those ARE results, they count, you know!
Er... you might want to stay away from the chianti, though. Liver is fine, however. :D
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (697 posts) at 01:44 PM
I noticed no scale weight change and very little size change in the first four weeks, and I was perfect! Then, all of a sudden, BAM! It was just gone. Stick to it.

Oh thank you! That's good to hear. You're right, I am making progress, and I do feel so much better. I'm actually seeing that not only am I doing good for myself, but I'm becoming an inspiration for my fiance, who used to be an avid cyclist, but lost his motivation when he started working longer hours. He's said that he's very proud of me, and he wants to be like me now! :)
Body for Life Forum Message by MegsBFLMomma (76 posts) at 02:18 PM
aaaw, that is so great that you inspired your fiance too! :)
Everyone's changes kick in at different times. I had big changes the first few weeks, but then hit a 4 week plateau weeks 6-9. It was frustrating, but then I started losing again.
Hang in there, and keep up the hard work!! :)
micky
Body for Life Forum Message by scrapapicchic (10 posts) at 02:21 PM
I've been told that the first few weeks you undergo a "composition change." You are losing fat and gaining denser muscle. The scale may not budge and your clothes may even be a bit tighter but then as Nicabod said "BAM!" The fat starts dropping and reveals all your hard work. If you haven't take measurements and pictures. I've found them to be a lot more gratifying than the scale!
Body for Life Forum Message by dndoty (67 posts) at 02:22 PM
By the way, krush - don't be too upset when your fiance starts BFL if he drops pounds real fast. As all of us women know, it seems that men have that advantage. We love them anyway!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3508 posts) at 04:39 PM
OK, so today when I did my HIIT I was brutally reminded that it has been exactly a month since I last worked out, that I have not been getting a full night's rest, and that yes, I have been a smoker. I reached the puking point at 16 minutes. I didn't actually puke. But I wanted to for 30 minutes after I got off the treadmill! I'm still wheezing (which strangely didn't happen when I worked out before and had smoked on the way to the gym (yeah, yeah, I know)). My legs are shakey, my feet hurt, and even now that I've showered, I can't stop sweating. Now THAT'S a workout!
The funny thing is, when I started I had all this extra energy, or thought I did. I started the treadmill at 3.2mph for my 2-minute warmup, but it didn't feel like enough, so I bumped it up to 3.5, and even that didn't feel like much, and it was my 7 last time I worked out! So my level 6 was 4mph (I am wondering if the treadmill guage thingy was off, so I will try a different one next time), and I jogged my levels 7,8 and 9! Last time I worked out I only jogged my 8 and 9, and full out ran my 10. I didn't actually get to my 10 this time... or maybe I did since I'd reached the puking point. ??
Anyway, I know I've been pretty gabby today, so thanks for your patience. :) I can see this is much like starting C1 from scratch, even tho I'm on C3. I may try it again at the same levels next time on a different treadmill, and keep doing it until I can get through 20 minutes... then I'm gonna bump it up again! :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Young Guns (1213 posts) at 04:51 PM
Gabby is okay. Gives us lots to read :)~
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (697 posts) at 04:52 PM
Well, Jess, hon, if you started so much harder, that may be why you "burned out." I think your plan of keeping with it until you can actually make the 20 min. is great. I'd say that if you did all you could do (and then some, sounds like) that you hit your 10--even if it came a little early.
I kind of dread my HIIT after taking so much time off, but at least I know that "it" comes back quickly. It will only nearly kill you the first time or two, and then you're back in the swing of things.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3508 posts) at 08:12 PM
I meant to say that I realized that because I started harder I may have burned myself out sooner but I was too tired to remember everything I meant to say, lol. So yes, it nearly killed me today, and it might again Monday, but it won't totally kill me and hopefully soon I'll be knocking out that whole 20 minutes.
Body for Life Forum Message by wannabeloverly (122 posts) at 05:23 PM
I find it difficult to get all my sets in or switch for my last 12 because of how busy it gets at the gym and sometimes I do cardio/weights on the same day or I have to split my weights routine because I don't have time to finish it. Anyway...do most of you follow BLF to a tee or do you just try to make it work as best you can using it as a guideline. I feel like I'm failing because I'm not following it closely enough.
Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1271 posts) at 05:29 PM
I've followed BFL pretty closely but I've had to make a few changes as well.
I've had a hard time getting in all the meals - usually only 5 a day for me. I think it is important to alternate days for cardio and weights to make sure you get enough recovery.
I say follow BFL the best you can and don't stress out about any variations you have to make. Give yourself a few kudos just for doing the program!
Jim
Body for Life Forum Message by Go4steffie (340 posts) at 06:26 PM
Because we work out at home, Russ40 and I followed BFL "exactly" during C1....pretty lucky that we didn't have to wait on someone to be finished with the a weight machine, although I had to wait on him to finish with the 45's so I could do my set of bicep curls....he takes forever!!!! JUST KIDDING!!!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by raygeo (143 posts) at 08:18 PM
I follow the program to a T. However as soon as I finish my final lift I look at my watch and make sure I keep my rest at 45 seconds. I've made some huge strides in Challenge 2 and I attribute it to sticking closer to the plan. Challenge 3 will be a little different. I'll be starting the how to add 50lbs to your bench press work out by Shawn Phillips.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (3508 posts) at 08:33 PM
To a tee for me, when I'm able to workout. Of course, I only did 16 minutes of HIIT today..... I agree, don't sweat it if you have to do variations, no guilt if you're actually working out!
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (697 posts) at 09:47 PM
I was pretty much to a T for C1--the only difference for me was that occasionally, if I missed a cardio workout, I did it the next day (meaning that occasionally, I'd do HIIT in the morning and weights the same afternoon).
Body for Life Forum Message by Young Guns (1213 posts) at 10:10 PM
for my first 19 weeks I followed it exactly. Now however my workout and diet hardly resemble BFL at all any more but that's because I'm currently trying to gain weight. For my last 4 weeks of this 12 week challenge however I'll be following BFL to a t once again.
Body for Life Forum Message by Jeanie101 (509 posts) at 10:36 PM
I followed BFL exactly during Challenge 1, actually I obsessed about it. I felt guilty over every little slip up.
During Challenge 2 I lost my structure all together. I just sort of coasted into it and fell apart around week 8 ... the horrible 41st birthday depression episode! :(
This time I am being very careful with my eating and strength training. I'm taking Thermo DynamX and Creatine, and I've added a more focused 30 minute ab routine on cardio days.
My main problem is cardio ... I hate cardio anyway ... but I am limited in what I can do. I work out at home, and the equipment doesn't work well with the 6,7,8,9,10 intervals. (I haven't figured out how to possibly do that on a rowing machine!) So I have switched to "Squigg's 5,5,10,5,5,10 etc." version. I find it easier because I figure if I can breathe it's a five, and if I feel like I'm going to pass out it's a 10!!
So far so good!!
Jeanie :D

Hi gang!
Just got back from the local Trek bike store. They had a contest to see who could pump out the most watts on their indoor bike. There were 10-15 people competing and to my surprise I came in first! And at 50 yrs old I was the oldest competitor!
Lance produces a 30-second peak power of 760 watts and I hit 713. Talk about 'powerful BFL legs' !!!
Frankly, I was very surprised because I had just finished doing my lower body workout and my legs didn't feel fresh. That's a nice little victory to start my weekend off!

Officially, i am not cleared by the doctor to work out. I am allowed to do the recumbent bike, the elliptical, and treadmill and step aerobics if I don't use a step, dont do any twisting, bending, jumping or hopping.. uhhhh whats the use? lol
I went today to the gym for the first time since my surgery. Before surgery, i could ride the bike for atleast an hour before having to stop. Today...i accomplished 6 mintues, then had to stop for 5 minutes, then got 6 minutes accomplished again. Then I was too freaking tired to get off the bike! oh man...all the progress i made is gone.
I'm back to square one. and I still have 2 weeks before I can do any weightlifting or heavy duty cardio.
I'm getting through this weekend eating the best that i can and am offically starting Monday morning eating completely clean and drinking all my water. oops, looks like i'm going to go back into coffee withdrawl for a little bit.
Buddy? you out there?? you gotta help me stay on track and focused!!!

Hi Lori,
Do you have the BFL Training Method? If you don't have the book, you can go to www.bodyforlife.com and download the sheets that explain what to do and when.
Good luck!

Hi everyone!
I have been reading this site for a few days but just signed up and this is my first post. I really love all of the advice here!
I just read the BFL book and have the success journal and am all ready to start on Monday, July 25. The only problem - I have a big work-related restaurant event next week, something we only do on occasion, and I know I will want to have one big fruity drink (which I am pretty sure is not allowed on BFL - right?).
So, I was wondering - am I better off waiting until the following week to start so that I am not "cheating" right off the bat? Or should I just get started, and accept that on that one day my food intake may not be perfect? I should explain that one of my problems with sticking to exercise/healthy eating programs in the past has been lack of consistency/self-discipline - hence my reluctance to set myself up for an immediate failure.
Any thoughts are welcome. Thank you!

WELCOME!!!
First let me say this, BFL is not a diet! This is a commitment for life, not just 12 weeks. START ASAP! Don't let one fruity drink set you back. Accept that there will be days where you cheat. Like Bill says in the book, "You cheat...move on!" Just don't cheat all the time.
Set short term and long term goals for yourself, and stick to them. Also, be sure to take photos! I regret I didn't at first.
GOOD LUCK AND WELCOME!!

Use that day as your free day.

The great thing about BFL is the free day. Use your free day on the work event, and you didn't even cheat! See, you're off to a great start already! Don't find an excuse to put off starting. There will always be some reason to start "next week."

Wow, thanks Mary! That was a great post. I think you are totally right and I am glad you said what you did - you are right, it is a lifestyle change, not a short-term diet - as that really helps me put it into perspective.
I think what I will do is that since I KNOW I am going to have the drink, I will put it in my food plan, that way at least I will not be breaking my plan when I have it. And I will go easy on the rest of the meal (it will be hard though, fabulous new Mexican restaurant - *sigh*).
Btw, I read your profile and - wow -it is amazing what you have done! Congratulations! :)

Hi wannabeloverly and nicabod - great idea!
Just one question - does your free day for eating have to be the same day as your free day for working out? I didn't see that addressed in the book . . . thanks again everyone for the quick responses! :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (697 posts) at 12:16 PM
Mine were not usually the same day, but sometimes they were. Just whatever happened to work out. Also, my free day was not always the same day of the week. Sometimes it was Saturday, sometimes it was Thursday--just whenever. I tried to look at my week and see what events I had, and I'd schedule my free day around that. If I didn't have any big plans, I tried to put my free day off until Saturday in case anything came up. Also, if I "cheated" early in the week, then that became my free day, and I stuck to it the rest of the week.

You can move your free day around if you need to. It is usually best to keep your free day on the same day every week, but if you have an event that you know will put 'dirty' food in front of you, go ahead and move your free day that week so you can enjoy the event without guilt, and move it back to your normal day the following week.
And welcome aboard!

Thanks Nicabod and wdrew! I like the idea of usually having the free day be the same day but moving it around for special occasions to avoid guilt.
ALso, thanks to everyone for the warm welcome! :)

dottingmyeyes...
Are you going to a new Mexican restaurant...or a New Mexican restaurant (as in food from the state of New Mexico)??
I went to college in New Mexico, and gawd I miss the food. Although, green chilie cheese fries aided to my plumpness!

Mary, the restaurant I am going to next week is Mexican. But it's funny you should ask this b/c I was just in New Mexico! I LOVED the food there - the green chili sauce they put on everything is sooo tasty, and I have never had such good margaritas.
Body for Life Forum Message by WeCanDoIt (327 posts) at 01:30 PM
Ooooohhh....if you ever go to New Mexico again, you have to go to a restaurant called Gardunos in Albuquerque. They have the BEST coconut margaritas! They put honey and toasted coconut along the rim of the glass. It's heaven in a glass!

Oh YUM! I will keep that in mind. We flew into Albuquerque but didn't spend any time there - next time, I guess. Taos and Santa Fe were gorgeous though! :)
